his year is special as it marks the 150th anniversary of Canada's confederation. In other words, it celebrates the decision of various provinces with diverse subcultures to come together in a United Canada. While the URDG WR GHÀQLQJ \HDUV RI Canadian identity was never smooth, this year we come to commemorate its failings as well as its victories. In Edmonton, one of the highlights of the celebration was the citizenship ceremony held at the Alberta Legislature to welcome new Canadians where they can recite the oath of citizenship to celebrate the rights and responsibilities we share as Canadians. 47 people received their Canadian FLWL]HQVKLS FHUWLÀFDWH FRPLQJ from 20 different countries and

twenty of those are Filipinos. The Escueta family in an interview said their family is proud to be Canadian citizens especially during the celebration of Canada's 150th birthday. Tony Santiago, a Filipino Canadian who was at Edmonton City Hall during Canada 150 said that: "I'm proud as a Canadian because Canada is a land of opportunity, a land of multi-culturalism, a land for people who can be want to be, Canadians are very proud, very polite and very kind people and that's what Canada is for me."

For Filipinos who immigrated, Canada has been a door to get through opportunities. For younger generations who have seen their parents strive to get a better future, Canada has a been a source of hopeful opportunity. Jasmine Dela Cruz a student said that "150th Canada anniversary as a country means a lot to me. Canada is such an accepting country, which accepted my great aunt who lived here for a long time and who recently passed away. It made me remind how grateful am I for being here. She sponsored all of my family. " And for those, Canada has been the middle ground between their identity as a Filipino growing up away from the Philippines. While the road to cultivating diversity as the Canadian identity has been marred throughout the years, it is the struggle, the means and not the end, that is worth the celebration.

What are the requirements in applying for the APEGA LICENSE?

s Engineers back home, we must satisfy certain requirements and prior experience gained elsewhere outside of Canada as either in Professional or Technician Level. The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientist of Alberta (APEGA) and The Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET) are two different governing organizations in Alberta. 19 June 2017 – The Philippine Consulate General in Calgary co-sponsored a Celebration Picnic in Wetaskiwin, Alberta to commemorate the 119th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence and the 150th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation. 7KH ÀUVW RI LWV NLQG HYHQW ZDV done in cooperation with the City of Wetaskiwin, the Wetaskiwin Filipino Community Foundation, and the Calgary-based Fiesta Filipino Council. It was an informal, feel-good event for the members of the Filipino communities of Alberta and Saskatchewan to meet one another to strengthen the community spirit among all Filipinos in those two provinces. Wetaskiwin was chosen as the venue due to its proximity to both Edmonton and Calgary, as well as the readiness of the City of Wetaskiwin and the Filipino community association in that city to host the event. The Fiesta Filipino Council of Calgary, meanwhile, volunteered time and talent in assisting Post to organize the picnic given their experience with the Fiesta Filipino event that they sponsor in Calgary annually. Consul General Julius D. Torres opened the formal part of the program by welcoming the community members in attendance at the picnic and thanked those who helped make the event a success. He called on Filipinos to be thankful for the hard-won liberty that provided the opportunities for education that allowed them to work and live in Canada. He also commended Canada for its tolerance and
acceptance, cherishing Filipino culture as part of the rich mosaic of Canadian society. Philippine Ambassador to Canada Petronila P. Garcia, who was the guest of honor at the event, welcomed the Filipino communities of Alberta and Saskatchewan at the picnic and informed them of the Philippine government’s policy thrusts. She also congratulated Canada its 150th Anniversary of Confederation, expressing gratitude for Canada’s longstanding policy of tolerance, acceptance and multiculturalism, and highlighted the contributions of Filipino Canadians to the continuing development of Canada, noting that the designer of the Canada 150 logo, Ariana Cuvin of Toronto, is of Filipino heritage. And so with this in mind, this is in a way, a paean to my fellow organizers, who simply loved to have a good party, rolled with a good idea and met the challenges head on and with composure. Teresa of Ă vila was born Teresa Ali Fatim Corella Sanchez de Capeda y Ahumada in Ă vila, Spain. Less than twenty years before Teresa was born in 1515, Columbus opened up the Western Hemisphere to European colonization. Two years after she was born, Luther started the Protestant Reformation. As a child, Teresa was obsessed with the martyrs and saints. One day, when she was seven, she convinced her brother to become a martyr . Her plan was to go to the Moors and ask to be decapitated!

To help Teresa remain holy, he sent her to the Augustinian nuns at Avila.
At the monastery, Teresa became extremely ill and experienced moments of religious ecstasy during her devotionals.
Teresa eventually founded a religious order; the Discalced Carmelites. Many Carmelite religious live cloistered of poverty and prayerful contemplation even today. As St. Teresa approached the end of her life, she expressed happiness that her hour has arrived. “My Lord, it is time to move on. Well then, may your will be done. O my Lord and my Spouse, the hour that I have longed for has come. It is time to meet one another." 6W 7HUHVD ZDV EHDWLĂ€HG DW April 24, 1614 and canonized on March 12, 1622. Following her death, her body was exhumed several times, each time smelling VZHHW IHHOLQJ Ă€UP DQG ZDV unspoiled. The Secret to Success: A Passion to Serve Ms. Loida Lumanlan came to Edmonton, Canada on October 1987. She arrived as an immigrant, reuniting with her family who came ahead 2 years before.
Like most immigrants in their early years, Ms. Lumanlan’s beginning was challenging in many ways. To start her career, she took as job as a chambermaid, cleaning up to
15 rooms a day. She says it was, “nothing like a Jennifer Lopez move,� but hard word on the back and hands made easier by a few dollars’ worth of tips. She moved on applying for a
waitressing job, but was instead hired as a kitchen preparation staff, washing and chopping potatoes and vegetables the whole day long. She recalls fondly a moment when she was promoted into bakery, where her ÀUVW WU\ DW EDNLQJ FKHHVHFDNHV ended with burning 9 of the cheesecakes. She remembers not raising enough money to pay for rent on time and asked an advance from a reluctant Kitchen Manager. At this moment, she felt the transition to this new life degrading and sad. It was challenging starting out, taking the bus to work in the morning, most days when the sun wasn’t out, and returning home past dark. However, she took joy over the little things, like taking her children to Safeway after work, relinquishing in the smell of apples and fruits, and getting nostalgic over the scent of ham that was usually served during Christmas time. Still, she persevered. In one of the Safeway visits, she asked the lady giving out samples how she got the job. She made an appointment and applied for the position, bringing in her resume that included her experience in customer service and various sales awards from her experience working as a Tang Promo Girl in Makati, Manila Philippines. This WLPH VKH ZDV FRQÀGHQW DQG during the interview she boldly offered to work for no pay in the case that the employers weren’t happy with her performance. This position gave her the jump to the rest of the career. Her repertoire includes doing food demos, samples, then subsequently being hired as a Cashier in IGA. To make ends meet, she kept 2 or 3 jobs. Throughout these trying times, she pressed on. She posted a goal in her bedroom on how many hours and dollars she had to make per day, per week, per month. She moved ranks, from cashier, to supervisor, to head cashier, eventually becoming Front End Manager when a new store opened in Sherwood Park until 1999. She didn’t stop there. While working full time, she studied marketing at NAIT. At that time, her children had also adjusted to the life in Canada and were doing well with their studies. Through her job in IGA, she met a Home Builder that introduced her to UHDO HVWDWH 6KH ZRUNHG ÀUVW DV a Sales Rep, then was recruited by a RE/MAX agent who used to shop at IGA. And now, Ms. Loida Lumanlan has 17 years as a realtor under the belt and still going.

While Ms. Lumanlan has a diverse experience, one thing was constant—her work involved dealing with the public. Her passion is in helping people and the intrinsic reward that comes with it. Throughout her life, she had been shaped for this work. Her mother taught her about business from an early age. When she was in elementary school in the Philippines, she sold corn on the cob and banana cue. On the other hand, her father, a well-known man in her barrio, taught her how to have interpersonal skills. These skills, along with her passion in serving the public, are put to good use in her work as a realtor. Her advice to those who want to be realtors is to prepare for long hours of working alone. On one hand, being a realtor means being your own boss, but on the other hand it also means being self-motivated and committing to a schedule to follow. She adds that one has to be prepared for rejection, even from friends and people they know. The secret to success, however, is to be honest, and look after the best interests of her clients. Additionally, continue to learn and improve. Find a mentor and be surrounded with successful people. Also, learn about different personality types DQG EH DEOH WR DGDSW $QG ÀQDOO\ give back to the community. On this note, despite her busy career, she joined the Women Support Group, Catholic Social Services and the WIN House were available. :KDW NHSW /RLGD Dà RDW throughout the trials is having great friends who had similar situations as she was in. Her struggles thriving in Canada were punctuated by road trips on the weekends, and sharing times of laughter and tears. Her perspective changed when she opened her network to having friends from different ethnic backgrounds. She recalls the time a Thai friend gave her a few cups of rice when they had nothing to eat, or the time her Canadian friends gave her old clothes, and even when her Chinese friend invited her to their church. She encourages parents to allow their children to mingle with people from various cultures. While it is important to maintain Filipino traditions, such as being respectful to elderly and being polite, in her experience, children ZLOO JDLQ PRUH FRQÀGHQFH DQG assertiveness, helping them to adjust to the Canadian life sooner. I would like to see speed limits of arterial roadways raised in areas that allow for it and lowered on residential roads from 50 to 40 km/h. I believe this will encourage more HIÀFLHQW GULYLQJ RQ RXU DUWHULDO roadways and discourage “ratrunning” (using residential roads as shortcuts) and unsafe driving within our neighbourhoods. This way our children can be safer in their home neighbourhoods and we can get to/from work more HIÀFLHQWO\ $XWRPDWHG 7UDIÀF Enforcement (ATE) or “photo radar” requires some minor changes to the procedures and mandated locations. Filipino Radio Enthusiasts of Edmonton Club (FREE-DX) has just successfully hosted the 24th International Grand Eyeball QSO 2017 held at the Diamond Grove RV Campground, Spruce Grove, Alberta on June 30, July 01, and July 02, 2017. The event was attended by various amateur (HAM) radio hobbyists coming from different organizations in North America and the Philippines. It is worthwhile noting that amateur radio is still popular among hobbyists for over a million people worldwide not only for fun, social, and educational
purposes but also sometimes a lifeline during times of need, especially for emergency communications, and is still relevant during disaster and relief assistance in times of calamities when landlines and cell phones are down. The guests were welcomed by the FREE-DX Group President, Carmel Restauro. On the grand day, July 01, which was also a celebration of Canada Day’s 150th anniversary of the confederation, the guests were entertained with a live band performed by the Jam For A Cause Society group headed
by Bernard Aller, and dance presentations from the FREEDX performers headed by Nida Juanillo and Danny Garcia. The guest of honor, Philippine Consul General Julius Torres, who could not attend due to SULRU RIÀFLDO IXQFWLRQ ZDV represented by Consul Eric Aquino who delivered a short message from ConGen Julius Torres, aside from the latter’s message printed in the event’s Souvenir Program. Messages of congratulations were also received from the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Canada’s Minister of Infrastructure and
Communities, and Mayor Stuart Houston, City of Spruce Grove Mayor, being the host city. The event’s guest speaker was Mr. Ernest C. Clintberg, Regional Director of Radio Amateur Canada (RAC) for Alberta, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. Also present was a special guest from Winnipeg, Mr. Yori Tsuji who offered his technical expertise on SWR and Loop Antenna including testing

Jane is one of the many students of an Edmonton post secondary private school that expects to access worker status through the PGWP or the Post Graduate Work Permit. Many foreign workers were covered under the four in, four out rule. That is, in 2011, former Conservative government imposed a policy where temporary foreign workers can only stay for four years and cannot return under the same program for another four years. When their work permit expired, many applied for a student permit to extend their stay. These workers are also hoping to work in Canada after graduation. To be able to do this they must apply for a work permit under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP). What is the PGWPP? Many international students who completed post-secondary education in Canada wish to stay and obtain Canadian work experience. Once they have completed their studies in an eligible program at an eligible Canadian post-secondary institution, international
students that are enrolled to this private school thought that their school was a recognized institution for PGWP. Its not. While the school is in IRCC’s Designate Learning Institution (DLI) list, it only means that the school can accept foreign students. It is the ministry of education in the province that provide credentials to these schools. And Jane’s school in particular do not have that credentials needed for PGWP. Jane and her classmates scramble to salvage what is left for them to do. It will be a GLIÀFXOW EDWWOH $QG LQ WKLV EDWWOH time is of big importance. Still the question that needed to be answered was, who takes the responsibility in letting the students know about the PGWP. Is it the student who should be asking information prior to enrolling or is it the agencies and immigration consultants that get paid thousands of dollars to make sure that they give that accurate and up-to-date information and advice. In the mean time Jane feels that she did not only lost $16,000 but she lost her dreams of staying in Canada with her family.

hat is Beauty? This is a very important question that every believer needs to have a personal answer. For me, a personal delight in God’s Holiness is the evidence of God’s active grace in a believer’s life. How that Holiness connects to Beauty, is one that I need to unveil to you. Let me begin by contrasting God’s natural attributes with His moral attributes. God’s natural attributes are His grandeur, strength, and power. It is entirely possible to stand amazed by these natural
attributes and yet remain unconverted. It is also possible that those who are wholly without grace, should have a clear sight, and a very great and affecting sense of God’s Greatness, His Mighty Power, and Awesome Majesty; for this is what the devils have ‌ yet they are perfectly destitute of any sense of delight of God’s Beauty. A sight of the Awesome Greatness of God, may overpower men’s strength, and be more than they can endure; but if the Moral Beauty of God
