HOUSTON - We always love it when a teen is doing amazing things, and we especially love it when they make BLACK HISTORY at the same time. Aldine ISD’s Nimitz Senior High School student Angel Allen served an amazing dose of “Black Excellence” when she took home top honors at the 61st annual Livestock Show and Auction earlier this year. Houston actor and producer Troy Hogan is a man of principle, faith, honesty and humility. His deep-rooted faith in the Lord has kept him moving in the right direction. Now, Hogan is currently working on a film that was shot in our back yard –”Bull” will premiere at SXSW Film Festival in Austin on March 15, releasing nationwide on March 20.

HOUSTON – “Rest in the Lord and wait patiently; trust also in him and things shall come to pass.” A quote of such value, sapphires, and pure gold are one of many lessons that Houston actor and producer Troy Hogan has learned throughout his life and career. A man of principle, faith, honesty and humility, Hogan grew up in a single-parent home where his mother played both roles, and also took care of her brothers and sisters. Through her drive, hard work and persistence, Hogan’s mother became an important figure in his life. “She wouldn’t let up, she was tremendous on being relentless,” Hogan said. “As the middle child and the first REMEMBERING MS. sister of her family, she took care of her loved ones and myself as her only child. As I got older, I felt the necessity to take care of those I love and use the God-given talents to take care of my family.” His deep-rooted faith in the Lord has kept him moving in the right direction. “There’s a quote that goes, the devil doesn’t like me and he knows I feel the same,” Hogan said. “He knew I felt the same way when I got baptized. I always felt that things got rougher afterward because once you’ve dedicated yourself to the Lord, the devil finds every reason to attack.” The South Park native graduated HOGAN cont’d on page 7

FORMER HOUSTON TEXAN HOSTS RACE FOR SICKLE CELL TRAIT AWARENESS

For more than 10 years, AOF has been educating student-athletes, coaches, teachers and parents about the effects of SCT. Darling, a former Houston Texan, founded AOF to honor his twin brother, Devaughn Darling, who died from complications of SCT.
HOUSTON – More than 300 runners and walkers crossed the finish line in Stude Park on Feb. 23 to educate the public on the dangers of Sickle Cell Trait (SCT). They participated in the 10th annual Darling Dash 10K/5K/1K Race for #SickleCellTrait, presented by UT Physicians and hosted by local nonprofit, As One Foundation (AOF). For more than 10 years, AOF has been educating student-athletes, coaches, teachers and parents about the effects of SCT. “I started this foundation to honor my brother’s memory by educating others about his death from SCT,” says Devard Darling, founder of AOF. “Over the past 10 years, we’ve been able to not only educate people, but we’ve also provided free Sickle Cell screenings across Houston and the nation. The funds raised this year will allow us to go to local schools with our Operation Hydration program and inform coaches and young athletes on the effects of SCT.” Darling, a former Houston Texan, founded AOF to honor his twin brother, Devaughn Darling, who died from complications of SCT. The brothers were on football scholarships at Florida State University when a rigorous football practice left Devaughn dehydrated and exhausted. Before his death, the twins didn’t know they had the trait. SCT has been classified as one of the top four non-injury killers of collegiate athletes. Sickle Cell Trait is not a disease, but having it means that a person has inherited the sickle cell gene from one of his or her parents. Risk factors for people living with SCT are dehydration, exertion and elevation. Primary prevention for an SCT event is warming-up, hydrating and resting. M I KE B LO O M B ERG Dear Reader, Thank you for taking the time to learn about The Greenwood Initiative. As someone who has been very lucky in life, I often say my story would only have been possible in America — and that’s true. But I also know that because of the artificial barriers of discrimination, my story likely would have turned out very differently if I had been Black, and that more Black Americans of my generation would have ended up with far more wealth, had they been white. Building Generational Wealth for Black Families is Critical. That’s why I launched The Greenwood Initiative in Tulsa last month. I visited the site of the Black Wall Street Massacre, where a white mob decimated the prosperous community of Greenwood. It is to the memory of the lost lives and promise of Greenwood that we’ve dedicated The Greenwood Initiative: a plan to address the systematic bias that has kept Black Americans from building wealth.
THE GREENWOOD PLAN WILL: • Create 1 million new Black homeowners • Double the number of new Black-owned businesses • Invest $70 billion in the country’s 100 most disadvantaged neighborhoods
Fixing the System for Black Families. When I was mayor of New York, I was proud to take on the systematic inequality that held back too many New Yorkers. We increased education funding, built 650 new schools and raised Black graduation rates to record highs. We led an ambitious effort to reduce poverty and managed the largest amount of affordable housing in the nation. And as President, I will work even more aggressively to combat inequality nationwide. I understand that undoing generations of systematic discrimination won’t happen overnight, but we can make progress with a clear vision and a comprehensive plan. I’ve included a pamphlet along with this letter that lays out my plan. When I’m President, implementing The Greenwood Initiative: will be a top priority. Katherine Johnson, one of a group of Black women mathematicians at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) who was celebrated in the 2016 movie “Hidden Figures,” died Feb. 24. She was 101 years old. Johnson is recognized as a pathbreaker for women and African-Americans in the field of spaceflight. The mathematical genius was relied upon to check the work of her superiors — engineers who, at the time, were White and male. Because of her expertise, Johnson was nicknamed “computer.” Her calculations helped to plot the flight of Alan B. Shepard Jr., who became the first American in space when his Mercury spacecraft went aloft in 1961. Johnson developed equations that helped NASA send astronauts into orbit and, later, to the moon. She was overshadowed by the astronauts whose flights she calculated and the department heads under whom she served. The human-computer finally gained the recognition she so rightfully deserved in 2015 when President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom—the country’s highest civilian honor. Her research was celebrated in the best-selling book, “Hidden Figures,” by Margot Lee Shetterly and the Oscar-nominated film starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe in 2016. REMEMBERING MS. FAYE BRYANT (1937-2020)
HOUSTON – Faye Beverly Bryant, a Houston leader known for her stellar work locally and nationally, died Feb. 20 at the age of 82. Many who know her say they will remember her best by her tireless public service. Bryant was the 21st International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority, Inc. During her tenure, Bryant also created the Alpha Kappa Alpha Connection, completed construction on the Sorority’s national headquarters and initiated the African Village Development Program in collaboration with Africare. Bryant served at the Houston Independent School District for more than four decades. She taught at Booker T. WashMs. Faye Bryant ington High School, served as a counselor at Bellaire High School and worked as the Director of Magnet Schools for HISD. In 1998, Bryant became the first African-American to serve as Deputy Superintendent for School Administration in HISD. In 2002, Bryant retired from the school board as Executive Deputy Superintendent after 42 years of service. Bryant’s funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 29, at 10 a.m. at Fountain of Praise Church at 13950 Hillcroft.

LOS ANGELES, CA. – It was a somber, star-studded event as celebrities, athletes and other who’s who of the nation joined fans in mourning at the Staples Center, also known as “The House that Kobe Built” for a “Celebration of Life” in honor of the late Lakers legend and his 13-year-old daughter, who died together in a tragic helicopter crash. What seemingly overshadowed the moving tributes paid by other legends, including Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’ Neal, Beyoncé and Alicia Keys, the focus turned to the lack of acknowledgment Kobe Bryant’s parents received, especially from his widow, Vanessa. On Feb. 24, a day ironically matching the retired jersey numbers for Kobe (24) and his beloved daughter Gianna aka “GiGi” (2), the public said a final goodbye to them and seven others who also

perished in the crash. The “20” of the date, according to Vanessa Bryant, signified the number of years the husband and wife shared, and the number of years Kobe spent as a Laker. All eyes were obviously on Kobe’s widow and surviving children, but some fans were angry that his mother, Pam, and father – former NBA player Joe “Jellybean” Bryant - were barely mentioned. Fans lit up social media, expressing their frustration. Fans also felt Kobe’s two sisters, Sharla and Shaya, were also slighted. One of the most vocal was Twitter user Angela Blair, whose tweets caught the eyes of several publications. “It would be a SHAME before GOD if they exclude #Kobe’s parents from speaking at the services today! I don’t care WHAT happened! That would be

In a 2016 interview, Kobe told ESPN that his relationship with his parents was “sh*t,” adding that he was proud of his sisters for starting their careers and not relying on him financially. Lee High School in 1985—now named Margaret Long Wisdom High School—where he found his skill in acting but didn’t realize it was his passion at the time. “I didn’t, my high school teacher saw something in me my freshman year,” Hogan said. “I took the theater/drama class because that was the only elective I could choose.” Hogan then went to Prairie View A&M University where he was a part of the Charles Gilpin Players Theater Troupe and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre in 1993. Hogan interned at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Ga. under the mentorship of Tony Award-winning Broadway and film director Kenny Leon. Hogan worked in various Houston theatres including Main Street, the Alley, the Encore and the Ensemble. Hogan then traded in the big stage for the big screen. This H-town actor is making major moves on our television screens playing in many films and TV

shows like “Friday Night Lights” on NBC, “Mercy Black,” “The Highwaymen,” “Free State of Jones,” “Queen Sugar” on OWN Network and “Righteous Gemstones” on HBO. Hogan has worked alongside many notable actors, including Michael B. Jordan, Matthew McConaughey, Rob Morgan, Mahershala Ali, Courtney B. Vance, Danny McBride, and Connie Britton. Now, Hogan is currently working on a film that was shot in our back yard. In a n e a r- a b a n d o n e d subdivision west of Houston, a wayward teen runs headlong into her equally willful and unforgiving neighbor, an aging bullfighter who’s seen his best days in the arena; it’s a collision that will change them both. “Bull” is centered around 14-year-old Kris (Amber Havard), who destroyed her neighbor’s house out of youthful defiance. To make up for it, she is forced to help her neighbor, Abe Turner (Rob Morgan), an
ex-bull rider scraping by on the Texas rodeo circuit, with errands at home and at his work, where she discovers her passion for bull riding. Yet, as Kris sets out to learn the dangerous sport, bad influences lure her back into defiant ways. Meanwhile, Abe struggles with the aches and pains of growing older and aging out of the only life he has ever known. Together, Kris & Abe forge an unexpected connection, helping each other see new possibilities and hope for the future before it’s too late. Hogan plays Mike, a man of needs and a close friend of Abe, who owns a small farm ranch in north Houston, both of which were a part of the Black rodeo scene. “The bull is just as afraid as the human, he’s coming full speed, but he’s going to close his eyes,” Hogan said, quoting a line from the film. “You can’t have fear, no matter what’s charging toward you.” To the fans of “Queen Sugar” and “Righteous Gemstones” who were looking for some insight on the up-
coming seasons of the two shows, you’ll have to wait until they air again on your TV screens. When asked about what words of advice to give to the aspiring actors, Hogan said, “Don’t try to make a name for your-
self, do your job and be proficient at it, be confident and get out of your own way.” He went on to add, “There’s a motto I go by, be 1% better every day because, by the end of the year, you’ll be 365% better than

She received her MA in Communications Management from the University of Southern California. Future Farmers of America (FFA) students and their livestock animals filled the floor of the arena of the M.O. Campbell Educational Center (MOC) to show off their prized possessions. Angel was named this year’s “Grand Champion,” which is the highest honor a competitor in the show can earn. Angel is also the first African-American woman to receive the honor. Angel lovingly raised her steer for nine months, and was paid $16,500 in the Aldine ISD Sale of Champions auction after her win. The monies received by winning students are usually used for college. SANFORD, FLORIDA – Feb. 26 marked the eighth anniversary of how the world learned of the young Black king Trayvon Martin and the life that was stolen from him. The then 17-year-old teen’s death fell to the hands of the infamous neighborhood watch volunteer, George Zimmerman. It all started when Martin was walking home from the convenience store with an iced tea and candy in his hands. Zimmerman called 911 to report a “suspicious person” in the neighborhood. He was told to not approach the person, but Zimmerman disregarded the instructions, which led to an altercation and gunfire according to neighbors at the time. Zimmerman recognized that he shot Martin in self-defense, he claimed. Through the journey of multiple rallies, protests and call to action for justice to be severed, Zimmerman was found not guilty in July 2013. Despite the heartbreaking decision, Martin’s death spurred a movement and gave rise to the rallying cry “#BlackLivesMatter”, an activist movement that campaigns against violence and systemic racism toward black people and The Trayvon Martin Foundation, a social justice organization.
