Why Screen?

hrough early detection, screening can make cancers easier to treat and help reduce cancer deaths. Cancer screening is done when you have no symptoms. Symptoms mean that cancer may have grown, spread, and be harder to treat.

• Physical exams check for lumps or anything that seems unusual. A history of your health habits, past illnesses, and treatments can also gauge your risk.

• Laboratory tests can include taking samples of tissue, blood, urine, or other bodily substances.

• Imaging procedures like computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, and more can scan areas inside the body for anything unusual.

• Genetic tests analyze cells or tissue to look for changes in genes or chromosomes, which may indicate a specific disease or risk.

Tests include mammography for breast cancer, Pap test for cervical cancer, colonoscopy for colorectal cancer, low-dose CT scan for lung cancer, PSA test for prostate cancer, and more. An abnormal result may require additional tests. For example, a screening

mammogram may find a breast lump, but a diagnostic test like a biopsy will tell whether cancer is present. A test recommendation by your health care provider doesn’t necessarily mean cancer is suspected. Some procedures have risks as well as benefits, so talk to your doctor to see what’s right for you.

What Puts You at Risk for Cancer?

According to the National Cancer Institute, the moststudied known or suspected factors for cancer risk are:

• Advancing age (the most important risk factor for cancer overall and for many cancer types)

• Alcohol consumption (mouth, throat, esophagus, larynx, liver, and breast cancer risk)

• Environmental exposures to cancer-causing substances

• Chronic inflammation through cancer-associated DNA damage

• Certain foods, like red and processed meat (colorectal cancer risk)

• Hormone exposure for a long time and/or to high levels of estrogen and progesterone (breast cancer risk)

• Immunosuppressive diseases like HIV/AIDS, and drugs that suppress the immune system

• Infectious agents like some viruses, bacteria, and parasites

• Obesity (breast in postmenopausal women, colon, rectum, endometrium, esophagus, kidney, pancreas, and gallbladder cancer risk)

• onizing radiation, including radon, X-rays, gamma rays, and other forms of high-energy radiation, through cancer-associated DNA damage

• Sunlight and exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation (skin cancer risk)

• Tobacco use, linked to the development of 17 different types of cancer in addition to lung cancer

Screening Can Start at Home

Self-administered breast exams have long been recommended for women. Although rare, breast cancer can occur in men, who can also benefit from a self-exam. Skin cancers, including melanoma, can be found by examining yourself for unusual moles or sores.

Longest serving police chief would live his life of service all over again.

Call to service: I quit high school in March 1959 to join the Air Force. I was a nuclear weapons specialist and was in from 1959 to 1963. I got my GED in the Air Force but took the Florida GED after I got out to get my diploma from Umatilla High School.

Who inspired me: The state trooper teaching Driver’s Ed. in high school and trooper Johnny Cox from Clermont, who always gassed up at the station I ran in Umatilla.

Fun fact: Chief Among Chiefs: America’s LongestServing Police Chief: Biography of Chief Tommy Merrill (by Buddy Haack and Gayle Beck) was released in August 2025 and is available on Amazon.

Greatest accomplishment: I received the Distinguished Service Award from Florida Peace O cers’ Association and was recognized as the longest-serving police chief in the United States.

If I had to do it over again: I’d do it the same way. I loved my job and enjoyed going to work. I liked putting bad people in jail and helping good people.

I’m most proud of: The people I hired. You’re only as good as the people who work under you. I trained a lot of police o cers who worked all over the state after they worked for me.

Impactful experience: In March 1969, I got in a bad shootout during an arrest and had to shoot a man. Back in those days, you didn’t go to a therapist when you shot somebody. You just had to work it out. I talked to other o cers who’d been through it, so that’s what helped me. I quit for a while and went to work at a Ford dealership, but that wasn’t what I liked to do.

Since retiring: I have a John Deere tractor, so I stay busy taking care of our place in Mabel and helping my neighbors.

Favorite meal: Ribeye steak cooked medium rare with baked potato and banana pudding for dessert.

On my bucket list: My mother was 93 when she died and I turned 82 in December, so I’d like to live as long as she did.

A personal achievement I’m proud of: Crocheting my rst sweater! I learned how to crochet in January of 2024 because I wanted a frog hat and all the ones I could nd were not exactly what I wanted. HIGH-TECH HEALING TO MOVE YOU FORWARD

Restore your mobility and confidence with Williams Institute of Orthopedics’ cutting-edge orthopedic solutions.

ADVANCED SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY

At Williams Institute of Orthopedics (WIO) in Lady Lake, innovation is transforming the way patients heal. Dr. John T. Williams Jr., has built his practice on a commitment to advanced surgical technology. “It’s not technology for technology’s sake” says Dr. Williams. “I want my patients to know that we are constantly pursuing training on new technologies and techniques because that means better outcomes for them.”

One of the primary technologies employed by the practice is the Robotic Surgical Assistant (ROSA®), which is used in knee replacement surgeries. Dr. Williams has been specially trained on this machine, allowing him to provide more precise and less invasive joint replacement surgeries. “Using technologies like ROSA® often means less time under anesthesia, reduced blood loss during surgery, and faster healing and recovery times for my patients”

Dr. Williams explained. “We have seen some really great results for people since implementing robotic surgery as an option.”

In addition to high-tech surgical solutions, WIO offers general orthopedic services, total joint replacements (hip and knee), trauma and fracture management, regenerative therapy, and an on-site physical therapy clinic, providing excellent orthopedic care to residents of the tri-county area. The WIO team is committed to helping patients optimize joint health and pursue active lifestyles. Our team is trained in a wide variety of surgical and non-surgical treatment options that are tailored to you and your unique needs. Our onsite physical therapy clinic is also a convenient way to get back to living after an injury or procedure.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES & EXPERTISE

Platlet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platlet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a natural treatment to repair injured tissues. Concentrated platelets obtained from a patient’s own blood contain growth factors that stimulate the body’s natural healing properties. WIO offers PRP injections to treat pain from arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, fractures, sprains and more.

ClarixFlo Treatment

ClarixFlo is a non-surgical option used to treat osteoarthritis. It is a sterile powder derived from donated human placental tissue containing growth factors and anti-inflammatory agents that helps repair cells and regenerate damaged tissues. It can also be used to treat fractures, inflammation, bursitis, sprains, and more.

Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Hyaluronic acid (HA) injections are an approved treatment for osteoarthritis of the knee. This is an alternative treatment for steroid injections. HA naturally occurs in the fluid of the knee joint, providing lubrication. These injections increase the amount of HA in the joint to reduce pain and increase range of motion.

MyMobility App

Using an innovative approach to pre- and postoperative care, MyMobility mobile app provides education regarding your condition and surgery. It provides exercises prior to surgery to promote strengthening in preparation for postoperative exercises and can be used to send messages directly to your care team. With reminders

to complete tasks and continual encouragement throughout the process, your pre-and postoperative  course is greatly improved.

CBD Products

WIO features our own line of CBD products. We offer a CBD-infused topical salve and CBD topical massage oil. CBD is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It is used for chronic pain to reduce opioid use. It can also be used to treat migraines, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, tendonitis, inflammation, and more.

MEET THE TEAM

The Williams Institute of Orthopedics team brings decades of specialized expertise and a shared commitment to healing to every patient. Our surgeon, providers, and staff are dedicated to helping patients regain strength and mobility through advanced orthopedic care and personalized recovery plans.

John T. Williams, JR., MD

WIO’s talented team of orthopedic health professionals is led by John T. Williams Jr., MD. Prior to building his patient base in Central Florida, Dr. Williams earned his medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine in 1994, eventually serving eleven years as the director of the total joint program at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. Lake and Sumter counties continue to grow as new communities take shape.

ove it or hate it, Lake and Sumter counties are growing, and you can’t blame people for wanting to move to our beautiful community.

Our scenic waterfronts, open space and proximity to Central Florida’s job markets continue to entice families and retirees to make this area home. Population continues to increase and housing demand rise.

Lake County’s population has seen signi cant growth over the last decade, reaching 460,000 (estimated) in 2025, up nearly 4 percent in the past year.

That surge isn’t slowing down, and neither is homebuilding. According to data from builder’s websites, Lake County alone is home to more than 160 new-home communities that o er everything from mid-priced

single-family dwellings to activeadult and custom “build-on-yourlot” options.

Growth is just as evident in Sumter. While Sumter’s overall population remains smaller, it has been one of the state’s rapidgrowth counties in recent years, and developers are responding with a growing number of new subdivisions, including communities

with homes starting in price ranges below $250,000 and large-scale mixed-use projects in areas like Lake Panaso kee.

The housing landscape here is changing fast. In this roundup, we highlight a few standout developments that show how Lake and Sumter counties are evolving and what they o er residents who are choosing to put down roots here.

• Amenities include clubhouses, fitness centers, pools and event spaces

• Large mixed-use developments planned

• Builders targeting diverse buyers, including families, retirees and multigenerational households

Hammock Oaks

LOCATED IN LADY LAKE

SCALE: Approximately 732 acres with plans for about 2,500 residential units and mixeduse space. HOMES: Villas, single-family homes and age-restricted neighborhoods built by five national builders. AMENITIES: Resort-style pools, fitness centers, courts, trails, art and event spaces and lifestyle programming.

One of the largest and most diverse developments is taking shape in Lady Lake. Hammock Oaks is a mixed-use community designed to offer something for nearly every stage of life. The development spans roughly 732 acres and sits between County Road 466 and Lake Ella Road, and Cherry Lake Road and Rolling Acres Road, and will ultimately include about 2,500 residential units, retail space, trails and shared amenities.

Hammock Oaks brings together builders Meritage Homes, Dream Finders Homes, Maronda Homes, Ryan Homes and Kolter Homes to offer a blend of housing styles that range from villas to age-restricted neighborhoods and traditional single-family homes.

Ryan Homes’ Hammock Oaks Villas offers single-story, paired villas in an all-ages setting, with low-maintenance living built into the design. The openconcept homes measuring about 1,509 square feet feature three bedrooms, two bathrooms, two-car garages and private backyard.

Cress wind at Hammock Oaks — a 55+ community by Kolter Homes designed for active adults who want close proximity to The Villages while maintaining a more intimate neighborhood feel — opens this spring.

Planned amenities include a SmartFIT Training Center, fitness and yoga studios, a resort-style pool, pickleball, tennis and bocce courts, walking trails, art and event spaces, and full-time

lifestyle programming.

Much of the marketing emphasizes convenience to entertainment, dining and shopping in The Villages, while still offering a quieter residential environment.

Another component of the development by Maronda Homes, The Reserve at Hammock Oaks, focuses on larger single-family homes with an emphasis on space and convenience. Homes range from about 2,044 to more than 3,000 square feet, with three to six bedrooms and three-car garages.

Lochside & Southloch

LOCATED IN MOUNT DORA

SCALE: Lochside includes about 150 single-family homes; Southloch adds 180 condominium residences. HOMES: Waterfront single-family homes and modern condominiums with multiple floor plans. AMENITIES: Boat ramp, pool and cabanas, nature play spaces, butterfly gardens, trails and golf cart access.

Now open in Mount Dora, Lochside brings lakeside living to a growing residential corridor just minutes from the city’s historic downtown. The gated community developed by Taylor Morrison features about 150 single-family homes on a variety of lot sizes, with select homesites offering direct access to Loch Leven and the option to build private boat docks.

Homes at Lochside are available in 15 floor plans, ranging to 4,181 square feet, with as many as six bedrooms, five-and-a-half bathrooms, and three-car garages.

Lochside’s planned amenities are tied to its waterfront setting. Residents will have access to a community boat ramp, viewing deck, resort-style pool, cabana, playground space, and a National Wildlife Federation Monarch Butterfly Garden.

Just across the street from Lochside, Southloch is selling from an interim sales office within the

Lochside community. Southloch, which was also developed by Taylor Morrison, is a gated neighborhood featuring 180 condominium residences, with homes starting in the high $200s.

Southloch includes 16-foot and 20-foot-wide condo designs in a mix of layouts with modern finishes, solid surface countertops, and select plans with one-car garages. Planned amenities mirror the wellness and outdoor focus seen throughout the area, including a pool and cabana, hammocks, cornhole areas, a Nature Play Space™, and another Monarch Butterfly Garden.

A planned golf cart trail and sidewalk network will connect Southloch to the Country Club of Mount Dora and a nearby Publixanchored shopping center, making it possible to run errands or head to recreation without relying on a car.

Wellness Way

LOCATED IN CLERMONT

SCALE: More than 15,000 acres planned as a long-term growth corridor. HOMES: Entitled for roughly 15,000–16,000 residential units across multiple future communities. AMENITIES & DESIGN: Integrated wellness focus, employment centers, commercial space and 30% preserved open space.

South Lake County, once defined by rolling hills and orange groves, is rapidly transforming, and no area reflects that change more than Wellness Way, a master-planned growth corridor southeast of Clermont. Spanning more than 15,000 acres, Wellness Way represents one of Lake County’s most ambitious long-term development plans, blending residential neighborhoods, employment centers and wellness-focused amenities into a single, carefully guided vision.

Wellness Way has been in planning for more than a decade. Rather than developing piecemeal subdivisions, the county designed the corridor to attract high-tech and high-wage industries, including healthcare, biotech and sports science, while reserving about 30 percent of the land for open space and green buffers.

Twisted Oaks

LOCATED IN WILDWOOD

SCALE: Mid-size residential development in Sumter County. HOMES: Eight singlefamily floor plans ranging from approximately 1,433 to 2,386 square feet. AMENITIES: Community-focused layout with nearby shopping access and family-friendly design.

County leaders see Wellness Way as a major driver of future population growth. Lake County expects to add about 75,000 new residents by 2030, with much of that growth tied to this corridor. Under the master plan, the area will include 15,000 to 16,000 homes and more than 11 million square feet of commercial space, creating a live-workplay environment designed to balance jobs, housing and recreation.

That vision has sparked an unprecedented land rush. In 2024 alone, several major land transactions set new records for Lake County.

Among them was a $166.5 million purchase of more than 2,400 acres by GT USA, a development partnership backed by Canadian homebuilders. The acquisition, one of the largest land sales in county history, is slated to become a massive mixed-use community with thousands of homes and significant commercial space.

In Sumter County, Twisted Oaks is a new residential community taking shape in Wildwood, about two miles west of The Villages. The neighborhood designed with families in mind offers a range of single-family homes paired with onsite amenities and convenient access to shopping, dining and community events. Homes at Twisted Oaks are currently priced from the upper $200,000s to the mid-$300,000s, with eight buildable floor plans available, as well as quick move-in options. Floor plans range from

about 1,433 to 2,386 square feet, with two to four bedrooms, two to four bathrooms, and two-car garages, providing flexibility for a variety of household sizes and lifestyles.

The community’s layout emphasizes gathering and everyday livability, with floor plans designed to bring families together while still offering private spaces. Its location places residents close to Wildwood’s growing commercial areas, restaurants and events and natural surroundings that draw new residents to Sumter County.

Pine Meadows

LOCATED IN EUSTIS

SCALE: Mid-sized residential community with 200+ future homes adjacent to preserved natural land. HOMES: Single-family homes and townhomes with plans up to more than 3,000 square feet. AMENITIES: Pool and pool house, dog park, walking trails and access to nearby conservation areas.

Pine Meadows in Eustis offers new homebuyers a blend of community living and outdoor recreation in Lake County. The neighborhood features a mix of singlefamily homes and townhomes with multiple floor plans and sizes that give buyers options that fit a range of lifestyles.

Home prices in nearby listings start in the mid$200,000s, with plans up to over 3,000 square feet.

Pine Meadows stands out for its connection to nature and family-friendly spaces. Residents will soon have access to a community swimming pool and pool house, perfect for cooling off on warm Florida afternoons. An onsite dog park gives four-legged family members

a dedicated place to socialize and play, and the community’s walking trails make it easy to exercise outdoors or enjoy a leisurely stroll close to home.

The development is surrounded by larger natural preserves, including the expansive Pine Meadows Conservation Area to the west, with more than six miles of hiking trails, canoe and kayak access, picnic areas and scenic views, and the Trout Lake Nature Center to the south, which also offers walking trails and community activities.

AGE HAS ITS PERKS

A look at the lifestyles and local communities attracting today’s active 55+ adults.

cross Lake and Sumter counties, 55+ communities remain a popular choice for buyers who want less upkeep, more connection and a lifestyle designed around how they live now.

While age-restricted neighborhoods are often associated with downsizing, many buyers are just as focused on convenience, amenities and social life as they are on square footage.

“Demand has generally grown and shifted,” says Regina Cruz-Morales, a Realtor with The Cruz Team at Keller Williams Elite Partners III. “Demographic tailwinds (Baby Boomers retiring) continue to push long-term demand for 55+ and senior housing; developers and investors still see it as a growth sector.”

Gated entrances, appealing landscaping and easy living consistently top wish lists, according to Gigi Capria, a broker at We Can Do It Realty & Investments who has spent more than a decade working with buyers in the market.

Lifestyle features are often driving decisions as much as price. Golf cart access, walking paths and tness facilities make everyday routines easier, while organized activities help residents stay active and social.

“The most important things I nd people want are low maintenance, golf cart communities and pickleball, which is huge right now,” Gigi says.

Regina, with 10 years of experience under her belt, sees the same priorities showing up across a range of buyers.

“Many older buyers do place a high value on lifestyle and convenience and will accept higher ongoing costs for access to amenities and lower maintenance burden,” she says.

Equally important is the sense of connection found in many 55+ neighborhoods. Clubhouses, shared spaces and full calendars of activities make it easier to form friendships. From card groups and golf leagues to volunteer clubs and social events, residents often say the community itself is what turns a house into a home.

When it comes to potential drawbacks, Gigi says there are few surprises.

“There aren’t really pitfalls,” she says. “Pretty much the same things as other neighborhoods; nosy neighbors and in some communities, the houses can be a little close together.”

Regina encourages buyers, especially those on xed incomes, to dig a little deeper into things like rules, special assessments, resale consideration, nancing di erences and HOA coverage, before committing.

“Always read the HOA policy and budget to con rm exactly what’s covered and which services cost extra,”

Regina says. “What’s not always included are inside-home repairs, homeowner’s personal property insurance, property taxes and sometimes utilities or cable (unless explicitly stated).”

As for pricing, Gigi says homes are not necessarily priced higher or lower than comparable non-age-restricted neighborhoods and time on the market tends to be similar.

“Evaluate total cost of ownership, price + HOA + services and comparable sales rather than headline price alone,” Regina says.

HOAs play a major role in shaping the lifestyle and freeing time for residents who’d rather travel, enjoy family and overall life without a long list of chores.

“People are de nitely looking for manicured lawns and lowmaintenance areas,” Gigi says. “Gated communities are very important to many buyers.”

In many communities, HOA fees cover lawn care, recreational amenities, private roads and gated security. Some also include exterior home painting and cable. Buyers are encouraged to ask about Community Development District fees, which can be attached to property taxes in certain neighborhoods.

“That’s a bummer for some people,” Gigi says.

There is a nancial upside, however.

“Our taxes are lower because we don’t pay school tax in adult communities,” she says.

Gigi doesn’t just sell 55+ living, she lives it as a resident of Summit Greens in Clermont. She says the lifestyle is what keeps her there.

“What I really love is the camaraderie at the di erent events organized by all the various clubs and organizations within the community,” Gigi says. “And I love, love, love being able to ride the golf cart through the McDonald’s drive-through with the grandkids. They get a real kick out of it and so do the cashiers.”

With that in mind, we’re spotlighting ve local 55+ communities that re ect the range of lifestyles available to today’s active adults.

The Plantation, Leesburg

The Plantation at Leesburg, one of Lake County’s most established 55+ communities, offers a resortstyle setting just minutes from downtown Leesburg. The gated neighborhood along U.S. Highway 27 is conveniently close to shopping, dining, lakes and parks, yet still feels quiet and residential.

The fully built-out community includes 2,820 homes, with resale options ranging from about 1,100 to more than 3,400 square feet. Homes in a variety of styles and lot sizes appeal to buyers who want lowmaintenance living without giving up space or comfort.

Amenities are a big part of daily life. Residents have access to two 18-hole golf courses, three activity centers, multiple pools, fitness centers and outdoor spaces, including softball and archery fields.

Steve’s Bar & Grill, which reopened in 2024, is a popular gathering spot for casual meals and conversation.

With more than 100 active clubs and groups, staying busy is easy. From pickleball, golf leagues and water aerobics to theater, quilting, woodworking and book clubs, The Plantation is known for its social energy and friendly atmosphere.

“THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS I FIND PEOPLE WANT ARE LOW MAINTENANCE, GOLF CART COMMUNITIES AND PICKLEBALL, WHICH IS HUGE RIGHT NOW.”

Kings Ridge, Clermont

Kings Ridge is a gated 55+ community with mature landscaping and a strong golf focus set in the rolling hills of Clermont along Highway 27, just south of State Road 50.

Kings Ridge’s 2,088 singlefamily homes spread across 15 neighborhoods offers easy access to shopping, dining and medical services, including a Publix plaza reachable by golf cart.

All homes in the community built by Lennar between 1995 and 2000 are resale-only, with floor plans ranging from about 980 to 2,560 square feet. Many homes sit on oversized lots or overlook the golf course, and association dues cover

lawn care, basic cable and 24-hour guarded gate access.

Golf is central to the community, with two on-site 18-hole courses — the South Course by Lloyd Clifton and the shorter North Course by Ron Garl. Nearly half the homes border one of the courses, and residents can choose from several membership options or daily play.

A large clubhouse anchors an active social calendar. Amenities include fitness and aerobics rooms, billiards, arts and hobby spaces, a ballroom, pools, spas, pickleball, tennis, shuffleboard and bocce courts.

A full-time activities director keeps the calendar full with clubs, trips and events throughout the year.

“WHAT I REALLY LOVE IS THE CAMARADERIE AT THE DIFFERENT EVENTS ORGANIZED BY ALL THE VARIOUS CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY.”
-GIGI CAPRIA

Lakes of Mount Dora, Mount Dora

Lakes of Mount Dora, a gated 55+ community just outside Mount Dora’s historic downtown, was designed for residents who enjoy water, outdoor recreation and a slower pace without leaving town. Shops, dining and festivals are only minutes away.

Homes range from about 1,400 to 2,500 square feet and feature two- and three-car garages, paver driveways and stone-accented exteriors. Select homesites offer lake views, while interiors include

tile flooring, quartz countertops, included appliances and smarthome features.

An 18,000-square-foot clubhouse with a fitness studio, library and social spaces serves as heart of the community. Outdoor amenities include tennis and pickleball courts, bocce, basketball, croquet and walking trails throughout the neighborhood.

Water is a defining feature, with about 4.5 miles of interconnected lakes for electric boats, kayaking, canoeing and catch-and-release fishing. Boat and RV storage, a softball field and cornhole area round contribute to the lifestyle. Lakes of Mount Dora appeals to residents who want to stay active while enjoying Mount Dora’s arts scene and lakefront charm.

Continental Country Club, Wildwood

Continental Country Club offers classic Florida golf-course living in an established 55+ setting along State Road 44 between Leesburg and Wildwood. Mature oak trees, rolling fairways and a relaxed pace give the community a timeless feel that continues to appeal to active adults.

The community is built around an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Ron Garl that opened in 1972. The par-72 course offers multiple tee options, making it enjoyable for both seasoned golfers and newer players. While the course is semi-private and open to the public, it remains a central gathering place for residents.

Homes are resale-only and set beneath mature trees in a gated, security-patrolled environment. The community long known as a more affordable option for active adult living offers easy access to shopping and dining in Leesburg, Wildwood and The Villages.

Social life often centers around Paulie’s at The Oaks on 44, the on-site restaurant known for Italian and specialty dishes. Residents gather in the dining room or relax in the bar, lounge or patio for pizza, conversation and casual get-togethers. For many, Continental offers a quieter alternative to larger developments, with a strong sense of familiarity and community pride.

Royal Harbor, Tavares

Situated along Little Lake Harris in Tavares, Royal Harbor is an established 55+ community known for its lake views, active lifestyle and strong sense of pride among residents. The gated, deed-restricted neighborhood includes more than 750 singlefamily homes and is both petfriendly and golf-cart-friendly.

A large community center offering a heated, screened pool and spa, fitness center, card and billiard rooms, arts and crafts space, library and computer room anchors

daily life. The adjoining social hall hosts everything from yoga and line dancing to bingo, club meetings and live entertainment.

Outdoor amenities include tennis, pickleball, bocce and shuffleboard courts, along with walking and biking paths that wind through rolling hills and landscaped common areas. Residents can fish from a private dock on Little Lake Harris or gather at the screened lakeview pavilion.

One of Royal Harbor’s most recognizable landmarks is its lighthouse, perched at one of the highest points in the area and often used for social events and gatherings. With nearby marinas, parks, golf courses, healthcare and waterfront dining, Royal Harbor offers a relaxed lakefront lifestyle with plenty to do close to home.

HOMEtrends

Explore the latest in design and décor.

Interior design mirrors the fashion world as each year ushers in new trends. Some movements explode in popularity, becoming the latest “in” thing. Others gain momentum in certain areas of the country, but not all. For example, the latest design trends in large urban centers aren’t necessarily going to be adopted in Central Florida. What trends can homeowners expect as 2026 unfolds? We asked local

interior designers Sheila Blue, a senior interior designer with Babette’s Furniture in Leesburg and The Villages, and Leah Conner, ASID, a Florida-licensed interior designer. Her business Leah D. Conner Interior Design is based in Eustis.

“Some of these design trends have already been on the upward trajectory and continue to gain momentum in 2026,” Leah says. “If you’re building a new house right

now, you can do any of these. If you’re already in a house, you can incorporate some trends as you move into the new era.”

Look for the following trends to take off this year.

RICH COLORS

Warm, earthy neutral tones are all the rage. Think chocolate, rust, terracotta, moss and olive greens.

“Brown is back in a big way; brown is the new gray,” Leah says. “Fortunately, we’ve moved on from gray. Rich colors are still in and will be more and more popular. The Ralph Lauren look is back—greens, browns, golds and plaids.”

“We are seeing a significant trend shift toward warm, earthy tones, particularly in beige and camel-toned upholstery fabrics and leathers,” Sheila Blue says. “People are moving away from the cool, stark gray and white trends of past years and embracing warm-toned wood furniture and natural stone elements. That said, at Babette’s, we have a regular clientele who still love soft blues and greens. The modern coastal or lake house design is a timeless style that will always remain relevant.”

COLOR DRENCHING

The trend continues of painting an entire room—walls, trim and ceiling—in the same color, adding depth and moodiness.

If you’re nervous about color drenching a large room, try it in a small space, like a powder room, pantry or library.

“I personally painted my guest room and ceiling the same warm cocoa color to create a cozy, cocoon-like feel,” Sheila says.

“It gives a real finished look to paint all the surfaces,” Leah says. “You can use deep, dramatic colors or go lighter so it’s more subtle. Even though color drenching utilizes the same color on walls, ceiling and trim, you can paint all in the same sheen or change it up by painting the walls eggshell and the trim glossy. My personal favorite is gloss everywhere!”

Leah finds many of her clients these days are open to painting trim and walls the same color.

“It’s become much less popular to have white trim,” she says.

Stone (both natural and manufactured) adds drama and movement in an organic way. Marble is expected to make a powerful return.

Look for natural stone to make an impact in kitchen countertops and backsplashes, bathrooms, even fireplace surrounds and furniture.

“We’re going to start seeing more exotic looks in countertops with different colors, grains, veining and stone variations,” Leah says. “You will see whole walls covered in the exotic stone look.”

STATEMENT STONE MIXED METALS

This prevailing trend allows homeowners to combine polished metals (think chrome and stainless steel) with warm aged metals (like bronze and brass). The sleek, polished look has a bit of a 1970’s feel.

“Black fixtures are trending out, while the understated elegance of silver and brass finishes is coming back in,” Sheila says.

Wallpaper

“Wallpaper continues to grow in popularity, largely due to its visibility on home improvement shows,” Sheila says. “Homeowners enjoy having an element of surprise in small spaces like a powder bathroom, laundry or mud room. Nature-inspired designs are popular for bringing the outside into the home. Some of the most beautiful spaces I’ve seen recently are wallpapered dining rooms, where the walls feature a pattern and the ceiling is painted a neutral color.”

“People are putting wallpaper everywhere; it’s especially popular in bathrooms and laundry rooms,” Leah says.

DESIGN ON Ceilings and FLOORS

Using ceilings and floors as “fifth and sixth walls” adds character to a room.

Checkerboard floors have increased in popularity, with classic black-and-white always in style.

“The flooring or area rug is essential to grounding the room’s design,” Sheila says. “It adds texture and color and helps to tie in all the other elements in the room, defining the space.”

“Some homes feature tray ceilings painted in two- or three-color tones,” she says. “However, here in Central Florida, ceilings are mostly still a soft white.”

“Beams will stay popular on ceilings, but I like using grass cloth wallpaper on a ceiling, which looks especially good with a tray ceiling,” Leah says.

“In older homes being remodeled, we are seeing tongue-and-groove slatted boards and beams used in more rustic-feeling homes,” Sheila says.

PATTERN DRENCHING

“Pattern drenching is the combination of multiple patterns—such as stripes, geometrics, dots or checks—all within a unified color scheme in one room,” Sheila says.

This style is often seen in cottage or “grandma chic” designs.

“As long as you maintain a cohesive color palette, the look will tie together,” she says. “For example, you might use stripes on wallpaper or window coverings, geometrics on bed linens or rugs and dots or florals on an accent chair.”

Animal print is considered neutral and can add patterned spice to a room.

CLASSIC and TRADITIONAL

“We’re seeing a ‘classic goes modern’ look where homeowners incorporate classic elements like columns outside with a warm modern interior with ashy blond woods, warm textures and layers,” Leah says.

Blond finishes are in demand in flooring and cabinets. Think ashy or rosy blond woods, not white blond.

Add warmth and craftsmanship with arched range hoods, paneling, and detailed millwork, all of which carry a timeless feel.

Feeling inspired? Ready for a change? You don’t have to start from scratch to update your living space. Pick one or two new trends, experiment and have fun.

LAYERED LIGHTING

“We are seeing a return to creating ambiance using layered lighting from various height lamps and different wattages throughout the room, rather than relying solely on overhead lighting,” Sheila says. “This creates a comfortable atmosphere that homeowners won’t want to leave.”

KITCHENS and PERSONALITY

The kitchen may be one of the most practical rooms in your home, but it doesn’t have to be purely functional.

It’s become trendy to inject more personality in kitchens. For example, hang artwork normally found in living areas, add layered lighting and bring in textiles for softness.

WELLNESS FEATURES

Saunas, workout rooms and outdoor recreation areas are trending. These features add convenience and can increase home value.

“With everybody being health conscious since COVID, I’m seeing more indoor and outdoor saunas, work out rooms, even having a pickleball court in the yard,” Leah says.

“One of my clients in The Villages converted a potential guest bedroom into a space for a sauna and gym equipment,” Sheila says. “Today’s health-conscious market looks for these features, similar to how some buyers seek a home with a pool. While not every homebuyer will be interested, which may slightly limit the buyers, 42 percent of home buyers find them desirable, and they do add value to the home.”

Speaking of home pickleball courts, Leah says outdoor living spaces are exploding in popularity, especially with landscaped pathways and faux grass areas around pavers or tiles.

CozySPACES

Many builders went all-in on the open plan concept, but cozier spaces are making a return.

“People are going to multi-purpose ‘bonus’ rooms and there’s a return to formal dining rooms,” Leah says. Rooms designed around specific activities are trending. Think game rooms, reading nooks, hobby and crafting rooms.

what’s out

There are few absolutes in design. Personal preference still carries weight, but these former major trends are no longer popular:

• All-white kitchens and bathrooms

• White subway tile

• White shaker cabinets

“While the all-white kitchen felt fresh and clean for years, people are now moving toward kitchens with warmer white or beige tones, medium-toned wood cabinets and often a complimentary color on the island,” Sheila says. “Pale neutrals are in, replacing stark white.”

“Shaker cabinets have softened into what I like to call

INCORPORATE TECHNOLOGY

“Furniture technology has advanced considerably,” Sheila says. “Most people are now interested in smart features such as hidden charging stations, smartphone technology to program a reclining piece and seating with Bluetooth music capability.”

modified shaker; this is where we start to see those hard lines give way to more scalloped edges,” Leah says. “White cabinets will never truly go out of style, but we’re going back to browns and blond wood is a really good way to do that.”

Futures

omes are going up faster in Central Florida than the workforce can keep pace.

To meet that demand, construction classrooms in Lake and Sumter counties are training students who learn by doing.

Local educators acknowledge that not every teenager dreams of a four-year degree, that for many students, the trades o er something college can’t: a direct, practical path into a highdemand career.

Many students want a solid job right out of high school, while others seek a career in the trades or a construction management degree in college.

Future Builders of America (FBA), a statewide nonpro t that partners with schools and builder’s associations, provides a starting point.

FBA Chair Cindy Hall says her organization introduces students to the industry through campus chapters, mentorships, scholarships and state and national competitions. Its four-day leadership summit takes students into real projects with industry professionals.

“The partnership between builders and students is what makes the program so e ective,” she says. “I have so many students who ended up in successful careers because of their introduction to FBA.”

School administrators in both counties are clearly on board.

Sumter County Schools

Superintendent Logan Brown says the work speaks for itself.

“Our Construction Academy is building more than structures,” Logan says. “It’s building future builders by giving students real-world skills, industry experience and a clear pathway to meaningful careers.”

“Through our partnership with Habitat for Humanity, our students are not only learning a trade, they are serving our community and we are extremely proud of their work.”

The partnership with Habitat is the engine behind much of the hands-on experience. Habitat for Humanity of Lake–Sumter invites students onto active build sites not to observe, but to work.

President and CEO Danielle Stroud sees the impact daily.

“Hands-on programs like our Youth Construction Academy let students start building a career directly from high school,” she says.

“Many of them are building a ordable homes for their peers and get a glimpse of the housing need in their own community.”

Some students even go on to become Habitat homeowners themselves; a full-circle moment Danielle says never gets old.

Leesburg High School senior Evelyn Gonzalez has

lived that impact. She joined the Construction Academy almost by accident, because she wanted to help repaint a community building. That led to earning a spot on the school’s competitive Dream Team, which helps to build Habitat homes. She also spent time last summer as an intern.

“I really enjoyed helping people in the community,” she says. “It wasn’t about money. It just felt good to do something that mattered.”

She credits Danielle for giving her con dence.

“She made me feel like I belonged,” Evelyn says. “Construction is maledominated, but more girls are coming in now. Having girls on the team builds trust and adds so much.”

Within the schools, the goal is to prepare students for the world they’re about to enter.

Casey Ferguson, coordinator of CTE and Adult Education for Sumter County, says the results are clear.

“Our students are learning hands-on skills that will help them become employed in a high-skill, high-demand, high-wage career after graduation,” Casey says. “I’m very excited about the great things happening in our trades programs and grateful to the industry partners who help make them successful.”

Lake County shares the same philosophy. Program Specialist Lynnea Strickler says the work is about expanding options.

“Hands-on learning builds con dence, and industry

partnerships give students experiences they can’t get in a classroom,” she says.

Interest is growing rapidly, especially at Leesburg High, where the construction academy has expanded from a small e ort into a competitive program with limited spots.

Students see the value, and employers do too.

At Wildwood Middle High, instructor Jerry Lipham switched from agriculture to construction because he saw a need.

“We do preapprenticeship programs, and this year 24 students are enrolled,” he says.

“They’ll go to a job fair in the spring and potentially get summer work with commercial contractors, HVAC, electricians or plumbers. A lot of them get hired by the same company after graduation.”

What stands out most is the transformation.

“They start with a slab of concrete, frame all the walls, put sheeting on and later come back to see drywall, electrical and plumbing going in,”

Jerry says. “They can say, ‘I did that,’ and not just for a grade. I did that for a community member who’s going to live in this house.”

Wildwood senior Zydarius McCray already has a plan.

“I wanted an early job as soon as I came out of high school,” he says. “My teachers told me how many construction workers are about to retire and how the demand is high.”

“I’m going to use my construction job to pay for lineman school. But construction is a great backup too.”

At The Villages Charter School, instructor Bruce Haberle has

witnessed the same growth. He retired from a long career as a general contractor in New Jersey but found he couldn’t walk away from the industry.

“By senior year, they’re serious,” Bruce says. “If they want to work, we can pretty much guarantee them a job in any trade right now.”

Students like Alistair Clark appreciate the teamwork and accomplishment.

“Every day you feel super accomplished,” he says. “You look back and think, wow, we built that. This whole thing was two days of work.”

Others carry the experience with them long after graduation.

Kaden Perry, a Villages Charter graduate, completed Lake-Sumter State College’s lineman boot camp the same morning he visited the Habitat build site.

“Construction gave me the foundation to move into my dream job,” Kaden says.

“We learned how to frame poles, build power lines, everything.”

With workforce shortages growing and industry partners stepping in, programs like the Youth Construction Academy are making a di erence.

Local CTE pathways and school-based construction academies are giving students real skills, real con dence and a clear line of sight to the jobs waiting for them after graduation.

As Florida continues to face a serious labor shortage in the trades, with tens of thousands of skilled workers nearing retirement, these programs are doing more than preparing the next generation. They’re giving students a place to start, a chance to contribute and the con dence to know they can. The skills matter, but the shift in how students see themselves may matter even more.

And all of them start in the same place: on a job site, learning by doing, building something real.

“You can see the joy on their faces when they discover something they’re good at,” Cindy (of FBA) says.

FLORIDA WORKFORCE SNAPSHOT:

Trades in Demand

A quick look at the construction, skilled labor landscape and growth statistics in Florida, based on current data from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, CareerSource Florida, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook and Associated Builders and Contractors Workforce Development Report.

• Electricians

• Plumbers and pipefitters

• HVAC technicians

• Carpenters and framers

• Heavy equipment operators

• Cement masons and concrete finishers

• Roofers

• Commercial truck drivers

LANAI ENCLOSURES WITH:

Custom Windows and Exterior Design, Inc.

Colton Rands, Design Consultant at Custom Windows and Exterior Design, Inc. Since the early 1990s, Custom Windows has been doing custom lanai enclosures throughout Lake, Sumter and Marion counties.

HOW DO I DESIGN MY LANAI TO BEST SUIT MY LIFESTYLE?

A: Designing your glass lanai enclosure should feel like an extension of how you live--never compromising, always elevating.

The process begins by defining the experience you want the space to deliver. For some homeowners, that means an open, effortless environment designed for entertaining where large expanses of glass blur the line between indoors and out. For others, it’s about creating a tranquil retreat--quiet, protected, and refined--where mornings feel unhurried and evenings unwind with ease.

The most successful lanai designs start with intention, followed by product selection. Expansive views should be treated as a priority, not an afterthought. Thoughtfully designed glass configurations frame the landscape, water or skyline while maximizing natural light and preserving

privacy. Wide openings, clean sightlines and minimal visual interruptions allow the space to feel larger, brighter and more connected to its surroundings. When designed correctly, glass doesn’t dominate the space; it disappears into it. Equally important is the transition between indoor and outdoor living. A well-designed lanai should extend from the home into the enclosure, maintaining visual consistency and architectural harmony. Matching sightlines, aligned mullions, and complementary finishes create a seamless flow that feels intentional and refined. A welcoming connection with outdoor spaces is part of the design plan.

The goal is continuity. The lanai should feel like a purposeful extension of your home, not an addition. Performance is non-negotiable, especially in Florida’s demanding

climate. High-quality glass systems deliver more than beauty. They provide protection from heat, UV exposure, wind and weather while enhancing year-round comfort. Advanced glazing options can reduce glare, improve energy efficiency and maintain interior comfort without sacrificing clarity or aesthetics. The right materials ensure longevity, durability and peace of mind. Flexibility transforms your enclosure from a seasonal space into a lifestyle space. Sliding configurations, large openings and adaptable layouts allow the environment to change instantly-from fully open for gatherings to partially enclosed for breezy afternoons or completely protected when the weather turns.

A PEST-FREE HOME WITH:

Pest Ref Services

Benjamin Williams, owner, was born and raised in Leesburg, Benjamin has lived in Eustis since he was 18 and launched Pest Ref Services in June 2020. The company provides residential and commercial pest control solutions to homes and businesses in Eustis and the surrounding region.

WHAT IS INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT (IPM)?

A: Our approach to pest control is always integrated. That means we don’t immediately reach for products—we start with a thorough inspection. We look for conditions that attract pests, such as overgrown vegetation touching the structure, small openings, clogged gutters, and other environmental factors that allow pests to thrive.

Whenever possible, we correct these issues through minor pruning, sealing gaps, and recommending proper maintenance to discourage pest access. We also take photos so customers receive clear documentation in their service report. If we identify repairs beyond our scope, we note them so homeowners can create an effective action plan.

We’re not a “spray and pray” company. We focus on addressing the root cause of pest problems.

HOW CAN PEST CONTROL BE ECO-FRIENDLY?

A: Eco-friendly pest control means eliminating pests in a way that’s safe for your family, pets, and the environment. We use products that are tough on pests and mindful of our environment, applying them strategically and only where needed to deliver effective results without unnecessary exposure.

Instead of blanket treatments, our approach is based on the specific pests present and the conditions that allow them to thrive. For customers who prefer alternative options, we can also offer natural treatment programs designed to align with their comfort level and property needs.

Call today for your FREE inspection. Same-day and next-day service available. Customers who sign up for mosquito control before March 1, 2026, receive their initial mosquito service FREE.

ARE PESTS MOST ACTIVE AT CERTAIN TIMES OF YEAR?

A: Pest control is essential in Florida because our warm, tropical climate creates ideal conditions for pest activity year-round. It’s not a matter of if pests will become a problem—it’s when. Spring is typically the most active season, making it an ideal time to have your home professionally assessed. By being preventative rather than reactive, we help customers maintain a pest-free home.

HOW CAN I GET STARTED WITH PEST PROTECTION?

A: We begin with a comprehensive inside and outside inspection during your initial visit to identify any existing pest issues or conditions that need correction.

Pest Ref Services offers residential and commercial pest control, termite treatment, and mosquito control. We also provide bundled service options so customers who combine services receive added value and savings.

hen homeowners think about roof problems, they picture dramatic leaks, missing shingles, or storm damage. But most major roofing disasters don’t start with anything dramatic at all. They start small (often invisible from the ground) and quietly grow into costly surprises. At Scott’s Roofing, our family has spent 52 years helping homeowners protect their homes, and we’ve seen firsthand how “silent roof killers” can cause thousands of dollars in damage before anyone realizes there’s an issue. As Tyler Scott often says, “Most expensive roof repairs start as something small you can’t see from the yard.”

One of the biggest hidden threats is minor shingle damage. A single lifted, cracked, or wind-loosened shingle might not seem like much, but it creates a weak spot where water can work its way underneath. Once moisture reaches the decking,

Scott’s Roofing

THE SILENT ROOF KILLER — SMALL ISSUES YOU CAN’T SEE THAT BECOME BIG, EXPENSIVE PROBLEMS

the roof begins to deteriorate from the inside out. By the time a homeowner notices a ceiling stain, the damage underneath is often far more serious.

Another common problem is failing or improperly sealed flashing—the thin metal installed around chimneys, vents, skylights, and roof-to-wall areas. Even a tiny gap or rust spot can redirect water into the structure of the roof. Flashing problems are rarely obvious to homeowners, yet they’re one of the top causes of long-term leaks and wood rot.

We also frequently find issues caused by poor ventilation. When a roof can’t circulate air properly, heat and moisture get trapped in the attic. This accelerates shingle aging, encourages mold, and weakens roof decking over time. None of these problems can be spotted from the street, but they can drastically shorten a roof’s lifespan.

And then there are pipe boots— small rubber seals around plumbing vents that tend to crack from sun exposure. They often fail long before the roof itself does. Replacing a pipe boot is usually a quick fix, yet it remains one of the most common sources of hidden leaks. Scott’s Roofing puts it simply: “A quick inspection now beats a ceiling repair later—every time.”

“MOST EXPENSIVE ROOF REPAIRS START AS SOMETHING SMALL YOU CAN’T SEE FROM THE YARD.”
- TYLER SCOTT

The good news is that these issues are highly preventable. A professional inspection once a year, or after significant weather, can mean the difference between a simple repair and an unexpected renovation. A check-up from an experienced, familyrun company like Scott’s Roofing can save you stress, money, and plenty of headaches down the road.

POOL EXPERTISE WITH:

Wiseman Pools

Shawn Wiseman, owner of Wiseman Pools has been in the industry since 1997. Shawn started Wiseman Pools in 2007 and has built an extensive portfolio of residential and commercial pools in the Central Florida region.

WHAT FEATURES SHOULD I CONSIDER IF I WANT MY POOL TO BE SUITABLE FOR EXERCISE AND PHYSICAL THERAPY IN ADDITION TO ENTERTAINMENT?

A: People want to be able to enjoy their pool, whether their focus is entertainment or exercise.

Because we are a true custom builder, we tailor each pool to fit the homeowner’s needs, yard and budget. We can do a lot with a small space and suit the pool to fit your individual backyard.

When exercise is a main factor, we can either build a full-size standard pool or a pool-spa combo, often called a “spool.”

A standard pool is typically about 15’x30’ but whatever the dimensions, width is usually half the length. Homeowners may want features such as waterfalls or decorative water bowls to add to the aesthetics.

People tend to think of swimming laps for exercise, but an actual lap pool is 75 feet long, so even a half-

lap pool is too large for most yards in subdivisions.

Instead, we can install a swim current generator, which is like a large jet, in one end of a standard pool allowing you to swim laps in a pool of 26 to 28 feet long. Similar to walking or running on a treadmill, the water current speed can be adjusted to accommodate novice or experienced swimmers.

A swim current generator adds to the overall cost, but for someone who really wants to use the pool for exercise it can be worth the extra expense.

A spool is much smaller, often roughly 10’x12’ and would have steps and a bench in the shallow end, which is about 3.5 feet deep. We can incorporate a “sun shelf” or “sun ledge” into the entry way which allows you to sit in a depth of about 6 inches of water. We can also add therapy jets

on the bench just like a typical spa would have.

The other end of the spool called the “well” is usually about 5 feet deep. Some people want to tread water, while others want the water about shoulder height, so we can customize the depth to the homeowner’s request.

Thinking about putting in a pool? We’re happy to talk with you and discuss options.

What began as a small market grew into a lively showcase of more than 75 crafters, artists and small businesses o ering handmade goods, vintage nds, seasonal decor and edible treats. The Festival at Sunsational Farms in Umatilla, set against rolling farmland and The Big Orange, once again proved why it has become one of the area’s most anticipated fall gatherings. Families enjoyed carnival games, bounce houses, the pumpkin patch and the farm’s sprawling playground, while adults browsed vendors and sampled fall-inspired drinks. The festival also featured pet adoptions in honor of Lake & Sumter Style Magazine’s summer feature pushing fur-ever homes for animals housed in local shelters. By day’s end, a couple of cats had found new homes and many families took the rst step by applying to adopt available dogs and puppies.

WARNER FAMILY SPORTS FOUNDATION

C-SUITE SPORTS SNAPSHOT

From a Super Bowl title to youth soccer and business leadership, Martín Gramática lives the lessons sports teach.

orn in Argentina, Martín Gramática never imagined football would shape his professional future. Soccer was his rst love and sports quickly became his focus.

“I always knew I was going to do something in sports,” he says. “It’s my passion.”

Martín didn’t begin kicking a football until his senior year in high school, a late start that led him to Kansas State and, eventually, the NFL. That opportunity paid o during the 2002–03 season, when Martín and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers captured a Super Bowl title, the ultimate achievement for any player.

While the championship stands as a career highlight, Martín says the real impact of sports came much earlier.

“Sports teach you accountability,” he says. “You either make the kick or miss the kick. There’s no excuses.”

Those lessons didn’t fade when his playing days ended.

Today, Martín is the co-founder and CMO of ClearView Imaging Center in The Villages and also coaches youth soccer, staying closely connected to his rst passion. He credits youth and professional sports with shaping how he approaches leadership, pressure

and responsibility. Sports taught him discipline, work ethic, how to function within a team, skills that carried directly into life after the NFL.

“Some companies sometimes try to hire former pro and college athletes because they understand the work ethic,” he says.

With that, Martín believes family and sports are one of the strongest forces for building community. Teams bring together people from di erent backgrounds and experiences, creating bonds that extend well beyond the eld.

“It’s not about your color or your background; a team is like your family,” he says.

That belief is what led Martín to begin working with the Warner Family Foundation, whose mission centers on inspiring youth through sports and strengthening communities. Youth sports, he says, don’t just develop athletes, they help prepare people for adulthood, accountability and connection.

“These lessons players use in sports, they can carry on into real life,” he says.

That philosophy is also re ected in his book, Beyond the Uprights,

which chronicles his life in sports and the lessons learned along the way. The book is available for purchase on Amazon.

Cali is also captain of the lacrosse team.

Both are balancing busy schedules outside of sports. They work, take college classes through full dual enrollment and are preparing for graduation. They will both graduate high school with an associate degree from Lake-Sumter State College.

LEARNING IS KEY

When a student struggles to learn, school becomes frustrating.

Imagine having someone who can make learning fun, whether it’s Science, Math, English, Reading or Writing. That’s where Miss Beez Learning Academy comes into play.

“Miss Bee” is Bianca Armstrong, a teacher and tutor with a natural ability to help students make sense of subjects.

The Florida native and mother of three from Apopka worked as a nurse for 10 years. Bianca loved working in pediatrics but wanted to help children in ways that could impact their future. When she got into education, she knew she’d found her calling.

Bianca realized that many students weren’t getting the

one-on-one help they needed in the classroom, so in 2023, she launched Miss Beez Learning Academy.

She tutors students from kindergarten age to 8th grade. Some students come to her, but most of the time, she meets with them at school after class or at the local library. She plans to have a brick-and-mortar location by August 2026.

“The rst session is a consultation to discover their weaknesses and strengths, where they need help and what they want to accomplish; tutoring starts with the next session,” says Bianca, who works with students from multiple schools in Central Florida.

Sessions are one hour, and can be scheduled weekly, monthly or as needed. Most students see her once or twice a week.

“A lot of kids look for help in school when they don’t get it at home, and if they can’t nd it in school, they give up,” says Bianca. “Everybody’s good at something; I help kids nd their niche and what they’re good at.”

Since kids lose attention quickly if things are boring, Bianca makes learning fun.

“Kids open up because they know it’s a no judgment zone and they trust me,” she says. “I tell them, ‘As long as I’m here you always have somebody to talk to. You don’t have to go at the same pace as others, but as long as you’re moving forward, you’re going to get there.’”

Bianca loves providing that boost students need to succeed.

“I like to be a advocate and build con dent motivation for them,” she says. “My ultimate goal is to get kids prepared for their future — emotionally, mentally, educationally.”

The initial consultation is free. Call or text today to get started.

FORK ON THE ROAD

Elevated, beautifully presented flavors, craft cocktails and a lively dining room define Legacy Restaurant in The Villages.

Branching Out

Bold flavors define Chef David Henry’s menu.

genuine bistro balances elevated cooking with an atmosphere that feels natural.

That approach is at the heart of Root & Branch in Clermont where Chef David Henry delivers balance because he cooks with intention.

The restaurant is well away from the downtown lakefront, so people rarely wander in by chance. Guests go because they mean to, because the food is worth the trip.

A New Jersey native, David grew up in the kitchen with his mother and grandmother while the other kids in his family were o doing di erent things.

“I’ve been doing this over 40 years,” he says. “I love the smell, the taste and just the whole process of putting avors together. It never gets

old and food was an early obsession I never outgrew.”

One of David’s biggest fans is his dad Michael, who comes in often to have a meal and chat with guests.

That kind of support has guided David throughout his career, especially after his mom passed.

“My dad has always been there to support me no matter where I went or what I did, and he loves coming in and meeting people,” he says. “It’s almost as if he works here, too.”

David’s pride when it comes to feeding people well hasn’t dimmed during decades in kitchens, and that sincerity is a big reason why the restaurant feels grounded rather than contrived.

Root & Branch opened in 2019 and came under the ownership of Jason and Casey Baruch a couple of years later. They respect David’s talents and experience by giving him room to cook the way he wants to.

“The owners let me do what I want to do,” David says. “I’ve tried

things. I’ve failed at things, but they trust me.”

Scratch cooking is the directive, so ingredients are all made in-house other than a few condiments.

“High quality, every time,” he says. “That’s the rule.”

His cooking moves between comfort and craft and is shaped in part by learning the Central Florida palate, which leans Southern but has its own quirks. He doesn’t treat comfort food like it has to stay basic, and he brings a method and big avor to it without taking away what people love.

“Nothing plain leaves this kitchen if I can help it,” he says.

You see it in the solid techniques. Chicken stays tender from a buttermilk brine, seafood arrives whole and is hand- lleted, the other proteins are butchered in-house and the produce is hand-picked by trusted purveyors.

The winter menu includes small plates like the signature pork belly “lollipops,” mushroom tart and

fried green tomatoes. There’s bistro onion soup topped with a parmesan crisp, a grilled apple salad, handhelds and atbreads. Pork Wellington, Korean BBQ salmon and bistro meatloaf are just a few of the entrées built on deeper umami avors.

The bar faced a challenge or two early on, but David found the right person in seasoned mixologist Matthew Danchick.

FRIED GREEN TOMATOES

(Serves two)

INGREDIENTS:

1 large green tomato, sliced into five thick slices

5 sliced pickled Fresno chilies

1 c house-made Boursin cheese

2 oz sorghum syrup drizzle

BREADING STATION:

2 c all-purpose flour, seasoned with salt & pepper

5 whole eggs whipped

2 c coarse breadcrumbs or panko

DIRECTIONS:

Coat all slices evenly and fully in the order of flour/egg/panko. Once all are coated thoroughly, deep-fry in oil at 350° until crispy and golden brown. Allow to air-dry, then arrange on plate, top with chilies, house Boursin cheese and Sorghum syrup drizzle.

“Matt is phenomenal,” David says. “He creates great drinks, he is consistent with everything, and he helped take our bar business from average to something special.”

Local draughts are featured alongside an impressive wine list, and the cocktail program isn’t overly complicated, which lets the quality shine. Bourbon barrel drinks, seasonal spritzes and

after-dinner cocktails like the biscotti white Russian are all carefully crafted.

David isn’t trying to reinvent anything. He is trying to make familiar food taste the way he believes it should taste, with layers, seasoning and technique you might not name but immediately feel.

“If I can take a simple idea and turn it into something exceptional,” he says, “the food speaks for itself and the atmosphere does the rest.”

HOUSE BOURSIN CHEESE

INGREDIENTS:

8 oz softened cream cheese

2 oz grated Romano/parmesan cheese

1 oz chopped basil

1 oz chopped oregano

1 oz chopped parsley

2 oz heavy cream

1 oz pinch salt & pepper

DIRECTIONS:

Mix all ingredients together well until creamy.

PEACH & GREEN CHILI JAM

INGREDIENTS:

10 seeded peaches

1 c white granulated sugar

1/2 c brown sugar

1 green poblano chili or jalapeno pepper

DIRECTIONS:

Simmer on medium to low heat until thick and jam like.

PORK BELLY LOLLIPOPS

DIRECTIONS:

Trim and cut whole brined pork belly, leave skin on and then dry smother in Sofrito. Braise for three hours at 375° then cool. Cut into lollipop size bites then deep fry right before serving. Finally, roll in house-made peach & green chili jam, assemble on skewers then serve on greens.

BREAD PUDDING

INGREDIENTS:

1 loaf of Brioche bread ripped in pieces

CUSTARD: 12 eggs

1 qt cream

1 c espresso liqueur

1 tsp vanilla dash salt

DIRECTIONS:

Grease a parchment-lined baking pan, fill with cubed bread, pour custard over and soak all bread. Cover and bake at 350° for 55 minutes, then uncover and bake 10 more minutes or until top is crispy and golden brown.

R&B OG PORK CHOP

INGREDIENTS:

16 oz house-butchered pork chop

1 oz butter

1 pinch salt & pepper

MARINADE:

1 oz olive oil

1 oz ancho chili

1 oz chopped rosemary

1 oz chopped parsley

1/2 oz bourbon and herbs compound butter

DIRECTIONS:

Hard sear both sides of brined and marinated chop to a nice golden crust, then switch to oven pan and bake 8 to 10 minutes at 500° until the center reaches 155°. Pull out of oven and top with pat of compound butter and fresh chopped herbs.

CHEF DAVID’S BRINING RECIPE AND PROCEDURE

INGREDIENTS :

1 qt sugar

3/4 qt salt

1 bunch fresh rosemary

1 dried ancho peppers

10 bay leaves

6 pieces smashed garlic

1/2 c whole peppercorns

1 qt house BBQ rub

DIRECTIONS:

In a bucket, mix ingredients together and add 3 gallons of hot water to dissolve sugar and salt, then add a scoop of ice. Drop in cuts of pork and let them soak for 36 hours.

CHEF’S NOTES:

Brining is one of the easiest ways to keep pork tender because lean cuts dry out quickly without help. A salt brine adds moisture before the meat ever reaches the heat, allowing the muscle bers to relax and take in liquid. That extra moisture protects the pork from tightening and turning tough as it cooks. The salt also seasons the meat evenly and subtly improves its texture, while any aromatics in the brine add a quiet depth without overwhelming the avor. The result is pork that stays juicy and has a more consistent, well-rounded taste.

Seasoned to Perfection

Legacy of excellence is a pursuit, not a destination.

he Suleiman family was determined to build on the long-standing reputation for high quality and elevated service when they took over the Legacy Restaurant at the Nancy Lopez Country Club in 2018. Their goal: to build on that reputation through innovation and daily attention to detail.

Today, the restaurant reflects that effort, shaped by feedback, curiosity and commitment to continual improvement.

Partner Joseph Suleiman says none of that is accidental. His family sees high standards not as a finish line but a daily pursuit.

“We work every day to get to a wow factor,” he says. “If we don’t get it, we keep trying.”

That mindset guides Legacy’s decisions and how the team responds to guests.

“A lot of what we create comes from listening,” he says. “When we’re out on the floor, we notice what guests respond to and how the experience feels to them.”

Joseph extends that mindset to the entire team of more than 300 employees across the company. Joseph’s team sees talent everywhere and refuse to let it sit unused.

“Wasted talent is a shame,” Joseph says. “If someone brings passion or a skill to the table, we want to give them room to use it. That’s how people grow, and how the restaurant grows with them.”

Ownership puts that philosophy into practice by giving his team room to shine.

Manager Aubryhanna Alvarez leads the wine, spirits and mixology classes, and Chef Maurice Bichette teaches the weekly cooking class.

Chef Alex Cheskey adds his own perspective once a month when he steps in as a featured chef.

Catering and events director Victoria Jebian continues expanding Legacy’s reach, from intimate dinners to large-scale community events like The Villages “Prom.”

The Legacy teams also partners with outside talent, including artist Kathy Hodge Rolfes, who hosts the Thursday paint-and-sip.

“There’s no limit,” Joseph says. “We’re building a company that reaches out.”

Legacy’s long-standing reputation matters, but its evolution keeps it relevant. The restaurant

staff listens, adapts and pushes forward every day.

When Style ’s Chief Photographer Nicole and I got the assignment, we joked about skipping breakfast and I dug out my loosest yoga pants. After all, we are both professionals and needed to prepare.

“IF SOMEONE BRINGS PASSION OR A SKILL TO THE TABLE, WE WANT TO GIVE THEM ROOM TO USE IT.”
- JOSEPH SULEIMAN

Normally we get a few lookie-loos, but this was full-on, enthusiastic hovering by lunching guests. The table next to us couldn’t stop watching and one gentleman volunteered to “help” if we needed it.

Victoria brought out guest favorites, starting with butter-knife tender and perfectly seasoned Chateaubriand glossed with port wine reduction. Pan-seared, tangy miso-marinated Chilean sea

bass served over rich parmesan risotto followed.

My favorite: the pear sacchettini, little pear-and-ricotta parcels folded into Marsala-braised beef. The grouper and lobster Oscar, a blackened Florida filet crowned with cold-water lobster, asparagus and hollandaise, was a modern twist on a classic.

The backlit bar is the centerpiece of the main dining room and the cocktail program is just as impressive. The smoked old fashioned stole the show and Nicole happily claimed the tiramisu dessert martini, which she loved.

As we worked our way through the spread, I noticed there was usually a manager speaking to a table and interacting on a firstname basis. Another helped the bartender fill the ice bin, then moved to the door to greet guests. Legacy managers don’t administer directives from a hidden office or a timeshare in the Bahamas. They’re on the floor and in the trenches with the team.

Speaking with Joseph made it clear how much he genuinely cares about the overall mission.

“We want this to be the best place to work and the best place to dine,” he says. “If our staff feels valued and our guests feel cared for, we’re on the right path.”

Historic lakeside location wrapped in Southern hospitality.

The Rose Plantation in Fruitland Park brings refined, unfussy dining to a restored 1917 lakefront estate where mismatched china, linen-topped tables and relaxed, attentive service greet guests as if welcoming them home. Chef Jorge’s detailed menu includes a butter maple–glazed pork chop, whipped feta with warm focaccia, pappardelle mushroom marsala and blackened redfish finished with a seafood bisque. Guests can dine indoors amid eclectic charm or outdoors beneath moss-draped oaks in a setting suited for date nights, celebrations and themed gatherings like murder mystery dinners. A recent renovation ensures that this historic local favorite continues to exude grace and warmth for years to come. A full bar is available, reservations are recommended and a dress code, ranging from relaxed daytime to more formal evening wear for dinner, is strongly encouraged.

HIGH SPIRITS

The Citrus Sky Bar offers plenty of room with a view.

nally got a chance to visit the rooftop bar at The Citrus Hotel in Tavares, a spot my colleagues have raved about since it opened last year.

The mix of sky, color and water felt escapist, like I could have been in Baja, Costa Rica or Miami.

That’s exactly what owner David Perry was aiming for when he designed the bar.

“We really wanted to create something unique for the area,” he says. “When you get up to the Citrus Sky Bar, it just has that South Florida rooftop vibe, like you’ve stepped into a di erent world.”

The bright hues, palms and string lights add to that atmosphere. And a front row seat to Lake Dora and America’s Seaplane City doesn’t hurt.

“Sometimes the seaplanes come in so close you can see the pilot’s face,” David says. “Guests get such a kick out of that because it’s something you don’t experience anywhere else locally.”

The weather occasionally presents

challenges, but the whole place clicks when it cooperates.

“The drone show was incredible from the rooftop as the weather was perfect that day, and even though it rained during the Fourth of July reworks, people still stayed to watch because they had a place to grab a cocktail.”

David wanted the drink menu to feel as intentional as the space, so they built a full martini program and keep re ning it, rounding it out with frozen and playful cocktails that match the laid-back atmosphere.

For guests of the boutique hotel, the rooftop can anchor an easy date night with dinner near Ruby Street, sunset drinks and an elevator ride home.

Locals can cap a waterfront bar crawl with a view that feels like a holiday.

David is happy to be part of a larger shift downtown.

“We believe in this downtown and the direction it’s going,” he says. “The waterfront district is truly special and we’re excited to be part of its growth.”

A relationship status that remains uncomplicated.

can tell Valentine’s Day is approaching because the stores are plastered in hearts, restaurants are on red alert and my algorithm is ooding me with think pieces about the state of the single woman.

Perhaps my internet search history for solo air travel and bulk kitty litter ratted me out.

Survey after survey shows that women across all age groups, divorced or never married, aren’t treating marriage as the default nish line anymore. We’re not rejecting men. We’re reexamining the assumption that a partnered life is the only legitimate one.

Personally, I don’t think about it much. I mostly go about my day, enjoying the small freedoms that come with autonomy. If I meet our deadlines and mom is OK, the rest of my time is spent hiking the Ocala National Forest or obsessing over my novel.

It’s been eight years since my last serious relationship, and the breakup was brutal. I decided to take time o to re ect and focus on me, and eventually the years passed and I’ve stayed single, without some grand plan.

It happened unintentionally over time, and it turns out it works. It’s not a manifesto. It’s simply an acknowledgment that a life, as it already exists, might already be enough.

Retiring to my very real Golden Girl Ranch collective feels normal to me now. What started as a joke became a backup plan and now is a viable strategy for the future.

The internet has de nitely formed opinions about my lifestyle. A corner of the manosphere would gladly see me sent o to the “colonies” in a stage production of The Handmaid’s Tale.

I didn’t realize living peacefully and independently was suddenly

destabilizing the ecosystem, or frankly anyone else’s concern. But here we are.

My bestie Melissa is just as boycrazy as I am, but she is on a mission to retire, which takes focus and energy. My friend Autumn dates occasionally but doesn’t feel compelled to install the Bumble app on her phone.

We joke about our Sundays, lounging in solitude, streaming something mindless, staying in our pajamas.

This year Valentine’s Day lands on a Saturday, which means I’ll be bartending. That’s more money toward a trip to Europe in the summer for my 60th. Maybe I’ll meet the man of my dreams on the plane, or over a pint in a London pub. Or maybe not.

Either way, my cat Rocky will be waiting for my return, and that’s my life for now.
