Da questo incontro nasce un progetto di viaggio consapevole, capace di cambiarti la vita Desertica, the pied piper of the Tadrart Rouge One side of the equation is Carlo Maver, musician and traveller. The other is part of the Algerian Sahara where time seems to have stood still. The two have combined in a mindful travel project capable of changing your life

A decine.

Before setting off into the desert, a stop at the market in Djanet is essential to buy the cloth needed to wrap around your head in perfect nomadic style. Four metres of fabric are enough to protect oneself from the sun, the sand and the extremely irritating desert flies

Forget everything you have ever read about the desert, because in the Tadrart Rouge, one of the most remote corners of the Algerian Sahara on the border between Libya and Niger, there’s every imaginable form of desert.

Dunes of the finest sand glowing red at sunset? Tick. Rocks sculpted by thousands of years of erosion?

Got it. Rock paintings dating back to the period of the “Green Sahara” (14,600–5,500 years ago), when the Sahara was a wooded savannah with lakes, rivers and giraffes? Dozens of them. The rest is silence and star-filled skies, like being immersed in some primordial

amniotic fluid, leaving you acutely aware of being a mere tiny speck in infinity, but also feeling strangely protected by all that vastness. Difficult to explain, extraordinarily easy to fall in love with.

Which is what happened to Carlo Maver, a musician from Bologna who has travelled frequently through these areas and has now created “Desertica”, his dream project, allowing people to experience the desert in its purest form, accompanied by the notes of his flute.

“I have always travelled extensively,” recalls Maver, “trying to truly experience travel rather than simply being a tourist. Here, in this corner of Africa, I fell in love with Tuareg culture and with the way they proudly defend their nomadic identity, even though the world around them has changed profoundly. Through

That’s the beauty of “Desertica”; what it lacks in creature comforts it more than makes up for in the emotions drawn from the depths of the soul — emotions that rarely surface in our ordinary lives.

Beyond the horizon Laigueglia, the centre of the world

Fra tradizioni secolari, ottima gastronomia e mare incontaminato Switching off in Laigueglia On the western Ligurian Riviera, Laigueglia is the perfect place to unwind, with its pristine sea - it’s a regular Blue Flag winner for its environmental quality - centuries-old traditions and superb cuisine

There are corners of the western Ligurian Riviera that seem to have escaped the frenzy of modern tourism. One of them is the small seaside town of Laigueglia in the province of Savona, where time still flows to the rhythm of the waves and the fishing boats.

Listed among Italy’s Most Beautiful Small Towns, Laigueglia has preserved all the charm of an ancient fishing community. Its pastel-coloured houses overlook the beach, while a maze of narrow alleyways leads visitors to quiet squares, stone arches

and hidden corners narrating centuries of history. Just follow your nose on a stroll through the historic centre to discover artisan workshops, small cafés and restaurants, and the enticing aromas drifting from Ligurian kitchens.

Between the 11th and 12th centuries, the little town experienced significant immigration from Catalonia, with people being attracted by the flourishing coralharvesting industry along the coastline around Capo Mele. The symbol of the town is the Church of San Matteo, with its distinctive twin bell towers dominating the seafront. Built in the eighteenth century, it is one of the most striking landmarks and stands as a testament to the deep bond between the local community and the sea.

The sea, indeed, is Laigueglia’s true protagonist. Its long sandy beach— something of a rarity along this stretch of Ligurian coastline— offers crystal-clear waters and gently shelving seabeds, making it ideal for families and anyone looking for a relaxed, rather than strenuous, vibe. At sunset, when the light reflects off the colourful façades lining the shore, the whole town is bathed in warm hues, creating the atmosphere of a

Jazz

La cittadina ospita da una trentina d’anni un apprezzato festival estivo The town has hosted a highly-regarded summer jazz festival for around thirty years

(www.acciugahotel.com)

In the name of the anchovy

Following an extensive renovation, one of the historic hotels overlooking Laigueglia’s seafront has reopened as a stylish four-star property, combining spectacular views with the level of comfort the Ligurian town has long needed. The chosen name for the new hotel, Acciuga Hotel (“Anchovy Hotel”), pays tribute both to the area’s seafaring heritage and to one of the undisputed stars of its local cuisine. Particularly noteworthy is the splendid panoramic terrace, where guests can admire the whole of Laigueglia. The terrace houses a bar which is also open to non-residents, making it the perfect place to watch the sunset while enjoying a wellcrafted cocktail or to savour a leisurely breakfast in the morning.

Every detail of the hotel reflects the colours of the sea, with sunlight flooding each room. The property is directly on the beach, making it an ideal retreat for anyone wishing to switch off completely and indulge in the soothing atmosphere of the Ligurian Sea. What more could you possibly want? (www.acciugahotel.com)

picture postcard from yesteryear. Laigueglia is also an excellent base for exploring the Ligurian countryside. Venture inland for just a few kilometres to find olive groves, medieval villages and panoramic walking trails winding between hills and sea, offering spectacular views of the coastline. The local gastronomic tradition completes the experience. Restaurants in the historic centre serve Ligurian specialities such as trofie with pesto, anchovies prepared according to traditional recipes, and dishes featuring freshly caught local fish. All are accompanied by extra virgin olive oil produced on the surrounding hillsides and wines from the region.

Visiting Laigueglia means rediscovering a form of authenticity that is becoming increasingly rare. There are no worldfamous monuments or spectacular attractions here; the true treasure is the atmosphere itself. It lies in the pleasure of a walk along the promenade, the sound of the waves on a summer evening, and the understated beauty of a little town that has managed to preserve its identity. It is a place to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace, surrendering to the simple and genuine charm of a truly authentic Liguria, with the notes of the jazz festival that takes over the town for a few days each summer providing the perfect soundtrack.

In South Tyrol, the Winkler family is synonymous with high-end hospitality. Their story began with the Lanerhof in San Lorenzo di Sebato (BZ), in the heart of the Puster Valley, a refined four-star superior hotel now flanked by Chalet Purmontes, an exclusive property with just five suites, each featuring a heated private pool and impeccable service centred on total privacy. And then there is the Winkler Sport & Spa Resort at Plan de Corones, a five-star design hotel focusing on active guests who appreciate luxury hospitality.

The latest addition to the Winkler portfolio is Solvie (www. winklerhotels.com/it/ hotel-solvie), located in Falzes, a peaceful village in the Puster Valley with views over the Kronplatz and within easy cycling distance of Brunico, in the heart of the Dolomites.

The style is modern alpine, with soft colours based on a palette of greys, whites and browns.

From 5 June to 12 September, the Verona Arena once again hosts its renowned Opera Festival. Now in its 103rd edition, the festival will offer three months of entertainment featuring more than 50 performances.

The season opened with an outstanding preview event broadcast worldwide live on Rai 1: Champions of the World – Italy Loves UNESCO, a special celebration combining great operatic masterpieces with a tribute to Italian cuisine, recently recognised as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage. In mid-June, the new production of Verdi’s La Traviata, directed by Paul Curran, made its debut. Set in early twentieth-century Paris, the production brings an iconic French institution to Verona for the first time: the Moulin Rouge, recreated on stage in spectacular fashion. Among the Verdi operas featured in the Festival are Nabucco (from 26 June to 9 September) and Aida (from 19 June to 24 July), both presented in Stefano Poda’s distinctive

interpretation.

The programme also pays tribute to tradition: from 30 July to 10 September, Aida returns in Franco Zeffirelli’s monumental classic production.

The opera schedule also sees two masterpieces by Giacomo Puccini: La Bohème, performed on four evenings between 3 and 25 July, and Turandot, running from 7 August to 11 September with Zeffirelli’s legendary sets.

A wide range of special events further enriches the Festival, from Roberto Bolle and Friends performing to the music from Carmina Burana, as well as immersive Viva Vivaldi experiences and, in its world premiere, Paganini Paradise.

Dance also features prominently at the Roman Arena, where audiences can enjoy Zorba the Greek.

Something for Everyone

Following the success of previous editions, Arena per Tutti (“The Arena for All”) returns this year. The initiative focuses on sensory accessibility and offers specially designed experiences for visitors with disabilities.

And this year young audiences are being more closely catered for with the launch of the Family Area, a space created entirely for children and their parents. In addition, thanks to the renewed partnership with UniCredit, all under-30s can purchase tickets for just €30. Corporate hospitality experiences are also back, ranging from gourmet dinners to wine-tasting events at the Gran Guardia.

Breaking the ould An exhibition dedicated to painter Nino Springolo is currently being held at the Bailo Museum in Treviso

Fuori dagli schemi

Landscapes, portraits, still lifes, and a final room entitled The Two Companions, inspired by the novel by Giovanni Comisso, which explores the artist’s relationship with Gino Rossi and Arturo Martini. The current exhibition at the Museo Bailo in Treviso aims to shed light on one of the most reserved, yet pivotal, figures in early twentieth-century Venetian art, helping visitors understand the depth and singularity of his paintings. Nino Springolo was,

in fact, an artist who defied categorisation and cannot easily be pigeon-holed in any single movement. He studied the fragmented chromaticism of the Post-Impressionists, experimented with Divisionist techniques, absorbed the lessons of Cézanne, and pondered on the old masters, eventually arriving at a style of painting that appears almost naïve at times. Each and every influence was filtered, refined and reinterpreted in a highly personal way, grounded in a constant inner search that sought not to amaze, but rather to establish an intimate, contemplative relationship with the viewer.

Springolo’s proverbial slowness of execution

Martini

— he produced no more than five or six paintings a year — was not a limitation but a method. “I produced little because I always worked a great deal,” was the artist’s own explanation.

Of the approximately one hundred works on display in Treviso, the landscapes are perhaps the most popular. From the early Divisionist experiments (19131914) to the pastels of

Onè di Fonte (19191925), and through to the canvases of the 1950s, Springolo used nature as a medium for his observations and meditations. This section reveals not only his deep attachment to Treviso, its waterways, the lagoon and the Malamocco district, but also his personal assimilation of Cézanne’s teachings, evident in his “solid works” built on volume and structured form, which anticipate his development towards a rational, modern naturalism.

The section devoted to portraits, a lesser known but fundamental aspect of his work, highlights preparatory studies such as those for Davi bambino (Child Davi, 1923), demonstrating the importance of lines as the structural backbone of the

image. Springolo abandoned all twentieth-century rhetorical conventions in favour of a language rooted in everyday life, capable of expressing the delicacy of family figures and the people of the Treviso community. The exhibition then moves on to the still lifes, often featuring everyday objects from the kitchen or his studio. Here, Springolo’s reflections on “coloured shadows” and tonal contrasts are

explored, revealing an entirely personal balance between the French and Venetian traditions. The last room examines Springolo’s relationship with two of the leading figures of the Venetian avantgarde, Gino Rossi and Arturo Martini. Martini represented a model of creative strength, while Rossi provided crucial support; yet Springolo clearly emerges as an independent, profound, creative force within that artistic period.

The exhibition also references his connections with other central figures in the cultural life of Treviso and the Veneto, including his cousin Giovanni Comisso. An exhibition not to be missed, open to the public until 1 November.

His Majesty the Caplèt A journey through the stuffed pasta traditions of Italian cuisine: focus on the Ravenna cappelletto

Stuffed pasta is deeply woven into the culture of Emilia-Romagna, and there is certainly no shortage of choice, from Bolognese tortellini, to agnolotti, anolini from Piacenza and ravioli from Modena. But to get the full picture you need to head to Porto Fuori, a small town in the province of Ravenna with a population of just over 5,000. A place that would rarely attract attention were

it not for the Sagra de Caplét, a festival created in honour of this local speciality now celebrating its sixteenth edition and hosted this year from 18 to 21 September. Organised by the Associazione Comitato Sagre Porto Fuori, the event has grown over the years as a way of preserving and celebrating the Caplét — the local word for cappelletto — which is still handmade today to recipes passed down through generations. Unlike the tortellino, the traditional Romagnolo cappelletto contains no meat, but instead a rich filling of cheeses,

typically Parmigiano Reggiano, ricotta, raviggiolo, eggs and nutmeg. But a number of variations are considered legitimate, as shown by the many local interpretations: the Ravenna-Cesena tradition generally rejects meat entirely; the Forlì version is more open-minded; while the traditions of Rimini, San Marino and Pesaro positively insist upon it — and demand no fewer than three types of meat: pork, veal and capon. While territorial disputes may still rage over the filling, there is broad agreement on one point: cappelletti reach their finest expression when cooked in broth — traditionally made with a hen or capon and a

small amount of lean beef. Even so, they are very often served with a variety of sauces too, the most common being a pork ragù. Preparing the 1,600 kilograms of cappelletti consumed during the four days of the festival calls for more than 45 volunteers, working in shifts over twenty plus days of intense preparation, as Riccardo Severi, the festival’s patròn, proudly recalls. And the pasta? Rolled out strictly by hand into sheets with a rolling pin.

The pasta is then blastchilled and frozen before being served with ragù, in broth, baked pasticciatistyle, or simply with butter and nutmeg.

Last year almost 6,000 diners were served, but in 2026 the organisers hope to surpass that record.

So, head for Porto Fuori and its delicious Caplét and for more information the festival’s Facebook page is “sagradecaplet.it”.

Il mix con cui si è imposta in Italia ed è sbarcata tra i professionisti a stelle e strisce Head first Basketball might be increasingly physical, but Costanza Verona stands out thanks to the speed she moves at and the speed she thinks at. A combination that has seen her make her mark in Italy and earn a place among the professionals in the United States

– ph credits: Luca Taddo, Famila Basket Schio

Tempo libero Free time

“Thanks to the EuroLeague, the league championship and international matches, I’ve played against almost all the WNBA players. I know how difficult it is, but I’m confident I can play at the highest level”

Senza sosta

Non-stop

“My off-season is work, work and more work. I’m so busy during the season there’s no time for individual training sessions, so I go back to Palermo and train with a personal coach”

Challenges can be harbingers of joy to people spurred on to work ever harder in pursuit of their goals. And motivation has been the key ingredient in the way Costanza Verona has always approached basketball, drawn by the joys of dribbling and the chance to lead a team from her relatively diminutive height of 170 centimetres. Key drivers are energy, determination and intelligence, the qualities that help sense the right moment and outpace opponents. Playing one step ahead of her opponents, with all due respect but no fear, the 27-year-old from Palermo quickly rose to the top ranks of Italian basketball. Her journey took her from Battipaglia in the south of Italy, to Turin and Sesto San Giovanni in the north before arriving in Schio in 2021, where she rapidly became a cornerstone of Italy’s most successful club. Over the past five years she has helped the club win four league titles, five Italian Cups and three Super Cups. Costanza has grown steadily as a player during her career, playing in the Italian national team and recently crowned by the call-up from the Dallas Wings for her WNBA debut.

Capro espiatorio

“Quando devono sfogarsi, spesso i coach gridano contro di me perché sanno che non me la prendo. Così le compagne non ne risentono” Scapegoat

“The coaches often shout at me when they need to let off steam, because they know I won’t take it personally. That way the other players are in the clear”

Passioni extrasportive

Sport and more

“I love Blink-182 and I read constantly — so much so that I packed more than 20 books in my bag for Dallas”

“A player I admire? Watching Caitlin Clark move is incredible — everyone gets excited when she is on the court”

Costanza, was it love at first sight with basketball, or a more gradual romance?

“It was my first love straight away, ever since I was little. I was hyperactive and loved all sports — I did swimming for a couple of years too. But the choice was obvious, because once I discovered basketball through my older sister, it was clear that I enjoyed it and that I had a natural aptitude for it.”

From Sicily to glory with the Famila Schio team, then the national team and now the WNBA in Dallas: what’s your secret?

“I’m not tall, I’m not particularly muscular, and many people don’t think I even look like a basketball player. But I’m quick on the court, physically and mentally, and I have a very strong work ethic. I like working hard, I watch and learn from more experienced players and listen to advice.”

How do you feel about starting from scratch again in the United States?

“Persevering despite difficulties is the most important lesson I’ve learned through experience. After making a name for myself in Italy I have to earn my place all over again in the WNBA, and going back down the pecking order is never easy. But I know I’ll get a chance to shine, and I work every day to be ready to seize it.”

What is the biggest difference you have noticed in American basketball?

national team change gear?

“Our goal at this year’s World Cup? We’re humble. The group draw with the USA, the Czech Republic and China is tricky, but we’re going in fighting and will be doing our best”

“The difference between the US and Europe is in the way things are organized. In the US we travel on charter flights with private access at the airport, we have seven coaches, five physiotherapists and even a chef travelling with us. The same applies to the facilities, we have perfect courts with a whole team dedicated to every detail so that players can focus exclusively on the game. I’d been told about it, but experiencing it first-hand is still impressive. On the other hand, the game itself is faster and more physical, so you have to learn to play at different rhythms and levels of intensity.”

A bronze medal at the 2025 European Championships and qualification for this September’s World Cup in Berlin: how did the

“The credit goes to the clubs that invest in Italian players, because that means we play important matches and are ready for big occasions. Then there’s our team spirit and the chemistry we have built over time. It is not easy to accept a minor role in the national team when you are used to having major responsibilities at club level, but after the disappointment of the 2023 European Championships we took a long, hard look at ourselves and started to trust one another more. We no longer rely solely on Cecilia Zandalasini, because now everyone knows what they can and must do.”

The mind is the engine that drives the legs: how did you learn to max your mental impact?

“I worked for three years with Gabriele Bani, Giorgia Sottana’s mental coach. Giorgia has inspired me as a player and I am proud to call her a friend. She suggested I try it in order to improve as a person and an athlete, so I worked on managing my emotions, because as a point guard you need to be composed and clear-headed.”

What’s on your radar for the future?

“I hope the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles are part of it. The Olympics are the ultimate goal for any athlete, and my dream.”
