In The Souls of Black Folk, scholar/activist W.E.B. Du Bois prophetically stated that “the problem of the twentieth-century is the color line.” Although I hold Du Bois above all other American thinkers, history has proven him wrong. In light of the continuing racial discord that has befallen his people, Du Bois’ statement should be amended to read as follows; ‘the problem of this nation for as long as it exists, will be the problem of the color line.’ It appears that racial animosity is woven into the very fabric of this nation; I am certain that if we closely inspected ‘Old Glory’ we would find that racism, prejudice, and discrimination is the very thread that that holds that symbol of democracy and equality for mankind together. I must relate that as someone who writes about racial matters on a daily basis, I have tired of writing about racial attacks. Further frustrating has been this tendency of whites to turn to Blacks and request that they work with them in regards to defeating prejudice, discrimination, and racism. Even more frustrating is the cowardice of so-called Black leaders who immediately fall in line and might as well scratch their heads and respond, “Yessa, boss!!!!!!! Anything that you sayyyaaahhhhh.” It is in this moment that ‘Black leaders’ betray their constituents by refusing to ‘speak truth to power’ as they shud-

der at the expected consequences that would flow from their quipping a single word in support of their people. With all of that said, I must forthrightly relate that I am not only disgusted by the murders that occurred in Charleston, South Carolina, by a random white male who simply walked into the historic African Methodist Episcopal Church, sat down for an hour during Bible Study and then proceeded to murder eight AfricanAmericans, but also disappointed to see African-Americans standing around the church mourning the fallen with their arms interlocked with ‘well-meaning whites’ in a prayer circle. Now I am certain that you are questioning why an interracial prayer circle angers me. At a superficial level I have little issue with it; however, at a deeper level I realize that such action is tantamount to an earthly surrender of human agency. I fear that before
long, things will return to normal, with whites holding all of the financial might and political power to determine what occurs in a city such as Charleston. You know the normalcy that I speak of, the same normalcy that returned to this very city after Walter Scott, Jr., was shot down by a law enforcement officer. Or the type of normalcy that eventually returned to Birmingham, Alabama, after Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson and Cynthia Wesley were killed at the 16th Street Baptist Church by a stack of dynamite planted under a stairway by members of the Ku Klux Klan. This morning in Charleston, South Carolina, a city that carries the moniker of ‘the Holy City’, there are nine dead AfricanAmericans who desired to do nothing other than to learn more about the Gospel that their Lord and Savior preached two-thousand years ago at a church that was ironically founded in protest to the treatment
that their ancestors received at the hands of white Christians who believed that God would sanction their sanctimonious segregation, discrimination, and racism. The efforts of the righteous to honor their God were destroyed by a horrific terrorist attack that came from the same location that all such attacks emanate from, a white community that has historically refused to harness the vitriolic hatred that significant segments of that community have allowed to exist. There is little room to debate that Black Christians throughout this nation need to follow the lead of their Jewish brethren and not only arm themselves, but also actively use those armaments to protect themselves, those they love, and their institutions --- particularly places where our women and children are assembled. Now this is most certainly not an order to go out and murder whites, however, ALL must be viewed skeptically in light of the repeated murder of Black
men, women, and children. In regards to those ‘wellmeaning whites’ who always find themselves in an inter-racial prayer circle in the wake of a horrific terroristic attack by one of their own, please go home and pray in your own communities. Trust me when I say, we are covered on the prayer front; many of our people actually do too much praying and not enough action, too much singing and not enough swinging. To the white community trust me when I say that you should pray for your community, because as an unnamed abolitionist once lamented to his slave-holding brethren, “If God is just, and I believe that he is, we will burn in Hell for this shit.” Rest assured that God is not dead and he sees ALL. So go on home and battle those demons that live in your midst, rest assured it is the only means of achieving even a tenuous racial peace.
In February, 2015, the Spokane, Washington NAACP chapter sought action on job discrimination and civil rights violations complaints, took on Comcast, secured legal support for a transgender sexual assault victim, filed police racial profiling complaints, demanded an investigation of KKK literature in the area, and an FBI investigation of other hate crimes, and backed several job discrimination lawsuits. In addition, the Spokane NAACP branch has aggressive, activist committees on education, health care, and criminal justice reforms. That month was typical of the strong work it has done on civil
rights. These actions plopped Spokane NAACP President Rachel Dolezal squarely in the hate monger’s bulls-eye. She received threats and hate mail, and there was a reported break-in at her home. Dolezal was undaunted, “I stand by the work that I do for civil rights, and I should be able to do that work that needs to be done here in Spokane.” Dozens agreed with her. They expressed their support at a Spokane City Hall rally in March. Dolezal is back on the hot seat again. This time the heat is on -- not from unreconstructed bigots but many African-Americans who rail at her for allegedly being a
white woman who claims to be African-American. The issue ostensibly is that she lied and misrepresented herself as black as the NAACP leader. But the real issue is whether a non-black is fit to lead a branch of the nation’s oldest civil rights organization. This is a spurious, silly and nonsensical concern especially since many of the NAACP’s original founders were white and Jewish. In its more than a century of existence, the organization has fought for civil and equal rights -- barring color. In that light, Dolezal has done a phenomenal job. She’s taken a small chapter in a neck of the woods that in times past has been
near an area well-known as a hotbed of white supremacist and armed militia organizing, and made it a true fighting organization. Dolezal should ignore the criticism and keep doing the great job she’s done. A college dropout in 1978; married at 19, five kids by the time I’m 26, divorced at 30, single and still raising kids for 7 years; laid off my job, remarried at 37, stepdad to two mo kids, money is tight/low; returned to college at age 41, graduate at 44, help 7 kids through high school and 6 through college and just finished my 11th year of teaching. Who does that?! In all of what happened to yo favorite coach above, the common denominator for me being alive and sane is God. The one constant in my life during those times was me falling down on my knees every night and praying. Life was kinda hard way back then; at times I didn’t even know what to pray or ask for. All I could say was: “thank you, Jesus”. I guess I was thanking Him in advance for whatever He was about to do; I just didn’t know when it would happen or if it WOULD happen. “I shouldn’t even be here.” I can’t believe that y’all are sitting here reading all of this crap that I spew out on a weekly basis; I’m even more surprised that this reputable newspaper and its owners would allow me a platform to entertain you with what I have to say. I’m a novice writer at best; honing my craft as I go along, always relying on what comes natural to me combined with the literary skills I obtained in grade school and college. I may lose a few people along the way who read my jibber-jabber, eboniclaced, editorials, but sometimes this ISH is interesting. I hope I’m not an embarrassment to the other, more seasoned
writers in this paper. I guess I can do a little better having been taught by PVAMU’s finest to scribe my thoughts in a more collegiate-level, scholarly journal type manner, but I figure as long as y’all can understand what the hell I’m saying, it doesn’t matter how I get my point across. I keep on telling y’all that I shouldn’t even be here, but there’s a reason I am. You see, whatever God puts in you will eventually come out. I needed patience, so He made me wait. I needed discipline, so He gave me pain. I needed encouragement, so He gave me hope. I needed joy, so He gave me laughter. I needed treasure, so He gave me a job. I needed reminders of how hard-headed I could be, so he gave me kids. It’s all beginning to make sense now. The metamorphosis is nearly complete; then again, no it ain’t… I don’t like to get too comfortable in trying to forget where I came from and what I’ve been through. History has a way of repeating itself. Life’s experiences have shaped the way I’ve become; I know now that if I keep bumping my head against a brick wall, it’s highly probable that my dumb ass would end up with an concussion, therefore, I don’t do that no mo. Those same walls were standing and smiling at me when I was trying to defeat them many years ago, to no avail, but thanks be to God those walls started tumbling down. I guess this where that I should insert a hash tag with the word “Grace” next to it. As I end another school year, I always leave a message to my students: “it’s not how you start, its how you finish.” If He can do it for me, He can do it for you. That’s all I have to say about that. HOUSTON - Lorenzo Johnson was born in Laurel, Mississippi and raised in Ellisville. At an early age, he developed a passion for basketball. He found that the sport would serve to be a, “safe haven” for him. Thus, he used this avenue as a means to channel his energy from as early as the fifth grade. At the behest of his friends, he sought a place in playing football but soon realized that the sport didn’t acquire his interest the way that basketball did. It was, Coach Casey Price who took Lorenzo under his wings at an early age. He developed and showed him that basketball could be a way out. Although, academics was not necessarily a strong asset of his at that time, a sudden change occurred. While in the ninth grade, he recalls receiving multiple offers from various colleges. Eventually, this element was one that encouraged him to become more serious about his educational goals. He was excited at the opportunity to receive a scholarship and set out to achieve that objective. At this point in his life, he had already began to make a name for himself. His athletic abilities labeled him as one of the best in the country. This milestone was confirmed when he was nominated for McDonald’s prep All-American, a very esteemed honor. . After graduating high school, he went on to attend Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. It was there that he met the, “the love of his life”, his wife Priscilla. TX- 4
While at CSU, he helped lead his team to two post-season NIT appearances, and made school history with a record that ranks his rebounding averaging as 4th among all freshman players. Eventually, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Social Sciences. Afterwards, Lorenzo went on to soar into the world of professional basketball. He criss-crossed several countries demonstrating his exceptional athleticism capabilities. Within a time span of eight years he played in: Izmir, Turkey (Gelism Koleji), Irbid, Jordan (Hussein Irbid), NBDL – Asheville Altitude, Beijing, China (Aoshen), Dominican Republic (Hidalgos de Santiago), St. Petersburg and Russia (Spartak). He also played with the Harlem Globetrotters and the Houston Rockets. Aware that most basketball players have a peak that lasts from 3-4 years as a career in professional basketball, he was cognitive of the fact that he could not play basketball forever. So while playing professionally, he would come home during the off-season and work in after-school programs. He knew that as an athlete he needed an athletic resume as well as a professional one, in the event that something would ever prevent him from playing the sport he had come to love. During that time, he was living in Denver, CO. Therefore, he developed a relationship with the Denver Parks and Recreation facility in his area and was afforded the privilege to coach and mentor

neighboring youth from the community. Little did he know this experience would serve to be beneficial later on in his career. Shortly after playing for the Houston Rockets and becoming a free agent, Lorenzo and his wife Priscilla, experienced a life-changing event. While he was still at the height of his professional career, she became pregnant and began to encounter complications associated with it. Originally, she was pregnant with twins and miscarried one of them after only a few months. Undoubtably, the second baby remained in distress, as a result of this factor. As a result, she was hospitalized early on in her pregnancy. The doctors were hearing a heartbeat, but there was no blood flow or oxygen from her to the baby. At a point when she had begun to take a turn for the worst; due to her organs starting to fail, doctors made a decision to take the baby. Consequently their son, Lorenzo, II was delivered three months early, weighing only one pound. The doctors gave him 24 hours to determine if he would pull through. Ultimately, it was found that he was not attached to the umbilical cord and doctors were unsure of how he was able to survive in such a state. Nonetheless, he was placed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for five and a half months. Though he did have some complications such as severe lung and reflux issues and lived the first six years of his life with a g-tube; he did not have brain issues and other ailments that babies in similar situations do. He defeated the odds because the doctors said that he would never be able to walk. This unfortunate incident, caused Lorenzo and Priscilla to restructure their lives. Priscilla made a conscientious decision to leave her job as an engineer and Lorenzo stepped away from his basketball career and began to work a 9 to 5 to accommodate the situation and focus on his family. Today, their son is an honor student and model citizen who is going to the 9th grade. His father describes him as a, “leader and role model for other children”. Lorenzo and Priscilla remain confident in the career sacrifices that they made as parents. Lorenzo said, “if I had to redo it all over again, I would do the exact the same thing.” Lorenzo and Priscilla rests assured that it was the their faith in God that allowed them the strength to persevere through this difficult time in their lives’. Once Lorenzo retired from playing professional basketball, he immediately pursued a career in assisting with after-school programs and found a lot of success in his

endeavor. Upon relocating to Houston, he initiated a career in the teaching industry. He became an instructor of the Physical Education department and was soon asked to coach the basketball team. He started coaching the girls basketball team and then the boys program. He was then elevated to being the Athletic Director. Under his leadership, at a high school in Southwest Houston, the team was able to win two district titles and the Texas Charter School State Championship. Continuing, during an interview, Lorenzo stated that he has always had a fascination for entrepreneurship. Accordingly, in April of 2014, he started his own businesses, Katy Ballerz, which is a year-round youth development basketball team. This venture came out of a desire to want to work with his own children. He remembers previously when he was coaching at the high school, that he was so consumed with his work; that he was unable to spend the quality time with his own children. So with the program that he established, he was able to do that as well as assist with other children in the area. He created a team that catered to the age bracket of his nephew first and then another to accommodate the age of his own son. So within those efforts, two teams were birthed: Katy Ballerz and LOJO’s Elite Basketball. He is also in the developmental stages of establishing a girls basketball team. He informed that he is very excited about the future of his businesses. Currently, he is in the process of hosting a summer camp, LOJO’s Elite Basketball Camp. The camp will provide campers with basic fundamentals in: shooting, passing, dribbling, defense, footwork, rebounding, movement and screening. It is in partnership with the Living Word Church of the Nazarene. LOJO’s Elite Basketball Camp will begin, June 22 and continue through the 25. The times are: Monday, from 8:30 to 12:00pm and Tuesday through Thursday from 9:00am to 12:00pm. It is open for boys and girls ages 6-11 and grades 1-5. Each camper will receive a T-shirt, wrist band, cinch bag and lunch will be served daily. The camp is limited to 50 children. The cost is $80 per camper and $65 per sibling. BEAR... BE A Resource for CPS Kids is a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring dignity and hope to abused and neglected children involved in Child Protective Services. Founded in 1997, the organization’s mission has remained the same, to offer hope and help for the abused and neglected children of Harris County and the caseworkers who protect them. Each year approximately 17,000 children are involved with Child Protective Services (CPS) in Harris County. Unfortunately, more than 1,000 of these children are removed from their homes under emergency conditions. Some of the children removed from their homes are without shoes or clothes, while some babies are found wearing only soiled diapers. When these kids are placed in foster care, the small stipend provided by the County may not cover all the child’s expenses. Often times expenses such as school supplies, “extras” such as holiday gifts and funds to provide transitional items as youth graduate from high school and begin their journey outside of CPS care are a luxury some families cannot afford. www.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a longtime advocate and fighter for Doctor’s Hospital and the citizens its serves recently announced that Doctor’s Hospital, with the current assault on the Affordable Care Act, will remain open to serve its community. Texas has the largest uninsured population in the country - 24.6% of Texans do not have health care coverage. Doctors Hospital Tidwell is a 117 bed acute-care hospital
committed to providing continuous quality healthcare services to over 500,000 residents in the medicallyunderserved communities of North Houston. The Doctor’s Hospital provides a broad range of primary care and specialty services through a qualified staff of over 200 physicians and 600 healthcare professionals. State Rep. Senfronia Thompson passed her first bill as a freshman lawmaker in 1973 with a measure that was designed to make it safer for blind people to cross the streets in Texas. It was a tiny first step on a historic journey for a state legislator who’s probably guided more legislation successfully through the Capitol’s west wing than any other Texas House member in history. Thompson - a Houston Democrat who practices law when she’s not making it - carried 48 more bills across the finish line during the regular session in 2015. Her closest House rival in that department passed
31 measures during the biennial gathering that ended earlier this month. A Capitol Inside analysis of state records shows that Thompson served as the chief House author or sponsor on 381 measures that have either become law or were vetoed or remain in legislative purgatory on Governor Greg Abbott’s desk. Thompson has shepherded more legislation successfully than any other state representative here in the past half-century if she isn’t the all-time leader in the respect. But Thompson isn’t the only Texas lawmaker who’s been enjoying unprecedented success in terms of production on the legislation assembly line. State Senator Judith Zaffirini appeared to be breaking her
own record with each bill that she passed this year in an upper chamber where she’s had the lead role on 863 successful pieces of legislation during a Senate career that spans almost three decades. Democrat Ken Armbrister had set the Senate bar at a record level before stepping down from the upper chamber in early 2007 after 20 years on the job there. Armbrister - one of the last relatively conservative rural Democrats in an arena where that species is now extinct - passed more than 80 bills on average in 10 bienniums in a Senate where that’s still the record rate for the past 50 years if not longer. According to state statistics that vary slightly in different parts of

The first official service was held December 31, 2013. “We were blessed to finally lease a building in December 2013 and now that same building has been purchased by Walking In The Light Ministries!” This ministry helps people from every race and walk of life by teaching the word of God. We are established within a community that is poverty stricken and we have been given the opportunity to assist with the resources that we have in the following areas: family counseling,
drug addiction, hunger and spiritual guidance. We assist the Community in the following areas: 1. Family Counseling- in areas of domestic abuse, depression, 2. Women and Men Assistance Resources 3. Alcoholic Anonymous “AA” Meetings every Thursday at 7:00pm. 4. Drug Offender Classes Held and Taught by Pastor White (Certified Licensed) 5. Drug Recovery Assistance Program Resources 6. Food Pantry --Pending Status This ministry helps people from every race and walk of life by teaching the word of God. Some of them are dealing with drug addictions, family member loss, nonproductive relationships, teen pregnancy and communication between family members, job loss and so many other areas of daily life situations.

Lone Star College-North Harris has recently named Dr. James Good as the dean of the social and behavioral sciences, business, and economics division. In his new position, Dr. Good will provide positive leadership regarding academic personnel, curricular, and budgetary decisions that further the academic mission of the institution in its service to the community. “I am honored to serve as dean of the social and behavioral sciences, business, and economics division at LSC-North Harris,” said Good. “The division is full of talented, hard-working professionals who are dedicated to the success of our students.” With over 20 years of teaching experience, Dr. Good has spent 13 of them as a professor of history at LSC-North Harris. He also has served as chair of the department of social sciences for the past nine years. An author of two books and numerous journal articles, Dr. Good is a recipient of the Faculty Excellence Award (2007) and the Published Writing Award (2005, 2006 and 2007). He also serves on the LSC-North Harris Honors Council, the LSC Council for International Studies, as chair of the LSC-North Harris International Studies Committee, and as the leader of the recently created Civic Engagement Student Forum Initiative. “Dr. Good is going to be a great addition to leading this already successful division,” said Steve Kolar, LSC-North Harris vice president of instruction. “Dr. Good’s talents and dedication makes him a true asset to the college, and I look forward to seeing his continued progress in the future.”
ACADEMIC AND BEHAVIOR CENTER STUDENT OVERCOMES OBSTACLES TO GAIN DIPLOMA At 6 foot 7, Academic and Behavior Center West student Andre Pierson is imposing in his graduation cap and gown. Upon greeting Andre, his temperate handshake is not overbearing. No one would suspect that a year ago he had a self-destructive temper that could set a classroom whirling. A team that includes a behavior specialist, a counselor, a teacher, principal and mentor devised an individualized learning plan to help Andre deal with his anxiety and anger at the alternative school run by Harris County Department of Education. His graduation from ABC West and his home high school in Fort Bend Independent School District signals a new chapter in his life. “It’s not the school that changed me,” said Andre. “It was my choice. But they helped me look back at the bad things I did. I realize now when to stop and how to keep my anger under control and contained. It feels good, really good. It feels like I’m not a freak actually.” Principal Victor Keys points to Andre as a success story for the school year. However, there are many more like him who are gaining behavior mechanisms to help them be successful in society. This year the school served 90 students from 10 area school districts, including a charter school. Students at ABC West are referred by their home school districts. The districts contract with Harris County Department of Education to work with their students through a low student-to-teacher ratio. Academic and
PAULA & ANDRE PIERSON behavioral programs are tailored to meet the needs of the individual student. The goal is for the student to return to their home school. This month, Andre will shine his size 17 loafers and don another cap and gown at his home school district and walk with his fellow classmates at Willowridge High School in Fort Bend Independent School District. Mom Paula Pierson is proud, to say the least. “It means a lot to me because I get to see him graduate after I thought that he wasn’t,” he said. “To me him coming here was the best thing that could have happened. After he came here I could sleep at night.” Keys credits Andre’s mom for working with the team to help him learn to express himself in constructive ways. This spring Andre gained his driver’s
license, a feat that was both scary but liberating, he said. Through the year he worked through the academic requirements to graduate but also gained workforce experience to master social skills through organizations like Goodwill. Principal Keys said the school works with the Department of Rehabilitative Services. The agency is positive about finding Andre a full-time job in the next few months. “I would like to work in a movie theater,” he said. Andre subtly chuckles at the prospect of getting to see free movies and eat popcorn. “I feel free,” said Andre, citing his ability to control his emotions and deal with stress. “I just want a job and start over now as a man instead of a teen.” About Harris County Department of Education: HCDE provides education services to the general public and 25 school districts throughout Harris County and beyond. Services include adult education, programs to promote safe schools, after-school programs, Head Start, therapy services, professional development for educators, alternative certification for principals and teachers, and special schools. It is an honor to congratulate all high school graduates in the Thirtieth Congressional District for successfully completing your high school education. It is a significant achievement in your life, and it represents another step in your quest for knowledge. I am certain that your families and your teachers are extremely proud. Many of you will continue your studies in our nation’s colleges and universities. Some will become members of our military service, while others will pursue training that will provide you with skills that are so desperately needed in our society. Whatever the path you have chosen, I urge all of our graduates to make the search for knowledge a lifetime quest. Never give up on your dreams, even during times of difficulty and despair. Success will always be within your grasp. As students, you have developed great minds and determined wills. I urge you to be relentless in the pursuit of those things that have captivated your interests and your energies. Continue to conceive new inventions, and develop new ideas that will help mold our world, and the lives of people who live in it. Our cities, our states, our nation and our world are in great need of your talent, your compassion, your determination, your ingenuity and your commitment to creating a better society. In years to come, you will be the leaders in our society, responsible for making decisions that will affect the lives of others. The teachers and administrators in your school have invested in you because they know that the future will be determined by decisions that you make. I believe that they are correct, and I have no doubt that your accomplishments will be great! This is also a special time for members of your family who have loved and guided you through this phase of your life. I can imagine the great sense of pride they share in your accomplishments. I experienced the same sense of pride when my son and grandsons graduated from high school. I was excited about their futures and looked forward to the many milestones they had yet to experience. You must continue your search for academic and personal excellence. Be passionate about your beliefs and your work. Use sound judgment as you interact with others, and make certain that you contribute your special talents to improving our society. TX-11
