ost married couples who have been together for a long time understand that there are certain “rules” of protocol that must be followed when out and
about. You are not the same people you were prior to getting married and what sets those things apart is how you behave in the company of yo husband or wife. Case in point: There is a certain amount of respect that should be shown by married couples to each other while in the company of others. Say, for instance, that you’re out at the mall and someone that you do not know comes up and gives your spouse a big ass bear hug. Your spouse, in return, responds to this by hugging this person back while exchanging pleasantries as you look on in disbelief. When they’ve finished “feeling” on each other, the visiting person leaves the scene without acknowledging you as if

A
s a kid growing up on Chicago’s South Side in the 1950s, I loved baseball. But most blacks then didn’t love the Chicago Cubs. There were two reasons for that. The Cubs played at Wrigley Field on Chicago’s North Side, and blacks almost literally took their lives in their hands walking or driving though the lily-white, rabidly hostile neighborhoods around the ballpark. The other was that most blacks then lived on Chicago’s South Side. They adored the Chicago White Sox, who played at Comiskey Park on the South Side. Many remembered that five years before Jackie Robinson crashed through the color barrier in baseball in 1947 with the Dodgers, the Chicago White Sox gave him a look-see tryout in 1942. When the Sox were away, team owners rented the stadium out to Negro League teams and the biggest game for the Negro Leagues was the East-West Classic All-Star game held each summer at Comiskey. My father and other blacks regularly jammed the

you were invisible during the entire time. Your spouse, in turn, resumes walking with you as if nothing ever occurred. No explanation, no excuses, no respect. From both parties. We all have close friends that we feel comfortable with hugging our spouses. Hell, we don’t even mind them greeting them will a polite kiss “every now and then” on the cheek. These friends are the ones that we have known for a while and they know and understand marriage protocol even if they aren’t married themselves. Can you relate to where I’m coming from? However, total strangers should not be allotted the same privileges as close friends. That is how ISH gets started. And once it gets started, the unsuspecting spouse has every right to question their mate
and the other person who’s bold enough to disrespect you right in yo face. Not everyone should be allowed to put their hands on yo spouse, especially if you don’t know them. There might be a small minority of married couples who are alright with this; they feel that any negative reaction to it might have something to do with jealousy or insecurity. But, what would happen if their spouse did the exact same thang and took it one step further with someone they didn’t know? Who knows what that “one step” could be? The best thing to do is this: If you have a friend or co-worker that your spouse has never met, don’t allow them to come up and slobber on you without at least introducing them to yo mate first. If they continue to do it after then, their
ass has some serious explaining to do or they may get embarrassed by the reaction you decide to take. Yo silly ass spouse, too. Disrespectful people don’t care what they do as long as they are allowed to do it. Again, that is how ish get’s started. If yo spouse doesn’t care enough about you to make sho that this doesn’t happen, it may be time for you to sit down and reevaluate yo relationship. In closing, I could be talking to and/or about a lot of young couples out there. Some of you older couples might be listening, too. Don’t allow other people to put their hands on your spouse, especially if you don’t know them. Make sho that YO spouse knows this, too. That’s marriage protocol. Nearly all of whom in the early to mid-1950s still had almost no chance to crack the color bar that had morphed from the rigid barrier before Robinson broke it in 1947 to a gentleman’s arrangement among the owners to clamp a tight quota on the number of blacks that each team could have on their roster at any one time. Despite my disdain for the Cubs, the name that I and every black baseball fan in Chicago knew was Ernie Banks. I closely followed Banks’ exploits. I’d listen to Cubs games on the radio. When the announcer said “And now Banks is stepping to the plate,” I got a thrill of pride and anticipation that with that easy almost nonchalant trademark batting style of his -- with the right elbow cocked high -- he would smack one out of the park. When he did I screamed with delight. The avalanche of accolades, tributes to, and remembrances of Banks on his passing made the obligatory gush that he was a great player and a model of decorum and civility. The undertone to this is that Banks, unlike Robinson, was a great guy because
he never uttered a peep about racial bias within and without baseball. This supposedly enhanced his status as a paragon of greatness. This deliberately distorts and ignores what Banks said and had to face when he broke in with the Cubs in 1953. Banks lived on Chicago’s South Side not far from where I lived. He often commuted to Cubs home games on the L train. He had no choice. Though he was the biggest name and biggest draw the Cubs had, he could not buy a home or rent an apartment in the neighborhood surrounding Wrigley Field. I remember my father and other blacks talking about how Banks privately would complain that few blacks ever came to Wrigley field for Cubs games. Years after he hung up his glove in 1971, he opened up and expressed his disappointment at the invisible racial barrier for Cubs games: “I lived with a lot of schoolteachers and bankers, and they never came to Wrigley.” Banks tried to do something about that. He cajoled John Johnson, the publisher of Ebony and Jet, to buy Cubs season tickets one year. A decade after his debut with the Cubs,
Johnson became reportedly the Cubs’ first African-American season-ticket holder. It was all for naught. Johnson didn’t use them and Banks told why: “He called me and said, ‘Ernie, I gotta cancel my tickets. I can’t get nobody to go with me!’” Banks did not turn a blind eye to the Cubs unstated quota system for black players in the 1950s. He acknowledged that the Cubs would quickly trade away young black players. He flatly attributed the reluctance of blacks to come to Cubs games to the lack of black players on the team.

Yet Another Half-Witted Discussion Regarding Black America Manhood, Race & Culture By Dr. James Thomas Jones III
I
t may be due to the fact that I have studied racial matters for the last three decades that I abhor the following issues, topics, and urban legends: light skin vs. dark skin, good hair vs. bad hair, Willie Lynch, the Illuminati, Slavery, Black Father absentia, and single-headed female households being cited as the catalyst to all that is wrong in Black America. I have learned that the more simplistic one explains an issue, the more likely that Black America will applaud your analysis. I have been involved in such discussions long enough to recognize that they arise with the same certainty as the seasons changing. I must attest that I am weary of such mundane, darn near asinine, discussions that leave participants no closer to a solution than when the discussion, panel discussion, YouTube video, or documentary began. I have come to realize that such discussions are little more than entertainment and an easy way for opportunistic individuals to line their pockets at the expense of a naïve, yet bewildered, public. This post is partially spurred by the recent bill duke documentary regarding the issue of Light skinned vs. Dark skinned that aired on OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network). Although my thoughts may have been spurred by duke’s unoriginal documentary, it pierced a larger issue that has driven me nearly mad amongst the so-called conscious Black community. That being, the tendency of our people to just spew rhetoric and dogma that is in no way, shape, or form liberating to our people. I now realize that these ‘discussions’ are designed to neither enlighten nor educate, rather to entertain an attentive audience that is seemingly comfortable with receiving ‘information’ that is of absolutely no
use as they move forward. The typical seminar/panel discussion that occurs regarding such mundane topics will involve half-witted understanding of historical contexts, such as Iyanla Vanzant taking it upon herself in the aforementioned documentary to create an extremely weird and unorthodox theory that attributes the effects of the pernicious system of American chattel upon African-American women to ‘cellular memory’ that explains why AfricanAmerican women can not seem to get along with one another, let alone advance in today’s highly-competitive society. Of all the diagnosis that would help to illuminate the contemporary plight of African-Americans, we are to believe, according to Iyanla Vanzant, that Black women can not get along with one another because of their cellular make-up, if such a diagnosis were correct then there is no hope for Black women because they are wired by their own DNA to hate one another to the end of time because of physical differences: good hair vs. bad hair, light skinned vs. dark skinned, etc. Such lunacy excuses away our failings as a community and Black women as individuals. If such simplification is valid, I would love to ask Iyanla how she explains the well balanced lives that include healthy, productive, and close relationships that many African-American women are involved in amongst their ‘sister circle’. Are they the exceptions to the rule or have they found a way to turn off their “cellular memory?” Unfortunately, neither Iyanla Vanzant’s determination that we are operating beneath the constraints of “cellular memory” addresses, let alone solves, the contemporary problems facing Black women today. However, for those sisters who may have missed an opportunity to participate in such a discussion, do not worry; there will be one occurring next year and every year after. Where are all the Preachers?
P
rofessional basketball player Larry Bird made a remark about leaders that I’m sure is very true. He stated that, “Leadership is diving for a loose ball, getting the crowd involved, getting other players involved. It’s being able to take it as well as dish it out. That’s the only way you’re going to get respect from the players.” Although Larry Bird referred this quote and related leadership to the game of basketball, I think it can be applied to any aspect or fashion of leading. The reason that I am making reference to the term “leader” is because I do believe that Bill Cosby will definitely go down in history as a leader amongst African-Americans. He began a career in the field of entertainment as early as 1948, during a time period when integration had not yet come to these United States of America. Also, during a time when the society was truly unfriendly to Blacks across the country. Nevertheless, Bill Cosby did not allow his potential success to be destroyed by the challenges that were persistent for Blacks during that time. Thus he was able to soar to the top and make strides as a comedian, actor and entertainer that will not be soon surpassed. Especially considering all that he had to go through and during the time that he had to go through it, at an attempt to accomplish that which he has. So here we are in 2015 and after achieving decades of a successful career in the entertainment industry, Cosby has been nailed to the wall by numerous reports and controversy. For those who are not too familiar with the details, I am going to provide a brief summary of the latest events that have occurred
which involve Cosby. Within recent months, he has been accused of sexual assault by at least 15 women. Majority of the women included in the number have said that they were drugged before being taken advantage of. However, I do believe that it is careful to note that these incidents happened decades ago and remain unsubstantiated. Bill Cosby has remained silent and has not even spoken in his own defense. The stance that he has taken does not make him guilty by any means, but

people just don’t view it that way. The way I see it, everybody makes mistakes at one time or the other. And while I am not even certain that Bill Cosby did make a mistake in the latest reports that have surrounded him in the media world, if he did I don’t think that’s a reason to crucify him. After thinking on the subject and listening to various opinions about his entire ordeal, I just have to ask one question... Where are all the preachers now? It is so strange that every time a pastor or a minister get in trouble in the eyes of the world and God they always throw out scriptures. Many of you know the one that I am

referring to, found in St. John 8:7. At a time when the Pharisees and scribes brought a woman to Jesus who they said had been caught in the act of committing adultery. However, rather than Jesus doing what the law said to do to someone caught in such a sin, he proposed a completely different option and method. The scripture reads, “So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.” This scripture along with “Judge not, that ye be not judged” St. Matthew 7:1; has been worn out by many preachers every time they get caught up into some kind of scandal. I have no problem with it, if it works for you then do it. But I am just wondering why our preachers aren’t standing up for Bill Cosby or even speaking a word on his behalf. Addressing the faithful and loyal readers of African-American News&Issues, please understand that I am in no mean condoning the acts that Bill Cosby has been accused of. However, considering that he has done a great deal for the Black community throughout the years that he has been in the world of stardom, I just think that he deserves a little more respect and support than that which has been given to him. Because as it is, he has not been found guilty of anything at all. And if you can not get respect and support from members of your own community, then where is that you should be expected to receive it from? TX-3

HOUSTON - It has been said that, “Dynamite comes in small packages” and METRO’s first Black female Chief of Police, Mrs. Vera Bumpers is no exception to that rule. Girdled with 32 years of service to the METRO Police Department, an humble, gracious and God-fearing personality, Bumpers has made history within the agency. However, her journey and entitlement was not one that was effortlessly achieved. She was one of four children born unto Eula and Percy Bumpers in Mobile, Alabama. However, at an early her parents relocated their family to San Antonio. During an interview, Chief Bumpers described she and her family’s experience with the grim and dark era of segregation. “I remember our family being pulled over and all of our stuff being thrown alongside of the highway. My dad would pull into several restaurants and convenient stores to ask the owners if we could use the rest room. A stern ‘NO’ is what he was constantly told. I would always ask my dad, ‘Why don’t you say something – why do you let them treat you like that?’ He would always say there are just ignorant people in the world and you just don’t understand.” During her primary educational years, she remembers being so traumatized by the bouts of racism and discrimination that she wrote a paper on the subject. She recalled the disdain and disgust she felt about the ill-treatment imposed on her family. “It was at a point and time in my life that I really didn’t comprehend the issue of racism and color, because at that age children don’t see or interpret color the way that adults do.” She never forgot the big red “A” that she earned on the paper and how proud her teacher told her that he was of her, because she put her emotions into it. She explained that the paper was written after one of those times that her father had taken their family to about three or four places and they would not let them use the rest room. Eventually, the police got behind them and warned that they needed to get out of town. Although it’s been years ago, the experience was one that she never forgot. “To this day, I can’t recall the exact town but I do know that it was somewhere between Alabama and Louisiana. They were TX- 4
following us around everywhere we stopped. My dad said y’all just have to wait and that was one of those points in my life that it opened my eyes to something I wasn’t familiar with” Vera shared. Over time her mother enlightened she and her siblings, by telling them the things that she witnessed in her early adulthood. Being a student at Alabama State University, her mother was apart of the marches and sit-ins during her college years. Nonetheless Vera suggested that, “Knowing about that history helps you appreciate your present, be excited about your future and teaches you how to deal with people regardless of - the things that I experienced as a child were true life lessons for me.” As the years passed, she would go on to graduate from Sam Houston High School in San Antonio. From there she enrolled into Texas State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree. She later pursued a Master’s degree and graduated from Prairie View A&M University. With a mind and the drive to succeed, she went on to the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, where she graduated in the 230th session. After graduating, she vividly reminisced how she was working in San Marcos. She befriended a fellow classmate that graduated with her by the name of, Ed Harris. She revealed that he’d secured a job with METRO as the assistant chief. She recalled how she received a phone call from him asking her if she wanted to come to Houston to work. With no attachments and nothing holding her back, she made the decision to go. Once she made her arrival, she was hired the same day which would serve to initiate decades of service towards a career at METRO. Currently, Mr. Harris is with Austin Police Department and over the Support Operations as a civilian. To this day, she still considers him a dear friend and is grateful of how he pushed her to reach her full potential years ago. Since that time, she has been the first female in every rank at METRO Police Department and has served in a supervisory capacity for over 25 years. While rising up the ranks, she had leadership responsibility for various units from Patrol to Homeland

Security. Her current entitlement as METRO’s Chief of Police calls for the leadership role of her supervision in a department of 185 sworn personnel and 70 non-sworn personnel. She was promoted to this position in November of last year. As it relates to transitioning into her newly elected position, she shared that it really has not been difficult. She stated, “I’ve always been the type of person that’s out front, wanting to learn, talking to people and wanting to stay engaged - so transitioning into this position was not hard at all.” She further explained that, “I pretty much know everybody that’s been hired here. There are those of whom we have had our disagreements with and there are those who are very supportive of me and I call them my ‘ride or push friends’”. Chief Bumpers deciphered the meaning of her “ride or push friends”; which are friends who ride with you when you have gas and push with you when you don’t. She said, “I have had that good network of support and friends who are going to be honest with me. Then there are those friends that are outside of here and they undergird me and keep me covered with prayer, as well as my family. So I have been very blessed throughout this transition period. I knew the system, I knew the players, the different department heads and they know me. A lot of bus drivers here I know, so no matter what level, I have had some engagement and it’s been a good thing for me.” Chief Bumpers acknowledged her direct supervisor, Tim Kelly who was once the Chief and Tom Lambert who is the Chief Executive Officer now, who was also once the chief. “They are still here and their doors are always open for me to run things by them and they’ve been very supportive” she said. Since settling into her new position, Chief Bumpers has laid a foundation for her staff. That anchorage rests on the basis of, 3 C’s: communication, cooperation and commitment. She clarified the reasoning behind each one by sharing the following. “I told the staff that, we are going to communicate with one another, the community that we serve, our internal and external customers, we are going to cooperate no matter what the situation, regardless of whose fault it is and we are going to

Metro’s Death Ride for Fiscal Accountability: Hands Up –

HOUSTON - After four years of political maneuvers and delays, on December 10, 2014 a meeting was confirmed at Metro headquarters for the purpose of discussing recommendations from community and business subject matter experts with metro staff and leadership. Gilbert Garcia, Metro Board Chairman, authorized the meeting at the request of myself, Charles X White at the February 2014 board meeting. Metro has held dozens of failed meetings with riders from various neighborhoods with little progress. Our agenda mirrored those concerns as well as safety issues, budget shortfalls and improving bus routes. The research was based on all Metro data related to budget and operations policies. Our task was to save taxpayers millions. The meeting was to begin at 9:30am. There was a delay due to Metro’s President Tom Lambert in order to allow the meeting to be videotaped. At approximately 9:30am, we agreed not to video however, to make matters worst, about 9:40am CEO, Lambert rushed into the room and canceled the meeting due to what he termed an, “I got you moment”. As a result of the display by CEO Lambert, recently, the Texas Civil Rights Project – Houston sent a letter expressing the displeasure and unprofessional behavior of CEO Lambert to board members and elected officials. In the previous weeks at the Kashmere Gardens Multipurpose Center an audience of about 50 bus operators, riders and taxpayers attended a meeting with Metro staff, board and administers. The audience rejected another Metro designed bad plan. Our data supports the riders and operators. A 37-year Metro bus operator Otis Robinson when interviewed stated that in “2003 Metro commissioned a study that stated that
to improve bus service Metro needed to expand bus services north, south, east and west without going through downtown”. Otis also stated from his position as an operator, “80% of the transit system was fine, only 20% needed redesigning”. The message from the audience forced Gilbert Garcia, board chair to state, that he will not support the proposed staff changes on the January board agenda. Over the past four years in and out of the view of the main stream public, a fierce battle between four groups of citizens, from east Houston, southeast Houston, north Houston and southwest Houston have been in hand to hand combat against the bullying of a Mayor Anise Parker’s, 5-member hand-picked majority metro board. The cast of characters in the private sector, public sector and community sector would be a who’s, who in Houston’s fabric of business, civic, government and shadow government players. Players like Congresswoman Sheila J. Lee, Dee and Ralph Simon, East end Chamber, a group of business owners on Richmond Ave, Post Oak, Congressman John Culberson, Robert Muhammad, Linda K. Brown, Paul Magazina, Jim Scarborough, Daphane Scarborough, Charles X White, Tracy Stephens and neighborhoods (Clinton Park, Pleasantville, Acres Homes, Kashmere and Settegast) countless more including bus riders, bus operators etc. Metro is led by a board of the following cast of managers; Gilbert Andrew Garcia, CFA, Chairman, Allen D. Al Green United States Congressman Houston Office 3003 South Loop West, Suite 460 Houston, TX 77054 Dear Congressman Green: On December 10, 2014, Texas Civil Rights Project attended a meeting with Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Houston, Texas (METRO) along with a group of community stakeholders, including Corridors United and Community Partnership Breakfast. The meeting, a culmination of three years of stakeholders’ effort, intended to discuss whether METRO’s polices and funding policies have a disparate impact based on race, income, or disability status. As the meeting was set to commence, Tom Lambert, President & CEO of METRO, angrily stormed into the conference room instructed the stakeholders to leave, shouting that the meeting had been canceled. He proclaimed that the stakeholders’ requests to videotape the discussion, which they had already agreed to drop in order to have the long sought meeting, had “subjected” his staff to unreasonable requests. It seems clear that Mr. Lambert used the videotaping issue as a pretext to cancel a meeting METRO has avoided for years. Simply put, his unprofessional behavior is unjustifiable and in stark conflict with METRO’s pledge of transparency. The stakeholders who arranged the meeting did so to voice the concerns of Houston’s traditionally neglected communities, most of whom do not have the time or privilege of attending themselves. We write to notify of you this important issue and to ask for your support in organizing another meeting with METRO and Mr. Lambert to discuss these matters in an open and transparent forum. HOUSTON - Recently, the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and Black Heritage Committee hosted a gala benefit at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The theme of the event was, “A Toast to Women of Excellence.” Two focal points of the event rested upon highlighting and saluting, “prestigious African-American women and individuals who are active in the rodeo, business, politics and philanthropy.” Dr. Terrance H. Fontaine was the chairperson and Sherifat Lawal – Price was the vice chairperson of the event. Amongst the women recognized were: Dr. Heather Brown, Judge Marie Jackson, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Courtney Johnson – Rose and Dr.
Black Heritage
Dorcia L. Rudley. A special award was presented to, Verna Lee Hightower. The proceeds from the event are to benefit Houston-area schools by providing scholarships to students. Additionally 20 scholarships were given to students. AUSTIN - Rick Perry promised to continue fighting Wednesday in the wake of a state judge’s refusal to dismiss the indictment accusing him of abusing his veto authority to try to force out a local prosecutor. The former Texas governor said it wouldn’t affect his decision on whether to formally announce for a run for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination. Perry’s lawyers said they quickly would lodge a new filing with Judge Bert Richardson based on flaws the judge identified in the indictment even while upholding it. They has already said they’d bring the case to the 3rd Court of Appeals in Austin, predicting it would be handled in an expedited way and that an opinion could come within 60 days. A legal expert previously had predicted that an opinion could take a year.
BEAUMONT – The motto “In God We Trust” will adorn the Jefferson County medallion in Commissioners Court sometime in the near future. Commissioners approved a resolution to incorporate the motto into the county’s emblem, which depicts an outline of the county with the legend “Jefferson County, Texas.” According to the resolution approved by commissioners, “In God We Trust” became the national motto on July 30, 1956. Jefferson County desires to display this patriotic motto in the County Commissioners Courtroom as a way to solemnize public occasions and express confidence in society. Before the new insignia can be installed, Commissioners Court must be renovated because of termite damage. No date has been given for the start of the renovations. CONROE - Conroe ISD’s highest-ranking employee now is guaranteed the job for at least five more years. The CISD Board of Trustees added one year to Dr. Don Stockton’s contract Jan. 20. The contract extends his employment through Dec. 31, 2019. Stockton thanked board members at the meeting for their support. Trustees have granted Stockton a

one-year extension at each annual review since 2009. The newest contract gives Stockton a raise to $343,000 annually. Stockton also gets a $1,500-per-month stipend for all “reasonable and necessary expenses” as part of his job. The district will no longer pay into an annual retirement fund starting this year, but the district will put in a contribution to the Texas Teacher Retirement System.
DALLAS - Mayor Mike Rawlings is recruiting candidates to join the GrowSouth Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) program. The project will hire seven VISTA members to help make a difference in Southern Dallas. Each VISTA member will receive $983 per month for their work, plus an additional $5,500 educational award, options for health benefits, child care benefits and paid sick leave/vacation. VISTA members are charged with reinvigorating and inspiring underserved Southern Dallas neighborhoods; strengthening neighborhood associations and helping to develop programs that bring people out of poverty. In addition to assisting neighborhood associations with establishing community development visions and plans, members will have access to resources and knowledge of the City Manager and executive staff and interact with the Mayor and City Councilmembers. EL PASO - The City Council accepted a petition signed by 10,000 El Pasoans that want the city to adopt a city-issued identification program that would help up to 40,000 residents who lack any official identification. The El Paso-based Border Network for Human Rights (BNHR), which has spearheaded the campaign, presented the mayor and city representatives with the petition. Dozens of people packed out the City Council
chambers in favor of the petition, and some held up banners asking the city for the program. Advocates say the proposed municipal or city-issued identification card has support from diverse sectors of the community because it could help homeless people, youths coming out of the foster care system, the LGBT community, immigrants and the elderly.
GALVESTON - Galveston County officials are seeking a change in state law to help them root out squatters living on beaches on Bolivar Peninsula. County commissioners will push the state Legislature this session for a change in the Texas Natural Resources Code to allow counties bordering the Gulf of Mexico to ban full-time living on unincorporated beaches, most of which are found on Bolivar Peninsula. GROVES - A chemical release from a refinery near Groves on prompted a shelter in place order for Taft Elementary School. The school’s administrators were notified of the release of sulfur dioxide. The shelter in place lasted 10 minutes. In that time, emergency officials and workers at Total Port Arthur Refinery were able to test the air quality and determine that the levels of the chemical release were not dangerous.
HOUSTON - Opening arguments have begun in the trial over Houston’s controversial Equal Rights Ordinance. City council members passed the ordinance last May. Opponents mostly don’t agree with the protections it offers to gay and transgender residents. Over the summer a group of opponents turned into the city a petition that would force a repeal referendum of the ordinance. At issue in the trial is whether the former city attorney legally invalidated thousands of signatures on the petition. Andy Taylor, the attorney representing the group of opponents who created the petition says no, while the city’s legal team says yes. Taylor says the city is coming up with ridiculous reasons to invalidate signatures. The trial is expected to last at least a week or two.

JASPER - A mom and her baby were killed in a fire in Jasper, according to a dispatcher with the Jasper Fire Department. The mobile home fire started around 9:40 p.m. in the 500 block of Sylvester Street, the city employee said. A man in his 40s was burned in the fire, but survived, the television station reported. The fire department dispatcher did not know the man’s age or name, but described his injuries as “serious”. Representatives from the Texas Fire Marshal’s Office are working with Jasper firefighters to find a cause, the dispatcher said.

PITTSBURGH -United States Steel Corporation announced recently that it will reduce its workforce at Lone Star Tubular Operations in Lone Star, Texas. Fairfield Works, the primary flat-roll supplier of rounds to Fairfield Tubular Operations, will also adjust operations. The move is a result of softening market conditions that reflect the cyclical nature of the energy market. Global influences in the market, like unfair trade and fluctuating oil prices, continue to have an impact on the business. The company routinely adjusts production at its operating facilities to reflect market fluctuations, according to the release. The adjustment in operations is a temporary reduction in operating levels and is not a full idling of plant operations. The company has worked with its customers to anticipate this adjustment and has produced sufficient inventory to meet customer demand during this period. As a precaution, 1,918 represented employees across the three locations have been advised of the upcoming adjustment and are being issued notices under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act. TEXAS CITY- There’s warning for everyone using ATM cards in the Texas City area. Police in the area say debit card skimmers are being placed on gas pumps. Gas stations, ATMs -- where ever you use a debit card -- could be hit next. Right now, the trouble spot is along the coast. Texas City Police say at least eight people have had their debit cards skimmed and then used illegally from Montgomery County all the way to Galveston. Detectives say in many of the cases the cards were skimmed at gas stations. One skimmer has been recovered by the La Marque Police Department. Low tech way to figure out if you are about to be a victim: grab the card slot give it a tug; if it is loose, do not use it. TX-11
