Tasman. I joined in February and feel privileged to be stepping into this role and becoming part of such a respected and caring organisation. Supporting people and communities has always been at the heart of my work and my personal values. Throughout my career in public health and community development, I have seen how connection, support, and strong relationships can make a real difference in people’s lives. The opportunity to work alongside older people, their families, and the community is deeply meaningful to me, and I feel honoured to contribute to work.

My husband Rob and I are really looking forward to exploring this beautiful region and becoming part of the Nelson Tasman community. I have also brought a new member to the Age Concern team, Fonzie, our 12-year-old miniature schnauzer, who is firmly in his golden years and reminds me daily to slow down and enjoy the small moments. I bring experience in public health, community development, and strategic leadership, focusing on strengthening services, supporting teams, and helping organisations grow in ways that remain true to their purpose. I am looking forward to meeting our members, volunteers, partners, and the wider community, and learning from the people who make ACNT such a valued part of the region.

Age Concern Nelson Tasman has recently welcomed Angela Zame into a new role as Housing Support Advisor, funded by Nelson City Council.
This is an early-stage role focused on listening to community members and organisations involved in housing across the Nelson city area. The aim of this phase is to gain a clearer understanding of what services already exist, how they operate, and how ACNT can contribute alongside existing support for people aged 65 and over.

Angela brings experience in health and community support and will spend the coming months meeting with local groups, service providers, and older people to listen to their experiences and perspectives. This work will help create a clearer picture of the local housing landscape and how different services are interconnected.

Housing can be complex, especially when navigating rental options, applications, or online systems to apply for housing. During this initial phase, ACNT aims to gain a clearer understanding of how people currently access information and support within existing services. We will share updates as this work progresses.

Visitor Volunteer Kate Ericksen shares her account of her friendship with Dr Bob Anderson of Motueka.
Towards the end of 2024, after witnessing the challenges of ageing while caring for my mother in Christchurch, I reached out to Age Concern Nelson Tasman to enquire about volunteering. I was matched with Dr Bob just as he was celebrating his 98th birthday at the start of 2025. Although Age Concern typically matches volunteers of the same gender, they felt we would be a good fit – and they were right. From the start, we hit it off.
Our connection was rooted in a shared past. Dr Bob was born in Kenya in 1927 and attended high school in Grahamstown, South Africa, during WWII. Even though we were there 50 years apart, I knew the areas he described intimately. I had attended a music festival in Grahamstown during my own posting to South Africa, and his family’s farm in Nakuru, Kenya, was in the same area where I had previously helped run a children’s home. Finding someone in New Zealand who had spent a significant portion of their life in Africa felt like a rare gift.
The synchronicity was awe-inspiring. When I mentioned the village of Njoro, where we had acquired land to build a new children’s home, Dr Bob’s eyes lit up – he knew it like the back of his hand. He had worked on a farm there after the war before leaving for London to study medicine. He told me stories of his beloved horse and his time returning platoons of soldiers from British protectorate islands in the Indian Ocean.

Over the last year, our friendship has deepened. Though Dr Bob is losing his sight and is profoundly deaf, his spirit remains vibrant. He lives alone in a safari-style lodge, his wife having passed thirty years ago, and his children living overseas. Recently, we navigated the process of getting him new hearing aids in Richmond, a journey that resulted in a “brand-spanking-new” pair that has significantly improved the quality of his life.
Dr Bob is also a prolific writer. A retired GP from Reefton, he has self-published several memoirs. Despite his failing eyesight, he remains a curious, positive gentleman.

Together, we’ve used AI to help him craft letters to politicians and news agencies, advocating for the elderly. He struggled with a specialised keyboard meant to aid those with vision issues. Instead, I showed him how to enlarge the text on his screen, which proved much more effective. Inspired by his dedication, I have even started writing my own novel, and our latest project together is recording his memoirs for his grandchildren.

Our friendship is a two-way street. We inspire each other and share our deepest musings. I often reassure him that our time together is a joy, never a chore. I always leave his home with a sense of deep gratitude.

Better Living Conditions is a multi-agency initiative established by ACNT in 2021 to support older people living in unsafe or unsanitary conditions that affect their health and wellbeing.
Over recent years, we have seen a growing number of enquiries and referrals, reflecting an increasing need for understanding and compassionate support in this area. Better Living Conditions brings together a wide range of organisations, including Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council, Police, Fire and Emergency NZ, Te Whatu Ora, Kāinga Ora, and the Ministry of Social Development, as well as ACNT. By working together and sharing knowledge, we can take a coordinated and respectful approach to complex situations. We have identified a number of common issues:
• Different understandings of what severe domestic squalor and self-neglect look like, and uncertainty about which service should take the lead. It can be difficult to access help when needs do not fit neatly within service criteria.
• Friends, whānau, neighbours, and professionals often feel worried, powerless or unsure how to support positive, lasting change.
• Limited assessment tools, which can make it harder to identify underlying or unmet needs.
• Ethical and safety concerns for staff supporting people in these situations.

Our Elder Abuse Response (EARS) team Cat, Tanya & Jamie
While the challenges are complex, there have also been many encouraging outcomes. With time, patience and coordinated support, some people - often living with limited finances, health challenges and little social supporthave been able to make meaningful changes to their living environments and reconnect with health services. Even small improvements can make a big difference, helping people feel safer, healthier and more comfortable in their own homes.
The number of older adults needing this kind of support continues to grow. Age Concern provides support through our Elder Abuse Response (EARS) team, Cat Baker, Tanya Charles and Jamie Pottage, in close collaboration with our Better Living Conditions partners. Support may include regular visits, psychosocial support, help with government services, fire and safety planning, and connections to health care.
Building trust takes time, but by working at each person’s pace, with a carefully considered multi-agency approach, Better Living Conditions helps create pathways toward safer homes, improved wellbeing and stronger connections.

As we get older, it’s important to give some earnest thought to how best to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and the things we’ve worked hard for. Taking time now to get your legal affairs in order allows you to live with confidence and peace of mind for the years ahead.
Whether you’re updating your will, arranging an enduring power of attorney, or considering a move into a retirement village, we can guide you through the process with care and clarity.
A well-drafted will ensures your wishes are honoured and your family is spared unnecessary stress. That might mean organising your home and other assets, so they pass smoothly to the people you choose or recording your funeral wishes. It may also involve setting aside personal keepsakes or mementos for family and friends; or reviewing who you’ve named as beneficiaries to ensure your plans reflect your current circumstances.
An enduring power of attorney lets you decide who can make important decisions for you if you’re unable to do so in future. It’s an essential safeguard - ensuring that someone you trust can manage your finances, property, and personal care in line with your values and preferences. Putting these in place now provides reassurance that your affairs will always be handled with respect and care and can avoid unnecessary expense in the future.
If you’re exploring licence-to-occupy agreements for retirement living, it’s vital to understand your rights and obligations before signing. We can also assist with selling your home, whether that be for downsizing or looking at retirement village options.
Our experienced team takes the time to listen, explain your options in plain English, and tailor solutions to your individual circumstances. We believe good planning isn’t just about documentsit’s about dignity, security, and choice.
Let’s make sure your next chapter is well protected, so your documentation meets the legal requirements.
Protect what matters most with trusted legal advice for later life.

Last year, we enjoyed several fun eBus outings that brought people together to explore new places and try the eBus in a relaxed, social setting. This journey was part of Age Concern’s All On Board programme, which helps older people build confidence, independence and have fun using the eBus service across Nelson Tasman.
One highlight was our October visit to the new Nelson Bus Hub at Millers Acre, where participants enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of the Bus Hub project in progress. The outing was coordinated by ACNT Community Support Coordinator Jackie MacIntyre, alongside Volunteer Bus Buddy Mark Rosser, to support participants travelling from Wakefield (via Brightwater) and back, helping make the experience smooth and enjoyable.

Read Jackie’s reflections about this outing. The New Bus Hub is found at Millers Acre, with a Puriri tree at its centre, where you will also find the River Kitchen café and i-site / DOC Whakatū / Nelson Visitor Centre. The central area for meeting and finding out what is available in Nelson & Tasman.
We were met for the tour by Rebecca Dawkins, the project manager at NCC, and Toby Sullivan, the Isaac Construction contractor. It is a well-organised construction site with health and safety as a priority, which makes it a great opportunity for us to see inside and hear about it. Rebecca said they're pleased with the progress, and both were excited about how it’s been looking and to see the finished project.
As we walked around the site, they happily answered questions about the work, where the materials had come from, and the planned eco-friendly ‘jellyfish’ filter system, designed to capture and clean the water before it is discharged into the Maitai River. Toby said they started this in July 2025 and are making good time to be open before Christmas.
As we walk through, I notice the stone posts with carvings, these are designed by Motueka artist Tim Wraight called ‘Seven Rivers’. The pillars are made from aggregate (gravel) taken from different major regional rivers and the wood panels insets are carved in tōtara from the hills above Motueka, with the glass sections produced by Jim Mackay. And lastly there is the stunning mural on the Glasgow Harley building towering over the new bus hub for all to see and be delighted by, featuring the kāruhiruhi (pied shag) mural, Waitī, Waitā, Waiora by toi Māori artists Charles & Janine Williams.

Our Wednesday group started off small four years ago and has now grown in quantity, quality, repertoire, and reputation. Under the guidance of our wonderful volunteer Rochelle and the amazing support of Megan in the Nelson office, this group now call themselves the Hummin’ Strummers, and they’re in hot demand around the town. As well as providing entertainment at ACNT events, they’ve been invited to perform at community events, most recently at the Nelson Cathedral’s free lunchtime concert series in the build-up to Christmas.

The next stage of the Bridge to Better project has begun, and Bridge Street in Nelson City centre will be closed to vehicles for most of the year. Throughout the upgrade, pedestrian access will remain open and our office at 18 Bridge Street continues to operate as usual.
We encourage you to use the parking available in Montgomery Square car park behind our office. From there, it’s just a short walk via the Phoenix Arcade (enter beside Bin Inn) through to our front door on Bridge Street.
We apologise for any inconvenience. We are monitoring the situation and will keep you updated if anything changes.

If you are considering making a Real Estate decision or would simply just like to know where your property sits in the current market call me today for a no obligation appraisal.

This autumn, Beyond the Face returns with the NEW 2026 edition featuring a selection of new faces from our community.
This much-loved portrait exhibition honours the lives and lived experiences of older people in our region. The exhibition features twelve striking portraits by professional photographer Tim Cuff. Accompanying each portrait, journalist Fiona Terry brings these images to life through thoughtfully captured stories that reflect on moments and memories.
This year’s exhibition holds special significance as Age Concern Nelson Tasman celebrates its 50th anniversary. For half a century, ACNT has worked alongside older people, advocating, supporting, and amplifying voices that deserve to be heard. Beyond the Face reflects this enduring commitment. Each portrait invites us to look beyond surface impressions, beyond silver hair and lined skin, to see the extraordinary experiences, challenges overcome, families raised, careers built, risks taken, friendships formed, and communities shaped.

Once again, we will launch the exhibition with a celebratory morning tea event in the Granary building in Founders Heritage Park. The exhibition will be on display here for three weeks as part of Tuku 26 Whakatū, a celebration of Nelson’s arts and heritage.

• Open daily 10am - 4.30pm
• Admission is free for locals
• Come by car, plenty of parking
• Hourly bus ser vice

On display at Founders Heritage Park from 15th April to 3rd May before moving on to other community venues around the region.

Our 2025 exhibition was on display at Summerset in the Sun from January to February 2026. We had several participants in attendance for our morning tea event: Pat in front of her portrait, Wolfgang reading one of his stories, and Mirdza with her husband David. These 2025 portraits will be on display at our offices.
