he Philippine Consulate's Office for Alberta and Saskatchewan, headed by Consul General Julius Torres calls for a common celebration

of the Philippine Independence Day. On account of the said goal, Consul General Torres had initially conveyed his objective

through different Filipino organizations in both provinces. Series of meetings were set and attended. The third meeting was held last February 28, 2017 at his office in Calgary. The Filipino leaders had shown their full support to the Consul General's aspiration: "Let's just try to be simple. No spectacular presentations shall be expected from this picnic. This only aims to gather our kababayans in one place: magkita-kita, magkumustahan,

magkwentuhan, at magkakilakilala... Let's just demonstrate the spirit of togetherness. Thereby we can certainly earn due respect from the other races here in Canada, especially in Alberta and Saskatchewan... Let's show to Canada that we have the strength, that we can continue to become contributors of peace and goodwill to this Country... It is also our desire to groom good leaders who will become our voices in the political arena...." Consul General Torres said.

The Fourteen Stations of the Cross Stations of the Cross or the Way of the Cross, also known as Way of Sorrows or Via Crucis, refers to a series of images depicting Jesus Christ on the day of his crucifixion and accompanying prayers. The stations grew out of imitations of Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem which is believed to be the actual path Jesus walked to Mount Calvary. The object of the stations is to help the Christian faithful to make a spiritual pilgrimage through contemplation of the Passion of Christ.

hen President Donald J. Trump unveiled his proposal to increase military spending by $54 billion for next year during his address before a joint session of Congress, one of the things military planners thought about was: How does it compare to Russia’s or China’s military budgets? The U.S. is already spending a whopping $600 billion a year on her military. That’s more money than the next seven biggest defense spending combined, including Russia and China. Indeed, Trump’s proposed increase would be 80% of Russia’s entire military budget. That’s awesome! Describing his budget proposal as “a public safety and national security budget,” Trump would reduce the budgets for foreign aid and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by the same amount; thus, making no real increases to the overall national budget. But it would certainly make a lot of countries currently receiving aid from Uncle Sam unhappy. But what gains would an increase in military spending be for the U.S.? Isn’t the current level of spending enough to safeguard America? While it can be argued that the current U.S. military expenditures would suffice for now, there is no guarantee that

it would be in a few years. And for sure, the U.S. would lose her military advantage in 10 years if nothing were done to keep pace with Russia and China. There is a big “black hole” in the U.S. future defense planning, which makes her vulnerable to surprise enemy attacks, in particular, submarine attacks and hypersonic ballistic missiles. At the rate Russia and China are building stealth submarines capable of launching nucleartipped ballistic missiles, the U.S. might find her open to such attacks within a decade. Boomers Currently, the U.S.’s fleet of 14 ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) – known as “boomers” -is enough to counter any attack with devastating nuclear power. Each submarine carries 24 Trident missiles and each missile can carry up to 14 warheads. Together, the 14 Ohio-class subs carry approximately 50% of the total U.S. active inventory of strategic thermonuclear warheads. However, the fleet of aging Ohio-class nuclear submarines, would be headed for the graveyard in a decade and the new Columbiaclass replacement submarines wouldn’t be able to keep up with the planned decommissioning of the Ohio subs.

Trump’s awesome war budget The first Columbia-class submarine is scheduled to begin construction in 2021 and enter service in 2031 with a life span of 50 years. The question is: Would the U.S. be able to maintain her naval superiority in terms of quality to compensate for the anticipated decrease in submarine fleet size? Prompt Global Strike Trump’s defense planners must have thought about this potential problem. Playing catch-up with Russia and China, Pentagon’s think tank strategists are busy designing ways to counter the enemy’s attack plans, which would most likely happen as an all-out “first strike” nuclear assault. The U.S. is currently developing Prompt Global Strike (PGS), a system that can deliver a precision-guided conventional weapon airstrike anywhere in the world within one hour, in a similar manner to a nuclear Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM). Such a weapon would allow the U.S. to respond far more swiftly to rapidly emerging threats than is possible with conventional forces. A PGS system could also be useful during a nuclear conflict, potentially replacing the use of nuclear weapons against 30% of targets. The PGS program encompasses numerous established and emerging technologies, including conventional surface-launched missiles and air- and submarine-

launched hypersonic missiles, although no specific PGS system has yet been finalized. [Source: Wikipedia] What makes PGS dangerous is that war can be waged and won without the use of nuclear weapons; thus, sparing the world from nuclear holocaust. And since the U.S. is the only superpower that is far ahead in developing PGS, it makes the Russian and Chinese leaders nervous. And this makes PGS a more effective deterrent than MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction), which guarantees global nuclear annihilation. Trump’s proposed $54-billion defense budget augmentation would seem to fit into what PGS is supposed to achieve. The main thrust is in building a 350ship Navy, which increases the battle force of 272 warships in service today. However, this buildup doesn’t surpass what the U.S. had in 1998 when the Navy had 12 carriers, 30 cruisers, 53 destroyers, 40 frigates, and 70 nuclear submarines. In 2003, the Navy broke through the 300ship mark to it present size of 272 ships today, which includes 10 carriers, 22 cruisers, 62 destroyers, no frigates and 54 nuclear submarines. In 2011, the defense budget was cut by nearly $80 billion due to the sequester provisions of the Budget Control Act. Geopolitical playbook Having said that, one wonders

how does Trump’s awesome war budget fit into Uncle Sam’s geopolitical playbook? Would it enhance U.S. commitment to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)? Would it increase the viability of the rebalance strategy, which is to move 60% of America’s naval assets to the Indo-AsiaPacific region? Would the U.S. be able to assert her supremacy in the South China Sea and the Western Pacific waters? Would the U.S. be able to rein in North Korea and denuclearize the Korean Peninsula? There is a lot more questions to ask, but for now these are just for starters. And there are no answers yet. However, while Trump is busy concocting how he’s going to deal with Russia’s Vladimir Putin and China’s Xi Jinping, American special forces are busy operating under the radar doing what they do best: penetrate hostile territory. Meanwhile, the USS Carl Vinzon carrier strike group began patrolling in the South China, which is aimed at ensuring freedom of navigation and overflight in one of the busiest waterways. Based in Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan, the Carl Vinzon is part of the U.S. Seventh Fleet, which is responsible for patrolling the vast Indo-Asia-Pacific region. Indeed, with more than 150 bases in foreign countries around the world, there is no doubt in anybody’s mind that the U.S. would continue to exert her worldwide influence for a long time to come.

There are several paths that new immigrants can take in pursuance to their objectives about upgrading

professional credentials as the pre-requisite in gaining the Professional Recognition from the government as Engineers in Canada. Path 1 – Government and Non-government Organization that supports new immigrant. In Edmonton and in Calgary, the Bredin Institute for Learning (www.bredin.ca) helps new immigrant to direct a professional on their integration to Canadian market in many ways. They help through

career planning, education preparation, guidance in licensure recognition and even employment search. Edmonton Region Immigrant Employment Council (ERIEC) (www.eriec. ca) connects new immigrant to network of professionals through career mentoring and education and training. ERIEC facilitates Engineers’ and Technologists’ Integration Program (ETIP) for newcomers to upgrade their credentials. There are many organizations that supports new immigrant in going this path and it is worth to look and find those organizations. Path 2 – Formal Technical Training. Technical schools like Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) and other formal schooling are available in major Cities of Alberta that supports newcomer to gain Canadian Certificate of Education. Path 3 – University Level Formal Education. Universities like the University of Alberta, University of Calgary and University of

Lethbridge offers Graduate Level Program in all Engineering Disciples whether for Masters or Doctoral Degrees. The key for accepting to the Program is to contact the University or the professor on their research interest and/or their experiences to be accepted. The cost associated to University level education is not cheap, but again, the Government can support newcomer in this aspect. There are grants, stipend, bursaries and student loans available for those who want to go with this path. The Student Aid Alberta has it all (www.studentaid.alberta.ca). Path 4 – University of Alberta Faculty of Extension. Certificate programs in Construction Administration, Environmental Resource Management, Health and Safety are few of the programs that the School offered (www.ualberta.ca/extension/ continuing-education). These are programs that gain Diploma or Certificate and can be completed in less than a year for full time studies. Courses are offered on a weekends and

weeknights that can cater even while you work. The lists are just some of the options, but you cannot move up the stair without moving your foot on the first step. Upgrading the academic credential through a formal study is not a requirement fortunately professional licensing, but it will help the professional gain self confidence that he is holding a Certification gain in Canada to eventually integrate in the Canadian workforce. As we always say, for we have to learn how to swim, we have to get wet. We cannot be only spectator when other advances, we have to be part of the game.

he beauty of a jewel of gold would pierce a pig for decoration, but the writer of the Proverb was trying to make a point. The jewel of gold is not becoming to the pig. The grossness of the fat pig far outweighs the beauty of the jewelry. Now imagine a beautiful woman who has no self-control. The grossness of her conduct would far outweigh her beauty. That is the essence of the Proverb: "As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion" (Proverbs 11:22 KJV.) To God, this is a serious issue. Now to compare the

character of a Jewish woman to a pig was unheard of. It was a grave insult. However, it communicates an important lesson that women of today can learn from. The virtue of discretion, which is the beauty of a discreet woman, has many facets. A woman who is discreet in outward character is able to carry herself, wherever she goes, without fear. She conducts herself with wisdom, careful not to draw attention to herself. She knows how to avoid embarrassment. A woman with inward discretion is cautious in making her decisions. She is

careful to discern all the facts, taking heed to wise counsel before moving ahead. Today, some women feel the need to be seen. They are loud, aggressive, arrogant, and impulsive. They love to draw attention to themselves by trying to appear to have it all together. They are thoughtless in their speech, talking incessantly about whatever comes to mind. Their actions are based on whatever they feel or think at the moment. Their insecurity drives them to flaunt their outward appearance. They are oblivious to how their actions affect other people. They dress in such a way to draw attention to themselves. In contrast, godly women stand out from the women of the world. They are excellent examples of how God created a woman to be. A woman with discretion does not need to be the center of attention. Instead, she finds her security in her relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Rather than a pig with a jewel of gold through its snout, a woman with discretion is a like a rare gem that is quarried from deep within the earth, hidden for a time until discovered by those who recognize her true beauty and value.

arch is the International Women’s Month. Every year on March 8th around the world celebrates the International Women’s Day. Many in our community are not aware of this day nor they give importance to it. However we cannot deny the role of women in the history of people’s struggles all over the world. The history of the International Women’s Day goes back during the turn of the 19th century at the time of the industrial revolution. As new systems of production started to be discovered, women along with the workers at that time were also starting to organize themselves into associations, groupings and unions. March 8, 1857 when women showed collective mobilization from garment factories in Europe and The United States. Women waged massive protests against low wage, 12-hour workday, and extreme working conditions, child

labour as well as right to vote and join politics. To commemorate these contributions, the International Workers Associations declared March 8 as the global day for women or the International Women’s Day as recognized today. In the Philippines, the acknowledgement of the Women’s Month began in the worst of times: during the Martial Law years. In accordance with the United Nations, President Ferdinand Marcos signed Presidential Decree No. 633 on 7 January 1975. This created the National Commission on the Role of the Filipino Women. This evolved into what we now know as the Philippine Commission on Women or PCW. The Marcos ruling was the first in the Philippines that recognized the Filipina’s contribution and the need to promote equality between men and women. Its basic roles were to promote economic, social and

political empowerment of women and to review and implement laws regarding women. The first woman president was elected after the toppling of the dictatorship. Corazon Aquino was hailed as the people’s president, however the conditions of women have never changed through the years. Statistics have published that: - 1 in 5 women aged 15 to 49 have experience and will likely experience physical violence - 14.4% of married women experience physical abuse - 1 in 25 who have had sex, experienced force in their first sexual encounter - 19 women are beaten by their husbands everyday - Emotional violence is the most common spousal violence In the last 30 years migrant Filipinos leaving the country to work abroad have shifted from men to predominantly women. They became the breadwinners of the family. In Canada since mid-80s, it was Filipinas that came to Canada as domestic workers through Immigration Canada’s Foreign Domestic Movement Program. The largely Caribbean women participants of the program, they fought the exploitative immigration program. This was abolished and was transformed into the Live-in Caregiver Program in 1992. More and more Filipino women were recruited to work in Canadian middle class homes

taking care of the children, elderly and the sick. This was dubbed as the “feminization of migration”. As we recognize the significance of the role of Filipino women in our history and economy, more importantly

we must let the International Women’s Day and Women’s Month serves to remind us to act upon improving the conditions of our women today for the sake of our future and our children’s future.

IDENTITY: It is Every Existing Being’s Name By Lito Mendoza Velasco

espite resemblances, even identical twins have their own distinctive or unique identity. The metaphysical principles of “identity” and “contradiction” state: “What is is; what is not is not” and “a cannot be and not be at the same time and in the same respect.” For instance, a window cannot be open and close at the same time… You cannot be me at the same time. Identity therefore is not dictated by common sense but by objective reality. In the Name of the Father… In the Name of Love… Thousand connotations can be attributed to these two fragments. The former connotes the expressions of Praise or Honour, Highest Respect or conviction, loyalty or obedience, submission and seeking for Intervention. The latter has also mean almost synonymous implications with the former wherein the lovers or giver of love is expected to protect or defend his beloved. Lovers are

both willing to sacrifice and fight for the loved ones who are in any form of danger or lifethreatening situations. There is even the saying that testifies how love conquers: “You may touch my hair but never attempt to ruin my loved one’s name!” This is so in order to protect the good reputations. H o w e v e r, identity is the way that other people recognize you. Hence, there is no law that prohibits one from using one specific person’s name from refraining to use another’s legal name(e.g., Jose, Peter, Paul, Mary, Abel, Marco,Moses, Benjamen, Constantino, et al); except of course in the case of registering a business or Not for Profit Organization that would certainly require a Nuans Search procedures to avoid permitting two or more identities in one and the same nature of business or purpose of involvement (e.g., Alberta Filipino Journal, Congress of the Philippine Associations

Thus, you cannot find either of these business names with two or more different owners. Corporations Canada is very strict on this aspect. Name can either be inherited or stolen (by fraudulent misrepresentation or grabbing). For most cultures,

women are legally obliged to use their husbands’ family names when they get married, so as their supposed children. From that time on, all of them will be protecting each other’s name. As mentioned, name and identity can be fraudulently grabbed or used: This is called Identity Theft. On the one hand, the computer wizards can facilitate this silly thing by hacking your online files. On the other hand, your organization’s

name should have immediately been registered if you do not want other individuals have your existing group’s name registered ahead of you. Some are obviously doing this malpractice in order to paralyze your noble intentions and operations: This is called power grabbing. Be aware and beware of Identity Thieves and Power Grabbers or Trippers! Protect your Names and your Identity!

he modern women in today's society balances a career while raising their family. Ms. Ludivina Mana Juanillo is an excellent example of a modern day woman. Ms. Juanillo, arrived in Canada on March 1922 from the Philippines in hopes of acquiring a better future. Since then she completed a degree in Medical Office Assistant from Medical Reception College and now holds the title OTC Pharmacy Manager at Walmart-Albany. While balancing her career, she is also happily married to Mr. Dario Juanillo whom she raises her three beautiful children with. Apart from being a working mom, Ms. Juanillo cultivates her passion for singing. Her talent has led her to the CKER Singing Contest, where she won as the First Lady Champion award in 1992. Additionally, she uses her

talent to serve. Ms. Juanillo is a choir member for various churches and groups, including El Shaddai prayer group, Saint Charles' Parish Choir, Nazareno Family Choir, and an Alumna of Koro Filipino. Ms. Juanillo is not only brains, and talent, but also beauty. In 1994, she was crowned as Miss Courage during the Valentine's Day Celebration sponsored by the Philippine Bayanihan Association in Alberta. Despite her busy schedule, Ms. Juanillo is pursuing higher goals. While balancing her day job, she is also a regular program host and the producer of the Filipino Community Show called "Sariling Atin" that airs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6:00am, Tuesday 4:00pm and on Sundays at 6:00am / 5:30pm at Shaw TV Channel 10.

Canada celebrates Fraud Prevention Month for the month of March. Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and the Regulator for Immigration Consultants, Immigration, Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC) join the country in this celebration. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada warns the public of marriage fraud, document fraud, internet, email and telephone scams and most specially immigration fraud. Marriage Fraud Some foreign nationals believed that marrying a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident will be their ticket to obtain an immigrant status in Canada. It is a crime for a foreign national to marry a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident only to gain entry to Canada. There have been cases where sponsors and foreign nationals set up a "marriage of convenience". This is a marriage or "common-law" relationship whose sole purpose is to let the sponsored spouse or partner immigrate to Canada. If caught, both the Canadian citizen/permanent resident and the foreign national who are involved in a marriage of

convenience for immigration reasons maybe charged with a crime. Foreign nationals are advised not to get involved in a false marriage. IRCC will refuse your visa application and you will be ban from travelling to Canada for two years. This will stay in your immigration record forever. Document Fraud (Misrepresentation) In case you don't know, it is a serious crime to lie, or to send false information or documents, when you deal with Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). This is fraud and it is called "Misrepresentation". Misrepresentation arises when an applicant makes false statements, submits false information, submits false or altered documents, or withholds information relevant to their application to IRCC. This is a crime. documents can include: Passports and travel documents; visas; diplomas, degrees and apprenticeship or trade papers; birth, marriage, final divorce, annulment, separation or death certificates; and police certificates. Lying on an application or an interview with an Immigration Officer is also an offence under the Immigration

and Refugee Protection Act and the Citizenship Act. Misrepresentation bars a person from being granted Canadian citizenship for a period of five (5) years. If misrepresentation is found to have occurred after someone becomes a citizen, this can result in the revocation of their citizenship and this individual must wait ten years before they can be granted citizenship again. Internet, Email and Telephone Scams IRCC has received an increasing number of reports of a cross-Canada telephone scam regarding fraudulent telephone calls where the caller identifies as an Immigration Officer asking for additional personal information and or demand payment immediately to avoid deportation. In other cases, callers attempted to scare individuals by quoting laws the called person supposedly violated and threatened them with warrants for arrest, jail time, loss of immigration status and deportation if fine is not paid. IRCC warns the public that they WILL NEVER contact clients

over the telephone to collect fines to avoid deportation and they never asked payments to be made by purchasing pre-paid credit cards or through a private money transfer provider. IRCC encourage clients to pay the payment option as provided on their website. Anyone who receives this type of call should hung up immediately, contact their local police, and report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at telephone number 1-888-495-8501. Choose an Immigration or Citizenship Representative carefully If you plan to hire a representative in your immigration application here are few things you should remember: 1. Find out if your representative is authorized. IRCC has authorized the following governing bodies to represent immigrants or to give advice: - immigration consultants must be a member in good standing of the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council or ICCRC - Lawyers or notaries must be a member of a Canadian provincial or territorial law

society or the Chambre des notaires du Quebec - Paralegals (Ontario only) must be members of the Law Society of Upper Canada If you choose a compensated representative who isn't authorized, your application maybe returned to you or refused. 2. Ask about the representative's training and experience (Ask for references and find out how long they have been in business) 3. Discuss the services they'll provide and the fee. 4. Make sure to obtain a written contract and read it carefully before you sign it. Make sure the contract lists all the services the representative will give you and clearly states the fee as discussed. 5. Be careful of anything that sounds too good to be true. 6. read-through of Luisa Marshall’s write-up will leave anyone awestruck with her stunning success. What is more impressive, however, is the underneath driving factors of love, humility, strive for excellence that propels her to expand her boundaries. Luisa’s story starts with a childhood dream of being an actress, performing in various musical productions. Her singing has allowed her to travel to different countries and the decision to be a permanent resident in Canada in the early 1990s. She carries the immigrant story of sacrificing for the family, of homesickness and of the resolve to acquire and lead a better life. In all her trials and eventual successes, her philosophy is “ to live life, love life to the fullest. To be compassionate and have moral responsibility to help others. To give back to Canada and

to empower immigrants to be productive, to work hard and to follow their dream”. Luisa Marshall is a Renaissance woman - singer, TV host, producer, publisher, advocate, wife, mother (not in any order of importance). As a singer, Luisa performed with the popular Manila band Ambivalent Crowd. She then went on tour as lead vocalist for Hall of Fame throughout Asia, the Middle East and North America. It was in one of this tours that a random act of donning a Tina Turner wig while doing a cover of Proud Mary, that her entertaining circuit turned a cornerstone. With her strong vocals and a resemblance to Tina Turner, the tribute artist act became another vehicle for her talent. This was capped by garnering the Grand Prize at the World Rock n Roll Tribute Artist Championship in 2003. Highlights of her tribute artist

stint are guestings at the Ellen Degeneres show and Oprah Winfrey Show - performing in front of Cher and Tina Turner herself (!), and portraying the role of Tina Turner in the stage musical “TINA, A Rock n Roll Journey” in 2006. Based in Vancouver, Luisa hosts her own TV talk show Simply the Best, which is now on its 8th year, in the Shaw Multicultural Channel. Together with husband Steve Marshall, they publish the MetroVan Independent News. The TV show, the Tina Turner tribute shows and their newspaper are the platforms for her advocacies. Amidst these heady achievements and worldly accolades, Luisa retains a philosophical and humble disposition. In the bustle of all her activities, she strives to live in the moment, stay positive, and be grateful. To quote her, “ Once you have a grateful heart, you have a happy heart! “A promise”, a very meaningful word or phrase, even though it is such a simple word when you read it and look at it. A word that is so easy to say and to give but, it is so tough to bear. Seven letters are being united to form a meaningful word but, can you bet on its stake seven times? Can you make a promise seven times but once was broken? Can you ensure that this will be materialized and can be kept? “I promise, I will not leave you nor forsake you because I will always be by your side”. Is this

the kind of promise that will lead you to each other’s hands and presences. Believing in it is pretty straightforward, however, are you ready and prepared if ever it makes shed tears and wail in pain. That’s why we should be audacious and courageous if we will believe in a commitment and to a promise because we don’t know if it will be accomplished or be ceased. What does a promise do to make you a better person? It gives you hope and a light that your promises will be done. A

TORONTO, ONTARIO, March 08, 2017 – Fraud was once a simple concept. All a consumer had to worry about was being duped by a door to door salesman – now fraud has evolved into a billion dollar industry with the ultimate goal of stealing the identity and credit of unsuspecting Canadians. Fraud is big business and the majority of Canadians recognize this troubling new reality. A new survey by the Chartered Professional Accountants of

Canada revealed 75 per cent of Canadians are more concerned about fraud now than they were five years ago. And many Canadians are keeping fraud top of mind. A recent survey by TD Bank revealed 85 per cent of Canadians are worried about being a victim of fraud and 37 per cent expressed concerns their elderly relatives and kids may become victims of fraud too. The reality is fraudsters are more sophisticated with their approach now than ever before.

Now victims of fraud have way more to lose – their whole identity and way of life. The CPA survey also discovered: • Thirty-three per cent of respondents say they have been a victim of financial fraud • Seventeen per cent of Canadians have corresponded with someone who had lied about their true identity via social media or email • Fourteen per cent revealed someone hacked into one of their email accounts •Eight per cent confessed one of their social media accounts were hacked “I know many Canadians may be thinking, they can never be a victim of fraud however if you had an opportunity to speak to any of the victims of a fraudrelated crime – they would have said the same thing,” Jeffrey Schwartz, executive director, Consolidated Credit Counseling Services of Canada. “Fraud can happen to anyone at any time. The reality is fraudsters do not care who their victims are. This is why consumers have to be vigilant by protecting their identity, data and personal finances,” says Schwartz. Given fraudsters can strike at any time, Consolidated Credit Counseling Services of Canada recommend the following tips for fraud prevention month in an effort to help Canadians avoid from being a victim to any form of financial fraud:

Get a better lock Think of your password as the gate keeper to your life. So make it hard enough to foil the attempts of fraudsters to hack you. Consider making passwords with a combination of letters, numbers and special characters. Avoid using birthdays and easy passwords like: 12345678 or “password.” You can be extra secure by refraining from using the same password for all of your password protected accounts. If you use the same password for all of your accounts – that’s like giving opportunistic thieves a master key to your life – don’t do it. Lock your mobile devices If your password is the master key to your life, consider your mobile device as that extra key you keep in your garage or under your front door mat. If you leave it open to fraudsters – you’re creating another door way into your life which will leave you vulnerable to financial or identity fraud. The reality is many of us keep valuable information on our cell phones – anything from bank statements to our credit card information. So get in the habit of password protecting your phone. Your finances will thank you! When in doubt, back out Canadians love to shop online. If you love buying things online – it’s important to only use secure websites. If you think

The fastest way to catch any fraudulent activities to your credit is keeping an eye out by checking your credit history and activity. You can contact either Equifax or TransUnion for a free copy of your credit report. If you recognize any suspicious activities on your credit report – don’t ignore it hoping it will go away – contact your credit card company right away. He is an Edmonton Oilers fan.

Crosstown Auto Centre has continued its partnership with the Philippine Sport Association (PSA) in Edmonton as the 2017 Spring Basketball League gets going this month. Former PBA assistant coach Chester Tiongson, now product specialist for Crosstown Auto and in-charge in coordinating with the Filipino organizers, said that this is a commitment they had with PSA in 2014. "We are very happy with how they organized the leagues and a lot of Filipino teams have joined," said Tiongson. Tiongson recalled that PSA officials approached Crosstown Auto for sponsorship and the company president, Joe Medina, approved the support. The league is set to start on March 18 with 10 games scheduled at the Father Troy gym. Twenty-two years ago, the Philippine Sport Association(PSA) was formed to promote sportsmanship and camaraderie among Filipino-Edmontonians and Mariano Velasco, head custodian of the Mother Mary Margaret School, was first elected president. Velasco and the first batch of volunteers even paved the way for others to become part of an association that, as the years go by, has created a great venue for newcomers to belong and the merging of other Filipino basketball leagues. More improvements took place under the leaderships of Armando Marticias, Boy Torres, Ed Ruiz, Allan Angeles, Gary Perpetua and Joey Doctolero, the current president. Three years ago, Crosstown Auto Centre’s sponsorship boosted PSA’s standing in the community that saw the increase of participating teams to 30 squads. When PSA started, they had only six teams. Doctolero admitted that they cannot even accommodate the other teams that applied last year for participation but they are preparing for the next league to make sure they can join the PSA. Doctolero and the rest of the officers to witness what they’ve done, they give each others a firm handshake, a warm embrace and a pat on the back for a job well done.

Charge Laid Against the Driver of Edmonton's First Traffic Fatality of the Year By Marjorie Carmona Newman

Edmonton Police Service (EPS) in its report said that the driver has been charged in connection to the city's first traffic fatality in 2017. The driver of the truck has been identified as Gary Stokes, 47 years old. Stokes suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash and has been charged with speeding under the Traffic Safety Act. He is expected to appear in court on March 16, 2017. It was recalled that on Friday, Jan 20, 2017, police officers were called to a twovehicle collision after 3:10 pm in the area of 144 Avenue and Ebbers Boulevard. It was discovered that the first fatal vehicle accident of 2017 in Edmonton claimed the life of Oscar Manalo. Manalo and his family arrived in Canada a few years ago from Pampanga. Without any relatives to support, Manalo and his family made Edmonton their home, and established a new community of close friends. In an interview with Manalo's cousin, Stephanie Viaje she remembered Manalo as a selfless man ."He was so selfless, he took care of my boys and gave them a beautiful kobe jersey, and he loved basketball, and so does my son, so I will miss you kuya Jun and we love you." The 43 year old Manalo was turning east in his Toyota Corolla when an F-150 truck struck him. The truck careened off-road, and Manalo's car struck a pole. The report declares that alcohol, drugs and /or excessive speed were not factors in the accident. Manalo was declared dead on arrival. A viewing was held where family, friends and his church community gathered to celebrate life. “An enjoyable winter in Alberta, Canada.” A statement that many may believe as almost impossible. Alberta, along with many other Canadian provinces, are the perfect base for winter activities. Recently, many cities across the province have transformed their urban and outdoor environments into a space for visitors to desire and enjoy, all with the help of the “WinterCity Strategy” – a term and plan implemented by the City of Edmonton, to transform Edmonton into a World-Leading Winter City. Continuously from October to March, cities across the province provide various outdoor festivals for the public -- making the winter environment a pleasant, interactive space and destination for visitors. Some of these festivals are: Silver Skate Festival or Ice on Whyte in Edmonton, and the GLOW Downtown Winter Light Festival in Calgary. For the past two years, Edmonton has been the home to one of the famous LLC “Ice Castles” which only exhibits in four other American cities, making Edmonton the only one in Canada. The Victoria Park IceWay Skating Trail, provides visitors with a magical winter experience.

Additional to Victoria Park, most communities have an outdoor rink for residents to use – free of charge! And who doesn’t love free things? Similarly, most ski hills throughout the city will have a night or two each month, where admissions are free or reduced after a certain time. As long as there are enjoyable activities such as these to keep your mind off the weather conditions, you’ll be having a great time no matter what. Outside the city are national and provincial parks such as Jasper, Banff and their surrounding attractions. You don’t have to ski or snowboard to visit these beautiful areas in the winter, for there are other possibilities such as, skating on Lake Louise, numerous winter strolls through frozen waterfalls, or easy short day hikes through the mountains, or perhaps you want to try a go at ice climbing, cross country skiing, or snow shoeing – the list goes on! With great company, an enjoyable activity, and a base thermal to keep you warm alongside your favorite toque, it is definitely possible to have an enjoyable winter in Alberta.
