Ferguson, Missouri: “AMERICA’S SELFIE” By: Deric Muhammad & Sadiyah Evangelista

HOUSTON - Oxford dictionary defines a “selfie” as “a photograph taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and shared via social media”. People opt to take selfies versus traditional photos to make sure the picture conveys the best about themselves. The savage, broad daylight, shooting of 18 year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and the militarized aftermath is nothing short of one big “selfie” of life in the United States of America; specifically for Black, Brown and poor citizens. The images we saw that turned so many stomachs represent the everyday experience of urban America and its relationship with law enforcement. America truly took a picture of itself for the world to see; a

“selfie” with no filter. As we watch the injustices unfold daily in Ferguson, Missouri through the lens of America’s camera what is she communicating via this “selfie”? Let’s get this right. Michael Brown is disrespectfully ordered to “get out of the street” and was subsequently shot down for not doing so. In the days following, grieving protestors are ordered to “get out of the street” (just like Brown) and were subsequently fired upon by police using military weaponry. Look at the correlation. The death of Eric Garner in Staten Island, the result of an NYPD officer’s chokehold, is symbolic of the chokehold that Black America feels from systematic injustice. The death of Trayvon Martin, Ezell Ford, Oscar Grant and countless others are symbolic of the death of trust between Black America and America’s justice system. Through the selfie of Ferguson, America is communicating its evident disrespect, disregard and devaluation for the basic rights and the very lives of Black people 459 years after our forefathers stepped off the first slave ship in Jamestown, VA. She is communicating the slogan popularized by rapper Drake, now used as a tagline to describe life

in America for Black people: #NeverLovedUs….#NeverWill. If you study the history and origin of America’s race riots, the root cause of most of them centered around racial profiling, redlining, and lack of opportunity in education and job training which left the oppressed feeling helpless, hopeless and disenfranchised. Many who participated in these riots decried exclusion from meaningful political representation and frequently suffered abuse from law enforcement. Such is the case in Ferguson, Missouri. As we look at the “selfie” of America’s present it is reflective of her past. In 1669, the Commonwealth of Virginia in its slavery law revisions passed the Casual Slave Killing Act legalizing the murder of slaves by their masters. In 1704 South Carolina created one of the first modern police forces in America. It was nothing more than a “slave patrol” to find and capture fugitive slaves. In 1787, during the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, when the basics of her constitution were formed, there was a significant debate and then a compromise as to whether slaves were property or person. In the end the slaves were counted as only

three-fifths of a human being for the purpose of taxation and representation in Congress. We still had no constitutional rights during this time. Why is there debate in 2014 about Black people’s constitutional right to assemble, protest, speak-out, etc in Ferguson? Clear evidence of the value of Black life in America. In 1831, nearly 250 Black slaves were rounded up and killed – 55 murdered by the government, the rest lynched–in revenge during the Nat Turner slave revolt. Many of the slaves, especially the lynching victims, were selected at random. Their bodies were mutilated and displayed on stakes as a warning to all slaves who might choose to protest. Michael Brown’s murdered lifeless body was left in the street for hours for all too see. It served, knowingly or unknowingly, as a warning to every Black person in the country and clear evidence of the value of Black life in America. Jim Crow laws were racial segregation laws enacted between 1876 and 1965 in the United States at the state and local level. They mandated de jure racial segregation in all public facilities in Southern states of the former Confederacy, which, starting in 1890, a “separate but equal” status for Blacks in America. The separation in practice led to conditions for Blacks that were inferior to those provided for Whites, systematizing a number of economic, educational and social disadvantages. De jure segregation mainly applied to the Southern United States while Northern segregation was generally de facto — patterns of segregation in housing enforced by covenants, bank lending practices and job discrimination, including discriminatory union practices for decades. Clear evidence of the value of Black life in America. We would be remiss in our duty if we did not point out the pitiful truth that everything you see taking place in Ferguson, Missouri is happening in real time under

the administration of a Black U.S. President who promised the country CHANGE. Measure what we see in Ferguson today against our ancestors’ aforementioned experience in this country. America’s “Selfie” is communicating with unmistakable clarity that NOTHING HAS CHANGED. When a person takes a selfie that they dislike, it is usually deleted. He or she makes adjustments, retakes the picture and, if approved, shares it with the world. While America cannot delete her past history of slavery, oppression, disenfranchisement and mass murder she has been given an opportunity to make adjustments. Her next selfie does not have to look like her last. If she refuses to make those adjustments, at some point what you see in Ferguson you will see in every city throughout the United States of America. Justice for the Black, Brown, poor and oppressed is America’s final exam. There will be no make-up. How the “Mike Brown” case and the Ferguson debacle is handled will say a lot about whether change is on the horizon. We advise Black America to proceed as if things will not change, unless we change them. The call is for unity among Black people. The call is for us to combine our economic and intellectual resources to build something for ourselves. Holder Has a Compelling Case in the Brown Killing Earl Ofari Hutchinson Author & Political Analyst

Attorney General Eric Holder has a compelling federal case in the Michael Brown killing if he decides to bring civil rights charges against Ferguson, Missouri cop Darren Wilson. He’s certainly taken almost unprecedented lightning fast first steps in that direction. He’s got a phalanx of FBI agents assigned to the case. He’s authorized an autopsy by a crack medical examiner from the military. He personally travelled to the city to review procedures with civil rights division attorneys and investigators. None of this would have been done without the personal approval of President Obama who already has made more statements on the Ferguson furor and the Brown killing than he has on any other racially charged flashpoint issue during his White House tenure. There are several factors within federal law that Holder has to look at to make the final decision whether to go forward with a prosecution. There has to be a “compelling interest” that the defendant’s conduct could constitute a federal offense and that there is sufficient evidence against the defendant that the government can obtain a conviction. There are clear elements of each of these hard federal prosecution requirements in the Brown killing. The compelling interest is probably the easiest of the requisites to satisfy. He was not charged with a crime by Wilson. He was stopped by all accounts for jaywalking. The allegations that Brown was a suspect in a convenience store heist, and that he smoked marijuana, and even that he may have actually had some physical altercation with Warren came way after the fact. Multiple eyewit-

nesses have been absolutely clear on this crucial point. He was shot on the ground with his hands up. An independent autopsy has confirmed that Brown could not have been shot during a scuffle as Wilson, police, and an anonymous eyewitness claim. The key point is that he was on a public thoroughfare when he was killed. The right to freedom of movement without the danger of undue harm is a fundamental right that’s enshrined in constitutional law and public policy. It’s inviolate. The courts have repeatedly upheld a citizen’s right to freedom of access and movement in public places. Though there was no apparent racial motive in Wilson confronting Brown, his action clearly violated Brown’s right to exercise his freedom of movement. This directly impacts on an individual’s right to life and liberty. This civil right was violated the moment Wilson presumed that a young Black man walking in a public thoroughfare had committed a crime. The safeguard of that right must be a fundamental concern of federal prosecutors. The Brown killing case also strongly pointed to systemic issues of excessive force by police. The obvious excessive force that was used was the slaying of Brown. This strikes to the heart of another basic right of citizens, namely the right to life and liberty, and again the freedom from undue harm. His killing once more raised deeply troubling questions about the power of the law to protect citizens from their unimpeded right to life and safety. Federal prosecutors play a major role in insuring that where there’s the suspicion that an individual’s rights might have been violated solely because of their race and gender that the power of federal law is brought to bear to insure that right is protected. Wilson is a police officer and the charge that he abused his power in killing Brown under the color of law is the linchpin of federal prosecutions of local police officers. Source: Huffington Post

Only People Power Protests Can Save Black & Browns from “Death by Police”

he horror of seeing Michael Brown’s lifeless body lying in the street bleeding after being shot dead by police and to see police standing over him like a trophy kill is alarming to say the least. I am sure when a Black man gets up in the morning and puts on clothes to go out of the house, the last thing on his mind is getting shot at or killed by police. Leaving your home today as a Black male and surviving the day is a victory within itself. The shooting of Michael Brown in Missouri and the choking of Eric Garner in New York signal the new dangers of “Death by Police” in society, especially if you happen to be a Black male. In the May 26 - June 3, 2014 edition of African-American News&Issues, we warned of the open season on Blacks and the disrespect and lack of compassion the police have for Blacks, especially Black males. Thanks to some great work by Operation Ghetto Storm, we all stood forewarned about events leading up to the tragic deaths of Brown and Garner that now dominate headlines, talk shows and is lighting up social media. It is dangerous to be Black in America because the resentment, racism, stereotypes and outright prejudice refuses to subside. It is no longer like waves beating on the shoreline, it has become a great tidal wave lead by law enforcement that threatens to cleanse our communities of African American males in the interest of the future of Democracy. We MUST Understand the fact that a Black person is killed at the hands of police or vigilante security forces every 25 hours somewhere

in America. The trend continues to increase from one ever 28 hours in 2012 to now every 25 hours. That is nearly one Black person every day in 2014!!! It is clearly open season on Black people and the police are finding some rich killing fields, especially in Texas, Louisiana, California, New York and Illinois. We cannot and must not be lulled into thinking that it doesn’t affect you. Michael Brown and Eric Garner were Black men. Members of the Black race and part of our Black family!!! Houston has seen two police killings of Black males similar to Brown and Garner in the person on Michael Garrett Blair and Jordan Baker. Both Black men and both unarmed. Both not threatening anyone when confronted, but ended up with at the funeral home because some cop played God and decided to execute some mother’s baby. According to the study, most police justify their shooting claiming they “felt threatened” while others like to use the excuse that suspects “lunged”, reached for a waistband or pointed something at them. The sad part is that much of these shooting are done without holding officers accountable. Many officers see nothing more than a short vacation with pay while investigations are ongoing. Some are allowed to go on business as usual. A nation wonders why there is no justice and no peace. You cannot have peace without respect. There are those who do not respect the Black man in the White House. If they disrespect a Black president, you surely cannot expect them to respect a Black man walking on the street. It is a culture of disrespect that can no longer be tolerated. Civil Disobedience is one of the

only ways to organize and send a strong message that police brutality and the repression of Black and Brown communities must end. It ensures that politicians hear the call for change loud, united and clear. Our voices are as powerful today as the voices of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., John Lewis, Virgil Wood and Daisy Bates and others during the Civil Rights Movement. It is a great start seeing young people and old alike stand up in solidarity in Houston, Chicago, St. Louis, New York, Los Angeles and other cities against the wiles of the police against Black and Brown citizens. It is time to identify the bad apples, the racist cops, the haters and the Barney Fife’s in police departments and use our power as citizens to demand more screening, mental health testing and more training. We must also demand that elected officials (who are elected by the people) make policy that protects citizens and guarantees prosecution of rogue and trigger happy cops that kill Blacks and Browns. We MUST Understand the urgency of change and involvement in civil disobedience. Only People Power Protests Can Save Black & Browns from “Death by Police” Failing to make that difference now and failure to demand that police chiefs remove and strip the badges from these bad officers means another Black man will be shot down and another mother soon will lose a son. “An individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law” - Martin Luther King Jr. Civil Disobedience is the refusal to obey governmental demands or commands especially as a nonviolent and usually collective means of forcing concessions from the government. It becomes the only alternative – the only voice – the only way to get the attention of a government dull of hearing and indifferent to the issues, concerns and complaints of its citizenry. It sometimes is the only way to get the ruling body to look at itself in the mirror and see the ugly injustices that exists before us. The blatant and tragic shooting death of Michael Brown at the hands of the Ferguson, Missouri police is a clear reminder that the upsurge in violence is not restricted to the Middle East or any one place. It has happened here before, and without changes in law enforcement policy, will happen again in the near future in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin and some other smaller Black neighborhood or community. The protests and civil disobedience in wake of the Brown shooting is a direct result of the Ferguson community expressing itself and now the government is dealing with the principle of protest that calls for a people to stand up and be counted. Dr. King once said, “One has not only a legal, but a moral TX- 4

responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.” The shooting of unarmed Black men is unjust. The fact that over 2 million Black men are incarcerated – a substantial percentage falsely accused and identified is unjust. The racism and discrimination that prevents second chances and fresh starts unjust. The imbalance in credit, loans and housing is unjust. Sending the National Guard into Black communities with tanks and M-16’s to control people crying out for justice is unjust. These images should be troubling to Black Americans and a wake-up call for all of America. Bringing the battlefield to our communities – both in terms of weaponry and tactics – is a threat to our freedom as great as any coming from outside our borders. In the case of the Michael Brown’s killing, something must be done to protect young AfricanAmerican males from being unjustly hunted down and assassinated by trigger-happy policemen hiding behind fear, badge and a gun waiting for opportunities to strike out and kill. In a society of laws, police are not the judge, jury and executioners. Government must be reminded that the Constitution of the United States protects the rights of all citizens to protest and also provides due process in the event a crime is committed or laws are broken. When government fails to guarantee that right to every citizen, Black, White and Brown, democracy is at risk. Civil Disobedience is that one safety valve that allows citizens in a free democracy to demonstrate and

challenge poorly administered laws or voice disagreement over abuses of laws. Unfortunately, the historic reaction to civil disobedience and protests have not always been accepted well by the powers that be. America’s tainted past is full of examples about Black civil disobedience that was put down. It has always been met with force and centered on crushing, killing or destroying rebellion and restoring order using police force in riot gear or in full military gear armed with assault rifles. Also, it is not uncommon play to see officials call out the National Guard troops, tanks and equipment in an effort to control Blacks and ensure compliance. 1963 - The Birmingham campaign was a movement organized in early 1963 by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) to bring attention to the integration efforts of African Americans in Birmingham, Alabama. Led by Martin Luther King, Jr. and others, the campaign of nonviolent direct actions culminated in widely publicized confrontations between Black youth and White civic authorities, and eventually led the municipal government to change the city’s discrimination laws. In the early 1960s, Birmingham was one of the most racially divided cities in the United States, both as enforced by law and culturally. Black citizens faced legal and economic disparities, and violent retribution when they attempted to draw attention to their problems. Protests in Birmingham began with a boycott meant to pressure business leaders to open employment to people of all

races and end segregation in public facilities, restaurants, and stores. When business leaders resisted the boycott, SCLC organizer Wyatt Tee Walker and Birmingham native Fred Shuttlesworth began what they called Project C, a series of sit-ins and marches intended to provoke mass arrests. When the campaign ran low on adult volunteers, SCLC coordinator James Bevel trained and directed high school, college, and elementary school students to participate in the demonstrations, which resulted in over a thousand arrests. As the jails and holding areas filled with arrested students, the Birmingham Police Department, led by Eugene “Bull” Connor, used high-pressure water jets and police attack dogs on the children and bystanders. Not all of the demonstrators were peaceful, despite the avowed intentions of the SCLC. In some cases, Black “bystanders” not committed to nonviolence retaliated against the police. King and the SCLC drew both criticism and praise for allowing children to participate and be put in harm’s way. - Wikapedia 1965 - On “Bloody Sunday,” March 7, 1965, some 600 civil rights marchers headed east out of Selma on U.S. Route 80. Armed officers attacked peaceful civil rights demonstrators attempting to march to the state capita They got only as far as the Edmund Pettus Bridge six blocks away, where state and local lawmen attacked them with billy clubs and tear gas and drove them back into Selma. Two days later on March 9, Martin Luther King, Jr., led a “symbolic” march to the bridge. 1965 - On Wednesday, 11 August 1965, Marquette Frye, a 21-year-old Black man, was arrested for drunk driving on the edge of Los Angeles’ Watts neighborhood. The ensuing struggle during his arrest sparked off 6 days of rioting, resulting in 34 deaths, over 1,000 injuries, nearly 4,000 arrests, and the destruction of property valued at $40 million. On 17 August 1965, Martin Luther King arrived in Los Angeles in the aftermath of the riots. The Watts Riot, which raged for six days and resulted in more than forty million dollars worth

of property damage, was both the largest and costliest urban rebellion of the Civil Rights era. The riot spurred from an incident on August 11, 1965 when Marquette Frye, a young African American motorist, was pulled over and arrested by Lee W. Minikus, a White California Highway Patrolman, for suspicion of driving while intoxicated. As a crowd on onlookers gathered at the scene of Frye’s arrest, strained tensions between police officers and the crowd erupted in a violent exchange. The outbreak of violence that followed Frye’s arrest immediately touched off a large-scale riot centered in the commercial section of Watts, a deeply impoverished African American neighborhood in South Central Los Angeles. For several days, rioters overturned and burned automobiles and looted and damaged grocery stores, liquor stores, department stores, and pawnshops. Over the course of the six-day riot, over 14,000 California National Guard troops were mobilized in South Los Angeles and a curfew zone encompassing over forty-five miles was established in an attempt to restore public order. All told, the rioting claimed the lives of thirtyfour people, resulted in more than one thousand reported injuries, and almost four thousand arrests before order was restored on August 17. Throughout the crisis, public officials advanced the argument that the riot was the work outside agitators; however, an official investigation, prompted by Governor Pat Brown, found that the riot was a result of the Watts community’s longstanding grievances and growing discontentment with high unemployment rates, substandard housing, and inadequate schools. “All Power to the People”: Fifth Ward Stands Ground on Open Carry & Police Brutality

Houston - The word on the street in Fifth Ward is “All Power to the People” and stand your ground on Open Carry and police brutality. Citizens made it clear that it is tired of the police shooting and killing Black children in the streets of America’s cities and town. “It is time to make a change and stand up,” Shantel Beverly said. They are killing too many of our little brothers.” Beverly, like many others believe Ferguson is an example of Police not caring about Black people. “We are here for support and to let people know it is time to take a stand!,” she said. As the group gathered, the protest turned into a complete display of solidarity, not only for Fifth Ward residents, but Black Houstonians from Acres Home, Third Ward, Southeast, Sunnyside, South Park and East Houston who came out to support the Fifth Ward and who raises awareness that Blacks need to be aware that what happened in Ferguson, Missouri in the shooting of Michael Brown can take place on Houston streets. On Aug 9, Michael Brown was shot to death by a Ferguson Police officer. The shooting occurred around noon in Ferguson, Mo., a suburb of St. Louis, as Brown and a friend walked down a street. Brown becomes the latest statistic in the long string of sins committed by police departments across America. One begs the question whether it is even safe for Black men to walk the streets given the current trend of unprovoked attacks. “All youngsters that have been killed is a shame. Our government is allowing this to go on and it is ridiculous,” Patrick Davis said. “I believe that it is going to take more foot soldiers to step up in this fight and change the direction

of our people.” The killing has caused protests and demonstrations to erupt in cities all over the country and even has caught the attention of the White House and members of Congress. The New Black Panther Party, NBUF and community supporters held the self defense and peace demonstration at Lockwood and Lyons at noon Saturday and focused on Black people not only knowing their rights but also on demanding justice for each and every incident of police brutality and killing across America. Brother Robert Muhammad of Muhammad Mosque No. 45 compared the actions of the Ferguson Police in the wake of the Michael Brown shooting death and the vigilantes of Open Carry Texas to an invasion of the Black community. He shared the idea of the strategic plans involving a highway systems across this country that are designed to cut off and isolate Black communities from each other in time of crisis – even in Houston. “We need to think long term and big picture,” Muhammad said. “We need to understand this is a war and we must be independent and grow our own food and support ourselves.” He said the young generation on the streets today are fearless and are the new warriors carrying the torch of freedom for Black people. “The youth in Ferguson have shown the whole world what has been brewing in us for the last 450 years,” he said. “They stood up and should motivate us to stand up.” He said years of fighting guns in communities, the war on drugs and violence in Black neighborhoods is all part of a plan to incriminate young Blacks, eliminate our leaders and future leaders and add to the roles of the prison industrial complex.

“The war is on us,” he said. “Our leaders are locked up in federal prisons, Texas prison and our women and children are on the new reservations. (projects and Black communities)” He warned that police and civil governments are not interested in negotiation or collaboration with the Black, but Ferguson shows that authorities want to meet every challenge with a military occupying force. He also noted that the Open Carry proponents are people on the ready to back up law enforcement and use their guns and ammo against the Black community in posse style formations or vigilante fashion. The calls from the New Black Panther Party, the Nation of Islam and National Black United Front members was a call for all Black communities to unite, stand up and ensure voices are heard from Houston City Hall to the State Capitol in Austin to stop treading on us and citizen rights. Sister Krystal Muhammad, National Chairwoman of the New Black Panther Party, called for unity and working together to develop positive plans to help young Black men succeed. She also warned that Blacks and Browns must be apprised of the strategy involving

dividing and controlling the community as well as ridding the nation of its Black males through death and incarceration. She promoted the value of AfricanAmerican history and its connection to who we are as a nation. “There are our children being shot down in the streets. We know the plan and we are at war trying to stop it,” she told supporters. “What is happening in Ferguson and all over is ethnic cleansing and genocide. We just have not been fighting back in a strategic and united way.” She said the issues are no longer justice issues, but human rights violations that need the attention of the United Nations and World Courts. “The police and vigilantes have been murdering us and nothing is being done,” she said.“It is time to turn it up and take a stand against insurgents and insurgency into our community.” To continue reading visit us online @ www.aframnews.com By Darwin Campbell, African-American News&Issues

A proud native of Chicago, Illinois and a product of Emmanuel Baptist Church where Dr. L.K. Curry served as pastor, Cosby received the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religion and English from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, the Master of Divinity Degree in Homiletics and Christian Education from the Morehouse School of Religion at the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta, Georgia and the Doctor of Ministry Degree in Homiletics from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Lombard, Illinois. Dr. Cosby is married to his high school sweetheart, Mrs. Audrey Marie Cosby, and they have been blessed with three beautiful daughters, Adrienne Marie, Ashley Marie and Aliyah Marie and two sons, Marcus D., II and Matthew D. Cosby. As the successor to the Founding Pastor of Wheeler Avenue, Dr. William A. Lawson, Pastor Cosby has been blessed to continue the ministry of this intentionally intergenerational congregation in the inner city of Houston, Texas since 2004, having served as Associate Pastor since 1998. Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Individual cases and outbreaks of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) occur around the world. In countries with temperate (varying) climates, cases occur more often in the spring to fall. Since 1997, large outbreaks of HFMD caused by enterovirus 71 have been reported mostly in children in east and Southeast Asia. In these outbreaks, most children have typical symptoms of HFMD and recover without health complications However, a small number of people with this disease develop severe complications requiring hospitalization or even causing death. Studies are being done to understand why these outbreaks occur and why some people have severe disease. Research is also being done to develop treatments and vaccines to help prevent HFMD in the future. About HFMD Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a common viral illness that usually affects infants and children younger than 5 years old. However, it can sometimes occur in adults. Symptoms of hand, foot, and mouth disease include fever, blister-like sores in the mouth (herpangina), and a skin rash. Hand, foot, and mouth disease is caused by viruses that belong to the Enterovirus genus (group). This group of viruses includes polioviruses, coxsackieviruses, echoviruses, and enteroviruses. Coxsackievirus A16 is the most common cause of hand, foot, and mouth disease in the United States, but other coxsackieviruses have been associated with the illness. Enterovirus 71 has also been associated with hand, foot, and mouth disease and outbreaks of this disease. Hand, foot, and mouth disease is often confused with foot-and-mouth

disease (also called hoof-and-mouth disease), a disease of cattle, sheep, and swine. However, the two diseases are caused by different viruses and are not related. Humans do not get the animal disease, and animals do not get the human disease. Signs and Symptoms Hand, foot, and mouth disease usually starts with a fever, poor appetite, a vague feeling of being unwell (malaise), and sore throat. One or 2 days after fever starts, painful sores usually develop in the mouth (herpangina). They begin as small red spots that blister and that often become ulcers. The sores are often in the back of the mouth. A skin rash develops over 1 to 2 days. The rash has ﬂat or raised red spots, sometimes with blisters. The rash is usually on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet; it may also appear on the knees, elbows, buttocks or genital area. Some people, especially young children, may get dehydrated if they are not able to swallow enough liquids because of painful mouth sores. Persons infected with the viruses that cause hand, foot, and mouth disease may not get all the symptoms of the disease. They may only get mouth sores or skin rash. Transmission The viruses that cause hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) can be found in an infected person’s: nose and throat secretions (such as saliva, sputum, or nasal mucus), blister ﬂuid, and feces (stool). An infected person may spread the viruses that cause hand, foot, and mouth disease through: close personal contact, the air (through coughing or sneezing), contact with feces, contaminated objects and surfaces. For example, you might get infected by kissing someone who has hand, foot, and mouth disease or by touching a doorknob that has viruses on it then touching your eyes, mouth or nose. It is possible to get infected with the viruses that cause hand, foot, and mouth disease if you swallow recreational water, such as water in swimming pools. However, this

is not very common. This is more likely to happen if the water becomes contaminated with feces from a person who has hand, foot, and mouth disease, and is not properly treated with chlorine. Generally, a person with hand, foot, and mouth disease is most contagious during the ﬁrst week of illness. People can sometimes be contagious for days or weeks after symptoms go away. Some people, especially adults, who get infected with the viruses that cause hand, foot, and mouth disease may not develop any symptoms. However, they may still be contagious. This is why people should always try to maintain good hygiene (e.g. handwashing) so they can minimize their chance of spreading or getting infections.

You should stay home while you are sick with hand, foot, and mouth disease. Talk with your healthcare provider if you are not sure when you should return to work or school. The same applies to children returning to daycare. Hand, foot, and mouth disease is not transmitted to or from pets or other animals. Diagnosis Hand, foot, and mouth disease is one of many infections that cause mouth sores. Health care providers can usually tell the difference between mouth sores caused by hand, foot, and mouth disease and other causes by considering - how old the patient is, what symptoms the patient has, and how the rash and mouth sores look.
