BLOSSOM MUSIC CENTER MARKS OUR MEMORIES.
As we focus on the history of Blossom Music Center this month, I find myself thinking about the role it has played in my life. Blossom isn’t just a venue. For a lot of us in Northeast Ohio, it’s a marker of time. You remember who you were based on who you saw there, who you went with and where you sat.
I’ve been to a lot of concerts over the years, from Lollapalooza to Bob Dylan and everything in between. Some of those shows blur together now, but the feeling of being there doesn’t. Music anchors memories in a way few other things can.
When I was younger, I always went for the cheap seats. Lawn tickets were the move. It didn’t matter if it was hot, raining or somewhere in between. You brought a blanket and figured it out. There was something great about sitting out on the lawn with thousands of other people, all there for the same reason. You weren’t there for comfort. You were there for the experience.
As I’ve gotten older, my preferences have changed. These days, I’m much more likely to sit in the pavilion. I appreciate having an actual seat and knowing I won’t be sliding down a wet hill halfway through the show. That probably says more about my knees than my taste in music, but I’m OK with that. The music hits the same — just with a little less effort.
Blossom has always been one of those places that adapts to you as you move through life. You can experience it one way in your 20s and an entirely
different way years later. Both feel right. That’s part of what makes it special.
I’ve seen the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom once, and even that single night stands out. Sitting there as the sun went down, listening to music that’s been around for centuries, reminded me how fortunate we are to have a venue like that in our backyard. It’s the kind of experience you don’t fully appreciate until you stop and think about how rare it really is.
Blossom is part of a larger story of music venues in Northeast Ohio, including some that are gone but not forgotten. Places like Cleveland Municipal Stadium and Richfield Coliseum shaped my childhood and teenage years. Those weren’t just buildings. They were where memories were made, where you saw your first big concert and where the crowd felt massive.
Looking back, those concerts helped shape who I am more than I probably realized at the time. They were nights out with friends, first shows, last-minute ticket buys and long drives home afterward. They were moments when life paused for a few hours and everything narrowed down to the music in front of you.
Blossom has been part of that story for generations now. It has evolved, but it hasn’t lost what makes it special. As we look at its history in this issue, I’m reminded that places like Blossom don’t just host concerts. They become part of our lives.

There is a certain excitement about going to a concert at Blossom Music Center. The walk from the parking lot is long, but to me, it just builds anticipation. Seeing all the fans dressed up and rushing to the show is fun. By the time you’ve completed your trek and gotten through the security and ticket gates, you’ve earned an ice-cold drink and a chance to lounge on a blanket on the lawn.
I try to go to Blossom at least once every summer — Blossom is summer to me. Swaying in the open air and singing your favorite tunes along with 19,000-some people is electric. I love to stop, look up at the stars and just soak in the majesty of such a rich summer moment.
On pg. 16, this issue shares the history of Blossom and its creation as the summer home of the Cleveland Orchestra. We cover the on-site Porthouse Theatre and the epic history of rock concerts through the lenses of acclaimed photographers such as Janet Macoska and the perspective of iconic musicians such as Joe Vitale of Crosby, Stills & Nash. It’s The 330’s most legendary enduring music venue. Its concerts are an unparalleled experience.
My first time seeing the orchestra play at Blossom was in 2023 for “Jurassic Park” in concert with my husband, Tony. I was excited to have a picnic at Blossom for the first time. I packed cheeses, crackers, veggies, dip, chicken and wine. It was so cinematic to see “Jurassic Park” on the big screen and hear its iconic score being played. In 2024, we saw “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in concert. It was breathtaking. Not only did the orchestra play the magnificent score, but the chorus sang along in Elvish — elevating the experience even more. Plus, tons of people dressed up, adding to the enjoyment.
“It’s a fun atmosphere … seeing people bring elaborate picnics, parking out on the lawn or coming in to hear a concert in the pavilion. All of that created a really memorable experience,” says Cleveland Orchestra second clarinet Robert Woolfrey. “It’s the feeling that it was an event and not just a concert.”
The 2024 John Legend orchestra concert was memorable because, after a few outstanding songs together, we had to evacuate the concert area due to heavy rain and a lightning storm. After sheltering

on-site, it was canceled and everyone was sent home. That ended up being a good thing because it became a flash flood that flooded nearby areas, including Merriman Valley, where Akron Life’s offices are located. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine declared a state of emergency in eight counties, including Summit. Legend came back without the orchestra — and brought some family members from his Ohio roots, which was a nice surprise. Of course, it rained again — but thankfully, only lightly.
I’ve also seen John Mayer, Sum 41, Goo Goo Dolls, Train, Jason Mraz, Jonas Brothers, Maroon 5 and more. The Weezer concert was so memorable because the crowd, filled with kids and families, was so lively, passing around beach balls. It’s such a breezy, carefree environment. The Backstreet Boys were incredible, and I nearly lost my voice because I sang so much. I’m a ‘90s kid at heart. I love that there’s plenty of space to dance!
What are your favorite Blossom memories? I hope this issue sparks nostalgia and makes us thankful for having such a treasured venue in The 330.

Blossom Music Center is The 330’s most legendary enduring concert venue. Created as a summer home for the Cleveland Orchestra, it has become the site of epic entertainment. From the Michael Stanley Band’s sold-out shows to Tina Turner’s powerful performances, acclaimed photographers and musicians recount their most memorable moments.
by Cameron Gorman and Kelly Petryszyn

As early as 1923, Cleveland Orchestra founder Adella Prentiss Hughes called for a summer season to help give musicians the pay they deserved. Debuted in 1918, the orchestra was regarded as a leading U.S. orchestra — but lacked a full summer season and a summer home like others in its ranks.
Upon his arrival in 1946, music director George Szell continued the call. In spring 1964, the Musical Arts Association Board of Trustees began a serious study of a summer home — and voted to move forward on getting one. Trustee
Carl Osborne noted the orchestra had “outgrown its winter season at Severance” and that it should “enlarge its usefulness.” The orchestra general manager visited five summer festival sites: Chicago, Denver, Aspen, Tanglewood and Marlboro. By the end of the year, the board hired site engineering firm William Gould & Associates to conduct a site search. Over the next two years, over 80 Northeast Ohio sites were inspected.

Andria Hoy, Cleveland Orchestra archivist: We never really had a formal summer season until the ‘40s and the ‘50s. When we played downtown [Cleveland], we had a summer pop series that merged into the ‘60s. Musicians didn't have a way to make a living in the summer. The orchestra was not full time. It was considered October through May.
The fourth music director George Szell really wanted the musicians to have full-time employment, like the New York Philharmonic and Chicago Symphony [Orchestra]. … He really admired the idea of having something outdoors, very much like Tanglewood or Ravinia.
When they hired Gould, that was really to Let's figure out: What do we need, and Where should we look? And they looked everywhere — West Side, East Side, South. … The biggest restriction was we didn't want to be too close to a major highway because of the noise, and we also had to be out of the flight of the airports.
In spring 1966, the board accepted the recommendation of Gould & Associates to pursue the purchase of a site near Peninsula. The site put the orchestra close to crowds from Cleveland, Akron, Toledo, Pittsburgh and Columbus. The board purchased an amended 521 acres for $470,000 in fall 1966. By the late ‘70s, additional land was acquired and brought the acreage to 800. In 1966, the board hired Schafer, Flynn & Van Dijk as the architecture firm — with Peter van

Dijk as the chief architect. Instead of interior columns, which might obstruct views or distort sound, the design would use a web of tubular steel pipe trusses anchored into concrete. The large width of the stage and angle of the side walls would allow for unobstructed views.
In 1966, the board announced that the summer home was going to be named in honor of the Blossom family.
Dudley S. Blossom Sr. and his wife, Elizabeth Bingham Blossom, contributed to the orchestra’s early days and getting Severance Hall built. Dudley S. Blossom Jr. and his wife, Emily Blossom, also supported the orchestra. The Blossom family gave $1.3 million toward the $8.3 million Blossom Music Center. At the July 2, 1967, groundbreaking, Elizabeth and her youngest granddaughter, Betsy, dug the first shovels of dirt. Emily declared, “There is music in our hearts today. There’ll be music in the air a year from now.”
Despite doubt, she was correct.
Hoy: We hired Peter van Dijk to come up with a concept for the pavilion. He worked with Christopher Jaffe on the acoustics. … Jaffe and he were drawing on cocktail napkins. They had looked at, What did Tanglewood look like? What did other outdoor amphitheaters look like? And they had a real vision of this bowl with a pavilion at the bottom, so the people on the lawn were on a slope, so they could see. What if we can somehow build something where there's no bad sight line? The pavilion is held up on these humongous trusses that really don't block very many sight lines. … It's got that fan shape to it, which really allows people to see, and that shape also acoustically is really good. It kind of spreads the sound out to the lawn as well. We do have speakers on the lawn.
With great fanfare, Blossom opened July 19, 1968, with Szell conducting the orchestra in “The Star-Spangled Banner” and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and the Consecration of the House Overture. The concert was telecast live on WKYC and broadcast on the radio. Szell, Emily and the MAA board president made opening remarks. “I feel that I am not speaking for myself only, but for every member of this distinguished orchestra, if I offer all these personalities, the expression of our high admiration and deep gratitude,” Szell said. Two days earlier, Ohio Gov. James Rhodes attended a private ceremony at Blossom. One critic called it “an oasis of music and beauty,” and another remarked that it could “blend the richness of nature with the richness of classical sounds.”
Hoy: There was a lot of big excitement. The roads were not all paved, and neither was the parking lot. The pavilion was done and the grass on the lawn, but they weren’t quite
finished when it opened. But I don’t think people really cared. It was a big enough deal — completely sold out.
In 1969, the Blossom Festival Band debuted under the famed baton of The Music Man composer Meredith Wilson. It’s now an annual tradition to have local festival band musicians play special Fourth of July weekend shows at Blossom. Leonard B. Smith began leading the festival band in 1972 and Loras John Schissel took over in 1998. Recently, Michelle Rakers has conducted. The Blossom Festival Chorus, an audition-based volunteer ensemble, debuted in August 1968. In 1968, ballet debuted at Blossom, with New York City Ballet as the first. Since then, acclaimed ballet companies have performed, including the Joffrey Ballet, San Francisco Ballet and Martha Graham Dance Company. Operas and operettas also debuted at Blossom, starting with Gianni Schicchi in 1969.
Hoy: The first fully staged opera performance at Blossom was the Magic Flute [in ‘85], and it was a huge production. … We’ve done operettas and things in concert at Blossom prior to that. … Then we did The Merry Widow in ’86. … Everything after that has only been either partially staged or in concert.
Roger Daltrey came and did the opera that the Who wrote, Tommy. … That was amazing. I went to that show. That was the first time we had ever done a rock opera with its creator. It was really cool to have him there with the orchestra — a member of the Who. That was in 2018.
Robert Woolfrey, second clarinet, who has been with the Cleveland Orchestra since 2008: He’s [Daltrey’s] a high-energy performer. He had so much presence. … You feel the energy of the audience. Blossom was filled with so many patrons. It was a gorgeous night. The lawn was packed, and the pavilion was packed. Watching a master entertainer like Mr. Daltrey perform was absolutely spectacular.
Blossom has welcomed renowned guests, including Duke Ellington conducting in 1969 and Leonard Bernstein conducting in 1970. Big Bird even conducted some family concerts in 1983 and 1984. Recent guest artists include Jon Batiste, Cynthia Erivo and more.
Hoy: When a guest conductor conducts with the Cleveland Orchestra for the first time, it’s often at Blossom. … Yuja Wang,

the pianist, comes to mind. She first played with the orchestra at Blossom, and now she’s here very regularly at Severance either on the recital series or with the orchestra.
We typically do some Broadway singer every year. We had Audra McDonald a couple years ago. She was amazing.
Woolfrey: Yo-Yo Ma has come to Blossom — what an incredible musical ambassador. … Yuja Wang … hearing her play was absolutely stunning.
Laufey was pretty incredible. … To hear them sing and hear the audience’s reaction and how they kind of brought everybody together that night was pretty special.

In 2001, the MAA announced the Blossom Redevelopment Project to renovate Blossom. The fundraising campaign was for $17 million. Improvements included the pavilion sound system, a stage extension, waterline work, lighting, seating, restrooms, erosion and drainage repair, the pavilion roof, ADA compliance, plazas, signage, landscaping and parking lots. The renovated Blossom opened for the orchestra’s season in July 2003, with music director Franz Welser-Möst conducting the July 5 gala reopening concert and primarily from then on.
Hoy: The most visible thing we did was the roof to the pavilion. It went from a shingle to a slate roof. We believe it is [one of the] largest slate roofs in the United States. … It’s beautiful. It’s a huge improvement I think over the brown roofing tiles that we had.
We regraded inside the pavilion. We regraded the whole floor for accessibility, and it allowed us to put in more seats, so the pavilion grew inside. It grew to 5,700, and the lawn shrank. … We redid pathways along the sides and at the top. We regraded everything and redid all the walking paths. The lawn went to … about 13,500. That is the

He [Welser-Möst] has done some pretty big works out there, like Beethoven Nine, some major Bruckner symphonies out there. He does not shy away from the big, heavy works just because it's summer.
Woolfrey: I remember, very early on, a really electric Beethoven Fifth Symphony within my first few weeks there. It was pretty special. That was with our music director [Welser-Möst].
It’s about freedom. It’s about going from darkness into light. … The synergy amongst the musicians to be able to come together and play, but then also this triumphant ending through struggle and all of that — that’s a really memorable concert.
There’s been some Dvořák symphonies. Dvořák — so much of his music can be rustic sounding and inspired by folk tunes. I think it’s the perfect atmosphere for that — his Eighth Symphony and his Ninth Symphony.

When the orchestra bought the land, it was surrounded by land that became the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area in 1974 and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in 2000. In 2011, the CVNP, MAA and Trust for Public Land completed a land sale to conserve 578 undeveloped acres of land at Blossom for $9.24 million, leaving the remaining 222 acres for Blossom Music Center. It’s one of the only amphitheaters in a national park.
Hoy: It protects all the land around Blossom. We ended up not ever developing some of the ideas that were originally thought of. There’s a partnership with Kent State University for the Kent/Blossom Festival. But we never built dorms and all this stuff at Blossom to make a music school in the summer.
We had more land than we needed, so it made sense to us for that land to go to the national park because it will remain protected. Nobody can develop it. We do not want houses, boats and airplanes. We want the area around Blossom to stay quiet.
Cinema came to Blossom in the 2010s with the orchestra’s movie concerts, which have since included “Jurassic Park,” “The Lion King” and series such as Star Wars and Harry Potter. Some movies, such as The Lord of the Rings series, featured special performances — such as the Blossom Festival Chorus singing songs in Elvish.
Hoy: A way a lot of kids hear the orchestra for the first time is at Blossom for a movie. Then, of course, they’re encouraged to come back to Severance during the year for some education programming or family programming. It’s a real opportunity to get families out, get an introduction to the orchestra.
Two years ago, Disney had a brand-new film out to celebrate their 100th year of animation, and we were the debut orchestra that summer. We
Blossom and seeing people dressed up in characters — the enthusiasm that people bring … for those type of shows — those are some standouts.
Some of the Harry Potter stuff is technically challenging to play or Star Wars. ... [It’s] super rewarding when you’re syncing those with the movies and lining up things perfectly.
Since Blossom’s inception, the orchestra has played over 1,000 performances there, and it has hosted over 10 million guests at Blossom. Having a summer home has made a tremendous impact on what The New York Times dubs America’s finest orchestra. One member of the press called Blossom a “challenger to Tanglewood,” the revered summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra has flourished at the venue for over five decades and continues to do so, with 2026’s Blossom season featuring Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets in concert July 11 and 12 and more.
Hoy: We love the fact that it’s closer to Akron. We get some of our Summit County admirers to see the orchestra. … Really bringing new audiences to the orchestra is the biggest impact.
Woolfrey: The orchestra is so fortunate to have Blossom and have the audience at Blossom and be able to create this experience. There are very few places in the country that have this kind of outdoor venue.
A pre-concert thing I do sometimes is go for a walk out and around. It’s really nice seeing families there or friends there. My wife is a musician with the orchestra as well, Tanya Ell, and we’ve been able to bring our kids there and have a picnic and then we’ll go and play a concert. The acoustics are fun to play in. It’s fun just being there and seeing people together and enjoying music.
We feed off people enjoying their

Elizabethan-style roaming players doing pop-up performances made Cleveland Orchestra concert intermissions lively at Blossom Music Center in 1969. This band of performers laid the foundation for Porthouse Theatre. Starting in 1968 during Blossom’s debut season, the orchestra’s Musical Arts Association partnered with Kent State University to create Porthouse. While Porthouse’s venue was being built in 1970, the theater held its first full-length season under a large striped tent in the parking lot. In 1971, its thrust-style, 480-plus-seat theater opened, mounting “Girl Crazy,” “The Time of Your Life” and more.
While you could see dance performances, plays and operas at Porthouse in its early years, it transitioned its schedule to three musicals a season in 2012 under Terri Kent, who took over in 2000 and is now the Roe Green Musical Theatre and Porthouse Artistic Director in honor of a $1 million gift from Green.
The first Porthouse show Kent attended was a Wild West version of “The Taming of the Shrew” under director Alan Benson. “I thought that it was beautiful that it was surrounded by the Cuyahoga Valley National Park,” Kent recalls. Benson became her mentor when she was a young actor, and Kent did her first Porthouse show, “Man of La Mancha,” in 1983. “I felt like I hit the big time,” she reminisces. This summer, see “Grease” “Side Show in Concert’ and “Lerner and Loewe’s Brigadoon” — all directed by Kent.
Porthouse has full professional status, and all Kent State Bachelor of Fine Arts theater students must have a professional acting experience at Porthouse. Alumni have scored distinguished roles, including Alice Ripley, who won the best actress Tony Award for “Next to Normal,” Jeff Richmond, who is the composer of the “Mean Girls” musical and is married to Tina Fey, John de Lancie, who was on “Days of Our Lives” and “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and more.
The theater is undergoing exciting renovations, including getting a new roof and backstage upgrades. The stage is being renamed as the Joan and Rocco DiLillo Stage, in honor of their $1 million gift. Porthouse has staged more than 3,000 performances of over 175 works since its inception. Each year, more than 20,000 patrons enjoy a Porthouse show. Kent envisions Porthouse becoming a destination for theater for those in Ohio and beyond.
“We have drawn stronger and stronger students to Kent State,” she says. “They are leaving Kent State University and landing major roles in national tours, regional theaters, Broadway, cruise ships — the entire industry.” //KP

Mike Petrello was a fan casually taking photos at a 1974 Genesis concert at the Allen Theater when one frame caught his eye. It pictured original lead singer Peter Gabriel in makeup and a silver suit, beside his guitarist and bassist, Mike Rutherford, playing a double-neck guitar as a smoke bomb went off.
“It had all the elements that you would want in a photo. It’s very theatrical and dramatic,” says Petrello, an Auburn resident who runs Mike Petrello Photography. “I thought, an art form I think I might be interested in pursuing.”
He worked at record stores, so he got connections for concert tickets and started shooting. From 1974 to 1983, he attended over 200 concerts, photographed over 100 bands and amassed a catalog of over 15,000 concert photos featuring over 50 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees. See 400 of those photographs in his Rock Shots book, available on Amazon, eBay and Petrello’s website.

In the ‘70s and ‘80s, it was challenging to shoot film concert images in low light. But Petrello worked at a camera store, took photography classes, upgraded his camera equipment and developed photos in his home darkroom to sharpen his craft.
The first Blossom Music Center concert he photographed was Linda Ronstadt, for her “Simple Dreams” tour in 1977. Petrello shares his stories of photographing the iconic venue, including some documenting the record-setting sold-out Michael Stanley Band shows in 1982.
“I didn’t realize how emotional you get at concerts. It’s hard to separate the emotion you feel at a live concert, the volume and everything that’s going on onstage, and then at the same time, trying to hold your camera steady and take a nice photo.
Through my different connections, I was able to get seats in the first several rows. That’s really where you want to be.
I shot … Moody Blues in ’81, and I had some really good seats there. I’ve seen them there three times. … Band members Justin Hayward, John Lodge, are some of my favorite guys.
I love the one of John Lodge. … He’s got curly hair, and the light is highlighting him from behind. If you look closely, he’s winking.

That shot was between songs. They had the lights up a little bit. Any time you get bright white lights, you gotta shoot. It was one of those nice moments when the band was just relaxing.
[Stanley] he’s the man in Northeast Ohio. His energy is almost Springsteen-ish. People that haven’t seen him really missed out on something special.
I got that shot of Michael looking right in the camera. You can’t say enough about that band. … The energy for the Michael Stanley Band concerts, there’s very few bands that put it out like him. … If somebody is doing a solo, everybody [would] be up on their feet like they were watching the Rolling Stones or something.

Just having that kind of venue is special. …
It’s kind of like a festival concert, people mingling around, drinking and talking.
It’s out in the country. … It relaxes you as you’re entering the place.
It’s unique. We’re lucky to have it.”
— as told to Kelly Petryszyn mikepetrellophotography.com

In August 1982, the Michael Stanley Band — a homegrown Northeast Ohio group turned nationally charting treasure — sold out four nights at Blossom Music Center, setting an unbroken attendance record of 74,404.

“Those four sold-out nights ... were special because that was probably the height of the band’s popularity, and the crowds couldn’t have been better. You couldn’t ask for more,” says MSB drummer Tommy Dobeck. “It was nuts, though. Backstage, everyone had friends, and the guest lists were intense.”
Coming home was special. And Michael?
“He was in heaven. It was perfect,” says Dobeck. “They were coming to hear his songs. These are the things Michael wrote. … We were doing mostly his tunes, and people were buying them. He sold it onstage. He was a great performer.”
So great, in fact, that Dobeck remembers many fans — perhaps overcome by the sheer ecstasy of the music and moment — trying to jump onstage.
“There was a lot of women running onstage, and Michael got clipped a couple times,” he says. “That happened a bunch. There’s a nice thing to living in the back row. ... It’s like a movie you’re watching.”
Michael Gismondi, who played bass in MSB from 1979 to 1987, recalls the sold-out shows as “a big deal.”

“Blossom was definitely … one of my favorite venues,” Gismondi says. “It was the perfect place to play in the middle of the summer, from my perspective, point of view, onstage at Blossom, when you look out into the crowd, you see this vast left-to-right panorama. … It was pretty awe-inspiring. And the crowds were very enthusiastic.”
Akron musician Marc Lee Shannon, who was in the later band Michael Stanley & The Resonators, played with the late local legend for 25 years starting in 1995 — but never got to play Blossom with him.
Backstage at a Stanley tribute show, talking to Michael Belkin Jr., Shannon confessed that he’d never had the opportunity to fulfill his dream.
“I got to play some incredible stages with Michael. I mean, we played 60,000, 50,000. … But I never got to play Blossom. I think he made note of that,”
Shannon says of Belkin Jr. “One summer day, I got a call, and he said, Hey, do you wanna open for Sammy Hagar and George Thorogood? I said, You’re kidding me.”
In June 2022, Shannon finally had the opportunity to play at Blossom.
“It was a dream come true for me,” Shannon says. “There’s a resonance on that stage. And when you’re singing on that stage, you hear a resonance on the inside of it. … It is super unique, and I will never, ever forget what it felt like to sing on that stage.”
Growing up in Northeast Ohio made the opportunity much more symbolic for Shannon.
“Everybody who was anybody played at Blossom Music Center,” he reminisces. “It was a thrill, and when I walked off, to be honest with you, it was a lifelong dream, and I had to … find a corner because I was moved. It was something I waited for my whole life.”

Janet Macoska was 12 years old when she snapped her first celebrity photograph.
“I was always on the phone to the disc jockeys at the stations. … They were next to my heroes, the musicians, but they were also my heroes. I offered to come down and help them answer fan mail,” Macoska says. “I ran a fan club for one of the disc jockeys. His name was … Big Jack Armstrong, from WKYC radio.”
Running the fan club gave Macoska access to the radio station, where celebrity musicians stopped by to be interviewed before playing in the Cleveland area. Big Jack had a TV show in the station’s building — and had Sonny & Cher on before their concert at Cleveland’s Music Hall in 1966.
Always with her camera, Macoska was there. She took a few photos — and got an autograph.
Her first in print, Macoska’s photo ran in Teen Screen magazine’s fan photo section for $2 in 1967 — and kicked off a lifetime of passionate photography. Now, almost 60 years later, her career has led her to photograph names such as Slash, Blondie, Bruce Springsteen, Alice Cooper and Aretha Franklin.
“There’s always a fan inside of me. That’s the reason that I do what I do, is because I love this music,” Macoska says. “I stood in front of Paul McCartney and David Bowie and heroes like that, and photographed photos of them and keep it fairly cool … because I switch into the photographer mode.”

Find her photos in the book All Access Cleveland: The Rock and Roll Photography of Janet Macoska. She is also the subject of a new documentary from Cleveland filmmakers, currently seeking sponsorship. Her photographs are in the collections of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, the Akron Art Museum, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., the National Portrait Gallery in London — where her photo of McCartney hung next to an Annie Leibovitz portrait of John Lennon — and more.
“It’s beyond pinching yourself. It’s knowing that somehow you got into this upper tier of photographers, and that you accomplished something way beyond I’d ever thought I would accomplish,” she says of the McCartney photo. “The 12-year-old self could never have conceived that that would have happened.”
The accomplished photographer shot Blossom Music Center, including famed acts such as Elton John, Barry Manilow, the Go-Go’s, Whitney Houston, Duran Duran and more. She shares her memories — and how those moments impacted her.

“Linda Ronstadt would have been one that I would have shot simply because she’s just one of the most amazing voices ever in a singer. She just has such range, and she’s got a lot of class. I had seen her do her more rock and roll

kind of music …. but the one that she did at Blossom, she had a whole orchestra. … I got great photos.
The Dolly Parton and Emmylou [Harris] show … both, even in ’78, they were icons by that time. … Emmylou, I knew her music — she hung with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. She was in that crowd with Jackson Browne. … She’s just a wonderful voice and a wonderful person to photograph. … And then there’s Dolly Parton, who is unlike anyone else you will ever see on the planet Earth. … Had the big wigs or hairdos — just big as you can be. She showed off talents, like she played banjo, she played guitar — she pretty much ruled the stage.
He [Michael Stanley] had trouble not selling out — I mean, he sold out everything. … Those three days at Blossom [in 1981] were just a revolution — a revolution for himself and the band and also for those fans. … Since I was running around shooting everything, the energy was palpable, and it just felt like a big love fest. I mean, I watched fans bring flowers and hold up banners, and I think several ran onstage and tried to tackle him. That’s the mark of a good concert — when you have the fans trying to jump onstage. Bon Jovi — July 16, 1985 — opened for Ratt. … But Bon Jovi was who everybody was interested in. … The audience was already on board. … This was an area that was very fertile and open to new artists once they adopted you. … Bon Jovi

benefited by the fact that they were all the things that Cleveland/Akron people loved.
One of my favorite photos is a shot I did of Angus Young, the guitar player in AC/DC. … The problem with Angus is he’s a head thrasher. … In film, you can only stop action at a certain speed, and he was faster than any film that there was. … Besides getting a fast film that allows me to slow down action, I thought, What else is going to help me? Well, a lot of light. … I needed him to be in a place where he’s getting hit by a front spot and a back spot. ... What the back spot did was freeze all of his action, including his hair, including the sweat that was … popping off his head. … It worked out tremendously. I loved that picture, still love that picture. And so did AC/DC, they used it on an album.

I don’t think I had seen Tina Turner up to that time. … She went onstage … if you were sitting in the amphitheater part, the pavilion, her energy could blow you out into the grass somewhere, because she just took no prisoners. I’ve never seen, I believe, such a dynamic female performer. … She was a veteran of performing and knew how to grab

an audience. It’s her voice. It’s her dancing. … Her visage, her face — she just is mesmerizing. And you look at her and you say, This woman has attitude, and this woman has power.
Tom Petty is a guy that it’s just in his blood to be a great rocker, and he was. … He was well-liked by everybody. His music is something that so many people could enjoy. It didn’t hold its own corner in the world — it welcomed in a lot of people. I was a thousand, million percent committed to doing what I did in my career. … I’m also privileged that I had doors open that let me photograph musical heroes as well — and to preserve that image for all time.” — as told to Cameron Gorman janetmacoska.com

In 1987, Canton native drummer, multi-instrumentalist and percussionist Joe Vitale was on tour with Crosby, Stills & Nash, playing at Blossom Music Center.
On that day, the band tried something different. They asked Vitale’s son, Joe Vitale Jr., to play tambourine on “Teach Your Children.”
“Being the ham that I’ve always been, I was like, Yeah, absolutely, I’d love to do that. And so, they gave me the tambourine,” Vitale Jr. says. “I wasn’t even miked up, but I was terrified I was gonna throw the band off if I got off on time.”

Still, Vitale Jr. — now the frontman of Akron-based band Ravenwood — walked out onstage.
“There was about 19,000 people screaming … and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. And that’s right when I decided that I wanted to do music professionally and started taking drum lessons a couple years later,” he says. “That particular day at Blossom really changed my entire trajectory of my life, and Blossom has always held a very special place in my heart because
Years later, in 1996, during the Crosby, Stills & Nash and Chicago tour, Vitale Jr. — at that point, playing drums and in high school — would have the opportunity of a lifetime.
“I really love the CSN song ‘Woodstock.’ It was originally written by Joni Mitchell, then CSN did their version of it.
It’s this really high-powered, nice, high-energy rock song that they do. And I really wanted to play on it,” he says.
As the song came up on the set list, closing out the concert, Vitale Jr. watched from the wooden slats on the side of the

“Dad … points at me with his drumsticks and points at the drum kit. And I’m like, Seriously? He’s like, Yeah. So I ran out, hopped on the kit, and there’s actually an audio recording of this … you can hear my dad going, be alright,” Vitale Jr. reminisces. “My dad put his entire career on the line to have me do that. … It came out really, really great.”

From Vitale’s perspective, the move wasn’t so risky.
“I listened to him play it at home, right? And he nailed it. He killed it,” Vitale says. “I would have never done that had I not had complete confidence that he would have nailed it. He really did well. … Stephen ended up laughing and said, Boy, you got me. But he said, He did good. The young boy did good.”
Vitale played Blossom through 2017, when he took the stage with Joe Walsh and Bad Company. He has many memories of playing the venue, including a riot almost starting in 1973 when Joe Walsh & Barnstorm couldn’t perform an encore. That concert was the first time he played Blossom. He couldn’t believe how scenic the venue was.
“It’s out in a beautiful, foresty kind of area, and also, on a technical level, the sound on that stage is excellent,” Vitale says. “It was designed for the … Cleveland Orchestra. And so, sonically and acoustically, it’s perfect.”
But the thing he remembers most about Blossom is its audience.
“They rock and roll here,” he says. “I’ve played everywhere in the world, I think, by now, and it’s one of those places — top five for me. … It’s a spectacular view, and you can see everybody, you can hear well, and you always get a great audience. The people in Ohio really, really love music, and it’s always a great audience at Blossom.”//CG

Anastasia Pantsios’ dad had a darkroom — and when a friend made yearbook editor in college, Pantsios volunteered to take photos. That summer, she learned to use a camera and develop her own film.
Later, while obtaining her graduate degree at Case Western Reserve University, she started photographing for The Observer — and began to receive promotional concert tickets.
“I got to see bands like Led Zeppelin, the Who, Little Richard, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Black Sabbath,” Pantsios says. “I could just take my camera and walk up to the stage and start taking pictures.”
She began writing and photographing for some small alternative papers — then, in the mid ‘70s, landed a column at The Plain Dealer, also selling concert images to magazines.
“Eventually I got an agent in New York and started getting a lot of pictures in bigger publications, such as Rolling Stone,” she recalls.
Pantsios released a book, Girls to the Front: 40 Years of Women in Rock, in 2017. Its contents are based on those of an exhibit of that included her work at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. She shares her memories of photographing — and attending — concerts at Blossom Music Center.

“I remember the first time I went to Blossom. … Blood, Sweat & Tears played there. … It was kind of a famous concert, too, because it supposedly … was the worst traffic jam they’ve ever had. … But you’re paying for that isolated beauty there.
Once the new wave years started, there were a lot of great people. I remember the Eurythmics. That was another show that was just oh, my God. Annie Lennox — totally amazing performer.
A lot of the more mainstream bands really surprised you with good shows. Journey was a fabulous live band, and I’ve got a great picture I love of Steve Perry of Journey wearing a Cleveland T-shirt. … I love the composition of it, because he’s just looking up, and you can see the lights to one side of him.
It was great seeing the Pretenders there, because Chrissie Hynde, this local Akron girl … she never played locally. She didn’t really start making music till she moved to London. ... She came back here, and the first show she ever played in Cleveland was a sold-out show at the Agora. … And then within two years, she’s headlining at Blossom. Very memorable were the Michael Stanley shows, particularly the

summer of [‘82], when he played four sold-out shows at Blossom. … That energy was just off the charts. It’s a little hard for people to believe now that a local band was that huge.
Linkin Park is still one of my favorite bands. … I have a lot of photos from that era too. … There’s one of Chester Bennington, where he’s just pointing at the crowd, and he’s got this interesting projected backdrop behind him.
Tom Petty was another one. … He was one of the few artists who we were able to shoot the whole show. So, I got some amazing, amazing pictures of him, because I had the opportunity to take my time and just go for the best.
That was social capital back then — to say that you were at one of these big concerts. It was an experience that you shared with people, and I think that the photos were one more way of sharing it. … You would see the photos that were in publications, and say, I was there. I saw that happen.” — as told to Cameron Gorman instagram.com/ajpanastasia

In her weekly class teaching Qigong — a Chinese healing art and science that works with our energy, or Qi, to benefit the body, mind and spirit — certified instructor Nancy Gardner often helps participants warm up by practicing an “S” pattern.
“We take a deep breath in, raise our hands above our heads, then with palms out, body swaying left and right, we create an ‘S’ pattern,” Gardner explains of her Fairlawn Kiwanis Community Center class.
Participants sway from the top of their head through different energy centers on the body — the third eye (between the eyes), throat, chest, solar plexus, lower dantian (below the navel), hui yin (at the base of the pelvic floor), knees and feet. After the last sweeping movement, the arms come back to the sides as the Qi settles down.
“What we’re doing is reorganizing the Qi field. My Qigong master suggests doing this twice. The first time we’re reorganizing our own personal energy — meaning clear your head to be more present and release any unwanted or excessive energy,” says Gardner, who also teaches Tai Chi. “The second time we imagine ourselves as big as the space we’re in and go through the nine points again to reorganize the energy in the room.”
In this way, the relaxing, swaying movement of the body is tied to the balancing of energy — in the body, mind and surrounding space.
“Qi means our life force energy, the vital energy that animates all living things,” Gardner explains. “Gong means work or practice or cultivation. So literally, Qigong is energy cultivation.”

Qigong can be divided into three basic types: exercise Qigong, meditative Qigong and medical Qigong — which takes the form of self-care or treatment administered by a Qigong practitioner.
“Exercise Qigong is more active, dynamic and most popular. Actually, Tai Chi is a form of exercise Qigong combined with martial arts. With exercise Qigong, externally, the body is moving, while internally the mind is quiet, peaceful and at rest,” Gardner says. “Meditative Qigong is the flip side of that coin, where externally the body is still, while internally the mind is active.”
With its intentional, purposeful flow and mindful breathing, exercise Qigong is an ideal method of movement for older people — and people of all abilities. Plus, Qigong practices are easier to learn than lengthier Tai Chi sequences.
“It is something that most anyone can do, regardless of age or physical condition. I have students at various fitness levels. One walks with a walker. For most of the class, she’s seated and still receives benefits,” says Gardner.
According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, benefits of practicing Qigong include improved balance and fall prevention.
“We practice stances in our classes, where we consciously transfer our weight from one leg to another. When there is no weight on one leg,

the other leg gets stronger. Building leg strength is important in improving balance,” says Gardner, adding that it also helps with breath work. “In Qigong classes, we work with a variety of nose and mouth breathing techniques — chest, abdominal and reverse abdominal breathing — and incorporate them into our movement practices. Chest breathing is like a cool drink of water. Abdominal breathing engages our potential healing powers. Reverse abdominal breathing ‘massages’ our internal organs and helps them work better together.”
Conditions that could be improved by Qigong include arthritis, depression, hypertension, fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s disease and more, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
“Through movement and breath work, we’re gathering our energy, cleansing it and releasing it so that it helps all of the body’s cells, which leads to improved health and enhanced vitality,” Gardner says.
Gardner notices that students are calmer following a session of Qigong. Many send testimonials of improved mood, clearer thinking and better sleeping, as well as fewer aches and pains.
“An older gentleman sent me an email after a class at one of the libraries,” Gardner recalls. “He wrote, Thanks for your inspiring teaching. Wow, I survived the hour and was still standing! With reawakened body parts, I went on to have one of the best feelgood physical days I’ve had in years.”

The American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement raises awareness and critical funds for women’s cardiovascular health.
By Molly Marhofer
, 2026 Akron-Canton Go Red for Women chair and community outreach director for Ron Marhofer Auto Family

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women — yet less than half of women are aware of this statistic. That is simply unacceptable.
To change the future of health for everyone everywhere, the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement is uniting women to understand their risk, address clinical gaps in care and fight back against their No. 1 killer.
That’s why on Friday, Feb. 6, we Go Red. Locally sponsored by Ron Marhofer Auto Family, wear Red Day is about raising awareness to help women recognize their risk, speak up and take proactive steps to support their hearts.
It’s also why, on Thursday, Feb. 12, at House Three Thirty, we are empowering women at the Akron-Canton Go Red for Women experience — to learn about their heart health and to support lifesaving research, education and advocacy.

Did you know that nearly half of women ages 20 and older are living with some form of cardiovascular disease? Women also experience unique life stages, like pregnancy and menopause, that can affect their risk. Yet, women continue to be underrepresented in cardiovascular research. They are also less likely to receive bystander CPR.
So, we Go Red. To meet the health needs of women now, and at every age, every stage and every season of their lives. Through Go Red for Women, we’re investing in research and solutions designed for women’s unique health needs. Women deserve support for their wellbeing at every age and stage of life.
The people and organizations you see on this page are helping us do just that.
Women are not waiting. Women are not slowing down. Through Go Red for Women, women are taking action to live longer and healthier. Let’s Go Red.

Shortly after giving birth to twins, Green’s Jennifer Petraitis started experiencing chest pain. Only four days postpartum, Jen’s husband found her unresponsive and purple on the floor of their home. Thankfully, he immediately started CPR, which saved Jen’s life.
Once at the hospital, Dr. Grace Ayafor, president of the American Heart Association’s Board of Directors, recognized Jen’s condition as a SCAD heart attack. Thanks to immediate CPR and medical treatment, Jen is now alive and well, working as a nurse and watching her four kids grow up.

DID YOU KNOW: Women are less likely to receive bystander CPR than men. Women are also 23% less likely to survive sudden cardiac arrest than men. The American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement is working to change these statistics — so all women are able to live their longest, healthiest lives.
Order the caviar treatment at Beware of the Leopard, and prepare for a taste of the sophisticated and familiar — all in one bite. European sturgeon caviar is served with Lawson’s onion chip dip — as well as thin, crispy Pringles — for the indulgent dish ($100), served at the lower-level cocktail bar and eatery in downtown Kent.
“Potato chips are perfect. The shape of the Pringle is gonna be perfect every time,” says co-owner Dave Wies. “They usually serve it with crème fraiche and minced pickled red onion, which if you put it together, is just French onion dip to me.”
This combination of highbrow details and casual flair is evident throughout the Leopard. Cheeky, colorful stickers adorn rich wooden elements, and cozy red booths allow for intimate games of Connect 4. Local art covers the walls, while string lights and greenery complete the look of the spot that Wies describes as “serious and silly.”
Opened in March 2025, the Leopard is refreshing its food and drink menus and is working on a menu inspired by fortune-telling. Look for 12 new drinks starting Feb. 15 — as well as events with fortune tellers.
Elevated yet approachable, its cocktail menu is extensive enough to please both newcomers and connoisseurs — and includes a fun “Group Activities” section with shots, a tiki bowl and more.
“There’s going to be people who want a classic cocktail, and they can get that here,” says co-owner Derek Salustro. “There’s people that want something on the lighter side, or a little weird … kind of cocktail.”
Newbies might enjoy the on-draft Sierra Myst ($8), an elevated version of a vodka soda made with Watershed Distillery vodka, Noble Cut Distillery limoncello, lemon, lime and sugar. More seasoned drinkers might opt for the Mole, Mole, Mole ($11).
“We start making that with a mole paste, and we combine that into some simple syrup, so we end up with a kind of sweet and slightly spicy mole syrup,” Wies says, adding that the syrup is combined with tequila, mezcal, lemon juice and egg white. It’s shaken to produce a thick egg white foam. “We top it with a little bit of chocolate bitters.”
Also try the playfully-named Your Mom ($11), made with Watershed vodka, clarified tomato essence, pickle brine, house-made olive brine, lemon and dry vermouth, and the Express This ($11-$35), an espresso martini made with Bent Tree Coffee cold brew and Watershed vodka that can be ordered in a coffee pot for four drinkers. The Banana Stand ($11) is made with banana pudding dark rum, Benedictine, banana syrup, lemon and walnut bitters and vanilla oat foam. It’s crowned by a vanilla wafer cookie.
“We also roast bananas in house, and we make an oleo out of it,” says Salustro. “You’ll take equal parts in weight of the banana peel and the pulp with sugar, and you let the sugar draw out all the oils and flavor from the banana. … Once you’ve filtered it, you are left with a pure, natural, banana syrup.”
Pair your drink with something to nosh on — options include snacks such as fancy meat and cheese ($23) and housemade crab dip ($7). The Leopard recently added meals like a noodle dish with glass noodles, roasted green onion sauce, pork belly, Napa cabbage and shiitake mushrooms ($19), house-made meatloaf ($15) and pork belly sliders ($14), among other hearty bites. Come on Mondays to sample handmade dumplings from a regular Fifth Flavor pop-up.
With food options like a Big Kid Lunchable ($7) and drinks such as an old-fashioned made with Dr. Pepper simple syrup ($11), the Leopard bounces from high to low — and carves out a niche in between.
“We are doing something different than everybody else in town is doing,” Wies says. “We’re going to be moving to more menus this year, and heavy on themes, more whimsy, a little more excess. … We’re always trying to push our guests a little bit too.”

As we close out another year, I am proud to reflect on the progress and growth of BBB Akron. Thanks to the trust of our Accredited Businesses and community members, our BBB continues to expand its impact and strengthen the marketplace across our six-county region.
In 2025, a growing number of businesses chose to align with BBB’s Standards for Trust, joining a network that prioritizes integrity, transparency and accountability. Additionally, we’ve seen increased engagement from consumers seeking guidance in making confident marketplace decisions. Our team expanded the ways we support both consumers and business owners across our service area, which strengthened our connections we are so fortunate to make.
Beyond accreditation, we’ve deepened our ties in the community— whether through educational programs to help families avoid scams, events that bring neighbors and businesses together, or resources that empower people to make informed choices. Every conversation, every workshop and every partnership has reinforced what makes our region so special: people who truly care about one another. BBB Akron is committed to being a resource in building stronger, more trusted communities.
As we look to the future, our team remains dedicated to advancing our mission; fostering an ethical marketplace where buyers and sellers can trust each other. We are grateful for your continued support and belief in the work we do together. We are committed to building connections, fostering trust and supporting the growth of local businesses that are the heartbeat of the community.
Our region is stronger when trust is at the center of the marketplace, and we are proud to see so many local businesses and organizations step forward to lead with integrity. On behalf of the entire team, thank you for being part of our journey. We look forward to serving you in 2026!

BBB is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors who offer a wide range of business and community experience. These volunteer directors are elected to three-year terms and are responsible for ensuring the organization remains in compliance with the operating standards set forth by the BBB system.
BBB Accredited Businesses are an essential part of our mission to advance marketplace trust. These businesses adhere to BBB’s 8 Standards for Trust and prioritize ethical business practices. When you want to hire a business, always look for the BBB Seal.
Accredited Businesses must maintain their accreditation for a minimum of 3 years to be eligible for a listing in the BBB Trust Guide. Businesses are organized alphabetically by type of business.
Consumers can use the County Key to find Accredited Businesses located in their community.
If a business has two or more locations, their website is listed for consumers to find a location near them. This list is accurate as of 12/1/2025.

Community, Growth and Collaboration
Our commitment to trust, transparency and community is woven into every program, outreach activity and communication from the BBB Akron team. As we evolve with the every-changing needs of our community, we’ve been joined by partners and collaborators along the way.
One exciting example of collaboration is our newest publication Rebuild with Trust, which officially launched in June 2025, after BBB Akron’s leadership recognized the need for consumers to have a back-up plan in place in the event of a disaster.

Our goal was to provide expert advice from experts in our communities and the response was immediate.
Organizations from across the state jumped into action to provide their expertise and knowledge to help the community. The result was a collaborative guide to educate readers on topics ranging from preparing your pantry to choosing the right contractor when repairing your home.

The positive impact of Rebuild with Trust was clear immediately. After a successful press launch with our collaborators, BBB Akron was asked to present this initiative at the Ohio Emergency Management Agency Recovery Branch Lunch & Learn as a featured topic for the 88 Ohio EMA Directors.

As more organizations express interest in this initiative, BBB Akron plans to expand this project to include additional contributors, as well as partner with experts across our sixcounty service area to provide timely, regional information our businesses and consumers.

“Disasters, whether natural or accidental, can greatly impact not only physical landscapes but also the delicate fabric of community trust.
While uncertainty may follow disaster, leaving both consumers and businesses struggling to navigate a changed reality, so too can resilience, hope and a renewed sense of community.”
Shannon Siegferth, Rebuild with Trust
BBB supports local students by offering the BBB Akron Student Trust Scholarship, a program open to students in grades 9 - 12 in schools throughout Ashland, Medina, Portage, Richland, Summit and Wayne Counties.
The BBB Akron Student Trust Scholarship offers students the opportunity to self-reflect about ethical principles that will help them develop leadership skills and character. During the process, they learn more about themselves and what they stand for through reading the UncommonSense® FRAMEWORK.
2024- 2025 school year

For the 2024-2025 school year, students could submit an essay for the Laws of Life Essay Contest or a video presentation for the Student Video Contest to our panel of judges. Over 860 essays and videos were submitted for consideration from students across our six-county service area.

New in 2025, BBB Akron expanded the Student Video Contest into the Visual Arts Contest. Now, students have the creative freedom to explore different visual art mediums, like painting or digital sketches, and submit their original artwork for the scholarship.
The prompt for the Visual Arts Contest is simple: What does trust mean to you? We encourage students to think about how trust is woven into their lives and how that can be represented through their original art piece.
To learn more about the BBB Akron Student Trust Scholarship or how to implement this program into your classroom, please contact Kimberly Ickes, Senior Director of Administration at kickes@ akronbbb.org.
Since 2023, BBB Akron, the Summit County Executive’s Office, City of Akron, VANTAGE Aging, Direction Home Akron Canton Area Agency on Aging, Akron Zoo and more, have collaborated on the Akron-Summit AgeFriendly initiative, with a shared goal to improve the lives of older adults in our community.
These BBB Accredited Businesses, Charities and Supporters have met a set of criteria designed to provide quality and accessible services to older adults.

BBB WGA does not rank charities but rather seeks to assist donors in making informed decisions about those that solicit their support. Evaluations are done without charge to the charity and are posted for free public access on give.org.

AKRON, 1943
Orchestra and big band music swelled through Summit Beach Park’s Wisteria Ballroom in the early- to mid-20th century. Featuring a 28,000-square-foot oak floor with a suspended orchestra pit, the dance hall packed in crowds to hear tunes played by renowned musicians, such as Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw and this band, pictured here on Aug. 20, 1943. The dance hall drew local performers — including Portsmouth, Ohio, native band leader Clyde McCoy, who played the park four times from 1937 to 1946 with his orchestra. Classic songs from the era included “Sugar Blues,” “Sentimental Journey,” “When You’re Smiling” and more. Opened in 1917, Summit Beach Park closed in 1958. In 2022, Canton native Joseph Rubin and his orchestra performed a tribute concert to McCoy and the music of Summit Beach Park. Rubin’s American Musical Productions nonprofit re-creates U.S. music from 1890 to 1949. On July 9, the nonprofit performs “McKinley’s Own” Canton Grand Army Band concert in Canton.
