January set a powerful tone for 2026, and I could not be prouder of the Sorors of the Gamma Theta Omega Chapter. We began the year in true Alpha Kappa Alpha fashion purposeful, polished, and present in our community. With three Founders’ Day celebrations, we honored the legacy of our visionary founders and reaffirmed our commitment to sisterhood and service.

Our presence at the MLK Day Parade and The AKA Day at the Capital demonstrated our ongoing dedication to civic engagement and social justice. Seeing our members with undergrads and youth groups walking together was a beautiful sight. We also gathered for the TOBA Breakfast, where we joined community partners in uplifting the values of service, equity, and collective progress.

Now, as we move into February, we embrace the spirit of Black History Month. This is a time not only to honor the pioneers whose shoulders we stand on, but also to recognize the excellence within our own chapter. We will highlight the achievements of several Gamma Theta Omega members whose work continues to empower our community Their stories remind us that Black history is not only something we commemorate, but also something we create every day.

As we continue our service initiatives and prepare for the months ahead, I encourage each of you to stay engaged, stay inspired, and stay connected. Our chapter is strong because we collaborate and unite with one another. Thank you for all you do to uphold the legacy of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated®. We are indeed better 2gether!

As we continue to ness our youth groups, Prec bloom this season. Like petals unfolding with intention and grace, our young ladies are growing in confidence, leadership, scholarship, and service. Precious Pearls are learning the power of kindness, character, and community, while Emerging Young Leaders are stepping boldly into their purpose as changemakers who uplift women and families in need. Their commitment, creativity, and compassion remind us that when we nurture strong roots, beautiful impact follows. In celebration of their growth and impact, two dedicated articles in this issue highlight the remarkable work and spirit of our youth groups. It is an honor to support spaces where our girls are affirmed, equipped, and empowered to flourish, and I am excited to see how they will continue to bloom as the next generation of leaders in our sisterhood and our community.

Chapter Leads with Purpose Proudly Throughout February

February was a month of visible leadership, strategic engagement, and meaningful celebration for the Chapter. As we observe Black History Month, marking 50 years since its expansion from a week to a nationally recognized month, we honor our legacy while actively advancing progress through advocacy, fellowship, and representation.

At AKA Day at the Capitol in Tallahassee, our Chapter engaged local and state officials in informed dialogue centered on policy awareness and civic responsibility. Our presence underscored Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®’s enduring commitment to political action and community empowerment. We did not simply attend, we participated with purpose, reinforcing the importance of informed advocacy during a month dedicated to honoring Black achievement and influence.

In partnership with our Cluster Sorors in Lakeland, we commemorated Founders’ Day with a distinguished luncheon marked by musical excellence and sisterly fellowship. This observance paid tribute to our Illustrious Founders and reaffirmed our charge to lead with scholarship, service, and integrity 118 years later.

The Chapter also proudly represented at the Florida State Fair Opening in celebration of America’s 250th birthday. Our participation reflected both historical awareness and contemporary leadership, demonstrating that African American women continue to shape the civic and cultural fabric of this nation.

February reminded us that history is not only remembered but also demonstrated through action. Through advocacy, collaboration, and visible leadership, Gamma Theta Omega continues to embody excellence in service.

It is a distinct honor to serve alongside the accomplished women of this Chapter, as we uphold our legacy and move decisively into the future.

Gamma Theta Omega Chapter Strengthens Leadership Lead 2gether Training

Gamma Theta Omega hosted its dynamic leadership training, LEAD 2gether, designed to reinforce the principles of collaboration, accountability, and forward-facing leadership. Members were encouraged to embrace the idea that true leaders guide from the front and that collective strength is achieved when everyone works together with intention and unity.

LEAD 2gether served as both a refresher and a call to action reminding members that leadership is not a title but a commitment to service, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Sorors received information focused on developing strong leaders, the importance of clear communication, upcoming digital enhancements to the website and overall sisterly etiquette.

Presenters included Basileus, Soror Deidre R. Jones, First Anti-Basileus Soror Patrice Joseph, Risk Management Chairman, Soror Frances Silva, Webmistress, Soror Kisha Porter and former Basileus Soror Evelyn McFadden.

Pink Goes Red 2026: A Heart- Healthy Experience of Education and Empowerment

Gamma Theta Omega proudly hosted Pink Goes Red 2026 on Friday, February 6, 2026, at the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital Michael Bilirakis VA SCI/D Center in Tampa, Florida.

This impactful event brought together community members, health professionals, and partners for an evening centered on heart health, wellness, and practical lifestyle strategies.

The program was expertly guided by Mistress of Ceremonies, Ms. Casandra Brown, setting the tone for a meaningful and engaging experience. Gamma Theta Omega President, Mrs. Deidre R. Jones, opened the event with warm words of welcome, followed by a moment of reflection through prayer and meditation led by Dr. Christine Myatt. Mrs. Essie Pearl Mobley shared the significance of the occasion, grounding the audience in the importance of heart health awareness and prevention.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Toriquic Dunkley, who presented an informative and empowering discussion on Weight Management and Heart Health. Attendees gained valuable insight into sustainable habits, risk reduction, and the connection between daily choices and long-term cardiovascular wellness.

The program also featured brief vendor introductions before transitioning into interactive breakout sessions designed to encourage movement and healthy living. Participants enjoyed a chair stretch demonstration led by Dr. Nancy Belli of the YMCA, an energizing line dancing session facilitated by Ms. Shayla Carson, and a practical healthy meal preparation demonstration by Chef Samuel Scott Jr. of Cater2u.

Pink Goes Red 2026: A Heart- Healthy Experience of Education and Empowerment

As the afternoon concluded, attendees were reminded that heart health is not a moment it’s a movement. Pretty girls walk like this… choosing balance, prioritizing wellness, and committing daily to living heart-healthy lifestyles. Gamma Theta Omega encourages the community to keep the momentum going by moving more, nourishing their bodies, and leading with intention, because caring for your heart is always in style.

Special recognition is extended to Soror Sherry SmithWilliams, Chairman; Co-Chairmen Sorors Alexis Williams and Jasmine Crawford; and the entire Health Committee for their outstanding leadership, dedication, and execution of an exceptional event.

A Thank You from Emerging Young Leaders

Emerging Young Leaders extends heartfelt thanks to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® for their support of the Mr. Bubbles community service event. I am Journei Lindsey Youth President for the 2025–2026 year, and our mission is to support women in need. With your generosity, we packed over 200 hygiene kits for women experiencing homelessness, helping us turn service into action. Thank you for uplifting our community and supporting our mission.

50 Years of Excellence: Miss Teenage Tampa & Little Miss Rosebud Kickoff

For five decades, these programs have cultivated confidence, leadership, academic excellence, and cultural awareness in young women throughout our community.

I would like to first acknowledge my co-Chairs Soror Ashley Jones and Soror Jordanyne Fye. These 2 Sorors have stepped up to the plate and come with some great ideas and a willingness to serve.

Soror Ashley Jones is our most immediate past Anti-Grammateus and Soror Jordanyne Fye has been a faithful member who continues to contribute her efforts throughout the chapter. Both Sorors are serving members on the Healthcare Committee as well

Next, for the month of February, GenNEXT members were encouraged to Love Your Heart GenNEXT collaborated with the Healthcare Committee for Pink Goes Red Soror Shalya Cason and Soror Netta Mckissic-Stroman lead a lively break out session during the event where attendees were encouraged to sweat, connect, and show their heart some love.

I would like to send a special thanks to all of our GenNEXT and Chapter Members who participated in the Cluster II Founder’s Day Service Project.

The results are in, our Chapter represented well. We collected:

·41 packs of colored pencils

·45 Teens Books

·11 Coloring Books

Overall, Cluster II-donated over 600 boxes of colored pencils, 300 books and over 200 adult coloring books. Our contributions went to support Healthy Start in Lakeland and Lakeland Regional.

Hillsborough County Commissioner Gwen Myers was honored with the Solomon Award by Feeding Tampa Bay in January 2026. This prestigious award recognizes her lifelong dedication to community service and her ongoing partnership with the organization. The honor was presented during an event highlighting collective efforts to end food insecurity. We applaud Soror Gwen!

Sorors Shine for Black History Month

Her leadership and presence underscored the event’s theme of honoring those who pave the way through dedication and courage.

The City of Tampa hosted its annual Black History Month celebration, bringing the community together to honor legacy, service, and leadership. This year ’ s program highlighted the achievements of veterans who were recognized for their military service. Gamma Theta Omega chapter members Christine Glover and Laurell Jones were honored for their contributions as veterans and added a powerful layer of pride and reflection to the event. The ceremony ’ s keynote address was delivered by Fire Chief Barbara Tripp, another dedicated member of Gamma Theta Omega. Chief Tripp spoke with conviction about the importance of service, unity, and the ongoing work of uplifting Black communities.

Tampa’s celebration served as both a tribute to history and a reminder of the individuals who continue to shape it locally and beyond.
