CEO MESSAGE
IN 2020
many things have transpired within our company and certainly outside the company. I can’t tell you enough how proud I am of our leadership, our field and plant crews, our drivers, and all of the QC and office staff that worked so hard, committed themselves to the task at hand and kept our company alive and well. It is hard enough to focus on our personal lives, family, and much more to avoid COVID-19 on a daily basis, digest the racial turmoil, listen to the politics from both sides, the rise and fall of our pocketbooks, and yet get up and gather our thoughts and refocus for a safe and fun filled day at work. Fortunately, we have survived it all and have come out of 2020 intact, solvent, with fresh ideas, and employees dedicated to the company’s success. How good is that? Pretty Special I think. Are we where we want to be? No, but we are headed in the right solid direction. In the spring of 2020 a small group of Ajax leadership set about a process of meetings and “think tank” discussions to develop a short and long term Strategic Plan. From that came a long term VISION called THE CHOICE, a revised corporate MISSION STATEMENT, and a review of our CORE BELIEFS & VALUES adding an additional important value. An action plan was developed and small groups were organized to work on the Team Assignments. Behind the scenes teams of people are working on the following topics: Talent Recruitment and Development, Government and Community Outreach, Innovation, Growth, Processes and Operations, and Risk Management. All of these topics are important to the GOAL of making our VISION a reality. In addition, we began work on an overall QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (QMS) used to attain Performance Excellence. It is designed to assure the continued reputation of Ajax as a top tier Highway Contractor. We know to be the best, we must work at it each and every day. It has always been said that our reputation is important. It will be determined by the standards and behaviors of all of our people. As we continue to mature as a company we will always rely on our people to drive us forward.
A topic important to me personally is racial inequality and unfairness. It’s one that leaders and employers hate to discuss and are afraid to bring to the surface and have an open discussion. Nationally it has not been addressed or handled properly by those in charge. My promise is that our company will do our part to insure the opportunity to be trained, advanced, and promoted will be equal to everyone of any ethnic background or race. Talent Development is a topic we are working hard on to have a clear route to advancement and avail the chance to do so based on a person’s motivation, work ethic, attitude, and training regardless of ethnic origin. The expectation that all of our people in a management position will treat our workers with respect and dignity that every human being deserves is of primary importance to this company. I expect our leaders will ensure this philosophy and work to improve where needed. Again our company is strong, both in the quality of our people and our financial stability. But to stay on top we must continue to work together, and strive to be the best. We have the team to do it. Let’s aggressively move forward and ensure our success. As always be safe out there, and Keep the Faith!
Stay Safe out there! Keep the Faith! Mike Horan, CEO

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
2020 WAS QUITE THE YEAR
Pandemic • COVID-19, as I write this article, 52.3 million cases worldwide with 1.29 million deaths Rioting throughout the Nation • Race relations • De-fund the police Presidential Election • Republican incumbent succumbs to his Democratic challenger I recently thought back to when I was a kid and realized that as much as things seem to change, history has a way of repeating itself.
1968 WAS ALSO QUITE A YEAR.
Pandemic • H3N2 Virus National Rioting • Death of Martin Luther King, Jr. • Vietnam War Presidential Election • Republican former Vice President Richard Nixon defeated Democratic incumbent Vice President Hubert Humphrey. Much like our national history, Ajax has a storied history. When I began with Ajax in 2002, Ajax was on a path to lead the Florida Paving Industry in being the number one contractor when it came to quality. How did we do? 2003 was a year that I was quite proud of. We began to hire and build a solid group of Field Quality Control Technicians. On, April 3, 2003, I hired Mark Slomski, who remains the only original member of the Field QC Team. What a solid hire for Ajax. State Construction Engineer for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) at a District Quarterly Contractor’s Meeting in Ft. Myers made the following statement, “I am tired of listening to all of you Contractor’s say that you cannot figure this QC 2000 thing out. If you want to see how it is done, go spend a day with Ajax.” I am more proud of that statement made by the State Construction Engineer than I am about anything
6
else that has ever happened in my career. He was correct in stating that we had figured it out. In my opinion, we had quickly become the best paving and quality contractor in the State of Florida. There is an old saying that getting to the top is easier than staying at the top. What an accurate statement. While we remain one of the top-paving contractors in the State, we must be honest with ourselves and admit that we are not at the top of our game. Therefore, what do we do, we repeat history. 2021 is the year for the rebirth of our quality and paving operations.
“I am tired of listening to all of you Contractor’s say that you cannot figure this QC 2000 thing out. If you want to see how it is done, go spend a day with Ajax.” In 2020, we hired a consultant to train our managers from the foreman level up to be leaders. We brought in an outside consultant to evaluate our paving crews and provide training. Our Quality Control Unit worked diligently in the field to train our operators on smoothness and density. The Maintenance Division progressed through another year of increasing the level of preventive maintenance to have the equipment ready to go when it was go time. We are now rewriting job descriptions to better define roles and responsibilities for our personnel. We as a company, like our nation, must learn from our past mistakes, unite and move forward. I can promise you that the leaders at Ajax stand together and are united in agreeing that we want to be as strong and proud as we were in 2003.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Why? There are going to be some difficult financial times for our Country, State, Counties, Cities and others as we progress through the next several years, if not longer. Quality and getting it correct the first time are now more important than ever. We must produce a quality mix, lay a quality mat and have no go backs. This also includes our concrete and grade crews. My ask for the future is that we all pull together as a company and as a nation, learn from our past and execute to perfection as we move forward. So Much for the history lesson. How does the future look? 2021 looks to be another solid year. We currently have a healthy backlog with our estimators and sales staff looking to add to it each day. The FDOT Work Program looks to remain strong as we move forward. The state reassures me that the resurfacing program will have additional lane miles in the upcoming FDOT fiscal years. I would be missing the mark if I did not address safety. We did a few things this year that were controversial to our culture. The big cultural shift was installing cameras and GPS in our vehicles. There was
Lastly, in 2021, we need to make sure that we operate and secure each job site so that it complies with all rules and guidelines so that those passing through our projects can do so without experiencing an incident or accident that can be linked to Ajax. This is a never ending task that takes focus. In the end, all that we want is for everyone to participate in Boots on, Boots off. This includes those that pass through our work sites. Even the pedestrian or bicyclist deserves to go home safely.
Be safe out there!
Vince Hafeli, President
“2021 is the year for the rebirth of our quality and paving operations.” much hype over this for about a month and then it went away. While the hype went away, the change in driving behavior has stayed. I congratulate and say thank you to every driver for accepting the program and making us a safer organization. As we make our way through 2021, we need to reduce the number of OSHA reportable incidents. Let us all be cognitive of those working around us and look out for one another. This includes Ajax employees, subcontractors, vendors, consultants and owner representatives. w w w.AjaxPaving.com/Florida

VICE PRESIDENT MESSAGE
CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT ON
day one at Ajax Paving you receive an A-Team card. You are officially on the team! You’re part of a team of motivated professionals that drive positive relationships and deliver construction services and products that exceed expectations on safety, quality and value. The A-Team is committed to achieve our Vision, “The Choice”, to be the Employer of Choice, the Contractor of Choice and the Partner of Choice. This card will help guide you into the Ajax culture and provide direction so we’re all working toward a common goal. We’re striving to be “The Choice”. To be “The Choice” we must focus on being great at what we do. Whether you’re planning and building a project in the field or making a business deal in the board room, excellence matters. Excellence is defined as the quality of being outstanding or extremely good. As we strive for excellence, we’re always looking at where we are today and how we can improve for tomorrow. This does not mean perfection. We’re simply looking to continuously improve and never settle. In early 2020, we set out to offer more training and development programs to help people advance their skills and ultimately their careers at Ajax. This is a long-term investment into our future and something we are putting a large emphasis on moving forward. Much work has already been done to build a sustainable program and this will certainly affect everyone within the organization.
8
So where are we at today? Well, over the past year we have developed a formal strategic plan, provided leadership training to many supervisors, completed Myers-Briggs personality assessments with workshops and began developing competency models. A little more insight is provided below: The Ajax Strategic Plan was started in April of 2020 and is designed to provide clarity, direction and focus to the team. This started with a small group of senior management defining what we wanted out of the process and to review the Vision, Mission and Core Beliefs. Once this step was completed, the group was expanded to encompass a larger cross-section of managers around the company. From this, 6 key areas of focus became apparent. 1. Talent Development 2. Processes 3. Innovation 4. Risk Management 5. Growth 6. Community and Governmental Outreach You can expect to see the full summary of our strategic plan in the coming months.
“The A-Team is committed to achieve our Vision, “The Choice”, to be the Employer of Choice, the Contractor of Choice and the Partner of Choice.”

VICE PRESIDENT MESSAGE
Leadership Training will be a key component in our talent development plan moving forward. Some leadership qualities come naturally (the things you are born with), but many are acquired skills from our experiences, formal training and other leaders. Ajax is committed to providing the formal training required to cultivate leaders for the future. The 2020 leadership training emphasized collaborative leadership, making decisions with confidence, effective communication and taking ownership. We will continue to shape and refine this as we moving forward. The Myers-Briggs Assessment is a personality assessment that helps people better understand themselves and others. It helps explain our natural tendencies and preferences, so we are able to better communicate and listen. Ultimately, it helps people to not only tolerate the differences between people, but actually acknowledge and appreciate these differences resulting in a wellbalanced and diverse team. In 2020, we had several groups complete the assessment along with a workshop. This will continue in 2021 as we investment in our people. Our most valuable asset. A Competency Model is a collection of critical skills that define what success looks like for each position at Ajax (a road map to master your position). This will be a tool used going forward for personalized skill development. Our plan for personalized skill development is a four step process. 1. Define – Define which skills are need for each position (Competency Model) 2. Measure – Measure through reviews and assessments to identify skills gaps. 3. Plan – Have a personalized plan for skill development. 4. Develop – Have routine conversations with your supervisor to help build critical skills and continue growth within Ajax.
Once the personalized development process is fully implemented (which will take most of 2021), you’ll be able to define what success looks like in your position and be aware of the critical skills you need to master your position. This will accelerate learning and drive excellence in performance. It’s an exciting time to be part of the A-Team. We are fortunate to have such motivated employees throughout the company. The Continuous improvement and talent development processes that we’re working on today, will help us become better tomorrow. This will take hard work and dedication from everyone on the A-Team, but it will be fun and rewarding. I have all the confidence in the world that each of you will thrive as we continue to grow and improve – and continue making our vision of being “The Choice” a reality. I will leave you with this quote: “Only one who devotes himself to a cause with his whole strength and soul can be a true master. For this reason mastery demands all of a person.” Albert Einstein

ESTIMATING
L
ake Superior University recently published a list of words and phrases that should be banished in 2021. This list included the following phrases : COVID-19 (also corona, Rona, et al), Social Distancing, We’re all in this together, In an abundance of caution, In these uncertain times, Pivot, Unprecedented, Karen, Sus, and I know right. I think we can all agree we have heard some of these phrases more than we ever cared to over the last year; however, we are all concerned on some level about remaining stable during this pandemic. Fortunately, Ajax is in great financial health with a backlog of work in the bank and the company continues to capitalize on unique opportunities to keep our backlog healthy and our crews at work. Specifically our estimating staff at Ajax remained active and flexible throughout the evolving Covid government protocols. We learned to meet on many of platforms including Zoom, Teams and Skype. We attended pre-bids, handoffs, pre-cons and staff meetings virtually – requiring us to become experts at sharing data and plan renderings on a multitude of platforms. This challenge only made us better as a team. Moving forward, we will be expanding our sales territory to include the Lake Wales area. We added a new government estimator, Duncan McKillop, to our staff to help handle the increased market area and bid load. Ajax also purchased a new sitework takeoff program, Agtek. It will assist in evaluating bid quantities and their phasing on jobs.
Members of the estimating staff and several of the company’s project managers will attend the Bid2Win conference in a virtual format to receive in-depth software training so we can have more “hands on deck” when reviewing bids and pricing change orders. Our department also transitioned filing to a digital format so that we can share information seamlessly with construction management and subcontractors with ease. In the last few months, the estimating staff has pursued an unprecedented number of design build contracts. These pursuits require us to develop design plans, quantities and pricing to submit for scoring to the owner. The estimating staff works in conjunction with the designbuild/pre-construction staff who specialize in these pursuits.

Duncan comes to us with experience in the residential and commercial market. Duncan has strong analytical computer skills which will help us understand market trends and bid history. He is bidding jobs throughout the company to become familiar with area construction management and the various agencies with which we work. Welcome to the A-Team Duncan!
District 7 Special Project at Peter O. Knight Airport (Area 3)
Our combined team was successful bidder on three design-build roadway contracts: One each in Fort Myers, Bradenton and Tampa. These unique opportunities allow us to be creative and innovative with design and construction planning by working hand in hand with engineers and the owner, leading to a project with maximized value and profit opportunities. In addition, these jobs have provided over 150,000 tons to our backlog over the next few years. Meanwhile, we remain focused on the jobs that keep our crews busy day in and day out. The estimating staff works hard to provide accurate cost estimates that reflect Ajax’s crew performance on similar jobs. Build 2 Win and Viewpoint, as well as, our participation in job handoffs through the Blueprint for Success model helps to get valuable feedback from the field about production and performance to the estimators. We are always working to make our bids better, our budgets achievable and our profits maximized. It is an exciting time and we are ready for what lies ahead.
Preconstruction Manager, Felipe Jaramillo, presented at the Virtual Florida Design-Build Conference. Felipe discussed ways to drive innovation through design-build.
Christie Alvaro, Director of Estimating Even our Ajax pets had to adapt to working from home! Attending conferences, bidmeetings, and staff meetings virtually was definitely a unique challenge in 2020!

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
City of Venice Resurfacing Contract The City of Venice hasn’t had a paving project of this size in a few years and this project had some major roads that were in need of repair. The commercial area located near our Main office in North Venice, which encompassed Triple Diamond Blvd, Technology Dr and Precision Dr are three of the main feeders to major Venice Commercial Businesses. These roads were reconstructed around business schedules to accommodate their deliveries and employees. We also resurfaced the Pinebrook neighborhood and placed brand new sidewalk down the main stretch of Pinebrook Way. We also resurfaced the commercial area near downtown Venice: Warfield Ave, Grove St and Spur St. We replaced the concrete apron to the fire station and accommodated their trucks during this process. Later in the project, we resurfaced and fixed issues on San Marco, Riviera and Bayshore Dr. This extra work included replacing storm drain at the main intersection downtown at Harbor Dr and Venice Project Write-up by: Nathan Hassler, Project Manager
Ave, as well as replacing the brick pavers that had settled with the new stamped asphalt. Project Superintendent duties were split between Wally Cabral and Cameron Milliken. Both did an incredible job completing this project for the City of Venice. PROJECT BID: 2.7 Million TONNAGE: 27,000
SR 776 Scope of Work: A well laid out plan from the beginning made this project run very smooth. SR 776 consisted of mill and overlay, signal and lighting updates, concrete sidewalk, curb & gutter, ADA improvements, guardrail, sod and striping. We were very ambitious to tackle this job and complete it in a short time. The vision we had was well communicated and accepted from all those involved; from superintendent, foreman, crews, subcontractors, to management. The communication did not stop there. We had buy-in from the DOT with such an aggressive schedule knowing any issues would need to be handled at the lowest level if possible. It was great to have a team from owner and contractor that made this such a success. We had a dream, a vision and a team. Teamwork DID make this dream work! Fantastic job to everyone involved! It was an honor to see something so well planned come together with such ease and determination. 12

Utilities, Roadway Lighting & Road Construction
This project began November 4th, 2019 to widen SR 82 from Gator Slough Lane to SR 29, from a two-lane undivided roadway to a four-lane divided roadway. While allowing for a future sixlane roadway. Additional improvements on this 3.2 mile corridor include construction of 5-foot wide paved shoulders. Which will also serve as bike lanes, a 54-foot wide median, a 10-foot multi-use trail along the south side, and a 5-foot sidewalk along the north side. The intersection at SR 29 will be changed from a stop condition with a flashing beacon to a roundabout. The construction is expected to be completed by Summer of 2022. Project Write-up by: Joseph Dutton, Project Manager
SR 80 CONTRACT AMOUNT: $59 MILLION TONNAGE: 90,000
Project Write-up by: Elliott Kresse, Project Manager
This segment of SR-80 was the final piece of roadway needed to complete the now fully multi-lane highway from Fort Myers to West Palm Beach. Beginning in May 2017 and receiving final acceptance in August 2020, this 3 year project expanded an 11.5 mile stretch of road from 2-lane to 4-lane and included over 1,000,000 CY of embankment, 10 new bridges, and over 90,000 TN of asphalt. This improved roadway is now a much safer route than what it was, and provides a smooth alternate travel route for the traveling public making trips to and from the Florida coasts. Thanks to proper planning and execution, this job had zero deficiencies in the friction course. This project received the honor of being selected as #7 on the Roads & Bridges’ 2020 Top 10 Road Awards. There were a lot of hard working hands on this project – shout out to former Project Superintendent, Joe Dutton; former Project Manager, Clay Cross; Project Engineer, Jared Hardey; Paving Foreman, Lee Lamb and crew; Area 2 MOT Crews (Sam, Tommie, and A-Rod); and a huge thanks to the rest of the Area 2 staff involved to help make this project successful. Congrats on another job well done!

G U L F B O U L E VA R D The Gulf Boulevard project has been in the hands of Ajax since April 2018. Since being awarded the contract, Ajax teamed up with WGI to do a CSI (Cost Savings Initiative) where we re-engineered a portion of this project to save both the department and Ajax time and money. This project’s main initiative is to correct the existing drainage issue with standing/ponding water in the bike and pedestrian pathways along Gulf Blvd. This project spreads just over 3.1 miles going through both Indian Rocks and Indian Shores Beach. The project officially kicked off in November 2019 where our subcontractor Westra started working on the 12,000 Linear Feet of 8” outlet pipe and nearly 2000 LF of trench drains. To date, we are approximately 60% complete with the drainage work, and 25% complete with the ATPB replacement. Project Superintendent John Duncan and Grade foreman Andrew Cary have been critical parts of getting outside the box while building this project. We are on track to finish this job in Summer/Fall 2021. Project Write-up by: Isabell Troxell, Project Manager

SR 693 & SR 688 Resurfacing This project is located in Largo, FL in Pinellas County. SR 688, or Ulmerton Road, serves as a major east-west running corridor in the region connecting eastern Pinellas County with the Gulf Coast beaches. At the same time. SR 693 (66th Street) serves as major north-south running roadway through the heart of Pinellas County, making this intersection a key piece of the transit corridor in Pinellas County. The project consists of approximately 1.4 miles of resurfacing across six travel lanes on Ulmerton Road and four lanes on 66th St. This project will serve to improve the traveling experience for motorists for years to come with its design of using a high polymer friction course, not often used in the state. The project will also correct deficiencies with the cross slopes of the road through the intersection of Ulmerton and 66th with overbuild asphalt. In addition to the resurfacing work, the project also consists of improvements for pedestrians in the area by relocating existing sidewalk to a greater distance from a highly traveled roadway on 66th St and also drainage improvements in the area. 14

THATS A RAP In February of 2020, we were solicited by Lee County DOT to bid the Lehigh RAP Paving Project. We were awarded the project at $446,335 over Preferred’ s $472,644 bid and APS’s bid of $701,305. The general scope of work was to process 9,000 tons of asphalt millings that were supplied by Lee County and to “pave” those processed millings at an average depth of 2.5” on 22 roads throughout Lehigh Acres. Once the roads were paved, they were topped with a prime coat and sand covering. Prior to paving the roads, they had to be cleaned up, widened to 18’ average width, graded out and potholes filled in. Tim Smith and his crew of Matthew Bell and Cody Dahlberg were put to the challenge and completed the work 2 days ahead of schedule. The millings were located at LCDOT’s maintenance facility and were used on multiple milling projects throughout Lee County. Mickey Cox and his crew, Bill Gearhart and Carl Wright, were tasked to set up our crusher on the Felix Romano property and start processing the millings to a 3” minus. The processing of millings was challening due to a limited work area. Not only did they have minimal room to move equipment and load trucks, but they had to stockpile materials as well. Thanks to Manny Valle and Eugene Hamlin for keeping the crushing crew supplied with water. It was surely a full time task! With Matthew Bell’s help keeping the trucks loaded, Bill and Carl completed the setup, processing and break down in 13 days and averaged approximately 980 tons per day. Lee Lamb’s crew was next to start the RAP paving. Not only did they do a fantastic job but they completed their task 3 days ahead of schedule. They
placed an average of 1250 tons of millings per day. Huge accomplishment! We had no complaints from the “sidewalk superintendents” as they were stoked that their roads were finally getting maintained. Danielle Bentivegna was my saving grace as I had a few projects going simultaneously. Danielle took the reins and ran with this project. Danielle handled all of the daily phone calls, scheduling and communications with Lee County DOT. Along with some scheduling and construction guidance from Garrett Fons, this project went incredibly smooth. We completed the project ahead of schedule and under budget. A lot of the crews had never paved with millings before and they were excited to have a break from 315 degree asphalt. A couple of crew members even mentioned that they were shocked on how smooth of a final surface they were getting from 3” millings. Thank you to Dirk Danley and Jeremy Norvell from Lee County DOT for the work. Thank you Ariel Ortiz, Ajax QC, for keeping everything measured up. Thank you to Lee Lamb’s crew: Zachary Jahn, Terrell Burdette, Severe Clairfeus, Lawanna Stanley, Jose Garcia, Jesus Garcia, Jeffrey Stanley, Ezi Washington, Billy Ray Byers and Eric McDonald. Thank you Mark (Mouse) Gracie and Tom Pegg for getting the equipment to the job! That’s a RAP ! Lee Strauss, Estimator/PM

ASPHALT MANUFACTURING
FROM OUR PLANTS TO OUR 2020
has been a challenging year. Along with the inherent challenges of operating and maintaining a hot plant, we have had to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic. Even with these challenges we have been able to keep all of our plants open and operating throughout the year. This required operators and employees to work at multiple plants at times to keep them operating.
Photos from the addition of silos at Plant 4. We are excited that having six silos at Plant 4 will allow us to better supply our many customers and their needs.
View from the top of Plant 1 sent in by Safety Manager, Bob Kern
16
We have also had some upgrades and personnel changes at some of the plants. Plant 7 in Largo is currently working on the construction of a new control house for the plant. It will be finished in 2021. The silos at plant 4 have been installed and will be fully operational by early January 2021. We also have a new lab building at plant 4 and it should be done in early 2021. In October 2020, we began the site construction for our new plant facility in Lake Wales. Clay Cross, the Area Manager from Area 4 has been instrumental in managing the site construction for the plant. We are excited to open this new area in early 2021 with a new Astec plant. We look forward to working and supplying asphalt in this new market. There have been some personnel changes at the plants and we are excited to see employees within the company taking on new responsibilities.

Matt Vogel came from construction in 2020 and began his plant training at Plant 5 Odessa and has now moved to Plant 3 in Palmetto to be a plant operator. Joshua Ketnor, a new employee hired as a Loader Operator in 2020 is now training as a Plant Operator at Plant 6. Jasen Starks started as a Groundsman in 2015 at Plant 5 in Odessa and is now training to be a Plant Operator at Plant 5. Myrtis Harrison transferred from construction this year to the asphalt lab in Venice and is being trained as a Lab Technician. Alfredo Castro has become a member of the Committee of Asphalt Research and Technology (CART). Alfredo also received the Army Corp of Engineers and The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials certifications for his lab. Congratulations to Alfredo. This is a big accomplishment and very few labs get these certifications. I would like to give a special shout out to our great employees and their dedication, flexibility and hard work. Each plant employee performs a vital role in the success of the plants, and in turn, Ajax Paving.

PLANT 8 UPDATE IN
October 2020, Plant 8 officially broke ground. Our newest facility will service Central Florida and the Heartland. In addition to servicing a new batch of customers, Plant 8 will be the foundation for kicking off a new area office – Area 4. We are excited to have an opportunity to develop new markets, develop and grow new employees, establish new customers, and create new relationships in the market place. Scott Gilliard has moved from Area 1 to Area 4. Steve Francis, Superintendent, was hired in October 2020. We are all looking forward to the challenges and opportunities this area will bring for Ajax in 2021. Special thanks to Tim Smith (A2), Vinnie Ferrone (A1), Cody Dahlberg (A2), Wes Moore (A1), Pheneathius Brown (A1), and Charlie Prince (A1). ASPHALT MANUFACTURING
UPDATE ON AJAX MIX DESIGN & PERFORMANCE TESTING LAB CERTIFICATIONS
FOR
a couple of years now, all new mix designs and revisions of mixes that go through our plants have been done by Ajax in house with its own Mix Design lab. Our lab also has performance testing capabilities to analyze and predict mix performance in great detail. Due to our expanded testing capabilities, we have been involved in several studies and task forces with NCAT, FDOT, and private institutions. For 2020, we set out to take a new important leap in quality assurance for our Mix Design lab, that would be of great benefit for us and also for our customers. We decided to get our Mix Design lab certified through the strictest and most respected national agencies. The first we got was the AASHTO accreditation for our mix design lab procedures, which was finalized in August. The approval and certification process involved a thorough review of our lab policies, procedures, and performance of all the test methods that are done. It finalized with a full assessment that lasted three days in which more than 30 test methods for asphalt and aggregates were evaluated. This certification is also being constantly updated through periodic revisions, evaluations on performance of different samples that are sent for testing. As long as we are AASHTO certified, it will mean that our lab is currently up to par with the best standards out there.
We also received in October the certification from the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The USACE has their own certification process, and the certification process involved similar reviews as the one for AASHTO. There are currently very few labs in the region certified for mix designs from both of these agencies, and Ajax is one of those. Through these certifications we are expecting to offer an added level of confidence in the quality of the mixes that are designed and produced at Ajax. It will also make it easier for us to be involved in projects with different agencies where the specs require the mix designs to be developed only on certified laboratories.

TRANSPORTATION
has been the year of the unknown. For me, 2020 this was true in many ways. COVID-19 has the world in
a state of unknown. Ajax employees are no different. We’ve been fortunate to keep working, but always wondering, “When may Covid strike me?” Wondering how this is going to affect my family, my income, decisions, and so forth. Coming off a great 2019, I ask myself these questions, especially still being very new to Ajax. The questions are not always about the virus, but generally speaking about Ajax. The Transportation Division has a new concept in 2020. I’ve visited many plants, jobs, and offices. I realized how passionate people at Ajax are about Transportation. Trucking is key to “paving the way”. I also learned many people were wondering, “Who is Josh Campbell and what is he doing?” 2020 has been a transformative year for Transportation. Under the guidance of Ajax President Vince Hafeli, we’ve implemented multiple new technologies. My team of Dejan Vujaklija and Chuck Matukaitis (Trucking Superintendents), and Todd Johnson (Trucking Foreman) have led the way in implementing the below Transportation Division improvements.
🚜 Alloutward Ajax trucks (big and small) now have an facing camera. 🚜 Trucks also have the capabilities to create an automatic Electronic Log Book. 🚜 Using GPS technology, we can locate an asset in real-time, read mileage, check fuel consumption,
🚜 We can be current scheduling preventative maintenance and record-
keeping without having to call or wait for someone to let the shop know.
🚜 Plant integration helps with real-time transportation issues.
Many of our updates benefit the whole asphalt delivery process at Ajax. Construction has more transparency with trucking. Having these abilities allows Ajax to make informed decisions daily. We can also learn from our mistakes to prevent us from making them in the future. In closing, 2020 was a great year filled with unknowns. The Transportation Department got stronger with information, technology, and people. With 2020 coming to a close, I’m even more excited for 2021 and the bright future of Ajax. Josh Campbell, Transportation Manager
and more remotely.

Dashboard Cameras IN 2020
Ajax added dashboard cameras to the entire fleet of trucks (big and small). Vince Hafeli, Mandy Kustra, and Josh Campbell researched multiple companies and safety program options to ensure whichever solution Ajax selected would be the best fit for the company and its employees. Initially, we were focused on a dash cam offering, but when we started learning about Smart Drive’s managed service, where safety events are reviewed, prioritized and queued up for coaching on their behalf, it changed our perspective. After an extensive review, we decided on SmartDrive and the value of the managed service program. Other areas that helped in Ajax’s decision were SmartDrive’s easy coaching workflow, and the safety score platform. In addition to the safety benefits, we also wanted to use one suppler for its productivity and compliance needs. We wanted to eliminate other platforms, not add more.
SmartDrive’s convergence solution was the perfect choice. Using SmartDrive as the single hardware platform that powers video safety, compliance and productivity, the Transportation Division is able to
streamline all the data coming from the vehicle’s cab. The result will be a lower total cost of ownership, better business insights, improved operating efficiency and a safer fleet. Ajax is also getting telematics capabilities that will enable us to track vehicles, review historical trip data, define custom rules, and set alerts to quickly respond to situations that are most important to us. With SmartDrive we eliminate the riskiest driving that leads to collisions and drives costs up. We save time and deliver more effective driver coaching. Our fleet reduces collision frequency, lowers fuel consumption and operational costs, and brings our drivers home safely – everybody wins.

SAFETY MESSAGE
A
lthough 2020 has been a year of uncertainty, our safety department started strong. We were able to attend the 2-day FTBA Construction Conference in Orlando in February. The Conference has several helpful and interesting tracks that the attendee could choose from. The tracks included asphalt, concrete, emerging technologies, general session, major projects, and maintenance of traffic, safety, and structures. We had a strong showing with 33 employees representing Ajax at the conference. The Ajax safety department presented on nighttime work and PPE (personal protective equipment) at the OSHA 10 hour class held the day before the conference started. Ajax also had 4 attendees in the class who passed and received their certificate/card. Congratulations to Matt Ohley, Mario Lentsch, Danielle Bentivegna, and Jared Hardey. The Ajax safety department proudly continues to play a vital role in the FTBA safety committee and Mandy is the chair of the subcommittee for membership and marketing. The membership committee consists of Mandy Kustra and Eric Green from Ajax Paving, Alison Sanders from Ranger Construction, George Carr from Sims Crane, and Keith Stewart from Cemex. This team manned the FTBA safety committee booth where we encouraged new people to join. We raffled off several gift cards, Yeti coolers, and other gift baskets donated by fellow FTBA member companies and garnered a good amount of attention and interest. The committee proudly hosted the ATSSA national work zone memorial wall honoring lives lost in work zones. The FTBA safety committee has been active for 2 years and has been a great way for the Ajax safety department to create relationships and stay in touch with other contractors in the state of Florida. Ajax’s safety department looks forward to a safe 2021 and continued partnership with FTBA.

SAFETY
DOCUMENTING NEAR MISSES AND EXCELLENCE IN SAFETY WHAT IS A NEAR MISS?
OSHA defines a near miss as an incident in which no property was damaged and no personal injury was sustained, but where, given a slight shift in time or position, damage or injury easily could have occurred. Near misses also may be referred to as close calls, near accidents, accident precursors, injury-free events and, in the case of moving objects, near collisions.
WHAT A NEAR MISS ISN’T.
If the event led to property damage or bodily injury, it’s an incident. Where there wasn’t an event or action at all, most people use the terms hazard, safety concern, or unsafe condition. Reporting unsafe conditions is equally important, of course, and some companies roll hazards onto their near miss reporting form while others handle them separately. Often these incidents – while they may leave you shaken, laughing or with a “good story” to tell when you get home from work – often are not reported. No harm done, right? But by not reporting near misses, employees also are not doing anything to prevent more, potentially serious incidents from occurring in the future. Near misses occur every day in every industry, and most serious, catastrophic and loss-producing incidents are preceded by these warnings. As you can see from the safety pyramid below.
EMPLOYEE PARTICIPATION IS VITAL
While managers and executives strive for zero injuries, zero accidents and zero claims, we also may be doing their company a disservice. Rather than specifically pushing for zero accidents, we should be pushing for greater transparency and a culture of reporting. Employees should get a vibe from management that says to them, “We’re not perfect and we need to report everything in order to identify trends, learn from our shortcomings and implement new programs and procedures.” “If we are going to get to a level of excellence in safety, we have to measure what we don’t want to occur.”
AFTER ALL, A REPORTING CULTURE TYPICALLY IS A SAFE CULTURE.
oing f g e r a “If weto a level o ty, to getence in safeure s excellave to meaw ant we h t we don’t wha to occur.”

WHAT’S GOING ON AT AJAX
SMITH SYSTEM CLASSES
With Smith System, we have trained over 200 Ajax drivers. These classes are offered for all Ajax employees, including employees from trucking, management, construction and the plants. The goal is to educate with knowledge and tools to make better decisions behind the wheel. We have gotten great positive feedback from employees who have completed Smith System. We have even been told quite a few times employees have taken these concepts home to teach teenage drivers and other family members!
KAPNICK WELLNESS PORTAL: NEW YEAR, NEW GOALS! New in 2020 was the addition of the Kapnick Wellness Portal. This wellness portal has been implemented by Ajax to increase the health and wellness of all our employees. Starting in 2021, Ajax will be hosting quarterly competitions and challenging employees to track their exercise/ activity via the portal for a chance to win prizes. Keep an eye out for more information on the Quarterly Wellness Challenges! Let’s work together to set new goals and hold each other accountable on the path to wellness!
DO GOOD, SAVE LIVES In 2020, Ajax employees donated 28 units of blood through blood drives hosted by One Blood. Did you know 28 units will help the lives of 84 patients? In 2021, keep an eye out for information regarding when the Big Red Bus will be returning to an Ajax location near you. Giveaways such as t-shirts and gift cards are often added incentives for employees to donate and participate. Do good, save a life!

RETIREMENT The Man, the Myth, the Legend has Retired Written by, Scott Pittman
After 26 years of commitment to Ajax, Tom Daquanna has decided to throw his work boots in the trash! When I first got to Ajax in 1997, Tom was well on his way to becoming Area Manager of Area 3, which was in Palmetto back in those days. Little did Tommy know about how much of his free time I was about to take from him over the next few years, bending his ear while having a beer! I, as have so many through the years, went to Tom for his knowledge, guidance, patience and keen ability to always read the situation and handle accordingly. Then in 2004, we decided it made sense to merge Area 3 and Area 5, so we combined Areas in Tampa where Tom took on the challenge of Construction Manager for the entire group. This is where he was at his best and remained until retirement in December 2020. I am certain all of the top quality people we have here today in Tampa are a direct result of Tom’s leadership over the last 26 years. Enjoy it (I know you will) you have earned it! Thank You for everything!
Congrats on your retirement Tom!
Retirement. You Earned It. Now Enjoy It! Written by, Matt Horan
Bob “The Shredder” Popielarz has been with Ajax since 2000. At that time, he brought a high level of experience from his formative years paving for several outfits in Michigan. Bob was welcomed on board and relatively quickly moved into the Foreman position. Over his years at Ajax, Bob has paved enough road at 6” thickness to get him from Plant 1 all the way to his home in Manistee, Michigan! He had a “get-it-done” attitude and was greatly respected by his crew members and the Ajax family for almost two decades. Bob will surely be missed by everyone at Ajax and we wish him the best in the future and that he enjoys retirement. Godspeed, Bob!
Congrats on your retirement Bob! 26

COMMUNITY OUTREACH
A
jax Paving takes pride in giving back to the communities
we live and work in. What makes a great community outreach program is not only donating money but also donating sweat equity. At Ajax, our employees are not afraid to try new things, recommend new charities, and most definitely not afraid to get their hands dirty. 2020 was a challenging year for everyone. Ajax employees were ready to step up to the plate and give back anyway they could. Ajax participated in multiple food drives, toy collections, donations of services, sponsorships, and hands on volunteer work. Shout-out to our employees for getting involved and giving back!
Myakka River State Park Cleanup On Saturday, August 1, 2020, Ajax employees volunteered at Myakka River State Park. Volunteers spent the day focusing on invasive plant control, weeding, and disposal of air potatoes. In total the group put in 160 hours of volunteer time and sweat.
The Brotherhood Ride In the month of September, Ajax’s Ft. Myers and Venice offices collected donations and supplies for The Brotherhood Ride. The Brotherhood Ride is an organization that consists of firefighters, police officers, and EMS personnel who ride bicycles to honor first responders who have died in the line of duty. Their mission is to provide emotional and financial support for their families. The 2020 ride was dedicated to 25 Florida Fallen Heroes. Cyclists took the challenge of riding 500 miles over 7 days. FHP Officer, Greg Bueno presents at Ajax’s Safety Day and is a friend to the Ajax family. Ajax employees attended a press conference to show support. Thank you to all who donated!

Ajax Paving’s Fill-that-Truck Food Drive Ajax Paving hosted it’s first annual “Fill That Truck” Thanksgiving Food Drive in the Fall of 2020. In the past, Ajax has hosted holiday food drives but this year employees wanted to do it even bigger and better! Ajax Paving purchased 25 yellow drum barrels and had them placed at every Ajax shop, plant, and area office. Ajax also partnered with outside businesses and placed barrels at local restaurants, and locations within the community. Ajax also invited all subcontractors, customers, and vendors to donate via drop-off locations or online through Amazon. The goal was to fill an Ajax flow boy and drop off donations at each areas local food pantry. The Tampa donations benefited Metropolitan Ministries, Fort Myers donations benefited Gladiolus Food Pantry and Ajax’s North Venice donations benefited South County Food Pantry and The Charlotte County Homeless Coalition. In total Ajax donated 24,000 tons of food. Thank you to all of our employees and outside partners for making Ajax’s first annual “Fill that Truck” Thanksgiving Food Drive such a success!

CONSTRUCTION CAREER DAYS 2020 20, 2020, a group of Ajax employees ON February attended the 5th Annual Tampa Bay Construction
Career Days at Hillsborough County Fairgrounds. In total, Ajax had two learning labs, three pieces of equipment and an informative career center booth. The “Asphalt Cookie” learning lab was led by Alfredo Castro, Arielle Zazik and Mario Lentsch. Students were able to get hands on and create edible “asphalt” while Ajax employees explained how each “ingredient” represented an asphalt mixture. Ajax’s second learning lab was centered around equipment operation and safety. This lab was led by Mike Morgan, Jeffery Case Mumby, Andrew Cary and Stefan Maldonado. Andrew Cary said, “I had a great experience at construction career days, interacting with the students who may be working in the construction field someday. It was rewarding in many ways. Showing different equipment, explaining the daily procedures along with discussing safety topics. We made a point to express how our job is a high demand and how important the construction industry is to Florida’s infrastructure.”
Along with the learning labs, Ajax had a career center booth. The career center booth was led by Kara Coggins and Linda Bailey. They did a wonderful job answering any questions students had about Ajax. The ladies talked to so many interested students, they ran out of Ajax brochures, applications and of course candy! All in all, it was a great day and would not have been possible without the support of every Ajax volunteer. Way to represent the A-Team!

Women Raising the Bar
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
29, 2020, for the first time in Ajax Florida history, we were able to ON October invite ALL females that work at Ajax to a luncheon to discuss how Women
can Raise the Bar at Ajax. Jamie Simmons our Credit Manager and Mandy Kustra our Safety Director chaired the meeting. In all 31 Ladies were able to attend from noon until 3:00 at the Ajax Barn at our main office in Venice. After lunch, we each gave a brief description of how we came to Ajax and what our role is within the company. We were amazed to hear how many of the Ladies have been with the company for 10 plus years. Once we finished the introductions we had a general round table discussion on how we can get other females interested in applying to be a part of the Ajax family, how we can help more in the local communities, and what opportunities are available to those women who currently work at Ajax. It was great to hear ideas from women representing all levels of seniority and spanning all departments of the company. Everyone concurred that they would like to be a part of female representation for Ajax at local job fairs. We feel that all in attendance have a newfound respect for all women at Ajax and the key roles we each play. We plan to meet quarterly and set some detailed goals for next year. We want to thank everyone that attended and we look forward to seeing you at the next meeting in 2021.
Habitat For Humanity On October 20, 2020 a group of Ajax employees participated in Habitat for Humanity South Sarasota County Women’s Build Week. The ladies spent the day framing out the inside of a home, sawing wood, and installing windows. Shoutout to the employees who took the time to participate and get their hands dirty! Thank you to the following Ajax employees for participating: Jennifer Kline, Natalie Woody, Kara Coggins, Sandy Philipps and Sandy Figueroa.
