and those who disagree with his boorish behavior and draconian utterances, the campaign of Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump has displayed the unmitigated gall to deny media credentials for Black Lens, an independently owned AfricanAmerican Newspaper with a monthly publication of approximately 1,000 readers during a recent campaign stop in Spokane, Washington. There is no doubt that this decision was a tactical move by the Trump campaign as it has previously denied access to media outlets, most notably the Huffington Post and the Des Moines Register, that it considered unfriendly to the Billionaire’s campaign. The granting of media credentials is taken almost as a given during a political season, put simply, it is totally advantageous for those seeking political office as it provides them with not only free publicity for their campaigns, but also an unprecedented opportunity to have their message reached previously inaccessible portions of the electorate. The Trump campaign is apparently astute enough to realize that the spreading of their message among nonWhite, educated, and politically astute populations is not a positive. Hence, the decision to deny media credentials to Black Lens makes total sense. Sandra Williams, the editor of Black Lens related that “My gut says that it has to do with the fact that the name of my paper is the Black Lens. Based on the rhetoric that he’s been spewing around the country, it would make sense that he did not want a black newspaper covering what he says in

his rallies. That’s the assumption that I’m making.” Black Lens was informed that they would not be granted access to the venue in the following email. “During the 2016 Presidential Primary race, the Donald J. Trump Campaign fully recognizes and respects all media but due to various venue sizes, media space, and safety we must limit the number of credentialed media and give priority to our national and local outlets. We appreciate your understanding.” For most politically astute people, the Trump campaign’s decision to deny Black Lens access to their event, a position that they inexplicably reversed four hours prior to the start of the rally, is merely foreshadowing what a Trump Presidency promises for those who have disagreed with the Republican candidate’s rhetoric, political jargon, and divisive tone. In many ways words cannot convey the concern that American citizens should have regarding any candidate that would deny access to the Press. It is most certainly a gigantic step in the wrong direction and if Americans are not aware of what this decision means for us all, I shudder when I think about the approaching storm. It is in the approaching storm that one will find a wicked cocktail of hatred, intolerance, and racism that this nation has not seen sense the decline of American chattel slavery. I had the good fortune to spend a portion of my birthday in the grandest fashion I could have ever imagined; I was invited to speak about Malcolm X’s timeless speech ‘The Ballot or The Bullet’ at the Edgar M. Gregory School located in Houston, Texas’, 4th Ward. This location is commonly
referred to as Freeman’s Town by those who have any knowledge of the Bayou City’s history of terse racial dynamics. The location that I was speaking the Gregory School has special significance as it is the location of the first public school for Black Houstonians; it now houses the African-American

After completing what can only be termed a well received presentation that revolved around one of Malcolm X’s most memorable moments, a retired teacher posed the following question to me. “What is wrong with AfricanAmerican males? Why are the fighting against receiving an education? Many of them just sit in

Now that I think about it, the disinterested gaze and refusal to engage what is most certainly engaging and pertinent content reminds me of one of this nation’s most infamous citizens, President George W. Bush. Although I can neither tell you where I was nor what periodical I was reading, I do remember that I was somewhere reading a random news story about former President George W. Bush. The article, told
that sparked his interest in any topic or subject matter. Put simply, according to his collegiate counterparts, Bush was intellectually dull, uninspired, a damn imbecile.

WHAT A CRISIS LOOKS LIKE I must tell you that I have grown tired of AfricanAmericans, leaders and everyday citizens, lending their time and resources to initiatives and projects that have little to do with our community. If one did not know any better they could be convinced that there was no suffering occurring within the Black community. One would have to be totally blind to everything occurring around them for them to believe that there is no suffering occurring within Houston’s AfricanAmerican community. Of all of the problems that we could address on a local and national basis, there is quite possible no greater issue than that found among African-American males. Consider the following for a moment: • Forty-two percent of Black students attend schools that are under-resourced and performing poorly. • Black boys are three
times more likely to be suspended or expelled from school than their White peers, missing valuable learning time in the classroom. • Black and Hispanic males constitute almost 80 percent of youth in special education programs. • Black boys are 2.5 times less likely to be enrolled in gifted and talented programs, even if their prior achievement reflects the ability to succeed. • Black male students make up 20 percent of all students in the United States classified as mentally retarded, although they are only nine percent of the student population. • Twenty-eight percent of core academic teachers at high-minority schools lack appropriate certification. Less than half of Black male students graduate from high school on time, although many eventually complete a GED. • Nationally, only 11 percent of Black males complete

This combination of words suggests a “falling from a higher to a lower level in quality, character, or vitality that implies generally the impairment of value or usefulness”. It’s a pretty damning statement if it were meant for school-aged children; therefore, I won’t use it to describe them. However, this generation of “po ass parents” fit the bill quite nicely. Let me explain… Teachers are tired of taking the blame for the poor academic performances of students throughout the United States. There’s nothing more disheartening than having your careers and livelihoods determined by adolescents and end of course exams designed isolate the “smart kids from the dummies.” That, too, is a strong statement in defining the successes and failure of kids who are divided into “sub-pops” (populations) according to race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic statuses. When the testing is over and the grading completed, the failure rate of exit-level (11th grade) testing is increasingly rising to the point where state legislatures are scurrying to find ways to help seniors (who failed

Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. ~ Calvin Coolidge a bachelor’s degree. • By the fourth grade, only 12 percent of black male students read at or above grade level. • By the eighth grade, only 9 percent of black males read at or above grade level. • African-American males are nearly twice as likely to drop out of school compared to their white peers. • In many urban areas, African-American males drop out of high school at a rate of nearly fifty-percent. • The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) critical reasoning scores are an amazingly 104 points lower than their peers on average. • A black male born in 1991 has a 29% chance of being incarcerated in prison at some point of his adult life. • One out of nine African
American men will be in imprisoned between the ages of 20 and 34. • Black males ages 30 to 34 have the highest crime rate of any race/ethnicity gender and age combination. • In 2014, 6% of all black males ages 30 to 39 were in prison, compared to 2% of Hispanic and 1% of white males in the same age group. • The Lifetime chances of going to prison are 32.2% for Black males and 17.2% for Latino males, while only 5.9% for White males. • 1 in 3 black males will go to prison in their lifetime. Need I say anymore? While we are struggling on a momentby-moment basis, many within our community behave as if this is not the stark reality we are collectively facing on a daily basis. Trust me when I say that the

THAT’S “po ass parenting”. It is also why state-mandated exams like the TAKS and STAAR (which was originally designed to separate minorities from privileged children, in my opinion) have failed miserably. Instead, it showed that kids who lived in families with six-figure incomes are just as dumb as kids on food stamps when they struggled with classroom instruction. It’s also rooted in behavior issues that know no social boundaries. If yo kid is a badass, he/she is just a badass. That’s a po ass parent’s fault. The high-tech era was supposed to usher in cognitively skilled children who are enriched in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. All these levels of student coaxing leave out one important element that has been around long before Abraham Maslow’s little theoretical pyramid was formed in 1934, that is, good old-fashioned, parent administered ass-whuppings. problem is so big that any contribution that you make will be welcomed. Find a way to make some type of contribution to this problem and allow that to be your declaration of “No More!!!!!” It is such a mindset that we most definitely need to turn the tide regarding the mis-education and ultimate incarceration of the men within our community. Back in the day, prior to computers and smart phones, it appears that students learned more with less. All of this gadgetry, in my opinion, has made children’s brains softer and lazier. They can’t even remember 20 phone numbers by heart. In the 70s, I could remember phones books of numbers, addresses, and directions. Forget a GPS… When all the dust settles and your child(ren) have exhausted all of their time in high school, they will be returning home to roost if “po ass parenting” still resides at the same address. Therefore, I would like to strongly suggest to parents with young kids to teach your children some damn manners, respect, and courtesy way before they set foot in anybody’s school-house. In doing so, you can almost guarantee that their teachers will be able to help you mold them into productive students and great citizens. HOUSTON - With 19 biological brothers and sisters, Courtney Goodson is making all of her family members very proud having her own business Power Media, which officially launched in September of 2015. Courtney is a recent graduate from The Woodlands College Park High School, and is now a sophomore at Lonestar College. In addition to her studies and managing her own business, she has three additional jobs that keep her very busy. She works at Legends Sports Complex, BMW as a receptionist, and she is also an assistant to a reality T.V. star Jelaminah. Although life is good, Courtney has had her challenges; one being that her father has been locked up for about ten years. Courtney is 19 years old, so her father has missed a lot of moments in Courtney’s life. Despite his absence, Courtney hasn’t missed a beat, as she continues to push forward in making all of her dreams come true. “I stay in contact with him, it’s not like he is even gone because we talk so much on a day to day basis. He still has a
lot of influence in my life.” Power Media is based on promoting individuals and their businesses and talents. This company was started after Courtney was told “no” too many times. Courtney was seeking different opportunities in the broadcast production field, and she had applied for different internships, but no one would give her the opportunity. This disappointment only fueled her desire to create an opportunity for herself, and for others. “I was tired of being told no. I shouldn’t have to wait until I’m a junior or senior in college to be able to get the opportunities, but I also want to create the same opportunities now for people who are younger than me…so that they are not told no.” Courtney promotes different individuals in order to give them the opportunity that wasn’t given to her. With a love for broadcast production, one of her main goals in life is to have her own show. With advice and guidance from her mom, Courtney started interviewing different individuals in
order to get her name out to the public. She has interviewed many people including NFL athlete Adrian Peterson. With this in mind, she then created a YouTube channel to market herself and the other people that she is trying to promote. “That’s what power media is about. Just trying to help people get their name out there because I didn’t have anyone to do that for me.” Courtney believes in helping others, and assisting them in trying to reach their dreams. Power Media has impacted the community in a positive way. Many people reach out to her asking for help with promoting themselves. Furthermore, she is inspiring others to reach out and not keep their dreams and passions hidden. There are numerous individuals who have great ideas and talents, but they never surface because they don’t know how or who can help guide them in the right direction. Courtney is one avenue people can use to lean on and help set their passions free. Courtney has many different visions for Power Media. Her main goal is to get Power Media as a show on television. “I just want Power Media to help brand myself to the person I need to be so that when it is time for the opportunity to have my own show, I’ll have it, I’ll be prepared and ready.” Courtney doesn’t have any other long term goals in mind; she is just figuring things out as she goes along. She doesn’t like to speak anything into existence that she doesn’t see in a vision. To truly understand what makes Carter so special one has to hear the conviction in his voice, which rings of truth, when he speaks about whom he is and what he plans to do if elected to the aforementioned position. As someone who has done hundreds of interviews with elected political officials and those aspiring to such a status, I have learned to pay very close attention to not only the manner in which candidates speak, but also which topics they initially address, there is no doubt that the opening stanza reveals much about who they are as a person, as well as what their true priorities are. Although I was neither shocked nor particularly impressed when Carter’s initial words conveyed what appeared to be routine political speak about his desire to “treat every citizen in Precinct 1 with the dignity and respect that they deserve when they come into my courtroom.” As I am certain that you agree, such language is standard rhetoric for aspiring politicians. However, I soon learned that there was much substance behind Carter’s initial expression; my interest was undoubtedly piqued. “I have always followed something that my father stated. That being, ‘The first time that a child meets a judge should not be when they are standing in front of a judge.’” It is such sentiment that has served as a shining North Star for this man of God along what is always a rocky political road with innumerable temptations. As I listened to Eric William Carter speak I learned that not only was community outreach something he planned to do if elected to political office, it was something that he was presently doing with the aid of his brother, District Judge

Are you caring for a minor child or a disabled loved one? Are you having trouble handling their business, medical, and personal affairs because you do not have the required documentation to show you have the authority to do so? If your answer to these questions is YES, you may consider applying for a guardianship. What is a guardianship? A guardianship allows an individual that has been taking care of a minor or disabled person to be formally recognized by the court. It is a court-supervised administration, where the guardian is the person appointed by the court to care for the minor or incapacitated person; the minor or incapacitated person is referred to as the ward by the courts. Different types of Guardianship? • Guardianship of the Person: A guardian of the person is a guardian appointed to take care of the well-being of a ward is called. Guardianship of the Estate: A guardian of the estate is a guardian appointed to take care of the ward's property. Responsibilities of the Guardian: Although you may have been caring for the minor or incapacitated person prior to establishing a guardianship, your duties increase greatly once you are appointed guardian by the court. Why Is High Blood Pressure Common in African-Americans? To date, researchers do not have a definitive answer to this question, but some believe that high blood pressure in African-Americans may be triggered by the following factors: Genetic factors. High rates of high blood pressure in African-Americans may be due to the genetic make-up of people of African descent. Researchers have uncovered some facts: In the U.S, blacks respond differently to high blood pressure drugs than do other groups of people. Blacks in the U.S. also seem to be more sensitive to salt, which increases the risk of developing high blood pressure. Environmental factors. Some scientists believe that high blood pressure in AfricanAmericans is due to factors unique to the experience of blacks in the U.S. Blacks worldwide have rates of high blood pressure that are similar to whites. In the U.S., however, the difference is dramatic: 41% of blacks have high blood pressure, as compared to 27% of whites. In addition, black people in the U.S are more likely to be overweight than Blacks in other countries. Some experts think that social and economic factors -including discrimination and economic inequality -- are responsible for this difference. Researchers will hopefully find the causes for the high incidence of high blood pressure in African-Americans. In the meantime, there is a lot you can do to keep high blood pressure from damaging your health. High Blood Pressure Risk Factors for African-Americans Being African-American is a risk factor for developing high blood pressure. Others include: • Increased age • Excessive weight • A family history of high blood pressure • Having diabetes • Inactivity
• High dietary salt and fat • Low intake of potassium • Smoking The more risk factors you have, the more likely it is that you have high blood pressure or will develop it in the future. Take steps now to find out more. Even if you don’t have high blood pressure, you can lower your risk by following the treatment guidelines for high blood pressure in African-Americans. Do You Have High Blood Pressure? Your doctor can easily measure blood pressure. A blood pressure reading includes two numbers, one written on top of the other. The top number is called your systolic blood pressure. This number represents the force of blood through your blood vessels during your heartbeat. • 119 or below is the normal systolic blood pressure. • 120-139 is prehypertension. • 140 and greater is high blood pressure for people younger than 60. • 150 is high blood pressure for people aged 60 and over. The bottom number is called your diastolic blood pressure. This number represents the force of blood through your blood vessels in between heartbeats, while your heart is resting. • 79 or below is normal diastolic blood pressure. • 80-89 is prehypertension. • 90 and greater is high blood pressure. Blood pressure changes throughout the day, depending on your activities. Blood pressure changes over time, as well. Systolic blood pressure tends to rise as you get older. Diastolic blood pressure may decrease as you get older. If either of your blood pressure readings is consistently above normal, then take action right away.

Charles Turner was born to Eddie and Ruby Turner on January 22, 1947. His birth name was Alfred, but everyone called and knew him as Charles, he was the third oldest of nine children. He was baptized at an early age at Magnolia Missionary Baptist Church. He attended Kerrville Elementary School until the fourth grade, and later attended the community school that was built, Garden City Elementary graduating in the 8th grade. While attending George Washington Carver High School, he was very active; He was an avid player of sports, known
for his skills in Baseball and Basketball and it was his speed and agility that his friends bestowed upon him the name "CHILI RED". His great accomplishments was being a member of the Honor Society, Vice-President of the Student Council, Vice-President of the President’s Council, graduated Valedictorian Class of 1965. He was loved and admired by his family as well as his neighborhood family in Garden City Park. He enjoyed life. He along with his brother’s and friends in the neighborhood would ride with his father painting houses and cutting yards to earn money on the weekends. Charles joined the United States Air Force, July 7, 1965 and was honorably discharged on September 18, 1968. He returned home where he lived with his mother and brother. He never complained no matter what the circumstances. The family will remember Charles for his famous phrase as he would smile and say: "I’M ALL RIGHT". Charles was preceded in death by his parents one sisters and two brothers. Charles Turner leaves to mourn; Rev. Leon Turner (Linda), Patricia Dinnon, Clifford Turner, Mayor Sylvester Turner, Robert Turner, Jacqueline Turner, Donald Ray Turner (Debra), Everett Turner (Doris) of San Antonio, TX and Madie Thompson of Oakland, Calif.; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
