For me, there’s nothing wrong about division - division is necessary especially where the labour force is concerned. This really helps to fast track the delivery of services and any goals that need to be obtained. Besides, it is the main or valid reason of election: The 50% plus one vote makes a government that will officially cater to the services or implement the programs and laws for the benefit of all (dictum de omni). Carol Moseley Braun said: “In politics, there are no permanent friends or permanent enemies; just permanent interests.” Sadly, politicians are quite consistent in the observance of this political maxim. The result is not just a petty quarrel of conflict but war. Post-election time is a time of collection. This is the time to take all the money spent on the campaign back into the candidate’s pocket. Well, for those candidates who did not win, or for the nuisance candidates, this is the right time for them to enjoy the money donated to them. This is an opportune time to take all their cronies in the payroll or place them in offices where capabilities are not congruent with the nature of positions they would be holding. Nepotism would be rampant. Favouritism would be breaking the “first come, first served policy,” the “kami-kami lang” or “extreme-family centeredness”would also play a great paradigm to form a political dynasty and shift the gears toward graft and corruption. And many more. Ano nga ba naman daw kung unahin muna nila ang kapakanan ng kanilang mga kaibigan, kaalyado, at higit sa lahat ay kapamilya? (What’s wrong with setting their friends’, allies’, and

T

here seems to be a need to change the face of the global political system and the art of governance. I have a proposal to simplify the methods of choosing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and further planning. My flowery thoughts have now come to fruition. Yet, I am very much aware too that there is no propinquity between and among our tastebuds. Well, it is true that not everybody likes everybody. This is the main reason why I have to proceed with the exposition of my ideas regardless of whoever is going to put a barricade ahead of me. But prior to that, I am going to weave the fabric of my thoughts into small pieces. It is better to introduce it utilizing an inductive argument or the micro-sociological approach. For instance, the etymological definition of words (verbatim) would somehow help us all understand where I am going and what I would really like to point out along the way. (Consult Mr. Google and look for the meanings of contingency and consistency). Pre-Election time is a time for selection. Enhanced political parlance gives a politician a chance to hope for a winning stance. This is the time to think about a distinct and subtly deceptive Political Philosophy, Program, Platform, and Propaganda. Society must depend upon deception. One must see to it that he is way better than the other candidates and surrounded by influential people in order to be selected and bag the election. A Political aspirant’s contingency plan is to entice people to their eye-catching billboards. In this sense, they are more focused on appearances rather than substance - concentrating on the campaign and what to personally gain rather than on

most especially their families’ welfare as their priorities?) Apparently, excessive democracy and abused freedom are the main factors contributing to the unstoppable occurrences of the problems. Dealing with these problems: A means to an end. We need common ground where we can plant our ideas and ideals. Regardless of the roads to take in our journey, we need a commonality of goals towards one and the same direction.

Structuring apolitical groups or institutions Have you heard of a “political potluck committee?” Isn’t it better to have an independent body or apolitical institution where all the social concerns, issues, and problems will be brought to the table for discussions? This is most similar to a “potluck” where we usually cook and bring our favourite food to a banquet so that everyone can have a taste of and enjoy the dishes that everyone has brought to the table. similar tastebuds. We may or may not like to eat all the food on the table. But, ethics says: “if you don’t like it, never embarrass the one who cooked and prepared that food.” Respect plays a vital role when properly

observing this methodology. This proposal removes the power from the political aspirants to design and propose their own programs as there must be an independent body or apolitical institution to profoundly

study and prepare the government programs to be implemented by the politicians. This is to avoid conflicts and confusion on the voters’ side. What would the political aspirants do during election time? Since they are not entitled to organize or join in any party; then, it will be called Partyless rather than Partylist or Partisan. All they have to do is file a candidacy and run independently. During a scheduled campaign period, let the people know that you are well-deserving of their votes in order to look after their welfare after the elections are over. Suggested Procedure on Restructuring the Political System: 1. A convention shall be set by the independent body and will be attended by a significant number of political aspirants; 2. Every attendee will be provided with the agenda wherein social issues and corresponding programs are logically presented; 3. A healthy discussion will be facilitated by the independent body’s chairman in order to observe democracy and obtain consensus or conformity; 4. Once all the social concerns are addressed, everyone in that chamber must sign on the papers in agreement to the designed government program being decided during the session as this is the program they are going to implement. As mentioned, this program will try to discourage political parties from reigning or to have power over the constituents. They will be there to serve and promote consistency, and to deliver the kind of solutions to the recognized social problems. Always remember that the party in power is and would have the tendency to rule over and above the law, which is absurd because “nobody is above the law.” “Salus populi suprema est lex - The welfare of the people is the supreme law.” Let’s all think about this proposal and try to contribute our own thoughts to improve it. With your constructive criticism and loyal opposition, we will all be in a better position. This is merely a spark of my simple philosophical thoughts and can be reflected on by the next generation.

he basketball community was in mourning upon learning of the early demise of Dodo De Guzman. Dodo was a regular in the Philippine Sports Association (PSA) basketball tournaments, suiting up mostly for the Crosstown Auto Centre team. “Tingnan mo Mo, kung gaano ka galing dumepensa,” coach Chester Tiongson was telling me the first time I saw Dodo play. And that explains why Dodo was a regular for the Crosstown Auto Centre team along with the young players. In 2014, I started covering the PSA tournaments and I regularly saw Dodo who just naturally started a conversation with anyone, especially if he saw his BFF, Rolan Latorre of Himig Pinoy/Tahanan ng OPM, who now has joined Filipino Journal’s marketing department. A few years back, around 2018 I guess, he was kind enough to drive us safely to and from Edson, when Crosstown Auto joined the tournament organized by Rodel Gravides, and the best part were his stories about basketball, golf, singing gigs, his beloved mom and his love story with loving wife Cora. In last year’s Corpus Christi Golf Tournament, Dodo told me about his medical condition and I just tried to cheer him up, but I never thought he would leave us this year. 54 is too young for an amiable sportsman to leave. Father Jhack Diaz, who is also a fellow AFJ columnist, said that life is short. I agree. My dad, who regularly played tennis, left us at 54 too, losing his battle to the Big C. So, we’ll follow Father Jhack’s advice because he added that life is like ice cream, and we must enjoy it before it melts. And if I may add Father Jhack, this is something I

normally hear from my businessman friends, “You can't bring your pile of money or wealth to your grave.” Dodo for sure enjoyed life, golf, basketball, singing (especially when he performed on stage with equally impressive performer Nico de Jesus) and we were fortunate to have him among us in the sports community. I will miss his presence when I see the Crosstown Auto team in action again. On behalf of AFJ, our deepest sympathies to Cora, their beautiful children Corina and Adrian and the entire family of Amando “Dodo” De Guzman (January 19, 1967 – August 31, 2021). *** PSA president Gary Perpetua said the basketball league is set to resume in October and all participants are required to have proof of vaccination. No vax, no play. While he respects those who don’t want to be vaccinated, in the PSA community, the organizing team committee has decided that all participants must be fully vaccinated, just to be on the safe side. Gary is speaking from experience. Covid-19 is real! And he does not want any PSA players, referees, scorers including the media covering their tournament to become infected. *** The resumption of basketball, volleyball leagues and other sports activities is a welcome development. But there is always a call by organizers to just be careful because the Covid-19 pandemic is not yet over. The absence of sports activities in 2020 has hit a lot of business owners particularly the makers of sports uniforms. Jekasa Sportswear, a familyowned company that has served the sports gear needs of players and organizers for the past two decades, has little by little been able to breathe, so to speak, because the orders have been coming in. I am glad that sports activities have resumed, and Jake Jekasa is able to earn a living. Jake has been trying to reach out to sports organizations these days and telling them of the better offers and services they can do. From what I gathered, Jekasa is the only sportswear company where you can directly order the uniforms with no middlemen. Jake said that once they have the order, they can have it made at their own factory and have it directly shipped to the teams. I hope, Jake, that the various tournaments will be in full swing soon and that you are able to make a good deal with them and hopefully, regain the income losses from last year. I noticed the colorful and awesome uniforms used in the recentlyconcluded Servus-St.Albert Ballers Club’s 2K21 League and they turned out to be made by Jekasa Sportswear

ANKARA (Anadolu/PNA)– Emma Raducanu, the hope of British tennis, won the 2021 US Open women's singles title for her first Grand Slam championship. Raducanu, 18, beat her 19-yearold Fil-Canadian opponent, Leylah Fernandez, in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in the all-teen final at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City. Near the end of the exciting match, Raducanu had to have a medical timeout for bleeding to her left knee when she slid on the hardcourt surface. "First of all, I really want to congratulate Leylah and her team. She played some inc'sredible tennis and has beaten some of the top players in the world. The level was extremely high and I hope we play each other in many more tournaments and hopefully finals," Raducanu said and thanked her team, fans and everyone who watched the final. "Thank you for making me feel so at home from my first qualifying

match. You have spurred me on in some difficult moments and I hope me and Leylah put on a good match today," she added. Fernandez praised Raducanu for her performance on the court. "It is incredible. I have no idea what to say. Today is going to be hard but Emma played amazing. Congratulations! I am very proud of myself and having the New York crowd has been amazing. Thank you so much New York. Thank you everyone," said Fernandez whose mother is a Canadian of Filipino descent. Raducanu become the first British woman to win the US Open since 1968 when Virginia Wade took the top prize. Raducanu was awarded the 2021 trophy and USD2.5 million in prize money. Fernandez is returning home with the finalist plate and USD1.25 million. Like Raducanu, it was Fernandez's first major final. Alberta reliving Covid nightmare Diversity & Inclusivity VIEWPOINT

lberta has found itself in the centre of a Covid-19 fourth wave and it has been getting worse as the days and weeks pass. How we got here is simple enough— many Albertans pretended the worst was over. Why we got here was a disaster that unfolded right before our eyes—the province’s leadership threw caution to the wind and declared a full reopening when the coast was not yet clear, so to speak.

As this piece goes to press, Alberta had 15,977 active cases, with 679 patients in the hospital and 154 of them in ICU. Last June 30, the province counted 76 news cases. By Sept. 9, that number had risen to 1,510. It has become so bad that AHS declared a suspension of elective surgeries in hospitals to accommodate the rising number of Covid-19 cases. Close to 2,500 people have died from the virus, and that number is expected to rise further. Several schools around the province have reported Covid-19 outbreaks. An outbreak in a school is defined as a situation where 10 percent or more of students are absent due to Covid-19. As an offshoot of the provincial government’s failed reopening plan, AHS no longer informs schools of individual Covid-19 cases because it is not required to do so. AHS will just investigate reports from schools of suspected outbreaks, and only then will decide whether to declare an outbreak. When public policy on Covid-19 is laid out, it is usually based on public health considerations first. This did not seem to be the case when Jason Kenney and his Conservative government decided on its reopening plan, and it seems apparent there were other considerations that were taken into account. Politics played a large part as Mr. Kenney sought to assuage his base and implemented a back-to-business game plan that

largely ignored recommendations from medical professionals. The most telling argument was Mr. Kenney’s acquiescence to a loud minority that keeps on arguing that restrictions violated the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Despite opinions from constitutional experts that say vaccine mandates do not impinge on such rights, conservative politicians continue to insist otherwise, and some even encourage such thinking. The failure in leadership is forcing Albertans to relive the Covid-19 nightmare all over again. This appears to be a case where we have to bear the consequences of a failed political strategy that translates into tragic pandemic statistics. Frontliners whose emotional scars from having seen the devastation of Covid-19 up close have not yet fully recovered are once again being called upon to man the trenches. It is hard for us Filipinos to see all this unfold and not help make comparisons to events happening in the Philippines. We are in the same boat—a failed political leadership that continues to mismanage the pandemic response, all in the name of cozying up to a largely ignorant and misinformed political base who think their political idols can do no wrong. Take your pick, Mr. Kenney or President Duterte? Either way, I ask myself, why can’t we get away from leaders like them?

Stingers Become First Repeat CEBL Champions

I

t was never in doubt. The Edmonton Stingers became the first repeat champions of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) with a convincing 101-65 win over the Niagara River Lions in front of 2,710 ecstatic fans at the Expo Centre in Edmonton. Xavier Moon, the only MVP the league has ever known, added another title to his basketball resume by claiming the Finals MVP Award presented by Jostens. The Stingers guard recorded a double-double with game highs of 28 points (24 in the second half) and 10 assists. He shot 12-for-18 from the field, including four-for-five from beyond the arc. Despite the spotlight on Moon, this was an incredible team performance.

Edmonton registered 36 assists on 41 field goals. It was the most assists ever by a team in any CEBL game – regular season or playoffs. "It's what we set out to do,” said a champagne-soaked Jermaine Small, head coach of the Stingers and 2021 CEBL Coach of the Year. “You visualize these things and they happen. It almost feels like it's not real sometimes. And then it just became reality. They came out and they played real hard. I got to give them (Niagara) a lot of credit. They're good. We just wanted more." It was the play of Calgary, Alberta native Mathieu Kamba that put this game out of reach early. The Stingers forward took control of the second quarter, pouring in 12 points, missing

only one shot in the frame. Kamba vaulted Edmonton to a 42-29 lead at halftime. He finished the game with 18 points, four rebounds and two steals. The 29 points by Niagara was the fewest in any half in CEBL playoff history. If not, it is high time that we change our leaders and find ones who are fit to lead this multi-cultural country. Gone are the days where they can fake sincerity. People are now awake to the reality of racism. We are all humans. It does not matter if you are Black, White, Asian, Arab or First Nations. Our blood is the same color, we love this country and we all want it to continue to grow as a great nation. If they take diversity and inclusion seriously they must make great efforts to achieve a gradual target of a 60/40 divide with 40 as the minority. This way, voices can be properly heard. A good starting point is 70/30 and to slowly work it up to 40. And I am not talking about Federal Public Officials only, this should also happen in Provincial Politics and Municipal politics and offices. Why Do You Need To Have Competency-Based Experience When Applying For A Professional Engineering License In Canada?

or Internationally Educated Engineers (IEE), applying for a License to Practice in any Province in Canada, their engineering experience needs to be assessed using a Competency-Based Tool. This is difficult to write and submit to regulating bodies if your experience does not translate into the work of an Engineer. The work of an Engineer in Canada is somewhat different from the definition of how Filipino Engineers work in the Philippines. This is perhaps the same with other countries. In Canada, Engineers and Technologists are two different career professions. The educational background is different between engineering technologists and engineers. Engineers focus on the complex undergraduate mathematics courses and classes in the pure sciences, while engineering technologists focus more on the

application of skills through introductory mathematics, survey science courses, and engineering fundamentals. The experience background is also different. APEGA defines the difference as, “Although licensed professionals and technologists both perform work within the practice of engineering or geoscience, technologists can’t do the work of licensed professionals. The difference is licensed professionals work independently and take responsibility for their work, whereas technologists must work under the supervision of a licensed professional.” Hence, if Internationally Educated Engineers would like to apply and seek recognition for their Professional Engineering Degree and Experience in Canada, the quality of their experience must be within the Competency Criteria as set by the recognizing organization. If your job experience is

Engineering in nature, it should match all competencies. Writing your competency need not be complicated. All you need to do is to have your experience (as Engineer-in-Training or as Engineer in your home country) be written, and that it qualifies for each competency. The reason why applicants of the Practice of Professional Engineering in Canada need to write about their experience is that it qualifies to each competency. If the experience does not qualify any of one of the competencies, then the experience is not “Engineering” in nature. Based on your typical workday, you should be able to answer every competency. If this does NOT apply to you, then you cannot proceed in applying as an Engineer. Self-Assessment is key before you apply and even start the process to avoid frustration over the time

and money you spend. Does your work qualify as Engineering Work or otherwise? For an Engineer who performs the job or work, it is not difficult to write the competency because in the self-assessment worksheet, the explanation is very self-explanatory. That is why you must start writing your experience in the selfassessment worksheet and from there, score yourself. If your score does not reach the threshold value, you must gain more experience that qualifies as the work of an Engineer. In my previous Articles with Alberta Filipino Journal, I go over other options on how you can practice your Engineering Profession in Canada. His parents are in Canada on a Supervisa. Anyone who is inside Canada can submit an application for permanent residence on humanitarian and compassionate grounds. The question is do you have strong, compelling reasons and what would your arguments be? Do you have a realistic chance of being accepted? What are the underlying facts of the situation? Being the only child is not enough to submit a PR application under H & C grounds. To submit an application for H & C inside Canada let us examine s.20 (1) (a) of IRPA: 20 (1) Every foreign national, other than a foreign national referred to in section 19, who seeks to enter or remain in Canada must establish, (a) to become a permanent resident, that they hold the visa or other document required under the regulations and have come to Canada in order to establish permanent residence; Before you submit an application for PR through humanitarian and compassionate grounds, make sure that you are not affected by one of

the bars set out in s.25 of IRPA: 25 (1) Subject to subsection (1.2), the Minister must, on request of a foreign national in Canada who applies for permanent resident status and who is inadmissible — other than under section 34, 35 or 37 — or who does not meet the requirements of this Act, and may, on request of a foreign national outside Canada — other than a foreign national who is inadmissible under section 34, 35 or 37 — who applies for a permanent resident visa, examine the circumstances concerning the foreign national and may grant the foreign national permanent resident status or an exemption from any applicable criteria or obligations of this Act if the Minister is of the opinion that it is justified by humanitarian and compassionate considerations relating to the foreign national, taking into account the best interests of a child directly affected. I raised the following points below to the child in Canada: - His parents are still young, in their mid-50s, so are more unlikely to qualify as economic immigrants. - As for their child in Canada, does he meet the Minimum Necessary Income requirements to sponsor his parents if he were to sponsor them through regular Parents and

Grandparents Program? - Are there strong compelling reasons or factors in this case? Strong grounds are needed when requesting an exemption. - Normally, to apply under the H&C grounds, you need to be in circumstances that will relieve the misfortunes of another. Are there any misfortunes in this situation? - What are the circumstances of this family? Things that must be taken into consideration are the level of establishment of the parents from their home country, investments, savings, whether they want to return home, house, family connection and properties. - What about the parents’ level of establishment in Canada? How did they become integrated into the community? Are there any other family connections in Canada? - What is the situation of the parents in their home country? What is the economic and security condition of the home country? - You might want to explore the psychological or emotional condition of the parents or the child in Canada. Separation of the family might cause traumatic impact to the parents or to the son. - Explore if there is any possible alternative for family reunification.

Do the parents qualify under any other immigration category? And most of all, are there any other factors that will evoke a feeling of sympathy or compassion? The above list is not exhaustive but it will help you assess if you have a strong case to submit an application under H&C grounds. Humanitarian and compassionate grounds are meant for those with exceptional cases. This type of application is assessed on a case-by-case basis by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada or IRCC. If the application is refused, there is no right to appeal. In some cases you can ask the Federal Court of Canada to review the decision. ere we go back to school. Oops! Did you experience having romantic excitement while listening and looking at your teacher? Why is society antagonistic towards teacher-student romances? Teacher-student love affairs are improbable because of the In Loco Parentis Doctrine, which means “in the place of a parent”. The teacher assumes parental rights, duties and obligations with his/her students without going through the formalities of legal adoption. Teachers-student love affairs are consequently impossible for a teacher, who acts as a substitute parent by law. In Article 218-219 of The Family Code of the Philippines, it specifies the Special Parental Authority . Article 2018. The school, its administration and teachers, or

the individual, entity or institution engaged in child care shall have special parental authority and responsibility over the minor child while under their supervision, instruction or custody. Authority and responsibility shall apply to all authorized activities whether inside or outside the premises of the school, entity or institution. (349a) Article 219. Those given the authority and responsibility under the preceding Article shall be principally and solidarily liable for damages caused by the acts or omission of the unemancipated minor. The parents, judicial guardians or the person exercising substitute parental authority over said minor shall be subsidiarily liable. The respective liabilities of those referred to in the preceding

paragraph shall not apply if it is proven that they exercised the proper diligence required under the particular circumstances. All other cases not covered by this and the preceding articles shall be governed by the provisions of the Civil Code on quasi-delicts. The decrees justify the accountabilities of the teacher as a substitute parents with their students. Additionally, students are protected by Philippine laws against abuses such as; the RA 7610, or Special Protection on Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act; the RA 7977, or the Anti-Sexual harassment Act of 1995; and The D.O 40 series 2012 or Department of Education Child Protection Policy. ​A breakthrough case of ChuaQua v. Clave, wherein the Supreme Court ruled in favor of “Love”. In this case, a 30-year-old teacher had

married her 16-year-old student which incited the school to terminate her. However, the Supreme Court Ruled in Favor of her. Henceforward, it further held that: “the finding of unsubstantial evidence of alleged immoral acts fail; the alleged violation of the Code of Ethics governing school teacher would be of no basis…if the two eventually fell in love, despite the disparity in their ages and academic levels, this only lends substance to the truism that the heart has reasons of its own which reason does not know.” The millennial generation has an extensive love lingo vocabulary. Social media has a huge impact on transforming socio-cultural viewpoints. Nevertheless, teachers ought to be guided by the law. The judgment of the land is not always a Chua -Qua v. Clave. he parish priest of a small town arrived at the church encouraged and motivated to perform another evening Mass, but the hour passed and the town did not come. After 15 minutes delay, three children entered, after 20 minutes two young people entered. So the priest decided to start the mass with the five people . Over the course of Mass, a couple came in who sat on the last benches of the church. When the priest preached and explained the Gospel, another halfdirty person came in with a rope in his hand. Disappointed and not understanding the cause of the weak involvement of the faithful, the priest celebrated Mass with love and preached with enthusiasm and zeal.

On his way back home he was robbed and beaten by two thieves who carried his folder where his Bible and other valued belongings were. Arriving at the parish house, making the bandages of the wounds, described that day as: The saddest day of my life, a failure of my ministry, and the most unfruitful day of my career; but... never mind, I do everything with God and for Him. After five years, the priest decided to share this story with parishioners at church. When he was finished telling the story, a couple in that parish stopped him and said, ′′Father, the couple in the story that sat at the back was us. We were on the brink of separation because of several problems and disagreements in our home. That night we finally decided to divorce, but first we decided to come to church one last time as a couple and then each one would follow their path. Meanwhile, we left the thought of divorce aside after listening to your homily that same night. As a consequence, today we are here with our home and family restored". As the couple spoke, one of the most successful entrepreneurs who helped in the livelihood of that church saluted, asking to speak and giving him the opportunity said, ′′Father, I am the person who came in half dirty with a rope in my hand. I was on the verge of bankruptcy, lost in drugs, my wife and my kids had left home on account of my behavior. That night I tried to kill myself but the rope broke so I went out to buy another one. When I got on my way, I saw the church open, I decided to come in even though I was really dirty and had a rope in my hand. That night, your homily pierced my heart and I walked out of here a changed person. Today I'm off the drugs, my family came home and I became the most successful businessman in the town." entrance, the Deacon shouted, ′′Father, I was one of those thieves who stole your belongings. The other one died that same night while we were doing the second robbery. In his briefcase, there was a Bible. I read it every time I woke up in the morning. After all this reading, I decided to apply it to my life and participate in this church." The priest was shocked and started crying along with the faithful. After all, that night he regarded as a night of failure was a very productive night.

In the worst days of your life you can still be a blessing to someone else. God can use the ′′bad circumstances′′ of a life to produce the best for others.

MORAL OF THE STORY Exercise your calling (work/mission) with dedication and zeal. Give it your best every day, because you are an instrument of good for someone's life.

He is also a Global Council Representative for Canada of the International Migrants Alliance, a global alliance of grassroots organizations in the Asia-Pacific, Europe, Middle East, Latin and North America. Marco came to Montreal in 1986. He is a co-founder of the Immigrant Workers Centre in Montreal and the Canada-wide alliance Migrante Canada. He has a background in Community Economic Development. Marco was a union representative and labour educator for public and private sector unions for 20 years before moving to Edmonton in 2013. Dr Lynette Shultz Professor and Director of the Centre for Global Citizenship Education and Research, University of Alberta, Canada Dr. Shultz is also co-editor of the Journal of Contemporary Issues in Education. Patrick de Belen and the Power of the Spoken Word ARTOSPECTIVE - an artist’s point of view

his year’s elections, both federal and municipal, and recent leadership debates bring to mind a spoken word video that went viral when it aired in 2019 for CBC’s live federal election special. The piece was “Raise Your Voice Above the Noise” by Patrick de Belen, with singing vocals by Victoria Marie and musical arrangement by Zlender. In that same year, Patrick also released “Make Your Voice Heard”, on youth voting. Patrick de Belen (PDB) is a spoken word poet, performer, speaker, host, educator, and director based in Toronto. Born to Filipino immigrant parents, growing up surrounded with music served as his introduction to storytelling. Brandon Wint writes, “Patrick is one of the most well-respected voices within the local, national, and international spheres of performance poetry. He is an undeniable pillar of insight, devotion and energy for poets in his

Election (Promises) Time Once Again MIGRANTS' VOICES

O

n August 15, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Federal elections would be held. At the time of writing this article, candidates from different parties are well on their way campaigning. The usual election drama and party politics are now at their peaks. Parties and candidates promised the world to its constituencies. But the loser in every election, be it Federal, Provincial or Municipal, are the migrants. Why? Simply because migrants cannot vote. Migrants’ issues are always at the bottom of a candidate’s platform or agenda. However, looking into the different party’s election platforms, here are some items that concern immigration. On Temporary foreign workers The Liberals plan to reform the economic immigration programs to expand the pathway to permanent residency for temporary foreign workers and former international students through the Express Entry

point system. They will establish a “Trusted Employer” system to streamline application process for companies hiring temporary foreign workers for positions that cannot be filled by Canadian workers. They also plan to establish an employer hotline and allow Canadian companies to attract and hire highly skilled workers. The Libs also plan to develop a sectorspecific Agricultural Labour Strategy with employers and labour unions to address persistent labour shortages. The Conservatives, however, will create pathways to residence for those that are already living and working in Canada. They will “rework” the Temporary Foreign Workers Program (TFWP) to better align it with domestic needs. The Conservatives like the Liberals will create a “trusted employer”system so that companies do not have to constantly reapply to the program. The Cons also indicated that the pathway to permanence will be through allowing employers to sponsor migrants’ applications for permanent residency. The New Democratic Party does not have much to say about the TFWP other than they believe that if someone is good enough to work here, there should be a path for them to stay permanently. They added that we must treat the caregivers that come to Canada with respect and dignity by providing them with status and allowing them to reunite with their families without delay. On International Students As mentioned above, the Liberals are saying that they will expand the reform of the economic immigration program to include a pathway to permanent residency for international students similarly through the Express Entry points system. The Conservatives and the NDP have nothing to say about this sector.

On Refugees The Liberals promised to build on the Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot to work with employers and communities across Canada. They will also welcome 2000 skilled refugees to fill labour shortages in in-demand sectors such as health care. They will also expand the new immigration stream for human rights defenders and work with civil society groups to ensure the safe passage and resettlement of people under threat including refugees from Afghanistan. They will continue to facilitate resettlement of Afghan citizens and will increase the numbers of eligible refugees from 20,000 to 40,000. The Cons on the other hand will increase the capacity to hear asylum claims but was not clear on the number of refugees they are planning to take in. They will replace the government sponsorship with private and joint sponsorship programs. The Cons will also end “illegal” border crossings and unofficial points of entry. They will work with the US to set up joint border patrols. The NDP has no clear plan for the refugees. They only talked about getting rid of the backlog and supporting refugees. On Family Reunification The Liberals will reduce the processing times that have been impacted by Covid-19 to twelve months. They will introduce an electronic application for family reunification. They will also implement a program to issue visas to spouses and children while

they wait to process their permanent residency. The Cons will replace the family sponsorship lottery system with combining the first come, first serve idea and prioritizing applicants on criteria such as providing childcare, family support and language proficiency. They said that they will also significantly expand the Super Visa Program for parents and grandparents. The New Democrats will end the cap to sponsor parents and grandparents. They will ensure that the backlogs are dealt with. On Citizenship Only the Liberals talked about making the citizenship application process free. The Cons and the New Democrats have nothing to say about it. On Undocumented migrants The Conservatives talk about strengthening integrity and enforcement. This means that there will be more crack downs and deportation. The Liberals and the NDP did not address the issues of undocumented migrants in their platform. Overall, the Liberals will continue with the same old promises. Promising “Path to Permanent Residency” through Express Entry while at the same time, they intend to continue to expand the TFWP. They will be dependent on “Trusted Employer” for LMIA. Their promise to increase the refugee intake to 40,000 might fall on a dead end again like Marco Mendicino’s promise to bring in a million skilled workers, family members and refugees into Canada within three years. The New Democrats are no different from the Liberals except that they

have no plans on how to make good with their promises. It’s the Conservatives that have dangerous plans in reshaping Canada’s immigration system. The immigration platform that they have came out of the US Trump-style immigration policy. The national advocacy coalition, Migrants Rights Network (MRN) says that the Conservatives plan to start US-style border patrols and expand the Safe Third Country Agreement, which will make it even more dangerous for refugees to come into Canada. This would give armed US border Police the power to stop and arrest refugees inside Canada.Their Plan to scrap Canada’s government assisted refugee resettlement program will mean major cuts and would transfer their responsibilities to us, the Canadians. The Conservatives would also make it easier for employers to hire migrant workers on tied work permits. And these workers’ “path to permanence” will now be dependent on employer sponsorship. This will give more power to bad employers who can use the promise of immigration to further exploit migrants and keep them silent. Generally, Canada immigration under a Conservative Party will be big business at the backs of migrant slave labour. On September 20, please go out and vote. And please vote with your conscience. While election is a democratic exercise, it will still be up to us, the people, the Canadians that will hold these leaders accountable to their promises though our collective organizing efforts.

His commissioned work includes: “True North” for Sportsnet for the Toronto Raptors during the 2017 NBA Playoff Season; “My Coach Taught Me”, for NFL Players Association youth training camps in Chicago and Houston; “Raise Your Voice Above the Noise”, for CBC on the 2019 Canadian Federal Election; “Hidden Hero Spoken Work”, for World Vision Canada, highlighting how the pandemic is changing the world. Patrick’s works are commentaries on social issues: “Where Things Come From” for anti child labour campaign; “Orange is the New Crack”, a piece in retaliation to an incident where his parents were harrassed by a Canadian Trump supporter, and was part of the CBC Arts series”Poetic License”; “Laugh” about the “complexities of coping, resilience and the search for silver-linings in the darkest of places.” His works cover a wide range - i.e. of childhood memories, prejudices and racism, abandonment and the disorientation of immigrating, belonging with family but away from home, and solace in writing. In 2020, he released In Between Lines, a multimedia project consisting of a spoken word album, animated videos, digital chapbook, tele-poem experience and writing challenges via social media platforms as a way to engage the community, and spur creative juices. Tia Julien of Dominionated.ca writes, “In Between Lines is the unholy offspring of music, poetry, dance, cinematography, and friendship; a tribute to the power of collaboration… The simple mix of instruments lends an affective softness to de Belen’s profound lyricism, setting some

harsh realities against gentle tones. Dealing with some of the human experiences that are often omitted or obscured from popular media, de Belen dives headfirst into fear.” Here, he talks about his mental health illnesses, spirituality, and finding purpose. Aside from his performances, Patrick works on arts education and mentorship, he is the Director of BAM! Toronto Youth Poetry Slam, and the facilitator of the Filipino Storytelling workshop series, “Poetry is Our Second Language”. Patrick has also designed and facilitated spoken word curricula, for advocacies on social justice, mental health, arts therapy, leadership and team building, public speaking and creative writing. He has partnered with schools, libraries, correctional facilities, mental health centers and youth spaces in the delivery of his programs. Patrick de Belen uses storytelling to build and serve his community. He works to rally the youth in living the life they aim to have, and own their voice. He works in providing “more platforms for FilipinoCanadians to share their writing and that storytelling spirit that has always been important in being connected to Filipino culture”.

Orange Shirt Day – September 30

A

n orange shirt and September 30 have now become symbols of residential school awareness. Recently, the federal government made September 30 a stat holiday. Alberta has chosen not to recognize this holiday. The explanation is that people in Alberta didn’t want to package the effects of residential schools to just one day when so much work is needed to continue to bring awareness to citizens of Canada. Residential schools were presented as boarding schools that would bring education to the indigenous population. During that time, the landscape of Canada was changing and people were not made aware of the true intentions of these schools. And so, some children were sent off willingly. The origin of Orange Shirt Day is in relation to the true story of Phyllis Webstad, who in 1973 attended her first day of school in an orange shirt bought especially for the occasion. When she arrived

at school, her shirt was taken from her, never to be returned, and her hair was cut. This was the start of her being treated poorly just for being indigenous. Remembering this incident, she wrote, “The colour orange has always reminded me of how my feelings didn’t matter, how no one cared. I went to a treatment centre for healing when I was 27 and have been on this healing journey since then. I finally get it, that the feeling of worthlessness and insignificance, ingrained in me from my first day at the mission, affected the way I lived my life for many years.” As this experience has been shared and it was recognized that so many other indigenous children went through these feelings, it is appropriate that the orange shirt is a true example of the impact of residential schools on the entire indigenous population. In wearing an orange shirt, it shows that a person knows about

residential schools, recognizes that trauma that indigenous people carry and that they are willing to know the truth of Canada’s genocide. It is also an effective way for children today to connect with their grandparents and parents who went to residential schools. My nieces and nephews wear their orange shirts, letting people know that their grandfather is a residential school survivor. I grew up not knowing about residential schools until I became an adult. My father and his siblings did not talk about their childhoods. Their childhoods were something to truly have been survived. I could not even explain to others why being indigenous always felt like being very separate from mainstream society. I thought it was because I had a status number and was connected to an Indian band and that was why. Today I realize it is because this country was built on that division and the intention of targeting the

indigenous specifically in keeping them from knowing their culture and being indigenous. The anger and resentment that is felt in just thinking about this could take over and have me walking around being quite bitter but I know deep down that is not the spirit of my heritage. The resiliency of my ancestry will always have me working towards reconciliation and living in peace and harmony. I believe that sharing this honest perspective with you that our minds and hearts could grow in understanding and compassion for the indigenous population, and that we are more than victims of genocide. As we continue to be candid and open, we will learn to trust this country and the people in it because of the deep hope that this country does care about the healing of the indigenous population. Resources to get Involved in Politics By Giselle General

he personal is political. This statement holds so much truth. The decisions that politicians make affect our lives in many ways, some of them can be immediate, and some are felt long-term. Here is a list of some ideas for everyday people like us, even including those who are not yet citizens, to help become more involved in the political processes here in the city. Filipino Canadian Political Association: This organization launched in early 2021, and their goal is help Filipino Canadians be engaged in political life in Canada, which includes getting passionate people elected. https://filcanpolitics.ca/ is the website and here is how you can help: - Increase representation of Filipino Canadians from the prairies: A majority of the members are from eastern Canada, which makes sense given the number of Filipinos there. But it is just as important for us Albertans to participate and share resources.

- Follow them on social media: They have Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts with a lot of great information and regular updates. If you use social media you can stay up to date and identify opportunities to participate. Supporting Current Filipino Candidates: There are two Filipino candidates running for various City Councillor positions in Edmonton. Providing support can increase the chances of having up to two Filipino city councillors this October! Myself (Giselle General, www.gisellegeneral. ca) and Iannie Gerona www.gerona. ca/. Here’s how you can help out in simple and practical ways: - Donate: Any resident of the city can donate to any candidate even if the candidate is running for a position across the city. Even small donations add up. - Volunteer: It is costly to hire people for various services. If you have a few hours to share, for tasks that take

a lot of time, like door-knocking or delivering flyers, it makes a huge impact. - Spread the Word: Many of us know others who live in other parts of the city. Mentioning that a kababayan is running can help spread awareness and increase support. Constituency Associations for Provincial and Federal Parties: If you are someone who is passionate about provincial and federal politics, joining the constituency association is something to consider. They do a lot of advocacy and preparation for months and even years before an actual election is called. It is a great opportunity to learn the behind the scenes of a political party, share ideas on what direction the party should go, make an impact on a local level, and potentially, once you are eligible to run for public office, you might end up being the representative of that political party in the next election. - Provincial - Alberta Party: https:// www.albertaparty.ca/ca_directory

"The language is such an integral part of the music. So much meaning and emotion in so few words. It’s truly beautiful." She shared, "I was watching a travel video on YouTube, and the song was playing in the background as the host was walking down the street. (So) I used Shazam to find the song and artist. When I heard the song, it’s hard to describe...I just felt something deep inside my heart. A pain, a longing. Something truly lost. Not to mention Jaya’s soulful rendition. And when I read the translation, I understood why I felt that way. A song that can communicate its story without understanding the words is a true piece of art, and I knew one day I would sing it - not just to myself - but to the world." She added, "So when we met the composer of 'Dahil Ba Sa Kanya` Freddie Saturno - over Zoom to ask his permission to cover it, he told us the song was based on a true story. And I loved it even more." Asked how she felt about the reception of her fans to her cover, Sahara admitted she was amazed, shocked, and mostly blessed. Known as a world-class, classically trained singer, Sahara said singing Tagalog (OPM) songs are very challenging compared to other foreign (language) songs. "Definitely harder. There are several sounds that aren’t common in other languages. Especially the “ng” sound in words

like 'Tanging'". And while she can belt out expertly in English, Spanish, French, Italian and German, Sahara loves Tagalog for the unique way it expresses emotion and meaning. "Why I love singing in Tagalog? It's the passion. So much passion. A single word can express so much joy or sorrow, and as an emotional artist it’s very fulfilling. To be honest, the passion in OPM is missing in so much of modern Western music. The world could learn something from OPM. I can’t imagine singing anything else." Sahara is currently working on a soft album of original OPM with some of the best Filipino composers and arrangers. "The people we’re working with have been the biggest names in OPM for decades. My co-producer - Dennis Quila - is an OPM icon. I can tell you we have a duet in the works, as well several original Tagalog compositions. And I can also tell you we have a special surprise coming for Christmas."

Asked what other OPM songs she enjoys listening/singing to, Sahara exclaimed she can’t get enough of "Sayang na Sayang" by Aegis. "I listen to it at least once a day and I always get chills." Sahara describes her musical style as very eclectic and very passionate. "I love so many different genres of music, and the cultures they come from, it’s very difficult for me to limit myself to just one and say, 'I’m this kind of artist.' But OPM changed that." "As an artist, I always focus on the emotions of the chords, melody and lyrics. Even when I sing in a foreign language, I make sure I understand not just the words, but also the idioms of the culture they come from." The passionate singer is also part of NeonDuet, a musical duo which consists of Michael Todd “m.t.” Glazier. They recently released a dance single "(We Can Be) As One". The Immigration Guy: Immigration and the 2021 Election This month, amidst the activity of the Canadian Federal Election, we wanted to share our thoughts and research on the main party platforms and their stance on immigration. Enjoy! We placed the parties in order of popular support in Alberta

Conservative Party of Canada – Erin O’Toole

Even though the media perception of the Conservatives in Canada has generally labeled them anti-immigration, the 2021 variant of the CPC is much more centric leaning than the previous incarnations. Mr. O’Toole promises to introduce a fee system where an applicant would pay extra to have their immigration papers expedited. They would use the added revenue to hire more immigration staff to help reduce the infamous backlogs that extend the processing times. The Conservatives promise to also allow family members of Canadians to visit and stay in Canada for up to five years without permanent status. We are not sure if the intent of this policy is to extend the eligibility and parameters of the super visa, but it would allow family members easier access to come visit their family here in Canada. O’Toole promises to beef up accountability by recording all transactions between immigration officers and applicants and moving all operations to an online based system. The platform quotes, “to help ensure oversight, fairness, and accountability”. Most notably, the Conservatives would toss out the Parent and Grandparent sponsorship program lottery system and replace it with a first-come firstserve system like the other family class programs. They would also add a language component and prioritize applicants with home care needs or family support needs. O’Toole seems more focused on fixing a broken system and has not indicated if we would increase or reduce overall permanent residence numbers – which quite frankly is practical and impacting. On refugees, O’Toole has pledged to match or possibly exceed the refugee levels set by Stephen Burry the Liberals. Despite the issues Stephen Burry is the Lead of immigration policy during the Consultant and owner of CPC government of the late 2000s Freedom Migrate Immigration Solutions Limited, an immigration and 2010s, the Conservatives consultancy firm based in Calgary, seem to have turned a corner on Alberta. Liberal Party of Canada – Justin Trudeau

The Liberals are promising to continue their plan of focusing on in-Canada temporary residents to qualify them for permanent residency. Mr. Trudeau and his government presided over the COVID-19 pandemic and refocused immigration efforts to encourage temporary residents to become permanent residents and citizens by issuing historically high intake draws in the express entry system. Candidates currently living in Canada with in-Canada work experience or study experience and adaptability scores were offered invitations during the pandemic. The Liberals have committed to the 2021-2023 immigration levels plan that will see over 400,000 new

dobo is said to be the most famous Filipino dish. From pork to chicken to kangkong or anything else in between, the many variations created through the years is a testament to its popularity. It is our national dish according to many. Each Filipino cook most probably has a favorite version of it that he/she loves to cook for family and friends or for arestaurant. I have my own favorite too – my pork ribs adobo. Pork ribs are perfect for me because they have the right amount of fat embedded around the bones and meat that lends moisture and, when cooked properly, results in very tender fall-off-the-bone adobo ribs. How do you cook perfect adobo consistently each time? A perfect balance between the basic taste elements of salty and sour is the foundation of any great adobo. To achieve it consistently, use equal proportions of vinegar and soy sauce permanent residents in 2021 and topups to account for declines during COVID to keep them on track. The levels plan would call for over 1 million new permanent residents by 2023. The Trudeau government has also focused on introducing pilot programs to encourage immigration outside of the big cities. Unknown yet if the Liberals will stick to their 2015 era plan of introducing a municipal nomination program where municipalities can directly fill their own immigration needs and attract immigrants away from the big cities to fill local demand in smaller markets. On refugees, the Liberals have promised to accept at least 20,000 Afghan refugees as part of a coordinated effort among western allies. The Liberal immigration policy is more implied than it is stated. We found it difficult to get hard numbers in their platform, however the Liberals talk a lot about what they have already done and what their commitments were prior to the election call. Once again, we

all the time, adjusting both equally when you need to cook more. Keep in mind that the saltiness of soy sauce changes with the brand, so in my experience, either Marca Pina or Kikkoman soy sauce works in equal proportions with the vinegar I use for my adobo. Marinating adds flavour and moisture to the meat. So, marinate meat for an hour or two to make your adobo more tender and delicious. Searing is necessary if you want a more flavourful meat. To sear, fry your marinated meat in a pan at high temperature until it is caramelized and browned on the surface. You can then add all the other ingredients for the actual cooking. I don’t add any salt to my adobo if you happen to wonder if I just missed it in my list of ingredients below. I also don’t add water as we already have enough liquids added, plus the meat itself gives off a lot of its water while cooking. Rest assured expect the Liberals to be the top dog on immigration policy.

New Democratic Party – Jagmeet Singh

The New Democrats are promising to cleanup the backlogs of the system and scrap the Parent and Grandparent lottery system. They talk about reducing the backlog of the refugee program and tackling wage discrimination affecting immigrant women. Most of the NDP policy on immigration is vague and generalized, however we expect that their impact in a potential minority government would be very large. Keep an eye on Mr. Singh and his views as they will likely have significant power in a minority Liberal or Conservative government.

People’s Party of Canada – Maxime Bernier

Likely to be the most restrictive and impacting immigration policy, the platform of Maxime Bernier and

that you’ll have enough sauce in your adobo when it’s done. The trick is to slow cook at low temperature in a covered pan. So, if you ask if you can use your slow cooker for this, the answer is yes. You just need to sear the meat in the pan first and it’s now ready to go into your slow cooker with the rest of the ingredients. This version of pork ribs adobo was served at Casa Laurel Kitchen. What You Need: 2 kg pork baby back ribs (or side ribs) ½ cup white vinegar ½ cup regular soy sauce ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce 1 whole bulb garlic, minced 1 big onion, sliced 7 pieces bay leaf ½ tbsp peppercorns 1 cube pork soup base 2 red chili peppers (or more according to taste) 1/3 cup breadcrumbs Vegetable oil for pan frying What To Do: 1. Wash meat. Drain and dry with paper towels. the PPC on immigration is what you would expect from a smaller party in the far-right of the political spectrum. Mr. Bernier promises to cut permanent resident levels from 350,000 per year to about 100,000 per year. They would end birth right citizenship for temporary residents who give birth in Canada and drastically reduce the temporary foreign worker system. Their plan would require every immigrant coming to Canada to attend a faceto-face interview with a reviewing immigration officer and would focus immigration to largely economic only. The plan relies heavily on redirecting jobs to Canadians in the wake of high unemployment. However, the reality remains that we continue to be dogged by labour shortages in many industries despite the perception of unemployment levels and immigration levels being connected. We see that the PPC immigration plan does not address the positive factors that tie immigration levels to economic growth. It does

2. Mix vinegar, soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce. Add half minced garlic. 3. Add meat into the mixture. Cover and marinate in the fridge for at least one hour. 4. Remove meat from marinade. Set aside the marinade. Divide meat into small portions. 5. Heat a pan at high temperature and add 1 tbsp of oil. Fry one portion of meat until brown on both sides. Repeat frying the remaining portions one after the other. 6. Sauté remaining garlic in oil. Add onions and cook for 2 minutes. Add browned meat together with the marinade. Add bay leaf, peppercorns, pork cube and chili peppers. 7. Cover the pan and allow to boil. Once boiling, turn heat down to low. 8. Cover pan and slow cook for 90 to 120 minutes, stirring occasionally. Slow cooking makes your adobo fall off the bone tender and delicious. 9. Add breadcrumbs 10 minutes before the end of the cooking period. Stir in. 10. Enjoy! ♥

THE ATTITUDE OF A COMPASSIONATE SPIRIT OUR TEXT “Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.” Matthew 5:7 1. THE MERCIFUL. a) This, like the rest, is a paradox. - The merciful are not regarded to be the wisest nor are they likely to be the richest. - Yet, the Lord Jesus Christ pronounces them blessed. - Those are the merciful, which are piously and charitably inclined to pity, to help and to succor persons in misery. - A person may be truly merciful, who has not wherewithal to be bountiful or liberal, and then God accepts the willing mind. -We must not only bear our own afflictions patiently, but we must, by Christian sympathy, partake of the afflictions of our brethren. - Pity must be shown ( Job 16:14), and bowels of mercy put on (Colossians 3:12); and being put on, God’s people must put forth themselves in contributing

all they can for the assistance of those who are in any way in misery. They must have compassion on the souls of others and help them. - They must pity the ignorant and instruct them; the careless, and warn them; those who are in a state of sin, and snatch them as brands out of the burning. - As God’s people, we must have compassion on those who are melancholy and in sorrow, and comfort them (Job 16:5). To those whom we have advantage against, we should not be rigorous and severe with them. To those who are in great need, we must provide what they lack. - If we refuse to do these things, whatever we pretend, we shut up the bowels of our compassion ( James 2:15, 16; 1 John 3:17). - Therefore, draw out thy souls by dealing thy bread to the hungry (Isaiah 58:7, 10). Nay, a good man is merciful to his beast. 2. THE PROMISED BLESSING. a) They shall obtain mercy. - Mercy with men when they need it.

This is a reciprocating action—he that waters shall also be watered himself. - Why? Because we don’t know how soon we may stand in need of kindness. Therefore, we should always be kind to others. - But if we know the mercy of God, we are going to receive mercy if we ourselves are merciful (Psalm 18:25; Romans 9:15). b) The most merciful and charitable cannot pretend to merit but must fly to mercy.

- The merciful shall find with God: 1) Sparing mercy (Matthew 6:14); 2) Supplying mercy (Proverbs 19:17; cf. 2 Corinthians 9:6); and 3) Mercy in that day (2 Timothy 1:18). c) They shall inherit the kingdom prepared for them (Matthew 25:34 & 35). - Whereas they shall have judgment without mercy (which can be nothing short of hell fire) who have shown no mercy.

oday the gospel warns us about being judgmental. “You hypocrite! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother’s eye.” The hypocrite is the one who corrects others but fails to see their own mistakes. The impostor is the one who is comfortable in living in the pit of pretension. We are hypocrites if we are quick to see the flaws of others but refuse to admit our own. Hypocrites are those who are quick to point an accusing finger yet never have the courage and humility to point the same accusing finger at themselves. In life, those who judge and criticize others often are avoiding some truth abouth themselves. Friends, whenever we wish to correct the faults of others, let us make it sure that those faults do not lie within us first. Today, let us avoid becoming a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Challenge: Let us be aware of our own shortcomings and mistakes before we judge others. Instead of criticizing, find ways to help. Let us remove the monster from within ourselves before attacking the devil that is in others. Friends, Jesus was not against people pointing out other’s sins. It is our moral obligation. It is our moral responsibility to rectify what is not right. However, in

Annual Thanksgiving in Honor of Sta. Rosa De Lima Natives of Teresa, Rizal celebrated the feast day of their Patron Saint, Santa Rosa de Lima at Laurier Park, Edmonton last August 21, 2021. Religiously, this whole-day event was highlighted by the traditional

recitation of prayer followed by a procession while singing and dancing around the park as an expression of thanksgiving for all the blessings being bestowed upon them through the intercession of Sta. Rosa De Lima.

Sumptuous food filled the tables. Manny Pacquiao’s fight against Ugas coincided with this celebration but never created a conflict of what event would be prioritized. If Las Vegas had Manny Pacquiao, this

group of devotees had their Manny Arban as their Zumba instructor. While dancing, they were joined by other nationalities who were enticed by the unifying power of dance and music.

Update on the Journey of a First-Time Councillor Candidate GENERAL POINT OF VIEW

She completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta, and has a career in the nonprofit sector. She works at the Edmonton Community Legal Centre, which provides free legal help to low-income Edmontonians. She channels her creativity by writing in her personal blog, FilipinaYEG, and self-published a book called The Humanity of Me, and is active in numerous volunteer-based initiatives.

y journey of being a first-time candidate for Edmonton City Council is coming to an end on October 18, Election Day! Here is my reflection of the journey of being right in the front lines of a campaign. It is much harder than anticipated. When I first told my brother that I am running, he was scared for my safety! It made sense, given how dangerous it is to run for public office in the Philippines. I reassured him that I likely won’t get murdered here, win or lose. But that doesn’t mean that there are no dangers. As a visibly Asian woman, the risk of racists attacking me is a possibility, given the rise of Anti-Asian Hate due to COVID. There are even practical dangers, as well; many people’s stairs, entryways and landscaping are not always stable, so a slip and fall is a risk when going to thousands of homes. The harsh reality that it takes money and connections to run for public office became evident. Expenses pile up really quickly. I am running against the current councillor, who spent $84,000 in her campaign in 2017. I wondered, how can I even match that? Advertising in bus shelters are at least $1,000, billboards start at $1,500. I spent $2,500 earlier this year for flyers and $3,500 on lawn signs, as name

recognition is paramount to being successful. I see many candidates who get a lot of help, in terms of time, money, and connections, from their parents, and my heart breaks into a thousand pieces every time. It’s a painful reminder of losing my parents too soon. I tearfully wondered every time, in what way would they have helped if they are still alive? Would my parents be proud? Would they think their daughter is crazy for being this ambitious? COVID is a mixed blessing when it comes to attending events and

activities. Typically, in an election campaign, there is a lot of traveling involved for meetings and gatherings, and it would have taken so much time while taking public transit, or I would need to spend a lot of money taking taxis, or a lot of stress arranging rides from other people. The switch to digital for many meetings and tasks proved to be helpful. This campaign journey is also quite incredible in many ways that continue to uplift me. As of writing this, I got $17,000 worth of donations, money sent through e-transfers and online payments as well as in-kind

donations, it’s just remarkable. For many weekends in the spring and summer, people joined me in delivering flyers to neighbourhoods so I don’t have to spend money on postage. Professionals shared their skills voluntarily, from websites design, graphic design, translating my flyers, mapping routes, strategy, and more! Another remarkable thing is connecting with people who are not within my immediate network, those who, after researching all the candidates, discovered that I have what it takes to be their next Edmonton City Councillor. This experience opened my eyes to the simple and complex reasons why our political system is the way it is right now. I really wish that for immigrants, women, and workingclass people, that running for politics was not this cumbersome. After the election, this is something that I want to address, by finding a way to share all the lessons learned from this campaign journey. This election candidacy is a journey five years in the making. I hope that by October 18, that history can be made for the sake of the Filipino community in Edmonton and in Alberta, that I can be the first Filipina-Canadian councillor that Edmonton has.

The Lakers’ New Signings – Will They Go on a Championship Run?

ith the Los Angeles Lakers having an unsuccessful post-season which featured a first-round knockout to the Phoenix Suns, General Manager Rob Pelinka knew some off-season trades needed to be made if the 2020 NBA champions wanted to head back to the finals in 2022. Lebron James is trying to add a couple more championships to his already coveted resume, and the superstar is set to turn 37 years old this season. ​Some key signings this offseason include the return of Rajon Rondo and Dwight Howard who were instrumental in the Lakers’ 2020 Championship run. Rondo is a solid ball handler who can control the tempo of the game for times when James happens to be off the court. Something the Lakers lacked last

season was size and depth on their roster. With the signing of Howard and Deandre Jordan, the Lakers look to be a much larger squad, not to mention that Marc Gasol will also be returning to the Lakers this season. By having these three juggernauts at the five position, this allows coach Frank Vogel to be flexible in terms of where Anthony Davis can be from the 3-5 positions. To add some more big names to the Lake Show, they have also signed 32-year-old Russell Westbrook and 37-year-old Carmelo Anthony who can bring some much needed scoring to the team. Anthony is someone who can come off the bench at least 15 minutes a night and give the Lakers a momentum run with a few made three-pointers and a couple mid-range jumpers. O ​ ne of the criticisms of all these

signings made by Pelinkais was about the overall age of the Lakers. Many critics believe that this team would be dominant if everyone was still in their prime. This is understandable as the approximate average age of the Lakers is 32 and the NBA is only getting younger. There has also been criticism of how the WestbrookJames dynamic will work as both

constantly need the ball in their hands. At the end of the day, as NBA fans across the nation, we can only watch the season play out and see these superstars put in the work. ​Some other notable off-season signings for the Lakers include Malik Monk, Wayne Ellington, Trevor Ariza, Kent Bazemore, and Kendrick Nunn.

Celebrations for Linny’s 44th Birthday Party and Academy of Alberta Health Services’ Successful Launch Linny V. Aberia’s 44th birthday party, which was celebrated at the Holiday Inn Conference Center last August 28th 2021, also turned out to be a successful fete by the Academy of Alberta Health Care Services (AHCS), honouring the students and school achievements since it was founded three years ago. Linny Aberia and her co founder Malot Angeles Rivera established this school of learning catering to health care services. It is a multicultural school

of universal learning for healthcare services which has attracted over 250 enrolees in the span of 3 years. The founders Malot and Linny showered the guests, instructors and students with first class hospitality, offering delicious meals and drinks and superb entertainment acts participated in by different nationalities. There were raffle prizes, and the awarding of student achievements for groups and individuals. A ‘Cebu Sinulog ‘ cultural and religious dance

was re-enacted with lavish, costumes, ‘Harana’ solos and duet songs were also performed by Grace Dalit, JoAnn Cortejos, Abigail Mendoza and Betcristie Iglesias. Awards were given out for Best Dressed costumes, Best Clinical Practice, and an award for Surviving Bullying at Work. Line danced to the tunes of Chacha and Mama Mia.
