Albert Lai MD: Exploring Surgical Solutions for Chronic Back Pain

Albert Lai MD explained that chronic back pain can be an exhausting condition, often hindering daily activities and diminishing overall quality of life. While many individuals seek relief through conservative treatments such as physical therapy, medication, and lifestyle adjustments, some may find that these options are insufficient. For these patients, surgical intervention may offer a viable path to relief. Understanding the various surgical options available, along with their potential risks, is essential for anyone considering this route. One of the most prevalent surgical procedures for chronic back pain is spinal fusion. This operation involves the fusion of two or more vertebrae to provide stability and alleviate pain caused by conditions like degenerative disc disease or spondylolisthesis. Spinal fusion can significantly reduce pain and improve function for many patients, but it is not without risks. Potential complications include infection, excessive bleeding, and the risk of developing adjacent segment disease, where the vertebrae surrounding the fusion site deteriorate. Another surgical approach is a laminectomy, which entails removing a portion of the vertebra to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots. This procedure is commonly performed for patients with spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal that can lead to pain and mobility issues. While a laminectomy can provide considerable relief, it does carry risks such as nerve damage, blood clots, and complications related to anesthesia.
