During my trip to Japan, I experienced something that left a lifelong imprint on how I view kindness, responsibility, and cultural humility. It happened in the most unexpected way through a simple mistake at a subway station.
One evening, while returning to my hotel with my friends, I mistakenly exited through the wrong gate of a busy subway station In Japan’s transit system, your ticket is essential both for entry and exit. I realized, too late, that I had lost my ticket somewhere along the way I suddenly found myself in a strange limbo unable to exit because the gate wouldn’t open, and unable to re-enter because I no longer had the ticket. was completely alone. Confused, anxious, and unsure what to do next, I approached a passer-by and asked a simple question: “Where is the helpdesk?” I was expecting a quick gesture pointing me towards a counter. The man who was a complete stranger did not simply point to the helpdesk. He immediately took it upon himself to help me. He walked with me from one ticket counter to another, explaining the situation in Japanese, making sure the staff understood, and patiently navigating through the formalities on my behalf He didn’t rush. He didn’t leave halfway. He stayed with me through the entire process, ensuring I was safely guided out of the
station and even helped me find my way back to my hotel route. That moment transformed a stressful situation into an unforgettable display of empathy. His kindness wasn’t transactional or obligatory it was genuine, voluntary, and deeply human. It reflected something bigger: the culture of Japan, where warmth and responsibility extend beyond workplaces and institutions into everyday life.
Throughout my trip, I repeatedly met people like him From strangers in the city to employees of ASO Corporation and members of AFS, I experienced some of the kindest interactions I’ve ever had. Whether it was helping with navigation, translating an entire conversation, or simply making sure I felt welcome, their thoughtfulness seemed woven into the fabric of how they lived and worked.
This experience didn’t just help me exit a subway station it helped me understand the profound impact of empathy in action. It taught me that kindness doesn’t need scale to be meaningful; even small gestures can become life-changing when done with sincerity.

During those 28 days, I got to see how advanced Japan is in technology and innovation, but what truly impressed me were the people their discipline, respect, humility, and the way they value even the smallest details.

I am Dr. Ashish Singh Parihar, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, PDPM IIITDM Jabalpur (M.P.), and I had the honour of being selected as the faculty representative and mentor for the Indian delegation under the prestigious MIRAI-Setu 2025 People-to-People Exchange Programme of one month between India and Japan Our delegation comprised 40 members (39 students and 1 faculty), and I was privileged to guide and mentor the entire team throughout this enriching international journey.

academic, cultural, and emotional experience During our first week in Tokyo, we explored Japan’s profound heritage through visits to traditional shrines, temples, cultural sites, and science-based learning centers, which provided a balanced exposure to spirituality history, and innovation.
In the following two weeks, the delegation was divided into two groups Tokyo and Fukuoka, and I joined the Fukuoka team. Students underwent structured internships at globally reputed Japanese organizations, including Suzuki, Seko, ASO, Kyushu Electric, Kyuden etc They gained firsthand understanding of Japanese work ethics, discipline, punctuality, domain-specific skills, and corporate culture, which are fundamental pillars of Japan’s global reputation.
In the final week, the entire delegation reunited and continued learning through visits to Mount Fuji, JAXA Science Hub, leading universities such as Kyushu University and Shizuoka University, along with renewed cultural immersions. Our journey concluded with a presentation at the Embassy of India in Tokyo and interaction with representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan, where we shared our learnings and reflections.
This journey was not just travel it was transformation, connection, and lifelong learning. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Government of India, AFS India, AFS Japan, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Japan, and Infosys Japan for their exceptional support and vision. It all began on 2nd October, when I landed at Haneda Airport, Tokyo, greeted warmly by the ever-smiling AFS Japan staff. Their kindness and hospitality instantly made me feel at home, marking the beginning of an unforgettable journey. The first few days in Shinagawa were filled with wonder visiting JAXA and Nikko Shrine As a PhD student in Climate Change, tepping into JAXA Tsukuba
Space Center, an organization whose satellite data I often use in my research, was nothing short of a dream come true.
Soon, as part of the Fukuoka group, we moved to a new city and spent 20 incredible days that blended technology, culture, and personal growth. Participating in this immersive program was a lifechanging experience that transformed my perspective both personally and professionally. From the orientation sessions and learning Japanese customs and food culture to the indepth lectures on world problems by Professor Haruhiko Kurodu, every moment was packed with learning. Visits to top facilities like JAXA Tsukuba Space Center and state-of-the-art corporations such as ASO provided invaluable insights into innovation, teamwork, and technology. Highlights included hands-on exploration of hospitals using advanced IT systems, tours of high-tech industries, and engaging with local engineers, students, and global business leaders.

If you had asked me a year ago where I saw myself, I wouldn’t have said “representing India in Japan as part of a Ministry of Foreign Affairs program ” . But life sometimes hands you moments bigger than you expect - and this was mine
I’m a researcher in mechanics and design at IIT Hyderabad, usually buried in simulations and material models. Japan has always been on my radar for its precision and thoughtful engineering but experiencing it up close hit differently.

Putting together a month of unforgettable experiences into a few paragraphs is really hard When I received the congratulatory email from AFS India, I knew it would be an incredible journey but the MIRAI-Setu experience exceeded every single expectation that I had. This program left no stone unturned when it came to showing us Japan from technical and academic visits to cultural and even everyday experiences like exploring local malls.

The intern period involved working at Kyushu Electric (Kyuden International) and it was an amazing experience to come together and work with the Japanese employees who brought with them their own diverse set of ideas and perspectives which truly helped me gain deeper insights about international businesses and taught me the value of communication beyond language barriers. It was really fun overcoming the language barrier and conversing with everyone there.
Cultural visits involved everything from food factories to castles to shrines to lantern making to visiting Mt. Fuji. I also enjoyed exploring Japan independently I feel that those solo moments helped me connect with the country and its people on a deeper level

The next day we visited JAXA Space Center and the Imperial Palace, and the Tokyo Tower view from our hotel already made me fall in love with the city Our week in Hamamatsu included company visits to Suzuki, Yamaha, and Kyowa Leather, where I admired their innovation and cleanliness. We explored Nikko Shrine, Shinkyo Bridge, and a green tea farm, experiencing Japanese festivals and local culture.
In Tokyo, I enjoyed Shibuya and Harajuku, Meiji Jingu Shrine, Fuji Television, Tokyo Skytree, and cultural sessions like ukiyo-e and houto noodle making. Celebrating my birthday at Tokyo Tower was unforgettable, and visiting Mt. Fuji let me witness the first snow of the season
We also learned about disaster preparedness, waste management, and visited universities, making lifelong friends On the final day, we visited the Indian Embassy and gave our farewell presentation, feeling grateful for the care of our senseis. He was German, and I shared my experience of visiting Germany in Japanese with him. That interaction made me realise how language dissolves barriers and connects people far beyond nationality.
As a mechanical engineering student, visiting companies like Suzuki and other manufacturing facilities was one of the most eye-opening parts of the trip. Watching their production lines, studying workflow organisation, and seeing how even small components were handled with consistent accuracy gave me a realistic understanding of engineering practices. One of my most memorable moments was in Hamamatsu. While searching for dinner, a friend mentioned a tiny old man ’ s ramen shop It seated barely five people, but the ramen and gyoza we had there were soul-filling. The old man told us he had run that shop for 42 years, and the contentment on his face made the meal unforgettable
We also visited around 18 companies, aiming to bridge perception gaps between Japan and India. We observed, learned, and understood differences gaining insights not only from our fields but from many others as well
Japan became a home away from home. With an exciting schedule of company and industry visits and cultural immersion activities, every day had new learnings and experiences in store for us This included group discussions at the headquarters of renowned corporations to exploring shrines and making traditional noodles with Fuji San as the backdrop.
Conversations with Japanese locals and professionals alike broadened my worldview and helped me see how values, work ethics, and communication styles vary between cultures yet can be bridged I was able to witness how the concepts of social and crosscultural psychology are reflected in everyday life. It was also a chance to work on my Japanese proficiency skills, inculcate new values, and step outside my comfort zone. This rekindled my love for the
language and has developed my personality
From navigating the bustling lifestyle of Tokyo to witnessing the peaceful beauty of Hamamatsu, I experienced the contrasts that make Japan so unique. I will always cherish the memories and connections formed over this dream of a month.

My one-month immersion in Japan was far more than an academic or cultural tour it was a transformative journey that reshaped my discipline, global outlook, and personal values. From the tranquil forests and ancient temples of Kamakura to the bustling skyscrapers and neon streets of Tokyo, I witnessed a country that balances tradition and innovation with effortless grace. We visited the House of Representatives, explored heritage destinations, and experienced cutting-edge technology, walking tens of kilometers a day and traveling across prefectures in Shinkansen trains speeding at 250 km/hr. Each experience strengthened my resilience and broadened my understanding of efficiency, respect, and
mindfulness. Among all the moments, one incident truly stood out as the epitome of Japanese courtesy: during one of our long highway travels, I accidentally left my important folder at a service centre. I assumed it was lost, but the AFS Japan staff who were always meticulously checking after every halt to ensure no one forgot their belongings noticed it immediately. Without any fuss or complaint, they collected the folder before leaving and handed it back to me with kindness and reassurance. Their proactive care and sense of responsibility reflected the deeper cultural values that make Japan exceptional. Throughout the trip, I learned from the locals’ punctuality, humility, and dedication to detail, qualities that have inspired lasting changes in my own habits.

While visiting the Japanese companies, I understood that perfection and precision is a part of Japanese peoples’ upbringing hence it is naturally reflected in their work as well. These values are deep embedded in Japanes culture. I admired this effortlessly systematic lifestyle and civic sens they hold as a society. Their considerate, respectful and disciplined temperament encouraged me to find good in people. It gave me an optimistic view towards life
The technological advancement achieve by Japan can be observed in their day to day life. Visits to places like Miraikan, Yamaha road to innovation museum, Mitsubishi Minatomirai Industria Museum highlighted the development even more.
