From My Perspective
What I’ve learned firsthand about the dedication behind every transaction.
here is something uniquely powerful about real estate. It is more than contracts, negotiations and closings. It is about people, their stories and the milestones that shape their lives. As both a real estate agent and the owner of Akers Media Group, I have the privilege of experiencing this industry from two perspectives and I can say with certainty that it is not an easy profession. It requires resilience, adaptability and a genuine commitment to serving others. But despite the challenges, it is one of the most rewarding careers when you are able to help someone achieve the dream of homeownership.
This month, Style Magazine is proud to highlight the strength and dedication of our local real estate community. From seasoned professionals to rising stars, the individuals featured in this issue represent the very best of what our region has to o er. Their work goes far beyond transactions. They are advisors, problem-solvers and trusted partners guiding clients through some of the most important decisions of their lives.
Our Top Producers list recognizes those who have demonstrated
exceptional performance and consistency in an ever-changing market. Their success is not by chance. It is earned through hard work, long hours and an unwavering commitment to their clients.
We are also honored to celebrate this year’s Realtor of the Year, Geo rey Chernault. Geo rey exempli es professionalism, integrity and leadership within the industry. His dedication to both his clients and his peers makes him a standout in our community and a deserving recipient of this recognition.
Real estate is not just about buying and selling homes. It is about building relationships, strengthening communities and creating opportunities for families to thrive. I am continually inspired by the passion and perseverance of those in this industry and proud to share their stories with you.
Here’s to the professionals who make it all possible and to the dream of homeownership that continues to bring us together.

moking (including secondhand smoke and smokeless tobacco, sometimes called “chewing tobacco” or “snuff”) is the largest risk factor for getting head and neck cancer. And people who use both tobacco and alcohol are many times more likely to get head and neck cancer than people with neither habit. Research has also shown that continued smoking by a patient with head and neck cancer may reduce the effectiveness of treatment and increase the chance of a second primary cancer.
RBOI is a member of the Tobacco Free Florida Partnership of Marion County. We support efforts to create tobaccofree environments and smoking cessation and prevention programs, especially those for our youth. Connection: Get Vaccinated!
Human papillomavirus (HPV), the most common sexually transmitted virus in the US, has played an increasing role in head and neck cancers, especially oropharyngeal cancers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HPV is thought to cause 60% to 70% of oropharyngeal cancers in the US.
The CDC recommends HPV vaccination for 11- to 12-year-olds, and for everyone through age 26 who has not been vaccinated. Adults age 27 through 45 are encouraged to speak with their doctor about their risk of HPV infection and the possible benefits of vaccination.

How Does Radiation Treat Head and Neck Cancer?
Radiation therapy can be used to treat laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers in several ways:
• As the main treatment for some early stage cancers. If the tumor is small, radiation can often destroy it without the need for surgery.
• To treat patients too sick for surgery
• To destroy small areas of cancer that might remain after surgery
• To treat returning cancer (recurrence)

• To ease symptoms of advanced laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer, such as pain, bleeding, trouble swallowing, and problems caused when cancer spreads to the bones, as part of palliative care.
Before beginning radiation therapy for any type of head and neck cancer, see an oncologic dentist or oral oncologist. Damaged teeth may need to be removed.

MAKING THE CASE:
Commissioner Kirby Smith and County Manager Jennifer Barker recently took the priorities of Lake County leaders to Tallahassee and met with legislators during the 2026 session. The visit coordinated with Langley Consulting Group and Gray Robinson focused on funding and policy support for projects including the Neighborhood Lakes Gateway Center, Judicial Center expansion and major road improvements. O cials say face-to-face advocacy remains essential to keeping local needs front and center.
WRITING THROUGH FIRE: Lake County Communications Manager Je Foley is no stranger to writing through adversity. After completing his eight-book devotional series “Strength For The Journey” while undergoing cancer treatment, Foley is turning the page with his debut novel, “What Staying Looks Like.” The powerful story follows a man rebuilding his life after personal and professional loss, exploring faith, endurance and identity with emotional depth and honesty. The book is available on Amazon with a sequel already in the works.
BREWING OPPORTUNITY: Clermont city leaders, including Mayor Tim Murry, joined families, sponsors and supporters to celebrate the ribbon cutting and grand opening of the Central Florida Dreamplex Friendly Grounds Café. Now open at The Friendship Place, the café o ers far more than co ee and refreshments. The café provides hands-on vocational training for individuals with disabilities, helping build con dence, independence and real-world job skills in a welcoming, inclusive environment. Every purchase also helps fund Dreamplex programs while creating opportunities for clients to connect and succeed.
ROADSIDE CHEER: Ever wonder what’s popping up along Florida’s backroads each spring? Those cheerful bursts of pinks, purples and soft blues are most likely annual phlox, a roadside favorite that thrives in sunny, open spaces. Blooming from March through May, it often appears in dense, low patches that turn highways and country roads into unexpected ribbons of color. It’s a small, eeting reminder that spring has o cially made itself at home in Central Florida.

FAITH & FAMILY: Easter (which falls on April 5) is a beautiful time to re ect on faith, celebrate hope and gather with the people who matter most. For many families, the day begins with church services that honor the meaning of the resurrection, followed by meals shared around crowded tables and laughter- lled egg hunts for the kids. Whether it’s dressing in spring colors, sharing favorite family recipes or simply slowing down to be together, Easter is about gratitude, love and the joy of new beginnings.

How I became interested in ballet: When I was in kindergarten, my mom and I went to the ballet. We saw Swan Lake and that’s all I dreamt about. I kept thinking, ‘I just want to be that. I want to do whatever that is.’”
My inspiration for Mount Dora School of Ballet: and I moved to this area around the same time after having retired from teaching. The Orlando Ballet offered us teaching positions. We didn’t want to be driving that far at night, so we met each other by coincidence. We went to lunch and in talking, decided we were both very fortunate to have such wonderful training and teaching careers behind us that it would be exciting to have a school of that caliber here.
At my school: variations, contemporary, character dance, just all that’s related to classical ballet.
A meaningful moment: years ago, I coached part of Swan Lake to my school. I was so driven with it, and it was moving to see things come full circle from me having gone to that ballet as a child, having practiced

Classes that stretched my knowledge: AICE Global Perspectives and AICE European History challenged me the most and ended up being the most rewarding. Both classes required a lot of discipline, research and critical thinking. They pushed me to look beyond right and wrong answers and really analyze information from multiple perspectives.
The assist that mattered most: My teacher Mrs. Weber had a huge impact on how I think and learn. She taught me how to separate personal opinions from research and evaluate information based on accuracy and reliability.
Balancing act: Being a student/athlete taught me how to manage my time and stay focused. Academics always come rst, and my basketball coach, Cameron Ware, strongly supports that. If we needed tutoring, help with assignments or time for school commitments, he made sure we had it.
Basketball taught me: Discipline and consistency. I wasn’t naturally great when I started, but I showed up every day, put in the work and trusted the process. That same mindset applies to academics and life. E ort matters.
Pushing through the hard days: On days when motivation is low, I rely on discipline and routine. I remind myself of my long-term goals and trust that the work I’m putting in will pay o .
Future plans: I plan to study astronomy and astrophysics at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The school’s strong STEM focus and academic culture align perfectly with my goals, and seeing my older brother thrive there made it feel like the right t.
Home court advantage: My parents have always been my biggest supporters. They show up to every game, help me stay focused and remind me to believe in myself, even when things feel overwhelming.
Words to live by: Motivation comes and goes, but discipline is what carries you forward. Show up, give your best e ort and trust the process.

ADVANCED SHOULDER AND ORTHOPEDIC HEALTH
At AOI, our team is committed to evidence-based, patient-focused care.
hen it comes to advanced orthopedic care, Dr. Alfred J. Cook Jr. has earned a reputation as one of the most trusted names in shoulder surgery, sports medicine and joint reconstruction. As founder of the Advanced Orthopedics Institute in The Villages, he leads a practice built on a deeply personal commitment to restoring mobility to each individual patient who comes through the door.
Through his experience and attention to detail, Dr. Cook connects a solution to his patients to perhaps smooth out a golf swing, tend to a garden or lift a grandchild with ease. These specifics guide the conversations and the care he delivers. His manner is calm and collaborative, and patients often say they feel understood before a plan is even made. That focus on real life is what shapes his entire practice.
A LEADER IN ADVANCED SHOULDER SURGERY
Dr. Cook is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who has dedicated more than two decades to shoulder reconstruction, cartilage regeneration and advanced joint replacement. His work has made him one of the region’s most respected specialists in complex shoulder cases, including the reverse total shoulder procedure that has changed outcomes for many older adults who believed they had run out of options.
REVERSE TOTAL SHOULDER ARTHROPLASTY
Among Dr. Cook’s specialties, reverse total shoulder arthroplasty is one of the most transformative. The procedure was developed for patients with severe rotator cuff damage or advanced arthritis that has made traditional shoulder replacement ineffective. By reversing the ball and socket orientation of the joint, the surgery allows the deltoid muscle to power the arm when the rotator cuff can no longer perform that function.
COMPREHENSIVE ORTHOPEDIC SERVICES
Advanced Orthopedics Institute provides a full range of orthopedic treatments designed to restore mobility, reduce pain and help patients return to the activities they enjoy. From advanced surgical
complex fractures, chronic pain or arthritis that has not responded to therapy or injections. Dr. Cook evaluates each shoulder carefully and explains whether an anatomic replacement or a reverse approach is the best option. He is known for taking time to ensure patients understand the process.
Recovery varies, but most patients begin gentle motion within weeks and progress through a structured rehabilitation plan. The physical

provides comprehensive orthopedic care that includes arthroscopic procedures, sports medicine, fracture management, total joint evaluations and general orthopedic services. Diagnostic radiology is available on site, which allows for faster assessments and more efficient treatment planning. Every evaluation focuses on the individual, and conservative treatments are always explored when appropriate. This may include physical therapy, medication or activity changes for patients who can improve without surgery.
A TEAM DEDICATED TO PATIENT-CENTERED CARE
At Advanced Orthopedics Institute, Dr. Cook leads a skilled team that reflects his patient-first philosophy. The environment is calm, efficient and grounded in compassion. Every patient is greeted with care and every question is answered with clarity. The staff includes experienced clinicians, surgical support specialists and physical therapy professionals who work together to create a seamless experience from first appointment through rehabilitation.
Nurse Practitioner Kim Hatcher is a key part of the surgical and clinical team. She began her career as a
licensed practical nurse, became a registered nurse and later earned her graduate training as a nurse practitioner. Her background in orthopedics and critical care gives her a strong foundation for assisting in surgeries and guiding patients through recovery. Kim’s steady presence and clear communication help support patients through each phase of treatment.
Physical therapist Sofia Suarez adds another essential dimension to the practice. She works closely with each patient to rebuild strength and mobility with targeted exercises and customized plans that complement Dr. Cook’s surgical expertise. Her role ensures that patients do not simply heal but regain confidence in how they move and live.
A CULTURE OF EXCELLENCE
What sets Advanced Orthopedics Institute apart is the culture Dr. Cook has shaped over time, one grounded in respect, empathy and the belief that patients deserve both excellent outcomes and a positive experience. Many who come in are older adults determined to stay active, and the team understands those goals, supporting

A THAT SPEAKS
PASSION AND ADVOCACY OF MULTIGENERATIONAL REALTOR®
GEOFFREY CHERNAULT SETS HIM APART.
Real estate isn’t just a career for Geoffrey Chernault, it’s his passion.
He’s dedicated to the profession and commits himself to community service and to doing what’s right for clients and colleagues alike.
His dedication recently earned him the honor of being named 2025’s Realtor® of the Year by the Realtors® Association of Lake and Sumter Counties, a recognition that celebrates leadership, advocacy and community involvement in addition to sales performance.
“Realtor® of the Year is not necessarily based solely on production. It’s mainly your community involvement, what you do for your fellow Realtors®, helping out with very different things like political advocacy and so much more,” Geoffrey says.
The award places him among the most respected professionals in an association of roughly 2,800 agents.
“I was incredibly honored to be nominated,” he says. “It is quite an honor and I’m humbled to win it. I didn’t know that I would win it until that day when they announced it. It was very, very surreal and very, very nice and exciting to be recognized for my efforts.”

A TRADITION
Real estate has long been part of life for Geo rey, who describes himself as a multigenerational Realtor®, following in the footsteps of his parents and even his grandmother.
“My parents were both educators and then while they were teaching school, they became real estate agents and they did it part time,” he says. “When they retired from education, they went full-time.”
His mother worked with a Century 21 o ce and his father worked with an ERA o ce in Lake County. His grandmother was also in the business decades earlier in Virginia.
BUILDING A
Once in Florida, Geo rey worked with Massey Services, learning the area from the ground up, sometimes literally.
“You want to learn how everything works down in the area where everything is,” he says. “I’ve been in and under just about every building in Lake County.”
Eventually, he joined a local brokerage and discovered real estate was where he wanted to be. After gaining experience, he earned his broker license and launched Right Realty Connection
ADVOCACY AND
Despite that family in uence, Geo rey did not initially plan to follow the same path.
“I didn’t really have the edge to get into real estate,” he says. “I saw how hard it was and all the time that they had to put into it and I was like, ‘I’m going to try the corporate world.”’
He worked for several organizations, including a title company and a regional hospital system in Virginia, before relocating to Florida in 2011 to be closer to his parents after both experienced serious health issues.
“I left a job that I loved and decided to move down here to get close to my parents,” Geo rey says.
“NOTHING IS LIKE SEEING THE SMILE ON PEOPLE’S FACES WHEN YOU HAND OVER THEIR KEYS AND YOU GET TO BE WITH THEM AT THE START THAT NEXT JOURNEY,” GEOFFREY SAYS.
“THERE’S NO GREATER RUSH THAN WITNESSING THAT.”
in 2018. Today, the brokerage has multiple o ces across Lake County and into Volusia County.
“I’ve got wonderful agents and I’m blessed to be doing this,” he says.
Geo rey continues to sell property but spends much of his time mentoring agents and managing the company.
“I love helping my agents get to the next level,” he says. “I help new agents learn the business and get set up for success, then they take that and help more people.”
Geo rey’s in uence extends well beyond transactions. He served as the 2024 president of the Realtor® Association of Lake and Sumter Counties and sits on the board of Stellar MLS, the third largest multiple listing service in the country.
He has also been deeply involved in advocacy work supporting homeowners and property rights.
“We spend a lot of time in the public policy arena advocating for homeowners,” he says.
His e orts have included support for eliminating Florida’s business rent tax and pushing for insurance reform and a ordable housing initiatives. He also participates in community projects such as waterway cleanups and charitable fundraising.
“I put my money where my mouth is so to speak by putting money back into those organizations, many times out of my own pocket,” he says.
While Geo rey values leadership and advocacy, he says the most meaningful part of his career remains helping people nd homes and move into new stages of life.
“Nothing is like seeing the smile on people’s faces when you hand over their keys and you get to be with them at the start that next journey,” he says. “There’s no greater rush than witnessing that.”
THE HELPING OTHERS OF A COMMITMENT TO
He works with a wide range of clients, from rst-time buyers to retirees downsizing and luxury home buyers.
“I just love helping people,” he says. “I love everything from your new buyer that has never bought anything to helping people downsize into something that’s more manageable for them all the way up to people in the market for luxury homes.”
“I LOVE HELPING MY AGENTS GET TO THE NEXT LEVEL,” GEOFFREY SAYS. “I HELP NEW AGENTS LEARN THE BUSINESS AND GET SET UP FOR SUCCESS, THEN THEY TAKE THAT AND HELP MORE PEOPLE.”
Geoffrey says being named Realtor® of the Year reflects his commitment to professionalism and ethical standards, values he hopes will always define his career.
“If you ask anybody who knows me well, they’ll tell you they know that I’m all about doing the right thing,” he says.
“That is the reputation I have and the reputation I will continue to have always.”
For Geoffrey, the award is not a finish line but a reminder of why he chose the profession in the first place.
“My great love is real estate,” he says. “I’ve lived in it for a number of years now and I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

COLDWELL BANKER VANGUARD LIFESTYLE
Where Style Meets Service and Dreams Come True!
One of Lake County’s real estate power couples has upped their game yet again, and customers are reaping the rewards.
Bethany Burge-Bosbous and Joe Bosbous are multi-million-dollar producers who owned Right Realty Connection in Leesburg since 2021. Last September the husband-and-wife team sold their vestar rated brokerage to Coldwell Banker Vanguard Lifestyle.
Bethany and Joe own the blue building across the street from Venetian Gardens, so their o ce location is the same, but they now operate as The Bosbous Group for Coldwell Banker Vanguard Lifestyle.
This strategic decision was all about their customers.
“We now have a marketing team and stateof-the-art technologies that provide wider access and unparalleled industry resources that simply weren't available to us as an independent brokerage,” says Bethany. “Having an entire team has catapulted us into excellence by giving us access to so many
programs that make the sales process better for our customers.”
hasn’t changed.
of us, you get both of us; we're a BOGO!” says Bethany.
He served in the Coast Guard almost seven years. He then worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons for 26 years. He retired as a lieutenant in September of 2021. His 33 years of government service are a huge plus for customers.
active in real estate since 1998, and is a Ramsey® Trusted Pro. She is a broker and holds multiple designations from the National Association of REALTORS®, including ABR, CRB, MRP, C2EX and SRES.
Joe specialize in residential properties, helping to streamline the process as much as possible for both buyers and sellers.
“Whether they are rst-time homebuyers, empty nesters, or military families relocating, we really cater to Lake and Sumter County customers,” says Bethany.

Natalie
Making Homeownership Accessible ARROWSMITH
Owning a home is a major part of the American Dream.
Natalie Arrowsmith is determined to help people achieve that dream. During her 20 years in real estate, Natalie has made this happen again and again, but it never gets old.
“I love my profession, what it can do for families and how it can provide security,” says Natalie, who launched Arrowsmith Realty in 2010.
A fourth generation Apopkan, Natalie was just 20 when she bought her rst house.
“My dad knew the importance of owning your own home and told me to buy,” says Natalie, who became inspired to help others nd that same sense of satisfaction.
In the early 2000s, while living in North Carolina, Natalie had the opportunity to work in a real estate company and earned her broker’s license in 2005, a state license she holds to this day.
“It was absolutely the best decision I ever made,” she says.
Tough times provide powerful lessons and Natalie experienced this rsthand. She moved back to Florida in 2007 just before the recession struck.
Grateful to be back in her home state, Natalie immersed herself in the real estate industry with a mission of helping people become homeowners. Having lost everything during the recession and then regained it, she fully understands the joy of having a cherished place to call home.
She was recently elected to serve on the board of directors of the REALTORS® Association of Lake and Sumter Counties (RALSC). She was president of the Orlando Regional REALTOR® Association (ORRA), served as District 12 Vice President for Florida REALTORS®, and sat on the board of directors for the National Association of REALTORS®. She’s currently the chair for the REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC), which advocates for private property rights, home ownership and works with the legislature on issues important to homeowners.
“We’re not just selling houses, we’re out there trying to help our communities, and giving back,” says Natalie.
With a team of six agents, Arrowsmith Realty is a boutique brokerage committed to serving buyers and sellers across Central Florida.
“We believe every person has the right to own a home,” says Natalie. “We don’t change our approach on how we handle transactions depending on the price point. It’s more about the relationship than the transaction.”
With o ces in Mount Dora and Apopka, Arrowsmith Realty handles properties at all price points—from residential to commercial to vacant land.
Real estate is personal — and at Morris Realty, we believe it should feel that way. With a close-knit team of fewer than 15 agents, who are top producers, we o er a hands-on approach you won’t nd at larger rms. When you work with us, you’re not passed from person to person — you’re guided by professionals who know your name, understand your goals and are genuinely invested in your success.

COOK
Service-oriented is the best way to describe Kimberly Cook.
Before becoming a licensed REALTOR®, she served in the Navy, earned her bachelor’s degree in aviation management, worked in the airline industry and then took an administrative position with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. She was a literary coordinator and taught inmates at Coleman Federal Prison for almost 25 years.
Eager to nd a di erent way to help people, Kimberly got her real estate license in 2020 and has been serving her customers and community ever since.
“Last year was probably my most successful year yet even though the market trended downward,” says Kimberly.
She holds the designations At Home With Diversity®, Graduate, REALTOR® Institute, Military Relocation
Professional, and takes pride in helping fellow veterans.
Kimberly is on the board of directors at the REALTORS® Association of Lake and Sumter Counties (RALSC).
Kimberly is also active in the association’s leadership development and community awareness programs.
Kimberly is all about practical ways to make a di erence, whether she’s collecting for local food banks or teaching self-defense classes to fellow real estate agents. (She has her black belt in martial arts.)
She recently participated in Great American REALTOR® Days (GARD) in Tallahassee with a group of REALTORS® from RALSC.
“We were there to discuss issues that impact the real estate industry, such as insurance and HOA association rules,”
says Kimberly. “We actually got to sit on a committee formed to come up with legislation.”
Kimberly has called Florida home since 1992. She and her husband Rusty live in Lake County on the Minneola Chain of Lakes and love being on the water. Their children, Dylan and Lea, are grown.
In addition to boating, reading, cross stitch, and puzzles, travel is one of Kimberly’s major passions.
“We usually travel with family at least once a year,” she says. “Last year we were in Hawaii. This
spring Rusty and I are among 11 family members from North America going to Australia. We’ll be celebrating my aunt’s birthday and visiting the grave of my grandfather who served in the Australian Air Force.”
As soon as she returns home, Kimberly will be back to serving her real estate customers, patiently walking them through each step of the process.
“The best part of being a REALTOR® is helping people nd what they’re looking for,” she says.

My athletic journey: It started with dance when I was 2. When my family and I moved to Orlando I took part in a mini cheer camp and loved it. I made the transition from dance to cheer when I was 7.
Greatest sports achievement: Being a 3-time Pop Warner All-American Scholar with the Clermont Knights and receiving the Presidential Scholarship. It con rmed to me that my work academically and athletically is truly paying o and does not go unnoticed.
I love: Getting to showcase my talents to a crowd of people. Competing gives me the opportunity to express all of the dedication and hard work that goes into the sport. When things start to get tough, I remind myself to nish competing and focus on hitting the next stunt, lift or play with extreme precision.
Goals: To help East Ridge win a state championship, whether in cheerleading, weightlifting, ag football or tennis.
Pre-game rituals: I call my dad to discuss the goals I have set for the day and pray with my team.

Greatest sports achievement: Getting the opportunity to play
play with my best friends. My teammates keep me motivated to always leave it all on the eld.
I am committed as a pitcher to play college baseball at Daytona State College after high school and I am working hard to make sure that I make a spot on the starting roster when I am a freshman.
Coach who made a di erence: Dave Westgate has been a coach of mine since I was 13 years old. He is always pushing me to be the best I can be. I feel grateful that I get to nish out my high school career with him in the dugout.
Position: Starting centerfielder and southpaw pitcher
Class: Senior
Head Coach Matulia has also set an expectation for our school and our team which wasn’t there before and that expectation has set the tone for our baseball program to continue to grow and improve. Our record the last two seasons show that improvement.
Pre-game rituals: I have a stretching routine that I like to do and my team as a whole likes to listen to music in our locker room to get hyped up before a game.
For fun: I like to play pickleball with my friends and go to the gym.
My biggest inspiration: I would say my dad because he is always pushing me to do my best and to get better.
My message: Leadership is an extremely important part of being a senior baseball player at Mount Dora. It is important that we set the example for the younger guys so that they understand how important it is to give back to your community and how much of a brotherhood baseball is in our program.

T GOING
FOR
he New Age Runners AAU track program was founded three years ago when a local mom stepped up to create opportunities for her children and other youngsters who love to run.
“We didn’t have a community running program here for the kids,” founder and head coach Alonti
Richardson says. “The only place close was in Wildwood so I told Coach Tucker with FCA that I really wanted to start my own team.”
New Age Runners has grown into a structured program of 20 athletes ages 5 to 14.
“It all boils down to being patient,” Alonti says. “In order for these
kids to be good, they have to start somewhere. The best place to start is at ve and six years old because you can mold them into what they need to be to succeed.”
Alonti, who ran track at BethuneCookman University, brings college experience to the program. Assistant Coach Doug Orr adds years of
coaching youth and speed training from his football background, while Assistant Coach Shaun Robertson brings another competitor to the team. The coaching sta wouldn’t be complete without Team Moms Quahsay Darisaw and Tatiana Robertson, because it takes a village to prepare these kids for competition.
“It’s not about just winning,” Doug says. “It’s about what you do with your time. Each time you run, you want a better time. You want progression.”
That focus on growth is evident in athletes like Josiah, one of the younger runners in the program. He began the season near the bottom of the standings in his age group but nished the year earning medals.
“That’s the progress we want to see,” Doug says.
Discipline is central to the organization’s identity. Coaches regularly remind athletes that preparation at practice determines performance at meets.
“When you get to these meets, they’re not giving second chances,” Alonti says. “If you run out of your lane, you’re disquali ed. So if you’re not listening at practice, there’s no way you’re going to listen at a meet.”
New Age Runners practices primarily at Ski Beach at Venetian Gardens in Leesburg and at Leesburg High School when facilities are available. Lack of hosting facilities necessitates that meets are held away from home.
New Age Runners was recently recognized as an o cial 501(c)(3) nonpro t organization and is now seeking sponsors, equipment donations and most importantly, a dedicated facility within Lake County for practices.
“Right now, we buy most of it out of pocket because we are all in for these kids,” Shaun says. “We have a lot of good support from parents, but we would really love to see our community behind us.”
Shaun says he’s seen a noticeable di erence in his own daughter, Lyric.
“She started to make friends and build that work ethic,” he says. “She’d ask me why we weren’t practicing every day. She’s working harder and harder at it.”
Quahsay has also seen growth in her son.
“For Josiah, he is very quiet and shy,” she says. “Being on the track team has brought him out of his shell. He was really nervous, but running with the older kids helped him. Now he’s medaling.”
When asked about goals for the upcoming season, there was a clear consensus among the athletes to run “super fast.”

WEIGHT LOSS WITHOUT ALL THE MYSTERY
FOR BOTH FEMALES & MALES
Looking and feeling like a million dollars isn’t as much as you would think.
e are excited to announce the opening of a weight loss clinic in the practice central Florida has trusted for almost 50 years and is still going strong. You cannot watch TV these days without seeing an ad for the new class of “miracle weight loss drugs.” The obvious advantages of the GLP class of drugs for appropriately selected patients can be quite astounding.
But how do I get a prescription? Is is right for me? Is this a compounded version that is not effective or dangerous due to impurities? Well . . .
Having used GLP’s to lose 25 lbs. in about 12 weeks (about 3 months), Dr. Douglas Mo ett, of OB/GYN Associates, has had endless requests to help with obtaining quality weight loss medications and daily oversight. Our practice has a reputation for doing what we promise and have decided to share the steps with patients.
So along with his son-in-law, Dr. Anthony Fahsholtz D.C., of Chiropractic Center of Central Florida
“Our patients will typically lose 15 to 20 lbs. in the first couple of months and have the option to continue their treatment until their goal is achieved.”
-Douglas H. Moffett,
we have decided to launch a joint venture with medical oversight and expert dietary instructions to make true weight loss attainable out of their shared Villages o ce.
Most importantly, the medicine our patients will use is obtained direct to consumers from the FDA-approved and regulated manufacturers. No mark ups and no “knock o ” locally compounded copies with impurities or lack of potency that frustrate unsuccessful users.
Included in our program will be medicine sent directly to the patient who we will then give instructions on how to use, manage dosing of the medicine and counseling on important dietary concerns needed with such a program. Our patients will typically lose 15 to 20 lbs. in the rst couple of months and then with our re llable prescriptions, have the option to continue their treatment until their goal is achieved once the program has been mastered.
Included with the 8-week initial startup fee patients will receive:
• Initial screening visit for appropriate selection of candidates to use the medicine.
• The first (12-16 weeks) of a refillable prescription of FDA-approved GLP’s from the USA based company.
• Counseling on dietary optimization to enhance health and wellness while losing weight.
• Follow-up weigh-in sessions with dietary and dosing modification instruction.
• Confidence while working with a PHYSICIAN not just a “wellness expert”.
• Ability to continue the program if patients want to safely refill the prescription at the company’s direct consumer pricing.

ost people know him simply as “Ponder,” the name you’ll hear called out at events and in kitchens across the Central Florida catering scene. It suits a man shaped by experience.
Raised in Miami by strong women and trained both at home and through formal culinary programs, personal chef and special events caterer Michael Ponder Jr. serves everything from private dinners to large civic gatherings. His approach to food centers on authenticity and community, with the table as the place people come together.
“I’m just a kid from Miami,” he says. “And I love the life I’ve created here.”
He learned to cook standing beside his grandmother, Mary Culpepper, and his mother, Lasharn Barnes, watching closely and doing the work by hand.
“I learned to roll the collard greens, chop them myself and cook them the old-school way,” he says.
Formal culinary training came later, after an appendicitis surgery
sidelined him during his senior football season and forced him to rethink his path. He enrolled in Job Corps in Kentucky, where he received professional culinary training and found direction.
His background formed a foundation and it still de nes his food. When people see Ponder cooking, they know what they’re getting.
“They say, ‘That’s the Southern boy. That’s the Miami boy who does his collard greens right,’” he says.
While his food carries soul food traditions and he is strongly supported by the Black community, his reach extends far beyond that.
“Even in communities where soul food isn’t passed down through generations, people request it from me because it’s authentic,” he says.
RECIPE
Ponder o cially launched his catering business in 2018, encouraged by his wife, Samantha Bentley-Ponder.
“Did he tell you he catered his own wedding?” she says. “He’s just like that. He does it all.”
Samantha manages billing, helps with shopping and handles the business side of the operation. Ponder is quick to give her credit.
“She’s the boss,” he says. “I’m the cook.”
Married for 12 years, the two operate as a true partnership. Ponder took on larger events as the business grew, including civic gatherings like the Leesburg Chamber of Commerce Fish Fry. The event required coordination, teamwork and trust across vendors and volunteers, and Ponder was especially proud to partner with the Leesburg High School culinary students to help prepare and serve the community.
“That’s our city,” he says. “Feeding people together matters and the students are a big part of that.”
Rosemary Chicken
INGREDIENTS:
8 chicken thighs
2 sprgs fresh rosemary
1 Tbsp salt
1 Tbsp pepper
1 Tbsp onion powder
1 Tbsp chicken bouillon seasoning
2 fresh garlic
1 lemon
DIRECTIONS:
Ponder’s commitment to young people extends beyond one-o events. He works as a mentor with Powerhouse Youth Project alongside Executive Director Scott Chevalier and regularly collaborates with instructor Chef John Bell and the Leesburg High School culinary program.
“Chef Ponder is good with the kids and they like working with him,” Chef Bell says. “He often has students work with
license and enjoys the challenge of large events and venues, but his favorite work happens in a quieter setting. Before a private dinner, he says he gets excited knowing the meal will unfold in someone’s home rather than a crowded venue. The smaller setting lets him connect with the people he’s cooking for and the work feels most natural there.
“Less stress and more work when it’s at someone’s home,” he says.
“It’s just me.”
No matter what the job, however,
Preheat oven to 400°F. heat and add oil. Season chicken thighs on both sides with salt, pepper, onion powder, fresh minced garlic and chicken powder. When the pan is hot, place chicken thighs skin side down and cook until golden brown, about 5 minutes. aside. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper. rosemary and lemon on the sheet pan. skin side up, resting it on top of the lemon, garlic and rosemary. Roast 30 to 35 minutes until the chicken is cooked through and the skin is golden brown and crispy. Remove from oven and, if desired, sprinkle with chopped rosemary and lemon zest while warm.

DIRECTIONS:
In a mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients. Add the wet ingredients and mix until incorporated. Pour the batter into a baking dish and bake 30 minutes. When baking is complete, spread butter and honey across the top. A toothpick inserted in the center should come out clean.
Cornbread
Neckbone
Perloo Rice
INGREDIENTS:
3-4 Ibs pork neck bones
1 small onion, finely diced
3 Tbsp bacon grease or vegetable oil
3 c water
2 tsp salt, divided
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp red pepper flakes (or to taste)
1 1/2 c uncooked jasmine white rice
DIRECTIONS:
Heat grease or oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Season neck bones with 1 teaspoon salt, black pepper and red pepper flakes. Add to the hot pot and brown on all sides, stirring frequently. Add onions, stir and cook 5 minutes. Reduce heat to low. Add water and remaining 1 teaspoon salt, then cover and slowly simmer 2 to 3 hours. Do not boil — maintain a gentle simmer. Allow the stock to cook down, adding water as needed to keep the meat from sticking. Taste the stock and adjust salt and pepper if needed. Stir in rice and increase heat to high. When the broth begins to boil, stir to ensure rice is not sticking to the bottom. Reduce heat to low, cover and cook 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Turn off heat, remove pot from burner and let rest, covered, 30 minutes before serving.
Collard Greens with Smoked Sausage
INGREDIENTS:
3 bunches of Collard Greens
2 smoked sliced/diced sausage links*
1 medium onion diced
2 Tbsp vinegar
1 Tbsp black pepper
2 Tbsp garlic powder
2 Tbsp onion powder
2Tbsp seasoned salt
1/4 c chicken bouillon seasoning
1/4 c sugar
1 stick butter
10 c chicken broth
DIRECTIONS:
Clean and cut one bunch or bag of collard greens. **In a heated stockpot, add half a stick of butter. Brown the sausage, then add onion and cook until tender. Add collard greens and 6 cups chicken broth. Stir in vinegar, sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, seasoned salt, black pepper and chicken bouillon. Bring to a rolling boil and cook 21/2 hours, monitoring frequently and adding more chicken broth as the liquid evaporates. When the greens are finished, the liquid will cook down into a flavorful broth called pot “likker.” If desired, add the remaining half stick of butter for a richer, more savory taste.
*Note: Smoked turkey or ham hocks can be used but must be precooked 1 hour to substitute.
Note from Chef Ponder:
INGREDIENTS
:
4 c sugar
4 c flower
4 stcks butter
6 large eggs
1/2 tsp salt
1 Tbsp vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS:
Cream butter, sugar and vanilla extract until light and smooth. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Gradually add flour and mix until just combined. Do not overmix. Pour batter into a well-greased pan and bake 1 hour 15 minutes at 320 degrees, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Fresh collards are traditionally stripped, rolled, sliced and washed multiple times to remove grit — a labor-intensive ritual in many Southern kitchens. Michael says that pre-shredded greens are perfectly fine and are widely used in restaurants and for catering to speed up the process. "The real magic is in the seasoning and the slow cook," he says.
Worth the Trip
World travelers bring their story home to 24 Middleton.
ordan McDonough and Jonathan “JT”
Tubby have a way of creating spaces that draw people together naturally.
The couple’s latest concept is 24 Middleton, or “24,” a nod to 24 Middleton Avenue in Sidcup, England, where JT’s grandparents met during World War II. These small details make the entire experience delightfully personal.
The two met while working aboard the motor yacht Big Fish o the coast of Santiago, Chile. Raised in England, JT worked in the galley and Jordan managed operations. A shared love of travel, global avors and hospitality took them around the world, from South America to Scandinavia, before they eventually settled back in The Villages, where Jordan grew up.
That history isn’t performative. It shows up on the menu, in the dining room and in the way the sta speaks about Jordan and JT with admiration.
Their in uence runs from the nomadic dishes to the familiar comforts, while mismatched mirrors and hand-drawn art give the space a lived-in feel.
General manager John Wilkinson says the couple’s inspiration has guided the restaurant from the beginning.
“Passion drives everything here,” John says. “This has been a vision of theirs for years and, having experienced diverse cuisines and cultures, that eclectic food background really shows.”
STORY: GINA HORAN ≈ PHOTOS: NICOLE HAMEL
He says the focus extends beyond the menu and into the culture they’re building.
“Some of our sta isn’t from the industry per se, but they love food and want to be part of this team and this experience,” he says.
Rising culinary talent Brianna Santiago says she loves the positive atmosphere.
“JT and Jordan have created a culture that promotes genuine teamwork, which feels less like just a workplace and more like a family working toward the same goal,” she says.
Brianna also appreciates the fresh ingredients and adventurous choices on the menu.
The spread of rotating daily dips she prepared for Style’s Chief Photographer Nicole and I on a recent visit re ected that idea.
The feta was creamy and the beet hummus ruby red and earthy. The baba ghanoush made with activated charcoal looked slightly intimidating in color but tasted tangy and satisfying when paired with fresh naan bread.
We tried some stellar “gateway” dishes as well, like the grilled branzino and tru e mushroom atbread. Sides that could be afterthoughts elsewhere shine here, including brussels sprouts with bacon and re-roasted carrots, both satisfying and comforting.
For those who prefer familiar fare, I recommend the roasted chicken with ngerling potatoes or the classic wedge salad.
All desserts are made in-house, and the key lime pie is worth saving room for.
On the beverage side, bar manager Brandon Johnson has developed a stellar cocktail menu, including the smoky mango sol and balanced ginger pear martini. There are also plenty of choices for non-drinkers. Personally, I loved Ren’s Lemonade,
The wine list was curated by Lisa Reilly, the general manager at Edna’s on the Green, 24’s sister property. She is also in the diploma program with Wine & Spirits Education Trust.
“It was a pleasure to choose the wine for their list, knowing that we would have a lot of crossover guests from Edna’s and 24,” she says. “I have a lot of folks that stop in to tell me about a wine they had at 24 and how well it paired with their meal.”
If you’re a foodie, I recommend sitting at the chef’s counter.
It’s tting that a tree that once stood inside the Rialto Theater in Spanish Springs now anchors part of the space, tied to a childhood memory for Jordan, who remembers eating ice cream beneath its branches. For all the travel and polish, the roots are still a hometown story.
“JT and Jordan have created a culture that promotes genuine teamwork, which feels less like just a workplace and more like a family working toward the same goal.”

When Storytelling Wins
The ‘A’ team celebrates an award-winning year.
very year at the Florida Press Club Excellence in Journalism Awards, our team at Akers Media (aka the ‘A’ team) waits to see how we stack up against publications across the state. This year, we brought home 45 awards, an achievement that a rms the long hours and emotional investment we pour into our work.
For me, they also reinforce a career path that wasn’t exactly traditional but instead, meant to be. As a kid, I lled journals, collected quotes and loved reading. In high school, I helped classmates write papers and as an adult, I wrote resumes, newsletters and business plans.
Years later, after moving from Arizona to Florida, I worked in customer service at a bank for ve years until a company-wide layo allowed me to stay home with my three children, one a newborn, for nearly a year, a blessing in disguise.
After shifting gears, I started an editorial assistant job with a local newspaper and was allowed to write a couple

stories per week under the guidance of a tough, old-school, excellent reporter my editor called a teddy bear down deep inside . . . tell that to my secret tears in the bathroom.
Months later, he quit and I asked for the job. My editor was on board, yet jokingly said he hoped nothing major would happen anytime soon. Well, within weeks while at an elementary school with my photographer covering a light-hearted story, we were called to a suspected homicide scene next door because the newly hired police reporter had not yet started.
I was nervous but wrote the story and even a follow-up giving the victim’s family a voice. And more than 21 years of writing stories in various genres about countless people later, here I am. Still a journalist and still loving every minute of it.
With that, our ‘A’ team is honored and grateful for every award, but even more so for the opportunity to continue making an impact on our community by telling stories of the people who make it so special.
