From the Studio Owners Here at Akron Artworks, we aim to provide expert art instruction and therapeutic activities to children and adults in the Akron, OH area. It has been a tough year and a half for all of us and we are so grateful for our community of families and individuals who have stuck by the studio through all of it. We are looking forward to a time when our Covid protocols are no longer needed, but for now, we will continue to follow best practices to keep you and your loved ones safe when you come to create with us. Join us this fall in our creative space, where individuals of any age can explore art materials, develop their creative selves, and soothe the soul through stress-reduction and other therapeutic activities.

COVID PROTOCOLS The staff at Akron ArtWorks are following the guidance of county and federal public health experts with a health and safety plan that lets us welcome everyone back to the Studio. In order to keep everyone safe please do not come in to the studio if you are feeling ill, including but not limited to fever or cough. We have implemented the following Covid-19 health protocol: Face coverings are required for all students and staff. Total camp/class sizes will be limited to a maximum of 12-18 students per current guidelines. Students will be assigned to specific work-spaces at least 3-6ft apart. There will be sufficient room to work sitting or standing comfortably. There will be no sharing of materials/art supplies. Students will receive personal material kits for use over the duration of camp/classes. All work-spaces, sinks, restrooms, and other touchable surfaces will be sanitized before and after each class/camp. For camp students will take breaks outdoor under supervision in small groups to give them a chance to stretch/snack at a safe distance.

This course introduces students to a range of art making mediums and techniques, including different application methods to develop an awareness of line, volume, form and color.
This course introduces students to a range of artists from Monet to Frida Kahlo to Andy Warhol. Learn about the artist's lives and work, then create a piece inspired by what you learned. Art history made fun and entertaining.
From the conventional to the crazy we will explore all types of painting styles and techniques. Each day will be a new adventure, pushing our own limits, and learning from paint masters across time!

WELLNESS WORKSHOPS FOR KIDS & TEENS Sunday workshops that integrate relaxation and art
Have worried little one or a stressed-out kiddo or pre teen/teen? Relaxation comes more easily when integrated into art. Dr. Karin Coifman, a clinical psychologist, integrates stress-reduction and relaxation skills into fun creative activities for kids. Join us on Sundays for a series of workshops, each session is $22.

A great way for teens to get together, relax, and be creative in a fun, safe, atmosphere. Each night has a different theme, snacks, and activities facilitated by our staff. These Friday nights are facilitated by Akron ArtWorks Staff and are $25/ session.

Join us for iPhone photography. Explore your smartphone camera and learn techniques, tricks, and methods to creating wonderful images! A list of apps will be emailed before the class time.
Join us for Harry Potter inspired wands and potion jars. Create wands inspired by the beloved book series. Each person will get two wands to create and decorate with your choice of core! And we will make stress reducing potion jars.
Wellness Workshops (ages 15-Adult) Thursday workshops that integrate relaxation and art
Join us on Thursday nights for a series of workshops for teens (14+) and adults that integrate wellness and relaxation through art. Take a moment each week to destress while exploring your creativity with a variety of artistic media. Each class begins and ends with brief relaxation or easy meditation, in between, we explore fun, art activities that will leave you refreshed and enriched. Each session is $25.

Meet the Studio Staff Micah Beree, Studio Co-Owner, Artist and Art Educator Micah has a M.A. in Art Education from Teacher's College, Columbia University and a B.F.A. from the University of Denver. A photographer who's other passion is in mark making. Micah believes that self confidence and self esteem can grow out of one's comfort with art making. He believes that through exploration with art materials we can discover new models of self expression and new depths of selfsatisfaction.
Dr. Karin Coifman, Studio Co-Owner, Psychologist and Instructor Karin has a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University and has worked as a therapist with children and families for the last twenty years. Karin has a deep appreciation for art and art-making and is thrilled to combine this with her research and clinical expertise in stress management and psychological therapies.
Ashley Cottrill, Studio Manager Ashley has her Bachelor’s in Psychology from Kent State University and is currently attending Ursuline College earning her Masters in Counseling and Art Therapy. Ashley has always been interested in the connection between art and mental health because art has been a powerful tool for her personally in times of stress. The media Ashley gravitates towards is acrylic painting, pencil drawing, and a little bit of digital art.

Meet the Studio Staff Alexis Huntsman, Studio assistant and Instructor Alexis graduated from Kent State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art and a minor in Sculpture and Expanded Media in 2019. She is a practicing artist in both Summit and Stark county. She is well versed in all areas of art creation with a focus on 3D work.
Mellissa Redman, MFA, Instructor Mellissa earned her Masters in Painting from Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University and a Bachelors in Painting and Drawing from The University of Akron. She is presently the Art Specialist at the Shaw JCC of Akron’s Camp JCC and was the visual art coordinator for Akron’s 2017 High Arts Festival. During the 2015-16 school year Mellissa was a featured artist in the Midwest Artist Studios ProjectTM. Watercolor is her favorite medium to work with and her paintings tend to include drawing, serigraphy and collage. Samuel Hoskins, Studio assistant Samuel studied art at East Tennessee State University and has been a freelance artist for over 10 years. He enjoys teaching art and has taught a number of different mediums to all age groups. Samuel’s primary art mediums are mix-media/watercolor and digital art. Samuel believes wholeheartedly in the power of art making in all its forms.
