DRASTIC & MUCH NEEDED CHANGE COMING TO HARRIS COUNTY CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM

For far too long, racial disparities within America’s criminal justice system were a given; meaning that African-Americans would be incarcerated at a much higher rate than any other group. Unfortunately for African-Americans, it has always been this way in the land of the free and the home of the brave. The legions of African-American protest groups who have taken the issue of racial disparities in America’s criminal justice system have been frustrated beyond measure by law enforcement agencies and governmental ofﬁcials’ refusal to even speak about this matter in a substantive manner. Law enforcement personnel and Judges only commitment appears to this issue appears to have been an unwavering commitment to locking away more and more AfricanAmericans, regardless of the offense or the catalyst behind their criminal activity. Make no mistake about it, not only are African-Americans being incarcerated at rates that far exceed their percentage of the general population, but also there are seemingly endless consequences for this population, particularly Black men, who become entangled in the American penal system. Scholar and activist Michelle Alexander believes that this issue is made exponentially worse by an unforgiving American populace that is quick to judge others and offer forgiveness at a snail’s pace. Alexander terms the wholesale incarceration of AfricanAmerican men as The New Jim Crow.

Voters in the Democratic primary, as well as those in the Black community and civil rights community in general as represented by NAN, have to choose between two formidable and qualiﬁed candidates. But frankly, neither are as good as they claim, or as bad as their opponent casts them as. One need only look at the two individuals’ own statements and actions. Both Clinton and Sanders supported the omnibus crime bill in 1994. Despite having some good in it, the bill was opposed by me and others because it ultimately would lead to mass incarceration, expansion of the death penalty on a federal level and adverse criminalizing of innocent people. Even though there were appeals by many of us to rethink this legislation, both Democratic candidates supported the questionable bill at that time.

Earl Ofari Hutchinson Author & Political There was a little noted footnote to Democratic presidential contender Bernie Sanders big win in the Wisconsin primary buried deep in the ﬁnal vote stats. Bernie actually bagged a far bigger percent of Black votes than expected. He got more than one-fourth of the Black vote. Now the reason that this got lost in the primary post-mortem is because Clinton as expected got 74 percent of the Black vote. So the 26 percent that Sanders got seemed paltry. The second reason it ﬂew under the post-mortem radar scope is the by-now etched in stone campaign narrative that Hillary has an iron-clad lock on the Black vote, and that Bernie can only win young, white, left voters in “White” states. The Clinton lock on the Black vote notion rests on some well-known and well-tuned reasons that go beyond the fact that she is married to Bill, and Bill’s near universal past popularity with African-American voters has

In the past, Clinton used language such as “super predators” which had racial overtones, meanwhile Sanders recently sloppily responded to a question about racial blind spots by stating that White people don’t know what it’s like to be poor or to live in a ghetto - as if all Blacks ﬁt that description. And on top of these troubling statements, former President Bill Clinton got into a shouting match with protesters in Philadelphia last week who properly questioned the impact of the ‘94 crime bill. Neither candidate is exempt from insulting us. Putting gaffes and bad policies aside, I say we must deal with the substance that either individual is offering today. What will they speciﬁcally commit to? Will they say that he or she will appoint an Attorney General that will continue the instructions given by former Attorney General Holder and pres-

ent Attorney General Lynch to tell their U.S. attorneys across the country not to pursue mandatory minimums for nonviolent crimes? Will they continue commuting sentences of those unfairly incarcerated from the ‘94 crime bill? Will they continue the aggressive ﬁght to protect voting rights for everyone, and overturn state laws that have proven to be an impediment to voting? How will they speciﬁcally address health care disparity, unequal educational opportunities and severe questions of economic inequality? Blacks are still doubly unemployed to Whites, still redlined from home mortgages, still denied business loans and much much more. What are Clinton and Sanders’ track records in dealing with these issues that would make us believe that whatever they propose now is more than some election year rhetoric or false promise? It is a good thing that the questions of

racial imbalance have been raised, but it should not be reduced to just statements and gotcha phrases. The issues of gun control and Wall St. economic inclusion are grave matters that need to be dealt with in a serious manner. The Black vote is pivotal to the Democratic Party and to this election. As such, it must be valued and our concerns must be taken into account by anyone that is vying for that vote. Our community should be respected and the only way to do that is to take seriously our issues, and provide concrete plans that show why we ought to believe that you will deliver for us. A SHOCK: BERNIE IS ACTUALLY BAGGING BLACK VOTES

endowed her. She has a sterling track record and history in speaking out on civil rights, health care, poverty and women’s issues. She has deep ties with legions of Black elected ofﬁcials and civil rights leaders. And she is the one Democrat who blacks, especially black women, say they personally admire. Clinton also learned the bitter lesson of her South Carolina primary loss to Obama in 2008 that did much to wreck her assumed easy glide path to the Democratic presidential nomination that year. This go round there has been a Hillary sighting at just about every Black college, Black legislative function, Black churches imaginable. She’s met with Black Lives Matter activists at times and has done a public mea culpa for bill’s hard-nosed criminal justice initiatives that have resulted in the astronomical swell in the number of Blacks in state and federal pens in America. This seeming lovefest with Hillary at any other time would be more than enough for her to skate through a primary with little worry about being upended. And certainly without a seeming Johnny come lately challenger, the likes of Sanders from one of the whitest states in the union. And a

man who has made clear during much of his Senate career and the embryonic stages of his presidential run that his ﬁrst and last mantra will be chasing the Wall Street money lenders out of the public temples. This seemingly one-trick pony focus assured that Sanders would get almost zero traction and votes when he rolled his campaign to the South. And that’s exactly how it played out. Clinton crushed him with the Black vote there. =But Sanders learned from this. He stepped up his game and has made a mighty effort to get visibility, traction, and endorsements from Black organizations and elected ofﬁcials wherever he can get them. He’s publicly embraced a lot of what Black Lives Matter has said and advocated on curbing police violence, mass incarceration, and criminal justice system reform. He’s lifted a page from the Clinton playbook with some Bernie sightings at Black churches and colleges. He even stopped the tap dance around the one question that more than a few Blacks have asked him: what does he think about reparations? At the Tindley Temple, a Black church in Philadelphia, Sanders didn’t exactly embrace reparations, but he

did concede that the federal government must make a massive effort to give poor Black communities the lion’s share of ﬁnancial aid and should formally apologize for slavery. He’s learned something else about race politics. It’s ﬁne to talk Continue reading online

HOW A LITTLE BLACK JOKE REVEALS SO MUCH ABOUT HILLARY CLINTON Manhood, Race & Culture By Dr. James Thomas Jones III

Recently, Democratic Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio chose to venture into waters that even Angels fear to tread by attempting to inject racial humor into a political event. Clinton attempted to playfully chide de Blasio regarding the lateness of his endorsement of her political campaign by remarking it “Took you long enough.” New York City’s Mayor, who is married to activist and poet Chirlane McCray, an African-American, responded to the Presidential hopeful with the following quip; “Sorry, Hillary, I was running on C.P. Time.” After a bit of nervous laughter, Hillary responded “Cautious politician time. I’ve been there.” For those who may be unaware of the cultural mineﬁeld that both de Blasio and Clinton have willfully chosen to enter, the term translates into ‘Colored People Time’; a stereotypical inference that ‘Colored People’, a term not used since the Jim Crow Era, are always late. In the wake of this ill-advised and even worse timed ‘joke’, both Clinton and de Blasio have expressed regret and stated that they in no way intended to offend the AfricanAmerican community. The primary problem with such a half-assed ‘apology’ is that it reveals how little regard Democratic Party politicians like Bill de Blasio and Hillary Clinton actually have for an African-American electorate that is not only a primary, but also the main pillar to all of their political aspirations. One has to wonder what would have been the national reaction if Hillary Clinton and Bill de Blasio performed the following skit prior to New York’s fast-approaching primary

election. de Blasio:Hey, Hillary, some of the people want to know why they had to pay so much for admission to this event, but received such little food. Clinton: Well, Bill, you should know better than anyone; this is your city after- all. This event was organized by Jews who are notoriously frugal in financial matters. This is ‘Hymie Town’ after all. I am certain that you agree that Hillary would never state such publicly as offending the Jewish Community in such a manner would most certainly mean the end of her Presidential campaign. Although the Jewish community is numerically smaller than the African-American community, their political power which rests upon financial clout and political organization guarantees that they are a force to be reckoned with in the political arena. Keep in mind; you will not become President if you have not answered questions regarding your position on Israel. So the question that should be asked is a very simple one. Why would Hillary Clinton and Bill de Blasio feel so comfortable singlingout African-Americans for this public embarrassment? The answer is simple. Because they can. Hillary knows that with a half-hearted ‘apology’ and a public appearance or two with power hungry elected Black officials, she will once again become the only option for a formidable African-American electorate. Even with the New York primary being approximately a week away, there is no doubt that Black New Yorkers will show out in droves to support Hillary Clinton. I am certain that her only real concern is will they be there on time. Cause you know how Niggers do; if not, ask de Blasio and Clinton about C.P. Time, trust me when I say that they will know exactly what you are asking them about.

BILL CLINTON WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND

All of the very public back-andforth that recently occurred between former President Bill Clinton and ‘Black Lives Matter’ activists over Clinton’s 1994 ‘Crime Bill’ solidiﬁes my belief that White elites do not possess the ability to understand the consistently inconsistent position most African-Americans have regarding crime within the Black community. Quite possibly the most obvious indicator of Clinton’s disconnect is found in his response to ‘Black Lives Matter’ activists’ who have publicly criticized his 1994 ‘Crime Bill’. A visibly angered Clinton responded to disruptive ‘Black Lives Matter’ activists by admonishing, “You’re defending the people who kill the lives you say matter. Tell the truth. You are defending the people who cause young people to go out and take guns.” “I don’t know how you would characterize the gang leaders who got 13-year-old kids hopped up on crack and sent them out onto the street to murder other African-American children…Maybe you thought they were good citizens ….” Therein lays the crux of the issue, the point of disconnect so to speak, white politicians have little comprehension that African-Americans have carved out what is an extremely illogical and hypocritical space where they simultaneously detest Blackon-Black crime while also serving as sympathizers and advocates for friends and family involved in the criminal activities that endanger us all. If we are being truthful about this matter, nearly every African-American family has been torn apart as a result of a rogue, yet still loved, family member’s criminal activities. Keep in mind, when a loved one is incarcerated, those who love them also do that time. White elected ofﬁcials will never understand that the same AfricanAmerican youth that they have heard segments of the Black community blame for its present state are beloved by these very critics. Despite what many may think, ‘drug dealers’ and ‘gang bangers’ are present during fam-

ily functions and holiday celebrations. It is not only a peculiar space to occupy, but also totally unfair to ask African-Americans to serve two masters. The initial master demands that you work to uplift your indigenous community, while the second master demands endless loyalty to wayward family members for no other reason than familial connection. Bill Clinton will never understand that although his characterization of young African-American males as ‘drug dealers’ and ‘gang members’ who the Black community can no longer afford may indeed be an astute quantitatively supportable fact, these young men are also our sons, brothers, cousins, and fathers. And although it may be difﬁcult for someone like Bill Clinton to understand, the vast majority of African-Americans fervently believe that “God ain’t done with them yet.” Until that is understood, any discussion of this issue are quite simply a waste of time. --------------------------------------The Clintons have faced criticism from BLM activists and younger Black voters for months now over that bill, which they say put an unfairly high number of Black Americans in prison for nonviolent offenses. After a protester interrupted him repeatedly, Bill Clinton began to take on that critique directly, making the claim that his crime bill was being given a bad rap. “Here’s what happened,” Clinton said. “Let’s just tell the whole story.” “I had an assault weapons ban in it [the crime bill]. I had money for inner-city kids, for out of school activities. We had 110,000 police ofﬁcers so we could keep people on the street, not in these military vehicles, and the police would look like the people they were policing. We did all that. And [Joe] Biden [then senator and chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee] said, you can’t pass this bill, the Republicans will kill it, if you don’t put more sentencing in it.” “I talked to a lot of AfricanAmerican groups,” Clinton continued.

“They thought black lives matter. They said take this bill, because our kids are being shot in the street by gangs. We have 13-year-old kids planning their own funerals.” Throughout the spirited defense of his policy, Clinton continued to be interrupted, and he repeatedly seemed to single out one protester. “She doesn’t wanna hear any of that,” Clinton said to the protester. “You know what else she doesn’t want to hear? Because of that bill, we have a 25-year low in crime, a 33-year low in murder rate. And because of that and the background check law, we had a 46-year low in the deaths of people by gun violence, and who do you think those lives were? That mattered? Whose lives were saved that mattered?” For several minutes, the discussion of the crime bill, Clinton’s exchange with the protester and the crowd’s attempts to yell and chant over her were missing one thing: any mention of Hillary Clinton, the one Clinton running for president this election cycle. Bill Clinton did finally address her. “Hillary didn’t vote for that bill, because she wasn’t in the Senate,” Clinton said. “She was spending her time trying to get health care for poor kids [referencing her advocacy for the Children’s Health Insurance Program]. Who were they? And their lives mattered. And her opponent [Bernie Sanders] did vote for it. But I don’t blame him either … There were enough Republicans in the Senate to kill this bill, and nobody wanted it to die. That’s what happened.” “But she [Hillary Clinton] was the first candidate, the first one to say let’s get these people who did nonviolent offenses out of prison,” Clinton continued. Men of scholarship, and prophetic insight, must show us the right way and lead us into light which is shining brighter and brighter.” In terms of educating, there is one amongst our community that has dedicated a lifetime of service to the educational and political system of Texas. With an abundance of wisdom, experience and knowledge in tow, State Representative Alma A. Allen has announced her application for the position of Superintendent of the Houston Independent School District. Positioned dead in the equator with a world of political activity on one end, the State Representative is equally balanced with a splendid background of education on the other. Therefore, AfricanAmerican News & Issues has chosen to recognize her as a, “Living Legend” in our book. Continue to read a brief snippet of her story to see why… It is extremely evident that education

has been and is in her DNA, as her family is consumed roundabout with educators. Her mother worked as a teacher in Livingston, until she retired. During an interview, Rep. Allen recalled fond memories of her mother teaching in an one-room schoolhouse. “My mother had so many different students, with so many different levels and subjects,” said Allen. She stated, “She would often tell me you got to help me, because I have so much.” From this experience, Allen was birthed into the system of educating at an early age. To that regard, she began teaching within the Houston Independent School District at the age of 21. Relative to her teaching career, she recently made mention of some of the students that she taught which went on to become prominent members of society. She exclaimed in an interview with Damali Keith of Fox 26 News that, “Senator Rodney Ellis was in my very ﬁrst class.” Initially, she taught at Parker Elementary School and Grimes Elementary School. Swiftly advancing and soaring through the ranks of education, she later became Assistant Principal at

Foster Elementary School and then served as principal at Peck Elementary School, Windsor Village Vanguard Magnet School and G.B.M. Turner Elementary School. Additionally, she worked in human resources and central administration. After offering nearly four decades of impeccable service to HISD, she retired. Thereafter, Rep. Allen continued her career in education as an Adjunct Professor at both Texas Southern University and Prairie View A&M University. She was also elected and served on the State Board of Education for over 12 years. Today, she remains the Vice Chair of Public Education for the State of Texas. Her educational background precedes her insomuch that she holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Education degree from Texas Southern University and a Doctorate of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Houston; as well as a certificate in administration and supervision from the University of Houston. Rep. Allen was first elected to the Texas House of Representatives on November 2, 2004 and has served consecutively until this day. Although, she has been a State Representative for over ten years, she still has not been far from education. During her tenure, she has passed a lot of bills in reference to education. She specifically elaborated on an “autism bill” that she passed, of which she is proud of. Considering that Rep. Allen has already contributed a great deal to the educational system in the State of Texas; she believes that she can bottle all of her expertise and apply it to the position of Superintendent. Her ultimate goal is to ensure that the students in the City of Houston have a world class educational system. “We are educating our children for the 21st century now… They will work on jobs that do not exist and live in homes that we cannot even foresee,” she said. She continued, “We must prepare our children to be leaders of Houston and Texas, and the nation as a whole.” Rep. Allen believes that it is vital to our future that the students of today are equipped to compete at the national level, academically. Hence, she explained that the world itself is so small that we can be in another country within hours. Therefore, it is also imperative that our students are able to participate in a global economy in every aspect. The State Rep. identified a number of goals that she would like to pursue; if given the opportunity to become Superintendent. At the top of her priority list is dealing with student and teacher morale and improving

student achievement. She said, “One of my ﬁrst projects is to deal with morale… I have to deal with that because when the teachers and educators feel good about themselves, it translates into good teachers for our students.” She is an avid supporter of teacher and student morale because she believes that helping both teacher and student; will in return increase the student level of achievement. She stressed emphasis on student achievement being a top priority, because it will ensure that students are successful in every aspect of their lives. One of her ultimate desires’ for HISD is, for the district to be a forerunner and respected leader in the United States. Rep. Allen strongly feels that it is important that, “we have a name that people will respect”. Her intent is to bring stability to the District, so that when educators come they will want to stay because the environment is positive and they feel like they can succeed. Rep. Allen explained the importance of parents being supportive of their child’s educational path. She informed that, “Everybody can’t be the teacher, but you can support your school and make sure that the things that are going on in your school, is what you want to be going on in your school.” “With that we just need a lot of student and community support,” she added. While the Prospective Superintendent has a long list of projects planned, she elaborated on the immediate things that she sees she would like to begin with. As it relates to key individuals that have been inspirational in her career path, Dr. Allen holds her mother in high esteem for being ﬁrst amongst her greatest inspirations’. She also regards her children as motivational factors. She admitted, “My children motivate me too - I have to be a good example for them and that’s also my motivation.” “So that they can be productive and give back education is just a good way to give back and that’s what I inspire to do,” she added. Her son, Lawrence Allen, Jr. was an educator and former Principal of Jesse Jones Senior High School. He is currently the Community Liaison for HISD. Her daughter, Dr. Patricia K. Allen has also dedicated her life to education. She recently retired as Principal from MacGregor Elementary School. Rep. Allen also has a granddaughter who is a teacher at Wheatley High School. COMPASSION IN ACTION “Compassion in Action” is a free monthly event hosted the Community Of Faith Church. This community outreach initiative is the vision of Bishop James Dixon II, Senior Pastor of The Community Of Faith Church. Each fourth Sunday of the month hundreds of church volunteers after the 11:00 a.m. church service caravan in their vehicles to a designated community in northwest Houston to provide resources, information and opportunities. This month (April, 2016) the church volunteers will be at Sylvester Turner Park (2800 W. Little York / Nuben Street) from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The church is excited to have community partners such as: Houston Community College, Superior Healthcare, Mobile 1, The Montrose Center, Gateway to Care, The Open Door Mission Residential and Outpatient Drug and Alcohol Center, and Clear Choice Medical and Dental Center. In addition, the church volunteers serve “Sunday Dinner” to everyone.

INAUGURAL BLUE AND WHITE SCHOLARSHIP LUNCHEON:

HOUSTON - American Politician, Ric Keller once stated that Historically Black Colleges and Universities, or HBCU’s, have played an important role in enriching the lives of not just AfricanAmerican, but our entire country. In addition to religious institutions established in, “the states” the oldest learning facilities that have reared some of the most prolific and affluent African-Americans have been HBCU’s. Recently, it has been reported that due to funding issues our HBCU’s are now confronted with low enrollment rates. The Charlotte Post of Charlotte, NC reported that five HBCU’s have had to either close or deal with accreditation issues within the last two decades. It is imperative that members of our com-

munities understand that the students of today are the leaders of tomorrow. Evidently, the Dillard University National Alumni Association-Houston Chapter is aware of the state of our HBCU’s and is doing everything within their power to combat this issue. The Dillard University Alumni – Houston Chapter is an organization that extends from former graduates of the Historically Black College. Since its’ very existence, Dillard has produced an endless array of successful students that have become proven leaders in the current society. Their pride is exempliﬁed through the continued support of current and perspective students. The Houston – chapter is an extension of the Dillard University

National Alumni Association. Their main goal is to, “raise money for scholarships, recruit students to Dillard University and recognize both deserving alumni both locally and nationally for professional accomplishments and service to the association.” First Vice President of the Houston Chapter and Executive Committee member of the Blue and White Scholarship Luncheon, Chanell Douglas said that one of the primary purpose’s of the event is to, “Aid students who are interested in attending college with the means to pursue an academic career at a prestigious Historically Black College or University (HBCU).” Furthermore she shared that, with the various bills that have been raised

in response to attacking the HBCU community as it relates to funding; the organization is insistent upon doing what they can to assist. Additionally she expressed that, “The alumni of the Houston-Chapter speciﬁcally wanted to come together to raise awareness and show that we stand in unison to protect our own HBCU and further advancements in the college education of African-Americans.”

Therefore, on April 23 at 11a.m., the Dillard University National Alumni AssociationHouston Chapter will host its Inaugural Blue and White Scholarship Luncheon. The luncheon will be held at Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church’s, Vue on the Bayou located at 3015 North MacGregor Way, 77004. The Keynote Speaker of this grand occasion will be Dr. D.Z. Coﬁeld, Pastor of Good Hope

Missionary Baptist Church. Dr. Coﬁeld hails from New York. His educational and religious background precedes him from being a graduate of Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. When news that the body of ﬁrst-year University of Texas dancer and ballerina Haruka Weiser (18) had been discovered in a creek on the Austin campus, I immediately paused for a moment and issued a prayer for her soul and those who loved her, I intuitively realized that they were in the throes of indescribable pain and misery. Most wondered how this could occur on the University of Texas - Austin campus. Parents and students alike have every right to expect to be safe, sound, and secure on a collegiate campus. This was a particularly disturbing blow for the UT-Austin community that had not experienced similar violence since Charles Whitman, a mentally disturbed former Marine, climbed UT’s iconic ‘Bell Tower’ on August 1, 1966 and proceeded to kill 16 people and wound many others. In everyway, Haruka Weiser’s murder signals the death of innocence for many on the UT-Austin campus; they are now forced to deal with the reality that lethal violence can happen to anyone, anywhere, and at anytime. It is a sobering message that most certainly shatters any and all vestiges of innocence or naivety that traditionally blankets co-eds. Although many may publicly state that it really does not matter either the identity or racial identity of the perpetrator of this senseless and random act of lethal violence, the fact of the matter is that this latest event once again displays the reality that when African-American males are involved in such incidents, the world, including huge swaths of the African-American community itself, grab a humongous paint brush

and senselessly paint all Black males as being in someway and somehow at least a little culpable in actions that they most certainly had nothing to do with. A recent e-mail that I received regarding this matter deﬁnitively drove that point home via a subject line of, This Really Makes it Hard on Us as a People. There is no doubt whatsoever that the creator of that electronic communication believes that our entire community, particularly African-American males, is someway and somehow negatively affected by Haruka Weiser’s tragic death, particularly as it came at the hands of seventeen-year-old African-American male Meechaiel Criner. Such sentiments reverted my mind back to a time when African-Americans felt that they could determine the race/ethnicity of the perpetrators of a particular crime based upon the incident; put simply, there was a prevailing belief that there were some crimes that only Black people perpetrated and others, such as murdering your entire family, that whites, particularly white males, perpetrated. DAMN, THINGS DONE CHANGED. The days of believing that there is a difference between the types of crime that Black and white folk perpetrate expired a very long time ago. There may be no greater indicator of our people truly graduating into full American status than our mimicking of the violent crime that has historically served as a convenient pathway to politico economic power for other groups and individuals. HOUSTON - Three local young men, talents’ will precede them on April 28 at Eastdown Warehouse, located at 950 Hardy St., 77020. Together they have a mind to promote a sense of unity, positivity and determination for the Houston music community .They are bringing an all definition to the expression, “If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself.” Collectively, they have combined their busi-

nesses, intelligence, gifts and resources together to form New Wondrous Elevation. New Wondrous Elevation is a conglomerate effort between Keaton Stewart, Trenton Sims and Darius Lindsay. These three positive likeminded individuals have set into motion a six-venue tour in Houston. Tentatively, once they complete their initial tour they will be leaving the city to perform on other platforms throughout the State of Texas.

Entertainment Keaton Stewart is a 24-year-old, whose life has been consumed with music from his adolescent years on up. He is the son of Pastor Lawrence and Arlene Stewart of St. John Community Baptist Church in Pearland. He was reared in the church from a very young age. He recalled during an interview walking around playing on his guitar at the age of four. He said, “My mom said that was going to be my thing”, and I told her, “I’m going to be famous one day!” In recent years, he has anxiously contributed towards making his dream a reality. As a child, he played the drums, trumpet and keyboard, and sung in the church choir. He also played in the marching band throughout his school years. From the 5th grade until graduating from Pearland High School, he played the trumpet. Upon completing high school he continued music courses at Blinn College by playing the piano. He later transferred to Sam Houston University and decided to take a break from school to create his own business, WANE, LLC. WANE, LLC is a Publishing and Music Production company which stands for Wondrous Arts and New Essence. Stewart’s desire is, “to bring out the different genres of music in the City of Houston.”

Since establishing WANE, he has traveled throughout the United States working with various people within the Music industry. Stewart said, “I just been on the grind.” He has been producing in the Music community for eight years. During that time period, he has realized that there will be some, “pitfalls”, so “it’s best just to do it yourself”, he exclaimed. With the incorporation of two business partners, Stewart is planning to promote a message to the community to, “Do You!” While he stressed emphasis on the importance of getting a good education, he said that he believes that there is a certain myth attached with the education system. He does not feel that there is enough influence in our young people today to follow their dreams. Stewart says, “You only get one life and if you have God first and you’re really working hard towards your goals – then just go for it!” “Some people just believe that you go to college, get a degree and then work an 8-5 and then retire at about 60 or so – it does not have to be that way… Just, ‘Do You’,” he said. Throughout his lifetime he shared that he has been inspired by many people. He first reverenced God, and explained that his mother and life itself has served as great inspirational mechanisms for him.

He is grateful for assistance of Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP, the law firm that has been diligent in assisting him with the quest of becoming an entrepreneur. Musically, he has been inspired by men and women of the magnanimous Blues community: Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Johnnie Taylor and Diana Ross, just to name a few. He has stated that he has studied Producers like Luther Vandross and Stevie Wonder in developing his personal repertoire. Darius Lindsay, more readily known as “Pierre D” in the entertainment arena is a native Houstonian. At the age of five, his family relocated to Atlanta where he grew up. He first discovered his passion for music there. He was encouraged by his father to write his thoughts down. He said, “Even if I was having issues, I just wrote it down – eventually my words turned into rhyming”. This method birthed an ingenious rapper within. After graduating high school, “Pierre D” returned to Houston where he went to school for Audio Engineering. He began to learn the background side of the music industry. He stated, “I learned a little bit and went full-speed into my career”. He was at this stage of life when he met Keaton Stewart, while working at a studio near Hobby Airport. “We linked

up and noticed that we shared chemistry amongst ourselves and produced a business relationship”, he said. He and Keaton both shared the same viewpoints in acknowledging that they felt they needed to build their own platform. With unselfish minds, these young creative brothers wanted to ensure that other artists from the Houston community would have a chance. Their intent is to promote themselves as well as giving other artists the opportunity to learn the “business side of things”, while having the chance to be exposed to the Music world. Cameron Lavergne is the ﬁrst female student in Booker T. Washington history to hit a home run at Delmar Stadium. Anyone I have ever asked about Cameron has said the same thing, she is very positive about everything, and many admire her, whether it be as a role model in sports or just someone to look up to and always be a positive example, she is one of a kind, she is extremely talented, and she is a Booker T. Washington High School legend. She plans to attend Trinity University in San Antonio, where she will majoring in engineering, continuing to play softball, and has received a partial scholarship to cover her education. She is from the 3rd Ward, Texas and continues to reside there with her very supportive parents. She currently plays volleyball, basketball, track, softball, and golf! Along with all of that she takes all AP classes. Talk about an All Star! Despite having very little free time she still makes time to hang out with her friends and take care of business like applying for the many scholarships she runs around

Members of Memorial Hermann Hospital and Cornerstone Hospital were also present. The Acres of Angels organization was able to effectively convey to the community that, “diabetes can be prevented or maintained through proper diet and exercise.” During a brief interview with Edna Griggs, President and Chief Executive Ofﬁcer of Acres of Angels, she informed that, “Acres of Angels is an organization that is about helping the community.” The vision was given to her about creating a community-based program that would serve to educate people about diabetes. This is an effort that she is passionate about, because she remains a diabetes survivor. She along with her organization travels throughout the community visiting with the elderly and youth population to inform them about preventive and maintenance measures as it relates to the disease. She said her focus of this event was to, “bring it back to

EVERYONE FROM SENIORS TO YOUNGSTERS ENJOYES THE DAY HOUSTON - Recently, The Acres of Angels hosted their 4th Annual Diabetes Walk beneﬁtting diabetes-related efforts for minorities in Houston. The walk took place at Lincoln Park located at 979 Greenshaw St., 77088. Residents from various communities, vendors, health professionals and a host of other participants gathered in support of the Diabetes Walk. This event proved to be a success as captured by video and photographic images. In addition to attendees walking the track of Lincoln Park, supporters were able to participate in Zumba and line dancing. Mrs. Houston International also came out and spoke to the gathering, as well as

the community.” She continued, “Whereas many people chose to do walks downtown, we have to realize that everyone does not have the means to get there.” Tentatively, Griggs is making plans to organize walks in other communities to ensure that residents throughout Houston are aware of the affects of diabetes. Additionally, President Griggs was awarded a proclamation from the United States Congress for her efforts to raise awareness in the Acres Home community. The Certificate of Congressional Recognition from the 18th District of Texas was read openly, nearing the conclusion of the Walk. Sponsor of the 4th Annual Diabetes Walk was Candidate for Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1 Place 1, Mr. Eric William Carter. Carter expressed that he was a proud supporter of the disease that affects over, 400,000 Houstonians. He said he, “jumped to the challenge to assist Acres of Angels with their efforts in raising awareness for diabetes.” “It is an affliction that many people in Harris County suffer from,” he added. Edna Griggs is a community and political activist. Activism is a sport that runs in her blood as her mother and grandmother taught her at an early age; the values of being concerned with one’s fellow man. They taught this by example. Her mother was a nurse and political activist and her grandmother was a business owner in the community. In addition to being the President and CEO of Acres of Angels, Griggs is also CEO of Edna’s Social and Charity Club (The Rebirth). This was an organization originally birthed by her grandmother in the 1950’s. It was designed to help people living in poverty and help build self esteem. Griggs has made a vow to shadow her grandmother’s steps in continuing the association. Today, she continues to raise awareness about diabetes and is hopeful in the support of various efforts to find a cure for diabetes.
