HOUSTON — While the city of Houston is stumped and demanding answers as to why embattled Texas Southern University President Austin Lane was placed on paid administrative leave, African American News and Issues has obtained documents which provide a little more insight on the decision. On Jan. 10, AANI was the first newspaper to break online that the TSU Board of Regents placed Lane on leave after sources alerted us there were major movements happening at the university. The BOR handed down the decision while at a retreat at the Houstonian Hotel, days before the university’s spring semester was to begin, and since then, it’s been a “mum’s the word” mystery. A vague explanation about Lane’s leave was released on TSU’s website, in addition to a video allowing audiences to hear the decision being read aloud. Lane spoke out initially, saying he was blindsided by the news, but has since not spoken to the media. Chief Financial Officer Kenneth Huewitt was named interim president, and his first order of business was firing Lane’s right hand man, Special Assistant Wendell Williams. Again, no official explanation released to the public, leaving many to wonder “what’s really going on?” Well, it depends on who you ask. Some say “finally,” there is a board in place that’s ready to protect the integrity of the university and they were, simply, doing what needed to be done. While others say the university, under Lane’s administration, was better than it has been in years and this is nothing more than a “witch hunt” aimed at getting rid of Lane and his executive staff for personal reasons. Which brings us to Williams and his escalating tensions with Board member Wesley Terrell. Since 2018, Williams has filed two grievances against Terrell, one claiming Terrell made inappropriate comments regarding Williams’ wife – allegations which Terrell denies – and the case was still pending when Williams was fired. So, is this part of a vendetta? AANI reached out to Williams for comment. “I am embarrassed for TSU and the affect this is having on our students and our potential growth,” Williams said. When asked if he will pursue legal actions, Williams replied, “I have done nothing wrong and I will take whatever actions are necessary to protect my family and my reputation.”

HOUSTON – George Foreman (born January 10, 1949) is an American former professional boxer who competed between 1969 and 1997. Nicknamed “Big George,” he is a two-time world heavyweight champion and an Olympic gold medalist. Outside of boxing, he is also an author and entrepreneur. Foreman was born in Marshall, Texas, but grew up in Houston’s Fifth Ward community with his six siblings. After an admittedly troubled childhood, he took up amateur boxing and won a gold medal in the heavyweight division at the 1968 Summer Olympics. Having turned professional the next year, he won the world heavyweight title with a second-round knockout of then-undefeated Joe Frazier in 1973. Two successful title defenses were made before Foreman’s first professional loss to Muhammad Ali in “The Rumble in the Jungle” in 1974. Unable to secure another title opportunity, Foreman retired after a loss to Jimmy Young in 1977. Following what he referred to as a religious epiphany, Foreman became an ordained Christian minister. Ten years later he announced a comeback and, in 1994 at age 45, he regained a portion of the heavyweight championship by knocking out 26-year-old Michael Moorer to win the unified WBA, IBF, and lineal titles. Foreman is the oldest living world heavyweight boxing champion in history, and the second oldest in any weight class after Bernard Hopkins (at light heavyweight). He retired in 1997 at the age of 48, with a final record of 76 wins (68 knockouts) and 5 losses. Foreman has been inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame and International Boxing Hall of Fame. Outside boxing, he is a successful entrepreneur and known for his promotion of the George Foreman Grill, which has sold more than 100 million units worldwide. In 1999, he sold the naming rights to the grill for $138 million. As we prepare for the 2020 Dr. MLK holiday, let us tell the truth and shame the devil. When I was a young man, I had the opportunity to be in the presence of Dr. King and his wife-Coretta Scott King. No one ever noticed if Dr. King wore $ 500 Brooks Brothers suits or if Ms. Coretta wore $1,000 St. Laurent dresses. All noticed that she was a grand woman and thought that he ought to be happy if she permitted him to drink her bath water. It is evident that Martin and Coretta developed their inner life while most of us were developing our exterior lives-our reputations. This piece is fundamentally about the grand woman that complimented and completed her husband. In 1956 following the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Dr. King and E D Nixon’s homes were bombed. When Dr. King arrived at home, he checked on the safety of his wife and child. Then he retrieved the shotgun and cartridges and headed for the front porch. Coret-
intuited that this was not the time to be submissive. Coretta knew that a single spark could spark a costly racial war. By this act of defiance by the so-called weaker sex, she would usher in a new America by owning her truth and possessing good judgment. Given the stakes, brandishing the shotgun before hotheads would have inspired Molotov cocktails and an ill-advised insurrection. Many of the police wanted black targets. Instead, inspired by Coretta, Martin told the crowd- If you have weapons, take them home. If you do not have them, please do not seek them. We can not solve this problem through violence. Remember this movement will not stop because God is with it. Martin and Coretta believed in AHIMSAdo not harm any living
On the 2020 commemoration of the King national holiday, let us never forget that without the Coretta Scott King intervention, it is likely that the movement for democratic rights would have stalled or failed. Coretta was easy on the eyes, a great mother and let us not forget that she was a formidable change agent in the tradition of Ida B Delaney, Queen Nzinga and Harriet Tubman. Yes, Women hold up more than half of the world. On this Dr. MLK commemoration on January 20, perhaps a teach-in for our children would be appropriate. A vow for every man to never hit, slap or harm a woman would be in order on this day. All of us should read the Violence against Women Act and support a domestic abuse shelter.

UNITED KINGDOM -- Close your mouths and open the history books -- actually getting a chance to rewrite them yet again -- because Meghan Markle -- the Duchess of Sussex - has just shaken the Royal Family to its core, snatching a red-headed prince and moving him out of the white privilege he’s been accustomed to and giving him the independence he appears to have been fighting for since his dear mother, Princess Diana, left this world. The Black duchess, who’s endured more than her fair share of ‘Royal racism’ since marrying Prince Harry has said enough is enough, and is packing up baby Archie, her beloved husband and is going back to doing what she does best WORKING! “In Britain’s rigid class society, there is still a deep correlation between privilege and race,” University of Southern California Professor Afua Hirsch wrote in the New York Times. “The relatively few people of color — and even fewer if you
count only those who have African heritage — who rise to prominent success and prosperity in Britain are often told we should be ‘grateful’ or told to leave if we don’t like it here.” Well Meghan, who has been a champion for women’s rights since she was a child, is not the “backing down” or “bending over” type. Since her historic royal wedding, the biracial American has endured undeniable racism, including attacks against her newborn son with a BBC 5 presenter calling the child a “chimpanzee” and the Daily Mail saying Meghan had “exotic DNA.” Those insults are not even a chip or tip of the iceberg. It also didn’t help that a reported rift came between Harry and his brother, Prince William, over his union with Meghan. Harry spoke about his relationship with his brother in the ITV documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, saying, “Inevitably stuff happens. But we’re brothers, we’ll always be brothers. We’re certainly on different paths at the moment.” Meghan broke hearts when she opened up, saying “not many people have asked” if she was doing “okay,” leaving many to speculate that she was referring to her in-laws. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex shocked the

world when they released a public statement, without informing Queen Elizabeth beforehand, that they would be stepping back from their roles as senior members of the royal family. Princess Diana also rebelled in her own way against the royal family, with it being well-documented of the isolation and sadness she endured within the palace walls. She, too, was fighting for her independence when she was sadly killed in a car accident while being chased by aggressive paparazzi.
In a world where the millenial mantra is YOLO - You Only Live Once and #LivingYourBestLife, the arguably most famous royal couple in history say they are stepping out on faith and branching out on their own -- if there “really” is a way to do that. While Meghan and Harry will never have that peace they may desire of not being surrounded by security and living under a microscope, they are seeking financial independence, wanting to earn their own money. Harry doesn’t know that world, but Meghan -- an actress
and activist -- is no novice. The queen called Prince Harry, Prince William and their father, Prince Charles, to come together for a meeting at her Sandringham home, and following the 90-minute summit, she released a statement, shocking everyone with how personal it was: “Today my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family. My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family. “Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives. It has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the U.K. These are complex matters for my family to resolve, and there is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days.” The power of a Black woman determined to protect her family and the courage of the man who stands by her side. In Truth And Love

We are a powerful people of many capabilities with that dollar in our hand, but we’re misguided on the impact of that dollar through strategic and decisive planning. Our people call for Black excellence and Black power but some of our own people don’t want us to excel past them or overpower them. There’s a saying that goes, “It be your own people sometimes,” and that statement hits home to a lot of our own. A dollar sits in the register of a store longer than it does sitting in our own community (six hours according to Black men in America) because our people tend to be big spenders and small investors. According to the book, “12 Things The Negro Must Do For Himself” by Nannie Helen Burroughs, The first step that’s mentioned is: “The Negro Must Learn To Put First Things First. The First Things Are Education; Development of Character Traits; A Trade and Home Ownership.” “The Negro puts too much of his earning in clothes, food, show and having what he calls “a good time.” Dr. Kelly Miller said, “the Negro buys what he wants and
begs for what he needs.” Our people work hard for the money they receive on payday, but barely have anything to show for it except for the name brand clothes and jewelry on their body. We’re focused on what depreciates in value (money, cars, clothes, jewelry) then what appreciates (real estate, stocks, equity investments). Why are our people too busy into materials and flashy objects playing the game of going broke looking rich in front of discontent broke people? Are we miseducated? Our black kids spend most of their child years trapped in school learning the curriculum that doesn’t prepare them for life but prepares them for a statewide test they won’t remember the day after. The children graduating out of high school are unaware of the dangers of credit cards, how to write a check, how to save and how to spend their money wisely. Isn’t that the parent’s job to teach their kids about handling money? Yes, in part that is true, but for the number of hours kids spend a week learning new material, should school implement life skills into their curriculum? The point is, our people are still on a downward spiral of being big spenders, and the generations after us are following the same path. When will the negro begin to beg for he wants and buys what he needs?

Millennials want to know that you care. Yes, it does take a village to raise a child, but that is only half of the battle. We also deserve to be equipped with the necessary tools to face all of the challenges that we are faced with today. We DO want the information needed to be outstanding members of our communities. We DO want to be inspired to become something greater than what we see in White textbooks. We DO want to be exposed to the history and culture of our ancestors and learn about both civil rights and politics in this country, but can YOU also acknowledge and embrace OUR passions as young people too? We are your successors and there has to be a responsibility to the next generation to make sure we succeed. Activist H. Claude Hudson said, “The burden of carrying on this struggle today belongs to our young people, who must not feel that all the battles have been won. Though the problems they face may differ in number and kind from those my generation faced, American Negroes must continue to be vig-
ilant, courageous, and persistent in the fight for full freedom and equality. My generation has opened doors with dignity, courage and determination. It I the task of our young people to keep them open and forge ahead.” We must learn to listen and record their history to the best of our ability, to preserve their photographs and heirlooms, and then tell their story to others. By doing this, the knowledge of the history of successful Blacks will instill the pride and commitment in the young adults privileged enough to have access to such information. You’ll find that the young person who constantly makes mistakes will learn to pay much more attention to the successful man who has come out of struggle and passed along what he’s learned. The young woman who wants to make change in her community will find solutions to current problems based on changemakers of the past. Your grandchild will be encouraged to make the best out of their life when they are reassured by the graces of their grandparents who made a living with little to no modern conveniences. With that being said, Millennials and young adults in Generation XYZ, we also have an obligation to uphold the values of our predecessors and take every opportunity to learn. Their fear is that we won’t have the tools needed to keep their legacies alive. So, we have a lot to prove.

HOLLYWOOD – If there was ever any doubt about the continued greatness of Barack and Michelle Obama, here you go. The former president and first lady received their first Oscar nomination for their production company’s debut documentary. “American Factory” is up for the 2020 Academy Awards’ Best Documentary category. The film highlights blue-collar workers in post-industrial Ohio who are employed at a factory that was opened by a Chinese billionaire at a former General Motors plant. The Obamas signed a multi-year deal with Netflix in May 2018 to produce a string of TV series, films and documentaries (both fiction and nonfiction) for the streaming giant. President Obama tweeted, “Glad to see American Factory’s Oscar nod for Best Documentary. It’s the kind of story we don’t see often enough and its exactly what Michelle and I hope to achieve with

Higher Ground. Congrats to the incredible filmmakers and entire team!” The first lady also sent a social media shout out: “So thrilled that Julia Reichert, Steven Bognar, and all of the incredible people behind #AmericanFactory are nominated for the Best Documentary Oscar! We’re so proud of them and amazed by their talent for storytelling.” The historic first couple’s Higher Ground production company is also set to release a children’s show for preschoolers called Listen to Your Vegetables & Eat Your Parents, a narrative film adaptation of the biography Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom and a new series from Nashville creator Callie Khouri called Bloom. SPIKE LEE MAKES CANNES HISTORY
CANNES – A huge congratulations is in order for Spike Lee, who has
just made history, becoming the first African American jury president of the Cannes Film Festival in its 73-year history. Lee will preside over the body of artists who choose which films will receive an award. He succeeds Alejandro G. Iñárritu, whose 2019 jury awarded the Palme d’Or, the highest prize awarded at the French film festival, to Korean director Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite.” The 62-year-old legendary director released a statement which read, in part: “In this life I have lived, my biggest blessings have been when they arrived unexpected, when they happened out of nowhere. When I got the call that I was offered the opportunity to be President of Cannes Jury for 2020, I was shocked, happy, surprised and proud all at the same time.” Lee is no stranger to the festival, with his longstanding relationship dating back to 1986, when “She’s Gotta Have It,” his first feature film, won the Prix de la Jeunesse in the Director’s Fortnight. Lee’s other films, including “Do the Right Thing” (1989), “Jungle Fever” (1991), “Summer of Sam” (1999) and “Ten Minutes Older” (2002) have also received various recognitions from the festival. His latest work, “”BlacKkKlansman” (2018), won the Grand Prix at Cannes, therefore it is quite deserving that Lee is leading the selection process this year. #GlowUp

Shout out to the ‘Doggfather,’ ‘Uncle Snoop,’ ‘Snoop Lion’ or whatever he is calling himself these days for continuing to keep those multiple streams of income flowing in! For a limited time, Dunkin (formerly Dunkin Donuts) is now offering the “Beyond D-O-Double-G” Sandwich, which is a plant-based sausage patty on a glazed donut. The company says it was inspired by Snoop’s love for glazed donuts and plant-based proteins, if you know what we mean. Snoop is definitely on a roll and, like his former mentor Dr. Dre, has come a long way from his “The Chronic” days. Not only is he making hand-over-fist money with Dunkin, he is cleaning up in his VH1 reality show, “Martha and Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party,” in addition to releasing a new cookbook, “From Crook to Cook.”

PRESIDENT OUT CONT’D Many suggest the decision against Lane was made, in large part, after an audit confirmed “improprieties related to the admissions process.” A university employee was fired in November and the BOR continued reviewing enrollment, financial aid, scholarship protocols and standards for all University colleges. AANI has received an internal BOR memo which appears to back up that claim. In what we believe is related to the November issue, item “b” under Audit Committee Recommendations states, “the BOR ascribe no credibility to Lane’s 12/3/19 interview statement that he did not know of any financial improprieties.” Items listed under the “Citations” portion of the document, while not directly stating what Lane is accused of, mentions Lane’s name specifically in items noting what would be considered contractual violations.
First Lady Loren and President Austin Lane have been relieved of their duties at Texas Southern University made effective on Jan. 10.
That portion of the document reads, “F. Termination for Cause. “Cause” as herein used is defined as (1) commission of a felony, (2) commission of a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude that materially impairs Dr. Lane’s ability to discharge his duties hereunder, (3) fraud, (4) embezzlement, (5) theft, or (6) failure to promptly advise and fully report to the Board any matter known by Dr. Lane that tends to bring public disrespect, contempt or ridicule upon the University or (7) any act that creates a material adverse effect on the reputation and/or brand of the University.” Did Lane do anything to hurt the reputation of TSU? It is indisputable that, since assuming leadership in 2016 and becoming the 12th president of Texas’ 2nd largest Historically Black College and University (HBCU), TSU has made major advancements. The annual Maroon and Gray Gala, launched by Lane and his wife, Loren, has become a record-breaking event, raising a million dollars last year, graduation rates have
increased, alumni support is on a high and scholarship money has poured in, but “something is afoot,” as the saying goes. Careful dissection of the publicly posted board meeting videos appears to show BOR members sparring in October about Lane’s direct staff, and procedures about firing, in addition to concerns over expenses linked to an office for Lane’s wife and enrollment numbers. Since the new BOR officers took position late last year, movements against Lane and his staff are causing a stir. Is the new board just “out for blood,” or are they the “cleanup crew?” AANI has been the leader in uncovering information about this matter and we are continuing to dig for answers. HOUSTON FANS GET PLAYED
HOUSTON — It’s not a good time to be a Houston sports fan—perhaps…. From seeing the Houston Texans lead by 24 points before halftime, to end up losing by 20 at the end of the game; then, to hear the Houston Astros fired general manager Jeff Luhnow and manager AJ Hinch for cheating, Houston fans have a lot of tough pills to swallow this week. The Sunday afternoon playoff game against the Texans and Chiefs was a feeling of early jubilation to be up by a huge lead before halftime against a team who averaged 28.2 points in the regular season. Who wouldn’t blame us? We believed that the Texans could take the American Football Conference (AFC) Championship to H-Town, and we had every right to think the way we did. Then, our jubilation slowly trickled down to confusion and frustration after a fake punt called by Texans’ head coach Bill O’Brien went horribly wrong. That ultimately gave the Chiefs the momentum to come back and whoop our behinds the way we should’ve done them. The question now is, does O’Brien still deserve his job after the beatdown we witnessed? The day after, the Major Baseball League slapped the Astros with their punishment, including oneyear suspensions for Luhnow and Hinch, loss of draft picks in 2020 and 2021 and a $5 million fine for using technology to cheat during its World Series-winning 2017 season. An hour after the MLB issued the punishment, Astros owner Jim Crane fired Luhnow and Hinch. Cheaters? Us cheaters?That can’t be true, the ‘Stros gave the city a feeling of pride, joy and healing to millions impacted by Hurricane Harvey’s flooding after we were crowned champions in 2017. To many fans, the historic World Series win feels tainted due to the sign-stealing scandal. For Houston fans, the road to recovery is far, but the end will be near. As for now, it’s best we all take these tough blows one day at a time.

New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker announced on Monday, Jan. 13 that he is dropping out of the Democratic presidential race due to lack of finances. Sen. Cory Booker announced Monday he is dropping out of the Democratic presidential race. Now that both Booker and Sen. Kamala Harris are out, former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick is now the only African American candidate remaining in the Democratic primary. Booker emailed his supporters a statement which read, in part: “Nearly one year ago, I got in the race for president because I believed to my core that the answer to the common pain Americans are feeling right now, the answer to Donald Trump’s hatred and division, is to reignite our spirit of common purpose to take on our biggest challenges and build a more just and fair country for everyone. I’ve always believed that. I still believe that. I’m proud I never compromised my faith in these principles during this campaign to score political points or tear down others.” Booker alerted his staff first, before informing the public. He, like Harris, said he saw no clear path to the finish line, citing a lack of finances. “It was a difficult decision to make,
but I got in this race to win, and I’ve always said I wouldn’t continue if there was no longer a path to victory. Our campaign has reached the point where we need more money to scale up and continue building a campaign that can win — money we don’t have, and money that is harder to raise because I won’t be on the next debate stage and because the urgent business of impeachment will rightly be keeping me in Washington,” Booker said. To my team, supporters, and everyone who gave me a shot—thank you. I am so proud of what we built, and I feel nothing but faith in what we can accomplish together. Booker vows to remain true to what he believes in and wants this nation to move forward. “And maybe I’m stubborn, but I’ll never abandon my faith in what we can accomplish when we join together,” Booker said. “I will carry this fight forward — I just won’t be doing it as a candidate for president this year.” So, what’s next for Booker? Many say he would be a great VP candidate for Democrats. Do you think we will see a Biden-Booker ticket?
