Upsilon Alpha Omega has entered another era of Leadership, Service and Sisterhood. Welcome to the ERA of I.G.N.I.T.E!
As we continue to uphold the legacy of sisterhood, scholarship, and service, I am delighted to welcome you to the first edition of the IGNITE Newsletter.
I am beyond tickled pink and peacock proud to serve as the 10th Basileus of Upsilon Alpha Omega Chapter. Your confidence and support as I have embarked on this journey, has been heartwarming and uplifting. Together, we remain committed to advancing the vision of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. with grace, integrity and excellence.
It is my desire to make YOU proud! I ask that you join me, as we Inspire Greatness and Make a Notable Impact towards Excellence in the Gwinnett County Community. We will I.G.N.I.T.E. We will serve our community, significantly and notably, to have long lasting impact in ways that are transformative, elevating and life changing. My goal is to impact the dreams and aspirations of college bound students, through meaningful scholarship giving.
This newsletter serves not only as a reflection of our recent achievements but also as a guiding light for our continued leadership and collective impact.

Soror Twan Leonard is a Life Member and Silver Star of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc®. She was initiated in Spring 1989 on the campus of Auburn University. She has been a member of AKA for 35 years and a member of Upsilon Alpha Omega Chapter for 30 years.
“I am beyond humbled and grateful for this recognition and so touched by the kind sisterly words from my dear sorors. I love my AKA and I love my sorors! In partnership with Gwinnett Serves and using donated Grimmway Farms boxes, we packed dozens of food bags to support familiesinneedacrossourcommunity.This act of service not only addressed food insecurity but also strengthened our bonds ofsisterhoodandpurpose.

Home of Hope is a dedicated women and children’s shelter that provides safe housing, support, and vital resources to single mothersandtheirchildren. Theirmissionistoequipmomswith thelifeskills,tools,andtheconfidenceneededtoachievelong-term independenceandstability.
In the Kids Club Room, Sorors cleaned toys and bins used by toddlers through elementary-aged children, ensuring a safe and welcoming play space. Meanwhile, other Sorors tackled the donation room, reorganizing hundreds of toysforchildrenofallages.

In true UAO fashion, UAO members set out to serve Gwinnett Community despite the frigid temperatures. Streetwise offers Georgia residents the necessary physical, emotional, mental and spiritual tools needed to help stabilizetheirlives. Sororsassistedparticipantswithshoppingforgroceries andtoiletriesinthefoodpantryandsorteddonatedclothesforthecommunity closet. Our group that was stationed at Streetwise Georgia left with their heartsfull.

Despitethechillyweather,ourincredibleLittle MissesandLittleMistersdemonstratedthetrue spirit of service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther KingJr.Day!AtNewMerciesChristianChurch (Mercy Seed), these young hearts proved that kindness knows no bounds. Instead of participating in the canceled parade, they channeled their energy into something just as impactful: creating heartfelt blessing cards to accompanycarepackagesforthehomeless.

Greater Atlanta HBCU College Fair
Upsilon Alpha Omega proudly participated in the 7th Annual Greater Atlanta HBCU College Fair, engaging with approximately 300 enthusiastic high school students. Our Sorors had a wonderful time sharing scholarship opportunities and offering guidance to future scholars as they explore their paths toward highereducation. Itwasaninspiringdayfilledwithservice,mentorship,and meaningful connections—supporting students as they prepare to IGNITE their academicjourney.
The theme was Engagement in Exploration, Discovery, and Self-Expression: Exploring Career Options (Career Exploration). The youth leaders selected to do the Entrepreneurial Explorationactivity,whichinvolvedthembreakingintogroupstodevelopabusinessidea.The idea was to solve a problem and have a clear path to making money. In order to execute this activity, we added a fun twist by making it like the show, Shark Tank, where there the YLI Committeemembersactedasthe"Sharks",astheYLIerspresentedtheirideas.Thegroupsdidan amazingjobpresentingtheiruniqueandinnovativeideas!

A ‘Gaming Controllers’ Event for the Little
On March 1, 2025, the LMAKA Committee hosted a heartwarming and highenergy"GamingControllers"eventdesignedtostrengthenthebondbetween theLittleMistersandtheirmothers.
Held in a fun, interactive setting, the event featured a variety of video and board games that encouraged teamwork, friendly competition, and quality time. Laughter echoed throughout the room as mothers and sons joined forcesatgamingstations,sharedsnacks,andcreatedlastingmemories.
The“GamingControllers”eventwasmorethanjustplay,itwasacelebration of family connection, support, and joy. The LMAKA Committee continues to createspacesthatnurturethesespecial relationships.

The the Pretty Pink Party Bus became a space where every participant could shine and feel like royalty filled with joy, laughter, and self-care as our young ladies enjoyed mini-manicures, facials, and confidence-building activities designed to encourage inner and outer beauty.
On Saturday, March 22, 2025, our Little Miss AKA participants were treated to a glamorous and unforgettable Spa Day experience aboard the fabulous Pretty Pink Party Bus, parked at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. This sparkling mobile retreat was the perfect setting to pamper our girls as they prepared for the upcoming Little Miss AKA Pageant.

Our Little Miss AKA Talent Show paid dazzling tributetotheHarlemRenaissance.Fromstartto finish, the evening was a stunning showcase of youngtalentandtimelessBlackExcellence.With bright lights, vintage flair, and enthusiastic cheers from the audience, participants stepped intothespotlighttosharetheirremarkablegifts. From ballet and music to poetry, dance, and soul-stirring vocals, each performance beautifully reflected the elegance, artistry, and cultural pride that defined the Harlem Renaissance.
The celebration honored not only the talents of eachchild,butalsothehistoricalsignificanceofthe era—bringing to life the rhythm, resilience, and brilliance of figures like Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith, Langston Hughes, and Josephine Baker througheverymovementandverse.
The highlight of the evening came with a round of applause for our talent winners: Little Miss Imani and Little Mr. Sam, whose outstanding performances left an unforgettable mark on the audienceandjudgesalike.Theirpoise,passion,and stage presence perfectly captured the spirit of the night. The Little Miss AKA Talent Show was more than an event—it was a celebration of legacy, leadership,andthelimitlesspotentialofouryouth. Itwasareminderthatwhenchildrenaregiventhe stage,theydon’tjustperform—theyshine.
Gwinnett County, GA — The annual PinkGoesRedeventbroughtenergy, excitement,andanimportantmessage abouthearthealthtothecommunity, drawing over 200 enthusiastic participants filled with fitness, fun, andphilanthropy.
Thanks to generous community support,over700gamesandpuzzles werecollectedanddonatedtoSenior Living Facilities across the county. These contributions will provide hoursofentertainmentandcognitive stimulation for seniors, supporting boththeirmentalandemotionalwellbeing. Sorors celebrated the event's dualsuccessinpromotinghealthand givingback.
As the Pink Goes Red tradition continues to grow, it remains a shining example of how health educationandcommunityservicecan go hand-in-hand to build a stronger, morecompassionateGwinnett.Itwas incredible to see Sorors and participantscometogethernotjustto movefortheirhearts,buttogivefrom themaswell!

Sororslaceduptheirskatesandrolledintoactionforameaningfulcause, comingtogethertoraisefundsfortheAmericanCancerSocietyandRelay forLife2025.Theeventwasfilledwithenergy,laughter,andsisterhoodas sororsandfriendsgatheredinunitytosupportcancerresearchandhonor thoseimpactedbythedisease.
Beyondthefun,theeveningwasrootedinpurpose.Everydollarraisedand every lap around the rink brought hope to those fighting cancer and supportedthemissionoftheAmericanCancerSociety.
Sororssharedhugs,stories,andlotsoflaughs,enjoyingtheopportunityto bond while giving back. Whether gliding gracefully or wobbling with enthusiasm, everyone was united by a shared goal: to fight cancer and celebratelife.
Theeventwasatremendoussuccessandatestamenttothepowerofservice,sisterhood,andsolidarity. Sorors are proud to have rolled with purpose, and are already looking forward to next year’s Rool Bouncecelebration!

OnFebruary8,2025,GwinnettCountyhosteditsfirstHouseholdHazardousWaste CollectionDayoftheyearattheGwinnettCountyFairgrounds.Thiseventwasa collaborativeeffortbetweenGwinnettClean&BeautifulandtheGwinnettCounty Department of Water Resources, aiming to provide residents with a safe and environmentally responsible way to dispose of household hazardous waste. Volunteersplayedacrucialroleintheevent'ssuccessbyassistingwithtaskssuchas unloadingitemsfromvehicles,directingtraffic,andorganizingmaterialsforproper disposal. UAOsororswererightinthemixmakingithappen.Theeventaccepteda wide range of hazardous materials, including automotive fluids, batteries, paints, pesticides,andmore.

The10thAnnualSip&SwineBBQFestivaltookplaceonMarch7–8,2025,at CoolrayFieldinLawrenceville,Georgia. Thisfamily-friendlyeventfeaturedlive music,over100foodandcraftvendors,andavarietyofbarbecuecompetitions. Most importantly, 100% of the proceeds from the festival benefited Home of Hope,aGwinnettWomenandChildren’sShelter.HomeofHopeisanonprofit organizationdedicatedtoprovidingtransitionalhousingandsupportservicesto homeless children and their mothers. Home of Hope is a UAO community partner.

TheSisterlyRelationsCommittee hosted the inaugural Soror Squads Galentine’s Social on Sunday, February 16, 2025, bringing together over 30 sorors for a joyful afternoon of connectionandcelebration.
The event highlighted the unity and diversitywithinthechapter,withstrong representation from the Line Dancing Squad, Step & Stroll Squad, and Book ClubSquad.Sororsenjoyedavarietyof engaging activities, including singing games,bingo,linedancing,andplentyof laughter.
