WHEN POLITICAL SATIRE IS NO LONGER FUNNY: THE HOUSTON CHRONICLE MAKES A MAJOR ERROR Manhood, Race & Culture By Dr. James Thomas Jones III

Although I am unsure how the recent political cartoon run in The Houston Chronicle should be termed, however, one thing is certain, the decision-makers for that periodical are glaringly absent in myriad ways --- judgment, cultural sensitivity, historical literacy, and the list goes on and on, and on and on. I must applaud the vigilance of community leaders such as Quanell X, former Houston City Councilwoman Jolanda Jones, and even many of the readers of The Houston Chronicle for calling out the periodical for its cavernous lack of judgment in running a Washington Post ‘editorial cartoon’ by Tom Toles in its opinion section. There is little need to rehash the death of Sandra ‘Sandy’ Bland who was found dead in a Waller County jail cell on July 13, a mere three days after state trooper Brian Encinia stopped her for changing lanes without using a turn signal.

The Houston Chronicle’s decision to run such a communication raised the ire of signiﬁcant sections of not only the Black community, but also rational Americans, for good reason. The issuing of a ‘satirical cartoon’ after such a polarizing death is done in not only poor taste, but also ill-timed as Sandy’s earthly remains had been laid to rest less than twenty-four hours prior to its appearance. There is quite possibly no greater sign that the Houston Chronicle’s leadership has no understanding of how to deal with such racial matters than running this ‘satirical cartoon’. Interesting enough, the Houston Chronicle’s editorial board has not shied away from this matter as evidenced by it issuing a half-hearted apology to ‘offended readers’. The statement reads, “In publishing it, we certainly did not intend to make

light of her death…The op-ed pages are a space for an exchange of views. Sometimes those views are provocative…We’re sorry that it offended some readers.” As a writer, the latent message that such half-hearted apologies convey angers me the most. The Houston Chronicle, by far Houston’s largest newspaper, apparently fails to understand that when its editors decide to included the aforementioned ‘satirical cartoon’ that message reverberates throughout the entire community, angering some, validating the prejudiced views of others, and misinforming those who are undecided upon the issue. WHY A‘PRAIRIE VIEW PANTHER PARTY’ IS NECESSARY By: #WhoIsDanFreeman

Although I am certain that my rapidly increasing feelings of disgust and a loss of patience with Black folk are natural extensions of gaining a greater understanding of how politics work. Put simply, I am tired of hearing Black folk talk, and talk, and talk, and talk some more about what we should do, could do, and ought to do; unfortunately, they never ever get around to doing anything. I would like to think that I am well past the stage of simply talking about our problems and well down the path of supplying reasonable solutions to the pressing political and economic problems facing our people. Now that our dear sister Sandra Bland’s earthly remains have been laid to rest and the emotionalism surrounding her death has entered into an expected spiral toward irrelevancy, the question becomes what will those who have repeatedly championed hash-tags adorning her name do? Those opposed to AfricanAmerican political rights or economic well-being have historically operated from a playbook that instructs them to frustrate African-Americans via unethical and immoral, yet legal, political and legal maneuvers and in due time their commitment will wane and their protests will summarily collapse. Put simply, once the emotionalism melts away and their goals seem distant as ever, African-Americans will become distracted by other events and abandon that which they seemed so dedicated toward. One only needs to view issues such as how whites have patiently and methodically captured signiﬁcant portions of historic Black communities or the murders of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and the shootings in

One must not forget that the Black vote is one of the foundational tools that Waller County whites have desperately attempted to remove from the hands of Prairie View A&M University students; and for good reason. This issue of curtailing the Black vote throughout the South during the twentieth-century has its genesis with the 1903 ordinances that muted the Black voice as a result of the “white primary.” According to The Handbook of Texas, areas such as Waller County, Texas, were especially harsh upon Black voting rights because of the sizable Black population living in the region. There were eight-thousand Black voters on the Republican Party rolls in 1912, however, only 144 Republican votes were cast that year. HOW SWEET THE SOUND...”

mazing grace! (how sweet the sound). That sav’d a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see.’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears reliev’d; how precious did that grace appear, the hour I ﬁrst believ’d! Thro’ many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; ’tis grace has brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.” While delivering the eulogy of Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, President Barack Obama, began to sing these lyrics. Lyrics that have become one of the most notorious spiritual hymnal’s known to the Black church. Pinckney was the former pastor of Emanuel AME Church (one of the oldest African-American churches that exists) and the South Carolina state senator, who was one of nine people gunned down due to a racially motivated hate crime. The incident was committed by Dylann Roof on June 17. This devastating tragedy is just one of many that has occurred upon the Black race in recent years. However, the difference in this case is that the truth of a racially motivated hate crime has been exposed and brought to the forefront; whereas in many other instances these details never surface, or at least are just called out for what they are. Many people were in total amazement, some amused and others genuinely touched by the president’s demonstration of “Amazing Grace”. However, one of the things that came to my mind after viewing the nationally televised funeral of the late reverend and senator, was the author of the song. A lot of times, people sing,

songs and quote words that others have written and have no idea of the trials that a person went through to arrive at them. For years, African-Americans have sung “Amazing Grace”, but if you were to ask who wrote it, I believe a great many would suggest that it was written by an African-American. Ironically, the truth is the total opposite. John Newtown was the author. He was born in London nearly three decades ago. His father was the commander of a merchant ship. As a youngster he often journeyed with his father on various voyages. According to his biography he was, “impressed into service on a man-of-war, the H. M. S. Harwich”. A service that he later abandoned but was soon captured and lost his rank causing him to go from,”midshipman to common seaman”. Ironically, one of the most amazing details of Newton’s life in correlation to the hymnal that African-Americans have come to ﬁnd consolation in is that; he once was a servant to slave trader. As a servant he experienced the perils of being a slave and was beaten and abused himself. It wasn’t until he was noticed by a sea captain that had known the works of his father, who at this point was deceased; that he was rescued. From that experience, he ended up providing service on a slave ship. In fact, he even became the captain of his own slave ship. Newton, had religious knowledge, but at this point he was not what most people would consider, religious. It was later on that he was on a voyage when he encountered a treacherous storm. During this, ﬁerce storm he called out, “Lord, have mercy on us.” After being delivered from the storm, and once he had found his

place of refuge he was assured that “grace” was on his side, “Amazing Grace” at that. From this point on, he received his salvation. Newton by his own admission referred to himself as a “wretch”, but later became a minister and went on to record many other hymnals that have withstood the test of time. Although he was still a signiﬁcant part of the slave trade, history documents that he always made sure that the slaves amongst his ship were treated as humans. I thought on his story as the president of these United States stood with boldness and fervor and strongly sung, “Amazing Grace”. Because, We MUST Understand, that if a person was to truly dissect the lyrics associated with this song, you can clearly tell that there is a much deeper meaning which is often overlooked. I believe that the president’s rendition of this song touched the lives and hearts of many people throughout the nation without respect to color. But, at the end of the day, regardless of what has happened, what is happening and what continues to happen, if any race of people can say that they have experienced, “Amazing Grace” then certainly Black folks can. I often say and state that there is something about this Blackness that people just don’t understand. Because no matter the trials, obstacles and circumstances that have arisen in the lives of African-Americans, there has always been a strong determination in our blood to persevere and overcome them.

HOUSTON - Once upon a time, Ovide Duncantell stated, “The Creator sent me to this city to change things around and he put protective angels roundabout me”. Hence, any man, woman, boy or girl that is aware of Duncantell’s many achievements; would have to conclude that he had to have help from a greater power to deli ver the various victories that he has set out to accomplish in the city of Houston. He has lived a life full of activism, community service, with the combination of a strong desire to change the political apparatus of this city. Therefore, due to his complete engagement, dedication and undying love and concern for Houstonians, a “Roast and Toast” was recently held in his honor. Rev. DeWayne Lark, Chairman of the HCCO Foundation hosted the event at the Communication Workers of America (CWA) Hall located at, 1730 Jefferson St., 77003. Pastors, ministers, politicians, local residents, community activists and a long list of other distinguished guests gathered, to pay homage to one of the greatest fighting forces in the Houston area. Rev. Jew Don Boney started the evening off by delivering the invocation. Mrs. Kimberly WileyJules followed by singing a splendid rendition of, “My Soul is a Witness for My Lord”; which uplifted attendees all over the building. Affectionately known as the Mayor of Sunnyside, Mrs. Sandra Massie Hines provided the occasion. In her delivery she gave a brief history of a few of the works of Ovide Duncantell. A special phone tribute was made by the nephew of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Derek King. He stated to Duncantell on a live call that he loved him dearly and regarded him as a, “ten-star general”. Afterwards, several political representatives and pastors spoke kind works and gave tributes and declarations. Amongst them were: John Gibbs for Council Member Michael Kubosh, State Representative Ron Reynolds, Pastor James Nash, Representative Alma Adams and State Representative Sylvester Turner, Once, Rep. Turner took the podium, he fervently spoke on Duncantell. He recognized the struggle and effort

DeWayne Lark, Ovide Duncantell & Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee that Duncantell went through since his arrival in the Houston area in the early 1960’s. Upon concluding, Turner had guests standing up clapping all over the building. In his final remarks, he stated, “If he doesn’t do anything else, he’s already done enough!” After dinner was served and attendees had finished networking and fellowshipping, a video presentation was shared by Sherman Harris. A grande entrance of Ovide Duncantell, proceeded. Then Rev. DeWayne Lark and Sylvester Brown rendered special and sponsor presentations. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee then gave Duncantell a congressional presentation, upon giving him praise for the mountain of difference he has made in the Houston area. The final remarks were given by Duncantell himself and Rev. Lark offered the closing remarks and prayer. The “Roast and Toast”, was definitely a success. Many of the speakers and presenters offered their condolences to Duncantell for the recent passing of his wife Naomi. All funds received were collected in support of the Ovide Duncantell fund. The man of the evening has an extensive resume that dates back decades ago. He is responsible for a wide variety of changes in the Houston inclusive with: making a serious change in the Houston Police Department; running for public offices such as Mayor and County Commissioner; assisting with the formation of the Harris County Justice of the Peace (Pct. 7, Place 2) office; paving the way for the opening of Sunnyside Health Clinic (now known as Quentin Mease Health Clinic), amidst a hefty list of other accomplishments. In 1974, Ovide Duncantell created and became founder and Executive Director of the Black Heritage Society,

Inc., (BHS). His persistence and enthusiasm resulted in the mobilization of the community in favor of South Park Boulevard becoming Martin Luther King, Jr., Boulevard. The Reverend Martin Luther (“Daddy ”) King, Sr., was so impressed by the BHS’s Society energy and gesture of respect for his deceased son that he made a personal appearance at the street name change and served as the BHS’s first MLK Parade “Grand Marshal,” on January 21, 1978. The street was christened by a city-wide parade down the boulevard. Making a pact and promise to Dr. King’s father, “Daddy King”, Duncantell and the BHS have since conducted the annual MLK Parade in Houston for nearly 40 consecutive years. Many local residents heard about Duncantell in 2012 as he made headlines on media outlets all over the city. At the age of 75, he singlehandedly chained himself to what he called the, “Martin Luther King Tree of Life” along the esplanade of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and Old Spanish Trail where the tree was being prepared to move to make way for the METRORail project a few years back. EVERYBODY HAS A PULPIT! Preachin’ from a Pen By Rebecca S. Jones

ome people may wonder how and why is this column beneficial to the Black religious audience of African-American News & Issues. Well, all I can say is that I was born out of and raised in a Black church, written for a Black publisher and I am Black. So while the word of God is good for any lay member of any denomination, faith, race, creed or color; I can only attest and write about the things that I have seen displayed in Black churches. Furthermore, African-American News & Issues seeks to address current and historical realities affecting our communities. Hence, I see nothing wrong with, “Preachn’ from a pen”, about realities that are relative to our churches. Lest I digress away from the basis of this editorial, I must start by stating that the whole world is designed as a pulpit, for those that believe. A pulpit is defined by Webster’s Dictionary as, “an elevated platform or high reading desk used in preaching or conducting a worship service.” Although many are called and few are chosen, according to St. Matthew 22:14; the spreading, carrying and witnessing of the gospel message is not limited only to the elected people of God. Any person that has confessed, repented and established themselves as a disciple of Christ is applicable to share the unadulterated word of God. So figuratively, I have concluded that, “Everybody has a Pulpit”, which has no restrictions. From as young as I can remember, I have always heard my father say that, “the church is a monument and a movement all at the same time.” This lets me know that while we go to the church to worship and be replenished at the church we are the church. To those that profess salvation, the church resides in us and when we move, so should the church. Likewise, should our conversation, demeanor, attitude and countenance all serve to manifest traits that are becoming of the church, be it inside or outside of an established place of worship. Because, “Everybody has a Pulpit” and when we are out amongst the world you better believe that they are looking to see that our, walk matches the talk! I know for a fact that there have been many ministers that profess a call into the ministry; but have left churches and caused TX-8

outright turmoil in doing so, simply because they were not allowed to stand behind a pulpit. Reality check!!! So what??? The real work of toiling and laboring in the gospel is really not in the church house no way. In what many believers hold as the, “Great Commission” Jesus did not command his disciples to go out into the church. He did not place any restraints, limitations or boundaries on where the believer could go to preach and proclaim the gospel message of Christ. Instead he commissioned in St. Matthew 28: 19-20, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” So why then is there so much confusion in regards to people of God preaching in pulpits, when everybody has their own? Rather it’s at your workplace, out in the streets, social media, amongst kindred and loved ones... There is always room for a pulpit anywhere we journey, we just have to be willing to make ourselves available to stand on it. Rather than looking for an, “elevated platform”, try standing on the word of God; believe me it’s more than enough of a platform to stand on all by itself. I also want to serve notice on many of our believers that just really got it twisted. Though, Jesus adhered to the laws and principles established in the scroll, if you were to really run reference on his life you just will not ﬁnd him doing the majority of his work in the temples (at church). Now don’t get me wrong, He taught in the temple daily, but even in doing so He still found major ills within it. For it is written in St. Luke 19:45-46 that, “He went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought; saying unto them, it is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.” Furthermore, Jesus pronounced in St. Luke 15:7 that, “likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.” So while people get excited about: driving nice cars to church, dressing up to be seen, who can out pray or sing the next person, or who can hoop and tune up the loudest; none of that moves the Everlasting Father. Because the gospel ministry is about saving souls, not competition. Therefore, it would behoove our good ole’ Bible-toting, scripture quoting saints to realize that, “Everybody has a Pulpit”; and that stage is best used out in the world where the true marketplace is instead of inside the church battling and jocking for a spotlight.

THE NEED FOR INTERFAITH PEACE BUILDING By: Honorable Eddie Bernice Johnson

During the July Congressional recess, I participated in an international conference in Taipei, Taiwan. The conference focused on utilizing culture and faith to promote world peace. During the conference, the participants highlighted the need for interfaith conflict resolution. One thousand guests from seven different countries and various religious beliefs united to find common ground on which to build peacemaking and peacekeeping strategies. As I reflect on this experience I am hopeful for the future, yet burdened by the growing prominence of racial, ethnic and religious conflicts that threaten not only our physical security, but the future of peace and social harmony throughout this country. This threat was highlighted by the brutal murders of nine innocent people as they attended Bible study at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina on June 17th. In the wake of this tragedy, people of diverse backgrounds came together to pray, to worship and to collectively mourn the tragic loss of life. At the urging of various faith leaders, the people of Charleston led the nation in one of the most powerful peace-building demonstrations that we have witnessed in recent history. The

families of the victims shocked the world as they addressed the alleged killer with words of forgiveness and love. As the country mourned faith leaders in Charleston and those throughout the country echoed messages of hope and stood in solidarity to denounce hatred and division. The role that faith leaders played in the wake of this tragedy is not new in our society. Faith leaders, throughout our history, have led us through transformative change. During the height of the Civil Rights movement, members of the clergy stood with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Selma and in many parts of the country during the struggle for racial and social equality. Collectively, they called for justice and awakened the conscience of America. Recently in Dallas, pastors of two churches: one with a predominantly African American congregation, the other with a predominantly white congregation, exchanged pulpits so that their members could experience diversity in worship, and begin to build relationships as people of faith. POWERLESSNESS TO THE PEOPLE

Powerlessness [powér-les-ness] – 1) helplessness, hopelessness, weakness, subjection, inability, incapacity, unable to produce an effect. 2) Without power, strength, authority, or influence. I searched around Houston’s historically Black communities and asked three different people the same question: Why do you think that African-American people are powerless as a race? Of course, the answers varied. And so, the simplest answers were as follows: Answer #1 – “We lack unity”. (by: Pastor Sandy P. Mosley, 62 years of age, Acres Homes). Answer #2 – “We have poor mindsets… much worse than that of crabs in a bucket, because they don’t realize what they’re doing when they pull another crab back down into the bucket”. (by: Symphony Whitfield, 19 years of age, Carverdale). And the third answer was of comparable impact, but of much greater length and detail. Therefore, I’ll close this article with that person’s comments. In the meantime, I’ll attempt to touch on the topic by adding my personal point of view. Truth: Where there is unity, there is strength. That said; there is no wonder why the African-American race appears to be weakened to a less than compromised state. In like manner, there is little doubt about why the wheels on our communal vehicle of upward mobility have evidently come to a screeching halt. As the saying goes; there is strength in numbers. Yet, whenever any particular critical issue happens to affect our community and/or culture as a whole, we typically turn out in scattered small groups and offer faint and ineffective pleas for justice. Then, when the dust settles after such rallies and when the tiny crowds disperse - unfair verdicts stay the same, crooked cops are still exonerated, ‘civilian review boards with prosecutorial power’ remain non-existent, and so on. Invariably, the portrait of our inner-city blues still hangs about the wall of social ills, looking just like it did when Marvin Gaye sang about it in the early 1970’s. He sang about our problems aloud: “Crime is increasing… triggerhappy policing… panic is spreading… only God knows where we’re heading… money – we make it… before we see it, you take it… Inflation… no chance to increase finance… Hang ups… let downs…bad breaks… setbacks… natural fact is; I can’t pay my taxes. It makes me wanna holler; the way they do my life… this ain’t living. This ain’t living!” Yet, amid all of this – Where UNITY is the concern, we constantly contribute to our own demise due to the deficiency thereof. In today’s world, ours appears to be a race diluted by the differences in our core moral values. To the same degree, variances of social class, financial status, and religion (or its non-existence) complete our position of separation and division as a people. In essence, those of us who profess to be ‘better off’ than others of us usually shun those whose lives and lifestyles are perceived as ‘less valuable’. Nevertheless, factors like these only scratch the surface of the afflictions that plague African-American people. In the interim, by their observation of our cultural idiosyncrasies, outside forces are easily able to detect our weaknesses and proceed in attacking the strength and solidarity of our people. And without difficulty, others are

able to simply amplify the problems which we have caused for ourselves, using the tried and true method of divide and conquer. They’re aware of how we don’t readily support Black-owned businesses and neither do they. They notice how we’re reluctant about hiring and/or supporting our own kind and likewise, they echo this sentiment. Meanwhile, other ethnic groups band together in a tightly woven formation and glide ahead of us in this journey called life. With a unified stance, they patronize their own businesses and soar to heights within society that we can merely dream of. They stabilize their own social class across the board by hiring and promoting people within their own race. And when they’re financially challenged, they pull together, combing multiple families into one household until each of them can comfortably achieve a common goal of individual success. In relation to these details, one thing is painfully clear: Other races possess the unity we lack. As it relates to our mindsets, you can find a Black family in Anytown, USA walking blindly hand-in-hand into a materialistic abyss, enlisting themselves into assorted forms of slavery including, but not limited to idolatry at its finest. In effect, we’ve traded our physical shackles in for figurative ones, such as overpriced foreign automobiles as well as other overpriced foreign items that we can’t truly afford (Italian Gucci and Versace, Greek inspired NIKE shoes, Brazilian named/Asian processed artificial hair priced at hundreds of dollars per bundle, etc.). What’s worse is how we tend to crucify another brother or sister when they don’t own any of these or other big-ticket items. This brings me back to Answer #2 from Symphony Whitfield. We do indeed have poor mindsets. Furthermore, I was absolutely affected by the ladder of Symphony Whitfield’s comment when she compared our race to crabs in a bucket. Reason being; whenever we assassinate one another’s character, kill each other’s dreams, and prevent one another from moving onward and/ or upward, it’s our full intention to pull the next person back down into the dark and uncomfortable place in which we all began. Brothers & Sisters Wait Before You Tie The Knot

When I thought of marriage as a little girl I just saw my mother and father together with my· siblings. I didn’t know what marriage was and how much of a commitment it is. If I had to really think about my early teachings of marriage and the role of a spouse, it would go as far back, with church and Sunday school. But what should you really know before you walk down the aisle, or run to the Justice of Peace to link up with the man or woman that by law and before God and a viable witness you are now legally partners on paper. Lets first focus on you. If you are a young lady in your early twenties make sure you’re not getting married so your boyfriend can quote,”save you”. Ask yourself if you are in a financial position to take care of yourself. Do you have your own car and a place to live prior to the prenuptials. Are you employed, in school or both? Are you currently carrying any baggage with you? Do you have any student loans, family issues, such as abandonment, neglect, or molestation? Are you getting along with your immediate family? Ask yourself if you are sane and headed in the right direction professionally and personally? Have you given any thought to your career or how you envision your life to be? Focus on the part you will be able to control with your hard work and talents only. This will ensure that you do not go into the marriage with unrealistic fantasies on what is possible with your new mate. You should know if you would like to have kids before you meet TX-10

your mate. It should be a decision you make for yourself first as a woman. Remember, traditionally it’s the woman that carries a baby in her womb for 9 to 10 months. I repeat the women and not the man. If you’re already thinking when are we going to start focusing on your mate and what he should know and do; chances are if you are planning on marrying soon,you’re probably not ready. Ask your self what are you bringing to the marriage? What are you strengths and weakness? (Or areas you still need to improve in?) Are you a happy person now? Consider your friends and how many of them are married? Will marriage ultimately fit your current lifestyle? If not what adjustments are you willing to make? Do you have friends who are married? (with certificates) Do you know what the Bible says about marriage? Do you believe in short quick wins or hard fought victories? Do you have any patience? Are you loving and open to others expressing love to you? Can you forgive easily and not constantly live in the past? If you are biting down on your bottom lip now, then chances are you are not ready for marriage just yet. How is your health? Are you in shape? Is your weight an issue? What are your spiritual beliefs? Would you change your beliefs if your future mate asked you too? Although, these are just a few key questions to ask yourself. There are ultimately three real questions you should know before you say “I DO”. 1. Did God choose this mate for

you? 2. Why you are getting married? 3. Do you have a ring? (to symbolize engagement) If you can not say yes to all three of these questions, again you’re not quite there. Marriage is one of those things I could give you a 100 ways to prepare. But the real test happens unfortunately after the prenuptials. However, there is hope. One who is wiser and more stable than you? If you are a young man and believe that getting married will stop you from cheating on your girlfriend stop reading this now, and don’t revisit the idea of marrying anybody for at least eight years. You have some real maturing to do.. If you are in college and you girlfriend and or her parents are putting pressure on you to marry because you’ve been together for the last three to five years then ask yourself what do you want? Think about it now before you read another sentence. If it’s because you love

her and don’t want to lose her then you should know; if you marry under these conditions then you re beginning a partnership where you make important decisions based off fear. The Tigers captured the university’s first C.D. Henry Award by taking SWAC Championship titles in basketball, indoor track and field and baseball. The men’s teams also took second place in cross country, golf and outdoor track and field to earn 70.5 points towards top award. President John M. Rudley praised the program, coaches and staff for the outstanding 2015 season. “This has been a year of record breaking for the Texas Southern University Tigers Athletics Program. Dr. McClelland has helped orchestrate one of the greatest come-backs of any athletics program in the country. He has made good on all the promises we set when we began this journey in 2009.” Alabama State finished second with 68.5 points and Prairie View A&M finished third with 65.5 points. The SWAC began recognizing the top men’s team in 1969. “Dr. McClelland and his team have achieved excellence both in the classroom and on the field, rising from the worst academic record to one of the top; experiencing the winningest season in all sports, and now receiving the Henry Award, one of the most significant honors bestowed by the Southwestern Athletic Conference. This is the first time in the history of TSU Athletics that the program has been awarded such honors, and we congratulate the student athletes, coaches, staff, and administration for a job very well done,” Rudley said. Texas Southern University’s Athletics program excelled both on the field and in the classroom this year. Athletics’ success culminated on Saturday, May 16, when 34 student athletes crossed the stage to receive their diplomas in fields ranging from business to science. This year 77 student athletes made the Dean’s Academic List for maintaining a 3.0 GPA. The average APR (Academic Progress Rate) for the teams reached 970 this year, with the NCAA requirement being 930 or better. As noted, the Tigers also excelled in competition this year, surpassed the previous 21-year TSU record of four championships attained in 1994 with five championship titles this season. ing over half of the sports programs at Texas Southern that finished the year in 1st or 2nd place. Five sports now hold 2015 Southwestern Athletics Conference (SWAC) championships: men’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s basketball, softball and baseball. Men’s basketball also won the SWAC Tournament which sent them to the NCAA Regionals while the women went on to play in the NAIA tournament. The TSU softball and baseball teams also played in the NCAA Regional tournaments. Second place team season finishers included men’s and women’s golf, men’s cross country, as well as men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. Individual coaches were also were recognized for outstanding work, including Coach Mike Davis named SWAC Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year, Johnetta Hayes-Perry named SWAC Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year, Worley Barker chosen as SWAC Softball Coach of the Year, and Clyde Duncan selected as SWAC Men’s Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year. Four students were singled out as the best of the best. Madarious Gibbs was selected SWAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Year and SWAC Tournament MVP. Kali Fluke was named SWAC Volleyball Player of the Year and Darian Claibrone was designated SWAC Football Newcomer of the Year. Thomasina Garza was honored as SWAC Softball Player of the Year, Hitter of the Year and SWAC Tournament MVP. Demetrious Williams was named SWAC Men’s Indoor Track and Field Most Outstanding Field Performer and Zach Welz was named the 2015 SWAC Baseball Tournament Most Valuable Player. Dr. McClelland praised his coaches and their teams for the outstanding showing this year. “This was the winningest season in Tiger history, and I am particularly proud that while our athletes were breaking records on the field, they also were breaking records in their classrooms,” Dr. McClelland said. “We committed to President Rudley and to all of Texas Southern University that we would bring back the Tiger’s winning legacy. I am proud to say 2014-15 was the year that we fulfilled that promise!”

HT President Colette Pierce Burnette recently named Dominique R. Bowman as Director of Community Engagement and Public Health Initiatives for the CHWC.
