Club Journal January 2025

The magazine for all CIU members

Welcome to the first edition of the digital Club Journal Club Journal, the official publication of the CIU, has embraced the digital era by transitioning to a fully online format for the first time in its 131-year history. This transformation represents a significant step forward in making the magazine more accessible to its readership while surpassing the limitations of its printed predecessor. By moving online, the magazine can now reach a broader audience, ensuring that clubs and their members can engage with its content anytime and anywhere. Whether accessed via a smartphone, tablet, or computer, the magazine’s new format eliminates the logistical challenges of distributing physical copies, making it easier than ever for members to stay informed about the CIU’s activities and services as well as news from around Union clubs. Moreover, the digital format allows for a more expansive magazine. Unlike the constraints of print, which limit the number of pages due to production, the online edition can include additional articles and more in-depth features. Club Journal’s digital evolution also complements the CIU’s existing digital platforms, sitting alongside the CIU’s official website, ciu.org.uk, and clubjournal.co.uk. These websites serve as comprehensive hubs for information about the CIU, its history, and its services, while the digital magazine adds depth with its feature articles, interviews, and club spotlights. In addition to the websites, information is available on the CIU’s Facebook page and club members can

Olympic skaters help Scissett Club to raise record charity total Scissett Club members have excelled themselves this year, raising £14,000 to support three local charities in the West Yorkshire area – Kirkwood Hospice, Forget-Me-Not Children’s Hospice and Wakefield Hospice. There was a real determination on the part of club members to beat the previous year’s total of £7,000, so the fundraising team pulled out all the stops to come up with ideas and events which would raise maximum revenue, supported by regular raffles and tombola stalls. Four brave souls, including the local MP and a Parish Councillor, took on the challenge of abseiling down from the tower of Wakefield Cathedral, raising over £3,000 between them. Local comedy legend Billy Pearce packed the club to capacity for a show which had guests literally crying with laughter throughout, and raised more than £2,000. A Ladies Fashion Show, always a popular event, sold out within days and added to the ongoing total, also sowing the seeds of an idea for a subsequent Ladies Lunch. Olympic figure skating champion Christopher Dean, who won the gold medal at the 1984 Winter Olympics, and his partner, fellow Olympic ice skater Karen Barber, attended the fashion event as special guests. The afternoon was a huge success, and Christopher and Karen also attended the final presentation event when the resulting cheques were handed to the three hospices. Longstanding club member Tommy Keady undertook a daring wing-walk
