LAP OF LUXURY
TRAVEL SHOWS no signs of slowing down as global luxury travel network, Virtuoso, reveals the need-to-know trends shaping the travel industry for the remainder of the year.
After gathering insight from its network of travel advisors, partners and high networth clientele, Virtuoso announced the results at its annual Travel Week. The key take away from the series of surveys was that travel shows no signs of stopping despite the global economic challenges currently circulating the globe. Virtuoso reported a 69% increase in sales compared to 2019 numbers, with luxury hotels and cruises leading the charge, being up 173% and 122% respectively.
Luxury hotels in the US in particular have witnessed a 57% increase compared to 2019, while international hotels have increased by 58%.
As travelling abroad has received a huge uptick over the past year, Virtuoso reveals that the continued demand for exclusive-
use experiences and itineraries is here to stay. Experiences such as private aviation and yachting are big hits within the luxury market, and interest in these excursions is only set to increase. Tailor-made travel is high in demand, with 57% of travellers stating that creating travel experiences that best fit their expectations and needs is more important that the price.
The wellness sector is also thriving, with 94% of surveyed travellers incorporating self-care into their travel routines, as well as reporting a rising interest in creative programmes while holidaying. Iceland is leading the wellness destination charge, with Thailand following suit.
Looking ahead to the rest of the year, the hottest global destinations for autumn travel are the US, Italy, France and Mexico, while the US, Mexico, Costa Rica and Thailand are the big hitters for the festive season, indicating that the interest in winter sun holidays is set to continue its ascension.

DEMAND FOR Florida is high after Covid. Families lost a couple of years when they might have “done Florida” and are eager to get their kids out there while they’re young enough to appreciate the magic. My top Florida selling tip is to spend time with the client to understand what they want from their big-ticket holiday and steer them away from packing too much into their itinerary. Customers who haven’t been before don’t appreciate how huge the theme parks are or that the time difference will cause sleepiness in the evenings.
Initially, clients often only want a few days out of a 14night itinerary at Disney but once I have explained how much there is to see and do and that a longer visit offers better value they usually opt for at least seven nights at an on-site Disney hotel. My most popular itinerary is 10 nights at Disney, followed by four nights at Universal. I recommend clients book lead-in accommodation at Disney and higher-end at Universal, as the premium resorts come with Express passes, saving valuable queue time.
For clients who want to incorporate a beach stay, I book a day or two at the start/end of their itinerary. One client is doing a New York – Universal – Clearwater itinerary this summer, utilising the savings that flying via New York can bring. Tailor-making a holiday in this way means I am offering a client something they won’t find elsewhere.
I’m anticipating that the new Brightline train connections will inspire customers to fly into alternative, cheaper airports than Orlando and twin the theme parks with other parts of Florida or with a cruise.
I’m always transparent with clients and prioritise getting the best holiday for them over closing a sale. I monitor for promotions and will delay booking their trip if I believe a special offer is about to be released that would benefit them.

What makes AlUla stand out as such an incredible and burgeoning destination?
AlUla is really built around four pillars: heritage, natural attractions, adventure, and arts & culture. Experiences and travel styles trickle down from that: the heritage marvels and landscapes lend themselves to wellness experiences, immersive walking and hiking tails with a luxury accommodation offering.
How are your existing trade partners selling these incredible experiences?
What we've found working with the trade so far is that AlUla is sold very easily as part of a wider Saudi experience, alongside Jeddah and Riyadh. It's becoming more successful as an add-on package to the UAE. That makes total sense to me; clients can do their fly-and-flop, spend time on the beach and time in the shops in the UAE, and then have three or four days of incredible
culture and an entirely different set of experiences in AlUla.
It's very easy for the trade to service, particularly with the codeshare with Emirates and flydubai directly into AlUla. We're hoping to welcome Royal Jordanian on board this autumn, directly out of Amman.
How can trade partners break down the preconceptions that p people off Saudi holidays?
It’s a really important point to make: it’s not just important to talk about what there is to see and do in the destination, but to ensure anyone who visits will be welcomed. special about AlUla is the people. AlUla was was historically a stop on the Incense Route because of its abundance of food and water; it's been hospitable to travellers from all walks of life for millennia. Saudi is modernising fast and
is much less conservative than you might expect. Of course it is still advised that wherever you travel you respect local customs, but the locals in AlUla welcome all their international travellers with open arms. Ladies do not have to wear a headscarf and can wear t-shirts and knee length shorts. Men and women are not segregated so both can relax around the hotel swimming pool, and ladies can wear swimsuits, even bikinis are seen! Any couples can also book and share a room.
How can agents get involved and kickstart their selling?
The key thing that we want to get the industry involved with is our trade training programme, AlUla Specialist. This is a trade hub that provides a place to discover, keep updated and sell AlUla effectively.
The Royal Commission for AlUla’s UK director sat down with Travel Bulletin’s Matt Hayhoe to showcase the destination, dispel misconceptions, and invite the trade to keep up with a destination rapidly evolving into a Middle Eastern mainstay.

Ski Beat leans into best practice
SKI BEAT has demonstrated the way it applies the principals of Lean, the lynchpin of Japanese manufacturing that streamlines efficiency and enhances customer experience, in an exclusive ‘Lean in Europe’ event hosted in the French Alps.
Ski Beat’s Laura Hazell said: “Lean centres around minimising waste of time and resources, to streamline the business to function as productively as possible and enhance customer satisfaction. We have applied these principles for the past eight years, and one of the most tangible results has been seeing our return business soar, with 96% of our clients saying they would travel with us again.
“During an intense, two-day event, we gave delegates a unique `behind the scenes’ look at how we operate, as well as an opportunity to experience our ski chalet offer, to demonstrate how approaches developed by the manufacturing industry can be adapted to the travel industry”

RIVIERA’S EXCLUSIVE OCEAN OFFERING
Riviera and Celestyal join forces to launch an exclusive Grecian cruise-and-stay offering.
IN AN exclusive interview with Travel Bulletin, Tom Morgan, Riviera Travel’s UK head of trade, announced a brand new 10-night ‘Athens & Greek Islands’ cruise and stay itinerary in partnership with Celestyal Cruises.
The itinerary blends a seven-night sailing aboard Celestyal Journey with luxury hotel stays in Athens pre- and post-cruise, giving guests ample opportunities to experience the very best the ancient region has to offer.
“We really wanted to expand into ocean cruising. We see a lot of synergy with Riviera’s products and customers wanting ocean cruise options, and wanted to pick an option that fits in quite well alongside our river cruises,” Tom explained.
The one- and two-night Athens stays blend five-star accommodation with tours of the Acropolis, Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon, offering guests the classic Greece experience, before they head aboard Celestyal Journey to explore the myriad of Greek islands.
Tom continued: “We've chosen places that give guests the real Greece experience, but create it in a way where it's not easy to package these things themselves. That's where our expertise comes in with the pre- and post-cruise stays and choosing excursions that are really worth it."
Five departures are available to book now for the ‘Athens & Greek Islands’ itinerary, but this may not be the end of the road for the partnership.
