It’s the one job I look forward to and fear the most - a contradiction if ever there was one. Last week I went over to Easter Softlaw where there are two of the largest mobiles I know. I have pulled these sheds every year for the past 14 years, save one time when I was ‘off games’ with a broken gearbox. I pull one house one afternoon and go back the next morning to move the other as my winch overheats and smokes if I overwork it too much on one day. Being such a dead weight I use both snatch blocks to ease the effort. To the unitiated these are pulleys which half the load for each one in use. This obviously reduces the amount of distance I can move the shed in each pull. This means I have to drive forward four times to position the hen house in its new position. The first day went smoothly although I had to be helped myself as I could not get any traction on the muddy terrain. It rained hard that night and moving around on the second day was a real challenge. On the second move forward the cable jumped off one of the pulleys and jammed in the spindle. There was no obvious way to undo the tangle I found myself in - that was until Helen arrived on the scene. With the pulley anchored to my back end she said we should use his chain round the cable, attach it to the loader and pull. It worked a treat, with the cable free we were back in business and completed the rest of the manoeuvres without a hitch. Us women know how to untangle things. Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his mother Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland - organically. Where to start, everything is now a very different place to this time last month when we wrote this article. Last month we were writing about the new hens, benchmarking and scanning. This month it’s war, the impact on input prices, oil, diesel, fertiliser and everything that follows on from those increases. Availability of fertiliser and the increase in prices will inevitably have short, mid and longer term impacts that affect farming directly, but also retailers and consumers. Increased fuel prices are always bad news for everybody and it’s hard to find anything positive to talk about with this war in the Middle East. The thing about farming is our need to concentrate on the day to day, so whilst many things around us change, the seasonal day to day routines must continue. Feeding, bedding, collecting eggs, everything continues. Cows are all vaccinated with an anti scour vaccine ready for calving. Some of the heifers are starting to bag up already. Currently we’re mucking out and getting prepared for the start of calving. The new muck store has proven its value instantly. The ability to muck sheds out directly into store is fantastic, saving time and removing the need to travel over wet ground to get to the muck heaps. Planning has gone in again for the muck store at Rothley East Shield. We are trying to work with the council to get this building over the line this time, ensuring that they are happy with every element. The planning fee is eyewatering, so we need to get it approved this year, as we’re not prepared to pay that again. Our Capital works have to be completed this year for the stewardship claim, so we need it up this summer. We are using British steel, British concrete and local teams to erect this building, fully supporting the national and local economy on this build. In order to better manage and plan for spring grazing plans are afoot to put up another sheep shed. This will enable us to rest more ground over the winter months. It also sounds very simple and logical, however I am already dreading the planning process. The new hens are doing well, with pullet eggs coming thick and fast now. They’re putting weight on nicely and once they reach a target weight, we put an extra hour of light on each week until they get to 15 hours. Currently they are on 13 hours of light, normally adding the hour on at the end of the day, but the next two hours might need to go on in the morning, as the clocks will be changing shortly and also it’s a tool to help manage system eggs. The fencers are back again preparing for more hedge plants to go in and our hedge layer is continuing to make good progress laying the older KENNY HALL & SON hedges. On Our Farm
March 11th 2026 Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley and oats are grown, 500 Angus cattle are finished annually, 8000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose and 8,000 organic point of lay pullets are reared each year. It has been a very interesting and unpredictable last few weeks which could have ramifications for years to come. The war with Iran has made what was looking like a tough year in farming even tougher. The price of oil is only going in one direction and gas prices are rising even quicker. Fortunately, I secured all my fertiliser pre-Christmas however I have heard that there are big delays on anything ordered recently. Unsurprisingly grain markets have remained very sluggish not helped by the strong pound. The only hope is that the UK ethanol industry could restart if fuel prices continue to climb. Winter crops are looking very promising and have all had their first dose of Nitrogen and Sulphur. I did question myself when driving the fertiliser spreader whether I would make Looking for water, I wish it was oil! more money selling the fertiliser than I would growing the crop! The sprayer will be out as soon as the weather settles down to get T0’s on winter barleys and a fungicide/PGR on the oilseed rape. The next month is looking particularly busy with hen/pullet sheds to move/wash, spring drilling, fertiliser spreading, spraying and cattle to turnout. I just hope the weather improves and we have a couple of dry weeks to get on top of things. 32,000 pullets are booked to arrive on 3rd August for our new free range shed. Currently all we have is a very expensive pad. They are due to start building in late April and assure me that it will be ready by August. I really hope that they are right. Due to recent bird flu outbreaks and pullet rearers switching to broiler production there is a UK shortage of First dose of nitrogen going on pullets. If we don’t take ours in August the next available are late 2027. No pressure then! The fat cattle price continues to fall due to lack of demand and cheap imports. Despite this the store price remains very strong which has made the margins on finishing cattle tight to non-existent. We are continually working out our cost of production, and I struggle to see how people can make a margin with the current store price. Maybe they are banking on the fat price going back up but that is a very risky game to play. Despite all the doom and gloom at this present time, there has been something over the last few weekends that has really lifted my spirits. The Scottish rugby team have gone from wooden spoon specialists to the ‘Harlem Globetrotters’ of northern hemisphere rugby! The form book has been completely thrown out the window since Rome, with victories over England, Wales and France. Let’s hope they can finish the job off in Dublin, despite all their injuries and the English can do us a favour in Paris.

Guy Lee We have a number of water meters on the farm that are read infrequently if at all by Scottish Water. Some have been billed with estimated readings for years so earlier this week I thought it a good idea to work out which property each meter supplied. Two of the manhole covers are on a blind rise on the A68, with the meter at least two feet below ground level and one of them under water which made a clear reading very difficult. So there I was lying prostrate beside a busy trunk road trying to take a photo of the meter readings. The next task was to turn on various taps and see which meter was turning. I had walked 100 yards down the road to our farm steading, turned a tap on and was walking back when two police cars appeared, blue lights on and stopped outside the gate. “Was I the possible deceased person who had been lying flat out beside the road?”, the police lady asked. I told her that I presumed it must have been me but I had made a miraculous recovery! It was very impressive just how quickly they turned up when most of the time they are conspicuous by their absence. Nobody can enjoy seeing the wholesale destruction of so much infrastructure in the Middle East. The hope is it is done for a worthwhile long term cause which will make the world a Meter under water - very hard to read safer place. In the short term it is hard to see that, with no apparent strategy or an idea of the desired end result. In 1971 I drove overland from the UK to Australia, via two sea crossings from Chennai to Penang, and Singapore to Perth. Our overland route took us through Iran and Afghanistan. The culprits were identified as voles, so this week every dead plant has been replaced and all are now protected with a vole guard. March 9th 2026 Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing. The sun came out for a day or two and the boys seem to have caught up with the harvest. All the grain, grasseed and white clover has been harvested and the straw baled. That leaves radish and red clover to be done this month sometime. The white clover was the worst affected crop by all the rain however the grain crops were ok but no records broken. We haven’t turned an irrigator on at the dairy farm this year, which must be a record and saves several thousand dollars a month which is welcome. The grass is growing and the The view from our bed cows are milking well. We’ve managed to secure the lease (and hopefully the eventual purchase) of a small 15ha block across the road from the dairy. This will allow us to take the cow numbers to about 400 (from 350) and milk production to about 200,000kgs milk solids (from 170,000) with minimal increase in costs. Milk price expectations are around $9.50/kg for this season and I’ve just sold some milk forward for the 26/27 season at the same money which secures our profit. We did manage to get away for a weekend staying up country with Janie and the Jockey at Glenlyon station. Bicycling with the Jockey and some friends They are having a great year, averaging $170/hd for their 6000 store lambs and expecting record money for their 900 beef calves. The flip side is the buoyant store lamb market is making it difficult and expensive for us cropping farmers to buy lambs to fatten although the fat price still leaves a bit of a margin. Trump’s latest brain spasm creates some potential market worries with as yet uncertain consequences, so we are a little nervous. I noticed no sympathy from the Jockey, though he did show me a couple of streams where I landed a trout or two as consolation. Dobson river

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 1000ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd.
The last four weeks have summed up farming perfectly. Last month I said I was only selling enough crop to maintain cashflow while waiting for a “better day.” Late on Friday, 27 February, I took stock of our fertiliser and diesel ahead of the spring campaign. Since it was after 4 p.m., I decided to let the allied trades head off for their traditionally hedonistic weekend frivolities and place my orders on Monday. What a mistake.
Fortunately, I only needed an extra six percent of my nitrogen order, so the impact wasn’t disastrous, but the fuel price has been rising daily in direct correlation with each petroleum plant being bombed into the night sky.
This would be less damaging if wheat prices had followed suit, but no—wheat remains in the doldrums. All of this, of course, feels Spring is here utterly insignificant compared with those whose livelihoods are being destroyed and the devastating loss of life. I can see the reasoning behind the USA and Israel’s actions, but the whole thing feels a little ad hoc, with no firm plan for stabilisation. That uncertainty may linger for some time. Perhaps Donald Trump should spend a Saturday afternoon watching rugby. He would see the best resourced union, with the largest playing base and the highest paid players, performing with no discernible plan to win—and losing week after week. History is full of David and Goliath moments where David punches far above his weight, turning small skirmishes into long, drawn out affairs with no obvious winner (unless you’re the Scottish Rugby Team!). Meanwhile, the crops are growing fast. The oilseed rape has practically taken off and now stands waist high, which makes me nervous about late season frosts. All crops have received their first dose of variable rate nitrogen, which inevitably brings IT glitches—some caused by a new software operator at the supplier’s nerve centre, and some by an on farm operator who couldn’t quite remember last year’s button sequence!
I have finally made a decision about the combine for this year. To misquote Gandhi: “Live as if you were to die tomorrow; farm as if you were to farm forever.” That sentiment helped convince me to keep moving forward. I looked at various colours and ultimately went well over budget, aiming for the best value machine: a 2024 Claas 8700. With fewer new machines being sold, the second hand market is limited, so I moved up a model from our current machine.

When we first moved to Lincolnshire, we couldn’t afford a combine at all, so we hired one for four years. Then we bought an eight year old machine, then a six year old, then a four year old, and now a two year old. So we are moving forward—but at an eye watering cost. With crops looking set to produce plenty of straw this season, I’ll be glad of the extra power, though perhaps less keen to look at the fuel gauge too often.

Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise.
In last month’s Agrimart, it was noted that Guy admitted to using an AI chatbot to produce his 500word article about the state of agriculture. Horrified at the prospect of Agrimart writers being replaced by artificial intelligence I would like to assure regular readers that there is nothing artificial nor intelligent about my articles and I will fight to continue my reporting of real-life stupidity on my farm. We must not let the robots win!
Talking of real-life disasters in last month’s edition I reported on the escape of 100 deer calves from their winter housing. I am pleased to report that all but six have safely returned and are now securely in the appropriate place. Having initially disappeared they returned in groups of between ten and fifty at a time. The wet and cold conditions experienced throughout February helped, I think, convince the deer that life on the outside was considerably worse than the luxury that awaited them on their return. Six remain on a neighbour’s farm which is a problem as forestry fencing and a main road means they are in a bit of a bottleneck, and their return journey will need a bit of navigation and good fortune. Field work has got off to a slow start with a round of fertiliser applied to all winter crops. Travelling was surprisingly good with only one tramline of wheat being tactfully avoided. I think the direct strip till has allowed travel about 7 – 10 days earlier than would’ve been possible on ploughed ground. Winter crops are looking surprisingly well considering the wet start to 2026. There looks like good potential in most fields in the area. Spring drilling doesn’t look imminent. On the new strip till system, I will have to hold my nerve and wait for warmer soil temperatures before venturing out to sow spring barley. With malting contracts virtually non existent the barley will probably end up in the feed pile. Hopefully the grain trade is working hard to secure some feed barley export opportunities.
Whilst we were improving the environment at one end of the field (see other photograph) some disgusting individual decided to fly tip this truck load of rubbish at the other. What is wrong with some people?!

At time of writing wheat prices are rallying (although not as fast as energy and fertiliser) due to the ongoing conflict in Iran. Call me soft but I’d rather live in a stable, peaceful world and get a few quid less for commodities than risk the start of WW3. Hopefully a busier time, ahead on farm will allow me time away from global news and allow me the indulgence of only having to worry about my little corner of this crazy world.

Middle East Conflict Implications for UK Farmers The ongoing conflicts in the Middle East have implications that reach far beyond the region itself, including potential consequences for UK agriculture. While the United Kingdom is geographically distant from the conflict zones, globalised supply chains, energy markets, and fertiliser trade mean that instability in the Middle East can significantly affect British farmers. One of the most immediate impacts is through energy prices. Many Middle Eastern countries are major producers of oil and natural gas. When conflicts escalate, global markets often react with price volatility due to fears of supply disruptions. Higher fuel prices directly affect UK agriculture because farming operations rely heavily on diesel for machinery such as tractors, harvesters, and irrigation systems. Increased fuel costs raise the overall cost of production, which can reduce farm profitability and push food prices higher for consumers. Fertiliser costs are another key concern. Fertiliser production depends heavily on natural gas, and energy market instability often translates into higher fertiliser prices.
