ABOVE // Three generations of Alex Cooper Auctioneers leadership. From left to right: Brian Cooper, Paul Cooper, Joseph Cooper, Larry Cooper, Matthew Cooper.
Legacy of Alex Cooper For more than a century, Alex Cooper Auctioneers has stood at the forefront of the auction industry rooted in family tradition, guided by integrity, and driven by innovation. Founded in 1924 by Alex Cooper, an immigrant entrepreneur with a vision to bring transparency and trust to the auction world, the company began as a small Baltimore storefront specializing in furniture, antiques, and real estate. Alex’s values of honesty, fairness, and personal service quickly earned him a loyal following and set the foundation for a business that would span generations. Following Alex’s passing, his son Joseph “Joe” Cooper took the helm in the early 1950s, expanding the firm’s real estate division and cementing its reputation for professionalism and expertise. Under Joe’s leadership, Alex Cooper Auctioneers grew to handle major property and estate sales throughout Maryland and the MidAtlantic region. In the decades that followed, the third generation, brothers Paul, Larry, and Brian Cooper, continued to evolve the company, moving its headquarters to Towson in 1982 and developing specialty departments in fine art, jewelry, decorative arts,
luxury handbags, and collectibles. Their forwardthinking approach positioned Alex Cooper as a full service auction house serving both local and international clients. As the company moves into its second century, the fourth generation of the Cooper family is stepping into leadership. Siblings Matthew and Carley Cooper represent the next chapter of the firm’s enduring legacy. Matthew Cooper, son of Larry Cooper, assumed the role of CEO in 2026, bringing a fresh perspective shaped by years of experience across multiple divisions, from real estate to digital auction strategy. He has been instrumental in expanding Alex Cooper’s online presence and modernizing operations to meet the needs of today’s global marketplace. Carley Cooper joined the family business as a real estate agent serving clients throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. With years of experience in the field, she provides exceptional service rooted in the Cooper family’s long standing values of integrity, professionalism, and personal attention. Together, they reflect a new generation committed to honoring tradition while driving the company forward.
