Stephen A. Smith’s Failed Attempt at Political Commentary Manhood, Race & Culture By Dr. James Thomas Jones III
O
ne of the most discussed issues in African-American political circles is a question regarding if Blacks should be as wedded to the Democratic Party as they have been for the past halfcentury. The latest public personality to address this situation is ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith. It would be gross understatement to posit that Smith fails miserably at this attempt to enter into the highly complex and contentious realm of American racial politics. Smith attempted to navigate the rocky waters of American politics and today we find his bruised and battered carcass lifeless and washed ashore. Smith, who apparently has no real comprehension of the storied history of African-American voting patterns sought to inject what he naively believes is an avant-garde idea into the contemptuous matter of American voting patterns. According to the ESPN commentator, it is time for African-Americans to divorce themselves from the Democratic Party in an unprecedented manner. Smith related to an attentive university audience that he had a ‘dream’ like the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and dreamed “for one election, just one, every Black person in America vote Republican....” Of course Smith is seeking to interject shocking commentary that calls into question the voting patterns of his African-American ancestors who began their gravitation toward

the Democratic Party with the election of Franklin Delano Roosevelt during the Great Depression, a process that was completed with the election of John F. Kennedy in 1960. According to the Roper Center’s Public Opinion Archives, AfricanAmericans have been a reliable voting bloc for the Democratic Party. The following list displays their reliability. In an amateurish and unorthodox manner that he can call all his own, Smith laments “Black folks in America are telling one party, ‘We don’t give a damn about you.’ They’re telling the other party, ‘You’ve got our vote.’ Therefore, you have labeled yourself ‘disenfranchised’ because one party knows they’ve got you under their thumb. The other party knows they’ll never get you and nobody comes to address your interest.” There are myriad problems in Smith’s political analysis, actually
too many to address in this column. Stephen A. Smith’s public utterances are so bad that one is left considering the possibility that he is consciously seeking to undercut the minuscule power that African-Americans can call their own. His suggestion seems to point out that African-Americans do not understand the Republican Party’s political platform; a party I would like to remind Smith that has busied itself constructing every possible obstacle to African-Americans possessing even the ability to cast a vote in America. Not to mention, the rise of White supremacist language and symbols emanating from the Tea Party, a significant segment of the Republic Party that he is blatantly attempting to get African-Americans to vote for. Smith crudely advises AfricanAmericans to shop their vote around and make the best selection. He seems incapable of comprehending that the Democratic Party has been the conscious informed choice of droves of African-
Americans over the past half-century. Furthermore, Smith misses a larger issue surrounding AfricanAmerican electoral participation. That problem flows from the reality that as long as African-Americans continue to operate inefficiently, it does not matter whom they elect because they will never have a reliable mechanism to hold their elected officials to their campaign promises. The foremost by-products of the Black community’s inability to hold their elected representatives to task are the absence of a unified political voice or goal structure. Put simply, my community moves in a haphazard, awkward, quirky manner that would lead any observer to question if we have any particular destination in mind. This grievous sin must be laid at the feet of a disinterested, lazy, and consistently cowardly ‘Black leadership’ that has repeatedly refused to ‘speak truth to power’ at opportune moments.

This in turn could mean an overhaul of the police department to make diversity and reform a reality. Eight months after the Brown slaying, the April elections will put that thinking to the test. The early signs aren’t good. In the nearly three month period between the day Brown was slain and October 8, a worse than anemic 204 eligible adults in Ferguson newly registered. A month later, less than half of the nearly 25,000 registered voters in Ferguson bothered to go to the polls in the mid-term elections. There was no breakdown by ethnicity of the number who actually did bother to vote. But given the general pattern of less voter participation by minorities in midterm elections, and the far greater
participation of older, conservative White voters, almost certainly, the turnout of Black voters in Ferguson was abysmal. The one faint stir of optimism is the recall petition filed against the current mayor James Knowles. He has made it clear he won’t step down. He moved quickly to pose as the change agent, held a high profile press conference, and has mobilized Black support to beat back the recall effort. Despite his protestations and promises to jump hard on the reform train, he can’t separate himself from a rigid, racially balkanized city governmental structure that has maintained iron-clad political control, and a racially polarizing police force and city administration. The reasons for the chronic past no shows of blacks from the Ferguson polls in part mirror
the reasons for the persistent low minority voter turnout in local and national election in past years. The oft cited reasons are apathy, disinterest, GOP voter suppression, the sense that their vote won’t change anything, that there’s little difference between the two parties, and

If Ferguson Stays Ferguson, Blacks Have No One to Blame but Themselves

erguson will hold municipal elections April 7. The mayor and five of the six city councilpersons are white. Three are up for reelection. Since Michael Brown was gunned down by former Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson on August 9, the one loud refrain has repeatedly been how could a city where African-Americans make up the overwhelming majority of the population be policed by a nearly all-White police force, and governed by a nearly all-White city administration? The thought was that the Brown slaying angered and engaged so many thousands that it was almost a done deal that the first chance Black residents got they’d jam the polls and totally revamp city government in Ferguson. The revamp meant the election of a majority Black city council and

“I used to be a pretty good preacher’s kid until I learned how to cuss…”
I listen to gospel music every day; nearly all day. Thank God for Sirius/ XM/Internet (whatever it’s called) radio. I like it because I was raised in church and that was the only music that I was “allowed” to listen to back in the day. Now, it wasn’t the ONLY music I listened to, but I had to kinda sneak and listen to R&B and other forms of secular music. My parents didn’t allow the “devil’s music” in the house. When they weren’t at home on Saturdays, I used to tune in to “Soul Train” and “American Bandstand” (that was the White folks’ “Soul Train” program; the only difference was that they danced a little bit weird and really fast. If you were in the way, they’d knock yo ass out with they funky dance moves). As soon as I heard my parent’s car pull in the driveway, I turned the television back to “Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids”. “Hey, hey, heyyyyyyy…” I wonder if Bill Cosby was… Never mind. I guess you’ve figured out by now that I must be a “preacher’s kid”. Yes, I am. And you KNOW what they say about preacher’s kids. See, y’all know y’all ain’t right! Y’alls the reason us preacher’s kids act the way we do. Let me explain: “I used to be a pretty good preacher’s kid until I learned how to cuss…” Being a PK didn’t guarantee me protection from y’alls devilish ways. The more I tried to stay saved, sanctified, and filled with the Holy Ghost (I think I just “quickened”), the more some of y’all tried to turn us from grace. Y’all know that
preacher’s kids of the 60s and 70s weren’t supposed to be cussing, but y’all did thangs that tested our spiritual strength. I was raised in a sanctified church; y’all know how we worship: Sunday school started at 9:30, Morning Worship at 11. We sang and “shouted” until 1:00 and THEN my daddy would start preaching around 2:00, right after we’ve taken up two offerings. We would be finished around 3:00 pm, go home and eat, take a nap and journey back to church for “Evening Service around 7:30 PM. Service would end around 10:00 PM and we’d get to bed around 11:30. When we arrived at school the next morning, y’alls funny asses would ask us if we “just got outta church”. See, that’s what I’m talk’n about! I grew up with a lot of heathens… When I got to high school, I was a nice-looking young man. I was tall, dark, and handsome. I was also a pretty good athlete AND student. While I was in the locker room after basketball practice one day, a teammate of mine asked me if I ever “had some”. “Had some WHAT”, I asked. “Hell nawwwllll, Spivey is a preacher’s kid” answered one of my other teammates. “He got’s to wait until he gets married before he gets “some”. Errrrbody in the entire locker room started laughing as I hurried up and got tha hell outta there. I dropped an “F-bomb” on them as I left, which caused them to laugh even louder because they never heard me cuss. I was a senior in high school and never had “some”, but I sho learned how to cuss. I know it wasn’t right and I spent more time repenting than Bishop Eddie Long. Well, not quite that much… Sunday Service Worship. Monday: Prayer Meeting. Tuesday: Midweek Service. Wednesday: Brotherhood. Thursday: Missionary/ Women’s Service. Friday: Choir rehearsal/Young People’s Meeting. Saturday: BBQ Chicken Dinner and Bake Sales for the Building Fund/ Pastor’s Aide. It is Time for Our Black Leaders to STAND UP!
W
hatever your life’s work is, do it well. A man should do his job so well that the living, the dead, and the unborn could do it no better.” Furthermore, it is, “the quality, not the longevity, of one’s life is what is important” these most wholesome words were rendered by the late great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I agree with him and believe that if anyone was worthy of making such a statement then certainly, he was. Dr. King stood and spoke the truth as it relates to the situation of Black America during the era in which he lived. Since that time, there has not been a leader that vigorously stood and consistently cried out with a voice in the same manner in which he did. Therefore, I believe that in fact Dr. King did contribute work in the area in which he operated in that, “no man, living, dead or unborn, could do better”. Accordingly, it is my belief that modern-day preachers, activists, politicians and leaders overall would be wise to take note of Dr. King’s words and follow suit. Research and statistics show that there are more African-American men and women in influential positions in this country than ever before, in the history of these United States. Today, we have African-Americans that are lawyers, doctors, engineers, senators, governors and even up to the highest office in the land, president. But what good are influential people within a culture or society if they don’t stand for anything; and especially if they do not pay homage to those who paved the way for them to have the opportunity to preside in the offices of which they presently do? Our present-day leaders have inherited offices that were built off of the sweat, blood, tears, hard work, lives and sacrifices of our ancestors
and leaders, like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Thus, an obligation is owed to our ancestors to study and embrace our heritage. We MUST Understand, that though we have come a long way, it is just not long enough. This is why it saddens my heart that so many powerful and influential leaders are dying off and there are not many successors that have the passion to lead as our great leaders of old did. The intent and angle is different now, presentday leaders are more concerned with notoriety and what their counterparts will think of their stances and views on certain issues that affect Black America. Now make no mistake, I am aware that there are still some young people that are in office that actually care and are concerned about deep rooted issues that affect our communities. But the majority is more than not. Our great leaders, patriarchs, and warriors are dying off in scores of numbers. Yet perhaps, the most mindboggling attribute to this situation is that the youth of our community doesn’t know anything about leadership, less known what it takes to be an effective leader. Good leadership abilities initiate out of one’s ability to be able to follow. Everyone does not have the charisma, talent, or gift of being a leader. So if in fact you are someone who just happens to be a member of the Black community and are operating in a role of leadership or authority then it would behoove you to use the powers that you have to help and support members of your own community. I am sick and tired of politicians, preachers and other leaders saying that they have the best interest in mind for African-Americans, but then when they get into office or to a place they feel they have arrived it can eas-

ily be determined that their walk does not match there talk. Even still what bothers me most is that members of the Black community still see fit to support these individuals, regardless of. We MUST Understand, that Black leaders should be held accountable to the offices, pacts and promises that they make to the community before they inherit office. We MUST send a message to these leaders that use us to get into office that we will not continue to stand by and support them and once they get into office they totally neglect and forget about us. This is not to state that every preacher, politician or leader does not keep their word and hold true to their commitment. I would not dare insinuate that, because some of my greatest friends happen to be preachers, politicians, activists and others in authoritative roles. Nonetheless, the fact still remains that there are those who lie to get into office and then totally misuse or renig on the promises they made. We MUST Understand that, we have an obligation to our ancestors to pass our history on to the generations that follow us, so that they will know that they must be held accountable when their time comes to stand in the same places that many of us have stood. But how can we effectively pass this information on, when so many leaders deny the truth about: what has happened, what continues to happen and what will continue to happen unless some form of change comes to the status and situation of Black America? Concerns with Predatory Lending Honorable Sefronia Thompson TX 141st Dist.
AUSTIN - Representative Senfronia Thompson filed legislation to help prevent consumers from going into deeper financial debt while trying to pay off their payday or title loan. "In an attempt to curb the abuse some lenders commit against working class Texans, while not cutting off access to these loans that are needed from time to time, I filed HB 3811 and HB 3812 to address concerns many people have with both payday and auto title loans,� said Rep. Thompson.
Payday and auto title loans offer short term, highcost loans to consumers. However, the loans they offer to alleviate financial stress, may cause the consumers to go into deeper financial debt. Payday loans allow customers to leave a personal check for the amount borrowed to be cashed on their next payday or authorize an electronic withdrawal from their bank account for the specific loan amount. Tile loan companies issue loans in exchange for the customer's car title. If consumers are unable to meet the re-payment deadline, they are often given the option to pay a "rollover" fee for a loan extension. "Consumers that
continually apply for these loan extensions ultimately pay more in fees and exorbitant interest than what was initially borrowed," continued Rep. Thompson. "I believe that with some basic regulation, the state can protect consumers from being taking advantage of, without putting the industry out of business." Consumer protection groups growing concerns with payday and auto title lending practices has demonstrated a need for change. Passage of House Bill 3811 and House Bill 3812 will alleviate some of the recurring problems consumers are experiencing and provide equal footing for all those involved in the industry.
DOJ to investigate Texas’ Truancy Laws Honorable Rodney Ellis TX 13th Dist.
AUSTIN - Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston) sent a letter to United States Attorney General Eric Holder requesting that the Department of Justice (DOJ) begin an investigation into racial disparities concerning the application of Texas’ truancy laws. In particular, Sen. Ellis drew attention to Fort Bend ISD, which is in his senatorial district. From his letter: According to a recent Texas Appleseed study, in
Fort Bend ISD, AfricanAmerican students comprised 53.3 percent of truancy cases filed, despite the fact that they only account for 29.1 percent of enrollment. Hispanic students in Fort Bend ISD comprised 32.9 percent of truancy cases filed, but account for 26.5 percent of enrollment. Special education students comprised 10.4 percent of truancy cases filed, but only account for 6.3 percent of enrollment. The problem is statewide. In 2013, Texas prosecuted 115,000 truancy cases, more than twice the number of all other states combined. Statewide, 80 percent of students sent to court for
truancy are low income, and African Americans, Latino, and special education students are disproportionately impacted. “I have serious concerns about how quickly many jurisdictions appear to turn to the criminal justice system to address truancy, as well as the disproportionate targeting of minority and special education students,� wrote Sen. Ellis. “Education is the most important key to unlocking the doors of opportunity. But the Texas truancy system is pushing students who often face economic and social hardships out of the school setting and further away from those opportunities.�

HOUSTON - Recently, the Heart of Faith Worship Center under the leadership of ArchBishop John W. Baines, Sr. held their Annual Church and ‘2015 Family and Friends’ Day celebration. Family, friends, members, guests, smiling faces and thankful hearts gathered from around the city of Houston to attend. The Heart of Faith Worship singers set the tone for an anointed soul-stirring service as they gave praise, adoration and gratitude to God Almighty for 20 years of service. The Worship singers delivered praise-filled singing, led by Tiffany Franklin, which had the audience standing to their feet. Once the offering was received, the Heart of Faith Mass Choir under the direction of Director Shirley Collins rendered songs of jubilee to the Everlasting Father. Minister Dejah LeBlanc served as the Mistress of Ceremony. As the program continued, the floor was open for ‘Family Expressions’, where various members TX-8
graced the podium and shared words of expressions. After which, a photo video was displayed which depicted coverage of the 20 years of service that the Heart of Faith has been in existence. ArchBishop John W. Baines, Sr., then introduced Metropolitan Bishop George Sanders, III (Greater Mt. Carmel Baptist Church). The Greater Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Choir joyfully sung several selections, which served to prepare attendees’ hearts and minds to receive the Gospel of Christ. Following, Bishop Sanders energetically took the stage, encouraging all who came to lift up praise. As he began his delivery he referenced Job 42:10 as a scripture for his text. It states, “And the Lord, turned the captivity of Job when he prayed for his friends, also the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.” As a subject Bishop Sanders used a theme which stated, “He’s Turning it Around for Me!” Ultimately, he delivered a powerful, encouraging and

anointed message. At the conclusion of the service, an announcement of ArchBishop John W. Baines, Sr., book was made. Dr. Baines is the author of, How to Get Past the Hurt. The book addresses how to overcome instances of being discouraged, hurt and afraid. It encourages the believer to examine ones’ life experiences and provides them with exercises that can be applied in everyday life which are synonymous with forgiveness. Furthermore, it seeks to provide the believer with the motivation and encouragement needed to triumph over future bouts of hurt, pain and agony. HOUSTON - Recently, the Aldine Independent School District held its annual Teacher of the Year Breakfast, where a group of dedicated men and women who have the vital job of teaching children were honored. This annual event provides an opportunity for tustees, administrators and business partners to show their appreciation to some of the Nation’s Best! The breakfast was held at the Hyatt North Houston Hotel. 75 Aldine teachers were honored by a choice of their peers as Campus Teachers of the Year for the 2014-15 school year. “I am pleased to announce that Gay Lynn Pierce as AISD’s Elementary/Intermediate Teacher of the Year and Christopher Ceaser as the district’s Secondary Teacher of the Year,” said Aldine ISD’s Superintendent, Dr. Wanda Bamberg. Gay Lynn Pierce is a deaf education teacher at de Santiago EC/Pre-K Center. She has 27 years of teaching experience. She is committed to her job and believes it is her duty to prepare her special students for a bright and promising future. “It is easy to see that I am shaping the person each of my students will become,” she said. “I strive to find ways for the children I encounter to be everything they can be. I will continue that as long as I can.” Christopher Ceasar is a physical education teacher and coach at Nimitz Ninth Grade School. He has nine years of teaching experience and strives to inspire his students on a daily basis. “Before I educate my students, I must elevate
my students,” he said. “Whether in battle, football or other team-strategizing moments, we look to get a better vantage point to obtain victory.” Other district finalists were Tiffany Grant-Scott of Marcella Intermediate School, Mark Faulkner of Odom Elementary School, Jabari Collins of Carver High School and Ronshon Jeffery of Victory Early College High School. Bamberg stated, “I want to thank the Aldine Education Foundation and our business partners who contributed prizes to our winners, finalists and all Campus Teachers of the Year.” AEF presented the two winners with $5,000 each, and presented the fourfinalists $1,000 each. Every Campus Teacher of the Year received $200. United Airlines provided the two winners with a pair of first-class round trip tickets anywhere in the continental United States. Other wonderful prizes were donated by Aldine ISD Virtual Schools, Dahill, DoubleTree Houston Intercontinental Hotel, East Aldine District, Greenspoint Mall, the Houston Astros, Houston Rockets, InvesTex Credit Union and Magoo’s Print Shop. “Congratulations to all of our Campus Teachers of the Year, finalists and winners. I truly appreciate the crucial roles they play on a daily basis in our classrooms,” said Bamberg. On March 24-25, Board members and members of the cabinet were in Austin to visit with area legislators to discuss issues that are important to education.

Aldine ISD will continue to monitor the 84th Legislative session and will provide the community with updates throughout the spring. On March 19, the first community meeting was held to discuss strategic planning with its stakeholders. The turnout from the community was outstanding as close to 500 parents and students were in attendance. Participants filled out a questionnaire and the district will use that feedback to plan for the future as they move along in the process. Your input is needed. “As we move along in the process of planning for Aldine’s future, we will hold our third Steering Committee meeting on Thursday, April 9. During the last week of March, students will begin taking STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) tests. Ninth- and 10th-grade students will take the End-ofCourse (EOC) English tests. Fourth- and seventh grade students will take a two-day writing test, while fifth and eighth-grade students will be taking reading tests. Additional STAAR tests will be administered in late April and May. Spring is always such a busy time in education.

HOW HEALTHY IS YOUR FEET?

our feet should be as important as the rest of your body. Healthy feet are important for you to stay active. If you neglect your feet it can lead unnecessary foot problems. Not taking care of your feet can lead to certain types of infections that can lead to pain and other foot problems. Some common problems with not taking care of your feet: FUNGAL INFECTIONS: Such as athlete’s feet happens because your feet are in shoes most of the time. When your feet are in shoes most of the time it causes moisture which is a perfect place for a fungus to grow. It can also cause a foul smell. This fungus can then cause dry skin, redness, blisters, and itching. This fungus can be hard to cure. Some over the counter products such as Lamisil or Clotrimazole may help but not clear up this infection. If this condition is not treated then it can impair your ability to walk or work. Talk to your podiatrist if this infection does not clear up within a reasonable amount of time. CORNS AND CALLUSES: Caused by pressure when the bony parts of your feet rub against your shoes. Corns usually appear on the tops or sides of toes while calluses form on the soles of the feet. You can avoid corns and calluses by wearing shoes that fit better for your feet. To avoid infection do not try to shave off the corn or callus. See your podiatrist for further evaluation. INGROWN TOENAILS: Caused by a piece of nail piercing the skin. This usually happens when you do not cut your

toenails straight across so the corner of the nail can be seen above the skin. It is best that you use clipper made to cut toenails. Ingrown toenails are usually common in large toes. Seek the help of your podiatrist to remove the part of the nail that is cutting into the skin. SWOLLEN FEET: Commonly occurs when you have been standing a long time. Swelling of your feet may be a sign of a more serious health problem. See your podiatrist if you have this condition. BUNIONS: Are described as swollen and tender joints that develop at the base of your big toe. They are usually caused by shoes that are too small or have a pointed toe. There as some over the counter pain medications such as Motrin,Advil or Aleve that may have with the pain and inflammation that comes with this condition. Seek the help of your podiatrist for further evaluation if inflammation is not relieved within a reasonable amount of time. TIPS FOR KEEPING HEALTHY FEET • Keep your feet dry and clean • Examine your feet for problems • Cut toenails properly. Be more careful if you have Diabetes, circulatory problems, or immune-deficiency diseases. • Avoid sharing footwear • Wear shoes that fit properly Remember you should
