Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship recently announced the Government of Canada's immigration plan that will increase the number of permanent residents starting next year until 2020.
Starting with 310,000 new permanent residents in 2018, and growing to 330,000 in 2019 and 340,000 in 2020. I believed this is the highest number by far and the most ambitious immigration levels in Canadian immigration history. Minister Hussen said "that this historic multi-year immigration levels plan will benefit all Canadians because immigrants will contribute their talents to support our economic growth and innovation, helping to keep our country at the forefront of the global economy."With approximately 60 percent of the increase over the three year period, in the economic category, this plan aims at distributing the benefits of
immigration across Canada, as a response to a unanimous request by provinces and territories earlier this fall. Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) says that the increased levels will create the space needed to reduce backlogs and decrease processing times for families sponsoring spouses, children, parents, grandparents and caregivers. The 2018-2020 multi-year immigration levels plan also fulfills the government's commitment to offer protection to those in need. As per the Supplementary Information for the 2018-2020 Immigration Levels Plan you will find on the Table below the target 2018 number of permanent residents to be admitted by immigration category:

They started announcing on social media where they were going to be that day and people showed up in huge crowds to get a work out led by professional athletes. The grassroots movement carried on way past November and "tribe members" (as they call themselves) brought the November Project concept to other cities across the United States.

When former Edmonton Oilers captain Andrew Ference moved to Edmonton, he started the first November Project tribe in Canada. When he is in town, he's there to lead the exercises and high five you as you power through the outdoor challenges. When he’s not, the workouts are led by Jen Ference and Nadim Chin. Our northern climate adds the extra challenge of low temperatures, but if you power through the workouts in -30°C weather, they give you a badge to prove how much of a warrior you truly are.

How to write your Experience Record for APEGA Application? FROM DREAM INTO BEAM MERVIN MENDOZA CERENO
APEGA look not only on the time spent on your experiences but on the quality of the experience you gained. The emphasis on their evaluation of your professional experience are outlines as follows:

Management The management skills must include: managing project resources, planning, scheduling, budgeting, and cost control, developing team skills and understanding professional and business ethics and keeping appropriate records. In different discipline, there are many ways on how the management aspect of engineering can be evaluated. These can be in the form of managing people, resources, equipment or even sensitive documents and files. The experience gained by the Engineer must show that he/she is aware of the significance of managing the resources as he/she is directly involved in implementing or designing the system.
1. Application of Theory The Engineer must show that at least 2 years of the minimum 4 years of experience the application of theory in their respective discipline. These includes solving problems and providing solutions, preparing and checking the designs, evidence of sound technical judgement and practices and demonstrated familiarity with the use and application of pertinent technologies, procedures, systems, and programs. The application of theory learned from the classroom must be visible base from the outcome of the study. The evidences that can show on how the theory were applied are the design products, documents,

Practical Experience The practical experience must include but not limited to being exposed to work-site operations, recognizing limitations in designs, interpretations or recommendations, and understanding the application of pertinent codes and regulations. Understanding the interdependence of disciplines, systems and activities, and developing working relationships among peers and subordinates. The practical experience must not focus on the routine work of the Engineer in the workplace. He must understand and has the opportunity to lead, direct or decide base on his engineering judgement.

ne of the requirements for your application in your professional recognition to APEGA is the Work Experience Record (WER). The WER is part of the membership application that is necessary to detail your engineering work experience. It is the record to describe your practical experience in your career and emphasize how the technical theories were applied in this work experience. Work experience gained before graduating from the Bachelor’s degree like on the job training, internship or co-op can be credited as the discretion of the Board of Examiner (BOE). Post-graduate degrees, that is Master of Science and Doctoral Degrees can also gain credit depends on the guidelines set by the BOE. In total, the work experience must be equivalent to at least 48 months of Engineering Work Experience. The Board of Examiner of
drawings and other tangible output can be interpreted as the outcome of the application of these theories.
4. Societal Implications Your experience must show evidence that you are familiar with safety as applied in the workplace, how engineering or geoscience benefits the public, the roles and responsibilities of regulatory agencies in your specific field of professional practice. In any discipline of engineering, safety is always at the forefront of practicing the profession. This must be clear and evaluated in all manners of a professional. In making decisions, designs and giving directions to subordinates – the Engineer must show a wide understanding of the outcome of his actions. 5. Communication Your communication skills must include writing technical reports and making presentations to management, peers, or the public. It must be clear in writing your WER that you are able to understand and convey your ideas to the general public not only to peers. You must have the knowledge to communicate languages that are understandable to everybody. This can be evaluated by being directly involve in writing technical communications among peers, giving clear instructions and followed by subordinates and easily understood by all. The 5 guidelines discussed above
must be present in writing your Work Experience Record (WER). These will be the basis of the technical evaluation by the BOE whether you have enough experiences to be called as Professional Engineer. An electronic form to write and input your work experience is available at the APEGA website (www.apega.ca). APEGA will soon introduce competency-based assessments (CBA) for engineering applicants wishing to become Professional Engineers or Licensees. Until CBA is in place, all applicants will continue using the Work Experience Record (WER). To help with this change, engineering applicants applying for a P.Eng. or Licensee licence can use a competency self-assessment worksheet (CSAW) to compare their competencies with APEGA's minimum requirements. This will help them determine whether they should continue their application or wait until CBA is implemented. For more information on completing the CSAW, visit the APEGA website instructions. Let Us Worship God!

Man is obligated to worship his Creator: "Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgments is come: and worship Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of water." Revelation 14:7 KJV "Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for
Thou hast created all things, and for Thy pleasure they are and were created." Revelation 4:11 KJV "Thou shalt worship the LORD Thy God, and Him only thou shalt serve." Matthew 4:10 KJV WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SERVING GOD AND WORSHIPING GOD? The Greek word for 'serve' in Matthew
4:10 (LATREUO) which means to serve religiously. For serving in general, DOULEUO is used. The word here for ‘worship’ (PROSKUNEO) means to express, by words or by bowing down, profound and submissive respect and adoration for God. The two activities, serving God and worshiping God, are complementary because worship is vain unless it is supported by a life of dedicated service to God. The apostle Paul writes: "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service (LATREIA)." Romans 12:1 KJV Also under the Old Covenant, worship was to be verified by a life of daily service to God: "And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all His ways, and to love Him, to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul." Deuteronomy 10:12 KJV The word here for ‘serve’ in the Septuagint Greek translation of the Old Testament is LATREUO. Serving God involves all that we do, walking in all His ways, both in the prescribed religious exercises and in a godly life, whereas worship (PROSKUNEO) is an expression of submissive adoration on specific occasions. PROSKUNEO in the New Testament can also refer to Old Testament worship and to false forms of worship. ONLY GOD MUST BE WORSHIPED. When the devil tempted the Lord Jesus to bow down and worship him, the Lord Jesus told him to go away, "For it is written, Thou shalt worship the LORD thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve" (Matthew 4:10; Luke 4:8).

Neither men, nor angels, nor anything created may be worshiped. Angels, however, are commanded to worship Christ which proves His deity. In the Gospels various people fell down at the feet of Jesus and worshiped Him. TRUE WORSHIP IS IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH. The Lord Jesus defined genuine worship when He spoke with the Samaritan woman: "But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship Him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and truth" (John 4:23, 24 KJV). A common error is to suppose that rituals have value, regardless of the attitude of the heart. The Lord Jesus teaches that worship is genuine only if it is in spirit and in truth. Both the inner and the outer aspects must be correct. WHAT IS WORSHIP? Worship (PROSKUNEO) is a conscious glorification of God flowing from an inner attitude of lowly submission to His authority and awe at His majesty. This glorification can be expressed by bowing down and by words. Since God can hear the thoughts of the heart, the words do not have to be audible. The gospel commands all people on earth to worship God: 6 "And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, 7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment is come: and worship Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of water." Revelation 14:6-7 KJV Majestic examples of worship are found in Revelation. We can learn how

to worship from the heavenly host! 8 "And the four beast had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. 9 And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to Him that sat on the throne, who liveth forever and ever, 10 The four and twenty elders fall down before Him that sat on the throne, and worship Him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, 11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for Thou hast created all things, and for Thy pleasure they are and were created." Revelation 4:8-11 KJV By falling down and casting their crowns before the throne, the elders show their submission. They "worship ... saying," and then follows a beautiful and majestic verbal expression of adoration. By definition, worship is directed to God, yet the glorification of God is magnified when words of adoration are heard by others. Next we hear the saints worshiping the Lamb in song: 9 "And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for Thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by Thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; 10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth." Giselle General came from the cold, mountainous region on the Benguet province, and immigrated to Canada as a teenager in 2007. She works at the Edmonton Community Legal Centre, which provides free legal help to low-income Edmontonians. She channels her creativity by writing in her personal blog, General Point of View, and has recently published a book of her poems and artwork titled The Humanity of Me.
W
hen I came to Canada at age 16, it is a period of my life where there are discoveries and huge transformations happening. It is a process of starting to navigate how it is like to think and act like a grown up. And with coming to a new country, it is also a process of exploring how it is like to adjust to the way of life here. On top of completing high school, reaching legal age, going to university, starting a job, there is the relationship aspect to deal with as well. This is both in friendships and especially romance. I certainly learned quickly the idiosyncrasies of dating in Canada. During family gatherings, older relatives would ask these three questions in a rapid-fire manner: ƑƑ So, Anak, do you have a boyfriend? ƑƑ Yes? Is he Filipino? ƑƑ Ay, why not Filipino? In taxis, cafes, and even the gyms, these questions come about as well. When it comes to my relatives, the questions about my relationship status is not surprising. Being curious and wanting updates is normal, if not expected. It is the questions and the reactions about the boyfriend’s ethnicity is what catches me off guard. Is there a memo I missed that evaluates a good romantic partner based on their ethnic background? It looks
like I also missed the memo that complete strangers will also react to this as well. And I most certainly missed the memo on how to argue to elders that someone’s race never mattered to me, but say it in a way that I still stay respectful. So, I don’t argue. I just laugh a little bit and the conversation switches to something else. Filipino women make such good wives? Filipino men are better simply because of sharing the same culture? I am honestly perplexed by those comments. I cannot say whether it is true or not, whether it is just a stereotype, because I know of people from all cultures that have done terrible things to their romantic partners. I have observed this from my own relatives and friends, to stories of acquaintances and clients at work. There are times when I chat with a fellow Filipino on the bus, and they would say that the ‘white women are all the same’ and warn their kids against dating them. I remember my uncle telling me ‘all men are only after one thing’. I think that these over-generalizations are quite harmful, because it discounts the individual personalities that can make a person unique. I have been with my significant other for seven years now. When we talk about relationships and our personal values, it has occurred to us that the fact that we grew up in
different parts of the world, makes our perspectives a bit different. I grew up in a small mining village, cared for by relatives because of my parents passing away early. He was born and raised here in Edmonton, with his parents still living in the family home, and he made it clear that he loves this city and wants to live here forever. We learned to not ever make assumptions when feeling misunderstood. Perhaps, and it is likely the case, that certain situations never became an issue for the other person. The best parts are the times

when we share similar viewpoints, or the satisfying moments when we have explained a whole different perspective to the other. There is certainly value to this one quote I read in the multiple articles I saw online. I wished I have seen it sooner, but we did it without being prompted. “Date the person, not the culture�. I really appreciate this a lot for many reasons. This gave us as a couple, the flexibility to conform, adjust, or even break the cultural norms that seem to be imposed upon us, and make adjustments that we are satisfied with. I felt that the fact that he did not always understand the

context of my life’s struggles, makes him a neutral sounding board, a comforting supporter, and the push to move on from them. I felt freed from the cultural stigma of discussing uncomfortable topics such as reproductive health, financial planning,religion and ethics. Everyone’s romantic journeys are different, and that is what makes it special. It is a different ball game, when complicating factors such as ethnicity, different family compositions and upbringings have shaped us in unique ways before we met each other. But I believe that we are worth it, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Re-Assuring Alberta-Canada’s Future Economy By Minister Sohi

ast month, the finance minister provided his fall update to Canadians on the state of the economy. The investments we’ve made in people, in communities and in the economy have put more money in the pockets of those who need it most, are creating more well-paying jobs, and are giving Canadians greater confidence in their future. Today, Canada has the fastest growing economy in the G7 and the federal debt-to-GDP ratio continues to steadily decline. Because of this strong economic growth, our government is re-investing in families and communities, and taking important next steps to ensure everyone can share in the success we achieve as a country. support for lower-income workers. We are enhancing the Working Income Tax Benefit which cuts taxes for eligible workers. This benefit helps low-income workers keep more of their hard-earned money from each pay cheque while encouraging others to join the workforce. We also know that Canada needs to attract the best and brightest to compete in the global economy. That’s why we recently announced that Canada will welcome a historic level of immigrants over the next three years, totaling more than one million people by the end of 2020. The majority of newcomers will be economic immigrants who will bring the specialized skills Canada needs to counter slowing labour force growth and an aging population. We know that recent immigrants are more likely to succeed when supported by family, so we will also increase the number of sponsored spouses, children, parents, grandparents and caregivers. These measured, gradual increases will spur innovation and represent a major investment into Canada’s prosperity, now and into the future. Both Alberta and Canada are on the right track. By making smart, targeted investments now, we can help ensure Albertans and all Canadians prosper for generations to come.

T
his world is a mix of people that can be compared to a large drum and bugle corps. The bigger the number of members, the harder it is to get everyone playing together, but the better music sounds they produce in the end. What makes a good member of the band? First, each person should do what he or she does best. A drummer should not attempt to play the trumpet when he/she is not assigned to do so. Musicians need confidence in both themselves and in the instruments they play. Above all, they must practice until they play their instruments better as they possibly can. Each member of the band has an important role to play. Remember, the entire
drum and bugle corps performs at its peak only when each member is playing his/her assigned part. They must get along as individuals to perform their best as a group. Now, think of the world, in particular, the Filipino Community as a huge band. There is great diversity between the different individuals, just as there is great diversity between the drum sets, xylophone, the horns, and the percussions in the band. Nevertheless, each section has an important part to play when each is allowed to play each part, the "performance" is a tremendous success. Do play the music as written by the composer and pay attention to the conductor. So as the entire citizenry or members of the group must abide with what the law dictates through the elected leaders.

n October 28, 2017 the vast majority of registered members of the United Conservative Party voted either through phone or online to choose their new leader. The pronouncement of the results was held at the BMO Centre in Calgary, Alberta with thousands of UCP members and supporters eagerly awaiting the results. Jason Kenney, as expected by many, led the results garnering 61.2% of the total votes. He was followed
by Brian Jean with 31.5% and trailed by Doug Schweitzer with 7.3% of the votes. With Jason Kenney at the helm, many are hoping that the UCP will steer the province of Alberta back to its economic advantage.

One to Ten “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten! Ready or not here I come!”. There are so many questions going through my mind on why I still love you. I did everything just to forget about you and move on, but I could not do it. One, I love you with all my heart that I do not even think
of myself anymore that I stopped the world, only for you. Two, loved no one else except you that hearts seem to be toys that would not want to share to others because it would only be shared to you. Three, we are like kids who are playing hide and seek that we do not know who is the “it”, and who is

We sat because you wanted me to listen to your lovely voice-filled with stories, whereby I am the only one who listen to you even though the world is talking yet we still hear each other. Hearts are chained but still trying hard to reach each other’s hands that are from opposite page. Ten, I love you but… you love someone else. I will fight for you with all my heart and I will stop the world for you. I will fight for you, just like how little kids play and fight for a toy. Moses Billacura was a sports correspondent for national newspapers in the Philippines since 1992 and served as sports editor and columnist for a community paper before moving to Canada in 2010. He is an Edmonton Oilers fan.

t brings a smile to our faces when we know of Filipino sports community leaders organizing leagues in this province for we know that they all come to Canada to work, work, work in the first place. Truth is, some don't even have the energy to do recreational sport because they are already dead tired working. Life in Canada, eh? One full-time job, another part-time job, some even have three jobs. But that's what a Filipino life is here and we just keep on going and going for the benefit of our families here and in the Philippines. Mark Laurente and Francis Rodriguez (not the Davao Eagles coach in the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association that we know) decided to organize friendly basketball games every Wednesday at the University of Alberta Hospital gym. "Katuwaan lang at exercise," said Laurente, who along with Rodriguez, was able to group together 20 Pinoy employees at the hospital in July to start the games. By August, their reversible uniforms were ready and now, they look like professional players. It was actually a Canadian who invented basketball and when the Philippines were under the Americans as a Commonwealth, basketball, baseball and other sports were introduced and became part of the physical education system. And because of the popularity of the sport, thanks to the influence of the NBA, the professional Philippine
Basketball Association was born in the 1970s and has since been followed by Filipinos. Laurente and Rodriguez came to Canada and brought with them the love of the sport. "Masaya kami kung nakakapaglaro ng basketball kasama nga mga "oldies". Ang importante sa amin, makapag exercise talaga," Laurente added. He said they don't have any plans yet to compete in Filipinoorganized tournaments in the city pointing out that they don't want to miss work. "Baka ma injured pa, may trabaho tayo," he said with a laugh. Recreational sport should always be encouraged for any sport can help us develop as a person and we become healthy citizens of this great country. Keep up the good work Mark and Francis! And special thanks to Mary Grace Perez for providing us information. *** In Edson, Rodel Gravides and his organizing team members Gheena Stelter, Joey Manalang, Jemar and Vei Matias and Christin Schalm successfully organized the Edson Inter-Town Volleyball League recently. Crosstown Auto Centre, Lakeview Inns and Suites Airport West, S&R and Tim Horton's Edson also backed the two-day event organized in cooperation with the Alberta Filipino Volleyball Club. Shaira Lina emerged as the most valuable player and Danica Rabago took the best spiker honors.
Team Maximo Cabrera of S&R topped the league after besting Crosstown Auto Centre while host Edson Spikers placed third, followed by Team Whitecourt at fourth place. Congratulations Rodel and the co-organizers! *** In Camrose, Jeff Micabalo, Romel Mamuad and Harold Arreza are leading the organizing team to hold another league this month. So far, eight teams have signed up for this season namely, Team Pilipinas of Jay Mendenilla, Bethany Group of Arreza, JCC Team of Jun Gonzales, Brgy.Ginebra Camrose of Randy, Team Elite of Fritz and Kris Punay, Wetaskiwin Ballers of Chris Mission, Leduc Ilocos and Ledu Hoopers. Good luck guys and enjoy! *** Allan Cadawas of Team TRIN recorded the most number of strikes with 11 in the ongoing Knights of Columbus Nazareno Bowling League in Edmonton. Cadawas set the pace in the individual division but it was the Team Underdogs that took the top spot after seven weeks of competition to lead the 16 squads entered in the fund-raising tournament. Deacon Gem Mella of Corpus Christi Parish led in the awarding of the individual honors to Cadawas. We will be posting updates in the next issue. St. Francis Xavier was a NavarreseBasque Roman Catholic missionary born in the Kingdom of Navarre on April 7, 1506. His father was a privy counselor and finance minister to King John III of Navarre. He was the youngest in his family and resided in a castle which still partially stands today and is in the possession of the Jesuit order.
As the young Francis grew, he was surrounded by war. Navarre was the target of a campaign by King Ferdinand of Aragon and Castile, and the kingdom was eventually conquered.
In 1530, Francis Xavier earned his master's degree, and went on to teach philosophy at the University of Paris.

Francis Xavier left for India in 1541, on his thirty-fifth birthday. As he departed he was informed that the pope appointed him to be the Papal Nuncio in the East. A Papal Nuncio is a diplomat who takes up permanent residence in another country to formally represent the Church there. He arrived in the region and colony of Goa, India on May 6, 1542. A major problem Francis quickly recognized was the nature of the people and their intentions. Many sailors and settlers were former prisoners who had been recruited from Portuguese jails or were fleeing mistakes they made back home. None of them came to spread or live virtuous lives. Instead they came to escape Portugal, find adventure, or to make fortunes. Still, they settled and made families. Xavier ministered first to the sick and the children. Then he learned about the native people of the Pearl Fishery Coast, which had been baptized a decade earlier, but were never taught their faith. Xavier began ministering to them. He spent three years among them, but was often embarrassed by the conduct of his Portuguese countrymen who were already Catholic, but frequently misbehaved. Xavier built 40 churches for the people of the Pearl Fishery Coast. Xavier encountered difficulty in his mission because he usually worked to convert the people first, instead of their leaders.
On August 15, 1534, Francis Xavier along with Peter Favre, and several other friends, made vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. The men planned to travel to the Holy Land to convert non-believers. Francis Xavier started his study of theology that same year and was ordained on June 24, 1537. Pope Paul III approved the formation of their order in 1540, which became The Society of Jesus. The order is more popularly became known as the Jesuits.
Xavier returned to Goa for about a year to attend to his official responsibilities, but he was very interested in visiting Japan. In 1549, he finally departed for the country, arriving in July of that year. Xavier was surprised to find that his poverty was a barrier to his communication. Poverty was not respected in feudal Japan as it was in Europe, so Xavier was compelled to change his strategy. On one occasion, when meeting with a local prince, Xavier arranged to be finely dressed and for his fellow missionaries to wait on him. He had gifts from India delivered to him. The charade had the desired effect and improved his reputation. Despite his efforts, the Japanese were not easily converted. Most held fast to their traditional Buddhist or Shinto beliefs. The Japanese also found the concept of hell as a place of eternal torment to be difficult to accept. Xavier's ship reached China in August, stopping at an island off the Chinese coast. From there, Xavier was on his own. He managed to find a man to agree to take him to China for a large fee, but while he was waiting for his boat to arrive became ill with a fever. Xavier died on December 3, 1552.
While Francis Xavier was becoming a priest, Portugal was colonizing India. The Portuguese settlers in India and elsewhere were losing their faith and Christian values. To restore these values, the King of Portugal asked the Pope to send missionaries to the region. Pope Paul III asked the new order to take the mission, particularly since they could not undertake their preferred mission to the Holy Land due to warfare there. Ignatius ultimately decided to send Francis. When the war stopped and Francis came of age, he was sent to study at Xavier eventually decided to travel to Malacca and the Maluku Islands to evangelize the people there. He the University of Paris. Official visit of Senator Tobias Enverga, Jr. in Edmonton By Jun Angeles
A
whirlwind one day official visit of Senator Tobias Enverga, Jr. and his wife Rosemer in Edmonton to attend the Filipino Senior Citizens of Alberta (FSCA) 35th Founding Anniversary on October 21, 2017 created a ripple of events for the Senator. From the airport, the Quezonian Club of Edmonton welcomed the Senator and his wife Rosemer headed by Jun Angeles, President of Congress of the Philippine Associations of Alberta and one of the founders of the Quezonian Club of Edmonton and his wife Hermie; Totie Mendoza, newly elected President of Quezonian Club with his wife Estrella; Lito Velasco, the Editorin-Chief of the Alberta Filipino Journal. The Senator and his wife were whisked to Fat Jakks Restaurant for a luncheon attended by the members of the Quezonian Club. Senator Enverga who hailed from Lucena City, the capital of Quezon Province, was delighted to see some of Quezonian friends and members who came from the towns of Lopez, Gumaca, Pagbilao, Sariaya, Alabat, and Candelaria to name a few. It was a joyful reunion with a lot of recollections. The Enverga family owns the Enverga University (previously named Luzonian Colleges) and a lot of Quezonian members studied at this institution. Being the first Filipino- Canadian to become member of the Senate of Canada in Ottawa. The Senate plays an important role in the operation of Canada's government. Any piece of government legislation must be approved by both the House of Commons and the Senate as well as the Canadian Monarch to become official law. Enverga is proud to represent the Filipinos/Canadians who are one of the largest sources of immigration in Canada and represent the Senate in the promulgation of law in Canada. After a brief visit with the Quezonians, the Senator attended the Meet and Greet with some business owners and entrepreneurs and an open forum to discuss the Small Business Owners proposed Liberal tax on passive income, income sprinkling and capital gains conversions with MP Kelly McCauley. The Panciteria de Manila open forum was attended by Consul-General Julius Torres, Atty. Joseph Angeles, Bayani Alcantara of Panciteria de Manila, Celso Andrade of Sunfreight Cargo, and Entrepreneur Kris Salumbides to name a few. The evening affair for the Senator was culminated as guest of the 35th Anniversary of FSCA and the Coronation of Madame Thelma Cerhit, FSCA Queen 2017.

I
had the privilege of seeing for the first time, the Sooner Band perform during the Ely Buendia concert last October. There was a little bit of hype around this band, when I was asked to have them included in the Filipino Fiesta. But they had previous engagements and plans just fell through. Seeing them perform cemented the fact that there is something distinct with the band, and I set out to learn more about it. Formed in 2015, the Sooner Band is composed of: Bob Sales - bass, who works as Shipper/ Receiver;Clint Nitoral - drummer, works with heavy equipment; Dexter
Jumantoc - saxophone, works at Superstore; Donnell Roxas vocalist, manager at Tim Hortons; Jay Mamaradlo, guitarist, works in a sanitation company; and Jimmy Basilan - keyboard, working as a Quality Controller. Why Sooner Band? They humorously revealed that in the early days of their organization, when members would inquire about timelines on plans, engagements and goals, the optimistic answer would always be “soon”. Since the christening of the band name, they’ve had regular stints at Panciteria de Manila, and engagements for front acts and private functions. Their

musical inclination ranges from RnB, pop and OPM (original Pilipino music), but are quick to state that they are willing to try any genre to challenge themselves. They do covers but put in their own twist. Not one performance is alike since they improvise on the fly. The performance of Sooner Band that I saw gave me the impression of a well-oiled machine, a sense of maturity amongst the members in their approach to music, and a confidence derived from a strong technical adeptness. Their music is clean, well-blended and allows each member their moment to shine. And so I was quite surprised to learn that they were all practically self-taught, going about their music instinctively and playing their individual instruments by ear. In fact, the evening I spent with the band in their practice location was full of revelations. For instance, Donnell came from a family of musicians but was such an introvert that he kept his singing a secret even from his family. Clint’s morning ritual includes a round of drum playing to set his day. And by the way, for someone who started with improvised drums and would join bands to be able to handle real drumsticks, his personal drum set is the most kick ass set I’ve ever seen! Dexter was a physical education and music teacher in the Philippines, played tribal instruments and the flute before he was introduced to the saxophone, has skills for magic, and dabbles in photography. Jimmy as a child took piano lessons to avoid household chores. Bob started as a vocalist prior to discovering the bass guitar, which he used to avoid military training in university. He has also done several original compositions. Jay has gained proficiency in the guitar through peer exposure and bonding, and continues to use his music as a way to develop and cement relationships, and as a stress reliever. Up close, the members of the band are respectively timid, unassuming and self-deprecating. They evidently change persona when they’re playing. But what is unmistakable is that they are collectively passionate, humble and cognizant of the hand of Divine providence in their lives. In the nature of the gypsy life of band members, they’ve hopped on and off different bands and now have gravitated together in their respective search for a band that they would connect with. They feel that their current composition is solid, share the same vision, has the right rapport, teamwork and trust that is essential in their collaborative process. Right now their music serves as an outlet, a way of bonding, and a means to make other people happy. But they dream for more regular stints, of dabbling in music out of their comfort zone, and performing and recording their own original songs. A crisis waiting to happen

n Tuesday November 7, a press conference was held in Panciteria, a Filipino restaurant in Stony Plain Road. There were three students who shared their experiences. It was attended by couple of media outlets as well as approximately twenty-five of their schoolmates. The press conference was focused on the issue of former temporary foreign workers that are currently on the student permit. According to Migrante, A Filipino Migrants’ Advocacy Organizatio, “Since 2014, and prior to the December 2016 changes in the immigration policy, many temporary foreign workers lost their work permit because of the 4 in-4 out rule and LMIA denials”. The organization in their background document said,“many of these workers went to seek help from Immigration agent and consultants. They were advised to become an international student to be able to stay. And many took on that advice and enrolled to private schools to extend their stay. And to access the Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)” A former temporary foreign worker who spoke at the event Jonah Falgui said, “My father had consulted one of his friends, an immigration consultant with regard to my status. She recommended that in order for me to stay in Canada I should get a Study Permit. She suggested Solomon College and JUST Solomon College.” Reading from her prepared speech she claimed, “That is where all the problem started. First month of school, rumors were starting about the eligibility of school for PGWP. On the first day of school, I spent almost $9000 with $2500 for books that are non-refundable. We could have bought it online where it is cheaper. I took a chance with the consultant recommendation just to have the opportunity to stay here”. Another speaker, Connie Monana, a former caregiver talks about how much she has to pay. “I spent over $16,000 and my employer help me with the funds because she wanted me to stay”. Monana was frustrated on how the school was not straightforward with them on the school’s eligibility for Post Graduate Work Permit Program.
“I am a good worker and I pay my taxes and contribute to Alberta. Now I don't know what will happen to us”, she added. In an emotional speech, Edeline Royo said “I gave full trust to my agent because I know that they are always updated with the laws of Canada”. “I am here and I want my stories and my classmates’ be heard that we are mislead by our agents and school. I don't want to be an illegal here that’s why I did what my agent told me. I only have seven moths to stay. I don't want to be back to zero. I don't want to fail my children to be with me here and dreaming of the bright future for us” In Migrante’s Facebook page, there were claims that students should have done due diligence in researching to find out about these schools. However these students were quick to reply. JomLabongray, one of the student leaders of the group said, “we are not stupid. We did our research. For one, the IRCC website is not easy to navigate. Our school have a DLI but it’s still not eligible, it was just later on that we found out that it's the Alberta government that accredit schools”. “And the other thing is, the reason that many of us hire an immigration consultant is precisely because we trust that they are professional in doing their job. That’s what were paying them thousands of dollars for” Labongray added. DLI is an accreditation by the Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for a school to become a Designated Learning Institute. That means that these schools are eligible to accept foreign students. However, it’s the Alberta Ministry of Advanced Education that lists the schools that can be part of the Post Graduate Work Permit Program. In an emailed statement to CBC, Samantha Power, from the ministry of Advanced Education said that "Eligible programs include degree, diploma, and certificate programs at publicly-funded post-secondary institutions, and Ministry-approved degree programs at private institutions," this makes the schools that the students go to not eligible. The future for these students is unclear. Jonah ended her speech saying, “Hopefully with what we are
doing today, the Government will look into our problem. I do believe that there is no problem a human being cannot solve if they give their all to it. That is what we are doing today- we are giving our all on this. This is our last card. I love this country. It has given me a lot of opportunities that I can’t get in the Philippines. Minister Ahmed Hussein said he wants to see 1 million new immigrants between 2018-2020. I would love to be a part of that. We are already here in Canada”.

A
Chinese philosopher, Sun Yat-sen, once said, "The key to success is action, and the essential in action is perseverance." This is definitely true in the case of the power-couple, Mr. and Mrs. Angeles, two (2) practicing lawyers in Alberta. While opposites attract and like repel, it seems that their shared goal of pursuing their passion was what motivate each other to succeed. The couple, Mrs. Katrina Angeles and Mr. Joseph Angeles, both obtained their Juris Dotor (law) degree in the prestigious Ateneo School of Law in the Philippines. Consequently, when they immigrated to Canada in 2006 and 2010, respectively, they challenged themselves to achieve accreditation to practice law in Canada and in 2014 were both Called to the Bar. Their career journey has never been a linear path. Joseph was deciding between two formidable career options to go into law or become a pilot. Through the influence of his father, a mechanical engineer in the Philippines who prompted his sons to pursue different fields, Joseph decided to pursue the path of the law while living vicariously his other dream through his brothers, one as an Assistant Solicitor General in the Philippines, the other a Lt. Colonel and Squad Commander of the 5051st Philippine Search and Rescue Group. On the other hand, ever since she was a young girl, Katrina had always dreamed of becoming a lawyer one day, inspired by the riveting crime and law books of Sydney Sheldon and John Grisham. However, just like the old adage, the dream doesn't last unless one works hard. As if obtaining a law degree was easy enough, the couple also encountered challenges in trying to practice law in Canada. On one hand, immigrating to Canada posed
challenges of resettlement and adapting into a different culture, a different landscape and a different language. More so, to practice Canadian law, they had to relearn and educate themselves on Canadian law, which, according to Joseph, was so different from the familial Philippine law. Now, having achieved their license to practice to practice, the reward for them is the ability to provide clients with sufficient information that leaves them settled and confident that someone has their back and being able to achieve that fine balance between work and family. So how did they manage the challenges they encountered as immigrants trying to obtain license to practice in Canada? Joseph cites that, "Constant communication with my spouse was important because it allowed me to concentrate on things that are of utmost importance and to focus on our family and our goals as professionals and parents." Katrina, on the other hand, echoes the same tune, "Joseph and I studied for our equivalency exams together so we supported each other throughout the process, but there was also a sense of competition which motivated both of us to finish." Both respond that ultimately, the mutual support was necessary to provide the encouragement they both needed to succeed. But more importantly, the mutual support enabled them to feel proud for each other. The couple states that to them the most important achievements in their lives are those that they share with their spouse. Joseph says, "I feel most proud of the achievements of my family especially my wife's achievements." And to Katrina, her pride rests on her husband and their daughters. She reminisces on her experience in taking the exams, " I remember being 6 months pregnant when I
took my last exam, it was certainly difficult studying for that exam but with enough focus, motivation and support from my family, I was able to finish it." In general, just like the quote states above, perseverance and hard work were key for the couple in supporting their family and achieve their goals together. For those wishing to practice law after immigrating in Canada, Joseph shares his philosophy, "Focus, life is hard as it is and when you add the pressure of relocating, speaking a different language, immersing yourself in a different culture, it becomes even harder, so my advice is to power through it and focus on your goals and concentrate on what is most important to you. The laws are very different in Canada and getting accredited as a lawyer here means
having to relearn new legislation without the convenience of learning it in a classroom. It will be very difficult and expensive but practicing law in Alberta is very rewarding and well worth all the challenges." On the other hand, those who wish to re-learn and re-educate themselves after having obtained degrees in the Philippines, Katrina shares the following advice, "Study hard and don't get discouraged. The road is long and there will be a lot of
challenges ahead but just keep your head down and continue working toward your goals." Ultimately, the success this power couple achieves was partly having pursued their careers despite the odds stacked against them. But, arguably, more so in putting their families and their future as a shared priority, knowing that with each other's support, there was nothing they could not achieve.

A Founder’s Message: Understanding Voluntas (Freewill) Triskelions, we are all good in rationalizing our "so-called" tradition without an iota of understanding of what we are rationalizing about. Do we even use our brains when we try to defend and justify this awful and shameful tradition called HAZING? The "scourge of the devil," that is giving the noble name of our beloved fraternity a despicable image and causing it to go down the drain. We need to do something drastic about this before each and every one of us become irrelevant and become outcasts in our society. A paradigm shift to change our stony hearts into contrite hearts is what needed to happen to each and every one of us. We cannot do it on our own volition because we have stony hearts. Let us, therefore, find a common ground where we can discuss this subject without being irrational. Our common ground is none other than "VOLUNTAS." What is Voluntas? It is FREEWILL
in English. Freewill is the power of acting without the constraint of necessity or fate; the ability to act at one's own discretion. Now, when we see the word "DISCRETION," we need to know that it is necessary before we proceed to understand VOLUNTAS. DISCRETION is a quality of wisdom that has respect for what is desirable and appropriate as contrasted with that which is opposite. Especially, it regards the feelings and circumstances of others who may see our actions or hear our words. Now, without DISCRETION it is impossible for us to fully understand the dynamics of how God molds and shapes our FREEWILL. Scripture is clear that God knows the future (Matthew 6:8; Psalm 139:1-4) and He has total sovereign control over all things (Colossians 1:16-17; Daniel 4:35). The Scripture further says that we must choose God or be eternally separated from Him. We are all held
responsible for our actions (Romans 3:19; 6:23; 9:19-21). How these facts work together is impossible for a finite mind to comprehend (Romans 11:33-36). Triskelions can take one of two extremes in regard to this question. Some emphasize the sovereignty of God to the point that human beings are little more than robots simply doing what they have been divinely programmed to do. And others will emphasize freewill to the point of God not having complete control and/or knowledge of all things. Neither of these positions is scriptural. The truth is that God does not violate our wills by choosing us and redeeming us. Rather, He changes our hearts so that our wills choose Him. “We love Him because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19), and “You did not choose me, but I chose you” (John 15:16). We all want what is in the best interest of our fraternity. Otherwise,
we will violate Capital "R" of our Code of Conduct which says: "Rise to defend the name and honor of our fraternity whenever it is unjustly criticized." Now some of us, at this point, are beginning to be uneasy with what you are hearing because you can’t imagine that what you went through in the past ought to go away. All you care about is your deep-seated bitterness that in order for you to find relevance is to pass on to others what you experienced in the hands of cruel and senseless beasts that believe hazing is just and noble to make a person worthy to be a TRISKELION. IF WE ARE TO DO AWAY WITH HAZING, WHAT ARE WE TO DO THEN? First, we are to trust in the Lord, knowing that He is in control
(Proverbs 3:5-6). God’s sovereignty is supposed to be a comfort to us, not an issue to be concerned about or debate over. Second, we are to live our lives making wise decisions in accordance with God’s Word (2 Timothy 3:16-17; James 1:5). There will be no excuses before God for why we chose to disobey Him. We will have no one to blame but ourselves for our sin. Last but not least, we are to worship the Lord, praising Him that He is so wonderful, infinite, powerful, full of grace and mercy— and sovereign. Amen. A Transforming Edmonton

W
hat makes a great city? Some of the best cities in the world consist of a flourishing central core, with easy to access year-round interior and exterior gathering spaces. In these cities, I always found a strong sense of culture and identity that stemmed from unique urban design and city planning. After travelling to some of these cities – New York, London, Barcelona and Vancouver – and experiencing the unique character of each city, then coming home to an Edmonton under construction and transformation, I can safely say that Edmonton has come a long way and is making an effort to make a name for itself. This past year Edmonton has undergone numerous changes, along with some great new additions. Some of these were: bike lanes, new LRT stops, an improved Jasper Avenue (Imagine Jasper Avenue Demo), Roger’s Place – along with the continuous construction of the Ice District, public art, weekend/evening markets, and Edmonton Design Week Festival – just to name a few. These great additions call for us to be active outside of our homes, to set aside our vehicles and perhaps try public transit, or maybe even spend an evening out at a park or strolling through a market. Even though it is still in the early stages, there is an active urban environment slowly being reborn in Edmonton. From page 14
The Sooner the Better - the Sooner Band Story upon knowing more about them, my conclusion is that they are really a bunch of nice guys who found some respite and zest in music, who despite a screaming audience when they perform, are modest enough to acknowledge that there is more to learn and achieve with their music. I view a lot of potential for this band, not only based on their individual talents and skills which are still, I believe, unharnessed at this point, but perhaps because of their authenticity to themselves and a love for what they do. This is perhaps what distinguishes them, that it comes from the heart, with no delusions of grandeur. I mentioned earlier the hype I encountered with this band, and now I know there is some credence to it. The Sooner Band provides good music by good people. This growth won’t happen over night, but anyone can see that within the next five to ten years, Edmonton will develop a new pace, energy, and way of living in the downtown core. For this to be successful, Edmontonians need to educate themselves on these changes and more importantly, be open to what is to come. We need to embrace the new bike lanes and appreciate its green outcome. We must participate in festivals and be active pedestrians in our outdoor gathering spaces. We must step outside of the comfort of our interior environments and This is an exciting time to show an example to the generations be living in Edmonton, and more before and after us. importantly, a great time to be a
part of this new chapter in the city’s history. Let us all be a part of this change and help create a unique
identity of a city that will make its residents and visitors want to stay.

Martin Nievera: A Voice For All Seasons By Jun Angeles

ack in the early years, twenty four years ago (circa 1993), an aspiring young singer by the name of Martin Nievera came to town along with his wife, Pop Fernandez; and action star, now a disgraced senator Bong Revilla performed in a concert sponsored by August & Thelma Productions along with Edsan Variety Store. It was one of the rare occasions where Filipinos gathered at the Shaw Conference Centre to be entertained by well known personalities direct from the Philippines. Martin came a couple more times and the last occasion was the summer of 2009 where Palabok House Productions brought back Martin with Gary
Valenciano in one of the tours known as "As 1.” It was another successful concert by Martin with Gary at the Mayfield Inn. Fans lined up at the Mayfield venue tor tickets. The concert was billed as one of the successful productions ever held in Edmonton. In a surprising turn of events, Martin was billed again for the fourth time, to perform at the "The Venue" of the River Cree Casino this late fall of October 29, 2017. In a matter of less than a month of notice, the Venue was almost sold out and where fans were scrambling where to buy for tickets. There were three occasions of "Meet and Greet,” the Summerside Restaurant, Fat Jackks Restaurant, and Max's Restaurant.
Martin Nievera is billed as Concert King of the Philippines and true to his name, the mere mention of his concert would have been driving fans to hear his melodic, solid and romantic ballad songs. His versatility could entertain the
crowd with Pop music, and even latest popular hits of 2017. He performed at the River Cree with his usual flare of humour and gusto. He brought his full back up band from Las Vegas to give him the fullness of music. Presently Martin

Nievera is a regular performer in Vegas and around the United States. He resides both in US and Philippines. The fans are looking forward to see him again in his fifth appearance in Edmonton. Martin is certainly most welcome entertainer/singer in Edmonton be it winter, spring, summer, or fall.

A Review: One Wild Night’s Dancing, Laughter, and Singing By Jun Angeles
As a media sponsor, the Alberta Filipino Journal is one medium where we can promote, advertise and contribute to the success of a show. This one particular extravaganza, One Wild Night,under the Palabok Promotions deserved accolades for bringing this group of talents to warm the hearts of FilipinoCanadians and Edmontonians. The show last Saturday, November 4th was composed of three big stars from the ABS-CBN Teleserye "Wildflower,” Maja Salvador, Joseph Marco, and Wendell Ramos; with the special participation of comedian Pooh, truly rocked the South Point Community Centre with dancing, laughter and singing. Maja Salvador, as well known for not only acting but singing and dancing had proven her prowess on both at the stage. The performance of Maja and Pooh’s dance competition had brought the house into thunderous laughter that surely was deafening to the ears of the Journal staff and audience. Joseph Marco, on the other hand,in
his dance performance deserved the recognition along with the back up local dancers headed by Manny Arban. If showing abs is a mortal sin, then Joseph Marco and Wendell Ramos deserved to be in hell. But ladies and some gentlemen approved unanimously that a peek of their torsos were
worth the price of the tickets they paid for. Some conservative ladies closed their eyes and mocked the show as obscene but vividly described what they have seen. (With their eyes closed?). Who will then go to hell? Wendell Ramos’ appearance was surprisingly unexpected. He had proven that he could truly act,
but singing and dancing was a surprise. Wendell, the hunk took off his shirt while rendering a song to the promoter Lydia Jimenez of Palabok House and what ensued was another deafening noise and wot from the crowd. From the Journal’s point of view this show is a five ***** stars.

The speaker stated that FSCA should be nominated for an award for what it does to enhance the lives, particularly the Filipino Seniors and the community through its weekly activities, occasional educational and cultural trips.
