HOUSTON - United States District Judge Vanessa Gilmore was born in October of 1956 in St. Albans, New York. In 1977, Gilmore received her B.A. degree in Textiles and Marketing from Hampton University, and in 1981, she earned her J.D. degree from the University of Houston Law Center. Upon graduation, Gilmore began a 13-year career at the Houston law firm of Vickery, Kilbride, Gilmore & Vickery, where she specialized in Civil Litigation. In 1984, she was also hired as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Houston College of Law. Under then-Texas Governor Ann Richards, Gilmore became the first African-American to be appointed to the Texas Department of Commerce Policy Board. She served as Chairperson of that Board until 1994, when then-President Bill Clinton appointed her as a Federal Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas. At the time, Gilmore was the youngest sitting Federal Judge in the United States. In 2005, she presided over the high-profile Enron Broadband trial. Why Do White Mass Killers Always Seem to Live Another Day?

onnor Betts, the mass shooter in Dayton, Ohio is an anomaly. He is an anomaly not because he murdered nine persons less than 24 hours after Patrick Crusius massacred 20 in El Paso. He is different because he was gunned down by Dayton police. That’s not the usual pattern. The pictures of Crusius being

gently handcuffed and calmly being talked to by arresting officers after his rampage stood in stark and infuriating contrast to the picture of Eric Garner being body slammed to the pavement by NYPD officers and choked to death by an officer. Garner was unarmed, harming no one, no hint of any racial or hate animus, yet he is dead. Crusius was armed to the teeth, committed mass murder, there is an alleged manifesto in which he spewed hate against illegal immigrants, most notably Hispanics, yet he is very much alive. The photos of Garner being violently assaulted by a phalanx of NYPD officers and Crusius’s kid glove treatment by El Paso officers has

been looped on social media with many eyebrows raised. The operative words that are also looped repeatedly in the coverage of the mass murders was that Crusius surrendered “without incident.” Garner unfortunately never had that opportunity, and he’s dead. The El Paso and Dayton mass killings came just days after FBI Director Christopher Wray announced what has been repeatedly well documented. That’s that, most of the acts of domestic terrorism have been committed by young White males and there’s a direct link between their acts and White supremacy groups or at the very least an addiction to White supremacist propaganda tracs,

websites, and literature. In more than a few cases, FBI and other law enforcement agencies had early warnings about some of the mass killers. But they still walked free. That freedom cost lives, another community ripped apart in agony, and the by now all too familiar soul search about how this could happen. Federal and local enforcement officials have been no help in giving an answer. They bemoan the obvious fact that White nationalist groups have surged in the nation and much of the surge has happened right under their noses. Their answer is tantamount to a throw up of the hands when they flatly said they have no real answer to the threat

other than make arrests when they can. There’s no mystery why the impotence in response to the grave threat guys like Crusius pose. He is White, male, educated, and if his rantings are to be believed an America firster. He has the right racial and social pedigree that immunized him from profiling, surveillance, scrutiny, and, judging from his repeated arrest record, vigorous prosecution, conviction and a lengthy stretch behind bars. Countless surveys and studies have repeatedly shown that there’s no such rarified pass from scrutiny for Black, or Hispanic males. Garner is the obvious proof of that. Cont. aframnews.com

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Real Talk: Children Are Our Future

I just wonder if our people noticed ... So many people, if they are playing a hip hop song by the average hip hop artist. If their pastor come knock on the door, they will try to hurry up and turn that song down or off - and for good reason. It’ s already bad enough that the artist isn’t delivering a good message. I like something that I heard in the Malcolm X movie, “ When a man doesn’t have enough intelligence to put a word in a sentence, he will use profanity.” Seems like so many forget where hip hop originated. It was “RAP”! It was the Sugar Hill gang, Heavy D., Whoodini and others that were rapping; spitting real talk lyrics - songs that our people could say, ‘Hey, this is our stuff!’ But not only that, eventually our young, uneducated (no high school diploma) short, fat, ugly, cock-eyed, nappy-headed youth found a way to earn money with this thing called RAP; to the point even if they had a criminal history; even without a father to raise them, these dudes were becoming millionaires. There are a few things strange about country music, Blues and Rap. Most of these artists use bad grammar. But the fans, for the most part, use bad grammar. And at the end of the day our people had something they could call their own and earn good money without committing a crime. Didn’t the Bible warn you that Satan is busy? First, they changed the name from Rap to hip hop. Mostly the CD business is dead. They tried download cards, but they couldn’t figure out how to sell them. Then everyone knows that “children are our future”. So, hip hop artists market lyrics in their messages saying using drugs is cute; that committing crimes is cute and our children follow this “STUPIDITY”! Our children will either end up dead, in prison, poor or on parole. And even if he completes his parole, he will not be able to successfully support a family. Their children will be our children’s parole officer. Our children’s judge, bailiff, attorney, mayor, president .... do I need to continue? All of these positions that WE cannot have because WE have a criminal past, was NOT just a coincidence. But, a MASTER PLAN! Yes, planned by the “MASTER” long before old slavery ended. Yes! We are now in the new slavery. And Yes! This new slavery is far worse than the old slavery. The old slaves knew they were enslaved and had hopes of freedom. Making America Great Again! “And [America] has failed to hear that large segments of White society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice and humanity.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

hen former President Ronald Reagan first expressed the phrase, “Let’s make America great again,” it was during his presidential campaign in 1980. Reagan used the mantra as a rallying cry of hope for Americans to entrust their vote with his administration in an attempt to recover from stagflation. Since then, other presidents and candidates have used it as a type of hype to motivate voters. However, Donald J. Trump has now adopted it and has made it his signature trademark as president. With no regard to the intent of its original origination, he has transformed it on the sly, to serve as a mockery to some Americans. We MUST Understand when Trump talks about MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, he is envisioning an America where Whites are the supreme beings above all other races and cultures. Trump’s MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN is the flawed mindset and expectation that Whites

should be the only ones at the top of America’s economic totem pole. His MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN welcomes and justifies the mass incarceration of minorities around the country. MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN for Donald Trump is inciting and imputing violence and hatred into the hearts of his supporters; supporters, who in return react on his bigot words, tweets and deranged rantings. I can’t help but think about the fact that Donald Trump has been hell-bent on trying to dismantle, overturn and completely destroy the legacy of the first acknowledged Black President of the United States; but the joke has really been on him. This President came into office with a mindset to separate the “Haves” from the “Have Nots”. (The Hell with them all… Build a wall…). But in that, what he doesn’t realize is that while he has deliberately tried to detroy Obama’s legacy, he is leaving a terrible legacy of his own. On more than one occasion, this president held presidential rallies which incited violence and protests from Americans. On numerous occasions he has allowed his racist mouthpiece to run rampant with insults degrading American citizens from foreign countries. But all of that has been in the name of… MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! So, when I turned on the news last week and saw the various shootings across the country, I said

to myself, ‘I’m sure this President is proud.’ Especially once 21-year-old, Patrick Crusius left 22 people dead and injured over two dozen people at a Walmart in El Paso.

Patrick Crusius released a four-page manifesto condoning the thoughts and ideas of the Commander-in-Chief, just before opening fire in an El Paso, Walmart.

Just a little under an hour before the mass shooting, Crusius, a native of Allen, released a racist, anti-immigrant four-page manifesto. In it, he makes several references to the ideas and sentiments expressed by Trump. He admits his strong dislike for Hispanic and Latino immigrants, as well as racial inbreeding. According to Brian Todd of CNN, Crusius’ manifesto, “warns of a ‘Hispanic invasion’ and says Democrats are using ‘open borders’ and ‘free healthcare for illegals’ to attract new voters.” We MUST Understand the things that are being witnessed now is only the introduction to the type of folly Trump will leave in his wake. But, the truth is, the worst is yet to come. Because while Donald Trump may be subtle in his thinking and delivery, truth is there are scores of those who think just like him. HCC’s Black Girls Code

HOUSTON - The Houston Community College (HCC) Northeast Campus recently hosted girls, ages 13 to 17, from across Houston for its first-ever Black Girls Code (BGC) two-week camp. The group of 25 learned to code in HCC’s stateof-the-art computer labs, participating in a variety of activities designed to expose and encourage them to pursue careers in technology. They even created their own mobile app to identify and solve problems within their communities. The teens worked collaboratively on projects designed to increase their understanding of software applications and programming. For most of the students, it was their first experience working with coding technology and on a project that could be applicable to their daily lives. The college environment further exposed the students to opportunities and pathways to multiple

careers. “We are so proud of the girls and their parents for participating in the first summer camp and excited to see the impact of Black Girls Code in Houston,” said Ravi Brahmbhatt, director of HCC’s Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship. “This camp reached the mark of over 475 girls who have taken part in BGC’s Houston programming since the first workshop in February 2018.” Explaining that HCC has played an integral role in BGC establishing a Houston chapter, Brahmbhatt said the partnership is to increase the pipeline of girls of color pursuing careers in technology. For more than a year, HCC provided eight oneday workshops across the college service area, but this is its first extended two-week summer camp. HCC Northeast President, Dr. Monique Umphrey, has a specific interest in the partnership because of her experience working in the information technolo-

gy career field. “We are proud to host the Black Girls Code summer camp at HCC Northeast because it is always exciting to see young people enjoying Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics fun,” said Umphrey. STEM studies are offered throughout HCC. In addition to coding, the camp offered mentorship, interactive exercises, and field trips. The camp culminated with a presentation of apps developed by the participants and recognition for their projects and accomplishments. Umphrey congratulated and encouraged the students as they considered future career paths. “Having that foundational skill in software development changed my life; it opened up new pathways and allowed me to travel globally, leading software development teams,” Umphrey shared. “It empowered me, not just as a woman, but also as a Black woman.” She added that, as the world has changed, technology has changed the way we live, work and play. “Even if you don’t decide to be a technologist, the skills that you have incorporated over this camp are invaluable,” Umphrey said. Many of the participants were able to attend the summer camp with scholarships provided by AT&T. HCC plans to continue the partnership with BGC and support more workshops and camps in the future. HOUSTON - American society is in a state of Presidential moral-leadership-confusion and freefall, because of the spiritual breakdown of nuclear family units. Moreover, the basic moral foundation of America’s democratic Constitutional institutional structure is threatened by the love of power, money and sex (PMS). As a result, America has been exposed to the world as a White Privilege oriented society by openly embracing the ungodly-immoral-racist-leadership mentality of Donald J. Trump. No doubt about it, Donald J. Trump is who America is; otherwise he would not be the 45th President of the USA. Thus, the Russians may have desired to have an undercover agent as President; but, we as Americans subliminally participated in the Russian plot to make Trump a Conrad of the Russian government, because of our ungodliness and our love of money. Living from the outside

to the inside produces leadership-mentality-instability and above all, destroys democratic institutional structures. Hence, the individuals that stand accused of the betrayal of America’s democratic values are the Christian Right Evangelicals, GOP-Trump-Loyalists and other confused voters of all stripes and colors. Lest, we forget, “God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.” - Psalm 7:11 America, know this and take heed: “The house of the wicked shall be overthrown: but the tabernacle of the upright shall flourish.” - Proverbs 14: 11 Thus, those who are destined to repeat the mistake (s) of the past, and re-elect Trump, know this: “Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.” - 1 Timothy 5:22 Christian Right Evangelicals, you have heard of Him; therefore, declare that: “God is LIGHT, and in him is no darkness at all. If

we say that we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” - 1 John 1: 5-7 Christian Right Evangelicals, as James Brown would emphatically declare, please, please, please cease: “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.” -Romans 1:22 Thus, too much of thinking one’s self to be wise is done over too many Christian pulpits; especially Christian Right Evangelical pulpits, because: “Fools make a mock of sin: but among the righteous there is favour.” Proverbs 14:9 Christian Right Evangelicals and the GOP have willingly participated in not just a spiritual-moral-failure of Presidential leadership, but a spiritual-moral-failure of who we say we are constitutionally. The foundation of every society (culture) is the nuclear family unit. So goes family units, so goes the world. Lest we forget, God is the designer of family, and family units are where God’s love should dwell. This is why God declared, “it is not good that man should be alone; I will make a help meet for him.” - Genesis 2:24 Hence, anytime a man is alone; invariably he will turn inward to serve his own ego interests, and Edge God Out (EGO). Thus, the Bible declares: “Whoso findedth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favor of the Lord.” Cont. aframnews.com
