“LET’S TALK ABOUT SEX, BABY!” Before I Lay it Down... By “Coach” Mark Spivey
When God created Adam, He also decided to make him a “helpmate”. Using my sanctified imagination, I assume that God noticed Adam staring at all of the other animals getting their freak on an watched how he responded by sitting on a rock, his legs crossed, shameful that the male organ he was “blessed” with started to elevate for the first time while observing all of
that animal excitement. Watching lions, tigers, and gorillas mate had ole Adam a little sweaty and all worked up. Enter Eve. Eve was NOT placed in the Garden of Eden to help Adam chop wood, build huts, or hunt for food. If God wanted someone to do that, He would have created Steve. But, this didn’t happen THAT time. (Sorry, gay people). God designed Eve for one thing, that was, to sex Adam up! That wasn’t Eve’s only job, however. She had to be able to make Adam a good sammitch every now and then, too. Ladies, your bodies are designed for pleasuring men. There has been a lot of debate on this, but not tonight.
Your job is to make sho that us men folk aren’t walking around so full of juice that we can’t think straight. It’s not appropriate. As a matter of fact, it’s unhealthy. Ask any gorilla. Plus, having sex should not happen only once month like a menstrual cycle. Who does that? (Insert mental image of 90% of the fellers pointing their fingers at their female counterparts). If your man is having less sex now than he did when he was 10 years old, something is terribly wrong. It’s downright ludicrous. You gotha do better. Fellers, now we all know that the majority of women think that all we ever think about is sex. (End of paragraph). To ensure that our women feel like having sex, there are a few things that we fellers have to do: 1. Make sho that you keep yo
ass in some kind of shape. If you can’t see yo tic-tac while standing upright, yo damn stomach has taken a few inches from your poker. Women notice that. Don’t be saying ISH like “its way up in there like a horse’s” or “it only comes out when you touch it”. We ain’t nodamn horse. Well, some of y’all ain’t. But that’s beside the point. Stay in shape. 2. Don’t expect yo woman to come home after working all day (just like you) and start preparing you a 5-course dinner. That alone will sap half of her sex drive. Help her out. Do like I do. If Julle comes home and cooks dinner, I’ll clean up the kitchen. Now, that in itself doesn’t guarantee that you’ll get some, but at least the dishes will be clean. 3. And finally, if yo wife is not cognizant of the fact that y’all

If you’ve turned on your television lately, you’ve likely seen an ad or two blasting the historic Iran nuclear deal. The reality is, millions are being spent in a lobbying effort to destroy an agreement that has been reached after extensive negotiating and diplomacy between world powers (P5+1) and Iran. Instead of recognizing this global achievement that actually prevents Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, lobbyists would rather destroy any notion of peace. It’s quite simple really, voting against the Iran deal would virtually guarantee that we go to war yet again. Because we -- Blacks and Latinos -- are often on the front lines of battle, we do not want another senseless war. Perhaps it’s time our Senators and members of Congress
listen to us and not the lobbyists. This weekend at my National Action Network rally in Harlem, I urged Black ministers to go to their pulpits and tell their parishioners to call their elected representatives and tell them to vote yes on the Iran nuclear deal. In cities and towns all across this country, young men and women of color sign up for the armed services in very high numbers. Whether it’s out of patriotism and love of country, or it’s for economic reasons and increased opportunities, minorities (and the poor for that matter) join and account for an extensive proportion of our military. They risk their lives; they fight on the ground; and they get killed or lose limbs while their representatives walk comfortably in air conditioned
corridors in Washington, D.C. or back in their home districts. How many Senators and members of Congress do you think have children who are currently serving in the military? The answer is, very few. They must remember that we are their constituents, and not groups like special interest groups and lobbyists, which are pouring in millions in an effort to destroy this agreement. Elected officials, especially Democrats, should keep their base in mind when voting on this globally negotiated Iran deal. They should vote for us, and not for special interests. We do not want another war, we do not want more death and destruction, and we do not want to ship more of our young men and women off into harm’s way.

DEMOCRATS SHUN HILLARY AT THEIR PERIL Earl Ofari Hutchinson Author & Political Analyst
California governor Jerry Brown and Democratic presidential candidate Martin O’Malley have said publicly what a bevy of Democratic party officials have said privately. And that’s that they are worried about, have misgiving about, or are outright hostile to Hillary Clinton as a presidential candidate. This doesn’t even count the legions of Democrats who fervently back Clinton’s Democratic rival Bernie Sanders. Many of them rail harder at Clinton for her alleged pro war, pro Wall Street, and corporate stance, than any of the GOP presidential candidates. They have flatly said that if Clinton is the Democratic nominee they’ll stay home on Election Day. Then there’s Vice President Joe Biden. There’s really only one or two reasons that a sizable number of Democrats are imploring Biden to jump into the presidential race. And that’s because of their open or thinly-camouflaged disdain of Clinton. The other ties back into the first. Either they don’t want or believe that Hillary can win. Or, that she is such damaged goods that she’d be a liability as the party standard bearer and an even bigger liability in the White House. The anti-Clinton animus started long before the non-stop pounding of her by the GOP congressional witch hunters, and a hostile, Clinton-titillating-prone mainstream media. The start point was the 2008 Democratic slug fest between Clinton and then presidential candidate Obama. Clinton’s supposed negatives on race, her personal coolness, sense of Clinton presidential nomination entitlement, and alleged sleazy campaign tactics were turn offs too many Democrats. It didn’t take much for them to leap over her and embrace
Obama when it became plain that he could mount a real challenge to Clinton for the nomination. The quick step to Obama became a stampede among many Democrats after a few primary wins by him. Though Obama buried the hatchet, and appointed her as Secretary of State, it didn’t totally make the anti-Clinton loathing go away. It cropped up again during the Benghazi hearings when Clinton was pretty much left to dangle in the wind by top Democrats who either gave a tepid defense or were silent as the GOP merrily finger-pointed her as the guilty party in the Benghazi assault. This silence or perceived weak kneed failure to hit back hard at the silly and outrageous attacks on Clinton and the Democrats by the Republican National committee, a gaggle of ultra-conservative Super PACS, and the parade of right wing bloggers and websites has plopped Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz squarely on the hot seat. The calls for her to step down are loud. But there’s an irony here. At the same time some Democrats shout for her to take a hike, they also pillory her for allegedly being locked down in the Clinton camp. The damage from the relentless Hillary bashing has been on full display since the summer. Polls supposedly show that her stock with every segment of Democrats has plunged. With the biggest and most worrisome of the drop-offs from women, especially white women. Other polls show that where once she scored a commanding edge over any GOP candidate in a head to head race, she now is edged out by of all people, GOP presidential contenders Donald Trump and Ben Carson. Polls like this have to be taken with the entire salt mine given that they merely reflect the media fed fascination, attention on these two, and the pre-primary expression of perennial, anti-Washington establishment sentiment among voters. 6 ELEMENTS THAT CONTROL THE WORLD
There are six elements that impact and control the world. Religion, media, politics, economics, education and health: RELIGION Religion controls the masses with a system of beliefs that has set standards, morals and values for generation. African-Americans have been taught since leaving the sunny African shores, that obedience, faith and religion go hand in hand in helping control society and shaping order from what would be chaos without it. Religion and its messages from the Bible makes society feel good and feeds the notion that doing good to your fellow man is the highest order of service and makes the world a better place. Our lives, families and generations follow blindly convinced that good living and prosperous giving will lead to eternal bliss and a pass through the pearly gates. Church leaders have a God complex and the willing followers go along with whatever they are told. There comes a point when the masses are no longer able to think for themselves and believe the rants of anyone who’s in a position of authority. We must understand that Religion is political and believers in God are spiritual. There’s a huge difference between the two. Religion is not a bad thing, it is how church leaders, pastors and some have used religious teachings and dogma to control the composition of the government and control the voting, thinking of communities and a country. MEDIA Media is the next most powerful force that controls the world. It has been said that he who controls information controls. The media uses its power in a way to tilt the masses to think, vote, believe, behave and buy the way it wants. The public again does not think for itself, but makes decisions off surveys and poll numbers generated not from fact, but opinion.
From television, to newspapers to social media, information is driving the way you live, what you drive, how you dream and what you do on a daily basis. Some in media work to create and promoted negative images of Blacks. President Obama has been a victim of media that still cannot come to grips with a Black president. Some work hard to criticize, disrespect and find fault in him all to make Black leadership appear indecisive and incompetent We must understand its motive and powers and how it has caused AfricanAmericans to settle for less and underachieve because of its negative images in the media and bad messages to our community. We must understand this power and set a course to march to the beat of our own drummer. POLITICS Politics is the next element that controls the world because of its direct impact on our lives. AfricanAmericans need to understand that all politics is local because that is where we have most of our contact with the system from taxes, to streets, to school board policies to laws governing city and county services and operations. The underbelly of politics is real and can be seen clearly in the battles over the Affordable Health Care Act, the extension of the Farm Bill that cut millions from the food stamp program and the government shutdown that crippled unemployment programs and pensions. Electing good servant leaders who want to truly work the will of the people is the best way we can direct political power and use it to our advantage. When we don’t vote or go to the polls, we allow people to come into power who rape the system, become bourgeois aristocrats that make puppets of you, take away your voice and control every aspect of your life. ECONOMICS Economics is the element that has African-Americans traveling on a new kind of slave ship called dependency. We have left the old paths of support-

ing ourselves, developing our own businesses and shopping in our own neighborhoods. That has contributed to the deterioration of neighborhood from strong Black businesses and bustling business centers to boarded up, rundown ragged structures and talk of how it used to be. We have been convinced to shop at malls and big box stores instead of concentrating on our own community and owning and supporting our own businesses. That loss of economic clout has left us without the ability to set our own course and chart our own destiny. As a people, African-Americans have one of the highest unemployment rates in the country and depend far too heavy on votes in Austin or Congress on reparations, unemployment, SSI or other forms of government assistance to relieve us of our burdens. We must do a better job of supporting our own and that will give us the freedom, ability and power to build and grow businesses and hire our own. EDUCATION Education is another key element that controls the world. AfricanAmericans must understand that education is a game changer and without it, it is hard to compete in this 21st Century economy. What makes it more difficult is more and more African-American children are struggling to find their place and purpose and the education system has not been friendly enough to get the message across that a complete education is far better than dropping out of school or waiting for prince charming or hoping to win the lottery. A small-town girl whose candid conviction and influence were sought for decades by political candidates for local and state office and even the White House, Beulah Ann Shepard, legacy lives on. Shepard, a bold Democrat who moved to Houston from Louisiana nearly 70 years ago, was often called the unofficial “Mayor of Acres Homes”. She loved politics, she loved the process and she loved participating in the process. If you sought political office, you sought her out. She had the power. Her desire to aid the community with programs to train or augment the computer skills of residents and business professionals has been successful through the Beulah Ann Shepard Building — home of the Acres Homes Chamber for Business and Economic Development. A couple of years ago, on one Wednesday, Sept 19, Houston City Council voted unanimously
(with an optional vote from Mayor Annise D. Parker) to rename the Acres’ Home library the Beulah Shepherd-Acres Home Neighborhood Library. Ms. Shepherd, a long-time resident and Democratic Party activist, was a friend and mentor to many of the current council members. According to research, all spoke of her with deep respect, recalling her strong character, commitment to truth, and uncompromising dedication to her community. Ms. Shepherd died on September 11, 2010, the commemoration was as close as possible to the second anniversary of her passing. Houston City Council approved to change the name of the Houston Public Library’s Acres Homes Neighborhood Library to the Beulah Shepard-Acres Homes Neighborhood Library, in memory of community leader Beulah Ann Shepard. The approved renaming follows Mayor Annise
D. Parker proclaiming September 18, 2012, as Beulah Shepard-Acres Homes Neighborhood Library Day in Houston. The Beulah ShepardAcres Homes Neighborhood Library is located at 8501 West Montgomery, 77088, As her legacy lives on, Saturday, September 12, 2015 the life and legacy of Ms. Beulah Ann Shepard was remembered and honored with an unveiling of her portrait and fundraiser benefiting the Houston Public Library’s Beulah Shepard – Acres Homes Neighborhood Library. Proceeds from the event will be used to upgrade and maintain library services and resources that many in the community have come to rely on. With the goal of her daughter, Diane Shepard, to raise $50,000 for the Beulah Shepard – Acres Homes Neighborhood Library the unveiling event was packed with community leaders and elected officials. There was an elegant, but private Meet and Greet Reception prior to the unveiling with celebrities Blair Underwood and James Pickens, Jr. in attendance. Beautiful Jazz sounds were played throughout the ceremony by Michael McCullough and the Carver Jazz Band of George Washington Carver High School, Aldine ISD. Continuing on the Master of Ceremony was Rev. Eric Stephens, invocation was led by
Edwin Deese and the welcome was presented by D’Adrain Stubberfield, Eisenhower High School, FHA Reporter. Reflections of Beaulah Ann Shepard were remembered through the eyes of Kelvin Shepherd. About Beulah Shepard Shepard was born Beulah Ann Raleigh in Plain Dealing, Louisiana on June 14, 1921 to Emmitt and Queen Raleigh. In 1948, she left for Houston, originally to assist her sister with her new baby boy. nity where she became an active member of the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church and a deacon’s wife. Shepard started working for Commissioner E.A. Squatty Lyons in January 1974 as a community aide and worked with him for 25 years. Of that job she said, “This was my delight because I love my community and consider myself a community activist. With a salary of $44,000 a year, car, gas, all expenses paid, that’s not bad at all for a little girl named Beulah Ann from Plain Dealing with a 7th grade education.” She later worked for the State of Texas for Senator John Whitmire’s office before finally retiring. Her hobbies included sightseeing, cooking, traveling, and lobbying for causes. Shepard crossed many political barriers, and made herself heard

about what she believed in and supported many important causes with great passion. She worked on several Democratic campaigns that included John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Hubert Humphrey, Jimmy Carter, Barbara Jordan, Mark White, Mickey Leland, and in 1970, she helped campaign for Houston’s first black city council member, Judson Robinson. She shared her wisdom with public figures at all levels. Local city council members, county officials, state legislators, members of Congress and even several U.S. Presidents sought her advice and counsel. Texas Representative Sylvester Turner commented once that; “Besides her family and church, politics was her life. She had a strong presence, especially in Democratic circles. People knew her from the White House to local

political organizations.” Shepard even became known as the “Mayor” of the Acres Home community. She was instrumental in improving her Acres Homes community. She secured a swimming pool, a neighborhood library and renaming of streets by lobbying the Houston City Council. Shepard was also a member of several organizations including The Congressional Black Caucus, the Harris County Council of Organizations and many more. People would hear her say, “Usually when you see me, I am on a mission. I am going someplace or coming from someplace where I have probably had plenty to say about a subject of great interest to the community. I am not afraid to speak up for what I believe in. You will never be in doubt where I stand on any issue.”
Shepard was also the recipient of the Acres Homes Community Woman of the Year Award (1973), Galilee MBC Service Award (1976), HL&P Influential Women of Houston (1986), the Texas Living Legend Award from the Texas Coalition of Black Democrats (1987) and Community Affairs Award from the State Legislature (1991). Shepard was 89 years old when she passed away on September 11, 2010. She dedicated her life to speaking up for what she believed in and always looked out for the best interest of her Acres Homes community. About the Beulah Shepard-Acres Home Neighborhood Library The Acres Homes community was developed in the early 1940’s in northwest Houston and was

named for its one-acre home sites. As the area grew, the Houston Public Library acquired property on West Montgomery Road to add a library for the community. The architectural firm of Haywood, Jordan, McCowan Inc. designed the light-filled building featuring natural materials. The Acres Homes Neighborhood Library opened on December 7, 1976. The location was renamed to Beulah Shepard-Acres Homes Neighborhood Library on September 19, 2012 in memory of community leader Beulah Shepard. A FINAL FAREWELL
MELVIN MOSLEY 1930 - 2015
HOUSTON - Family, friends, community leaders, elected officials and those who desired to pay homage to the late husband of community activist; Mrs. Ruby Mosley did so with a heartfelt presence. The family gathered with tears and pride and said final farewell to the Veteran, Mr. Melvin Mosley. Mr. Mosley, age 85, heard the Masters call and answered his Heavenly Father’s voice on Sunday night, September 6, 2015, at a local hospital. On a hot summer’s day, July 5, 1930 to the union of Roscoe and Veda Mae Mosley, a bouncing baby boy was born and they named him, Melvin. Melvin, was the baby of the Mosley clan and he was loved and adored by his siblings. Following the death of his parents, the children’s journey continued from New York through East Texas and finally to Houston. Melvin enlisted into the United States Army on March 1, 1952 and received an Honorable Discharge from Active Duty on February 27, 1954. He was employed as a truck driver for many years and his last tenure of employment was South Coast Supply where he retired from. Melvin’s life really began to sparkle when he met and married the love of his life, Ms. Ruby Lee Sanders on March 16, 1962. After years of membership at Galilee Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor D. S. Bailey, he later joined Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor C. O. Randle. Words of encouragement were
expressed and songs of spiritual uplifting created the atmosphere. From Congresswoman Lee, Senator Whitmire, State Rep. Sylvester Turner, Constable Alan Rosen, Mayor Pro-Tem Jerry Davis and Councilmember Brenda Stardig, reverence was seen at its best. “Mrs. Mosley and the family, do not let your hearts be troubled, Trust in God” said Constable Rosen. “We have all gathered to share in your sorrow, and to also celebrate the life of your husband of 53 years,” added Senator Whitmire. Not a dry eye in the Church as Mrs. Grant sung “His Eye is on the Sparrow” and expressed kind words from the Grant Family. Ministers from all over the community who knew Mr. Mosley shared the consistent compliment “He always had a smile on his face”. Pastor Oliver of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church then encouraged the family from the Pulpit. He reiterated the life of Mr. Mosley and encouraged everyone to show honor at their seat as the Church was filled with applauds and a standing ovation for the life of Mr. Melvin Mosley. Mrs. Mosley who have been a pillar, and one of the strong rocks in the Acres Homes Community always encourages that members of the community should, “take time and have a voice in making decisions for yourselves and stop letting other people decide for you.” “Know who you are voting for and find out something about them,” she admonished. Mrs. Mosley always concludes by strongly emphasizing that, “there are times for a change and there are times not to make a change.” Mrs. Mosley, affectionately called “Mayor of Acres Homes,” for her commitment and services to Acres Homes by renaming the Multi-Service center’s auditorium in her honor. A long-time community leader and advocate, Mosley played a key role in the design and building of the multi-service
center, the Acres Homes Public Library and the Houston Police Department command station. She serves on the multi-service center’s advisory council and Police Positive Interaction Program (PIP) Board. In her years of community leadership, she advocated for services for the seniors and children of the Cuny Homes Housing Development, where she helped establish a school that was eventually named in her honor. In her early advocacy years, she worked to provide water, sewer and other city services in low-density areas of Houston. Because of her leadership and commitment to the community, the rain of support gathered on this day to show thankfulness and honor to Mr. Mosley. “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning” – Constable Rosen ended. In addition, in honor of Mr. Melvin Mosley’s service to the United States Army, Congresswoman Lee presented a flag flown in honor of his life. All for a man who not only was dedicated to his family, but committed and supported most of his life to the United States of America. As many may know that serving is one thing, but what he did during his times of service was incredible. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Roscoe, sisters, Lillie, Willie Lou, Veelas and Laura and daughter Wanda Price. He leaves to cherish his memories: Devoted wife of 53 years, Ruby, three loved daughters: Carrie Cross, Meirlyn Mosley and Johnnie Dawkins. Eight adored grandchildren: Marisa Green (Kelvin), Laderenia P. Dixon, Tameika Price-Pugh (Thurman), Damian ”DD” Price, Urtis Cross-Dagins (Kenneth), Jarvis Price (Alicia), Jazmon Mosley and Terriny Mosley-Richard (Mark) 14 spoiled great grandchildren, and a devoted caregiver and brother-inlaw Willie Sanders Jr. and a host of nieces, nephews and God Children.

After working for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals and attending graduate school for Physiology and Biophysics at Georgetown University and Johns Hopkins University for Education, the founder of this organization, Adeeb Barqawi, had the opportunity of joining Teach For America. Adeeb was assigned to teach Physics at Kashmere High School located in Northeast Houston. The daily conditions that his students faced were crip-
pling. Not only did students not have access to quality food and health care, they were limited to many after school programs both inside and outside of the school. Adeeb realized that it is simply unsustainable for schools to be responsible to solve the effects of poverty – schools cannot do it on their own, neither can any organization or entity. While an organization focusing on each of his student needs existed, what lacked was the coordination of
the various organizations providing direct services to children. As a result he founded Prounitas, as he believed that in order for drastic change to occur multiple organizations must work together in a stable, permanent and coordinated fashion in order to empower every child holistically. ProUnitas builds a centralized civic infrastructure with structured processes leading to a shared vision, measurement and continuous communication in efforts to rationally distribute and house health, educational, workforce development and social services for the 0-24 population. As a backbone organization ProUnitas Establishes the space and provides the tools for an organized, centralized and representative voice to tackle community issues, advocate for necessary resources and guide/ support the direction of service providers within a community. As a structured conduit, ProUnitas, facilitates the effective entry, coordination and implementation of services by making engaging with a community more feasible thus allowing organizations to focus on their mission.
With a finite amount of resources, ProUnitas allows for early identification of gaps and in return leverages its resources to fill them increasing the impact of organizations in a cost effective way. Given that every community is unique, ProUnitas functions to
build a centralized civic infrastructure within a geographic focus – school feeder pattern. This allows for the efficient use of existing assets, measurement of systemic impact and personalizing the solution to the specific need of a community.
