Highlights from the 2025 Northwest Georgia Skills Challenge

Page 1

2025 SKILLS CHALLENGE COMPETITION OVERVIEW

The AGC Georgia Skills Challenge series continues to set the standard for hands on workforce development, with the Fall 2025 events building on prior momentum and delivering meaningful results for students, schools, and the construction industry.

Once again, the series demonstrated strong growth across fundraising, sponsor engagement, student participation, and overall event impact, cementing its reputation as one of the most influential construction career focused competitions in the nation. Often compared to a high school sporting championship atmosphere,

the Skills Challenges combine technical excellence, school pride, and real world career opportunity. Students compete not just for recognition, but for early entry into career pathways that lead directly to employment in Georgia’s construction industry.

In Fall 2025, 108 unique high schools from across Georgia participated, with student competitors and observers reaching new highs.

Across the eight Skills Challenges, more than 1,300 students competed, with another 1,000 attending as observers, reflecting the growing appeal of skilled trades education among students of all backgrounds.

Female student participation and success remained an important and encouraging component of the 2025 series. Across all regions, young women earned more than one in ten winning placements, with several regions exceeding that benchmark. In the Southeast Georgia and South + Southwest Georgia regional events, female students captured roughly one fifth of all winning positions.

These outcomes highlight the impact of early exposure, supportive educators, and strong local industry engagement in expanding access to construction careers. While participation levels varied by region, the consistent presence of female winners statewide reinforces a positive trajectory for women entering the skilled trades.

Record financial support and in kind contributions from contractor partners and industry sponsors resulted in over $620,000 in documented support. These resources enhanced the experience for students while also allowing program leadership to reinvest over $220,000 in proceeds back into participating schools to support classroom instruction and program needs.

Events were held in Augusta, Columbus, Gainesville, Marietta, Moultrie, Perry, Rome, and Statesboro, ensuring broad geographic access and local engagement.

Core competitions offered at every regional event included Carpentry, Electrical, Masonry, Plumbing, and Welding. In collaboration with SkillsUSA Georgia, students also had opportunities to compete in Cabinetmaking, TeamWorks, and

$620,000

Welding Fabrication. Students who placed in these eight competitions and maintained SkillsUSA Georgia membership earned the opportunity to advance to the SkillsUSA Georgia State Leadership and Skills Conference.

Select regions also featured additional competitions such as Blueprint Reading, Heavy Equipment Operation, HVAC, Metal Studs and Drywall, Roofing, and Sheet Metal, aligning closely with the industry’s most critical workforce needs and reinforcing the practical, job ready nature of the Skills Challenges.

“The continued growth of the Skills Challenge series speaks volumes about the commitment of our industry partners and the enthusiasm of students across Georgia,” said AGC Georgia CEO Zach Fields. “Each year, we see stronger collaboration, increased participation, and more students gaining the hands on experience

that launches meaningful careers in construction.”

The Fall 2025 series also reflected a continued emphasis on early engagement, with increased participation from elementary and middle school students touring regional events.

Industry leaders, elected officials, educators, and community advocates once again showed their support, with hundreds in attendance statewide.

With sustained industry investment and growing student interest, the AGC Georgia Skills Challenge series remains a cornerstone of workforce development efforts. Planning is already underway to deliver another high caliber series in Fall 2026.

We invite members, partners, and educators to review upcoming dates and join us in shaping the future of Georgia’s construction workforce.
