COMMENTS FROM THE 2016 CHAIRMAN The Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission and the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce partnered to show our appreciation and showcase some of Albany’s outstanding industries at the 2016 Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission Industry Awards Rise N Shine Breakfast. The Albany-Dougherty EDC presented awards to Procter & Gamble for Excellence in Innovation; Mars Chocolate North America for Economic Impact; Pfizer for Global Commerce and Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany received the Only One Albany Award for Corporate & Community Citizenship. As the chair of the board of the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce, I want to thank these industries for choosing Albany as their home and for continuing to do business in our great city.

2016 ADEDC Industry Awards
The Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission honored existing industries Procter & Gamble, Mars Chocolate North America, Pfizer and Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany for their innovative business practices, economic impact, global exports, and corporate giving, respectively, at its 2016 ADEDC Industry Awards. "From creating jobs and making long-term investments to enhancing quality of life through volunteer service, our industries are the foundation of our local economy and our community,” said Justin Strickland, president of the Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission (ADEDC), which leads the initiatives that help local businesses grow and expand. “We are proud to work with and on behalf of Albany-Dougherty County’s existing industries, and to recognize their excellence.” The ADEDC Industry Awards are the highlight of Albany-Dougherty Industry Celebration Week, during which the ADEDC celebrates and promotes the impact of the community’s existing industries, which range from sectors including manufacturing, distribution, call centers and health care.
Excellence in Innovation Award: Procter & Gamble Recently, traffic news was on high alert about two giant contraptions making their way from the Port of Savannah to Albany. While taking a very conventional form of transportation along our state routes, the equipment was destined for a cutting-edge future as part of the $250 million biomass boiler being constructed at Albany’s Procter & Gamble site. Corporately, Procter & Gamble’s goal is to operate on 30 percent renewable energy by 2030. The company is at 7 percent. When the Albany boiler is functional next summer, 14 percent of P&G operations will be powered by renewable energy. “This is the biggest project for the company as a whole,” said Werhner Washington, plant manager at P&G, who noted that the project provides a certain amount of security for the local plant and its employees. Locally, the new boiler, which will produce steam, will increase Albany P&G’s renewable energy usage to nearly 70 percent. The plant also has water conservation initiatives. Its next-generation manufacturing lines – the most of these located at any of the plants – produce significantly more paper products than the traditional lines. “P&G is about innovation. Not just product innovation, but all innovation,” Washington said. 8

Economic Impact Award: Mars Chocolate North America In 2015, Mars Chocolate North America launched a new brand – the first by Mars in about 30 years – called goodnessknows. Mars could have made the investment at any of its 30 locations around the globe, and it chose Albany. Goodnessknows, a granola product made with nuts, dried fruit and dark chocolate, is made only in Albany and distributed nationally. “To actually have a brand-new brand, it says our plant is managing the products that it has well and it speaks to the fact that we have a lot of knowledge in making a granola product,” said Mack Phillips, site director at the Albany plant. Mars invested more than $10 million in the new line and created 20 new jobs. The product, Phillips said, is the top seller in its category at Target stores, and is doing quite well nationally. Six television commercials, national print ads and other media showcase the product. “When you’re sitting around with the family and you hear the laughter, it’s pretty fun to see people enjoying our commercials,” Phillips said. Mars has been manufacturing food products in Albany for 52 years.
Global Commerce Award: Pfizer Introduction to new markets, improved efficiencies and increasing demand for homeopathic treatment options have facilitated a 20 percent growth in global exports for Pfizer’s ThermaCare since 2013. ThermaCare is a heat wrap made only in Albany and distributed globally from Albany via the Port of Savannah. In 2015, the Albany plant produced 66.71 million heat wraps; of those, 54.2 percent were exported. “In the European market, a lot of consumers don’t want to take medication. There, taking a heat wrap to address pain is preferred,” said Tawana Reels, site leader at Pfizer Albany. So popular is the European market that a new ThermaCare wrap, made exclusively in Albany, will launch in Germany this fall. Also this year, the wraps will enter the Taiwanese and South African markets. ThermaCare is already in South America and the Middle East.

These are the three Cs of the United State Marine Corps; Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany is dedicated to all. Locally, its commitment to community cannot be questioned. From Mentors in Action to its stellar presence at the Snickers Marathon to its Independence Day Festival and the Buddy Fishing Tournament, MCLB Albany makes every effort to be a critical component of the fabric of life in Albany and Southwest Georgia. Base leadership and personnel go out into the community to serve and they also invite the community inside its gates. “No matter where our bases are located, we want to be connected and joined at the hip with our communities,” said Col. James C. Carroll, commanding officer of Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany. Marines, Sailors and civilian Marines log hundreds of hours annually giving back to the community. September 2016

Lunch & Learn Focuses on Cyber Security and Digital Success
“Common Cyber Security Myths,” presented by Dr. Greg Price with Hightide (a division of Taylor Chandler), headlined the Chamber’s second quarter Lunch & Learn. Most businesses have many ideas of what cyber security is; understanding what it isn’t was Dr. Price’s focus. Dr. Price is a 24-year veteran of the IT security industry and founded one of the first digital forensics laboratories in the United States.
Lizzie Cochrane with Total Merchant Services spoke on protecting your business from credit card fraud. Glennette Goodbread with Premium Web Development presented information on how to stop giving hackers the key to your website. Scalet Shuplat with Fox Fire Social concluded the program with information on social scammers and how to recognize dangers and protect your business while taking advantage of social media’s marketing opportunities.

New Residents Receive Wagons Full of Local Goodies
The Albany Area Chamber of Commerce helps welcome residents to Phoebe by contacting our members and asking for items that represent their businesses. Through our members’ generous donations, the Chamber has filled various receptacles, starting with doctor bags, then suitcases and now wagons. The goods and services that members graciously donate help make the incoming residents feel welcome to our area. The new doctors were introduced to the community during a ceremony at Phoebe, during which the Chamber gave them the “welcome wagons.” The Class of 2019 includes Drs. Stephen Daniel, Laura De Simone, Theresa Kowalski, Maria Kyriacou, Joseph Mariano and Serena Miller. The residents will train with Southwest Georgia Family Medicine Residency at Phoebe for three years to become eligible for board certification in family medicine.

40 Under Forty Recipients Recognized at Luncheon Young professionals were recognized at the annual 40 Under Forty Luncheon at The Bindery at Oakland Library for their exceptional contributions to Southwest Georgia. The honorees represented a variety of sectors, including educators, professionals in the financial and medical industries military personnel, as well as governmental employees. “We touched just about every corner of the market in terms of having representation,” said Albany Herald General Manager Ken Boler. “This is good because these are some of the game changers that are up and coming in their own right in the industry, as well as helping out in the community.” “This year’s 40 Under Forty recipients are doing things beyond the day-to-day work hours to make this a better place to live,” Chamber President and CEO Bàrbara Rivera Holmes said. “We have incredible professionals doing outstanding things in all sectors that impact our community.” Since 2008 the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce has partnered with The Albany Herald to host the 40 Under 40 Luncheon.

Welcome Center Manager Teresa Smith attended Ringgold Georgia on My Mind Day on July 15, handing out t-shirts and Albany information to visitors entering Georgia.
The Albany Convention & Visitors Bureau welcomed 15 meeting planners with gift bags and hosted an ice cream social June 11 for the Georgia Meeting Planners International FAM tour in partnership with the Hilton Garden Inn. CVB Director Rashelle Beasley was appointed to the Georgia Convention & Visitors Bureau executive board as vice president on June 6. The CVB hosted adventure travel writer Candy Cross June 13-15, focusing on Albany’s outdoor adventures. She and her boys went kayaking, mountain bike riding, biked the greenway trail and toured Radium Springs from the river and the gardens.
The June Forum of the Mayor’s Coalition for Economic Development was held at the Albany Welcome Center. The forum focused on the importance of tourism in Albany.

One doesn’t always link the former musical artist “Vanilla Ice” with progressive, educational processes, but, it seems that a line from his hit, “Ice, Ice, Baby,” has served both the Dougherty County School System and Chamber’s business community well: “Stop! Collaborate and listen…” That’s largely been the motivation that’s been driving some pretty impressive, behind-the-scenes work of the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce’s Education Committee. Led by Chair Chandu Kuntawala, the committee has worked hand-in-glove with the Dougherty County School System (DCSS), and some of the area’s top business leaders to create two impactful programs that ultimately will help change the business community’s perception of the system, while keeping relationships strong and communications flowing. Priority One is the name of the committee’s volunteer/mentor program that fits seamlessly with the DCSS existing volunteer program to address the needs of the schools, including private and parochial. The goal is simple: Pair business leaders with schools who have specific needs to better serve the students in Dougherty County. Using the existing infrastructure in place that supports the DCSS Partners in Excellence Program and Volunteer/Mentor Program, Priority One targets Chamber members who’d 0 30

like to get involved in helping students succeed by putting them in touch with the proper people in the DCSS to streamline the background check and volunteer application process. The hope, from the system’s perspective, is that local businesses can build relationships with their neighborhood schools and help each other thrive. The school gets the benefits of having more supportive hands-on-deck while the businesses increase their brand awareness and show customers that they’re interested not only in profit margins but building communities. The other part of the Education Committee’s platform is the Go See School Touring program. This program is designed to give business leaders behind-the-scenes tours of schools in Dougherty County so that they can better understand the innovation and creativity that’s going on inside the classrooms. A quick survey of alumni by the DCSS revealed that many who thought of themselves as engaged or knowledgeable about the state of their schools hadn’t darkened their alma
mater’s doors in years. The program aims to educate the business community about what schools are doing to get the next generation of workers, innovators and thinkers ready for a life outside the school and will include tours of Deerfield-Windsor and Sherwood Christian Academy. As with Priority One, the hope is that new relationships are forged between businesses and schools to the benefit of each. The DCSS and the private school community is hopeful that the Go See program will turn our business community into advocates for education, as they go out and talk about what they see inside our schools. But in order for both of these programs to work, the Chamber and the DCSS need forward-thinking businesses to step forward and lead the way. We need volunteers and mentors to commit to caring about our students’ futures and we need team players who are willing to carry an open mind into our buildings. Stay tuned, folks.
