HOUSTON – Alma Allen began teaching within the Houston Independent School District at the age of 21. Initially, she taught at Parker Elementary School and Grimes Elementary School. Swiftly advancing and soaring through the ranks of education, she later became Assistant Principal at Foster Elementary School and then served as principal at Peck Elementary School, Windsor Village Vanguard Magnet School and G.B.M. Turner Elementary School. She also worked in Human Resources and Central Administration. After offering nearly four decades of impeccable service to HISD, she retired. Thereafter, she continued her career in education as an Adjunct Professor at both Texas Southern University and Prairie View A&M University; and was also elected to serve on the State Board of Education for over 12 years, where she remains Vice Chair of Public Education for the State of Texas. Legal Double Standards Keep Us in Shackles
I
t’s time we stop lying to ourselves. The lying has gone on much too long and every time the lie is repeated, we are all the worse for it. The lie is that in America, everyone is equal under the law. It’s time to pull back the curtain on this lie, but in order to do so, first we must have an understanding of what “Law” actually is. In its most basic form, law, is a process of authoritative control whereby certain members of a particular community establish and maintain a specific public order.

OPINION & EDITORIAL This definition may seem like a mouthful, but history can help us unpack it. Nazi Germany had anti-Jewish law, the racist regime of South Africa had apartheid laws and the southern states in this country had Jim Crow laws. The Nazis, the Afrikaners and the Southern segregationists all had authoritative control over their respective national and state communities. And with that control, they each ordered their societies in the manner they desired. In each of these instances, it is not difficult to identify those community members who sought to maintain a specific public order, nor is it difficult to identify the “specific order” they sought to maintain. For Blacks in South Africa and the segregated southern United States,
subjugation was the public order where they lived. And in the case of Jews living under Nazi control, it was extermination. For these people, those were the laws. A law need not be just or fair or benign to be the law. Law, like a gun or any other tool, can be used for good or for evil. To disguise the fact that laws can be cruel, unjust and designed to harm certain members of our community, “Blind Justice” was the myth created to foster the notion of a fair legal system in America. But observations in most American courtrooms will instruct us that what passes for justice in this country is not color-blind. Our laws are written with high-sounding words, full of dignity and sensibility but words are not deeds. And as in courtrooms, the long arm of the law, embodied in the
form of law enforcement officers, reaches out into the streets and neighborhoods where we witness the double standards that are applied in enforcing our laws written in lofty language. Even though the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution ended slavery more than 150 years ago, people of Color are still forced to wear the shackles that are the double standards in our country’s legal system. Bigots and racists use our system of laws and law enforcement to police Black and Brown bodies, making it clear to people of Color that we are neither welcome nor expected to exist in White spaces. Ohio maintains a specific public order that allows Whites to walk the streets with automatic rifles unmolested by the police, but justifies gunning down a Black man

who is purchasing a BB rifle in an open carry state. And it finds no fault in a police officer executing a 12-year-old Black boy for playing with a toy gun in a park. This is the law in Ohio. Many cities and states maintain a specific public order that targets people of Color for fines and the confiscation of property in order to fund local and state governments. Ferguson, Mo was proven to use the disproportionate levying of fines on people of Color to fund their municipal activities. That was the law in Ferguson. The state of South Carolina’s civil forfeiture law allows police to confiscate money and property from people merely suspected of having committed a crime. This is often done without a trial, and in some instances, without even an arrest. Cont. aframnews.com
I am told that at the NAACP Banquet on Friday night, October 25, one of the speakers said that all Preachers had sold out, politically. I personally question and challenge this statement because he does not know all the Preachers, and he does not know me. Yes, this speaker sounds like a plantation, handkerchief southern Negro from North Carolina that showed his ignorance and disrespect for those persons of Black churches that helped him get elected. I am not surprised to hear that our local elected officials, our Mayor, Sylvester Turner, our Congresswoman, Sheila Jackson-Lee and our Congressman, Al Green, led the jumping up and giving high fives in support and endorsement to that statement. I am a preacher of 75 years in the pulpit and Pastor of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church for 61 years at 90 years old and I have never sold out to any politician, but I am sold out to Christ Jesus and the King James version of the Holy Bible. If I am guilty of anything, it is giving my life work working my butt off to help Blacks that aspired for public office get elected and have not received a “thank you” and have not done a very good job with the positions they were elected for; the Black people are still in dire need of help. I may not be wrong to state that most Black politicians that have gotten elected and serve in different political offices in government have been bought, at the expense and over the backs of their Black citizens. For most of them were poor or in the small middle class before election and today they are all close to being rich if not millionaires and their constituents and communities still suffering for basic attention. Most Black politicians help other races and groups and ignore their own. You, elected officials, must remember you are not the “Boss” of Preachers, churches or communities, but the representatives. Trump: If it Ain’t White, it Ain’t Right
I
t has been said that misery loves company. Personally, I have never been at a point where I have been so miserable that I wanted to make sure any and everybody else around me was miserable. However, after analyzing the character of Donald Trump, I can’t help but think there may be some truth to this thought. It shouldn’t be a secret to anyone in America that Trump is facing an impeachment inquiry into his administration. Now, a person would think that with everything he has going on in the executive branch, that he should have little time to meddle with immigrants or anybody else for that matter. But this POTUS, wouldn’t be true to his name if he wasn’t still trying to stir up strife and hostility when his own back is literally up against the wall. Earlier this month Telemundo reported, “The Trump administration will deny visas to migrants who cannot prove they will have health insurance

when they become permanent residents or sufficient resources to afford one.” Trump’s proclamation goes into effect on November 3. This tactic is just one of the many vices he is using to further his anti-immigrant agenda, fueled by hate and racism. In times past he suggested: a water-filled border complete with alligators and vicious reptiles; an electrifying wall filled with spikes, or to just shoot migrants in the legs to deter them from gaining access into America. What may seem inhumane to a typical individual, is like a “no-brainer” to POTUS. It is obvious that anybody who ain’t White, ain’t right in his book. Therefore, he sees nothing wrong with his thoughts or actions. He once said, “I have absolute power to shut down the border.” In another effort to detain immigrants, Trump has recently announced “a plan to collect DNA samples from all migrants detained for crossing the border irregularly.” Although Trump tried to pass the witch-hunt off as plot to identify illegals, this ploy has the power to affect law-abiding Hispanic-Americans – through genetic linkage. The actions and thoughts demonstrated by this POTUS shows the whole world his thought pattern – if it ain’t White, it ain’t right! - AANI

remember in High School literature class reading the works of Edgar Allan Poe, famous mystery writer. We rhymed with Annabelle Lee and ad nauseum repeated the Raven. Perhaps we should have
meandering zig zag fashion all the way down to the foundation. I think we can classify this nearly invisible tear as a structural fault. The occupants of the structure were already going mad, really mad. Ignoring and pretending that they didn’t hear the rumblings and minute movements. Doors and windows crooked and out of alignment. Your contractor tapes and floats but the cracks keep coming. Cutting through the chase, the

In the House of Usher, the protagonist buried his twin sister while she was alive. paid more attention to his fiction, short story The House of Usher. Poe tells of his narrator visiting an old buddy at his impressive and imposing mansion. Looking at the mansion for the first time, it appears to be impregnable and built by a stable genius. However, this fortress conceals a tiny crack that runs from the roof of the structure in a winding,
structure collapses and the occupants and house of Usher is swallowed by the lake. Mother Nature and Father time are still disputed but they are undefeated. Your cheating heart tell on you. Fissures and pressures in the walls of the nation are opening nearly everywhere. 99 lies might save you, but the hundredth lie will give you away.

What do DEAD BLACK CHILDREN & MISSING BLACK FATHERS have in Common?

HOUSTON - This year, a group of concerned Black community leaders in Houston hosted a press conference denouncing violence against children. The deaths of four precious little souls ignited a fierce and passionate backlash against crime and violence in our streets. African-Americans are only 13% of the United States population, but commit over 50% of the homicides. We are bleeding to death while Black men kill each other, kill our women and children, and fill our jails and prisons while we tiptoe around in fear and
silence. Everyone is asking the same questions. Why is this happening? What can we do about it? Who is to blame? The truth is that there is enough blame to go around. So I would like to humbly add my voice to the blame game chorus. It’s the elephant in the room. Our dirty little secret that isn’t really a secret. The topic that no one wants to address. Not our Black politicians, Black organizations, Black churches, Black Frats or Sororities. Nobody! I submit that one of the
primary reasons our society (especially the Black community) has lost its moral compass and think it’s okay to murder the innocents is because apparently we think it’s okay that 7 out of 10 Black children are being raised by single Black women. Apparently we think it’s okay that 7 out of 10 Black fathers can plant their seed all over these United States and then walk away as if they hadn’t been anywhere near the neighborhood where their baby was conceived like the invisible man or a ghost in the wind. I think we owe God an
apology for how long we have neglected to speak up and speak out on this critical issue in our community. There appears to be no concern or stigma attached to deserting thousands of Black babies, but all of a sudden we have epic outrage at the collateral damage - dead Black children filling our morgues. Where is the outrage that 7 out of 10 Black children are being born out of wedlock to Black fathers missing in action? Isn’t that too many? Shouldn’t we be alarmed? Am I the only one who thinks there is something inherently wrong with that number? Isn’t there something wrong with the fact that our Black politicians, Black churches, Black civic, Greek and non-profit organizations conduct regularly scheduled meetings, workshops and conferences and NOWHERE on the agenda is a topic that addresses thousands of missing Black fathers? Just business as usual. You don’t have to have a degree in social work to
know that children from single parent households (mostly unwed mothers) are more likely to make more babies out of wedlock, live in poverty, drop out of school, receive public assistance, abuse drugs, commit crimes, go to prison, and the list goes on and on and on. I’m not saying all children raised by single mothers end up poor or in trouble. But poor Black mothers often (not always) mean poor Black families and poor Black communities. 78% of children in families headed by single women have a lower standard of living because they live in poverty. Those numbers should be unacceptable! What happens to a society when the offspring of these broken families grow up? They often rob and maim and massacre the innocent among us and repeat the pattern of their broken families. Before someone starts accusing me of blaming single mothers, forget about it! Black moth-
ers are the heroes in all of this. Most of them are “wonder” women. They do the best they can with what they’ve got without daddies. But the truth is that the absence of Black fathers puts our children at a greater risk of becoming a statistic. If you don’t believe me, Google it. The numbers will break your heart but tears and a broken heart will not fix the problem. Of course we know growing up without a father is possible. It happens everyday. And missing Black fathers are not the only reason we have serious social and economic problems in the Black community. There’s racism, unemployment, drugs, crime, incarceration, etc. But is a community of missing Black fathers the best situation if it contributes in any way to violence against women and children in our community?
