The cover of this year’s ACCI Business & Community Directory was captured by Lex Porebski. ‘Maritime City’ was chosen by accommplished, Western Australian landscape photographer Christian Fletcher as the winning entry of the ‘Timeless Albany’ Photography Competition, run in association with the Albany Advertiser.
Christian stated...“I chose this image because it immediately stood out to me. The early morning light with the golden tones and stunning composition make this a winner. The photographer has captured a moment in time and has given us a glimpse of the timeless land unchanged for millennia, and how we interact with the land. The Silhouette of modern ships adds intrigue whilst the soft focus natural lighting creates a cinematic mood. Albany is known for its beautiful waterways, and what better way to show it than an amazing sunrise.”

Noongar Boodja covers a vast area of the southwest of Western Australia, stretching from Geraldton in the north, Esperance in the east, and down through Perth, Bunbury, Albany, and the Great Southern coast.
It encompasses 14 different language groups, and it’s one of the largest Aboriginal cultural blocs in Australia.

Region: https://www.noongar.org.au/
Kinjarling – meaning place of Rain – now known as Albany, was known by Aboriginal ancestors as an important meeting place, with abundant resources such as fresh water, seafood, and bush tucker. Bush tucker in Albany, or native foods traditionally used by the Menang Noongar people, reflects the incredible biodiversity of the Great Southern region of Western Australia. This coastal environment provides a rich variety of plants, animals, and marine life that have sustained Aboriginal communities for tens of thousands of years.
The Noongar people have lived on this land for over 45,000 years, with a deep spiritual connection to Country. Their culture is rich with:
•Dreaming stories (Nyitting)
•Seasonal knowledge – reflected in the Six Noongar Seasons: Bunuru (February-March), Djeran (May-April), Makuru (June-July), Djilba (August-September),
Kambarang (October-November) and Birak (December-January).
•Bush tucker and medicinal remedies
•Ceremony and songlines
•‘CaringforCountry’ practices which align with sustainable environmental management.
Immerse yourself in Noongar Culture
Aboriginal Australians are the world’s oldest continuing civilisation. The Menang people have lived in the Albany and the southern coastal region of Western Australia for at least 45,000 years, possibly much longer.
The local Noongar people witnessed the European settlement of the King George Sound area in 1826 and endured the massive changes this brought to their land and lifestyle.
Ever wondered why so many place names in Western Australia end in “up”? Gnowangerup, Kendenup, Nanarup, and so on.
In the Noongar language, “up” usually refers as “place of”. It is used to describe a place associated with a specific feature, plant, animal, or person.
So, for example the meaning for Nanarup is ‘place of the wildflowers’. Gnowangerup is ‘place where the mallee hen (gnow) nests’.
The next time you are out and about, try to find out the meaning behind the place name in the Noongar language.
Noongar Boodja refers to the traditional lands, culture, and heritage of the Noongar people, the Aboriginal people from the south-west corner of Western Australia.
Albany and its surrounding areas are rich in Aboriginal cultural heritage.
Many significant sites across the region are open to visitors, such as the ancient Fish Traps at Oyster Harbour; the lookout and ceremonial sites at Corndarup (also known as Mount Clarence); The Gap and Natural Bridge within Torndirrup National Park; Point Possession and Whaler’s Beach; and Lake Seppings, a sacred site known to the Menang people as Tjuirtgellong.

Traditionally, Noongar people hunted and gathered food according to six seasons. Determined by weather patterns, the seasons tell Noongar people which plants and animal resources are plentiful at a given time.

On 1 November 1914, the first convoy of Australian and New Zealand troops (known as the ANZACs) gathered in Albany, Western Australia, before leaving for Egypt and then Gallipoli, where they landed on the 25th of April 1915.
Albany was the chosen meeting point as it was an important coaling and watering port, offering adequate shelter for the large warships and vessels used to carry the many passengers and cargo.
Approximately 41,265 service personnel departed from Albany in the first and second convoys of the war, including around 186 nurses who were sent to care for the injured and ill. The first convoy is known to have carried about 8,000 horses, essential for cavalry units and logistical support. Tragically, for many of these ANZACs, their last glimpse of Australia was that of the hills of Albany fading into the distance.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.
The Ode of Remembrance, by Laurence Binyon, 1914

Today, Albany honours its ANZAC history with deep respect and national significance. The City commemorates its ANZAC legacy through the National Anzac Centre, annual ANZAC Day dawn services on Mount Clarence, and the iconic Desert Mounted Corps Memorial, to name a few.
Albany hosts one of the most significant ANZAC Day dawn services in the country, drawing thousands of visitors each year. The service is held at the Desert Mounted Corps Memorial, which stands on Mount Clarence and overlooks the very waters from where the first ANZACs sailed.
This iconic statue (pictured below) honours Australian and New Zealand soldiers who served in the Middle East during World War I. It stands as a solemn reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of those who served.

The National Anzac Centre
Opened in 2014 to mark the centenary of the ANZAC convoy departure, the National Anzac Centre is a world-class museum and interpretive centre located on Mount Adelaide. Overlooking King George Sound — where the first convoy of troops departed — the centre uses multimedia and personal stories to immerse visitors in the journey of the soldiers, nurses, and families impacted by the war. It’s become one of Australia’s leading war memorial attractions.
Albany Heritage Park
This park encompasses Mount Clarence, Mount Adelaide, the National Anzac Centre, and other historical trails and lookouts. It provides a full day’s experience for those wanting to walk the same land as the soldiers and gain a deeper understanding of Albany’s military history.

From York Street To The Western Front, the story of Major Eric Samuel Everett.

Eric Samuel Everett was born on 5 May 1895 in Adelaide, South Australia.
At the age of two, he and his family moved to Albany, Western Australia, where his parents opened a small grocery store, ‘Everetts’, on York Street.
Over time, the business expanded to include hardware, drapery, tearooms and confectioners, moving to Stirling Terrace in 1907/08.
Everett (Eric) excelled in school from a young age, winning competitions in music, performing arts, and sports. He was a keen swimmer and received a Bronze Medallion from the Royal Life Saving Society.
Everett worked in the family grocery shop before travelling to Perth to study and pursue a career in accountancy.
On 1 September 1915, Everett enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force. He embarked from Fremantle aboard the HMAT Shropshire (A9) on 31 March 1916 as a Second Lieutenant with the 28th Infantry Battalion.
His service during World War I was marked by bravery and leadership, earning him the Military Cross. He returned to Australia on 1 May 1919, to resume a civilian career, working in Perth. In 1924, he married Eveline Aspinall, and they had two sons.

In 1933–1934, Everett and his family relocated to Albany, residing on Grey Street while he managed the closure of Everett Limited due to the passing of his father.
After settling his family’s affairs, he returned to Perth to continue his professional career.
With the outbreak of World War II, he re-enlisted in August 1940, serving as Assistant Director of Supplies and Transport at Swan Barracks and achieving the rank of Major by January 1942. Major Everett died at his home on August 15, 1954.
His legacy is honoured in Albany, at the Albany Historical Society Museum where his contributions to both world wars and the community are remembered with pride.
Major Everett was awarded the Military Cross, the citation for which reads as follows:
“Lieutenant Eric Samuel Everett, 22nd Australian Machine Gun Company. The work of this officer both and out of the line has always reached a high standard of excellence. He did splendid work in several actions on the Somme, and particularly during a prolonged tour of duty in the line immediately in front of Bullecourt between the 19th and 20th April 1917.
His skilful handling of his section in a hot corner together with his cheerful courage and devotion to duty was throughout invaluable.’’

Projects have stretched as far afield as Port Hedland, Karratha, Carnarvon and Perth.
Established in 1967 by Jan Koster, the company started as a small workshop on Stead Road. In the 1970s, the business moved to Graham Street, driven by a vision to provide high-quality, custom steel solutions for the building industry.
Now led by John and Tanya Koster, the business has continued to grow while remaining committed to its origins.
As demand increased, Koster’s relocated to its current site on Negri Road in 2011, expanding operations with our custom-built workshop to better serve the region.

“Our qualified team brings years of expertise to the board to ensure Koster’s Steel Construction maintains its reputation for delivering the highest standards of quality and personalised professional service.”
John Koster, Owner
Today, the team consists of 14, including Riggers, Fabrication Engineers, Boilermakers, Stainless Steel Fabricators, In-house Shop Detail Drawers, Sales Staff, and Support Personnel.
Beyond its extensive product offerings, the business is actively engaged in the community, supporting apprenticeships, school work experience programs, and sponsoring significant local events, sports organisations, and community support initiatives, whilst proudly being a long-term corporate member of the Albany Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

& CREATIVE EVENTS THAT CHALLENGE, EXCITE, INSPIRE & ENGAGE

Presented by the Albany Chamber of Commerce & Industry, these Awards give recognition to businesses and individual businesspeople within the Great Southern region, encouraging excellence in business and celebrating the innovative persistence and entrepreneurial nature of our Great Southern community.
The Awards are coordinated annually, with nominations usually open in June, and winners being announced at a gala dinner celebration later in the year.
WITH THANKS TO OUR AWARD SPONSORS*

Each year the Awards receive nominations across a wide range of industry types, with approximately 21 business award finalists and 18 individual award finalists competing in their relevant categories. The overall ‘Great Southern Business of the Year’ is carefully selected by the judges, chosen from finalists in the Business Award categories only.

Categories include: Business Person of the Year, Business Start Up, Small and Medium to Large Business, Indigenous Organisation, Innovation in Business; to major and growth industry categories such as Tourism & Hospitality, Environment & Sustainability, and Agribusiness.
This program would not be possible without the support and commitment of our many Award Sponsors.
