ALBERTA COLLEGE OF ART GRANTED AUTONOMY

FRONTIERS Recently the Alberta Crafts Council called for entry to an exhibition of Alberta crafts to be submitted to the Canadian Crafts Council (CCC) and the Dept . of External Affairs . The Al berta jury

consisted of Les Manning — Banff School of Fine Arts; Bob Iveson — Alberta Artist; and Paula Gus taf son President ACC.

There

seven

individuals from Edmonton, 8 from Calgary , one each from Valleyview, Cochrane, and Winterburn. Five worked in metals , 5 fibre , 1 —glass, media .

FIRST for CANADIAN NATIVE ARTIST Lance Belanger of Tobi que Reserve in New Brunswick is the first Canadian Native Artist to be accepted to Leighton Colony

at the Banff School of Fine Arts . Lance will be an artist in residence for three

months

this

summer .

Lance has studied in Washington, Hartford CT, Quebec and Regina. He has participated in exhibitions in Ottawa , Regina , Moncton , and in 1983 in "Indian Social Realities A Visual Interpretation" at the Gallery of the North American Indian in New York.

Society

and the Vik Gallery have jointly sponsored a competition for new and emerging native artists . The winner for 1984 is JANE ASH POITRAS, a 33 year old Alberta Cree artist. The winning work of art , an intaglio and relief print entitled "Ceremonial Sweetgrass't, was awared top marks by a five—member jury compri sed of Alex Janvier, Phyllis Matousek (Edm. Journal) , Jeanette Kapack (BANAC) , Warren Clark (graphic artist) , Dr. Knut Vik

(Vik Gallery).
