AIA College of Fellows Founded in 1952, the College of Fellows is composed of members of the Institute who are elevated to Fellowship by a jury of their peers. Fellowship is one of the highest honors the AIA can bestow upon a member. Elevation to Fellowship not only recognizes the achievement of the architect as an individual, but also elevates before the public and the profession those architects who have made significant contributions to architecture and to society.

Message from the National Chair
What Exactly is a College of Fellows Regional Representative? Jon Penndorf, FAIA
W
e are the AIA College of Fellows. As a college, we have the commonality not just of a profession or career, but the special recognition that our individual contributions to the built world have had significant impact. This impact, the “ripple effect” which is sometimes referenced in the application process, is so valued that our singular professional organization recognizes individual members for elevation into the college annually. The impact does not stop at elevation, though. AIA Fellows are necessary for the cultivation of the future of the profession. This is central to the mission – Fellowship is about bettering the profession through giving back. We do this in many ways, formally and informally, nationally and locally. AIA needs the collective wisdom, experience, and influence of the Fellows and at times calls upon the college for guidance and leadership. How does that call arrive? The COF Regional Reps are that conduit. These Reps are spread geographically around the nation (and world), regionally representing the thousands of AIA Fellows in the college. Our Reps are volunteer leaders, giving back to the profession by serving a three-year term. The primary role for a Regional Rep is one of communicator, ensuring messages are shared from the membership to COF leadership as well as requests for input and guidance received from AIA National that need to be transmitted to the general membership. The Reps can do this in a variety of ways.
• As a group, the Regional Reps meet virtually several times a year to discuss issues important to the College and to Fellows, and your Reps can raise concerns to the group. These conversations are shared with the COF Executive Committee for further consideration and potential action. Additional communication among the group occurs via email throughout the year. • Regional Reps also contribute to the Fellows Quarterly newsletter and are one of our best ways to learn about successful programs and events happening locally around the Institute. • Our Regional Reps assist the Institute in keeping our master AIA Fellows list current. This includes updating contact information when people move or retire, and sharing when a member passes. Reps will often reach out to family and colleagues of passed members to offer condolences on behalf of the college. • Newly elevated Fellows may get a special welcome note from Regional Reps. We want to ensure our newest members are recognized and celebrated! • You may from time to time get direct emails from your Regional Reps, offering updates and requesting information or volunteer time. Some regions have more structured communications than others, but there is often a need to solicit ideas and feedback for future works of the organization. In addition to communication, Regional Reps also assist in fundraising for the College of Fellows Fund. The Fund is made possible by the generosity of our members, and the money raised goes directly to support the good work of the college. The annual Component Grant program and the Latrobe Prize are both made possible by the Fund. The College of Fellows is a robust group, made so by its members. We want to ensure AIA Fellows are informed and engaged. Your Regional Reps are here to get us there. You should feel free to reach out to your Regional Reps directly when you have questions or ideas about the college or would like to get more involved. This special issue of the Quarterly focuses on these fantastic volunteer leaders. Read on to learn more about who they are and how they can help you maximize your membership in the AIA College of Fellows.

OBJECTIVES 1. Generate college awareness: what it stands for, its missions, the benefits of membership and how to become a part of it. 2. Encourage participation: (acting and giving) among existing Fellows. 3. Inspire professional growth: among recently licensed Architects through Fellowship within the Institute. 4. Influence AIA components: to act as channels for disseminating messaging and information about the college. 5. Share Best Practices: that promote the work within your region and serve as a resource for others in your position across the Institute. 6. Speak Up: to represent the interests, opinions, and needs of the Fellows in each region to COF leadership. 7

COLLEGE OF FELLOWS FUND Help make our programs and grants possible by donating or honoring someone with a gift today!
MISSIONS OF THE COLLEGE OF FELLOWS 1. Promote Research & Scholarly Work • The Latrobe Prize: Bi-Annual Research Grant of a $150,000 to support a two-year program of research leading to significant advances in the architecture profession. • Upjohn Grants: annual research grants of $15,000–$30,000 for applied research projects that enhance the value of design and professional practice knowledge. 2. Mentor Young Architects & Emerging Professionals • Supporting two-way mentoring programs dedicated to lifelong learning and leadership • AIA College of Fellows Component Grants: annual program grants of up to $8,000 to local and state AIA components to develop, enhance, or launch initiatives related to the theme for that year. • Align Mentorship Program: a long-range initiative that connects architects within their first ten years of licensure with AIA Fellows. Through a grouping system referred to as “pods”, the program pairs four to six young architects with two to three fellows, facilitating professional and leadership development. 3. Fellows Fund for Equity Jeff Hausman, FAIA
A
Fellow, Elisabeth Knibbe, FAIA established an endowed fund with the Michigan Architectural Foundation (MAF) in 2023. The AIA Michigan Fellows adopted the fund at the end of 2023, and it was renamed the Fellows Fund for Equity (F2E). Currently the AIA Michigan Fellows are working to grow the fund with annual contributions. A yearly grant is awarded to a recently licensed architect that is actively practicing in Michigan that has remaining student debt. The grant provides financial assistance to pay down the debt. The first grant was awarded in 2024 at $4,000. The grant for 2025 was $4,500 and the grant in 2026 will be $5,000. The goal is to continue increasing the grant funding each year and/or create a second grant. Along with the grant is one year of mentorship from an AIA Michigan Fellow. The AIA Michigan Fellows believe the grant will assist in keeping underrepresented populations in the profession and assist in developing future leaders for of the profession. The F2E grant is for recently licensed architects that have shown leadership, perseverance and creativity to overcome barriers to becoming a practicing architect in the State of Michigan. The stated goal of the grant is to assist newly licensed Black, Hispanic, Native American and other individuals from underrepresented groups in the profession. Specifically, the grant is intended to assist with reducing

their outstanding student debt and/or as reimbursement for expenses associated with the licensing exams. The first awardee was Anne Doornbos, AIA. Anne was a scholarship winner from MAF in 2015 and was awarded the Fellows Fund for Equity grant in 2024. Anne has been very active in the AIA Grand Rapids chapter raising money for scholarships and then stepping into chapter leadership roles. In 2025 she was AIA Grand Rapids president. One of the programs that drew the attention of the Fellow Fund for Equity committee was her work to assist in securing a College of Fellows grant for the AIA Grand Rapids mentoring program, “Thrive”. Thrive is a program of mentorship that matches AIA Fellows and other senior members of west Michigan with early to mid-career professionals. Anne’s fellow mentor for 2025 was Dan Pitera, FAIA. Dan is Dean of the School of Architecture and Community Development at University of Detroit Mercy (UDM). The second awardee is Odette Giorgees, RA. Odette was a MAF scholarship recipient in 2023 and quickly worked to become a licensed architect. She received her license in September 2025 and was awarded the grant in October 2025. During her time at UDM Odette was president of NOMA. She is an immigrant and first-generation college graduate. As

noted in her reference letter from the president of Gateway Engineering, Dr. Joseph Vaglica, PE – “Odette exemplifies the very qualities this fellowship (grant) seeks to support – persistence, leadership creativity and a commitment to equity in the profession. She not only elevates those around her but embodies the future of architectural leadership: inclusive, community-driven and forward looking.” Odette coordinates the continuing education programs at Gateway and is developing NCARB licensure resources for her peers. She regularly gives back to academia through lectures and critiques at Wayne State and UDM.

This program can be easily replicated in other chapters and regions. Lis followed the lead of AIA New York in establishing the grant framework. MAF consulted with a tax attorney to make sure the grant is not taxable to the recipient. My role as COF Regional Rep is to get the AIA Michigan Fellows to support growing the F2E fund and solicit applications from recently licensed architects. I created the graphic above that MAF, AIA Michigan and chapters and sections across the State/Region use to encourage applications. I have also presented the opportunity at an AIA Detroit emerging professionals meeting.

Medina Triennial Joyce Hwang FAIA
F
or two centuries the Erie Canal has structured trade, settlement, and regional exchange. That commercial role has largely receded, yet the corridor remains intact, continuous, and spatially powerful. What is underway now is a process of rediscovery: learning to read the existing infrastructure not as remnant of industry, but as the foundation of a recreational and civic network. The task is interpretive as much as physical. It requires reconditioning how communities understand the Canal and activating it through programming that reveals its capacity as a public connector. The Medina Triennial is a new contemporary art triennial initiated in partnership with the New York Power Authority (NYPA) and the New York State Canal Corporation (NYSCC) to amplify the arts ecosystem in Western New York, and as part of a broader effort to revitalize the Erie Canal. The inaugural Triennial is directed by curator Kari Conte, with Karin Lansoo - both serving as co-artistic directors. Along with arts leaders in the region, I served on the Triennial’s steering committee and is now a member of its inaugural board. The Medina Triennial serves as a catalyst for that shift. By working directly with the Canal and surrounding urban fabric through site-responsive installations, public programming,

and the year-round presence of the Hub, it reframes this corridor as lived and participatory space. Cultural activation becomes the mechanism through which inherited infrastructure is repurposed for contemporary recreational use. The program does not replace what exists; it reveals and amplifies it, encouraging the vision of the canal as a linear park and connective spine. At the same time, the initiative responds to demographic realities shared by many rural canal communities. Distance from major urban centers and population contraction require cultural and economic thinking that extends beyond hyperlocal boundaries. The Triennial approaches the canal as a regional system and operates within broader catchment areas rather than a single village. By positioning Medina within a network of institutions and audiences linked by the canal corridor, the program advances a model of planning that aligns recreation, identity and economic activity across the system as a whole. Drawing from Medina’s rich cultural and ecological histories, the Triennial supports long-term research, site-responsive commissions, and collaborations that position small-town geographies as vital sites of cultural and critical imagination. The Triennial will bring 35 artists and collectives to Western

New York in 2026 to participate in a town-wide exhibition and series of public programs. While the Medina Triennial itself has not yet taken place, its impacts can already be felt in the Western New York region, as preparations are underway.
Since its opening in September 2025, the Medina Triennial Hub has been serving as the primary workspace for Triennial staff and has already hosted many weeks of public programming, including talks and workshops by both local and international artists. Located in a town of around 6,000 people, the Hub has already had 2,350 visitors to date.
As a steering committee and board member, I helped develop the early stages of planning of the event, including serving as an advisor on selecting the Triennial’s curatorial directors. More recently, I facilitated collaborations between the Triennial and the University of Buffalo (UB) School of Architecture and Planning that envisioned the Triennial Hub, a space that serves as a welcome and information center for visitors, as well as a workspace for Triennial staff. Working closely with project sponsors and Triennial curators and stakeholders, I guided the process of selecting UB Architecture faculty to lead the project – Maia Peck and Gregory Serweta, AIA – and followed through by helping shepherd the development and design-build process. I connected international artist James Beckett and UB faculty Nicholas Bruscia to help initiate a collaborative process involving Professor Bruscia’s undergraduate design studio with the Triennial.

Passion, Practice, Purpose:
How Architects Shape Meaningful Careers Laura Heim, FAIA, LEED AP
AIA Brooklyn's has recently grown to have a large number of young architects and is invigorating its committees and programming. When the recently formed Women in Architecture Committee (WIA) was searching for a program to highlight both women in architecture and Fellowship, I was approached to advise in the development of an event that would assist in exposing younger architects to the process of Fellowship. On October 20, 2025, we held a lively panel discussion called "Passion, Practice, Purpose: How Architects Shape Meaningful Careers" at the Pratt Institute. This highly successful panel included seven Fellows who spoke about their professional path leading to this notable recognition. The program introduction was given by WIA committee co-chair, Gemma Devesa Gasco, AIA and then I presented an overview of the Fellowship process before the panelist presentations.

Each panelist was then given seven minutes to describe, with images, their career path. The audience, predominately young women, included students, faculty, AIA Brooklyn members and other young architects and aspiring architects. The Q & A was lively. At the reception afterwards, several attendees commented that the program made them aware of a more diverse range of career paths available for architects. Having one fellow from each Object helped make that apparent. The feedback was very positive and the AIA Brooklyn intends to make it an annual event, and not necessarily only women fellows in the future. The achieved goal was to mentor young professionals and increase the general understanding of the fellowship process. I applaud AIA Brooklyn WIA committee for all the dedicated work it took to organize this event.

The Origin and Evolution of ASPIRE
Enriching the Conference Experience Beyond Education
The story of ASPIRE dates back to 2015, when I served as the volunteer chair for AIA’s National Convention in Atlanta. During this time, I was able to engage with forward-thinking leaders who were shaping the future of the conference industry. Traditionally, the South Atlantic region hosted a biannual conference for its members, in addition to the annual state conferences. I recognized an opportunity to consolidate these efforts and, more importantly, to elevate our regional conference into an event that would be more relevant, inspiring, and engaging for our members – an EXPERIENCE. This vision became the foundation for what would eventually become ASPIRE.
Beyond the diverse array of educational sessions, the ASPIRE Conference enhances the attendee experience by offering inspirational keynotes, along with curated local artisan tours (which provide opportunities to explore Asheville’s creative community firsthand). Participants can also engage in sketch workshops, fostering artistic expression and handson skill development. Additionally, the conference hosts numerous social gatherings at local downtown venues and celebrations throughout Asheville’s lively downtown, encouraging connection and camaraderie among attendees in an energetic and inspiring setting.
In 2017, I brought together AIA’s regional leadership team and presented the concept of creating a transformative conference experience. The goal was to move away from the conventional conference center setting and actively engage with the local community. We aimed to bring together a diverse group of industry professionals and thought leaders, fostering meaningful dialogue on timely and relevant topics. This approach encouraged conversations that extended beyond traditional presentations, leading to the introduction of our signature ‘Aspire Talks’ and ‘Aspireside Chats’.

Through this collaborative effort, we established a unique and enduring brand that continues to resonate and grow within our community. ASPIRE Conference Participation and Growth Since 2019, the ASPIRE Conference has been held annually each September in Asheville, NC. The event serves as a major gathering for AIA members from GA, NC, and SC. In addition to architects, the conference attracts leaders from allied professions, offering a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration and professional development.
Over the years, ASPIRE has expanded its reach and impact. Participation has grown to include AIA members from Kentucky and Tennessee, further strengthening regional partnerships. This growth reflects the conference’s commitment to fostering connections across state lines and building a vibrant, inclusive community of industry leaders. ASPIRE’s Focus on Resilience and Climate Action In recent years, the ASPIRE curriculum has grown and places a strong emphasis on the themes of resilience and climate action—areas where architects can make a significant difference. This focus is directly aligned with AIA’s strategic plan, underscoring the profession’s responsibility in addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing our communities.

The importance of engaging with the Asheville community has never been greater, particularly as the city continues its journey of disaster recovery. It is vital for architects not only to be included but to take a leading role in the critical conversations surrounding disaster preparedness and recovery. By doing so, architects help ensure that these dialogues translate into meaningful action and long-term community resilience. The discussions taking place today at ASPIRE are instrumental in shaping the development of resilient communities for the future. Building on this commitment, the 2025 ASPIRE conference expanded its curriculum to include a dedicated climate symposium, further reinforcing ASPIRE’s leadership in advancing climate-responsive design and recovery practices.

Vision for Future Growth and Industry Collaboration Looking ahead, my aspiration is for ASPIRE to evolve beyond its current role as a conference primarily serving architects. The goal is to broaden its scope to encompass the wider design and construction industry, fostering deeper and more meaningful partnerships with a range of allied professionals. This expansion would actively welcome interior designers, landscape architects, and developers who are committed to responsible growth, among others. By building these connections, ASPIRE can further strengthen its position as an inclusive and collaborative forum dedicated to advancing the built environment.
