it comes to how PTSD could have played a role in the police killings in Dallas and Baton Rouge. The current climate of race relations in the United States is appalling right now. Not many people want to suggest that the shooters, both military veterans, could have possibly suffered from this disorder. When the images and videos of these murderers are flashed across our television screens, all that America notices is that they were Black. This is not a benign statement bent on causing more tension between the races, but it is one that has been at the forefront for years. As soon as the American public receives word that “another” mass shooting has occurred, the first question that goes through the minds of many of our citizens is: “I wonder what color he (the perpetrator) is?’ That’s the land we live in today… The Wounded Warrior Project is a charity and veterans service organization that offers a variety of programs, services and events for wounded veterans of the military actions following September 11, 2001. I went to the Wounded Warrior Homes website and the first message I noticed was this: “Do You Know How Many Veterans Suffer from PTSD? In a recent study by the Center for Health Military Research, they’ve shared that out of the 1.64 million service members who had been deployed for Afghanistan and Iraq as of October 2007, they estimate that approximately 300,000 individuals suffer from PTSD, Major Depressive Disorder, or (Traumatic Brain Injury) TBI.” It goes on to say that “Every veteran has a story. Sometimes it’s the wounds that are unseen that hurt the most. We take a stand for veterans who stood for our freedoms.” It was the last part of their message that enlightened me the most, causing me to do more research on PTSD: “PTSD can be linked to a reaction to trauma; and TBI can be from a blast exposure or other head injury. Unfortunately, these
conditions are often invisible to the eye. Unlike the physical wounds of war, these conditions remain invisible to other service members, to family members, and to society in general. All three conditions affect mood, thoughts, and behavior; yet these wounds often go unrecognized and unacknowledged.” Could Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Be Responsible for The Deaths of OUR Police at The Hands of OUR Veterans? THAT is the question. Eddie Ray Routh was a 25-yearold ex-marine who was responsible in killing “The American Sniper”, Chris Kyle who was a former Navy Seal. On April 2nd, 2014, 34-yearold Army Specialist, Ivan Lopez, killed three people and wounded fourteen at Fort Hood, Texas. Media reports suggests they both suffered from PTSD. Both were non-Black. Are our soldiers getting the help they need upon exiting their military service? In a racist society bent on colorizing murder and how it occurs, many online “experts” shrieked at the notion that two African-American men who served their country honorably and by media accounts had no criminal records, could commit these heinous crimes without the possibility of both suffering from PTSD. That, within itself, is ludicrous. They too, should be given the benefit of a doubt. No sane person, in my opinion, hates OUR police that much to execute them in cold blood. Such is the rhetoric blazing across social media outlets like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. We will never know what these men were truly going through, death has snatched that opportunity from us. Justifiably so, to many people. But, out there somewhere lies another veteran who is suffering from PostTraumatic Stress Disorder. He/she could be your neighbor, co-worker, teacher, preacher, husband/wife, or relative. Power Recap Season 3 Episode 2 – “Itʻs Never Over” Wandaring Outloud Media By LaWanda Thomas
A
fter last’s week’s revelation that Lobos isn’t dead, it’s not surprising that we find Ghost tossing, turning and checking his phone in bed in this week’s episode. Unable to sleep, Ghost has an impromptu meeting with Proctor and asks him to “get a message” to Lobos. Ghost makes contact with the inmate who was supposed to kill Lobos. He reports back through Proctor that all he could find was a death certificate for Lobos. Proctor figures out that they must be prosecuting Lobos as a John Doe and tells Ghost the best way to find Lobos is to ask Angela. Ghost refuses but Proctors advises him to be more concerned with protecting himself, not Angela. Meanwhile, at the US Attorney’s office, Mike is getting pressed on all sides. Angela suggests that they bring in the files from other states to strengthen the case against Lobos. Then Saxe tells Mike that he is going to investigate the hit on Lobos to gather more evidence against Jimenez. Mike reports back to Lobos’ henchman who reminds Mike that it’s his job to make problems go away and tells him to handle it or else. Mike is visibly stressed. Tommy hasn’t returned his call so Ghost solicits Tasha’s help in reaching out to him. Tasha goes to Tommy’s condo to hand deliver a check for his liquidated share of the business. Holly nearly closes the door on Tasha until Tasha shoves the check in her face. Tasha tells Holly the check isn’t for her and that Tommy knows where to find her if he wants his money. Tommy and Tasha meet up later and Tommy finally tells Tasha that he know that she and Ghost setup Kanan. Tasha admits it and tells Tommy it was for his own good and that Tommy should have told her that Ghost was cheating on her with Angela. Tommy claps back that Ghost
was screwing Angela for Tasha’s own good. Tasha gets the last word as she leaves Tommy sitting at the table alone; she tells Tommy that Ghost screwed them both over looking out for his own good. Tasha has a busy day. She drops by Angela’s apartment unannounced to make sure the place is child proof and to leave some items and babysitting instructions for Angela. Tasha lets her know that the kids and Ghost are a package deal. Tasha also stops by the salon to see Keisha who notices that Tasha is not wearing her wedding ring. Tasha says she isn’t pressed for money but admits she sold it because she is not taking any chances. Keisha offers to let Tasha do her books. Tasha says no and lets Keisha get back to weaving hair. Andre struggles to play it straight at the club. He almost comes to blows with a guest DJ only to lose the DJ to a nearby club because he didn’t get the DJ to sign the contract as instructed to by Ghost. Andre wants to get physical with the new club owners who undermined Ghost but Ghost tells Andre that no response is the best response for now until he figures out how to hit back. With Kaine On The Ticket, Democrats Can And Should Put Race Back On The Table Earl Ofari Hutchinson Author &
The hard and fast rule in presidential politics since the 1960s is that you don’t talk frankly about race on the campaign trail. Presumptive Democratic Vice Presidential Candidate Tim Kaine can break that rule. Kaine got his start as a civil rights lawyer, and indeed notes that as a point of pride on his political bio sheet. His relentless fights against discrimination in housing, the insurance business and education in one-time arch segregationist Virginia is well-known. He is not the LBJ of presidential politics, but he’s about as close as it gets to a candidate on the ticket with a civil rights pedigree that he doesn’t run from. The rule that has forbade Democratic presidential candidates to talk about racial issues, put in place by the GOP four decades ago, was instituted for one reason, and that was to insure dominance of the White House and national politics. GOP presidential candidates set the tone for this during the Nixon years. He stood racial politics on its head with a hard court of Southern white males who were in apoplectic rage over civil rights. Nixon tarred Democrats as the party that supposedly pandered shamelessly to Blacks and minorities and ignored Whites. The charge hit home. The message was that talking about civil rights was a surefire prescription for defeat. At the same time, Nixon and subsequent GOP presidential candidates stole a huge page from the playbook of George Wallace and invented a spectacular array of wink-and-nod, racially loaded code words and phrases to paint a horrific picture of Democrats supposedly giving the governmental company store away in run-away entitlements, massive spending on job, welfare and social programs to Blacks, and stocking the courts and administrative posts with Blacks and Hispanics — all, of course, at the expense of hard-working, over taxed and ignored, blue collar and sub-
urban whites. The GOP doubled down on this by making crime, law and order, and tough military prowess, the center piece of their presidential campaigns. Trump follows pretty much the same script. His naked race baiting started when he piled in on the phony, fraudulent issue of Obama’s birth certificate in 2012. He picked up steam with his slur of Muslims, immigrants and Mexicans. He piled on even more with his broken-record chant of the old reliable, arch race-baiting code slogans, “law and order” and “crime in the streets,” styling himself as the candidate who would clean up the streets. He has made it brutally clear that he banks on conservative, less educated, blue collar White males, and a wide stratum of fearful, angry and supposedly marginalized suburban whites to propel him into the White House. Polls show that he has a top heavy bulge among these voters over Clinton. Race is never openly talked about as the reason for this. But it doesn’t have to be, it’s understood and it drives the fears and anxiety among Trump’s backers. Kaine has two qualities that can counter Trump’s blatant race baiting. One is he’s a white male and a Southerner. But he’s also a Democrat and a liberal centrist, staunch civil rights proponent. This represents everything the Trump crowd loathes. These are assets. By talking proudly about his civil rights advocacy as an attorney, mayor, governor and Senator, this would do much to insure that African-American and Hispanic voters turn Clinton’s White House bid into the same type of crusade that they did with Obama. This is not a small point. There is deep distrust and some anger among many blacks about Clinton’s supposed tout of hubby Bill’s crime bills, welfare reform, and GOP lite pander to white middle class voters with his big emphasis on whittling down government. This burst into a mini-firestorm at one point during her Democratic presidential primary joust with Bernie Sanders when Black Lives Matter protesters repeatedly confronted Clinton over her calling violent criminals “super predators” presumably meaning Blacks. YES BLACK LIVES MATTER SO STOP KILLING EACH OTHER!
ere lately, there has been much controversy and talk in the media and various other outlets regarding the, “Black Lives Matters” movement. I must state that I am absolutely in favor of the Black Lives Matters movement all the way around. But what I want to deal with in this editorial is the exact sentiments that, “YES!” Black Lives do Matter. They matter rather the police kills Black lives and they matter even when Black people kill other Black people. We MUST Understand that this cannot be a one-sided affair. I think in the religious world the term is, “HYPOCRITE”! As members of the Black community we need to get the message out that, “WE HAVE GOT TO STOP KILLING EACH OTHER!!!” Does it make it right for others to kill at will just because they see us doing the same thing to one another? Hell NO! But at the same time we also have to practice what we preaching ourselves. Now when it comes to police officials just going around shooting Black people, it is totally outrageous that what is happening to our people is becoming a norm. It’s sad to say but even now when they make the reports on the news, you hear reporters say, “In another Black shooting by a police officer or official” or something similar. I mean it’s like it’s just another day at the park, the way that this has become so commonly reported. Now, in regards to these police officers I ain’t the smartest one on the block but I don’t know if I misread these badges wrong or not. I thought it was supposed to read, “Serve and Protect”. But, somewhere on there I must have missed the labeling, “Serve, Protect and Kill”. This is just something that is happening all too often and on a massive scale in several places. It seems like it is welcomed and accepted because there are no
repercussions for the people that are committing these crimes. The latest example rests in the case of the charges against the final three police officers in Baltimore which were recently dismissed for killing Freddie Gray. Gray was a victim of a spinal injury which occurred in the back of a police transport van. He died a week after sustaining these injuries while in police custody. The incident happened last year in April and over a year later, it’s back to business as normal for these perpetrators with guns. The judicial system is not doing any better in showing that Black Lives Matter by constantly sweeping these acts under the rug as if it’s no big thing. While I’m on the subject, I am glad to see that Basketball Legend, Michael Jordan has finally stepped up to the plate and responded on the issue as well. In a recent report it was announced that he was donating $2 million dollars to aid in the ongoing situation. He is giving, $1 million dollars to the Institute for Community-Police Relations and the other to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Legal Defense Fund. He offered words regarding his personal experience with losing his father to acts of violence. He said, “As a proud American, a father who lost his own dad in a senseless act of violence, and a Black man, I have been deeply troubled by the deaths of African-Americans at the hands of law enforcement and angered by the cowardly and hateful targeting and killing of police officers.” His father was murdered in 1993 in a carjacking in North Carolina. So he expressed his sentiments of how no nonsense killings like the ones that have been happening more rapidly here lately, have impacted him as well. During his delivery he went on to inform that, “Over the past three

decades I have seen up close the dedication of the law enforcement officers who protect me and my family.” He continued, “I have the greatest respect for their sacrifice and service. I also recognize that for many people of color their experiences with law enforcement have been different than mine. I have decided to speak out in the hope that we can come together as Americans, and through peaceful dialogue and education, achieve constructive change.” I have much respect for Jordan standing up and speaking out against the ills that have plagued and continues to invade our communities. Concluding, because AfricanAmerican News&Issues is a publication that thrives off of highlighting both current and historical realities affecting our communities; this is a subject that I felt I absolutely had to deal with. I must reiterate that, it is a problem whenever members from our community are killed regardless of who does the killing. It is no justification that because Blacks kill Blacks that officials can do whatever they want, whenever they want. But at the same time we have got to stop killing our own and I really must stress emphasis on this. Think about it… What kind of regard do you think that they will have for our lives if they believe that we don’t have any regard for our lives ourselves? Addressing the readers of our faithful and loyal audience, let us resonate and exemplify that Black Lives do Matter and make it known to our community that we should not be hypocrites and exclude our own people out of this equation! HOUSTON – “The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power. Because they control the minds of the masses.” Over half a century later, these most prophetic words of Malcolm X still reign true. As it is, “media” has become the leading mind control element of the entire world. Some chose to use the outlet to destroy, dilute and encourage us in a way that will fasten us to believe how they want us to view life and the world that surrounds us. However, two notable personalities of our community have chosen through media, to empower, strengthen and unify the African-American community. Mr. Morris Parsons and Mr. Oscar Hines are two of the main principles which unifies the mobility and establishment of KYND Radio and Genuine Journey Studios. Coupled with decades of experience in progressive talk radio, live production, stage management and a plethora of other talents; these entities offer a strong solidified voice for African-Americans to be heard and seen throughout the Houston, surrounding areas and onward. Recently, AfricanAmerican News&Issues was privileged to interview the pair which represents the Sales and General Management team of KYND Radio. Morris Parsons is the General Manager and Oscar Hines serves as General Sales Manager. MORRIS PARSONS Originally from the state of Alabama, Parsons is a United States Army veteran. He toured with Sound Stage Production a Company in Providence, Rhode Island, where he gained a great deal of his media experience. In past, he was the owner of Whole 9 Yards Productions. There, he produced technical operational flow charts for events and system installations and provided overall event manage-

ment for large and small concerts. Upon relocating to Houston, he worked in several churches in the area. He served as Director of Audio Technology at New Light Christian Center under the leadership of Dr. I.V. Hilliard, Ministry Staff Director for Bishop James Dixon as well as other churches in the Houston community. He has several decades of experience in Live Production and Stage Management. Though Parsons chooses to operate, “behind the scenes” he is an integral part of making the companies work. During our interview he highlighted the strengths that each member of the company encompasses. He said, “Each member of the Management Team utilizes their unique talents to ensure that the station operates as efficiently as possible. Hines specializes in the Sales aspect side to secure that the right narrative is distributed throughout the community in a sales posture. Program Director Paris Eley, strides in concert with the role of assuring that a quality product is delivered on air.” Meanwhile, he oversees that all necessary personnel, equipment and relationships are in place on the service side of things. When asked of advice to the Black community he elaborated on the rebuilding of the African-American family. He said, “We need to return back to the family values and building that core family of understanding who your relatives are.” He continued, “Right now we’re not as united as we need to be, there are some things that are inherently attributed to each family - and each family has a unique thing that it does.” He went on to explain that, “ Unless you’re connected to that family you won’t know what that unique thing is – some families are born athletes, artists, singers and musicians, etc, and you see that through generation after generation.” He concluded, “If you separate from that

you don’t get the nurturing that you need to have to have that gift to actually be nurtured; so that it can produce the expected return that was placed in you when that gift was there.” OSCAR HINES Born in Costa Rica and raised in New York City, Hines moved to Houston in the mid 80’s. He developed a passion for Broadcasting and Communication well over 20 years ago. During that time, he has been a radio personality, who’s been featured on radio and television for a number of years. He has specialized in the industry as an interviewer and subject matter expert. To add to his resume, he has operated as an entrepreneur for several decades. In his role as Sales Manager within KYND, he expressed that he enjoys his place. He said, “A large part of what we want to do is help to develop others - help to develop the next generation help others to appreciate the opportunity to express their creativity and grow as individuals and business owners.” He continued, “We are just happy to provide a forum and platform that allows for young entrepreneurs that are emerging and trying to reach new audiences to connect with our public and be able to really help them to benefit by the usage of the services that we provide.” Hines shared his desire in radio is to keep members of our community empowered by, addressing issues and areas within that are often overlooked or not spoken on at all. When asked of advice to the Black community he exclaimed, “We are stronger together than a part!” “In our community we should recognize that we can all work in concert without any one person having to be at the head as long as all of us are on one accord,” he added. KYND RADIO In the formation of KYND Radio, both Parsons and Hines recognized that

there was a void created for the need of African-American voices to be heard in talk radio, throughout the city. The pair synonymously acknowledged that they both realized they were, “better together than apart”. Upon combining their unique gifts they have been able to fulfill the gap that was left vacant in talk radio; by helping the Black community get a better understanding of the events occurring that affects our communities. Hence, KYND offers our community an avenue to continuously be informed throughout the day, while still being able to keep current with daily tasks. KYND also yields a platform for individual talents and businesses to share their perspective ideas, products and services in a professional setting. This forum is advantageous for members of the African-American society to be able to take advantage of the various opportunities available to us. Today, KYND Radio is a 25,000-watt radio station with a 200-mile radius within Houston and surrounding suburban areas. Its’ audience has the ability to enjoy the station on 1520 AM. Collectively, the team shares common ground in regards to expectations and objectives which has paved the way for the station to become the largest Black-owned signal broadcasted. A desire amongst the team, to help and watch people grow and produce positive messaging are all elements that have assisted KYND into evolving into a new and innovative facet of our community. Hines and Parsons also have a mutual respect for being able to share genuine stories; that has the ability to uplift others through their network which enables others to connect and relate to their stories.

Jack and Jill of America host a Series of Regional Youth Leadership Development Teen Conferences
Community Service Day, Stop the Hunger, San Antonio Chapter, Alex Brown
BEAUMONT - More than 700 teenagers and adults gathered in Beaumont, Texas to attend Jack and Jill of America, Inc.’s 62nd Annual Teen Conference for the South Central Region. The conference gave the youth the opportunity to give back to the community by conducting community service for Habitat for Humanity. They also gave powerful speeches to their peers, produced skits and engaged in leadership workshops at the conference. The teen conference also entailed plenary sessions where teens follow Robert’s Rules of Order to conduct regional business and elect new teen regional officers. The conference ended with a gala that recognized graduating seniors. The South Central conference was one of many that took place across the nation. The multi-day conferences provided youth opportunities for interaction and networking, platforms for leadership development, and a context for creative, cultural, educational, and community service activities. Over a four-day period, teens participated in workshops such as leadership training for Junior Teens, Paths to STEM Careers, Financial Fitness, Achieving Your Dreams, Navigating Social Media, Coping with Teen

When T’Mculus is not helping students, he is working on his own projects such as EB5 International, which stands for Everybody Feels An International Vibe Experience. It first started in Spring, Texas when he first opened one of the first international art gallery in 2004. From there, he then wanted to start a network, which started from his first documentary in India. Before long, EB5 International TV had received over 85,000 views. Through EB5 International, he showcases different artists and their artistry. He interviews them and takes footage of the life they live and represent. He expressed, “What I’m trying to show people is the real culture and bring that interconnectedness, and that’s where that international vibe comes from.” In 2017, he plans to go back in production and do a world tour to showcase Japan, Indonesia, Ghana, Belize, and Nicaragua just to name a few. In addition to, EB5 Arts, is an online website that sells original art, and is also the home of tsoL, which is a clothing line that he has created. The goal of the website was to create the same vibe online that people experienced while they were in the international art gallery that was created in Spring, Texas. The name tsoL, is Lost spelled backwards. T.B. Stewart Ministries presents: PREPARE TO ACCELERATE
HOUSTON - A religious philanthropist, educator, religious leader, businessman and author, are just a few titles that describe who Pastor Titus B. Stewart is. He has been pastoring for 17 years, and is the current pastor of Greater Emmanuel Worship Center. He is the third pastor of this church, and was not only born and raised in the ministry he currently pastors, but was very blessed and fortunate to succeed his father, who was the pastor before him. He is also the founder of T.B. Stewart ministries, which implements programs that imparts into the body of Christ the importance of honoring their leaders through biblical teaching. Bishop Stewart is a true servant of God, and he expressed, “I love to connect with people, help people, build people, and help develop people to their God given purpose, and to help them shape that and mold that and become everything that God has called them to be.” In addition to pastoring, Bishop Stewart is a successful author. His published books include, Rising from the Ashes, You Wear Favor Well, and an inspirational book titled Training Days, and a Kingdom Citizen Living a Supernatural Life. Furthermore, he is also an educated man, who has received a Bachelors of Theology in 2014 from the Christian Bible Institute and Seminary, and is currently working on a dual degree from the Christian Bible Institute and Seminary as well. Through all of his hard work, he couldn’t have done any of it without the support of his lovely wife, Tammy Stewart. Bishop Stewart, his wife, and members are now preparing for their leadership conference, which is called “Prepare to Accelerate”. According to Bishop Stewart, TX-8

he stated, “This conference, is intended with purpose to invite those who are serious about ministry…and going to the next level.” In addition to, he added that this conference is “for those who have a passion and a hunger to do better and to have a ministry of excellence, this conference is targeting that audience.” Often times, many people want to do better, and to move to the next level, but they don’t know how. Many people know what they desire to see, but they don’t know how to make it happen. “You can’t accelerate, if you don’t know how to prepare for it”, expressed Bishop Stewart, and this is what the leadership conference is all about. This conference is not only for pastors and their spouses, but also for leaders, for entrepreneurs, aspiring entrepreneurs, and for all religious worshipers. Bishop Stewart stated, “You may not be an officer in your church, but how can I be inspired to aspire to be a help to my ministry”. He made it known that God has sent people to their local church to not just sit on the pew to keep it warm, but to be an agent of influence to help that pastor carry the weight and load that God has placed, and the vision and the burden upon him for that particular region that God has called him to.
This conference has daily lessons that will empower, infuse, energize, inspire, and educate all attendees on how to accelerate, to grow, expand, and how to get their vision up off the ground. People can expect transformation, and to leave this conference as a better person than what they were when they arrived. Bishop Stewart expects that these daily sessions will be “enlightening, powerful, helpful, informational, and that it will expose all attendees to greater and better.” Some of the sessions that will be offered include, classes for pastors and spouses, how to build your children’s ministry, classes for administrators, and sessions even for choir members and praise dancers, just to name a few. He wants the daily sessions to transform the hearts and mind of all those who will attend. There is also a special session for pastor’s wives. A lot of times, a pastor’s wife is left out because she is so focused and concerned on taking care of everyone else, that she often forgets to take care of herself. This session is an intimate session where pastor’s wives will get together and talk about their dreams and goals, and how to accelerate while being a first lady of their church. HOUSTON- The atmosphere at Fallbrook Baptist Church, where Michael Pender is Pastor, was very uplifting Wednesday night from the minute the show began. The show opened up with Fallbrook’s praise team, and the spirit quickly filled the place. People were up clapping, dancing, and just praising God’s name. Every year Fallbrook hosts Christmas in July, which takes place every Wednesday night in July at 7pm. There is no charge for the show, and people get the opportunity to hear from National gospel singers. This year for each Wednesday, the line up included; Anthony Brown, Myron Butler, Tasha Cobbs, CeCe Winans, with a closing performance by Mary Mary. When Mary Mary took the stage, the crowd went wild. There was so much energy in the room, and everyone was very excited to worship with the Campbell sisters. Many people who attended the concert not only got closer to God, but they also left the concert encouraged
and inspired. Mary Mary touched many lives in the room through their amazing vocals. I received the great pleasure of interviewing both sisters, and they were both very humble, sweet, and true believers of God. When it comes to worshipping with the crowd, Erica Campbell expressed, “I feel honored, exhilarated, and it’s a beautiful thing for God to trust me with the kind of gift that allows us to feel up a room like that, and have them worship with us. It’s really really amazing and humbling.” She also made it known that the one thing she wants people to take from her show, is Jesus. She further stated, “I want them to trust him, to rest in him, to know that all things are possible, and that they can overcome any problems because nothing is too hard for God.” In addition to, she also wanted people to know that in life, we will have to go through some things sometimes, but those things won’t last forever. With so many negative things that are currently going on around the world, this concert was very
important because so many people received the chance to experience something that was very heartening and positive. In regards to these issues affecting our nation, Erica Campbell expressed, “Our nation has vocalized that they don’t believe in God…I think if the church would get out in front and lead with the power of God, then I think it would be much different than leading with an angry kind of spirit. I think prayer is the key.” Her sister Tina Campbell stated, “It’s unfortunate, but I have faith in God, and I believe that God’s strategies and God’s answers are going to make a difference.” She further expressed, “If we as a people can began to love and forgive and get over stuff, I think we can move forward. Yes we do have to act, and yes we do have to vote, but I think love and forgiveness is where we have to start.” The show was a phenomenal success, and if you didn’t get a chance to experience Christmas this year in July, feel free to check out this free event next year.

TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY TSU administrators meet with Education Secretary in D.C. TSU Board of Regents Chairman Derrick Mitchell and TSU President Dr. Austin A. Lane were in Washington D.C., recently for a meeting with U.S. Department of Education Secretary John King. Regent Mitchell and Dr. Lane wish to thank Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee for arranging the meeting with the U.S. Secretary of Education and for assisting TSU with state and federal funding. TSU is located in the 18th Congressional District, TX – the Congresswoman’s district. TSU 2016 Homecoming “ReMember the Times” Oct 17-22

exas Southern University has anchored Houston’s Third Ward community for 89 years. The buildings, grounds, student organizations, athletic teams, professors and academic programs have given TSU students countless memories of their time on “The Yard.” This year’s annual Homecoming festivities, scheduled for October 17-22, 2016, with the theme “ReMember the Times” will evoke those memories as the decade classes of 1936, ’46, ’56, ‘66, ‘76, ’86, ‘96 and ’06 will be celebrated. The classes of 1966 and 1991 will observe their 25th and 50th anniversaries, respectively. If you or someone you know graduated or attended TSU during those years and would like to be recognized, contact Connie Cochran at 713-3137606 or Tiffany Asberry at 713-313-1861. “Texas Southern University has evolved so much in so many ways over the years and so many people have such nostalgic feelings about this place that we wanted a platform for the TSU family to relive some of those memories,” said Eva Pickens, vice president of University Advancement.” “We want to bring back as many people from those decades to “remember their times” on campus and share their memories with current students to build that connecting bond.” All Homecoming events – at the request of TSU students and alumni – will be held on campus.

JHJ alumnus joins top Executive MBA program Darius Reid, a 2006 Business Management graduate of the Jesse H. Jones School of Business, has been accepted into the prestigious Executive MBA program at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He is a senior merchandise manager at the Whirlpool Corporation. Reid was employed at Stanley Black & Decker after graduating from TSU, where he outperformed expectations.

High-Speed Rail Project Connecting North Texas and Houston
Marvalette Hunter of Texas Central Partners, LLC made a presentation during AHCBED's July networking luncheon regarding the HighSpeed Rail Project connecting North Texas and Houston. Ms. Hunter informed attendees that, “This privately developed rail system will generate an estimated economic impact of $36 billion over the next 25 years – without using taxpayer funds. It will also complement the state’s existing transportation network and help prepare Texas for generations of future growth.” AHCBED expressed its support development of the high-speed rail, and believes this transportation infrastructure project will provide a safe, reliable and productive travel alternative between Houston and North Texas.

AHCBED has partnered with Houston Community College and Lone Star College-Victory Center to provide 25 local businesses with the opportunity to participate in a six (6) week small business training program. This FREE series will provide entrepreneurs and small business owners with practical, focused methods and hands-on activities for starting or growing their business. Professors and business experts from the colleges will teach concepts to include: • How to structure your business; • How to prepare an effective business plan; • Understanding financial statements and financing your business; • Developing an effective marketing plan (including social media); • Human resources management; • How to do business with Lone Star College and Houston Community College; and • Local resources in Houston for your business. The registration deadline is August 29, 2016. Classes begin Thursday, September 8, 2016 (6PM) at the AHCBED located at 6112 Wheatley Street, Houston, TX 77091.
