At 42 years old, Quan Nguyen, owner of Duct-Man Mechanical and the 2026 Man of the Year, made a lifechanging decision that most people would never consider. He joined the United States Air Force. Today, he proudly serves in the U.S. Reserves and represents the very de nition of perseverance, courage and commitment. As America prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, this year’s Men of Success issue is centered around the spirit that built our nation — resilience, hard work, sacri ce. THE GRASS IS GREENER: Yummi Harvest is a small, family-run farm in Lady Lake near The Villages that grows fresh microgreens, wheatgrass, moringa and pet grass. A TOWN: Montverde’s Harper House o ers a rare glimpse into Lake County’s earliest days. Built in the late 1870s, it’s the town’s oldest surviving structure and a lasting reminder of pioneer life. Choosing the career: I was at UCF in a computer science program and after year three I knew I did not want to do that. A couple of my friends talked me into going to EMT school. Then I met some re ghters on a call and I decided it looked cool.

Staying motivated: Honestly, it’s just fun. Every day you don’t feel like you’re going to work. You’re just hanging out with your buddies.

What people don’t know:

People don’t realize we had four shootings just on our shift in three weeks. We don’t get breaks. We come back and then go right back out.

A moment that stuck with me: The one that sticks out in my head is not a good one. It was my rst pediatric code by myself. That was a rough one.

Beach instead of burn-out: On top of all of these activities, I also work and play soccer. To keep me from getting overwhelmed, I make time to recharge by going to the beach, spending time with my family and eating good food.

Looks can be deceiving: Some people think that I’m not approachable and that I always look like I’m mad, but I’m actually really sweet.

After high school: I plan to attend Lake-Sumter State College for two years, then transfer to UCF or USF to study biology and become an optometrist. I’ve always been interested in the eye and how much it can reveal about overall health.

Best advice: Do what your heart tells you, but don’t be afraid to try new things. Think outside the box and don’t let anything intimidate you. You’re only a teenager once, so make it count.

ancer Nation (formerly the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship) says you are a cancer survivor from your day of diagnosis through the rest of your life. Not everyone identifies personally with the term “survivor,” but the concept of survivorship is far-ranging and inclusive.

Survivorship:

• includes both physical and mental health.

• applies not just to patients, but also to families and caregivers.

Survivorship care:

• addresses the entire cancer community at all levels of support.

• begins on the day of diagnosis and applies to the rest of one’s life.

RBOI’s free support activities to the community are available both virtually and in person, and are designed to help you and your family from the beginning (even before a diagnosis is made) for as long as you need them. Financial Survival

Cancer is expensive, not only for treatment but for related costs like transportation, lodging, child care, home care, and respite care. Those costs can create financial hardship, which can impact survivorship,

especially if one skips medication or appointments just to get by.

Resources are available at the local, regional, and national level. They include H.U.G.S. in Marion County, the Citrus Aid Cancer Foundation in Citrus County, Elder Options of North Central Florida, and more. RBOI’s social workers and cancer navigators can help you access resources to lessen your financial burden.

Survivors Speak Out

What does survivorship mean for daily living? In 2025, more than 2,000 people across the US answered Cancer Nation’s annual survivor survey. Findings include the following:

• Rising health insurance cost was the number one financial concern. It affected 73% of survivors, with 25% saying insurance coverage played a role in their treatment decisions.

• Most survivors were satisfied with treatment and care, but satisfaction dropped from 78% in 2024 to 70%. Younger and underserved patients were especially affected.

• Most survivors, 88%, believe cancer research benefits them, but 53% believe it is influenced by politics. They still trust the science, but are concerned mainly with funding and communication.

• More than half of survivors felt comfortable with using artificial intelligence (AI) for basic tasks, like scheduling appointments and collecting intake data. Fewer than half felt comfortable with AI performing more complicated tasks, like helping with diagnosis or prescribing drugs.

hange is rarely comfortable or without emotion.

Yet as much as we humans resist change, a big picture view reminds us that when change is intentional and well planned, the rewards can be enormous.

Dale Cebert started his private wealth advisory practice in 1998, masterfully molding it into a trusted firm known for putting clients first. Cebert Wealth expanded its client base to all 50 states and has offices in three Central Florida locations, including two in The Villages.

Over the last seven years, Cebert Wealth became the third largest Ameriprise franchise in the state of Florida.

“We’ve doubled our assets in the last five years,” says Dale Cebert. “When we joined Ameriprise in late 2018, we were at about $425 million in client retirement assets, and we grew that to $998-million-plus.”

In early February 2026, Cebert Wealth took their nearly $1 billion book of business, left Ameriprise and went to LPL Financial.

CLIENT DRIVEN

For Cebert Wealth, their clients’ future was worth all the time and effort such a change required.

“It took 28 years to build my practice. Changing broker dealers is a lot of work but we’re doing it for a lot of beneficial reasons,” says Dale.

The primary reasons were lower costs for Cebert Wealth’s clients and significantly expanded investment choices for their managed platform and insurance options.

When Dale and his team sat down to go over the numbers, they realized that the fee difference for their clients over the next decade was substantial. That alone helped make the move worthwhile.

Once Cebert Wealth received regulatory approval from the state of Florida, activity began transitioning to LPL Financial.

As of mid-April, Cebert Wealth was still in transition with the brokerdealer move but was ahead of schedule from their expectations.

“You would like to have it all done at one time, but realistically, we know these things take time,” says Dale. “Our team is working diligently to expedite the process and get back to our normal function.”

Since its founding in 1989, LPL Financial has grown to be recognized as the country’s largest independent broker-dealer with over $1 trillion in advisory and brokerage assets.

“Ameriprise is a very good company. We enjoyed everyone we worked with there and appreciate the time we processed our business through them,” says Dale. “We thought we always had very good investment choices with Ameriprise. The reality is that now at LPL we have all those choices and then some, so there’s a lot more investment flexibility.”

The change in broker-dealers does not have an impact on where

clients meet with their advisors. Cebert Wealth still has all three office locations and is even in the process of adding a fourth location in Orlando.

The process of transitioning to another broker-dealer was a disruptive and time-consuming logistical undertaking for Cebert Wealth. But when you put clients first, as this team does, the end result is worth it.

“We feel LPL is the partner that will help us achieve our goals in the most effective and efficient way possible for our clients’ futures,” says Dale. “We made this move because we believe the transition will enable us to continue providing an outstanding client experience and to build longterm relationships.”

Dale occasionally has clients ask how long he plans to continue in the business. He’s happy to put their minds at ease, noting, “I wouldn’t make a move like this if I didn’t plan to be around and participating in the benefits of this change for the long haul.”

ECONOMIC UPDATES

We love seeing people in person face to face, but thankfully, with the benefits of modern technology, we have the ability to help more people beyond this radius.

Dale explains that in addition to investment options, LPL Financial offered enhanced flexibility when it came to educational events for clients.

Cebert Wealth is now able to archive their weekly Economic Updates, which are held in person and online Wednesday nights at 6:30pm at their Brownwood Square Office. These popular broadcasts give clients assurance and confirm accountability as they know their advisors are closely monitoring market fluctuations and being proactive to minimize downside.

“For years we’ve had clients ask if there was a way to watch the updates at another time than when we were broadcasting live,” says Dale. “We have clients in all 50 states, and not all were available at the times we were broadcasting. In the past we were only able to do them live. Now we can archive updates so clients can sit down to watch at their convenience.”

Initially, Economic Updates were done quarterly and in person, but everything changed during the pandemic.

“When the pandemic hit and we were no longer able to invite clients into the office, we immediately realized this was an important time to be in contact with them,” recalls Dale, who is the podcaster and the presenter of the weekly Economic Updates.

During the Covid-19 lockdowns, beginning in March 2020, Economic Updates became a regular occurrence.

We monitor everything—from world events to market movements—and how they’re impacting areas where we have exposure within our portfolios.

Dale. “We realized how valuable this was to our clients and continued doing them twice a week. Now we’re able to record those events so clients can listen when it’s convenient

“With everything going on in the world right now, markets have been very volatile and there is always economic news to talk about,” says Dale. “We monitor everything—from world events to market movements— and how they’re impacting areas where we have exposure within our portfolios. Our weekly updates are a tool that let us cover a lot of ground. They assure our clients that we’re paying attention to what’s going on. It’s a way to make sure we’re accountable to

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

These events will offer more indepth information than would be practical for the 30-to 40-minute Economic Updates.

“The long-format educational events and podcasting will be beginning this summer once our transition is complete and things are back to normal,” says Dale. “We can record and archive these for clients to watch any time.”

Thanks to 21st century technology, clients can be as engaged as they wish in learning about investment opportunities.

“We love seeing people in person face to face, but thankfully, with the benefits of modern technology, we have the ability to help more people beyond this radius,” says Dale. “We have clients we’ve worked together with for years but have never been in the same room together.”

This active communication between clients and advisors makes Cebert Wealth unique. Some clients rarely check their statements; others only check periodically, but for those clients who are very interested and want to be educated on investments, the team is happy to meet that need.

“We know what’s happening in the world and how we’re positioned in relation to that,” says Dale.

“We manage assets ourselves in house; nothing is subbed out to a third party. We know everything in our models, and our investment committee has chosen them, so everybody on the team knows what we own and why.”

RELATIONSHIPS MATTER

For advisors who truly care about clients, building longterm relationships is one of the most rewarding things about the investment business.

“You don’t get to manage $1 billion in assets by accident,” says Dale. “You do things over time to earn that responsibility, one client, one

relationship at a time. Our clients are not just clients; they’re part of our extended family. We get to know their families and their histories.”

Dale is humbled to realize that some of his current clients were his clients when he opened his first office in The Villages 28 years ago. He also has clients today who are the children or grandchildren of those earliest clients.

“I have clients who I worked with before my daughter Shelby was born. She’s 27 now and I was excited to have her join our team last June,” he says.

“I love the business; if I was planning on joining my clients on the

golf course soon, I wouldn’t have done this transition,” says Dale. “Warren Buffett was 96 when he just stepped down from his daily responsibilities at Berkshire Hathaway, so having recently turned 60, I think I have a good long runway in front of me.”

When Quan Nguyễn left for U.S. Air Force Basic Military Training at 42 years old, it marked a major transition not only for him personally, but for the business he spent nearly two decades building.

Built through hard work

Quan’s story began long before Duct-Man Mechanical existed.

The son of Vietnamese immigrants who came to America by boat, Quan grew up in a struggling household after his parents divorced. Raised primarily by his mother alongside his brother Minh, Quan says money was often scarce and responsibility came early.

“At that time, we really had to grow up fast,” Quan says. “I was able to pick up odds and ends jobs mowing grass, picking weeds, washing cars, just anything that could keep me busy and bring in a little money.”

While many of his friends were paid for chores, Quan says helping support the household was simply expected in his family. He worked odd jobs to help make ends meet.

“In many Asian cultures, family nances are often pooled together, with individual earnings contributing to a shared family fund,” Quan says. “It re ects family unity and collective wellbeing.”

At 15 years old, an unexpected opportunity introduced him to the HVAC industry.

“I was trying to spend the night at my best friend Jason’s house,” Quan says. “His dad, Rick Baugh, owned an A/C business and told me if I wanted to stay the night, I had to go to work with them the next morning.”

In 2005, Quan’s boss o ered him a $40,000 salary to leave school and work full-time due to the growing demand being created by rapid development in The Villages.

Quan initially declined.

“He said, ‘If you’re not helping me, you’re hurting me college boy,’” Quan recalls. “And I stated, ‘Are you serious?’”

Quan says he was eventually red after choosing to continue pursuing school while working. At the time, he also began reconsidering the traditional college path while realizing he was already building his own successful career in HVAC.

Eventually, Quan accepted the opportunity, and over time, his “DuctMan” reputation began growing throughout the area.

The next morning, Quan went to work and quickly caught on to the trade. A job expected to take eight hours was completed in ve, and Quan says he immediately fell in love with the work.

Quan balanced work, school and leadership opportunities during his days as a student at Eustis High School. Despite facing bullying at times for being Asian, he became student council president and earned

full-ride scholarships to what is now Lake-Sumter State College.

Even while attending college, Quan continued working in air conditioning. Although it took him ve years to complete a two-year degree, he earned an associate degree in business marketing and nance while continuing HVAC work and nishing school without debt or student loans.

Then came another lifechanging decision.

Growing a business and a reputation

Duct-Man Mechanical o cially opened in Eustis in 2006.

Over the last 20 years, the company has grown from a one-man operation into a multimillion-dollar business serving more than 7,500 customers across the community.

Quan says the company built its reputation through hard work, consistency and word-of-mouth recommendations from customers.

“There have been a lot of ups and downs,” Quan says. “But hard work and persistence pay o .”

As the business expanded, so did its reach. Duct-Man Mechanical grew from primarily residential and remodeling jobs into commercial work and large-scale HVAC services throughout the region.

By 2020 and 2021, the company was recognized as the fastestgrowing and largest Trane dealer in Lake County, earning a “Rising Star” award for gross sales across Central Florida and the panhandle.

But for Quan, the business was always about more than revenue.

“A lot of people de ne success as the amount of money you have or the stu you can accumulate,” Quan says. “I used to. But now, to me, success is having good health.”

Together with his wife Ti any and their children Ty-Bryant, Alexis and Ronin, Quan built the company around strong family values and customer relationships.

That family support became especially important while Quan pursued military service.

While Quan spent seven to eight months away for basic training and technical school, Tim continued leading operations while Ty-Bryant became increasingly hands-on both in the o ce and in the eld.

The experience showed Quan the strength of the team and family surrounding the business.

“If it was not for Tim and Ty-Bryant, this company wouldn’t have made it,” Quan says.

Even while Quan prepared for military service, Duct-Man Mechanical continued growing.

“With strong community support and a family-driven team leading the way, the future looks brighter than ever,” Quan says.

A lifelong dream fulfilled

Quan says he always wanted to serve his country, but had aged out by the time his business became successful. He jumped at the opportunity to pursue his dream when the Air Force raised the maximum enlistment age to from 39 to 42.

Quan spent the next year preparing mentally and physically for enlistment, losing more than 50 pounds in the process.

At 41 years and 364 days old — just hours before his 42nd

birthday — Quan o cially enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, becoming the oldest recorded citizen to join the branch without a waiver.

“I am so grateful for the U.S. military,” Quan says. “This life would not have been possible without the soldiers who helped protect my parents while they escaped Vietnam.”

Basic training tested him physically and mentally.

Older than many of the recruits training alongside him, Quan endured long days in the Texas heat as he adapted to military discipline, procedures and routines.

“They called me ‘grandpa’ and joked about my age,” Quan says. “But once they realized I could handle myself and work in the trenches alongside everyone else, they knew I was there to serve just like them.”

Quan eventually became the group’s PT leader after consistently scoring among the top recruits physically.

Quan says the experience changed his perspective on life, faith and family.

“The Air Force BMT broke me and built me back up,” he says.

When he reunited with Ti any and the children after eight and a half weeks away, emotion took over.

“All I could do was cry,” Quan says. “The journey really changed my perspective on life.”

Today, Quan continues balancing military service, business ownership, real estate investments and family life during his preparation for deployment at the end of 2026. In the Air Force, he works in Egress, maintaining aircraft ejection seat systems.

After years of setbacks, sacri ces and unexpected opportunities, Quan says one lesson continues guiding him through life.

“It’s never too late to follow your dream,” Quan says.

Dr. Stephen George didn’t take a straight path into dentistry and that’s what sets him apart.

Before becoming a dentist, he spent eight years working as an engineer. After a shift in perspective, he went back to school, building a new foundation in biology before entering dental school and later serving in the U.S. Navy, which helped fund his education and shape his clinical training.

Now with 14 years in dentistry, Stephen brings that experience into The Main Street Dentists, a practice he purchased in 2021. The office, originally established in the late 1990s, already aligned with the type of care he wanted to provide.

A general dentist with advanced training in prosthetic and implant dentistry, Stephen focuses on meeting patients where they are, whether that’s routine care or more complex procedures. The practice also uses modern technology, including in-house lab work and robotic-assisted implant placement.

That approach, paired with a focus on educating patients versus selling or overtreating them, has helped build a practice that Stephen believes is so successful because patients are treated well.

“We treat our patients like we would treat family, which sounds cliché, but it’s true,” says Stephen. “One hundred percent of our patients come from referrals from other patients and we’re proud of that.”

Dr. Jeffrey Glover didn’t have to look far to find his calling. Growing up in Leesburg, he was just nine years old when he began noticing the care and compassion his mother and grandmother received from their chiropractor.

That early impression stayed with him and inspired his life’s work.

“My goal was to have a clinic in my hometown that treated my friends and family,” Dr. Glover says. “I know that Chiropractic helps people and it’s something I’m passionate about.”

A Leesburg High graduate, Dr. Glover went on to earn his degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 2007. During his training, he discovered he had scoliosis, an experience that sparked a deeper interest in scoliosis correction and rehabilitation. He later completed postgraduate training in chiropractic sports medicine and

became a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician.

That personal connection to care continues to shape how he approaches his work today.

But for Dr. Glover, credentials are only part of the story.

“I’ve always been a caretaker,” he says, recalling the early influence of helping his grandparents and seeing firsthand how much that support mattered.

After returning home, he purchased an existing clinic and built it into his own, growing a practice formed with relationships and familiarity. Over time, those connections have come full circle, both in the community and inside the office. Former classmates, teachers and longtime residents now walk through his doors, turning everyday appointments into something more personal.

Inside the office, that mindset shapes the experience for every patient.

“I’m very intentional about creating a culture of pride and purpose,” Dr. Glover says. “I believe the most important person is the one right in front of you. I never want anyone to feel rushed.”

That approach extends to his team, many of whom have been with him for years and share that same commitment to patient care.

“My team is like family,” he says.

For Dr. Glover, staying in Lake County was never a question. It’s where his family is, where he built his practice, and where his patients have become part of his daily life. “My mom, Lisa Burns, taught me and my sister Linsey how to rope and ride,” J’Anna Fickett says. “She was the toughest cowgirl I ever knew.”

The sisters, raised in the rodeo arena by Lisa and their dad, Jay Griner, are now bringing up their own kids in the rodeo lifestyle.

And Jay is still riding and training, these days alongside his grandkids, Colton and Jaylee. Their cousins — Linsey’s daughters, Lacy and Laney — also compete.

“Back in the day, we went to smaller amateur rodeos,” Jay says. “The fun was going as a family outing. It made for great memories.”

in towns like Oxford, was a tie-down calf roper and has been involved with the Lake County Cattlemen’s Association for decades. He also trained horses for competition.

“I had a horse named Blue and ended up selling him to pay for J’Anna to be born because we didn’t have insurance,” he says. “I sold him to a nice family and followed him throughout his life.”

Robbie Fickett met J’Anna at Eustis High and has been part of the rodeo life ever since, following her to competitions. Now he does the same for their kids.

J’Anna was practically born in the saddle. Her mom competed while pregnant with her, and J’Anna did the same while carrying Jaylee. J’Anna still competes in barrel racing and rides in the same circuits as her children.

“When they were little, we just put Colton and Jaylee up on horses,” she says. “Now they are serious competitors and are good enough to do well at nationals.”

Colton competes in team roping, primarily as a header and also runs tie-down calf roping, with team roping as his main focus. He has competed at the national level, most notably at the youth national nals rodeo in Guthrie, Oklahoma, where he placed among the top competitors.

“I love football and wrestling because they are sports I can enjoy while I’m young and still in high school,” Colton says.

“The support from our older family members is great,” Jaylee says. “They know what it’s like and then you are inspired to be like them when you grow up.”

The kids have also roped together as a team, competing from local practice pens and jackpots to qualifying for national-level events.

These days, Robbie is hauling horses, working gates and keeping things moving while also working as a Battalion Chief with Lake County Fire Rescue and running Fickett Builders, a residential construction company based in Eustis.

“You can’t rodeo alone,” J’Anna says. “Robbie is great that way. You always need someone in rodeo life as your support system, and he is that. I’m sure if he needed to, he could get up on a horse, but he’ll tell you he’d probably be happier out hunting or on his boat shing.”

That may be true, but Robbie is right there, the world-champion honeydoer, in the arena next to the chute, closing gates and driving his family to competitions.

Ranching and being in the rodeo adds something extra.

“I think the best part is they learn commitment and responsibility,” he says. “These are live animals that need care and attention.”

They have four horses: Daisy, 16; Posey, 10; JJ, 4; and Richie, 2.

The arena takes up part of the property out back on their 20 acres behind a hanging sign that reads “Fickett.” The barn houses their horses, and the dogs, Chunk and Dip, help out. The house is still being nished with a pool possibly in their future.

“When we moved to this property four years ago, we agreed that the arena would go in rst,” Robbie says. “We just need to install the lights so they can practice at night.”

The work doesn’t stop when the Ficketts leave the property.

“We have a trailer with bunks and we used to bring the bikes and horses when we were little,” Jaylee says. “It was like a vacation.”

Cracker” cowboys were named for the sound of their cracking whips used when rounding up cattle out of Florida’s thick woodlands and swamps.

Over time, that open-range approach evolved into modern ranch operations, with cattle and horses adapted to Florida’s climate.

In Central Florida, rodeo grew directly out of that work. What started as informal competitions between working cowboys became organized events, still rooted in the same skills—roping, riding and handling livestock.

Today, for many families, ranching and rodeo remain closely tied, learned at home, practiced in the arena and carried on from one generation to the next.

A vacation that meant packing up on Friday, hauling out, unloading for competition, then turning around Sunday to pack it all up again and get home late.

Artist turns years of portrait work into bold public murals.

ustin Alsedek never expected to settle down or nd his footing as an artist in a place without a steady stream of tourists.

Today, with a studio based in Ocala, his work is helping shape the visual landscape across Central Florida, including a large mural in Clermont that re ects both his journey and his message.

After graduating from Pennsylvania College of Art and Design, he took a leap of faith and built his career traveling between Ocean City, Maryland and Key West, setting up an easel and drawing for passersby.

“I’ve been a self-employed portrait artist since 2008,” he says. “I always relied on tourist towns where I could set up an easel and just paint spontaneously.”

That changed when he and his wife decided to plant roots in Central Florida.

“I honestly thought it was going to be game over for my art career,” he says.

Justin found new opportunities and a community that embraced his work through local art walks, gallery shows and support from organizations like the Marion Cultural Alliance.

His transition into mural work began in 2020.

“Festivals weren’t really a thing at that time and I saw people doing these murals and thought it would be nice to do one,” he says.

After submitting a design for a public art call, his work was selected, launching a new chapter in his career. His rst mural, centered on the idea of a “creative refuge,” re ected his own journey as an artist searching for a place to grow.

That momentum led to projects across the region, including his Clermont mural commissioned by Cherry Lake. The piece spans two connected walls and focuses on growth and awareness.

“It’s about planning for the future and trying to remind people to think about everything a ected by growth,” he says.

With his studio in Ocala, Justin balances murals, gallery work and festivals while staying selective with projects.

“I’m pretty picky about my projects,” he says. “I really enjoy when I am given the freedom to just be creative.”

n any given afternoon in downtown Clermont, it’s easy to spot the mix; kids darting between arcade games, parents lining up a putt, couples laughing or playfully arguing over a shared challenge.

It’s the kind of energy Darren Johnson had in mind when he set out to create something the area didn’t have: a whole family entertainment venue.

“I’ve been in the hospitality business and as a grandparent, I quickly realized there were limited places for kids’ entertainment, a little

“I can have a drink and food while they play, and everyone’s happy, without me having to take them somewhere in Orlando,” he says.

That sentiment is exactly what Darren hoped to hear.

While weekends are already busy, the team is building toward

becoming a go-to for birthday parties, corporate gatherings and even eld trips that could eventually tie in with nearby attractions.

“That’s the real economic engine for it,” he says.

In a city that’s steadily growing and evolving, Game On adds something di erent: a place where competition, connection and a little bit of fun all coexist under one roof.

“There’s always been a need for some family entertainment besides drinking and eating,” he says. “But Game On incorporates that, too. It’s a little bit of fun for everybody in the family.”

Fueled by competition and mentorship, Cindi Mainer opens doors for young athletes.

indi Mainer realized at a young age that she didn’t like to lose. She was competitive, but it wasn’t about beating someone else; it was about not failing herself. She had set a personal standard to be the best at whatever she was doing.

As sports became a larger part of her life, she discovered her athletic ability but also learned that physical skill alone wasn’t enough. Success required mental strength.

She believes strong mentorship is critical. Cindi’s parents were her rst mentors. They instilled a simple philosophy: “If you’re going to do something, you might as well do it right.” That mindset still guides her today.

As Cindi grew older, she was fortunate to have coaches who were patient, motivating and willing to guide her, even during moments when she was less than coachable.

“When kids have great mentors, they thrive,” she says.

Youth sports shaped who she is. Volleyball, basketball and softball overlapped throughout her school years, and the most valuable life lessons came from time spent on the court

and eld. Collaboration, accountability and how individual strengths contribute to collective success was integral. Serving as team captain taught her leadership: how to motivate others, recognize strengths and navigate team dynamics. Youth sports instilled life skills she relies on today.

Cindi was voted most athletic her senior year of high school and went on to play collegiate volleyball, a humbling reality check.

Suddenly, everyone was just as talented and just as competitive. Practices were harder, expectations higher and excuses nonexistent. There may always be someone better, but she learned that doing her best is enough.

“If you keep trying, learning and pushing forward, success follows,” Cindi says. “That mindset shaped my future and how I raised my children, who are now passing those values on to their own.”

Today, Cindi is part of an organization dedicated to youth development through sports. The Warner Family Sports Foundation provides scholarships and nancial assistance for travel, uniforms, equipment and registration fees, ensuring kids have access to

to sports medicine and sportsmanship. Additional programs will support troubled teens and coaching clinics will focus on motivation, leadership and community involvement.

Youth sports bring families together and strengthen communities, and as Executive Director of the Warner Family Sports Foundation, she is excited to help expand its impact across Central Florida.

n any given week in Lake County, Jared Massey can be found on the sidelines, in the training room or mapping out ways to help athletes improve their game.

Whether it’s coaching competitive soccer or working oneon-one with players, his focus is building stronger, faster and more confident athletes.

Although he currently coaches for SOL Soccer Club, Jared’s path into sports wasn’t limited to soccer. Growing up, he was focused on football and weightlifting and only briefly played soccer in high school.

Soccer moved to the top of his list once his children became involved in the sport.

“When I first watched my kids play, I wanted to know more about it and support them, so I dove head first into learning everything about the game,” he says.

That led him to local recreation leagues in Fruitland Park and Leesburg, where he began coaching. From there, he transitioned into

His coaching style is shaped by both his background and his commitment to growth. While he once considered becoming a teacher, Jared ultimately found coaching offered the same opportunity to mentor, but in a setting he grew to love.

Alongside coaching, Jared has built his own training business, Massimum Sports Training Services to help athletes improve performance through specialized conditioning programs. The focus goes beyond traditional workouts, emphasizing speed, agility and injury prevention.

“It’s like a personal trainer specifically for athletes,” he says.

Jared tailors each program to the individual and works with athletes across multiple sports.

or Warren Caterson, swapping recipes and talking food is, quite literally, chef’s kiss, but diving into the history and in uences behind it is where he really shines.

That’s just what he did at a recent ‘Floridian Cuisine’ class at the Leesburg Public Library, where he spoke to and cooked for a packed room of people.

“I try not to make my presentations dry, but like something a little bit di erent, more fun and educational,” he says.

The topic that afternoon was Floridian Cuisine, and Warren moved from Native American in uence to immigrant traditions and Caribbean avors.

He also o ered stories behind the food he was preparing, reminders that good cooking doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive, useful kitchen tips, and enough one-liners

to keep the room laughing, a big part of his appeal.

“I’m not a chef who tries to entertain; I’m an entertainer who happens to be a chef,” Warren says. “If I got up here and just cooked for an hour, that’s like watching paint dry.”

Warren says every class focuses on a di erent cooking style, but he always follows his presentations with a cooking demo to show how to create a practical, delicious meal without it taking hours or having to hunt down exotic ingredients.

And yes, all attendees sample the dishes he whips up before their eyes, in this case, Yucatan shrimp and pan-seared barbequed shrimp with pineapple.

That mix of education, entertainment and food tasting is exactly why many in the room keep coming back.

Warren’s tips for turning regular dishes into fruity Floridian dishes:

• Add fruit to soups, stews and chilis: mandarin oranges, pineapple, mangos, papayas, bananas, etc. Be sure to add them toward the end of cooking so they just heat through.

• Add leftover shrimp to chili. Add toward the end so they don’t overcook.

• Create fruit salsas or add diced fruit to your regular salsa.

Then came the 2008 recession.

With projects slowing down, he found himself with time to spare. After brie y considering writing a novel, his focus shifted after a suggestion from his brother to the tune of “write a cookbook.”

Cooking had long been Warren’s way to unwind, something he taught himself by digging into recipes, technique and the “why” behind the dishes. He later attended the Southeast Institute for Culinary Arts in Saint Augustine to sharpen his skills.

“I would come home from work, kick everybody out of the kitchen, pour a glass of wine and make dinner,” he says. “For me, that was relaxing.”

His first cookbook, “Table for Two,” built around recipes designed specifically for couples, became one of the Top 100 cookbooks in America. More books followed, along with invitations to events.

But book signings weren’t his style.

“I said, ‘I’m not gonna do that, that’s boring,’” he says. “I’m going to cook and show people what to do.”

That decision turned him into a regular at libraries, festivals and community events. Before COVID, he was doing about 230 presentations a year throughout the country, now, he averages around 100-120, mostly in Florida.

Warren can also bring the experience to home kitchens through hands-on cooking classes for up to 16 people or preparing multi-course gourmet meals for intimate gatherings. He handles everything from themed feasts to personalized menus on-site so guests can enjoy every bite, relax, and learn.

Nearly everyone becomes a fan, although Warren recalls a woman who complained that she didn’t like his cookbook because she could actually cook from it.

“That’s the point,” he says.

Attendees at the Leesburg class laughed, took notes and talked afterward about trying the recipes themselves. Some bought one or more of his cookbooks.

Warren appreciates everyone who attends.

“These presentations make cooking fun for them and for me, too,” Warren says. “That’s why I keep on doing it.”

Pan-Seared Barbecued Shrimp

PREP: 5 minutes | MARINATE: 10+ minutes | COOK: 6 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

3/4 Ib large or extra-large shrimp, peeled and deveined (shrimp can be replaced with cut-up chicken or another protein)

3/4 tsp sweet paprika, or smoked paprika for a little more spice

1/2 Tbsp thyme

1/2 tsp oregano

1/4 tsp garlic powder

1/8 tsp cayenne pepper, or less to taste

1/4 tsp salt, or more to taste

1/4 tsp fresh ground pepper, or more to taste

1 Tbsp olive, avocado, or canola oil

1 Tbsp unsalted butter

Diced Pineapple (optional)

Chilled Mixed Fruit in White Wine

INGREDIENTS:

1/4 c plus 2 Tbsp cup dry white wine (sauvignon blanc or pinot grigio)

1 1/2 Tbsp white sugar

1 1/2 tsp chopped fresh mint (or 1/2 tsp dried)

2 c diced mixed fruit (cantaloupe, strawberries, honeydew, pineapple, grapes, mango, blueberries, etc.)

Fresh mint leaves to garnish

DIRECTIONS:

Combine the wine and sugar in a medium saucepan over medium heat and bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve sugar. Remove the saucepan from the heat and add the mint; set aside to cool for a bit. Combine the cantaloupe, grapes, and strawberries in a large bowl. Pour the wine mixture over the fruit; toss until all the fruit is coated; cover and chill. Store in the refrigerator for at least an hour and up to 8 hours before serving. Garnish each serving with a fresh mint leaf.

From corner tavern to local legend, one Irish pub stays grounded

’Keefe’s has been a constant in Tavares for more than 40 years, long before the county seat became known as “America’s Seaplane City” and the waterfront was revitalized.

As the Lake Region Packing Association along Lake Dora kept the city economy running with three shifts a day, O’Keefe’s became part of the routine in 1984.

“We were just a city pool hall and a tavern in the early days,” says owner Andrew O’Keefe. “The plant workers and city employees were our main customers.”

Andrew’s dad, Frank, converted the building that was originally a post o ce into the Town Tavern. It evolved into O’Keefe’s Irish Pub a few years later after Andrew took over.

Legend has it the idea for Tavares’ waterfront renewal started with city o cials and a couple of seaplane pilots right there in the dining room over a beer and a burger.

business. Andrew’s wife, Jennifer, handles the business side, and their four kids have all worked there. His brother Terence has been behind the taps for nearly 30 years, and extended family members have all contributed hours. His mom, Marcia, still pops in to visit.

“I guess when you have a big family, it makes for a great labor pool,” Andrew says.

Family presence is a big reason O’Keefe’s has so many regulars. A simple approach of good, consistent food and a reliable experience has also contributed to decades of success.

“We’re

not like a big city place or a tourist town,” Andrew says. “Our repeat customers are really important to us. It can take one slightly overcooked burger to disappoint someone, and we work very hard at making things right.”

He also works hard at fostering harmony among employees. Andrew doesn’t believe in yelling in the kitchen and doesn’t tolerate anyone treating his sta poorly. Respect, he says, is non-negotiable.

Like the city around it, O’Keefe’s has adapted over time. Smoking indoors is long gone. Menus that once tried to do everything have been re ned to focus on what works.

Drinking habits have shifted, too. What started with iced beers has expanded into a range of craft options, with O’Keefe’s among the rst locally to pour Guinness. They also o er 51 styles of Irish whiskey.

Over the years, the pub has been the backdrop for christenings, weddings, funerals and everything in between. Generations have come through its doors, from longtime regulars to their children and now grandchildren.

Even after a re forced changes to the space, the priorities stayed the same. The kitchen remained the same size, while keg storage moved outside, seating expanded, and 2,000 “mug club” mugs still line the walls.

There is a saying in the business that you go for the food and return for the service. That’s true of O’Keefe’s, where hospitality is built into the family’s DNA.

Case in point: when Chief Photographer Nicole Hamel and I rst met Andrew to talk about Guinness, there were 10 dishes unexpectedly waiting for us on the bar. On my second visit, it was a pint and poutine fries. When I mentioned

Andrew also understands that not everyone walks in craving Irish fare. A pasta dish or a London broil can make the di erence when you’re trying to satisfy a table with di erent tastes. The menu re ects that balance, from Irish staples like shepherd’s pie to fried haddock and fresh salads.

After decades and 15,000 poker chips handed out for drinks on the house, Andrew knows you only get back what you put in, and the foundation he has built makes it feel like the story is still being written.

“Maybe one of my kids or another family member will eventually take over,” he says. “Either way, I hope we’ve built something special that will last another 40 years.”

y mom turns 81 this month and it’s hard to believe I’ve been with her for ve years. It’s even tougher to fathom that it’s the longest we’ve lived under one roof.

As the only child of parents who divorced young, I was parceled out to various relatives and shuttled back and forth between the two.

When I was 4, I was shipped o to California via Delta Airlines with a note pinned to my dress that read, “Please deliver to Bob Horan.”

Mom and I lived together on and o , but mostly visited during summers and holidays in Florida. It was a lifetime of birthday cards and care packages.

When the weekly phone calls went from “I miss you” to “I don’t want to end up alone,” I packed up my things and headed east.

My hopes for a “Golden Girls” reunion scenario ended up a bit more like “Grey Gardens.” I devolved into a teenager and she instinctively responded in kind. Slamming doors and ignoring each other for hours at a time became a regular occurrence.

I’m pretty sure we spent a few months texting from the opposite ends of the house, using emojis when words didn’t work. Her cat Baby Girl didn’t come near me for two years.

Then things got real. Shortly after my beloved auntie suddenly passed, mom’s health went downhill. She started falling and the hospitalizations became more frequent.

Instead of doing basic chores, I installed bathroom bars and set up a hospital bed. I found an estate planner, started working from home and Googled everything from “food for renal health” to “what is palliative care?”

Aside from putting bubble wrap everywhere and hiding the car keys, I was over my skis and winging it.

Still am.

I meet other struggling Gen X caregivers all over town. We exchange glances in line at the pharmacy or nod in the hospital.

My mom’s longtime doctor had to retire to care for her own parent, which didn’t sit well with my mom. I keep threatening to start a support group.

We’re nally starting to work as a team and appreciate that time is short.

The inevitable has brought us closer and the emoji speak has turned into practical agreements and hugs. and now Baby Girl nally sits on my lap which makes mommy very happy.
