A HOLIDAY AT LAST

He is not the only one on holiday or ‘Annual Leave’ as it is known nowadays. As far as I am concerned Annual Leave is something I was granted in the forces but on civvy street, I call it holiday. I know I am old fashioned; at my age you’re allowed to be! Anyway I have spent over two weeks at Costa del Town O’Rule. It is a heavenly spot with views over the Rule Valley, the weather has been mixed and I have not been able to get out and about as I would have wished. Silly old fool that he is got me here a week early. I am worried about him - he can’t tell one Tuesday from another. I was invited to pull the laying shed here on September 1st, they were very surprised to see us on August 25th. When I arrived, the hens were still in the house. Luckily my gain as the Browns treat me as a member of the family. I plan to return home next Monday, just after he comes back from Pisa. I pulled the rearing shed for the last time on August 9th. It is now in pieces on a farm in Wales. The last pull of the rearing shed

September 6th 2026 Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing. Spring has arrived with the usual mix of warm dry winds followed by cold rain storms resulting in pretty good conditions for the stock and crops. The boys have been shearing the 4000 odd lambs they took through the winter. Although we have to shear them before they go to slaughter, shearing this year has had some excitement to it. It is the first year for well over a decade that there will be a small profit from selling the wool versus the cost of shearing. Wool has climbed to the giddy heights of around $4/kg greasy which should yield a margin of about $4/lamb over costs. In the 70’s I did a bit of shearing in Scotland. They were mainly blackface sheep that All go in the woolshed I don’t remember with huge fondness. I had to take to wearing leather aprons reversed to protect the back of my legs from their horns. The little sods loved to fight and would work their heads up and down as one finished the long blows. Hefted blackface would return to their hills with smug satisfaction knowing they’d halved my tally for the day. I had a godfather who lived in England and worked for Courtaulds (artificial yarn makers). I went to see him to recover from my shearing stint and he explained to me why the wool industry had no future. I won’t go into the reasons why but he was of course right although I wasn’t sure I believed him at the time. Despite this on returning to NZ I moved our sheep operation away from an emphasis on wool to one of meat production making wool a byproduct. This was a good move. Lamb shearing Over the decades all the predictions my godfather made about better and more competitive artificial yarns became reality, relegating wool to becoming a liability rather than an asset. During the downturn in the 80’s I went shearing 4 or 5 days a week to keep the bank at bay and have always enjoyed working in woolsheds. This year’s shearing I found strangely moving I think because there was a buzz in the woolshed reflecting a return to the “good old days” when wool was valued. It has a wee way to go… but even my godfather wouldn’t begrudge a small shift back to natural fibres.

Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley and oats are grown, 500 Angus cattle are finished annually, 8000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose and 8,000 organic point of lay pullets are reared each year. We wrapped up harvest on August 15th which is just shy of our earliest ever finish. As I mentioned last month yields have been variable across the board with winter wheat and organic winter oats being the standout crops. I will publish more detailed results once all crops have been sold. Ever since harvest we have been flat out trying to get the new hen shed ready for the birds arriving next Friday. The list of jobs seems to be never ending but hopefully we are nearly there. It is the closest I will ever get to being in an episode of ‘DIY SOS’ or ‘Challenge Annika’ with so many trades on site working tirelessly to get everything finished on time. The new entrance off the A68 has been an 18-month long battle with the authorities and is finally being installed this week. That just leaves us with fencing, concreting, landscaping, 15th August 2026 harvest complete washing, cleaning, disinfecting… to do. I also really need to know how the banks of computers work as currently all I can do is switch the lights on! Its great having a fully automated high spec system if it works and more importantly, I know how to work it. The equipment manufactures assure me that I will get a full run through of the system next week - they have been promising me this for the last month. Nothing like leaving it until the last minute to keep us on our toes! We are starting to bring cattle in as they get on top of the grass and its quality declines. The first batch averaged 1kg/day over a 153-day period at grass. I was hoping for a little better especially as they had spent the last couple of months on our new silage leys. Thoughts have already turned to harvest 2027. Oilseed rape was drilled on 10th August and has so far manged to grow away from the dreaded flea beetle which is causing havoc in our area this year. I have heard reports of fields being completely wiped out and having to be redrilled. Typically, all the volunteer rape from the 2026 harvest seems to be completely untouched! A prolonged spell of dry weather over harvest is great as it makes the whole process quick and easy. The only downside of finishing so earlier is that everyone gets caught up and wants to get on with cereal drilling. I am currently trying to hold our contractor off until the end of the week at the earliest. The current forecast for the next 10 days looks very settled with little to no rain. I am very aware of the issues we had last year with drilling early and BYDV which I don’t want to repeat. I completely understand the contractor’s position. They have a lot of work ahead of them, conditions are perfect and the super El Nino is apparently on its way with a serious amount of rain! New entrance finally going in

Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his mother Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland organically. We enjoy a project, and we love a building. We are passionate about the benefits of buildings to us, the team, the stock and their uses. They are never big enough no matter how many extra bays we add or how many feet we add to the width. Over the last three decades we have, on average, put a building up every other year, and every other year I say to myself ‘That’s enough, no more needed now’. Invariably we find a job for another one. 2025 and 2026 have been particularly fun with covered muck stores, silage pits and extra storage on the farm. The race is now on to complete our capital works that were in our Higher Tier agreement before the end of the year. There’s hedging to be planted, and established hedges to be laid. Fences to erect, walling to complete, but also larger capital projects too. Concrete seems to be August and September’s job. Concreting at Donkin Rigg is a challenging job due to the access, tying in with existing drains as well as the topography and layout of the site, but funding the concrete floor in the new muckstore, which wasn’t assisted with any grant funding, adds to the cashflow juggle. Sadly, we won’t complete everything, as time and cashflow are tight. The challenge is getting paid out on the last claim before being able to put in the next claim which invariably holds things up. Sadly, Bluetongue continues to march its way across the country and the supply of vaccine continues to creep along too slow for demand. We have managed to vaccinate our ewe lambs, gimmers, tups and bulls. The ewes were done last year and the question is whether that will give them enough antibodies to fight any infected midge bites that come their way, but we will need to do them again this winter. The cows will also need vaccinating this winter. It’s another cost and another job. The spring sown reseeds, under the wholecrop have worked for once and the multi species SFI swards look really well. Certainly, for us, an increased seed rate above the recommended rate is a winner. We are preparing for hens to go out at the end of this week, and for the first time we are taking some of the litter out prior to the catching teams arrival. The baby Manitou is perfect for the job as its quiet and manoeuvrable. It’s a ‘late at night’ job, once the birds have gone to bed, which makes leaping out of bed ready for the day a bit of a challenge, but will hopefully make catching and muck out significantly easier. We are all hoping and praying that Andy Burnham and the Labour government has a reset on rural relations. It has not gone at all well so far with so many policies alienating farmers and rural communities. For example, will the government be prepared to back British producers and stop the flood of imports, especially now the EU has banned Brazilian beef and chicken. Will it be heading here? What is stopping it? 44

September 7th 2026 Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise. Harvest 2026, my 21st since returning to the farm, has finally been completed. We should have been wrapped up in August but a late field of wheat after tatties pushed us into the first few days of September. In retrospect this late field should have had a pre-harvest application of glyphosate, but I missed my opportunity. To be honest it probably should have been sprayed off in February but I can explain that later (yes mistakes still happen after 21 years). Oilseed rape will have yielded just under 4.1t/ha. Always happy to yield over 4t/ha but the crop looked better than that. I really struggle to get much over 4t/ha no matter what I do. Is this the yield plateau of the farm for OSR or is there something I am doing (or not doing) keeping us from the giddy heights of 4.5t/ha plus? I have already spoken to my agronomist, and we are going to have a deep dive on OSR this winter to find out what can be done. For a crop that is in the ground for 12 months I would love to squeeze more out of it. United Oilseeds, once again, did a fantastic job of clearing the store of rape including the 320kg leftover. I really rate United Oilseeds and it is great to have a successful cooperative in this sector. Movement of spring barley has not been so swift. In fact, the polar opposite. Thankfully all the barley has been conditioned through the dryer allowing it to sit on farm without fear Supper being delivered to the combine. Always welcome! of spoilage. Very little of our crop this year will ultimately go for malting as contracts were rare and feed values have rallied meaning I am happy to see barley head for the feed mills as opposed to the maltings. Maybe my 21st harvest will be my last growing malting barley? Hopefully a fleet of lorries will clear our feet over the next few weeks. Wheat has been a mixed bag. First wheats after OSR and, especially, peas have been fantastic. Second wheats have been a little disappointing despite looking well all season, although in a dry, stressy season it will always be second wheats which struggle the most. Wheat after tatties have been underwhelming but this has been traced back to a dodgy batch of seed. The suppliers of the certified seed have admitted their fault but a figure to resolve the situation has yet to be agreed. I will certainly be keeping a closer eye on the seed coming onto farm in the future. Without a weighbridge, or a correctly calibrated yield monitor the report of yields will have to wait until it all leaves the farm. Wheat seems to be good kg/hl and barley ran well too. I am the free-range life and an optimistic of the final result. We are very fortunate compared to our fellow farmers in the south. Turkeys enjoying abundance of grass This was my first year using the Mzuri strip drill for all crops. I am hugely encouraged by the results. Lessons were learnt in regards to dealing with chopped straw and grassweeds, both in relation to spring drilling but spring barley has proved remarkably able to yield under the new system. Winter crops of wheat, rye and OSR responded well and I certainly have no intention of ploughing anything at this stage in the season. Our new straw rake is being deployed this autumn with all stubbles being covered at least once. The OSR stubbles have been raked twice which has made a great job of dealing with volunteer rape plants and residues. The rake is 7.5m wide and can travel up to 20km/hr (although we have been mostly operating at a more conservative 12km/hr.) so can cover a large acreage in a day. Spreading straw and creating a microtilth has many advantages although I am sure my neighbours looking from afar will accuse me of recreational tillage as the results are not easy to see as only a small amount of soil is moved. The straw rake ready for action The new system has seen far less diesel used over the season, which is most welcome. Once I have some time in the office over winter I can calculate how much less. But with crops to sow the office work can wait… 46

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 1000ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd. This has turned out to be the longest harvest ever. Having parked the combine up on 31st July, there were just the beans left. They looked like one more “heatwave” and they would be ready. So in eager anticipation I drove the 30 miles to where I have 450 acres of the wretched crop only to find they were greener than before and had started to grow again. A green stalk would contain harvest ready main pods, immature green pods at the top and then be flowering again at the base of the plant. I really don’t like using roundup pre-harvest but could see little other option. The upshot of this is I still have 120 acres of beans waiting now to dry out. They will be cut as this dry spell draws to a close whether they are dry or not as they are delaying wheat preparation and the yield is awful, in fact it is catastrophic. Since we have had some rain, I decided to bet on black and some oilseed rape has been planted. I was pleased to have worked the soil at home as the moisture certainly got to Grass seed is a go depth quicker. Land on contract farms was drilled with a subsoiler and it is noticeably drier at 4-6” deep. The plants all look well, but now are being attacked by CSFB. OSR has this irritating habit of emerging quickly, and then seemingly standing still for 10-14 days, I assume whilst the plant develops its root structure. This just makes it a sitting duck for all sorts of nasties. Hopefully it will grow away from it. The outwintering land was drilled a few days before the OSR in lovely conditions aided by 12mm of rain just as Colby was finishing the field. It looks great. The aim is to grow a balanced diet so as not to need many, if any, bales of silage. Forage rye was mixed with Interval Rape and planted at 35kg/ha and 3kg/ha respectively. Fortunately a hopeless seed salesman, who had promised all seed was in stock, was not good for his word so the forage rye was sown at half the desired rate. And thank god it was as 70kg/ha would have been far too thick. Not only that but we have also got the grass in for summer grazing at the third attempt… Terrible beans The soil worked beautifully for this heavy land and I then got a contractor in with a boom spreader as I only have tine drills which tend to get the seed too deep. This turned into a bit of an ordeal as the metering system was somewhat small so the fields needed doing twice, and the hopper could only take 1-2 bags otherwise it bridged. After 10 hours and 78 bags of seed it was complete and I had it double rolled in by 11pm with 12mm falling the next morning. Perhaps my luck is turning... And with that the phone rings with a broken bearing on a cultivator so normality is resumed. Back to living the dream!

Where Will the Next Growth Come From? The opportunities emerging for UK agriculture and rural business For generations, growth in agriculture has been relatively easy to define: more acres, more livestock, bigger machinery and greater output. But is that still what growth needs to look like? For many farming and rural businesses, the next decade could be less about getting bigger and more about getting more value from what they already have. That doesn’t mean the traditional farming model is disappearing. Food production will remain at the heart of agriculture, and the UK’s ability to produce its own food is increasingly recognised as an economic and strategic asset. The recent Farming Profitability Review, however, makes it clear that productivity, market access, diversification and new sources of income will all have a role in creating more resilient businesses. So where might that growth come from? Technology is an obvious starting point. Precision farming, automation, robotics, sensors and better use of farm data could allow businesses to produce more efficiently, particularly as labour, machinery and input costs continue to rise. The question is no longer whether technology has a place on farms, but which technologies can genuinely improve the bottom line. Adding value is another opportunity. Selling a commodity is very different from selling a product. Farm shops, direct sales, processing, local brands and specialist markets can allow producers to capture more of the value created further along the supply chain. Recent examples of farmers experimenting with automated farm vending show how relatively simple ideas can create additional income without requiring a traditional retail operation. Diversification will continue to matter, too. Tourism, accommodation, contracting, storage, workshops, renewable energy and rural services can all provide additional income streams. For some businesses, the most successful diversification may have surprisingly little to do with farming itself. Then there is natural capital. Biodiversity, water, carbon and woodland are increasingly being viewed not simply as environmental considerations but as potential economic assets. There are still plenty of questions around how these markets develop and how reliable the returns will be, but it is an area that landowners are unlikely to be able to ignore. Perhaps the biggest opportunity, however, will be resilience. The extraordinary weather of 2026 has demonstrated that climate resilience isn’t a distant environmental issue. Drought, heat and water availability can directly affect yields, livestock and profitability. Investment in soils, water storage, grazing systems, crop choice and infrastructure could therefore become an investment in the future profitability of the business. None of this means every farm needs a farm shop, a holiday let or a fleet of robots. The important point is that growth can take many forms. It might mean producing more from the same acreage. It might mean reducing costs. It might mean processing a product, providing a service, developing a new enterprise or finding a better market. The farms and rural businesses that thrive may not necessarily be the biggest. They could simply be the ones that are best at spotting where the value is going next. I am writing this from a lovely Tuscan farmhouse in western Italy. Situated on a 1000 ha estate it has the most wonderful views. Estates of this size are very unusual as Napoleonic law sees the break up of land ownership into smaller areas Guy Lee through generations. Agri tourism is a very important part of the rural economy embedded into law in 1985, every municipality has at least one working farm hosting guests. Amazingly over 35% of the farms are organic, growing olives, vines and Mediterranean fruits. This estate has a large solar array as well as a gas to grid AD plant. Driving around, arable crops have mostly been harvested and we have seen ancient combines cutting sunflowers. None of the land looks excessively productive apart from grapes hanging on the vine destined for the famous wines such as Chianti that are produced here. Our Angus correspondent, Tom Pate, very kindly gave me a copy of his father’s book ‘The Dundee Matadors’. It is the most fascinating story of a business that was capitalised from the profits of jute processing in Dundee. The money was invested in beef ranching in the United States. Jute took over from flax as a cheaper material for sail cloth, sacking etc. Grown in Bengal it was shipped to Dundee for processing, initially it failed as it was too brittle to machine mill until the discovery was made that mixed with whale oil it became flexible and could be used for many purposes. The attraction to these jute barons of investing in beef ranching was the supposed returns of over 30%. Better than any income that could be earned in the UK and the burgeoning American railroads. The attractive return in the pages I have read have not materialised but as we all know profits from beef farming are too often based on hope. With judicious management from Dundee the company survived many challenges from drought to severe winter storms as well as depressed prices with the roller coaster of the American economy. It is a great book and I would thoroughly recommend it.
