Legendary Debate Coach HOUSTON - A look back at the century of life experienced by Dr. Thomas F. Freeman, a man who has shaped the narrative of Black youth of every decade since the fifties on the campus of Texas Southern University (TSU), where he started as a philosophy professor in 1949 and went on to found the historic TSU Debate Team. Through the years, Dr. Freeman has been recognized and awarded numerous times for his influence in the Black community through education and a lifetime commitment to excellence in achievement. Best known as the inspiration for a character played by Denzel Washington in the 2007 film, The Great Debaters, Freeman trained the actor in vocal and debate techniques for the movie. Freeman has taken other notable figures under his tutelage such as Barbara Jordan, Mickey-Leland, and Dr. Martin Luther King. Today, at 100 years of life, Dr. Freeman is still very much active in the community with the debate team and Honors College, named after him in 2009, and was recently awarded the Phoenix Award, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundationʼs highest award given.

OPINION & EDITORIAL African-American boys and Partin’ the Waters: A mindset for the men are killing themselves holiday season and no one seems to care Men’s Health Network By Dr. Salvatore J. Giorgianni, Jr. PharmD
African-American boys and men in America continue to kill themselves at an alarming rate. Over the past several months the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has released several reports about the demographics of this national disgrace. African-American men and boys continue to have a higher death rate in nine of the 10 leading causes of death than is seen in women. It is most unfortunate that the overall healthcare system is inherently non-male friendly, and, in some health care situations men tell us they do not feel welcome at all. One consequence of this shocking and disturbing reality is the male suicide rate in America. Males are 3 to 7 times more likely than females to commit suicide, which explains why suicide is the 6th leading cause of death for males. According to the Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, African-Americans are 20% more like-
ly to experience serious mental health problems than the general population. African-American youth, particularly youngmen, who are exposed to violence are at a greater risk for PTSD by over 25%. African-Americans are also more likely to be exposed to factors that increase the risk for developing a mental health condition, such as discrimination, social isolation, homelessness and exposure to violence. In the African-American community, people often misunderstand what a mental health condition is and therefore the subject is uncommon. This lack of understanding leads many to believe that a mental health condition is a personal weakness or a form of punishment and that impedes boys and men from talking about emotional issues let alone seeking medical help. A careful reading of the CDC data shows that the current rate of suicide for males is the overwhelming majority of all suicides. And the news gets worse. Recently, the CDC highlighted a significant increase in the number of suicides for teens and younger men. The incidence of suicide for Millennials increased almost
300% from the 1950s for the Baby Boomer generation. Most male suicides occur in boys and men who have not been diagnosed as depressed or have a history of mental health issues. We believe, in part, this is because: a lack of cultural competence in mental health care, which results in misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment for those of color; African-American men, like men in general, access health care far less frequently then do women; there are no clear guidelines on when and how to screen men; health care providers do not properly or regularly screen them for emotional-wellness. The importance of the screening is underscored by the fact that this is something integral to Well Woman Visits, and for post-partum female care. Earlier this year, Men’s Health Network (MHN) convened a meeting of 27 internationally recognized experts in health care and mental health to examine the failure to identify mental stress and depression in boys and men and propose a comprehensive callto-action that provides a blueprint for identifying and helping boys and men in trouble before it is too late. In the tract Generosity to Justice, the story is told about the nobility of the human spirit in the wake of a disaster- Hurricane Katrina. Thousands of Black residents of New Orleans revealed an open sore in the land of the plenty. A superpower was paralyzed to mount an effective relief effort despite the heroic efforts of thousands of first responders. 200 women in Uganda earning $1.20 per day breaking rocks into gravel donated $900. Hurricane Katrina revealed a soft underbelly of boats that were stuck on the bottom in the Big Easy. Nevertheless, the women in the under- developed world parked their dissatisfaction with the world to assist brothers and sisters across the ocean to recover. If you are in the dumps, one of the best medications is to help someone caught in a cross. Helping someone caught in a cross decreases anxiety and relieves
depression. The women of Uganda canceled their pity party and got in the fight. This is not a swipe against righteous use of mind candy to restore equilibrium and health. Part of running the unforgiving race is giving more than what is practical and advisable. False and fake benevolence is not the answer. We advance justice by attacking systemic issues, not just their symptoms. Ernest McMillan, legendary SNCC organizer and co-founder of the Fifth Ward Enrichment Program taught us that if we are fishing children out of the river year after year, it behooves us to go upstream and find out why. Perhaps there is a structural problem that can be addressed. Kindness downstream is good. We are commanded by the divine to do good, love justice and walk humbly. Bicycles and dolls at X-mas are not a substitute for livable wage jobs. Turkeys and hams donated by politicians, preachers and do-gooders temporarily plug the leak and provide a salve for guilty consciences. HEALTH Mayor Turner, Judge Hidalgo on mission to end AIDS epidemic by 2030

HOUSTON - Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Judge Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo have signed on to the Fast-Track Cities Paris Declaration to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. The Dec. 4 signing marked the conclusion of Biomedical HIV Prevention Summit, an annual event that brings together clinicians and health professionals to highlight the role biomedical prevention tools in ending the epidemic. This year’s event was hosted in Houston. “Ending HIV is not only a lifesaving endeavor, it is also an economically sound approach that saves millions of dollars in health care costs,” said Mayor Turner. “I’m proud to add Houston as a Fast Track City, complementing the quality work of the Houston Health Department in ending the HIV epidemic.” “Today, we are proudly reaffirming our commitment to helping those living with HIV/AIDS and to ending the epidemic,” said Judge Hidalgo. “We will continue to provide the best quality care for our HIV/AIDS community and work to stop new transmissions from occurring, but we know there is so much more to be done.” The Fast-Track Cities Paris Declaration is a commitment by municipalities to achieve the 90-90-90 HIV treatment
targets by 2020. These targets will rapidly reduce new HIV infections and AIDS related deaths and put cities, now to include Houston and Harris County, on the “fast track” to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. The Declaration calls on cities to strengthen their local HIV/AIDS responses and meet a set of targets to significantly reduce new HIV infections and end-AIDS related deaths. These targets are to ensure that 90 percent of people living with HIV (PLHIV) will know their status, that 90 percent of all PLHIV will receive sustained anti-retroviral treatment and that 90 percent of all PLHIV on anti-retroviral treatment will have durable viral suppression. More than 1,200 new HIV infections occur every year in Houston/Harris County, where more than 28,000 people live with the disease. Houston/ Harris County is a national hotspot for new HIV diagnoses, along with Washington D.C., San Juan and Puerto Rico. The Houston Health Department offers free and confidential HIV and other STD testing at its health centers and mobile clinic. Its mobile program operates 24/7 and people can text 281-962-8378 to be connected with HCPH outreach staff to set up a time to meet for a free and confidential HIV and Syphilis test. “IAPAC welcomes Houston and Harris County to the global network of Fast-Track Cities committed to accelerating their local AIDS responses and placing affected communities at the center of efforts to get more people tested and linked to prevention and treatment services, as well as addressing barriers such as stigma related to HIV, mental health, substance use,” said Dr. José M. Airbnb, NAACP regional partnership aims to bring economic empowerment in Houston

HOUSTON - Airbnb joined the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in Houston Dec. 3 to announce its newest regional partnership, designed to create economic empowerment opportunities for underserved communities. The Houston announcement is the fourth regional launch of 2019, following partnerships earlier this year in Atlanta, Seattle, and Chicago. “We are excited about this exciting partnership with the NAACP in Houston. Through our work
with the NAACP in Houston, we want to invite the Black community to learn about hosting opportunities, supplier diversity, and careers at Airbnb. Home sharing is a great way for communities of color to earn valuable extra income and highlight all that Houston has to offer, as one of the largest and most diverse cities in the country,” said Tyi McCray with Airbnb. “NAACP is committed to creating intergenerational wealth and economic opportunities for all Black Americans. In a city where 23 percent of the population is Black,

Queen & Slim: Black trauma is the new film genre By Todd Travon Rogers
HOUSTON - Queen & Slim is a romantic drama with Lena Waithe, best known for bringing projects like The Chi and Master of None to HBO, and Melina Matsoukas, who made her directorial debut with the 2019 film. The screenwriter described the film as a modern-day love story that takes inspiration from Bonnie & Clyde with an urban twist – following the African- American couple as they evade law after a deadly incident during a traffic stop.

Although, the intentions of the film were good, many movie-goers took to social media after opening night to express their concern for the subject matter and depiction of black love and violence that takes place at the end of the film.
“Don’t go see this [film],” one commenter said, “Y’all are buying out theaters to see black people killed at the hands of the police? I don’t need a movie to see that, it happens all the time.” The film made its theatrical release on Nov. 27, after rave reviews during the American Film Institute (AFI) festival earlier that month.

What does the end of Kamala Harris’ presidential run mean for the Black woman’s dream? By N.L. Preston
HOUSTON - She was poised at all times, bull-doggish when needed and a fierce force to be reckoned with when it came to slashing good ole boys on Democratic debate stages, Kamala Harris gave women of color across the country hope that they could- possibly- one day burst through the greatest glass ceiling ever put in place in American politics. Many in this generation forget that a torch had already been lit by the late, great Shirley Chisholm, who was the “first” of many for Black men and women in politics. In 1968, Chisholm became the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress. In 1972, she became the first Black candidate for a major party’s nomination for President of the United States, and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. Chisholm was also the first woman to appear in a United States presidential debate. “I am not the candidate of Black America, although I am Black and proud,” Chisholm said when announcing her run. “I am not the candidate of the woman’s movement of this country, although I am a woman and I am equally proud of that.” Like Chisholm, Harris was also a trailblazer in her career. Harris, a lawyer, previously served as the 27th District Attorney of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011 and 32nd Attorney
for programs that helped people find jobs instead of putting them in prison, but also fought to keep people in prison even after they were proved innocent. She refused to pursue the death penalty against a man who killed a police officer, but also defended California’s death penalty system in court. She implemented training programs to address police officers’ racial biases, but also resisted calls to get her office to investigate certain police shootings.” “Her past represents her thinking”
Visibly upset, Harris announced that, due to a lack of funds, she would have to end her run for the White House. “I’ve taken stock and looked at this from every angle, and over the last few days have come to one of the hardest decisions of my life.” General of California from 2011 until 2017. She kept social media abuzz after ripping into other candidates, specifically Democratic front-runner and former Vice President Joe Biden, who was often visibly shaken after going head
to head with Harris. But as good as her public stage persona was, further exciting the new generation and the #BlackGirlMagic movement, some Black voters still refused to support her. Specifically, they said, they felt she was against the progress of our people. “I don’t think she should have been in there [the White House] at all, she put too many Black folk in jail,” said Roy Malonson, owner of African American News and Issues. “Her past represents her thinking along with Biden and [Michael] Bloomberg. Biden with Anita Hill and Bloomberg with the ‘Stop and Search’; they can apologize and ask or forgiveness all they want, but they pulled an okie-doke.”
Malonson went on to say, “Blacks are the only ones who forgive. Black folks should have serious concerns. I had concerns with her hollering she’s Black and hollering for forgiveness. It goes back to the old scripture, Mark 11:25.” That scripture quotes, “And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in Heaven may forgive you your trespasses.” So, what in Harris’ past needs forgiveness? Critics say, just look at her record. Political writer German Lopez cited issues in Harris’ self-proclaimed role as “progressive prosecutor.” Lopez wrote, “a close examination of Harris’ record shows it’s filled with contradictions. She pushed
Despite the doubters, it appeared Harris had a lot going for her. She was bi-racial; half-Jamaican and half-Indian, and a woman, so she represented the minority population in multiple ways. And she is one tough cookie who does not back down, therefore being lauded a top-tier candidate equipped to take on President Donald Trump in the 2020 election, but that dream came to an end on Dec.3. Visibly upset, but still with the heart of a champion, Harris announced that, due to a lack of funds, she would have to end her run for the White House. “I’ve taken stock and looked at this from every angle, and over the last few days have come to one of the hardest decisions of my life. My campaign for president simply doesn’t have the financial resources we need to continue,” she
told her supporters. “And as the campaign has gone on, it has become harder and harder to raise the money we need to compete. In good faith, I can’t tell you, my supporters and volunteers, that I have a path forward if I don’t believe I do.” During a time when Black women in America are depending more and more on champions to lead, did she fail us? Did we lose our footing? Are our dreams dying? What does this mean for us? The answers are simple. Hell no, she did not fail us and we must keep doing what we do best: MOVING FORWARD! “It is disappointing to see Senator Harris drop out of the presidential race. She often times, through her lived experiences, brought the issues impacting Black America to the forefront. I believe Black women will not let this disappointment deter us from challenging all of the presidential candidates to speak to our issues. The black women’s vote is key to victory for any candidate that wants to win,” said Melanie Campbell, President and CEO of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP) and National Convener of the Black Women’s Roundtable (BWR).
