As of this publication date, the new mitigations impact culinary programs and the library’s cafe/vending. This does not impact main library entrance procedures. Participants are required to provide proof of full vaccination before entering the Makerplace Kitchen at 112 N. Belmont Ave. Seating and tables in the café/vending areas on the first and second floors of the library are not available for use. Vending machines are available for carryout food service only. On February 19, 1942, Executive Order 9066 authorized the incarceration of almost 120,000 Japanese Americans. Join storyteller Anne Shimojima as she shares the inspiring story of her family’s journey from Japan and their time in internment camps where innocent people were locked up behind barbed wire. Shimojima illustrates her talk with photos from her family and the National Archives, showing a family whose only crime was looking like the enemy. Anne Shimojima was a New Voice Teller at the National Storytelling Festival in 2017.

An Evening with Author Madeline Miller Thursday, March 3, 7-8 p.m. / Zoom Join us for an evening with Madeline Miller, one of the leaders in Greek retellings and New York Times bestselling author, to discuss her works, The Song of Achilles and Circe. Miller’s debut novel, The Song of Achilles, was awarded the 2012 Orange Prize for Fiction. Her second novel, Circe, was an instant #1 New York Times bestseller. Before she was a novelist, Miller earned her BA and MA in Classics from Brown University, and she taught and tutored Latin, Greek and Shakespeare to high school students for more than 15 years. Her novels have been translated into over 25 languages, and her essays have appeared in The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, Lapham’s Quarterly and on npr.org. The Makerplace provides visitors ages 12 and up a unique opportunity for making and creating using the latest technology and equipment, along with flexible workspaces and a commercial-grade kitchen. Visit anytime to explore the space, try something new or bring a project from home and use the open workspaces. Holden currently teaches steel fabrication and metal forming at The Chicago Industrial Arts and Design Center.
