Between the Wild & the Reserve
The Dama gazelle lives up to 12 years in the wild due to predators, drought, urbanization, illegal hunting, and other ecological threats In reserves and conservation facilities, it can live up to 19 years thanks to care and breeding programs

The Ghaf tree is a symbol of the UAE’s heritage, providing food, medicine, shade, fuel, and building materials Adapted to desert life, it lives over 100 years, grows up to 25 meters tall, and sends roots 30 meters underground in search of water
Mayed Alblooshi.. A Passion for Wildlife and a Human Message
Our colleague Mayed Helal Alblooshi, Curator Primates and Carnivores at the Life Sciences Department, has been passionate about wildlife since childhood He is known for patience, strong determination, and a sense of humor, with exceptional skill in handling wild animals, especially gorillas
Mayed joined the zoo in 2012, turning his childhood dream into a career dedicated to animal care and conservation
He recalls the most impactful moment in his career, the farewell of Lady the gorilla in 2016 after four decades at the zoo He says: “I spent four years with her, and it was one of the most difficult moments I have experienced ”
He adds: “Animals have a magical world that makes us reflect on ourselves honestly, and I invite everyone to discover its deep beauty, for not all beauty appears on the surface ”
