It’s About Janay Not Ray By: Jolanda Jones
Victim blaming is unacceptable. Case in point: Janay Palmer. You’re probably wondering who she is. She is the now wife and then-fiancé of Ray Rice. As if the video footage of him dragging her unconscious body out of an elevator, face down with her legs still in the elevator (“the Dragging”) and walking away, wasn’t enough many Rice supporters speculated, against the Janay’s interest, that she must have or did in fact do something to him to warrant him knocking her out. They chose to believe what they imagined rather than what the video actually showed. On a regular basis, we rally around our men and boys who are assaulted and killed by the police, especially when there is video. We take the video at face value. We don’t speculate about what the assaulted or dead man or boy did to provoke the police brutality but we

don’t take violence against women for face value. I feel passionately about this issue because I am a survivor of domestic violence. My ex-husband was a college and then a professional basketball player. His violence against me started when we dated. It continued throughout our relationship until I’d finally had enough and left him on November 8, 1995, the date of his last assault on me. During our relationship I was slapped, hit with fists, strangled, forced to have sex against my will and other psychological torture. I called the police only three times out of the too-many-times-to-count attacks. I never followed through with prosecutions except for the last one when I left him but fled to another country and avoided prosecution. I almost always refused to cooperate with the prosecution
Local & State because we loved each other and I thought he would change and because he was my child’s father. There were times when I left him only to return when he inevitably apologized and promised to never do it again but alas he always did it again. The times I did hear people speaking about domestic violence, especially when the OJ trial was ongoing; all I heard was people blaming Nicole Brown Simpson. I didn’t want to be judged like they judged Nicole. I kept silent and did all I could do to change and be the perfect girlfriend, then fiancé then wife so he would treat me better. He always said it was my fault; if I had done this and not that then he wouldn’t have had to hit or choke me. When I had bruises I either didn’t go in public, tried to cover them up or made up excuses about them. He complained about me being around my family, friends or looks people might be giving me. In 1989, at 23 years of age, I was the US Track & Field Heptathlon Champion. To show my love, he made me choose between him or them or my athletic career. He was jealous of everyone and everything. I loved him so I always chose him. During my time with him I gave up myself, my family, friends, and activities. I didn’t defend my 1989 national championship. I retired at 24. Unfortunately by the time I finally left him my Olympic aspirations were done. Over time I learned nothing I did was ever enough. I was always going to lose legitimate or non-
legitimate arguments or fights and if I stayed in it long enough I was going to lose my life, especially if it was during a time when I was trying to leave him. Janay Rice is me and every other abused person. She loves Ray Rice. She doesn’t want to be the cause of him losing his livelihood. They have a child together. They are a family. She’s known him since she was 16 years old. He’s all she knows. It’s not and never should have been about the All-Pro Super Bowl Champion running back who is a good person, great dad and is sorry. He’s sorry he got caught. It should always have been and should be about Janay. As long as society’s initial response is to bash the victim and find excuses for the batterers, the victims will less likely come forward. We are judged negatively the person we love most: our abusers. We don’t want to be negatively judged by you too. If our response as a society were to support the victim and not the abuser then victims would be less likely to stay in these unhealthy and dangerous relationships. We would feel the support needed to get out safely and/or alive. My Grand Mother always told me, “Sweetheart, when people show you who they are believe them.” People, we all saw the Dragging. Ray showed us who he is. Why did we have to see the other inside the elevator video to believe him. Please stop blaming the victim. In another story for another time, I will share why Janay is defending Ray and bashing the media. She is a victim. She needs counseling. She needs to learn that

Janay is a Teachable Moment Jolanda Jones Criminal Defense Attorney It makes sense that Janay Rice, the victim in the Ray Rice controversy, is strongly defending her husband and the father of her child. Her defense, in no way, undoes her husband’s wrong nor does it make her responsible for his violent attack on her. Janay she is a textbook example of an abused person. Some have thanked me for sharing my survival story on Fox26. My response is that if I don’t share then some don’t learn. To that end, this is a perfect time to use the Janay and Ray saga as a teachable moment. Violent and/or abusive relationships are based on a power and control model where the abuser uses intimidation, coercion, emotional abuse, isolation, privilege, economic abuse, minimizing, denying and blaming and children or other important people or things to control the victim. That power and control model typically follows a cycle of abuse. There are three phases: tension building, explosion and honeymoon. This cycle can happen in a day or it can happen over months but it tends to repeat. During the tension building phase you may see the abuser be impatient, irritable, frustrated, angry, nit-picky, threatening, emotional distant, Jekylland-Hydey, accusatory and/or other similar behavior. The victim recognizes the behavior and feels a sense of walking on eggshells. The explosion phase doesn’t necessarily have to be physical. It can also be psychological and emotional. From the abuser you may see assaults, intimidating body language, yelling, name-calling, cussing, throwing and slamming things, physical restraint keeping the from leaving, silent treatment
and other types of behavior that jar the victim. During this phase some victims just take it or defend themselves and fight back. Fighting back does not make you an abuser too. Even the law has a provision for self-defense. The honeymoon phase is your most perfect relationship. The abuser is fearful of losing the victim and/or that relationship. Consequently the abuser is on his/ her best behavior which translates into being apologetic, promising not to do it again, being more attentive, generous, loving, helpful, respectful, accommodating and other similar behaviors. The victim is happy, hopeful, idealistic, etc. During this period both the abuser and victim minimize the explosion because they both want the relationship to work and they both find ways to accept responsibility for it. The honeymoon almost never lasts. After the abuser realizes the victim is no longer in danger of leaving then the abuser is back to exercising power and control over the victim which inevitably leads to tension, to explosion; to honeymoon. I went through those phases for almost six years before I accepted that he would never change and that I would end up dead if I didn’t figure out a safe way out. Let’s apply this to what we’ve seen in the videos. There appeared to be tension outside of the elevator which exploded inside the elevator, out of the public’s sight. Inside the elevator Ray hit her. She then lunged at him. He then knocked her out. Next he dragged her unconscious body partly out of the elevator face down with part of her legs still inside the elevator, checked his phone and then walked away. Hotel staff asked if she “was drunk” and then adds “no police.” Domestic violence flourishes because it’s generally done behind closed doors in the privacy of the abuser, victim and perhaps the children. The country’s first Black president is approaching the last quarter of his sixth year in the Oval Office and the glaring question still remains: What has President Barack Obama done for Black people? As soon as people ask this question, the usual politically correct responses by some in our community are, “He’s not the President of Black people, he’s the President of the United States of America” or “We can’t expect for him to just address our issues because he’s Black.” We MUST Understand this clearly: Since he’s been in office, President Obama has not hesitated when it comes to addressing the plight of others. So why is there an issue when we talk about his lack of effort in addressing the issues of our communities? Don’t we have a right to do so? Let’s not forget, mostly Black people also stood in line for hours and hours to secure his win over Hilary Clinton. Our people came out by the thousands at countless venues to cheer him on. Our people gave their hard earned dollars as well to contribute to his campaign. Although I was under no illusion, but the majority of our people believed that his slogan “Change We Can Believe In” was going to be made a reality and would improve our condition. When he was elected, many hoped that we would be joining hands as one big happy melting pot family, ushering in the “post-racial” era. Some of us thought that the color of our skin would no longer be an issue since one of our own would be sworn into the highest office in the land. We have received a wake up call and We MUST Understand that it’s going to get worse before it gets better. As Malcolm X said,
we’ve been “Bamboozled! Led astray! Run amok!” During President Obama’s 2008 campaign, the media resurfaced a 2003 sermon by his former pastor Jeremiah Wright wherein he was heavily critical of the corruptness, hypocrisy and laws of the U.S. Government. In that sermon, Rev. Wright said in part, “And the United States of America government, when it came to treating her citizens of Indian decent fairly, she failed. She put them on reservations. When it came to treating her citizens of Japanese decent fairly, she failed. She put them in internment prison camps. When it came to treating her citizens of African decent fairly, America failed. She put them in chains. The government put them in slave quarters, put them on auction blocks, put them in cotton fields, put them in inferior schools, put them in substandard housing, put them in scientific experiments, put them in the lowest paying jobs, put them outside the equal protection of the law, kept them out of their racist bastions of higher education and locked them into position of hopelessness and helplessness. The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law, and then wants us to sing “God Bless America.” No, no, no. Not “God Bless America”; God Damn America! That’s in the Bible, for killing innocent people. God Damn America for treating her citizen as less than human. God Damn America as long as she keeps trying to act like she is God and she is supreme!” Rev. Wright did not lie. He told the truth. However, President Obama did a speech in Philadelphia in March 2008 in response to this video that appeared

He said, “The profound mistake of Reverend Wright’s sermons is not that he spoke about racism in our society. It’s that he spoke as if our society was static; as if no progress has been made; as if this country - a country that has made it possible for one of his own members to run for the highest office in the land and build a coalition of White and Black; Latino and Asian, rich and poor, young and old -- is still irrevocably bound to a tragic past. But what we know -- what we have seen - is that America can change. That is true genius of this nation. What we have already achieved gives us hope the audacity to hope - for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.” Well, Mr. Obama, six years and more grey hairs later, the harsh reality is that the euphoria has worn off. He looks like he’s ready to turn in the keys to the White House. He can barely get any policies passed with facing opposition and vitriol. He and his family have been racially attacked from day one. It only proves that no matter how high we go up, White society still only sees one thing: Black skin. Nothing has changed much in America, let alone for Black people. We’re still treated like three-fifths of a human being, unjustly gunned down, unemployed, leading in most negative health statistics, and more. That change we can believe in will only come from us doing it ourselves. Not from the White House on Pennsylvania Ave. TX-3

lthough it’s not the only city with violence, the street conflict in Chicago has dominated mainstream media news cycles the past few years. One would think that there is nothing good to report on about young people out of the Wind City or any city throughout the country. The historic all-Black Jackie Robinson West Little League team of 11- and 12-year-olds gave the city plenty to cheer about when they won the National Little League Championship by beating a Las Vegas team. The team captured the nation and world’s heart as they came back to win many games when it looked like they would be knocked out of the tournament. Although they came up short in the World Series Finale against South Korea 8-4, they had secured their place in history. Many of the players on the team come from areas filled with poverty and high gun violence. One player was reportedly homeless with his family, but a local business owner secured them residence. Thousands of dollars are now being donated to the team. In celebration, the team was mobbed at Midway airport, honored with a fireworks display on Navy Pier followed by a parade attended by 10,000. The parade started at their home ballpark on the South Side and culminated with a rally at the downtown Millennium Park. A few weeks later the team and their parents were flown to Disney World on a trip sponsored by United Airlines and the Rainbow/PUSH

Coalition. “I want to congratulate the Jackie Robinson West All Stars and Coach Darold Butler on a historymaking season,” said Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “As the first team in the history of the City of Chicago to reach the championship game, they are the pride of Chicago and will forever have a place in the record books. This team has electrified our city and rallied people from every neighborhood to support these great kids,” he said. “I’m still shocked by everything,” team coach Darold Butler said to reporters. “This whole journey has been a complete shock for me. I couldn’t have asked for anything more. I have the best coaches, the best kids to be around. They made it an enjoyable experience.” Butler and the team also received a personal phone call from President Barack Obama, who expressed how proud he was of the team and how proud they have made the residents of Chicago. According to the team’s official website, the mission of Jackie Robinson West, a chartered member of Little League Inc., is to bring children into a structured program environment intensely supported by adult volunteers where the values of leadership, team work and selfdiscipline are strongly emphasized. Joseph H. Haley founded the team in 1971 on the south side of Chicago. Mr. Haley’s goal was to “provide wholesome, healthy recreation through participation in the program.” Being an educator, Mr. Haley

was said to use the game of baseball as a classroom to teach leadership skills, team work and self discipline to his players. The program now has become one of the most outstanding community organizations in Chicago with hundreds of children registered and inspired to be their best. After their unbelievable season, the Jackie Robinson West team has sparked further conversation about the lack of Blacks playing in the major leagues. According to statistics, less than 8% of the 900 players listed on the 30 clubs are Black; a steady decline since 1980. In 1975, it was at 27 percent. The number of Hispanic players in the MLB has increased from 7 percent in 1975 to over 30 percent in 2014. Throwing like a girl? The unstoppable arm of Mo’ne Davis Mo’ne Ikea Davis wasn’t known two months ago, but now she’s a household name. The female Little League Baseball pitcher from Philadelphia was one of two girls in the 2014 Little League World Series and the first girl to earn a win and to successfully pitch a shutout in Little League World Series history on August 15. She plays for the Taney Dragons. Overall, she is the 18th girl to play, the sixth to get a hit, and the fourth American girl to play in the Little League World Series. On top of all of that, she is also the first Little League baseball player to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine. Davis led her team to a 4–0 victory over a team from Nashville. The phenomenal player pitched six innings, struck out eight batters, and gave up two infield hits. After the game, the Governor of Pennsylvania surprised many by predicting that she would play in professional baseball. It’s no surprise that batters are having a difficult time hitting her pitches. Especially since reportedly Davis throws a 70 miles per hour (110 km/h) fastball, which is 20 miles per hour higher than the average in her age class. She also has an almost untouchable curve ball. Her style of pitching has caused researchers to analyze deeply by us-

She became the most talked about baseball player, raised the ratings of major television networks and has been highlighted on the front page of major newspapers across the country. “She’s an inspiration to any little girl who wants to play baseball some day -- and to all the women who know firsthand the doubters and naysayers that Davis has no doubt encountered on her path to World Series history,” said Kelly Wallace in a column on CNN. “Her impact is that she will not only inspire other girls to play but she is helping to remove the ‘specialness’ of girls playing on that level,” she said. “Over time people won’t be amazed that a girl is so
forfeit their trophies due to having ineligible players, Houston’s Jack Yates Senior High School was recently awarded two championship trophies for the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 seasons. Yates previously lost to Dallas Madison in both of the championship games those years. An investigation into Dallas Madison took place after one of their players was reportedly charged with murder. Yates now has a total of four state titles including 2009 and 2010. Local radio station 97.9 the Box hosted a celebration at the school’s jam-packed auditorium. Special guests included State Representative Alma Allen, Councilmember Dwight Boykins (Distist D), the offices of State Senator Rodney Ellis and more. “Today, I presented a certificate to the basketball team and congratulated each player for this remarkable accomplishment. Throughout the season, these young men exhibited a remarkable spirit of determination, cooperation, and teamwork,” said Boykins. “I commend each of them for their part in achieving this goal and keeping their eye on the prize. Project Row Houses Celebrates 20 Years of Arts and African American Culture

“To transform the community through the celebration of art and African-American history and culture.” That is the mission of Project Row Houses. Project Row Houses is a community-based arts and culture non-profit organization that has been in Houston’s Third Ward since 1993. Artist and community activist Rick Lowe and local artists James Bettison, Bert Long, Jesse Lott, Floyd Newsum, Bert Samples, and George Smith founded Project Row Houses in order to preserve abandoned shot-gun houses and provide a way for local artists and architects to practice their craft while giving back to their community. Since its inception over 20 years ago, Project Row Houses has grown to establish an artist studio and residency program for deserving professional artists, a biannual event for local artists to display their work, an arts program for college students, an education program for youth, and a Young Mothers Residential Program for young single mothers. The artist studio provides affordable studio space to professional artists who live and work in Houston. The studio accommodates three artists at a time. The residency program provides housing for a year to a professional artist who is interested broadening the scope of their work while living and working in an urban environment. Artist Rounds are biannual events that open every March and October. Each event lasts about four months and provides an opportunity
for local artists to display their artwork in seven row houses. Each artist or group of artists are given two weeks to display their work. The seven row houses are open to the public Wednesdays - Sundays. The Summer Studios Program provides an opportunity for new artists to create work that reflects or relates to issues that are affecting the local community. Every year, seven students are selected for the program by their professors and a panel of professional artists. Students who want to be in the program should be interested in creating art in an urban environment and interacting with the Third Ward community and established Houston-based artists. The Education Program offers an art-based curriculum that aims to broaden awareness of youth through arts and culture, sharpen problem solving and analytical skills, and cultivate an appreciation for community and social responsibility. Project Row Houses recently wrapped up its 2014 Summer Arts Program. The Summer Arts Program provided visual arts, creative writing, dance, music, and gardening for children between the ages of 5 - 12. This Fall the Education Program will be hosting a Double Dutch Hip Hop class. The class will be held every Saturday until October 11 for children ages 5 - 12. The Young Mothers Residential Program has been the most important program at Project Row Houses in terms of addressing the social
problems that exists in Third Ward. The Young Mothers Residential Program was created in 1996 to address housing needs and a pregnancy outbreak among young women in Third Ward. Dr. Nelda Lewis, a Social Work professor at Texas Southern University is the founder of the Young Mothers Residential Program. Lewis grew up in a house that is across the street from what is now Project Row Houses. The program provides up to two years of housing assistance to single mothers who are 18 - 26 years old, who are employed, who are attending school full-time or part-time, who are willing to adhere to program requirements, and who have physical custody of at least one child under age 17 who regularly attends school or daycare. Once enrolled in the program, residents must pay a monthly occupancy fee that is based on their income. Assata Richards is the Manager of the Young Mothers Residential Program and also one of the first mothers to participate in the program when it launched in 1996. “I was able to earn a PhD from Penn State University as a result of participating in the program,” says Richard. Richard says that the program is vital to women’s’ success because it “provides a safety net where women and children can find support, find resources, and feel valued.” “Society often casts off young single mothers as burdens on society and believes that they are destined for a life of one failure after another.” “We don’t hold such beliefs here at Project Row Houses.” “Just because a women has a child at a young age does not mean that she is doomed
for the rest of her life.” “We make a lifetime investment in the women who go through our Young Mothers Program and support them long after they have left our program.” Other than providing housing, the Young Mothers Residential Program also provides tutoring, training, childcare, and other resources for women. Even if women are not eligible for housing through the Young Mothers Residential Program, they may be eligible for other services provided by the program. Richards recalls one time where a mother and her daughter had to leave the program because the mother had challenges meeting the programs guidelines. Soon after leaving the program, the mother and daughter were involved in a car accident. The mother died and
the daughter became permanently disabled. The maternal grandmother became the daughter’s care taker. Sadly the grandmother died from a heart attack soon after taking on the responsibility of raising her granddaughter. The girl had to adjust to a new situation all over again by moving in with other relatives. When the girl became a teenager, she went to Worthing High School. As the girl was getting ready to finish high school she was also struggling to pass the statemandated TAKS test. Thawing Out The Ice Bucket Challenge and Why Blacks Won’t Benefit
One man drops a bucket of ice water over his head and it all goes viral! With the sudden overnight spotlight on ALS also known as “Lou Gehrig” disease, one must ask themselves, “From the popularity of the ice bucket challenge, who benefits from my participation and donation?” ALS, Amyotropic Lateral Sclerosis, is a disease that involves degeneration of parts of the nervous system; it specifically affects nerve cells (neurons) in the brain and spinal cord. As a result of this assault, it eventually kills the neurons. This affects motor neurons that are responsible for muscle movement and progressively leads to paralysis. Celebrities who have fallen victim to the disease include: Hall of Fame pitcher Jim “Catfish” Hunter, Senator Jacob Javits, creator of Sesame Street Jon Stone, boxing champion Ezzard Charles, NBA Hall of Fame basketball player George Yardley, pro football player Glenn Montgomery, musician Lead Belly (Huddie Ledbetter), entertainer Dennis Day, jazz musician Charles Mingus, former vice president of the United States Henry A. Wallace and U.S. Army General Maxwell Taylor. A wealth of research has been conducted on the disease yet no cure or treatment has been discovered at this time. So who is really benefiting from this newfound “Icebucket” craze? Hopefully this is not a shocker. According to the ALS CARE Database, “60% of the people with ALS in the Database are men and 93% of patients in the Database are Caucasian.” Yes, you read it right, this is a disease that rarely affects the African American population. So why are we dumping our tens of thousands of dollars into something that we don’t even get much of a benefit from? With the hard earned monies African Americans make from their salaries, the “African
American” dollar stays in our communities less than 24 hours and exits out into the hands of those who care not for our need, let alone solutions to our specific health challenges. Instead of putting so much time, finances and energy into making sure others are able to overcome ALS, why don’t we transfer those funds into research that would benefit our loved ones such as Sickle Cell Anemia, which affects 1 in 12 of African Americans. And with September being National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, there is no better time to start than now! Like ALS, it too is considered an incurable disease and in need of more research for better options of treatment and cures. Go ahead and enjoy the ice challenge but challenge yourself to redirect your dollars! If we as a people take the ice out of our hearts towards things that are Black owned and operated, we would advance so much further as a people at a more rapid pace and receive the collective respect we constantly cry out for. Now with Caucasian’s raising over $300,000 for the cop who killed Mike Brown while African Americans are doing Water Challenges for ALS , which is a low risk disease for Blacks, who really looks like they have a concern for the plights of their people? Or how about due to the infighting between the offspring of our beloved departed Dr. King, Rosa Park’s valuable archives are now being sold to the family of Warren Buffet? Have we had enough examples yet? Let’s stop the hypocrisy and emotional tirades and back our efforts at securing justice, liberty and freedom for all and support causes and organizations that support and affect us. Others do it because that is what comes natural to them because it is a part of the natural universal order of things.

HOUSTON - Recently, the Acres Home Chamber for Business and Economic Development hosted its Monthly Business Networking Luncheon. The luncheon was held at the Beulah Ann Shepard building located at 6112 Wheatley Rd., 77091; where Mr. Roy Douglas Malonson serves as Chairman. Chairman Roy Malonson began the luncheon with his witty personality by welcoming all in attendance. He proceeded by having a raffle drawing where several guests received unexpected treats. Following, Rev. Jerold Jones rendered a word of supplication to the Lord as the luncheon was initiated. After which, Acres Home’s own Pastor Joseph Baker (Guiding Light Inspirational Baptist Church), passed the microphone around the room; so that each individual’s entity, organization, school affiliation, office and business had the opportunity to be highlighted and introduced. Amongst the gathering were: principals, educators, life-long chamber members, pastors, politicians, school board officials and directors and law enforcement authorities, just to list a few. After lunch was served and all attendees were seated in their perspective places, Harris County Constable of Precinct 1, Constable Alan Rosen was asked to approach the podium. It was there that he announced some of the initiatives that his precinct has accomplished since his election. One being tackling illegal dumping which they have made 43 cases, another he introduced as a partnership with the AHCBED being, Rape Aggression Defense (RAD). This program is for women only and has already seen much success; as all of the classes thus far have been filled. It will allow women to defend themselves in the event they are attacked on the streets or else where. It is a free
“hands-on” program headed by Officer Matthews. Also, Constable Rosen spoke on the fact that RAD Kids is another program which is in the process of being implemented; this program will serve to teach children how to deal with bullying and other life issues they may encounter. Chairman Roy Malonson also made a plea to the gathering to assist with the replacement of the panther that was stolen from the George Washington Carver High School. It is an effort that he has taken a personal obligation to spearhead and solicits the help of the community to assist in the process as well. Continuing, ‘Dean of the Senate’, Senator John Whitmire made his presence known as he introduced the speaker of the day, the illustrious and intelligent Rhonda Skillern-Jones. An honor that the senator assured attendees, he personally

requested. He addressed the fact that, “public safety is one of the main responsibilities of government, but right next to it is public education.” Thus, he felt it of utmost necessity to arrange his agenda to be at the luncheon to honor and support Mrs. Rhonda Skillern-Jones. The senator informed that, “Public Service is a calling and not everyone elected to public office is a leader.” However, he sincerely believes that Mrs. Jones is one of those elected and called to serve in such an office; and he reverenced her with much praise for a great deal of efforts that she has already accomplished. As Mrs. Rhonda Skillern-Jones approached the podium, hefty claps and rowdy praise accommodated the delighted personality that her presence brought. She first thanked the Senator, Chairman, her husband Jerold Jones and all those in attendance. Her address be-
gun by giving the statistics of the Houston ISD which consists of 211,000 children and of that number at 80 percent of that majority comes from poverished families. She informed that with this fact, it yields great challenges for the school district. She expressed that, “At one time in history the community used to able to take care of themselves. The school’s responsibility was to only educate children- those days have since passed.” However, she continued that, “Education in the school system now, looks a lot different now because the community can not afford to take care of itself and legislators are not looking out for our communities.” “Thus, our children are bringing issues from home with them. Issues that include:” “Illiteracy, absentee parents, hunger, illness, inadequate survival skills and neglect are all mechanisms that come to school in the classroom with them.” So she stated that, “Teachers

have not only become teachers, but social workers as well.” Jones expressed that most of the children Houston ISD educates, “come from single-parent, grand-parent or foster-parent household - which is the reality of what educators are faced with.” She explained that it makes teachers and administrators jobs’ a little more difficult but it does not absolve educators the obligation to fulfill the role that each child receives a quality education. Therefore, she added, “It is still our job to ensure that ALL of our children receive a quality education that is afforded to them by the Constitution of this State - no matter what they bring or where they come from.
