The division trains and prepares teacher and principal candidates for state of Texas certification through classroom and online settings. Williams-Ledet has 29 years of experience in education. She earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education and Spanish from the University of Houston and gained her master’s and doctorate degrees in education administration from Texas Southern University. Her expertise in language immersion led her to serve as elementary principal of a language immersion charter school, which she helped found as one of the school’s principal writers. Prior to opening the school, she was a 27-year employee for Houston Independent School District where she served as assistant principal, principal, bilingual supervisor, teacher development specialist and bilingual teacher. upcoming elections, many of us cannot wait to cast our ballots in both the local and presidential elections. Many individuals who have been convicted of a felony are under the impression that their voice will never be heard because they do not have the right to vote. This is actually a common misconception among felons, in Texas felons do have a right to vote once they have completed their incarceration, parole, or probation term. When is a Convicted Felon able to Vote? Incarceration: If a felon has been convicted of a crime and is currently incarcerated he does not have the right to vote, unless that person is awaiting an appeal. For instance, if a person is convicted of aggravated robbery and awaiting appeal, they still have the right to vote. If all the appeals have been exhausted and they are incarcerated, they lose the right to vote and regain it once they have completed their term of incarceration and/or parole. Parole: If an individual is currently on parole for a felony conviction, that person will not be able to vote until they have completed their parole. Deferred Adjudication/ Probation: If a convicted felon is sentenced to probation as their punishment, they do not have the right to vote until they have completed probation. Deferred adjudication is not considered a final conviction, so an individual that is on felony deferred adjudication still retains their right to vote. Do Vice Presidents Really Matter?

t first glance, the question: Do vice-presidential debates really matter seems ridiculously easy to answer, a resounding no. In VP debates between 1976 and 2008 as measured by Gallup polling, VP debates have made absolutely no difference in boosting the fortunes of the presidential standard bearer. The debates have been seemingly so inconsequential that it took decades since the first vice presidential debate to get any real public attention. The big breakthrough finally came in 2008 in the VP debate between GOP VP contender Sarah Palin and Democratic VP contender Joe Biden when nearly 70 million viewers tuned in. The mass interest in the debate had probably more to do with the historic candidacy of then presidential candidate Obama who if elected would become the first African-American president, and the unorthodox, even kooky candidacy, to many of Palin. Certainly GOP VP contender, Mike Pence and Democratic VP contender, Tim Kaine aren’t saddled with the near historic high negatives of Trump and Clinton, and the mass of hits that both have taken for taxes, foundations, emails, obnoxious digs at each other’s supporters. So Pence and Kaine really do have much to talk about and much to defend and more importantly, put the best face possible, on Trump and Clinton. They’ll get a good viewing
crowd to see what they have to say about their leaders. But beyond a VP debate, that still leaves the dangling question whether VPs really do count for much in the larger political equation. Yes and no. No in the sense that voters don’t vote for VPs they vote for presidents first and foremost. Most know that a VP does not make policy, if lucky maybe consulted on a policy question, and certainly does almost nothing to implement it. It’s not exactly a ceremonial position but other than stepping in in the event of a catastrophic illness or death of a president, it’s not far from that. However, the vice presidency does have a lot of value in other places going back to the 1960 election. That year John F. Kennedy picked Lyndon Johnson in 1960 as his running mate. Kennedy was a moderate, wealthy, erudite, Massachusetts senator who needed the southerner Johnson to assure the popular and electoral votes of the South. Since then presidential candidates have picked carefully their running mates for balance on gender, region, and age, and in the case of Pence, temperament value in wild contrast to the off the rail, shoot from the lip, Trump. In the case of Kaine, gender, age, and trust value in relation to the horrible’ly deep public perception of Clinton as everything from a chronic liar to simply untrustworthy. Trump and Clinton had to have VPs that had few negatives, solid party insider status and ties, were fairly young, and as an added boost seen as good governors and good administrators. The youth and good administrative skills factors can’t be minimizedsince Clinton and Trump

are at or near age 70, and would be nearing 80 if they got two terms in the Oval Office. If there was a health challenge to either one in office, voters would want assurance that a vice president would be able to hit the ground running at the top if that happened. Neither Pence or Kaine will add anything to rallying and mobilizing Trump and Clinton’s core base, or are needed in the lock down GOP and Democratic vote states. But there’s the independents. They now make up more than forty percent of the general electorate. This is a historic high. Trump and Clinton engender towering doubt and skepticism among a big swatch of them, they could be the X factor in a close vote in the half dozen must win swing states that will decide the election. Here’s where Pence and Kaine could help, sans their negatives, and possessing sound administrative skills, are undoubtedly major selling points with many independents. Kaine and Pence will spend a lot, if not most, of their remaining days on the campaign trail, in those swing states wooing, courting, and talking rationally about the tax, trade, and job creation policies that Trump and Clinton are pitching to the independents and waverers. Prairie View A&M student and soccer player, Brooke Merino, went to social media and posted a picture of herself in “Blackface” accompanied with the caption “When you just tryna fit in at your HBCU”. As expected, the backlash from the PVAMU family was harsh and swift. University President, Dr. George C. Wright also responded to the issue with a statement on the university’s website. To some, Dr. Wright’s statement was not strong enough. I tend to disagree. Let me tell you why: I know I’m about to ruffle a lot of feathers with what I’m about to say about this young lady, and as always I’m open for discussion and/ or debate. I’m a ‘50s Baby Boomer and I’m as pro-black as they come, but I don’t think that PVAMU should be like everybody else who kicks students out of college for the dumb shit they do. If that were the case, 90% of us would have been tossed out. PVAMU (in my opinion) should take the lead and offer this young lady a course in cultural sensitivity training. I know many of you will probably throw up in your mouths reading this, but what type of statement would we send to the rest of the world if we forgave her for what she did and offered her some guidance. She made a stupid mistake and she’ll pay for it the rest of her life, but she attended our university and represented our school. This is STILL someone’s child and she (like every other kid who did something stupid) deserves a chance to fix it and make amends for it. It’s just time to change the course of race-relations in America, why not start at PVAMU? Not many will agree with me, and that’s okay, but I’ve been a high school teacher for the past 13 years and some of
things that African-American kids do and say should be awarded with expulsion too, but to me that’s not even an option. We have to save our kids, no matter what color or race they are. If we don’t, the pattern will just continue. I know and I’ve seen what other universities have done in instances like this, especially at PWIs, but I feel that PVAMU should set trends and not follow them. I don’t look at this young lady as a “White girl”; I’m looking at her as PVAMU student. If PV Nation truly cared about OUR students, they would too, no matter what color they are... BLACK PEOPLE WAKE UP! DOMESTIC VIOLENCE HURTS AND KILLS!!
T
he Department of Justice defines domestic violence as a, “pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner. Domestic violence can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person. This includes any behaviors that intimidate, manipulate, humiliate, isolate, frighten, terrorize, coerce, threaten, blame, hurt, injure, or wound someone.” I decided to present this particular topic because it is one that heavily impacts the African-American community. Domestic violence is not just a vice that has only now begun, but it is one that has invaded our culture for generations. This is not to state that other races and cultures have not had the same problems and issues to exist within their society. However, African-American News&Issues is a publication that thrives off of highlighting current and historical realities that affect our community. Therefore, when I present a topic it is geared towards empowering and/or educating Black folks on issues that relate to our community. Feminista Jones reported in an article in Time Magazine a couple years ago that, “Domestic and intimate partner violence (DV/IPV) is a ‘family secret’ in our Black communities.” In her article she gave statistics and identified the problem as it relates to the African-American woman. She informed that, “According to the National Coalition against Domestic Violence, an estimated 1.3 million American women experience DV/IPV each year. Women make up 85% of the victims of DV/IPV. Despite this, most cases are never reported to the police and most women are victimized
by people they know.” She continued, “And for Black women, it’s an even bigger problem: Black women are almost three times more likely to experience death as a result of DV/IPV than White women. And while Black women only make up 8% of the population, 22% of homicides that result from DV/ IPV happen to Black Women and 29% of all victimized women, making it one of the leading causes of death for Black women ages 15 to 35.” It is understood that Black women suffer greatly from domestic violence, but we must realize that this is a several-headed dragon. Because there are men that are victims of domestic violence as well, but in many cases pride and testosterone plays a major part in it going underreported. So we have to look at this element from several different angles. While I am on the subject I think that it’s safe to state that there are many reasons and excuses that a person may give for staying in an abusive relationship. By the same token, I’m sure that there are many people who believe they have viable cause to inflict abuse on someone, for one reason or another. Be that as it may, just because there are excuses does not make it right and does not make it healthy. For years, women have remained in abusive relationships because perhaps the aggressor was the sole provider and they felt they had no other way to turn so they chose to stay in the situation. Some aggressors may say that they exemplify these deeds due to being provoked, feelings of being overwhelmed and alcohol and drugs may even be to blame in some cases. But, the thing that bothers me the most about this situation is the affect that it places on the future of our community. I state this because anything involving domestic relates to the home environment.
As it is, it is in the home that children are first taught and instilled the morals and values of how they will view and react to the world. As such, it is a proven fact that whatever children see displayed in their home will most likely be repeated in their adulthood; if some type of empowerment or awakening transition does not take place in their own mind’s before they reach the full level of maturity. Young boys who grow up in a household and see first-hand abuse by male examples, often have a tendency to mature and exhibit the same behavior. On the other hand, young girls who grow up and see abuse around them perceive this as a way of life and in some cases a display of love. We MUST Understand that whatever you become accustomed to as a child, dictates a certain level of normalcy for how you will live as an adult. Therefore, these actions create a chain reaction which ultimately seeps over into society. As a result, many of our young men get caught up in the criminal justice and many women are physically, emotionally, socially and mentally abused. Depending on the severity of some of these cases, it has a tendency to stagnate the affected individuals from becoming positive models into everyday society. Concluding, this is a subject that I could go on and on about. Yet, space will not allow me to present every single aspect of this domestic violence issue and how it so dangerously affects our communities. Hence, I will close by stating that, it is vital that parents and guardians guard and protect our children from the displays that are presented in front of them; because the future of our community depends on it. Domestic violence not only hurts our communities but it kills the future potential of our upcoming generations. TX-3

aid until after critical minutes past. That gap has stirred questions about why he was left in the street, motionless, unarmed and seemingly no threat. So far in 2016, 201 African-Americans have been shot dead by police. Case after case like Crutcher’s and Brown’s happen daily in communities around the country with the same deadly results – a fact that McLaughlin wants addressed by leaders and police in urban and rural jurisdictions. The cases are unlike the case with the alleged New York Terrorist Ahmad Khan Rahami. He is the suspect in the bombings in New York and New Jersey that injured 29 people. He was given aid and put in an ambulance after a fierce gun battle with police. “If that works for an alleged terrorist – why doesn’t that same principle apply when police stop any individual in the street?’’ McLaughlin said. “He’s (the alleged terrorist) not dead, but and our unarmed civilians are shot dead and they were not shooting at anybody.” Police Killings/Treatment Damages President’s 21st Century Policing Objectives

McLaughlin, a civil rights attorney and professor at Pace Law School in New York City said in an exclusive interview with AfricanAmerican News&Issues. “Change is needed and needed now. Citizens are neglected because in many of these cases you see no ambulance at the scene or that shows up in a timely fashion to provide medical aid and assistance to these citizens.” Randolph M. McLaughlin, a graduate of Columbia College and Harvard Law School, became Of Counsel to Newman Ferrara LLP in September 2011. Professor McLaughlin is a faculty member at Pace University School of Law, where he teaches courses focusing on civil rights, litigation, labor law, voting rights, civil procedure, and New York practice, and wants to change the current culture of letting these people suffer and bleed out alone. Calls for Immediate First-Responder Help/Medical Attention for Police Shooting Victims McLaughlin is seeking to raise national awareness with civil rights organizations, justice groups and community organizers of the problem in Black communities and work to get police policies changed in cities and counties nationwide. He hopes to accomplish the kinds of changes that reflect medical aid urgency, respect for human life and a sensitivity to families and communities affected and impacted by these type of shootings. In many instances, African-Americans and others shot by police have been treated with less compassion and denied quick response or first-responder help especially when compared to an alleged terrorist in New York who was shooting at cops, had a gun and was given aid right after the shooting. After a shooting, the first 4 to 8 minutes are critical saving a person’s life, according to the latest medical response time statistics. Survival chances decrease dramatically after that time. “What we are seeing in many of these videos is simple- that the cops are doing absolutely nothing for these guys who they shoot down,” he said. “They are not rendering immediate aid or making any particular calls for help. They just let them sit there and that’s not right by any standard.” According to McLaughlin, too many shot by police are left to die without dignity, alone and in disgrace. In many cases, emergency vehicles are not present and are called well after the shooting occur. In Ferguson, Missouri, Michael Brown was on the ground in Ferguson after being shot for hours before any aid was called or provided. In Tulsa, Oklahoma, Terrence Crutcher, 40, was killed after his vehicle stalled in the middle of a Tulsa street. Video shows him lying on the ground, as the officers stand nearby, but no one provides TX- 4
The current reports fly in the face of the President Barack Obama’s 2015 Task Force findings on 21st Century Policing. In that report, objectives suggest that police department adopt better policies that lead to improved relations with communities and neighborhoods. In that report, recommendations called for law enforcement to build relationships with key community institutions such as churches, social service agencies, businesses and schools. It also called for better training that would reduce perceptions about racial profiling, excessive use of force and other practices that impact civil rights that cause negative reactions from people living in challenged communities – something that allowing a person shot by police to die in the street without prompt medical care does not do. In Section 4.4 of the task force report, it calls for the support and practice of policing that reflects the values of protection and promotion of dignity of all, especially the most vulnerable. Again – allowing a person to lie bleeding out does not show compassion or build the kind of trust for police the report suggests is needed to improve police images within the community. In the same context, the report suggests the key to a positive culture of policing starts when cops develop a “Hippocratic Oath for Policing”: Do No Harm and preventive approach to policing neighborhoods, according to David Kennedy, professor, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, for the President’s Task Force. According to Kennedy, this approach sets goals to avoid use of force if at all possible, even when it is allowed by law or policy. Also, using respectful language that is not offensive and does not escalate a situation while understanding the reality of profiling and the impacts of mass incarceration and profiling on building positive perceptions about police and nurturing that trust. The ultimate goal of the initiative would be for officers to be true guardians of human and constitutional rights. Even US Justice Department Director Loretta Lynch is monitoring community policing initiatives around the country, but it appears relationships continue to be strained and distrust for police rising as police shootings continue to happen at an alarming rate. “… Our country has recently witnessed a series of deeply distressing events in cities experiencing a breakdown in trust between law enforcement officers and the citizens we serve. Each new tragedy has weighed heavily on our hearts and put a spotlight on deeply-rooted issues we are still confronting as a nation.,” she said in June 2015 speaking about Community Policing at Birmingham at their Birmingham Civil Rights Institute in Birmingham, AL. “…But in order to keep healing the rifts that divide us, we must continue to work together, to be constructive and assume good faith on all sides and to seek out new ideas and fresh approaches. Restoring essential trust where it has eroded is one of my top priorities.” Birmingham is one of six pilot sites for the national initiative for building community trust and justice. The initiative is a long-term effort to foster lasting ties and enduring trust between law enforcement officials and the citizens they serve. National and Local Election Vote Fraud Presented to the Dallas County Commissioners Ct by Richard P. Sheridan, P.E., N.Y. – 13 Year Activist
Civil rights leader Democrat U.S. Rep. John Lewis is calling for federal protection at polling locations. He believes the election can be stolen on election day. Lewis’ fellow Democrat Georgia Rep. Hank Johnson may introduce bill intended to protect the November election. The Elections Infrastructure and Security Promotion Act of 2016 would compel the Dept. of Homeland Security to designate voting systems as critical infrastructures. The Election Integrity Act would regulate the voting machines that states can purchase. “We must work to reduce the vulnerability of crucial voting systems, protect the security and integrity of our election process, and ensure all Americans have the opportunity to vote.” U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson. Presidential candidate Donald Trump has stated repeatedly that he is very concerned about a possible rigged election. Maybe the following are good reasons for Trump’s concern. Tens of thousands of fake ballot slips have been found with votes for Hillary Clinton and other Democrats. These pre-marked ballots were found recently in an official Franklin County building. Ohio is a perennial swing state in presidential elections. In 2004 John Kerry “lost” to George W. Bush by electronic vote fraud. The CEO of Diebold, a major manufacturer of voting machines, was a close friend of Bush, and he made sure that the Diebold machines were rigged to give Bush Ohio, and the presidency. Hillary Clinton has spent less time and money in Ohio, and it has “appeared” that Trump will carry this crucial state. However, the fake ballots could definitely change the outcome of the Ohio election, and even give Hillary the presidency, as it did for Bush. A group of Princeton University professors has warned, “We are in a collision course between the technology we use in elections, and the reality of politically motivated cyber-attacks.” They state that we must go back to the way elections were once done when the vote totals in each polling place are announced soon after the poll closes at the polling place, to all observers…poll workers, party challengers, any citizen that’s observing the closing of the polls. CELEBRATING FAMILY & FRIENDS DAY W/
CHRIST DELIVERANCE HOLINESS CHURCH

Recently, Christ Deliverance Holiness Church located at 11311 Bethnal Green Dr., 77066, under the leadership of Elder Rodney C. Pitre held their Family and Friends Day Service. The grand celebration was held at the Heart of Faith Worship Center which rests at 12275 Homestead Rd., 77050. The theme of the day was, “Greater Love Has No One Than This”. Family, friends, ministers, evangelists, missionaries, pastors and a gallery of others congregated to join in on this spiritual uplifting and soul-stirring experience. Evangelist Doris McMillon served as the Mistress of Ceremony. Pastor Rodney Pitre initiated the worship experience by yielding the invocation. Afterwards, Deacon William Youngblood continued with devotion, followed by a sanctified and upbeat Praise and Worship segment by the Praise Team. Sis. Tamera Small offered a heartfelt welcome to all who were in attendance. The Christ Deliverance Holiness Choir set the tone for an upbeat service as they rendered melodies of praise to the Everlasting Father. Then, Lady Linda T. Pitre, delivered a beautiful and powerful short talk on Family and Friends which resonated with all of the attendees in regards to the true meaning of the service. A brief intermission for giving unto the Lord and a tally of invited guests was performed. Evangelist Doris McMillon was awarded for her outstanding contributions and work in acquiring the most guests for the celebration. The gracious and humbled Elder Pitre, returned to the podium to introduce the guest speaker of the day. Pastor Cedric W. Robbins of New Bright Star Missionary Baptist Church took stage and began his sermonic message. He expounded on St. Matthew 6:9-13 which entails the “Model Prayer” that Jesus Christ left on record for believers’ reference. Scripture says, “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is

the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.” Pastor Robbins tactfully correlated the model prayer into a message that coincided with the gathering of family and friends. He used, “A Call to Prayer”, as a theme. As he encouraged the congregation to secure an intimate relationship with God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit; he also explained the importance of adoring and petitioning God through prayer and worship. Pastor Robbins said, “When you pray, it lets God know that you have the Holy Spirit, which causes you to repent.” He also explained that the only way to worship God is to look up. Throughout his very informative message, he presented many pertinent details as it relates to having an active prayer life as a believer in Christ. All this before gearing up his vocals to head towards a hill called, “Calvary”, where he introduced, Jesus Christ the Savior of the World. By the time Pastor Robbins reached his climax, parishioners were standing on their feet throughout the sanctuary; waving holy hands, uttering hefty “Amen’s” and encouraging him to go higher and higher, which he did not hesitate to do. After he concluded, the appeal to discipleship was offered and attendees gathered around for prayer. Final remarks and benediction were given by Pastor Rodney Pitre. Ultimately, this awesome Family and Friends Day celebration was a success, as was demonstrated by smiles, hugs and handshakes as attendees joyfully exited to the fellowship hall.

He attended Booker T. Washington High School and was a part of the class of 1955.On August 5, he transitioned back to his eternal home. Recently, a celebration was held by family and friends to commemorate his life at the Living Word Fellowship Church, located at 7350 West TC Jester Blvd. 77088, under the leadership of Pastor Paul Cannings, PhD. Pastor Duane Lawrence, officiated the ceremony. Tributes from classmates, family and friends were offered and musical selections were rendered by Eleanor Lee. The family of Mr. Hayes expressed their sentiments by rendering the following statement. “We lost a wonderful man who can never be replaced!”

Meet Joanna Laufer
HOUSTON – A little over five years ago, Joanna Laufer relocated from Dallas to Houston. Undoubtedly at that time, she had no idea of where this 200-mile transition would lead her. With a background in commercial insurance, real estate transactions, construction and a hint of property management; Laufer would soon find that her knowledge and experience would serve as a great asset to one of Houston’s most historical African-American communities, Acres Homes. Read on to see how one petite “White girl”, by her own admission, would serve to become an influential ornament in the heart of the, “44”. Upon arriving in Houston, Laufer worked as a Commercial Insurance agent. While doing so, she was approached by one of her clients in regards to managing a property that he owned located on Gulf Bank. This lot was home to a small community of townhomes. She naively accepted the opportunity, unaware of the task that was set before her. When Laufer made her debut to White Oak, she immediately knocked on everyone’s doors and gathered all of the residents out on a Friday evening to introduce herself and to inform them of her goals for the property. She soon found that residents had been living
in a horrendous situation. Amongst many problems, at the forefront was the fact that the City of Houston had disconnected their water supply. Unfortunately, the entire complex had been without running water for over three months. Many of them were transporting water from across the street in tanks just to take baths and have a source of water. She was terrified after hearing this and ensured them all that she would have each of their water on the very next day. During our interview Laufer shared that many of the residents were reluctant to trust her because of their past experiences. However, she kept true to her word and phoned a plumber friend of hers to come out and do an emergency hook-up, which he did. The following day (Sunday), she was bombarded with calls from the residents informing her of their distress. While their water had been successfully restored, many of the homes were flooding. The water had been off so long that running water from second-floor units had been left on and were permeating through the ceilings of the downstairs units. Laufer immediately brought her agenda to a halt and proceeded to the nearest Home Depot. With a water extraction machine, carpet cleaner and gloves in tow, she went to work immediately. She’d already phoned her boss to inform of the dire situation that had occurred. But much to her chagrin, she was told that it could wait until Monday. Laufer refused to let any of the residents suffer anymore than they already had and she spent that night and morning personally scrubbing and cleaning each resident’s home. From that day forward, her
simple act of compassion and concern commanded the respect of all of the residents and she was able to maintain a good relationship with each of her tenants. Despite the fact that Laufer had built a special bond with the residents there, she knew within her heart that she could not work with the owner. Therefore, she decided to move on. Not long afterwards, Laufer found out that she was expecting. Hence she made a decision to take off work for about a year and a half. So when she did return to work, she secured employment with a major construction company. This move enabled her to add to her expertise in the industry of which she had become accustomed to operating in. Accordingly, she was privileged to work with nearly every shopping center owner and property management company in Houston. As luck would have it, Laufer was once again propositioned by a client to come work exclusively for his company. Fred and Dan Nankani, of Nankani Management LLC, had recently purchased the 17-acre shopping center stationed at the corner of Antoine and West Little York. Laufer said, “I felt like the universe was bringing me back to the same area that I had already come to love, so I took it and that was a year ago.” Since that time, there has been a major transformation to this complex.

Lone Star College-Victory Center Getting Involved Changed My Life By Angelica Moreno College can be an amazing experience for anyone. Coming to Lone Star CollegeVictory Center has been a new and exciting adventure. I’m a 24-year-old student who has not been in school for over six years, and going back was scary. I’m a student who struggles with anxiety and depression, and making the decision to go back to school Angelica Moreno was one of the hardest, yet best decisions of my life.
“Coming to the S.A.G.E. meetings has been helping me get out of my comfort zone.” In the beginning, I didn’t know anything about the clubs or programs that LSC-Victory Center had to offer. I was only planning on attending my required classes to get my Associate of Arts degree. But, I learned about a program called Communities in Schools of Houston (CIS). I originally reached out to this program to ask for help with my mental health. An employee from CIS, Amelia de Landa, LMSW, encouraged me to attend a meeting of an organization called Sisters Aspiring for Greatness through Education (S.A.G.E.) to meet other students and get involved in school. I joined S.A.G.E. in spring of 2016. Even though I’m still a shy person, coming to the S.A.G.E. meetings has been helping me get out of my comfort zone. I was even encouraged by two members of S.A.G.E. to apply for workstudy in the Learning Center, another place to interact with students. I also got the opportunity to volunteer for the college in several ways, with one of them being the LSC-Victory Center’s talent
show. I baked homemade cookies to sell and help raise money for Habitat for Humanity, which gave me the opportunity to show off my unique baking skills. This resulted in helping another member of S.A.G.E. get recipes on baked goods for her son, who’s allergic to eggs. I even got lucky enough to attend the LSC-North Harris Women’s Conference. Becoming a member of S.A.G.E. helped me become more active in other school activities. It motivated me to volunteer for the yearly Sylvester Turner Family Day. It inspired me to start promoting kindness to students, such as Kindness Day and Pride Day. In fact, I got the help that I needed through Family Services of Greater Houston, another program that LSC-Victory Center offers, and I am now mentally in a good place. With this in mind, I was able to show my support to other students struggling with a mental illness. For instance, I created a school team to participate in a walk for the National Alliance on Mental Illness. I am proud to be a member of the S.A.G.E. organization at LSC-Victory Center. I am inspired. I am motivated. I am educated. I am me.
A China Trip I Will Never Forget By Melissa Ezekor I turned my airplane mode off on my cell phone and desperately searched for a Wi-Fi connection. Great Wall of China I could not believe Melissa Ezekor I had just landed in China. I wanted to post it on Facebook, but, I did not have any cell service or free internet connection. As I walked through the airport, I remember thinking: I’m a foreigner. I looked around like a drooling kid in a candy store, automatically comparing everything to the United States. There were a lot of similarities and mostly everything had an English translation. The group I traveled with “Lone Star College-China Study Program,” were finally spotted and greeted by Chinese student ambassadors. I did not know how truly impacted or how much I would come to appreciate the glimpse of China’s culture I was given.

The first city was Beijing where we visited the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City and had a seminar about the Chinese language. The part of the Great Wall of China we visited was call Badaling, built in 1505 and restored as a tourist sight in 1957. The wall was a very steep climb, however on the way up, we managed to take photos of the scenery with other tourists. Another amazing sight was the Forbidden City, a Chinese imperial palace from the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) to the end of the Qing dynasty (16441911), where we saw where emperors and their families lived. We also took an intensive language course in Mandarin. The next stop was Hangzhou at Hangzhou Wanxiang Polytechnic. We spent nine days in Hangzhou where we participated in several lectures and workshops. My favorite lectures were China’s Economic Development, The Teaching of Confucius, Laozi and Sunzi and China and United States Relationship. As for the workshops, my favorites were Chinese Calligraphy and Painting, Chinese Martial Art and Paper Cutting Art. We also were able to attend “The Romance of Song Dynasty” show, a breathtaking experience. On the last day in Hangzhou, we said goodbye to our Chinese student ambassadors. Shanghai was our final stop before heading back home to the U.S. We spent two days there and visited the Shanghai History Museum, the Yu Garden and the Oriental TV Tower, the world’s sixth and China’s second-tallest TV and radio tower. We also had a delicious dinner there. I was truly amazed by how I was able to experience China with Lone Star College. This trip enriched my understanding of China’s culture, which included food, visual arts, religion and government. If I was given the chance to go back to China again, I would go in a heartbeat. This was a lifetime experience that I will never forget and will always cherish.
