aying that Donald Trump is a great president who is the victim of a secret plot of people who are conspiring against him, in my mind this is, “Fake News” based on a “Fake conspiracy” being promoted by “Fake People”, who are mostly racist and just want to promote their divisive ideology. Whether you are willing to admit it or not and even if you are not a person who is involved in American politics in any way, it is obvious that Trump has divided and changed our nation in a very destructive way. You have seen his disrespect for NFL Black players, NBA Black players, Black entertainers, Hillary Clinton, Black governmental people, women, immigrants, poor Whites and millions of other people on this planet. Although we do have a segment of people (mostly undercover racists’) who do believe Trump is making America great
again, the majority of Americans know our American Democracy is under threat and that it is very intimidating to the average American citizen, especially African-Americans. A standing example is, that you have only to look at how many Black people have been killed by police officers and falsely arrested by them since Trump has been in office. In our state of Texas, everybody has seen radical changes in attitudes against Black people, Brown people (immigrants)and others including White folks who don’t openly support Trump. White democrats are viewed as enemies of Trump and his supporters by the “Trump Conspiracy” people. In reality, this attitude makes those who still believe electing Trump was for the betterment of America’s greatness, look stupid. We are seeing more confederate flags and racist symbols of hate in this state since Trump became president. As I write this article, I just saw on the news where the school board of Tyler, just voted to keep the name of Confederate Civil War General Robert E. Lee’s name on their high school. I attended Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, located in the vicinty of Tyler. It just so
happens that, I know the Black people that don’t like Robert E. Lee’s name on the high school. Also in East Texas in Crockett, we recently have had a lot of fires in our Black community which are very suspicious. No one has been arrested or questioned about who is setting these fires. As a long time citizens of Crockett, I know for a fact someone would have been arrested and seriously investigated if those fires would have happened in the White communities of Crockett. Someone asked me “What if the person or persons committing these fires is an African-American or another minority?” My answer to that person was, “Even if the criminals are Black or minority, the fact that the victims of these crimes are Black people and their communities are suffering, that makes this a racial crime.” The history of Texas speaks volumes to the racist attacks on Black people and their communities, dating all the way back to the slavery era. That isn’t a conspiracy, but, a fact. The Crockett Fire Department, Fire Chief, Jason Frizzell and Fire Marshal Chris Jimenez have posted this information across Crockett. “The Crockett Fire Depart-
ment has experienced a number of structure fires over the past few months on Cottonwood Street and Sycamore Street. The Crockett Fire Marshal’s office along with the State Fire Marshal’s office needs the public’s help in solving these fires and preventing any further property loss. The Crockett Fire Marshal’s office is offering a $1,000 reward and the State Fire Marshal’s office is offering a $1,000 reward for any information which leads to an arrest and conviction. Please contact the Crockett Fire Marshall at 936-544-5553 or the State Fire Marshal at 1-877-434-7345 with any information.” Crockett businessman Gary Griffin, an African-American owner of Black Smoke Trucking, LLC, has also offered a $l,000 reward of his own money as a reward for catching the culprits of these crimes. Griffin said, “All of the people of Crockett of all colors and races need to come together and find out who is committing these crimes.” At the end of the day “We the People” must stand up, because we can’t afford to let Trump’s Conspiracy Theory People dictate their modern version of Jim Crow Laws. belief that we are not brothers, but instead, competitors. We all have experienced, “that one friend”, who will go out their way to let you know where they’re employed, (mostly in public through pointless work-related references); who chooses to surround themselves with worshippers to validate their importance and who feels like what they’re saying is the most important point in the conversation. Their negative influence inspires everything
around them to decay from a beautifully blooming personality to a shriving weed, consumed with insecurities and self-doubt. Coming from a college environment like Texas Southern, I witness the beauty and tragedy of our community play as if it were within the great theatres of ancient Rome; the hubris of our Black protagonist engulfs his very essence when people value the prefix of “Dr.” or “professor” more than the achievements accomplished by that very same individual.
But, no one wants to address this issue. We pass it off as a socially acceptable means of character because it embodies what we’ve been trained to believe to be the attitude of success within our community. But, this is an archaic practice that has played a detrimental part in the decomposition of the Black community; one in which needs to be obliterated. And through the ashes of our self-entitled egos will a new social normality of accountability and unity rise like the phoenix; blazing a trail
of excellence that will light the path of our advance to a brighter future. Let our humility bridge the gaps within ourselves and let unity be the tools to architect our destiny from an ambitious idea to a monumental shift in the paradigm of our influential Black culture. Let us adopt the concept of community first, and set aside all of our pride to help each other build upon the legacy of Blactivity. Only when we put WE before ME, will we ever have a chance to succeed. - AANI

Bulletproof Backpacks - Really??? “At the end of the day, the goals are simple: safety and security.” - Jodi Rell
I
t’s that time again! It seems like yesterday the school bells were ringing for dismissal of the last day of class. Now it’s time for the school year to begin. As a teacher myself, it’s always an exciting time to start a new school year. Yes, teachers and students dread leaving the break, but it’s a new start, a fresh beginning. Even though the new calendar year starts in January, teachers have two new starts. I think the school year for teachers is bigger than the new year in January. Parents are now getting their children ready for the school year by shopping for new clothes and school supplies. One thing that may be on their list is a new backpack. Recently, a bulletproof backpack has been advertised for students to use. It has been said, this backpack may help protect students if a school shooting was to occur. Has it really come to this? How did we get here? Sadly, it seems as if school shootings are becoming a norm. At one point it was like they were occurring on a monthly basis. I recently read that as of May 2018, there have been 23 school shootings where someone was killed or even hurt. That averaged out to almost one shooting per week. In Texas alone, there were two school shootings. One of those shootings occurred in
Italy, and then many of you are familiar with the Santa Fe High School shooting that occurred right before the summer break. These unfortunate events have led to the creation of bulletproof backpacks. Students should be able to go to school in peace and not worry about if someone is going to shoot up the school. So, this brings me to the question, what security measures are schools putting in place to ensure the safety of their students? I think we have gotten to a point where safety has to be the number one priority. Students and staff need to feel safe. Many people have advocated for teachers to be able to carry guns on campus, but, I don’t think more guns is the answer to the problem. The answer is to increase school security. No matter how much money it costs, this should be school districts’ main focus. Placing money into security is an investment that could potentially save the lives of many. I believe all schools should have metal detectors. This will help identify weapons or other items students may try to bring in. Additionally, I believe one of the answers is an increase in police presence. Police should be helping with metal detectors and even patrolling the halls throughout the day. Even though many people are not happy with law enforcement, I believe that they are still needed to serve and protect. I respect law enforcement, and live by the fact that not all police officers are bad. I also believe that students should carry clear as opposed to mesh backpacks. Utilizing clear backpacks gives teachers a clear view of everything in the student’s bag. With mesh backpacks, I think the view is obstructed. Continue reading online www.aframnews.com

or years, we Africans living in America have been responsible for resurrecting and turning things around. Yet, when it comes down to the “nitty gritty”, we are often the most overlooked and uncredited race of people in the nation. Although many people choose to criticize the efforts of President Barack Obama, the truth is America was a better country when he left office than it was when he first took office; and it was certainly in a better shape when he left than what it is now. But as we well know, he was able to make great strides in this country even in the face of serious opposition. But, his story is the same story of many African-Americans in leadership or in office. No matter how many advancements an African-American makes, there will always be those who find fault in some capacity. Let’s take for instance, the Interim Superintendent of the Houston Independent School District, Dr. Grenita Lathan. This woman has been turning everything in the District around. She is straightening things up piece by piece. I remember when one of the former Superintendents first brought her to Texas. It was under the leadership of Dr. Terry Grier, when Dr. Lathan was first introduced to the District. She came in the door turning schools around and getting them out of
the “Improvement Required” label. That, within itself is enough to speak volumes about the caliber of woman we have leading our children. So why would there be those amongst us who want to go out and get someone else; in which case you don’t even know what you may or may not be getting in them? Well, some people may be in denial but I don’t mind writing it like I see it. It all has to do with race. And I’m not talking about running either. I am referring to race in the way Dr. King describes, a person being judged by the content of their character, opposed to the color of their skin. Common sense would suggest to me that - well wait a minute.... Like my wife always says, “Sense ain’t common if everybody ain’t got it.” So I guess I can’t use that term here. But, I have always been the one to use plain ole logic and evidence. It does not take a genius to see the proof is in the pudding with what we have in Dr. Lathan. Don’t take my word for it, certainly a person would believe an entity as reputable as the Texas Education Agency. Recently, the Houston Independent School District Press Office reported in an article entitled, “HISD meets state accountability standard,” that the District’s “Improvement Required” rating has declined to a low number. The release indicated TEA’s rating of “91 percent of HISD schools (251 out of 275 rated campuses) earned a ‘Met Standard’ rating for the 2017-2018 school year.” This achievement awarded the District with an overall B rating under Texas’ new school accountability system. The report continued to share that the “Improvement Require-
ment” label has decreased from a total of 58 schools to 7 having the designation, within three years. The seven remaining campuses are in their first-year of receiving the “IR” label; and “17 additional schools were ‘Not Rated’ due to meeting the state’s criteria for the Hurricane Harvey waiver,” according the district’s Press Office. Furthermore, the report confirms, “Of the 243 HISD schools that are eligible for distinction designations, 152 campuses earned at least one distinction designation for outstanding achievement in English/reading, math, science, or social studies; outstanding academic growth; outstanding performance in closing student achievement gaps; or, outstanding academic performance in attainment of postsecondary readiness.” Finally, it stated, “This is the first year that Texas has rated school districts using the new accountability system, which considers the following factors (also known as “domains”) for measuring the academic performance of districts and campuses: student achievement, school progress and closing performance gaps. If not for a new provision introduced into the TEA’s final 2018 Accountability Manual, HISD would have two fewer “IR” campuses, and two fewer campuses labeled “Not Rated” under the Hurricane Harvey Provision.” I would have to say that is a pretty impressive turnaround. Concluding, I would like to echo the words of Dr. Mae Jemison who said, “Never be limited by other people’s limited imaginations.” Therefore, as publisher of African-American News & Issues, congratulations on a job well done and know that you are not alone on this journey. - AANI

The attack on Houston Independent Interim Superintendent, Dr. Grenita Lathan is cold and calculated. The racism that is being shown by School Board trustees has similar characteristics of Donald Trump. The trustees responsible are Elizabeth Santos, Diana Davlia, Anne Sung, Holly Maria Flynn Vilaseca, Parents Ben and Sarah Becker, Zeph Capo and Sergio Lira. I call them The New Education Klan. For some strange reason Dr. Lathan is not good enough to be the permanent Superintendent of HISD, according to these people. If James Brown was the hardest working man in show business, I’ll be dam if Lathan isn’t the hardest working woman in education! Lets do a fact check on Dr. Lathan. She holds a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina A&T University, a master’s degree in business education from the University of North Carolina, and a doctoral from Southern Illinois University. She started teaching in 1991 and she has been an assistant principal and principal. She was an Elementary Chief Improvement Officer in the San Diego Unified School District in 2008 and Deputy Superintendent the following year. Dr. Lathan also served at Superintendent of Peoria Public Schools in 2010. While in HISD she served as Chief School Officer over

elementary transformation in 2015 - 2016. To be exact, she was able to lead 28 schools out of “Improvement Required” status in one year. She served as HISD Chief Academic Officer in 2016 2017 until being named interim Superintendent in March. So, a person that has been in charge of some of the most undeserved and academically challenged schools in the country is not qualified to be Superintendent of the dis-

Yet Trustee Santos, as well as, the other members in the New Education Klan have never once asked for step raises in any budget meeting in the past seven months. As I see it, there has been no person more decorated and accomplished to hold the highest seat in HISD. Abe Sevadra was a failure. Terry Grier was an utter failure and Carranza was a runner. But, never once did board members attack them in the manner they have Dr. Lathan. For the past two weeks The New Education Klan has lined up to attack Dr. Lathan from every angle. I’ll now break down the New edu-

Trustee Davlia it is alleged that she should not even be a board member. The allegations are simple. She doesn’t live in her district. It’s alleged that she lives in the Woodlands. And she and her husband Able only use the address, the TRAP HOUSE IN HER DISTRICT, as a means to be able to run in elections
in the city of Houston. Is this the same trustee that was caught falsifying signatures this spring, in order to run for a JP position in Harris County? She was also disqualified from the race. This is the same trustee that resigned her position in HISD, due to allege corruption in the past and was required by the courts to stay away from politics for five years. This is the same trustee that allegedly came back to HISD with same pay for play schemes which got her removed before. It’s now alleged that she and the husband along with one of their consultants are trying to squeeze hard working vendors out of $10,000.00 a month to help secure or keep current contracts with HISD. I think Harris County and the FBI should open an investigation in regards to these allegations. Lets talk Sergio Lira. Is this the same trustee that secured my help during the runoff election in 2017? The reason for the help was because ALLEGEDLY JESSIE RODRIGUEZ was terrorizing his pole workers. acter. Is this the same Anne Sung that was secretly emailing Deputy TEA Commissioner AJ Crabill to inquire about turning Worthing into a charter? This is also the same Anne Sung that in 2017, voted down teacher pay raises. I was actually in the meeting when it happened. Anne Sung uses the school board meetings as a forum to undermine Dr. Lathan. The idiotic questions she ask are questions that could be answered by, sending emails to the departments in question before board meetings. I expect more from a supposedly Harvard graduate. Maybe Sung’s attacks are because she is still mad at Terry Grier for removing her as a teacher from Sam Houston when he was Superintendent. Also, Sung sits on an Ad Hoc Committee for Special Education. She has never once brought forth any recommendations to help Special Ed. The minutes from those meetings will reflect that. She is one half of what I call THE FLINTSTONES SISTERS. The other half of the FLINTSTONES SISTERS is Holly Maria. She is by far the weakest board member of them all. Her mental capacity should be questioned at all time. She votes exactly like Sung and ask the same questions as Sung. People didn’t vote her in to be a follower. She is a disgrace to the seat that was held by Greg Myers Next up, the Becker’s are a set of Caucasian parents that seem very interested in Black

Education. Yet for some reason they have never volunteered to help Black students in any Black schools. The word out in the community, is they allegedly despise Lathan and will do anything to get her out. Zeph Capo is a board member with HCC and President of The Houston Federation of Teachers Union. Is this the same Capo That never once talked about teacher step raises for the past seven months; but, does a press conference with Santos and Lira attacking Lathan for hiding information? Union members deserve better. His representation of his membership is suspect. This is the same Capo that personally called me at 7:43 am on Aug. 3rd, to question me about why did I say this during one of my live videos on Face book? It’s simple, because it’s the truth! It’s also alleged that Capo was removed from his position on the national union for handling a Black union member in a racist manner. The word on the street allegedly is these people want another Latino superintendent at any cost. Even if he’s not qualified to do the job. Any attempt to do a superintendent search under false pretenses will not fair well in the HISD community. Dr. Lathan record speaks for itself. So, instead of dwelling on fake bad accusations of this good lady, dwell on her good. Like decreasing support personnel in Hattie Mae White by 2%. Promoting people to higher positions
that are truly qualified to help our children. Publicize the fact that not one principal was against her to not get the permanent job. And lastly, accept the fact she wont play ball like the good ole’ boys of the past. She has integrity and honor. She has a heart for children. And those are some qualities it takes to be a good Superintendent. Stop being racist and looking utterly stupid in your attacks on Lathan. I for one know, the Black community of HISD can see through the smoke screen. Give her the respect she deserves. The same respect you gave to Terry Grier and Carranza. Or, prepare for an educational racial revolution. As I always say, watch these people. Undercover racism is far worst than open racism. Other than Lathan being a woman, and being Black, why would these suspect board members/community members not want her.? Simple. She is Black, proud and that dam good. I’m sorry your former Latino Supers were garbage. But remember who picked them. The same people that are more worried about vendor contracts than student achievement. The same people that if TEA doesn’t boot them out will be voted out for the conspiracy to destroy the hardest working Black woman in public education. In life your reputation shall be judged for but one day; but, your character shall be judged for a lifetime. The same character, that is in question by The New Education Klan.

Hustling: A More Effective Way of Reaching Potential Voters
By Arielle Johnson Last weekend, while reviewing Councilman Casey Thomas’ Facebook page, we came across a post about a texting event, being held at five locations within the Dallas-Fort-Worth Metroplex. Three offices in Dallas, one in Mesquite and one in Irving. The announcement on Councilman Thomas’ page read - “This is the easiest way to volunteer to help the Blue Wave in Texas. Text with us! If you can’t do this one, don’t complain in November.” The organizers recommended anyone with an interest in attending the 2-hour texting blitz, download the “Hustle” app, then register online with their office of choice. There was a reminder for everyone to bring their charger and a promise of a “fun time”. We headed to the Office of Democratic Unity North located at 8499 Greenville Ave., Suite 205, Dallas, dressed in very casual clothing, with hopes of being prepared for whatever may have been requested of us. Upon entering the front door, there was a registration table facing us, where seasoned volunteers helped to get us newbies signed in and provided simple instructions on how to use the “Hustle” app. Well... now it was time for hustling.
When I walked into the Megatextravagana Room, I noticed a huge meeting table with approximately 9 people lazily seated around the table, with their heads slightly bent and fingers gliding across the dial pads on their mobile phones. I chose to sit outside this room with three other women who were also waiting on instructions on how to get started
people whose names appeared as soon as their phone numbers appeared on the phone screen. Automatically, a campaigning text pops up with your name which reads as follows: “Hello fellow Democrat. My name is Arielle and I am a Democratic volunteer. We are texting Dallas County Voters about the November election. Can we count on you to vote for

However, for those who indicated, “Heck yeah, I’m onboard,” our follow up message to them was a request asking if they would mind displaying a yard sign on their front lawn in support of one of the Democratic Party candidates.

with the workflows. Shortly after I took a seat, a young lady by the name of Nisa Ortiz entered the room and showed us how to open our workflow. Workflows are generated from huge lists of active Democrats. Each texter started with a list of 200
your Democratic candidates?” As you can expect, after sending out so many messages, the responses started to come back. Occasionally, we would receive one which clearly indicated we had not reached the intended party. One
A majority of the people we made contact with agreed to do so, while others indicated insane, crazy, neighborhood association rules, which restricted members from supporting ANY of the candidates. And of course, for those who live in apartments,
the yard sign is not an option. Some of you reading this article may be wondering what happens to the messages if you have to leave, or sign out of the app. Well...they just get assigned to someone else. The app indicates the contact was previously worked and suggests you re-introduce yourself as someone who works on campaigns as a volunteer with the person who initially contacted them. After sending out approximately 700 texts, it was time to split, but not before briefly interviewing Nisa Ortiz, an office associate about when they started using the “Hustle” app and how it compares to traditional ways of contacting constituents. This is what she shared with us - “We came to the conclusion, texting people is a lot easier than calling them. A lot of people don’t want to talk on the phone and they don’t want to answer weird numbers, but, they will text you back. We have been using the Hustle app for about two months. Initially, we were attempting to reach out to constituents by phone, but it was a huge failure.“ Remember to get out and vote in November, and if there is anyway you can become actively involved in your voting district, we encourage you to go ahead and volunteer. - AANI

Building Bridges
By Chelsea Davis-Bibb, M.Ed. “I think the great investment in law enforcement we can do is to connect with the community.” -Constable Alan Rosen Constable Alan Rosen and his Precinct One team held their 5th Annual Building Bridges between Law Enforcement and the Community event at Eisenhower High School in Aldine Independent School District. In today’s society, some people still have a negative perspective when it comes to law enforcement. This event was to help bridge the gap between the community and law enforcement. Often times, many people forget that officers are normal people and deal with normal issues like everyone else, and events like these are good because the community gets a chance to see officers outside of their work environment. It is important for the community to know that we can trust those who were put in place to serve and protect. At this event, there was a basketball tournament, free food, school supplies, entertainment, vendors and college representatives. In addition, kids were able to get their haircut and nails done for the first day of school. More importantly, kids were able to have a positive encounter with law enforcement. In order to encourage the people to interact with the officers who were present, there was a photo challenge. The challenge was to take as many selfies as they could, with as many deputy constables as possible. Whoever had the most selfies would win. Constable Rosen was very excited with how the event turned out. He wanted kids and adults to know “they can trust law en-

forcement and when they need help, they have a friend in law enforcement.” He further expressed, “Today was about fostering those relationships and breaking down any barriers that were there, and making sure that people feel comfortable.” He was also impressed and was excited about the interactions that took place between the community and law enforcement stating, “There was a complete diverse group of people here today and everyone interacted beautifully.” It is very important to him that the community feels safe and can trust law enforcement. He expressed that sometimes it’s just a trust issue. “You have to connect with the community… in some instances it’s just trustworthy. So I focus on building and fostering the relationships of the community that may have some distrust. We’re going to continue to build bridges.” Erica Davis-Stribling, Community Outreach Director for Precinct One, works very hard with her team in order to create events like these. She expressed, “I get emotional thinking about the people who trust me to build their relationship with our law enforcement agency. It’s hard, but, I will try and make positive events to create these relationships.” Erica takes great pride in serving her community and will continue to work tirelessly doing so. This event is one of many that takes place throughout the year to continue building relationships. The next event is their Annual Teen Summit, which will take place at Eisenhower High School on November 10th. There, the community will be able to participate in a conversation about the issues going on around the world and in the community. - AANI

I am honored and humbled to serve as your Superintendent of Schools as we prepare to educate and uplift the children of our community. Improving the academic achievement of all students in Aldine ISD will serve as the primary focus of my work. In order for Aldine ISD to go from Good to Great, the same focus must be reflected on the part of all staff members, our parents and the Aldine community In my short time in Aldine, I have been impressed with how engaged the Aldine community and our parents are with the school district. Community and parental engagement are so important to a school district’s success and my plan is to build on what has been built over the years with these two crucial groups. I wholeheartedly appreciate the encouragement and insight that many of you have provided since my appointment in April. I am energized by the interest, spirit of support, and

partnerships already extended by those in and throughout the Aldine community. The issue of educating and uplifting the children of Aldine ISD is not a question of resources as it is a question of determination. Yes, we can always benefit from having “more.� However, “more� will not suffice if we don’t have “enough� people who care, love, believe, and work fervently to educate and make a difference in the lives of ALL of our students. As your superintendent, I have high expectations for myself, our administrators, our teachers, our staff and our students. A quality education does not come easy. In my commitment to Aldine ISD, I expect our district and campus leaders to provide the leadership necessary to increase student achievement. I expect our teachers and instructional staff to ensure all students are provided access to a quality education through rigorous yet engaging instruction. I expect our police, transportation, maintenance, health services, child nutrition, and custodial staff to safeguard our students’ basic needs to feel nourished, healthy, safe, secure, protected, and loved. I also expect our students to work hard to reach their full potential and to make responsible decisions.The 2018-19 school year will be one of change as our grade reconfiguration plan goes into effect. Our new grade levels will be: EC/PK/K; elementary – 1st-5th grade; and

middle school – 6th-8th grade. The high schools will remain the same with ninth grade campuses and 10th12th grade. We believe the reconfiguration changes will reduce the number of transitions between grade levels. We will also be introducing new boundaries across the district and we hope to make the transition to our new boundaries as seamless as possible. We know we might encounter some glitches along the way, and we will handle them. Please be patient with us as we embark on this new endeavor. The 2018-19 school year will see us open six new schools and new facilities for two of our oldest campuses, Francis and Johnson elementary schools. When school begins on Aug. 20, we will open two new EC/Pre-K/K schools (Merlin Griggs, Sr. EC/ Pre-K/K at 801 Regional Park Dr. and Lou Vardeman EC/PreK/K at 3302 Connorvale Rd), three new middle schools (Steve Mead Middle School at 3500 Lauder Rd., Dr. Viola M. Garcia Middle School at 11000 Rosslyn Rd. and Marine Jones Middle School at 20155 Townsen Blvd.), and one career and technical education high school (Dr. Archie Blanson Career and Technical Education High School at 311 West Rd.). Francis Elementary’s new home will be located at 6525 Greens Rd. and Johnson Elementary’s new home will be located at 13901 Homestead Rd. All of the new facilities are beautiful buildings and I hope you will take time to visit them during the school year. I hope you are as excited about the 2018-19 school year as I am.
