CONTINUING THE LEGACY MississippiHealthProject TheMississippiHealthProjectwasapioneeringpublichealthinitiativelaunchedin1935byAlpha KappaAlphaSorority,incorporated®toaddresstheseverelackofmedicalcareforAfricanAmerican familiesintheruralMississippiDelta.DuringtheGreatDepression,limitedaccesstohospitalsand segregatedhealthcaresystemsleftthousandswithoutpropertreatment.UndertheleadershipofIdaL. JacksonandMedicalDirectorDorothyCelesteBouldingFerebee,sororitysmembersorganizedmobile clinics that traveled to remote communities. Volunteer doctors, nurses, and sorors provided immunizations,physicalexaminations,prenatalcare,nutritionalguidance,andtreatmentforinfectious diseases.Atitsheight,theProjectservednearly 15,000childrenandfamiliesbetween1935and1941. Recognizednationallyforitsimpact,theinitiativebecameapowerfulexampleofservice,advocacy,and health equity. The Mississippi Health Project remains one of the sorority’s most historic and transformativepublichealthefforts.
