At Eternity
At Eternity’s Gate has been part of my life for 4 years now What started as a passion project quickly grew into a story I could not stop telling. Literally. Countless rewrites, new additions, various iterations that have been performed from Liverpool, to as far south as Brighton. All this leading us to this run. The largest, most complete telling of this story to date. One of the key takeaways I have had working on this show is that art cannot be created in a vacuum Nor can it be shared in one That is where you, the audience, play your part. I want to thank you for being part of this journey, and for helping to create the space for this story to be told.

Alex is an award-winning Liverpool-based writer, director, filmmaker, and Artistic Director of Old Fruit Jar Productions.

On the 27th of July 1890, Vincent van Gogh went out for a walk. Later that day Vincent stumbled into a bar on the outskirts of town. As he collapsed he asked to be taken to the hospital nearby. He had shot himself in the chest. A telegram was sent to Theo who rushed over from Paris the following day. He burst into Vincent’s hospital room, the painter's chest was heavily bandaged, he had lost a lot of blood. Towards the evening of the 28th, Vincent began to deteriorate with a fever. The wound had become infected as no attempt was made to remove the bullet. In the early hours of the 29th of July, Vincent van Gogh slipped into a coma and shortly after passed away. This play is an exploration of how Theo, Vincent's younger brother and dearest friend, spent the following 24 hours. This production has been generously supported by TheJacobBillington Trust. Founded in 2022 in memory of Jacob Billington, the trust’s aim is to raise funds for the benefit of young people; specifically to assist funding for young people's music education.
