AIA College of Fellows Founded in 1952, the College of Fellows is composed of members of the Institute who are elevated to Fellowship by a jury of their peers. Fellowship is one of the highest honors the AIA can bestow upon a member. Elevation to Fellowship not only recognizes the achievement of the architect as an individual, but also elevates before the public and the profession those architects who have made significant contributions to architecture and to society. 2

hope that all of you have been enjoying this summer with your families in good health and happiness. We were hopeful that the pandemic would be a distant memory, but I remain optimistic that with our continued joint perseverance, we will finally be able to move forward. Our thoughts also go out to all who were affected by the devastating effects of Ida…. prolonged power outages, flooding, damage to property and most importantly loss of precious lives. Our hearts are saddened to what many have had to endure.

Your College of Fellows Executive Committee has been extremely busy over these past months: •

In mid-June, we met in person for the first time in over 18 months, in Birmingham-Bloomfield, Michigan

We had two full days of meetings where the following agenda items were discussed: − Latrobe Prize – Jury update − Investiture Planning − EP Component Grants − Young Architects Awards − Newsletter Update − COF Regional Rep Structure / formation of Task Force to explore options now that AIA will re-organize into a state structure − Review of Agenda for COF Business Meeting − Update on budgeting and annual contributions We sponsored a wonderful reception for 5

Fellows and their guests at the office of ROSSETTI in downtown Detroit. It allowed us to network with local architects and celebrate three new Fellows from Michigan by presenting them with their COF pin! We also were honored to take a walking tour of Cranbrook, Saarinen’s masterpiece campus in Bloomfield Hills, to learn directly about a truly integrated approach to design through the collaboration of the Saarinen family as they jointly fashioned a magnificent historical treasure.

Also, on 16 June 2021, Jeanne Jackson, FAIA, our Chair of the Council of Regional Representatives organized a virtual meeting with all Regional Reps with our ExCom. This is now a quarterly event and allows a wonderful opportunity for dialog with our valued Reps who truly are the grassroots link to our Fellows.

On 30 June 2021, our 2021 COF Business Meeting was held virtually with over 300 of you participating * It was especially gratifying to see so many “first-timers” in attendance! * This was the second year of conducting our Business meeting virtually. Due to the wonderful attendance both years, our ExCom is definitely planning on continuing this new “tradition” as it truly does allow a much broader audience * We were also pleased to have you endorse our newest member of the Executive Committee, Kate Schwennsen, FAIA as our 2022 Secretary.

In early August, our ExCom met in person at Mackinac Island, Michigan in conjunction with the AIA Michigan Mid-Summer Conference * AIA Michigan has sponsored this conference for 78 years * With over 200 attendees, it was another perfect opportunity to network with architects and Fellows from throughout Michigan * Along with our ExCom, national AIA was also well represented with three Former President’s also in attendance (Gene Hopkins, FAIA, Kate Schwennsen, FAIA and RK Stewart, FAIA) – and two Former Chancellors (Ed Vance, FAIA and Peter Kuttner, FAIA) * Agenda items discussed at our business sessions included: − Final Jury Selection for the Latrobe Prize − EP Component Grants and YA Awards − Selection of New Editor for Newsletter − Final Investiture Planning − AIA Governance Week and COF activities − COF Standard Operating Procedures − COF Regional Task Force – initial meeting

− Our time at Mackinac culminated with a tribute to Peter and Elaine Kuttner! − Peter, our 58th Chancellor, led our College virtually for his entire leadership year. − He and his wife Elaine were always so positive even though many of the plans for their year had to be altered due to the pandemic. − Other than Peter’s Inauguration in December 2019, our Executive Committee met virtually with Peter throughout 2020. − As is traditional, the Executive Committee conducts a dinner tribute to the outgoing Chancellor, typically in December after the new Chancellor is Inaugurated. − Obviously, with the on-going pandemic, my Inauguration in December 2020 was also done virtually and did not give us the opportunity to celebrate and thank Peter and Elaine in person. − So we decided to do this at our Mackinac Meeting! (See summer meeting article). We now look forward to Wednesday 8 December 2021 in Washington DC for our joint Investiture of the 2020 and 2021 New Fellows! Peter and I will co-host this event.

consider renewing your commitment to the College of Fellows with your annual contribution so that we can continue to enhance our commitments to our three major missions: − Mentoring of Young Architects and Emerging Professionals − Focus on Scholarly Research, and − Sustaining the College With our new donation web-site, the task to contribute has been greatly simplified. Finally, the Call for “Nominations and SelfNominations” for the next Bursar on the College of Fellows Executive Committee will be issued in our December Newsletter. The deadline for receipt of these nominations will be 8 February 2022. Stay tuned later for the details! REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE CHAIR’S MESSAGE Recognizing the flurry of activity as Fellows candidates push to the finish line on their submittal preparations

Hi Friends! Here we are at the height of Fellowship Submittal Preparation time. I imagine a good number of you are busily working on reference letters for your remarkable colleagues. Or perhaps you’re a Sponsor for someone you think of highly? That’s a big job. Others of you may be on local Honors & Awards Committees, helping to critique local candidate submissions, or answering questions from those feverishly working away to meet the

October deadline. Whatever the case, there’s a real energy in the air this time of year. The excitement will continue to build until 5 pm EST on October 5th, when the Submission period closes. I encourage ALL Fellows to be resources for our deserving peers; please try to encourage your colleagues who may be too modest to submit for Fellowship to do so. Sometimes people can use a little cheerleading and affirmation to go

down this path. So, if you’re a Member of the College of Fellows, try to be helpful. Remember when you first thought you might apply, and wondered, “Have I done enough to advance our profession?” Or when you put together your first draft. It can seem overwhelming. It may also be useful to contact your Regional Rep to the College if there are questions from aspiring candidates that you can’t answer about the process. Remember also that there are a number of resources available to you and to candidates. For example, the College has a useful presentation that can be accessed on ISSUU. Find it here (And yes, it has 2018 as part of the link, but I promise it’s the 2022 version!) You can also visit here for frequently asked questions and other info. As we joyfully prepare to celebrate the Investiture of the new 2020 & 2021 Fellows in December in Washington DC, let’s remember to keep those working hard to finalize their

YAF UPDATE From the COF Executive Committee

The YAF makes an important pitch for COF Mentors and adjusts to AIA's New Regional Structure by Ron Blitch, FAIA

The YAF made a presentation of their mission and

goals for mentorship as part of the COF Annual Business Meeting and had 20 Fellows indicate interest in assisting with mentorship during the session, exceeding all expectations. The YAF will prepare a one-page “elevator pitch” for Fellows to understand the commitment and opportunity of mentorship with the YAF.

It’s hoped that future hybrid and in-person COF Annual Business Meetings will include a segment for the YAF to recruit Fellows to get involved with their members and mentor them in their careers and their paths to Fellowship. The YAF is also quickly moving to adjust to the new regional structure of AIA. Transition meetings are underway in coordination with the NAC to make this new organizational structure seamless and effective. YAF is considering the adoption of the same regional structure as AIA. This transition is complicated and will involve the updating of communications materials as well as changes in membership structure. 10

As part of the YAF’s advocacy efforts, exploration of the “So you want to” series focusing on Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) is underway for a program in November. More to come on this after approval of this outreach. YAF is also reaching out to NOMA for possible collaborative events. “Summit 30” (the 30th anniversary of the YAF) will happen in 2022 and the YAF is hoping that the COF can be an integral part and supporter of the programming. A goal to involve more Fellows with YAF members is important to both the YAF and the COF, such collaboration needs to be strengthened. Mentorship is one of the main pillars of the Mission of the COF and an area in where we must make great progress. The YAF is doing significant work for AIA and our profession and offers a great opportunity for the College to make a difference. Please consider a Mentorship with a YAF member and advance our COF mission.

A task force has been established by the ExCom of the COF to study whether or not to align the organization structure of the COF regional representatives with the new AIA approach to regions.

An initial meeting was convened in August at the COF ExCom meeting with a follow-up meeting scheduled. We expect to solicit feedback from the current RR’s to help inform the discussions. Stay tuned!

While AIA has moved to one representative per State approach, that may not be the ideal structure for the College, as some States have very few Fellows, and other States are currently part of multiple State regions, which limits their representation.

An updated personal letter has been sent to all New Fellows with details on attending with their guests. We look forward to congratulating the Classes of 2020 and 2021!

New COF Funds Donation Website The College of Fellows is pleased to announce that a new website has been launched to accept donations to the College to advance its mission. Previously, the process of donating to the COF was cumbersome and confusing, and was part of the AIA "Store" platform. With the guidance of AIA Staff, the new site is user-friendly and allows a donation with just a few simple clicks. Donors will also be able to make "recurring" donations monthly if desired, easily designate their donation to a cause or individual, and get immediate recognition from the Chancellor of the COF that their donation has been received and is appreciated. Awarded to a research proposal that has the long-range potential to resolve one or more 21st century architectural and built environment challenges, the Latrobe Prize provides the recipient with $100,000 to conduct research on a critical issue and to develop a solution that enhances the current practice of architecture, construction practices and processes.

The AIA College of Fellows' mission is to support the Institute and advance the profession of architecture. Toward that end, the College seeks to encourage research that broadens the perspective and scope of architecture to include cross-disciplinary fields and expertise through its biennial competition: the Latrobe Prize. Research proposals for the Latrobe Prize may include, but are not limited to, building materials and delivery systems, digital design, computer simulation and modeling, energy, eco-design, or integrated design- construction practices and processes.

ANNOUNCEMENTS Regional Representatives Call for LETTERS OF INTEREST and NOMINATIONS The AIA College of Fellows, along with the Chair of the Council of Regional Representatives, is seeking nominations, as well as self-nominations, of those who may have an interest in serving the College in the capacity of a Regional Representative. The Council is currently comprised of 38 designated Representatives, each aligned with his/her respective AIA Region* and normally serving in this capacity for a threeyear term. In support of the primary missions of the College of Fellows, Regional Representatives provide the principal communication link with the COF Executive Committee, as well as offering support and direction for the various activities of AIA Fellows in each designated Region. Quarterly Meetings of the Council of Regional Representatives are conducted via Zoom conferencing, with the exception of its Annual Meeting. [In 2022 the Annual Meeting will be held, in person, at the AIA Conference, Thursday, June 23 in Chicago. 2021 AIA COF ExCom Meeting Tribute to Peter Kuttner, FAIA by John Castellana, FAIA

s mentioned in my Chancellors Message, our ExCom was able to meet twice in-person this summer coupled with our monthly Zoom sessions. Meeting in person certainly allowed us the opportunity to collaborate together and have more detailed and focused discussions about our College operations and future activities. It certainly felt good to finally have a sense of normalcy after many months of solely meeting virtually. Being that I am in Michigan, we decided to have both our meetings here to simplify logistics with the excellent help of my wife, Barbara, and the AIA Michigan staff (Cathy Mosley, Executive Director and Evelyn Dougherty, Operations and Events Director). Our most recent meeting was held in conjunction with AIA Michigan’s 78th Annual Mid-Summer Conference on Mackinac Island. Our ExCom conducted internal meetings, attended the AIA Michigan business/workshop sessions and had the

opportunity to meet and network with many Fellows and over 200 member architects during our stay at the Grand Hotel. We also were able to finally give a tribute to our 58th Chancellor, Peter Kuttner, FAIA and his wife Elaine. Along with the ExCom, we invited several other guests to join in this celebration – Ed and Ruby Vance, and Jeanne Jackson and RK Stewart. In the 78 years that AIA Michigan has conducted this MidSummer Conference, there have never been so many national AIA leaders present. On the cover of this Newsletter we feature three Former Presidents (RK Stewart, FAIA – 2007; Kate Schwennsen, FAIA - 2006; Gene Hopkins, FAIA – 2004) and one current Chancellor and two Former Chancellors (John Castellana, FAIA – 2021; Peter Kuttner, FAIA – 2020; Ed Vance, FAIA). Having these national leaders in attendance to be an integral part of the conference was so rewarding for all attendees, who were able to meet and have great discussions about our wonderful profession.

Who are your Regional Representatives? Many of you may not realize the critical role played by the Regional Representatives who form our Council in advancing our mission, and advocating for the needs and interests of our members, as well as the emerging professionals we mentor. The ongoing efforts of the 38 Regional Representatives provide the leadership, communication and passion that animates the AIA College of Fellows. These Regional Reps serve three-year terms, acting as a communication conduit between the COF ExCom and their Region, and providing opportunities and information to you, their constituents. Their work allows the COF to gather information on best practices and successful programs in the Regions, which can be shared with others. They provide continuous contact with AIA, YAF, and NAC Regional leadership groups, assist the COF in publicizing our leadership around the world, and support our fundraising. They gather annually during the national AIA Conference (whether in person, or, as of late, virtually), and communicate with each other regularly on Zoom. The following pages will introduce you to Jeanne Jackson, FAIA, our current Chair of the Regional Representatives’ Council and the rest of the 30

Representatives. Many of you, particularly from multi-state Regions, may not know your Rep personally. Regardless, find your Region and your Rep, and feel free to get in touch with them.
