COMMENTS FROM THE 2016 CHAIRMAN I am honored to be the 2016 chairman of the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Albany has been good to me; serving as your chamber chair allows me the opportunity give back to Albany by enhancing the business climate of our community. I am excited to be able to work closely with the 2016 executive committee and board of directors. This group of talented and dedicated professionals, along with our partners in the City of Albany, Dougherty County and the Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission, will continue to enhance the efforts of those that have worked so hard to make Albany and Dougherty County the ideal business location. Committees have always been a vital part of our chamber. This year we will see a resurgence of the Education Committee, which will place emphasis on a successful Commodore Conyers College and Career Academy, and on local and state education initiatives. The Legislative Affairs Committee has already started working and will be making our area’s voice heard at both the state and federal levels. Our Membership Committee and Small Business Resource Ed Newsome Committee are working on initiatives to better support our membership. Albany Air The new Ambassador program will enhance the chamber’s outreach into the community. Conditioning You will see more of these special volunteers, donning blue blazers and Ambassador name & Heating badges, at all chamber functions and around the community. Please think about becoming an Ambassador; it’s an excellent way to grow your professional network businesses. It’s not enough to say “thank you” Tommy Clark, the 2015 chair of the board, for his dedicated leadership to this organization. Tommy seamlessly led the chamber through a transition into the provisional leadership of Bárbara Rivera Holmes and the Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission. Tommy accomplished this while meeting all of the responsibilities that come with being chairman. I can’t leave out the staff of the Albany Area Chamber, which works tirelessly to ensure our business community has the best resources available. I am looking forward to building a stronger relationship with our businesses this year. We have a great opportunity to move Albany forward. I am asking for your involvement and input to make Albany a better place to live, work and educate our future leaders. 2015 Annual Report During 2015, the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce strengthened its message as the unifying voice of business in the Albany Area and as a key partner in improving the economic prosperity of our community. The chamber serves as a connecting dot on issues, programs and initiatives of importance to the Albany Area. The chamber hosted, participated and partnered on numerous events and initiatives throughout the year as it carried out its mission to support member businesses and the community. Here, some notable accomplishments of 2015. • Hosted the leadership and personnel of Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany and Headquarters Marine Corps Logistics Command during the Salty Sandbagger Golf Tournament, a friendly golf competition held twice a year between the base and the business community • Partnered with chamber members and Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital to provide welcome bags and hundreds of locally-donated items to doctors entering the Southwest Georgia Family Medicine Residency at Phoebe • Kicked off National Small Business Week and the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce Celebrate Small Business festivities with a joint proclamation by Albany Mayor Dorothy Hubbard and Dougherty County Commission Chairman Christopher S. Cohilas • Celebrated 11 small business finalists at the annual Small Business of the Year reception. Announced ComNet Technical Solutions (CTSI) as the 2015 Small Business of the Year • Supported the Albany Advocacy Resource Center, the chamber’s 2015 Non-Profit of the Year, through a donation from the proceeds of the Celebrate Small Business Raffle • The chamber’s Military Affairs Committee hosted the Annual Report 2016 | BUSINESS
annual Military Affairs Christmas social, a relationship-building event between base leadership and the chamber • Hosted a farewell reception for Major General Broadmeadow and Col. Don Davis, who departed leadership positions at Headquarters Marine Corps Logistics Command and Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, respectively • Celebrated exemplary students and their teachers at the annual STAR Student Teacher luncheon • Hosted more than 750 business and community leaders at five Rise N Shine breakfasts, focusing on Industry Awards, Military Appreciation, Partners in Excellence, Legislative Affairs and Strive 2 Thrive • Facilitated business-to-business and business-toconsumer relationships through 10 Business After Hours networking socials, with total attendance of 1,500 people throughout the year • Hosted 59 ribbon cuttings for member businesses and assisted with the groundbreaking of the city of Albany’s Fire Station No. 8. Chamber Ambassadors participated in all events. • Held 105th Annual Meeting, during which retiring board members were recognized, as well as the Lifetime Service Award recipient, the Ambassador of www.AlbanyGa.com
the Year and the Non-Profit of the Year • Provided business-related educational programming through Lunch and Learn events • Organized local leadership representation at the Georgia Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Dinner and Eggs & Issues Breakfast with Ga. Gov. Nathan Deal • Recognized and celebrated 44 members through the Star Business of the Week program • Increased Facebook audience to more than 2,350 fans • Promoted hundreds of member announcements through the Chamber Web site, www.albanyga.com, and featured the announcements in the biweekly e-newsletter. • Continued to be an investing partner in the AlbanyDougherty Economic Development Commission, which facilitates job creation and business investment in AlbanyDougherty County • Hosted Albany-Dougherty Day at the Georgia Capitol and participated in private meetings with key state leadership, including Ga. Gov. Nathan Deal • Advocated on behalf of the community and Marine Corps Logistics Base through the chamber-organized Washington, DC Fly-In, during which local leadership meets with the Georgia Congressional delegation and Marine Corps leadership at the Pentagon • Hosted the “Think Local” Business Expo, drawing a crowd of more than 500 to 50 member businesses showcasing their products and services. • Surveyed guests at the “Think Local” Business Expo to
gauge their thoughts on “thinking local” and offering input on ways the chamber can continue to enhance the Albany Area business climate. • With input from allies and the Legislative Affairs Committee, presented the 2016 Legislative Agenda, which advocates on behalf of issues, projects and initiatives of importance to the Albany Area. The chamber worked with state elected officials to promote the agenda • Recognized exemplary young professionals through the 40 under 40 Luncheon, hosted in partnership with The Albany Herald • Hosted the State of the Community Luncheon, a panel discussion with Albany Mayor Dorothy Hubbard, Dougherty County Commission Chairman Christopher S. Cohilas and Dougherty County School System Superintendent David Mosely • Hosted the Legislative Appreciation Luncheon to thank state elected officials for their support of the Albany Area and the chamber’s Legislative Agenda • Assisted with the Albany Convention & Visitors Bureau with the Red Carpet Tour • Graduated the inaugural class of the chamber’s Institute for Leadership Development and welcomed 17 participants into the 2015-2016 class • Hosted two “Get Plugged Into the Chamber” events • Assisted the city of Albany with the planning and execution of the opening of the Broad Avenue Memorial Bridge, which was held in conjunction with the Veterans Day Celebration

• Launched the “Think Local” initiative with 127 participating businesses. “Think Local” encourages consumer awareness when making purchasing decisions and promotes the economic benefits of shopping local first. • Welcomed more than 100 new members into the chamber family

• The Albany Area Chamber Foundation supported the Albany State University Marching Band’s participation in the 127th annual Tournament of Roses Parade in California, bringing international exposure to the university and to Albany.

Ed Newsome - 2016 Chairman of the Board Ed Newsome, 2016 chairman of the board, was born and raised in Albany. Ed went through the Dougherty County School System graduating from Albany High School in 1973. During his high school years he played football, tennis and was a competitive water skier. After graduating high school, Ed attended Georgia Southern graduating in 1977 with a bachelor of arts degree in business administration. Ed came back to Albany in 1977 to work at Albany Air Conditioning & Heating which his father founded in 1949. He acquired the family business in 1990. Ed has two grown children, Clint and Crista, who were born and raised in Albany. Clint is the third generation in the family business that now employees 65 people. Clint has two children. Crista is married and lives in Birmingham, Alabama. Ed was chairman of the board for the YMCA and Doublegate Country Club. He still serves on the YMCA board. He also serves on the board of Conditioned Air Association of Georgia (CAAG). Ed is married to Pam, a 35-year educator, who is now retired from the Dougherty County School System. Together they have three grandchildren. Albany Air Conditioning & Heating has been a member of the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce since 1970.

There’s Only One Albany
Business and community leaders packed the conference center at the Hilton Garden Inn to celebrate the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce’s 106th annual dinner. Bàrbara Rivera Holmes, interim president and CEO, opened the business portion of the dinner by sharing how servant leadership and collaboration between public and private entities have been the driving force behind the many successes the community has had this past year. Tommy Clark, 2015 chair of the board of the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce, thanked the business community for its support during his term and then turned the gavel over to Ed Newsome, 2016 chair of the Albany Area Chamber board. Ed, who was born and raised in Albany and owns Albany Air Conditioning and Heating, thanked the chamber for making it possible to give back to his community. As Ed’s first order of business, he announced the three major awards, starting with Ambassador of the Year that went to Peggy Haire. He then announced that Mission Change would be taking home the award for Nonprofit of the Year. Leland Burkart was the recipient of the Lifetime Service Award, the chamber’s most prestigious award. Matt Reed with the Albany CEO introduced the speaker for the evening, Sam A. Williams, a 17-year chamber veteran and the author of “The CEO as Urban Statesman.” Williams focused on how business leaders need to take an active role in the community in order to affect change.

Peggy Haire works for Marine Corps Logistics Command and was selected as the 2015 Ambassador of the Year because of her tireless volunteer service to the Albany Area Chamber. Peggy supported the Albany Area Chamber by working at major events, attending the most Star Business of the Week presentations, Business After Hours and Ribbon Cuttings. Her smiling face and enthusiasum made an impression on all those who were around her. Ambassadors function as an extension of the chamber staff. Peggy has been there throughout the year, showing up at events, greeting new members, working with staff and representing the chamber throughout the community.
Mission Change executive director and co-founder La Donna Urick accepted the 2015 Nonprofit of the Year award. Mission Change, a grass-roots, volunteer-driven organization, raises awareness and takes action on issues often overlooked. It serves the homeless community, senior citizens, under-served youth, special needs individuals and others. The heart of Mission Change is its monthly missions. Whether it's performing much needed maintenance on a shelter for women and children escaping abuse, packing boxes for the local Food Bank, or simply spending a Saturday with atrisk, inner-city kids, every month features an opportunity to affect positive change in the area.
Leland Burkart served his country and continues to serve his community. Leland served as a commissioned 2nd lieutenant in the army from 1957-1964. He was president of the Albany Rotary Club, chairman of the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce and still chairs the Military Affairs Committee. He has served the American Legion, the Reserve Officers Association, the American Red Cross, and the AlbanyDougherty Economic Development Commission. He is a member of the Southwest Georgia Alliance for Progress, and is one of the first to greet new military leadership into our community. He’s a man whose character, work ethic and generosity cannot be questioned.

The Council on Aging’s mission is to coordinate a system of services that promote the well-being and independence of older and disabled Georgians, helping them achieve healthy and selfsufficient lives. The YMCA is a Christianbased community service organization that provides vital youth, family and community wellness programs, and brings together people of all ages, races, and backgrounds. Strive2Thrive is engaging the commun
Strive2Thrive (S2T) introduced “Walk & Talk” wellness walks as a part of its health and wellness initiative. These walks are an opportunity for the community and S2T participants to walk, talk, network and exercise at the same time. A healthy lifestyle is essential to maintaining the overall well-being of the family.
“Art in the Garden” was a great experience for S2T youth. They painted masterpieces with local artist Femi Anderson of Renaissance Art Café’. In addition to painting, the youth sampled fresh zucchini and yellow squash while their parents worked in the S2T community garden.
Since 2010, Strive2Thrive has served over 300, men, women and children through its Phase I and Phase II programs. S2T has impacted the local workforce by an overall increase in participant employment of 56.5% over the life of the program. S2T currently serves 33 families (89 individuals). The 2015 statistics include: • 70% Gainfully employed • 71% Job retention after 6 months of employment • 98% Reside in safe and affordable housing • 78% Own reliable transportation • 91% High School Diploma or GED • 45% Enrolled in monitored monthly savings plans

Mrs. Rochelle Bush, a retired Dougherty County School System administrator, instructs the eight-week parenting class during Strive2Thrive weekly meetings. Organizations such as Albany Technical College’s National Technical Honor Society volunteer to serve meals at S2T weekly meetings. S2T partners with faith based orginizations, sororities, fraternities, civic and educational organizations to provide youth facilitators and volunteers. On Thursday evenings from September to May S2T serves a community meal and hosts training for families. Porterfield United Methodist Church serves as the facility host for the S2T weekly meetings. Over 1,300 volunteer hours were committed to the program in 2015.
Artesian City Sertoma Club generously donated funds for the development of the Strive2Thrive Southside Community Garden. The garden helps to alleviate a food dessert in a local southside neighborhood and strengthens community pride.

The first Business After Hours (BAH) for 2016 set the tone for the rest of the year. More than 100 members and guests enjoyed great networking, food and even some line dancing. The hosts for the BAH were the Hilton Garden Inn, UniFirst and Fox 31 WFXL. The Hilton Garden Inn, where the event took place, is a full service hotel with complimentary WiFi and on-site dining, plus a 13,000 sq. ft. conference center. UniFirst is one of North America's largest workwear and textile service companies, providing managed uniform, protective clothing, and custom corporate image apparel programs. They also have a hand in keeping businesses clean, safe, and healthy through their Facility Service Programs. Fox 31 WFXL is Southwest Georgia’s local Fox affiliate featuring the only local primetime newscast. Milan Dubravcic, with Atlantic Palet Exchange, was the winner of the chamber’s $100 drawing. 2015 CVB ANNUAL REPORT Albany CVB’s Gold Benchmark of Excellence accreditation was renewed for another 3 years by the Georgia Convention and Visitors Bureau and Columbus State Leadership Institute.

Albany Marathon press conference August 21st for the $25,000 check presentation to the Willson Hospice House and the unvailing of the new SNICKERS® branding starting 2016. This year will make the 10th Anniversary of the Marathon.
Hosted a Paula Deen Hometown tour for a Family Reunion Motorcoach April 18-19 The CVB delivered Munchkins to our partners/stakeholders for National Travel and Tourism Week May 4-10, 2015, thanking our partners for a great job boosting tourism in Albany and promoting jobs and economic impact to the City and County officials. The CVB hosted the Southeast Regional Race Series May 16-17, 2015. Albany’s Unchained Bike Race represented Georgia; we had over 500 registrations for the full weekend. Hosted the Travel Media Market Place State of Georgia FAM tour, we had 12 writers. The focus was culinary. We treated them to a progressive themed dinner complete with frog legs, quail, duck and alligator tails. Music Voyager Red Carpet event July 16th, State Tourism officials were in attendance Deputy Commissioner Kevin Langston, State Project Managers Chris Cannon and Amanda Peacock. Performances by Bo Henry and the Freedom Singers.
Albany CVB attended Georgia’s Governor’s Tourism Conference, Sept 1-3, where Rashelle Beasley was awarded the Larry Allen Tourism Leadership award for her leadership in the Tourism industry Albany CVB painted the town Blue and Gold decorating the streets with garland, bows, and banners for ASU Homecoming. Also, participated with ASU, City, County, and Chamber in the SGA Homecoming pep rally and kick off with the band and cheerleaders in attendance Monday Oct. 12. Hosted business after hours at ASU stadium with a tailgate theme to kick-off homecoming week Tuesday Oct. 13.
