MORE NEEDED HOUSTON – Almost immediately after President Donald Trump’s initiated killing of one of Iran’s top generals, Qassem Soleimani, panic spread across social media from young people fearing they would be forced into the battlefield due to the draft. Hashtags on Black Twitter, including #NoWarinIran, #TrumpsWar and #WorldWarIII showed concerns Black youth felt, thinking that filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) may have put their lives in danger.

Over 150 years ago, Black people left slavery landless and penniless. Our families were fragile, but our compass pointed true north. We had a vision to control our destinies and chart a course of moving from plan to planet. Today, we have millions of young Black men purposing their lives to be shot callers, gangsters, pimps and players. By and large we refuse to marry mama and act as responsible fathers to our children. Millions of our children are looking at the world and saying that, “the sea is so large, and my boat is so small.” No single action that contributes to Black wellbeing is as critical as fathers building and reuniting their families and being the primary role model for their children. Most of the poverty in America is women and children. Many brothers will not acknowledge paternity even after the DNA speaks. In 2020, let us begin to distance ourselves from Maury and Jerry Springer: children are the
reward of life and we must be proactive and defuse the deadbeat bomb. Stable families are the basis of a strong community. Let’s stop kicking the can down the road, we must advocate marrying when the conditions are present. It’s a pulsating beat underneath MAMA TELL ME THE TRUTH- PAPA WAS A ROLLING STONE. The beat is hypnotic but so is the electronic clanging of prison cells closing. It is strong to marry a woman that you love and weak to be a rolling stone and having your home wherever you lay your hat at the end of the day. It is strong to try like hell to keep a promise and honor an oath. It is powerful to NEVER ABANDON YOUR CHILDREN. Mommy and daddy can decide that the road they are traveling is not able to carry them to their destination. Then they can decide to pave a new road. Once children are born, the music changes. When the music changes, the dance must change. Personal selfishness must disappear in favor of the best interest of the children. Children are the reward of life. There is a proverb in Africa that says that when a man or wom-
an is hungry, she feeds her children. Yes, children first. Sage J.T. says that the downfall of too many men is the upkeep of too many women. One of our SANKOFA goals for 2020 is to begin to build generational wealth. Land, homes, gifts through trusts and wills, stocks and bonds must seamlessly pass to Kwame and Pennie. College and trade school should be planned and paid for in advance of future generations. Generational wealth will prevent the detonation of the debt bomb. Malcolm X was prophetic when he said that debt was a modern form of slavery. Most players end up with a nickel and a nail in their pocket because they thought that JT was blowing smoke and selling wolf tickets. Men must say to men - STOP SWITCHING WIVES AND COMPANIONS if you desire generational wealth and the good life.

Being poor is not a crime. Yet, for decades, Harris County detained thousands of people on misdemeanor charges, simply because they couldn’t afford to pay the amount needed to be released on a secured money bail. As a former prosecutor and defense attorney, I applaud the Harris County misdemeanor bail reform settlement because I have personally observed people’s lives be destroyed and families destabilized simply because they couldn’t afford to post a cash bond to be released. Notably, while the bail reform conversation can be applied to misdemeanor and felony level cases, this article is specifically focused on bail in misdemeanor cases. The purpose of bail is to ensure a person returns to court for future hearings. In Texas, bail can be secured or unsecured. Secured bail requires an arrestee to post a cash bond or uses a bondsman, who usually charges a 10% premium to post a
bond. Unsecured bail, also known as a personal recognizance bond, allows an arrestee to be released without posting bond. In 2016, bail reform became a hot topic when plaintiffs, arrested for misdemeanor offenses, filed a lawsuit against Harris County misdemeanor judges and the Sherriff alleging that Harris County’s misdemeanor bail policies were unconstitutional and violated their rights under the equal protection and due process clauses. Specifically, the plaintiffs challenged the County’s policy of being detained prior to trial simply because they were too poor to post bail especially when those who could afford bail were released even if they were a flight risk or posed a danger or threat to the community. Practically speaking, when someone can’t bond out of jail, they risk losing their job, housing, custody of their children and access to any governmental benefits they may receive. In 2016, the Houston Independent School District spent $1.2 million to rename schools that bore the names of Confederate leaders, and replaced them with those of local leaders. Even though there have been many people over the years who’ve sought to eradicate any trace of the Confederacy in Houston - whether it was a statue, street name or public space - the issue of the lack of African American statues in Houston remains. We’ve heard the statement, “We’ve come very far from where we’ve been,” but the credibility of this statement stands on shaky foundations. Progress is being made, but the speed of the progression raises an eyebrow to some with only three monuments of our people being honored, compared to the numerous Confederate public spaces, street names and monuments in the city. Dr. Ben Hall, 2013 Mayoral candidate, attorney and advisory board member of the Martin Luther King Memorial Project-Houston, and his wife, Saundra Hall, paid for the MLK statue to be placed in MacGregor Park. “Mr. Duncantell insisted—no, DEMANDED—that the statue be as authentic to Dr. King’s image and likeness as possible, Hall said. “We were honored to donate the $64,000 needed to ensure Dr. King’s statue would reflect the vision Mr. Duncantell had for the statue— and we think we did just that.” Over the last few years, many have been on a joint mission to remove the bones of racist skeletons from the Lone Star State’s closet...slowly.

Memes using celebrity stunned-face gifs saying things like, “Just realized I have to go to war because FAFSA made me sign up for the Selective Service,” and “Niggas after they hear a knock on their door & remember they filled out the Selective Service on their FAFSA,” flooded timelines, being shared thousands of times. The misinformation was so heavy, some thought they would be notified of them being drafted through text messages. The United States Army chimed in via Twitter with a “Fact Check” to shut those rumors down. “Text messages currently circulating are false and are not official Army communications,” The @USArmy tweeted. Although some memes on social media were comical, the fears were not, as the Selective Service website crashed due to an influx of hits from those trying to learn more. Selective Service officials released a statement via Twitter, letting the youth know they were misinformed and not in any immediate threat of being hauled off unwillingly to war. “The Selective Service System is conducting business as usual. In the event that a national emergency necessitates a draft, Congress and the President would need to pass official legislation to authorize a draft,” the agency tweeted, also acknowledging that the high traffic flooding the site caused it to shut down. FAFSA also jumped in to help ease fears, educating the public on the draft and the requirement of filling out the selective service portion when applying for loans. “We know there are questions on this…registering with Selective Service has been a longstanding requirement to receive federal student aid/a federal job. However, the U.S. military has been all-volunteer since 1973 & Congress would need to pass a new law to institute a draft. There is no priority order for Selective Service based on the FAFSA form (they use a random lottery number and year of birth),” the tweet read. Both the Selective Service and FAFSA released the information about how a military draft works and the need to register for Selective Service for financial aid. Here’s a quick breakdown: THE DRAFT A draft is the mandatory enrollment of individuals into the armed forces. The United States military has been all-volunteer since 1973. But an Act of Congress could still reinstate the draft in case of a national emergency. The Selective Service System is the agency that registers men and is responsible for running a draft.

SMILEY GETS BATCH PLANT PROTEST RICKEY NEW LIFE IN TEXAS HOUSTON – City and State officials spoke in opposition against the pollution causing facility, Soto Ready Mix, in Acres Homes to protest a pending permit for the concrete batch plant. When it comes to the game of business, money talks, bull crap walks and morals remain hanging on the wall because no one uses them at all. The health of the citizens in the rich historic neighborhood has been at risk for three years because of the concrete batch company. There’s an all-out war on urban life in the state of Texas and we must fight back against this war on urban living. “How we do that, is by what we are doing now, standing together in unison,” said Texas Rep. Jarvis Johnson. According to health officials, these companies produce a fine particulate matter that is 30 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair and nearby residents are six times more likely to get asthma because these plants pollute the air. These fine particles produce major health risks like premature death, aggravated asthma attacks, and even premature death. The emissions of a batch plant are well documented to be the silent

Moreover, Soto Ready Mix already began operations across the street from the Highland Park Community Center and directly next to the Williams family’s fence. In 2019 alone, the concrete company was cited 34 times for violations. Donna Williams, Acres Homes resident and the wife of David Williams, expressed her discontent with dealing with the concrete company. “My husband and I noticed an increased amount of dust in the house; we’ve had to dust and vacuum frequently. The last time we opened our vacuum bag, my husband noticed a fine dust that resembled a concrete mixture,” Williams said. Why place an air pol-
luting concrete company in a neighborhood that threatens the lives of many families, elderly, and children? “I have breathing problems among other respiratory issues,” said Lilian Simpson, a resident in the neighborhood who lives close to the property. “ I used to sit outside on the porch and go across the street to talk to the people at the park; but, I haven’t for about a year now because the dust causes me to sneeze constantly without getting a breath in.”

DALLAS – Comedian Rickey Smiley, best known for his prank calls and roles in films like, “Friday After Next,” is spreading the laughter further as he takes over for the “Fly Jock.” The nationally syndicated ‘Rickey Smiley Morning Show,’ debuted on Jan. 6 in markets including Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Detroit, Miami and Orlando, replacing the Tom Joyner Morning Show on more than 70 radio stations across the country. Although many listeners were sad to hear that Joyner would be retiring at the start of the year, the 70-year-old disc jockey said, “I’m happy to see the landscape of Urban AC morning radio continue to expand with Rickey, and I’m proud of the doors [my] show opened.” The retiree said he is confident that Smiley’s activism, love for the community and HBCUs will continue to make his morning show successful. Smiley and Joyner happen to be great friends and colleagues. Both are members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. “Tom’s mentorship has instilled in me valuable wisdom that I will carry with me through this,” Smiley said. TUITION-FREE CHARTER SCHOOL IN SAN ANTONIO SAN ANTONIO – A new Texas charter school aimed at making a huge impact in the quality of education for minority youth is eagerly preparing to open its doors in San Antonio. San Antonio Preparatory Charter School believes that all students should be immersed in their culture, learn about their identity, engage in the community, and build strong relationships with others. The tuition-free public charter school is currently enrolling students in fifth, sixth and seventh grades residing in Judson, Converse, Kirby, Texas and surrounding areas for classes starting August 2020. In its first year, the college prep charter school will enroll approximately 360 students. Each year, SA Prep will expand a grade level until it becomes a fully-enrolled middle and high school, serving grades 5 through 12. At full capacity, the school will accommodate 1,000 middle and high school scholars on a 10-acre open campus. “Our vision is to place all students on a path to college and we take that responsibility very seriously,” said Dejah Behnke, a long-time child advocate and chairwoman of the board for SA Prep. “The pathway to success begins at an early age and it’s absolutely imperative that our future parents know that we’re in this together, and that SA Prep is committed to partnering with them to prepare their
children for life after graduation.” SA Prep’s mission is to provide students with a safe, challenging and supportive learning environment, high-quality instruction and rigorous college prep curriculum that places students on the path to college. “The core purpose for bringing SA Prep to the area is because we felt this community needed us the most.” says Stephanie Hall Powell, Executive Director and Superintendent for SA Prep. “While we would never attempt to take the place of mom or dad, during the school day, SA Prep teachers and staff will address students as though they are their own. It’s only when you put yourself in a parent’s shoes that you can relate to and truly understand how to meet the needs of their child.” SA Prep has identified that only 37% of students in the service area are meeting grade level standards in math, and only 35% are meeting grade level standards in reading. To combat this issue SA Prep anticipates that it will better provide for middle and high school students in the Judson, Converse, and Kirby regions by implementing groundbreaking principles - including a two-teacher model. HOUSTON – Dr. Archie L. Blanson has been named Lone Star College-North Harris Interim President. His new position was made official on Jan. 2. Blanson succeeds Dr. Gerald Fernandez Napoles, who recently accepted a new position as Vice Chancellor/Special Assistant to the Chancellor. Blanson joins LSC-North Harris from his previous role as Vice Chancellor of Student Success for Lone Star College, overseeing admissions, registration, dual credit, disabilities, enrollment management and numerous student services activities and partnerships. Blanson worked closely with LSC-North Harris for more than 20 years, and his commitment to public education runs deep. Prior to joining Lone Star College, Blanson devoted 39 years in education to Aldine ISD, finishing his career as Deputy Superintendent. Blanson graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Southern University, a Master of Arts in Education Administration from Texas Southern University and a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University. His history includes vast experience in teaching and administration. At Aldine ISD, his strong skills in planning, budgeting, compliance and innovative thinking helped the district gain state, national and international recognition. The success Blanson enjoyed at Aldine ISD is evident through his accomplishments and recognitions. He was named the district’s 2003 Boss of the Year, and in 2018, Aldine ISD recognized Blanson by naming its newest facility, the Dr. Archie L. Blanson Career and Technical Education High School, in his honor. His commitment to the community is demonstrated in having held leadership roles with the Aldine Pathfinders, Gulf Coast Area Boy Scout troops, and as president of the Gulf Coast Personnel Association and Gulf Coast M&O Association. Throughout his time in the education field, Blanson has won numerous awards, including the 2005 Trailblazer Award from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s Black Heritage Committee, and the 2005 Outstanding Educator Award from the Dean’s Roundtable at Texas A&M University College of Education and Human Development. Blanson will serve as interim president of LSCNorth Harris until the search for a permanent president is completed later this year.
